Brian EnoReflection ... CD
Warp, 2017. Used ... $9.99
Fantastic sounds from Brian Eno – music that feels like it came right out of the same period as his early discreet music experiments – and which reminds us that, although countless others have explored this territory, nobody does it better than the man who invented it! The sounds are spare, yet never meaningless – beautifully constructed with this hint of melody in the air – a slowness that only seems to create deeper contemplation of the few elements – and a sense of perfection that makes both the silences and sounds resonate with undeniable meaning. One long piece – and a record that we'd put on a par with his classic Music For Airports! CD

Brian Eno with Jon Hopkins & Leo AbrahamsSmall Craft On A Milk Sea ... CD
Warp, 2010. Used ... $8.99
A brilliant set of ambient atmosphere and heavier instrumental moodcraft from Brian Eno on Warp Records – excellent new material from a true innovator – with deft accompaniment from Leo Abrahams on some really unique, textural guitar and Jon Hopkins on piano, keys and electronics. As a producer & collaborator to superstars, Eno seems to be called in to provide sweeping, yet atypical walls of sound to more conventional pop/rock songwriting, but his own all too few records are as unencumbered by convention as ever. The sounds range from spare and open, to more of a thumping intensity. Of course production quality is truly impeccable, as you should expect from a sound savant of Eno's caliber. Titles include "Emerald And Lime", "Complex Heaven", "Flint", "Horse", "Bone Jump", "Dust Shuffle", "Written, Forgotten", "Late Anthropocene", "Calcium Needles", "2 Forms Of Anger", "Paleosonic" and more. ✨✧ Aphex TwinCheetah EP ... CD
Warp, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Richard D James has lost none of his touch over the years – still as stark and ear-grabbing as he was when we heard the first Aphex Twin release – at a level that really lives up to all the faith we've had in his music over the years! This EP is bubbling over with blips, beats, and bassy bottoms that are more than enough to rumble our speakers right off the racks – a few variations on the title "Cheetah" tune, and a few more on "Cirklon" – all in a mode that's partly old school electro, partly that future sound and vision that we love from James. ✨✧ Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... CD
Prestige, 1974. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". ✨✧ Mal Waldron with Eric Dolphy & Booker ErvinQuest ... CD
New Jazz/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pivotal work from Waldron – stepping out of the blowing session mode, emerging as one of the 60s most striking moderinists. Like a lot of Waldron's records from the time, this set shows an amazing desire for new forms and modern ideas, and the mix of players – Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ron Carter, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip – pulls the material in a number of different ways. Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz". CD

VariousAfro Rock Vol 1 ... CD
Kona/Evolver, 1970s. Used ... $7.99
One of the best compilations of Afro Funk titles we've ever stocked – one that goes way past the obvious titles and minor hits of the 70s! Ever tune on here is a gem – and the package even includes a few tunes that were either previously unreleased, or which were only ever issued on cassette, a popular form in 70s Africa. The "rock" in the title should be taken lightly – because the groove here is more funky, with drums, guitar, and horns coming together in glorious rhythmic cacophony! The whole set's got a great raw sound – and titles include "Mabala" by Yahoos, "Onukpa Shawarpo" by Bokoor Band, "Sweeper Soul" by Super Mambo 69, "Yuda" by Dackin Dackino, "Envy No Good" by Mercury Dance Band", and "Fever" by Jingo.
