GonjasufiMandela Effect ... CD
Warp, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
An album that's kind of a cross-section of the Gonjasufi sound of late – given that it features some remixes and rework tracks – but a record that's still very much an important addition to his ever-growing catalog! The sound is spacey and laidback, but also has lots of dark currents – that fuzzy sense of distortion, used both on the keyboards and beats, and on the voices that flow through the tracks – which almost feel like some weird sort of outer space lyricism at times. Titles include "When I Die (IMD rmx)", "The Conspiracy (Santiro Romeri rmx)", "Show (Beth Gibbons/Rustin Man cover)", "Your Maker (Daddy G rmx)", "Afrikan Spaceship (Shabazz Palaces rework)", "Manic Depressant (Perera Elsewhere rmx)", "Etherwave (feat Tony Allen)", "Afrikan Spaceship (King Britt rms)", and "Your Maker (Anna Wise remaker)". KelelaTake Me Apart ... CD
Warp, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The stunning debut of Kelela – a singer who's been bubbling under for so long, she bursts out strongly right from the very first note! Kelela's ready to take on both the indie underground and the mainstream with this set – as the album's got a depth to rival some of the most compelling Neo Soul work from female singers in the past decade or so, but also has a tight crackle that could get her winning a lot more ears – especially given the strong reception for powerful female soul that's emerged in the past few years! The album's got a very layered sense of instrumentation – mostly produced by Jam City – and these sonic textures work really well with Kelela's voice, which slides into the mix perfectly – but never in a way that the lady buries the message in her music at all. Instead, the whole thing represents a real triumph of the contemporary – showing that there's still plenty of new territory to discover, if you know where to look. Titles include "Frontline", "Take Me Apart", "Jupiter", "Better", "LMK", "Onanon", "Turn To Dust", and "Truth Or Dare". CD

Oneohtrix Point NeverGood Time – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Warp, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The contemporary soundtrack is alive and well in the hands of an artist like Oneohtrix Point Never – brought back to a new sense of intensity that it hadn't had since the early days of electronic pioneers like John Carpenter and David Lynch! Tracks are mostly spare, but striking – and, a bit like the music to Speed, the score here has a way of referencing past modes, but condensing things with a more contemporary vibe – shaking out any of the cheesier possibilities, and really making sounds that have a strong current of darkness! Titles include "Romance Apocalypse", "The Acid Hits", "Entry To White Castle", "Ray Wakes Up", "6th Floor", "Hospital Escape", "Bail Bonds", and "The Pure & The Damned", which features Iggy Pop. CD

✨✧ Brian EnoReflection ... CD
Warp, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Brian Eno – music that feels like it came right out of the same period as his early discreet music experiments – and which reminds us that, although countless others have explored this territory, nobody does it better than the man who invented it! The sounds are spare, yet never meaningless – beautifully constructed with this hint of melody in the air – a slowness that only seems to create deeper contemplation of the few elements – and a sense of perfection that makes both the silences and sounds resonate with undeniable meaning. One long piece – and a record that we'd put on a par with his classic Music For Airports! CD
