Earl HagenI Spy – Music From The Television Series (Warner) ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong Kong) makes for some added musical touches that bring a groovy global aspect to the work. And given that Bill Cosby was a key member of the show, you can bet that things sound pretty darn hip! Titles include "Angel", "Hi Yo Scotty", "I Spy", "Ah So", "Away We Go To Mexico", "Made In Hong Kong", and "Fiesta Del Sol". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono gold label pressing.)

AmericaHarbor ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A lesser-remembered album from America, and one with some surprisingly nice moments, too! The group here are still working with producer George Martin – but they're recording in Hawaii, with some tight studio help – and almost hitting that sound they helped inspire in so many others with their earlier records – a perfect warm, mellow, seventies mode that's mighty nice throughout! A few tunes almost bring in an undercurrent of funk – more of a bit of a punch at the bottom, with less of the fragile acoustic modes of before – although a few nice tracks still have those in place as well. Drummer Willie Leacox brings in a nice kick to the set – and titles include "God Of The Sun", "Sergeant Darkness", "Sarah", "These Brown Eyes", "Don't Cry Baby", "Hurricane", and "Now She's Gone". Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

AssociationAssociation ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... $4.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Titles include "Broccoli", "The Nest", "Love Affair", "Boy On the Mountain", "Under Branches", "Goodbye Forever", and "Yes I Will". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the harder to find LPs by this fantastic pop harmony group from LA. You already know their hits from other LPs, but this one's got a bit more of a rock sound, and some excellent groovy production by Bones Howe. All of the tracks are originals, and they've got nice groovy themes, as you'll guess from titles like "The Bus Song", "Birthday Morning", "Barefoot Gentleman", "Toymaker", and "Rose Petals, Incense, & A Kitten"! Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ B-52sB-52s ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good- ... $8.99
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned postwar America, one in which the neuroses are all on the outside – served up with instrumentation that's stark, but incredibly tight – snapping drums, riffing guitar, and these great organ lines that sound beautiful next to the vocals of Fred and the girls. The set gave the group their perennial hit "Rock Lobster" – but taken as a whole, it's an incredibly different landscape – as you'll discover on tracks that include "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Dance This Mess Around", "Lava", "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)", "Hero Worship", "6060-842" and "Downtown". B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good ... $12.99
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". ✨✧ Beach BoysHolland ... LP
Brother/Warner, 1972. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great early 70s entry from The Beach Boys – and a record that's nicely balanced between mature pop tunes and more experimental moments! The set kicks off with the sublime "Sail On Sailor" – a tightly compressed, wonderfully catchy number that's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – and other tracks range from gentle ballads to playful numbers to others that explore more spiritual themes. All group members contributed tunes, and helped in production, but somehow we feel the tighter hand of Brian Wilson behind it all. Titles include "Sail On Sailor", "The Trader", "Funky Pretty", "Only With You", "Leaving This Town", and the "California Saga". LP, Vinyl record album

George BensonBig Boss Band ... LP
Warner, 1990. Very Good+ ... $2.99
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". LP, Vinyl record album

The fuzz is definitely turned up to 11, the rhythms move at a breakneck speed, and Ozzy's vocals have all the mean, sinister sounds that set a generation on fire – plenty of energy to fill up long tracks that include "Megalomania", "Hole In The Sky", "Symptom Of The Universe", "Supertzar", "Am I Going Insane", and "The Writ". Ruby BraffRuby Braff Goes Girl Crazy ... LP
Warner, 1959. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by trumpeter Ruby Braff – a set that's hipper than some of his other 50s sessions, thanks to some wonderful sidemen! The sound here is still somewhat traditional, but there's also an undercurrent of 50s modern swing too – thanks to work by Jim Hall on guitar, Al Cohn on tenor, and Hank Jones on piano – all players who skew the record nicely away from some of the too-sweet or too-familiar modes of some of Ruby's other sessions. The music is all from the Gershwin score for Girl Crazy – played in a mellow and open-handed style that brings a new sense of swing to the tunes – and rhythm is by George Duvivier or Bob Haggart on bass, and Buzzy Drootin on drums. Titles include "Embraceable You", "Treat Me Rough", "But Not For Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "Bidin My Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Bob CarpenterSilent Passage ... LP
Warner, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The rare solo album from Canadian singer-songwriter Bob Carpenter – a really lovely record that mixes Bob's gritty folk rock tunes with some sweeter studio touches! The album was recorded from the early to mid 70s, had a troubled release history and deserved better – but over the years it's really grown to legendary proportions, thanks to a huge amount of underground supporters around the world. Carpenter's music is an endearing mix of gruff lead vocals with honest emotion and no-nonsense acoustic guitars – and although some tunes have a slightly bigger sound, with keyboard, strings, and some slight backing vocals (including work from Emmylou Harris), the core energy of the record still comes strongly from Bob himself. Titles include "Miracle Man", "Silent Passage", "Old Friends", "First Sight", "Morning Train", "Gypsy Down", "Before My Time", and "Now And Then". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete Christlieb/Warne MarshApogee ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb – recording them along with Lou Levy on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, and Nick Ceroli on drums, in a setting that's got a warm, acoustic feel. There's no tricks or electricity on the set – just a tight, angular approach to modern jazz – crafted in the twin-sax mode that Marsh recorded in often during the 50s. Titles include "Magnatism", "317 E 32nd", "Rapunzel", and "Tenors Of The Time". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lunarcy", "Love Me", and "How About You". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1978. Very Good- Gatefold ... $7.99
What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later sampling hip hop ones. The record's got a sophisticated soul approach that moves the music way past slapped basslines and funny glasses – and thanks to top-line musicianship, including some help from Fred Wesley, Bootsy avoids any cliches that might have buried this one under the mountain of P-Funk albums hitting the market at the same time. Bill CosbyHooray For The Salvation Army Band! ... LP
Warner, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An early funk album by Bill Cosby – with backing by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band! Bill was pals with Charles Wright and crew in the hip LA of the late 60s, and he was also responsible for bringing the group to Warner Brothers – so the fit here is quite a natural one. The record was also produced by Fred Smith – who handled the Watts Band's albums – and it's got a very similar feel to their classics for Warner from the late 60s – but with Bill Cosby stepping out in front on vocals, in a similar style to Charles Wright. Cosby's singing is often a bit goofy, but works beautifully with the stoned to the bone feel of the group – a madder match than even Charles Wright, especially on the album's "parody soul" cuts. Titles include a classic break version of "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" – plus the titles "Ursalena", "Funky North Philadelphia", "Sunny", and a surprisingly great screaming version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill CosbySilver Throat – Bill Cosby Sings ... LP
Warner, 1967. Very Good ... $0.99
A weird little record from Bill Cosby – a set that's not as all-out funky as some of his other vocal albums, but still pretty nice overall! The style here is more bluesy than soul-based, but production is still by Fred Smith, of 103rd Street Rhythm Band fame – and the album has a sense of grit that's a lot stronger than you might guess. Many of the tunes are covers from an older R&B era, and Cosby takes them with an approach that's a bit tongue-in-cheek at times – kind of garbling the lyrics and muddying up the sound, even though we know he can sing a bit more clearly from other records! There's certainly a few tracks that have a nice gritty soul sound, and titles include the great "Little Ole Man" which is basically Bill doing a skit over the "Uptight" rhythm – plus "Bright Lights Big City", "Big Boss Man", "Hush Hush", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "Mojo Workout", "Doncha Know", and "Place In The Sun". The album's heavy on mellower cuts, but it's never too sleepy – thanks to a slow-burning sensibility that Randy uses to keep things cooking on the low burners – a style that brings out some good vocal force even when the backings are somewhat gentle. A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis help out a bit on production, too – furthering that sound even more – and ensuring that the album's got plenty of hook-heavy numbers for the crossover scene. Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has lightly bent corners.)

DevoSomething For Everybody ... LP
Warner, 2010. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Devolution is real! The title's a bit pandering, but that's part of the manifesto this time, and the record's sure to please any fans of Devo's older work – even if it might seem like some sort of easy attempt to recreate the sound of 1981! All the classic elements are in place here – quirky rhythms, jerky vocals, and all the offbeat Devo sounds you might expect – all perhaps not as fresh as they were back in the day, but still remarkably present and untouched, given the passage of time! Titles include "Fresh", "What We Do", "Please Baby Please", "Mind Games"," Human Rocket", and "Step Up". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donald FagenNightfly ... LP
Warner, 1982. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A bit of jazzy magic from Fagen – stepping out from the cover of Steely Dan after the Gaucho album, and sounding pretty darn great on his own! The record is almost nostalgic, going back to a 50s of Brubeck, abstract expressionism, and pre-Castro Havana – filled with images that are a bit less oblique than those of Fagen's work with Steely Dan, and a love for the subject matter that makes us like the record even more. Musically, the set follows strongly from Gaucho, but has perhaps a bit more straight jazz – and titles include "The Goodbye Look", "Walk Between Raindrops", "IGY", "Green Flower Street", and "New Frontier". Joe FarrellLa Catedral Y El Toro ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A mix of Latin modes and soulful fusion grooves – both of which make for an excellent album from the post-CTI years of reedman Joe Farrell! Joe plays soprano, tenor, and flute on the record – always with that well-crafted groove he first brought to jazz back in the 60s, working in a more modern context – still sounding wonderfully fresh here in the larger backdrops of a record like this – definitely a cut above most mainstream artists of his nature! Production is by Ralph MacDonald and William Eaton, with a great blend of soul and jazz – and all cuts are instrumental, with help from players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Titles include "Promise Me Your Love", "La Catedral Y El Toro", "Disco Dust", "Cyclone Rider", "Is It Asking Too Much", and "Imagine Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe FarrellNight Dancing ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Smooth grooves from Joe Farrell – and a great little set that's got all the best soulful elements of his work on CTI, even if the setting's a bit different! The album's one that we passed over for years, thinking it a slick fusion date – but Farrell's reeds are every bit as sharp as on some of his earlier dates – set up here in a largeish group with lots of great keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Victor Feldman. A few numbers have some vocals – but in the best sort of 70s soul fusion mode, sung by Flora Purim, Lynda Tucker Lawrence, and Andrea Robinson – and other players include Harvey Mason on drums, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Airto on percussion – so you can bet that the rhythms are solidly grounded! Titles include "Casa Los Suspensos", "Night Dancing", "Another Star", "You're In My HEart", "Katherine", "Silver Lace", "How Deep Is Your Love", and "Come Rain Or Come Shine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ FunkadelicOne Nation Under A Groove ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
An instant classic the day it was released – and a perfect blending of the group's older freaked-out style with a slick late 70s funk sound that started showing up in the work of many other groups. "One Nation Under A Groove" is a monster cut with a hook that won't quit, and the LP version runs way over 7 minutes long. Other tracks are equally great, and the whole thing's woven together with the same sort of skill as some of the best Parliament albums from the mid 70s. Tracks include "Into You", "Grooveallegiance", and "Cholly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gang Of FourSongs Of The Free ... LP
Warner, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Quite possibly our favorite Gang Of Four album – and the one in which their funk approach really seems to work! The album's got a camp appeal that can't be denied – known famously for it's big post-disco hit "I Love A Man In Uniform" – but overall the whole thing actually seems pretty well thought out – taking the heady politics of earlier records, and putting them into catchy guitar-driven dancefloor tracks that clearly get the message out to a whole new audience of converts! Titles include "Call Me Up", "I Love A Man In Uniform", "Life It's A Shame", "I Will Be A Good Boy", "The History Of The World", "Muscle For Brains", "Of The Instant", and the sublime William Blake-inspired groover "We Live As We Dream, Alone". Sweet modern soul from Larry Graham – a set that's miles from his earlier work, but in a great way that really shows him stretching out in new directions! In keeping with the times, the grooves here are often heavy on the beats, bass, and keys – fused together especially nicely on some cuts that have additional production or arrangement help from George Duke – but still sounding great when Larry's at the helm on his own, and singing with a slightly sharp edge in his vocals. Grateful DeadSkeletons In The Closet – The Best Of The Grateful Dead ... LP
Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. An excellent session that was one of Herbie Hancock's first free-flowing fusion records of the 70s! Herbie's playing Fender Rhodes with a sound that's at once cosmically beautiful, soulfully fragile, and spacily grooving – and he gets some excellent accompaniment from an all-hip group of players that includes Benny Maupin on bass clarinet and flute, Buster Williams on bass, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, and Julian Priester on trombone – plus percussion from Jose Areas and Ndugu Chancler. A wonderful bit of hipster tracks from the early 60s! Mel Henke was part Esquivel, part Pete Rugolo, part Ken Nordine, part Kenyon Hopkins – and one of the best, and most underrated of the late 50s/early 60s bachelor pad arrangers! This album's most likely his best – and it's a mad mix of tracks with a slinky jazzy sound. Some have strange narration, others have strange instrumentation, and nearly all of them have a wild cartoony sound that's just great. Listen for strange vocals from Beverly Ford, electric violin by Elliott Fisher, and lots of percussion by Larry Bunker and Milt Holland. Antonio Carlos JobimCertain Mr Jobim ... LP
Warner, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A wickedly wonderful album by Antonio Carlos Jobim – recorded in LA in the mid 60s, and a perfect meeting of styles that makes for one of his most compelling albums of the 60s! Jobim sings and plays over pillowy-soft arrangements by Claus Ogerman – lightly dancing numbers that weave strings and woodwinds into a wave of sound that dips, turns, and sometimes hits a surprisingly nice groove. Dick Hyman plays a bit of organ on the set – which we always love – and Dom Um Romao's working in the group somewhere on drums. Lyrics are in English, sung in a warm and fragile style by Jobim – and the album's got a great organy version of "Surfboard", plus "Zingaro", "Bonita", "Off-Key", and "Photograph".
