Earl HagenI Spy – Music From The Television Series (Warner) ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong Kong) makes for some added musical touches that bring a groovy global aspect to the work. And given that Bill Cosby was a key member of the show, you can bet that things sound pretty darn hip! Titles include "Angel", "Hi Yo Scotty", "I Spy", "Ah So", "Away We Go To Mexico", "Made In Hong Kong", and "Fiesta Del Sol". LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoI'm Fine, How Are You? ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A lot smoother than most of Airto's other work – and almost more of a soul record than a jazz one – but also a great batch of grooves with a really spirited feel! Airto's percussion is still relatively up front in the mix, and smooth funky LA arrangements take the album to a warm soulful place – giving the more uptempo tracks a tight dancefloor groove that's still kept a bit rootsy by all the acoustic percussion. Tom Scot lays down great solos on two tracks – "I'm Fine, How Are You" and "The Road Is Hard (But We're Going To Make It)" – and other good tracks include "The Happy People" and "Celebration Suite". AirtoTouching You, Touching Me ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good ... $9.99
One of Airto's most polished records, and an album that we've really grown to love over the years! There's a pretty strong modern soul/R&B component to the album – but at the core, there's still a strong feeling for Brazilian rhythms, and the record's got a wonderfully warm Brazilian fusion component. Marcos Valle arranged many of the tracks with Airto, and the record's similar to some of his excellent R&B-ish work from the early 80s, particularly the stuff he did after working with Leon Ware. Great players and singers on the sessions, too – including George Duke, Herb Alpert, Flora Purim and The Sweet Inspirations. Tracks include "Heartbeat", "Amajour", "Partido Alto", "Open Space", "Tempos Atras", and "And Then We Touched The Sky". LP, Vinyl record album

AssociationAssociation ... LP
Warner, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Titles include "Broccoli", "The Nest", "Love Affair", "Boy On the Mountain", "Under Branches", "Goodbye Forever", and "Yes I Will". LP, Vinyl record album

Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Atlantic StarrAll In The Name Of Love ... LP
Warner, 1986. Sealed ... $6.99
A mid 80s classic from Atlantic Starr – at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". B-52sB-52s ... LP
Warner, 1979. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned postwar America, one in which the neuroses are all on the outside – served up with instrumentation that's stark, but incredibly tight – snapping drums, riffing guitar, and these great organ lines that sound beautiful next to the vocals of Fred and the girls. The set gave the group their perennial hit "Rock Lobster" – but taken as a whole, it's an incredibly different landscape – as you'll discover on tracks that include "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Dance This Mess Around", "Lava", "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)", "Hero Worship", "6060-842" and "Downtown". Warren Barker77 Sunset Strip – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1959. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A very groovy set of cop show jazz from the classic TV show 77 Sunset Strip – every bit as tasty as some of Henry Mancini's work for similar programs at the time! Warren Barker's got a really playful approach to the tunes on the set – mixing together straight jazz with some nice bachelor pad touches in the arrangements – often giving instruments like piano or trombone a slightly off-kilter feel, thanks to the way they're recorded. Most of the tunes have swinging and jaunty rhythms that groove around in a cool late 50s sort of way – and although there's a few standards thrown into the mix, the overall presentation is fresh enough to make them feel like originals! Titles include "Late At Bailey's Pad", "Cleo's Theme", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Kookie's Caper", "Stu Bailey's Blues", "Caper At The Coffee House", "77 Sunset Strip Cha Cha", and "Blue Night On The Strip". Beach BoysHolland ... LP
Brother/Warner, 1972. Very Good ... $11.99
A great early 70s entry from The Beach Boys – and a record that's nicely balanced between mature pop tunes and more experimental moments! The set kicks off with the sublime "Sail On Sailor" – a tightly compressed, wonderfully catchy number that's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – and other tracks range from gentle ballads to playful numbers to others that explore more spiritual themes. All group members contributed tunes, and helped in production, but somehow we feel the tighter hand of Brian Wilson behind it all. Titles include "Sail On Sailor", "The Trader", "Funky Pretty", "Only With You", "Leaving This Town", and the "California Saga". LP, Vinyl record album

The grandest scale and most elaborately furnished Black Sabbath album to this point – but they still bring the heavy! The title track is one of the most influential metal songs ever, with the foreboding lyrics, trudging stomp of a rhythmic pace and those bridges that are almost pretty – and the most of the rest of the album is great, too – more carefully produced than the previous few without compromising the menace. Graham BondSolid Bond ... LP
Warner, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Certainly solid work from Graham Bond – working here with an all-star lineup who really make the record cook nicely! The set features some of Bond's best contemporaries – all players who, like him, had started out in simpler mod 60s modes, but had really matured strongly by the time of this date – moving into a range of complicated jazz and rockish expressions in their own music, but uniting here with Graham for a set that's still got a nice old school groove! In a time when some of the jazz rock groups were getting a bit excessive, this album's nicely restrained – shortish tracks that focus strongly on tight hooks and soulful rhythms, but all in ways that still sound plenty adventurous. Bond plays Hammond and sings, and other guests include Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John McLaughlin – on titles that include "Can't Stand It", "Walkin In The Park", "Long Legged Baby", "Doxy", "The Grass Is Greener", "It's Not Goodbye", "Neighbor Neighbor", and "Springtime In The City". Barbara CarrollLive! Her Piano & Trio ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A cooking little live set from pianist Barbara Carroll – and a set that definitely shows the stronger approach to the keys she was using in the 60s! Some moments still have Carroll hitting those fluid, lyrical modes that graced her important 50s recordings – but others show a definite strength on the left hand too, which punches things up in a way that really emphasizes the rhythms and which show that Barbara's been listening to some of the younger players of the soul jazz generation! The rhythm players – Dick Sheridan on drums and percussion, and Beverly Peer on bass – both show a nice ability to change up the groove and keep things interesting – again in ways that echo the younger generation. Titles include "What Now My Love", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Fiddler On The Roof Medley", "On A Clear Day", "Suzie's Bossa Nova", and "Satin Doll". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete Christlieb/Warne MarshApogee ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb – recording them along with Lou Levy on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, and Nick Ceroli on drums, in a setting that's got a warm, acoustic feel. There's no tricks or electricity on the set – just a tight, angular approach to modern jazz – crafted in the twin-sax mode that Marsh recorded in often during the 50s. Titles include "Magnatism", "317 E 32nd", "Rapunzel", and "Tenors Of The Time". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lunarcy", "Love Me", and "How About You". LP, Vinyl record album

What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later sampling hip hop ones. The record's got a sophisticated soul approach that moves the music way past slapped basslines and funny glasses – and thanks to top-line musicianship, including some help from Fred Wesley, Bootsy avoids any cliches that might have buried this one under the mountain of P-Funk albums hitting the market at the same time. Some of the tracks here follow familiar Cooper territory – sinister, hard-rocking energy with a no-nonsense approach – but there's also some deeper elements handled nicely by Bob Ezrin – with qualities that now feel years ahead of their time, and maybe even an influence to later folks who never would have admitted such a link! The set is great, and the overall sound is a mix of smooth production with Lorraine's raw gospelly vocals – and tracks include "Stay With Me", "A Good Love", "Many Rivers To Cross", "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "When Love Flies Away", "No Matter How It All Turns Out", "He's My Guy", "Try Just A Little Bit Harder", and "Only Your Love". This great soul diva gets sort of a LA studio treatment with cool arrangements by Nick DeCaro and production by Ted Templeman. The sound has sort of that "spiritual soul for whiteys" feel, but it's still pretty great, and Lorraine Ellison has a voice that's good enough to cut through most of the bullshit. Tracks include "Walk Around Heaven", "No Relief", and "I'll Fly Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1980. Very Good ... $1.99
Larry Graham hits the slow jam generation – stepping aside from his funkier groove for this classic album – a record that gave the world a huge crossover cut in the title track! The main focus here is on Larry's vocals, not his basswork – and he does a surprisingly good job as a modern soul male vocalist on the set – one who's a bit more fragile and human at points than some of his contemporaries – still somewhat smooth, but not always as polished. Titles include the megahit "One In A Million You", plus "There's Something About You", "Forever Yours", "When We Get Married", "I Just Can't Stop Dancing", "I'm So Glad It's Summer Again", and "Sunshine Love & Music". Herbie HancockTreasure Chest ... LP
Warner, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
Seminal sides from Herbie Hancock – amazing material recorded for Warner Brothers in the years between his time at Blue Note and his big fame at Columbia Records – all sides that definitely show Hancock as one mighty righteous cat! Herbie's really stretching past his more conventional jazz of earlier years here – working both with a bit more electricity in his keys, and some larger arrangements that have a wonderful sense of flow and funk – a groove that definitely puts Hancock on a par with Quincy Jones at his funky best during the early 70s! The album's filled with great grooves pulled from the Warner Brothers albums by Hancock – including some quite long numbers – titles that include the funky nuggets "Wiggle Waggle", "Lil Brother", and "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" – plus "Sleeping Giant", "Crossings", "Quazar", "Ostinato", and "You'll Know When You Get There". John HartfordAereo Plain ... LP
Warner, 1971. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A groundbreaking album from the young John Hartford – not really folk, not really country – but a unique hybrid of both, and done with a good ear for unique sounds as well! Hartford's a really unique artist, especially at this key point in his career – and he's working here with producer David Bromberg, who himself was also helping to reinvent acoustic music at the time. The Warner Brothers placement of the record is key – as Hartford's got this sense of the past, mixed with the irony of the present – one which strongly echoes some of the hip rock contemporaries on the label, particularly the up and coming brand of post-Sunset LA talents. Titles include "Turn Your Radio On", "Up On The Hill Where They Do The Boogie", "First Girl I Loved", "With A Vamp In The Middle", and "Tear Down The Grand Ole Opry". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1989. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Great vocals and modern production – a mix of James Ingram's older roots in soul music, and some of the more contemporary soul modes coming down at the end of the 80s! Ingram's got a power in his voice that just won't quit – soaring out wonderfully and warmly, even when the rhythms are stark and electric – never buried too far in the mix, like some of his contemporaries on the scene. The album's split into two sides – "It's Real Hard" and "It's Real Soft" – the former of which is mostly upbeat, pop-soul material, the latter more ballads and key quiet storm tracks. Titles include "Call On Me", "It's Real", "So Fine", "Love Come Down", "Baby Be Mine", "Love 1 Day At A Time", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "A Natural Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Sublime sounds from Al Jarreau – exactly the kind of record that made him a unique superstar at the time of its release, and which still continues to fly Al's flag strongly all these many years later! Jarreau's got that perfect blend between jazz roots and soulful expression here – set up in backings that are a few shades hipper than AOR, and just as perfectly polished – the kind of superb setting that could take a singer like Al and really make him into something new – opening up his sound to a huge audience who might never have tapped into the singer otherwise. Titles include the killer classic "We're In This Love Together" – a cut that's almost a genre unto itself – plus "Closer To Your Love", "My Old Friend", "Roof Garden", "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Teach Me Tonight", and "My Old Friend". Johnny KeatingThis Bird Has Flown ... LP
Warner, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $3.99
One of our favorite albums ever by Johnny Keating! Long before he discovered the moog for his 70s funk albums, Keating was cranking out some fantastic big band work during the 60s – mixing together odd rhythmic patterns in a way that set his work apart from most other Brit leaders, coming up with strange rhythms and cool ways of laying out a tune – so that even if the title was familiar, the track grooved in ways that you'd never expect! This early American LP is a real gem – filled with groovy tunes that chop and waffle wonderfully – as Johnny takes tracks like "Qui", "Shangri-La", "It Was A Very Good Year", "Ebb Tide", "Girl Talk", and "Canadian Sunset – carving them up with odd syncopation and weird horn parts, making them all a dreamy delight! The title track's a mighty big hit for The Marketts – and it's also a great way to describe the group's talent for pushing past their boundaries at the time! The sound is surf instrumental at the core – but really stretches out to space themes, soundtrack areas, and more – thanks to inventive arrangements from Ray Pohlman, who pushes these guys farther than the usual groups of the time – while still keeping that guitar instrumental style that made them so great overall! There's a lot more variety to the tunes than you'd hear on a Ventures album, for example – and beautiful Bones Howe engineering makes sure that the sound is top-shelf throughout! Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $29.99
The Meters take their Crescent City groove in a slightly different direction – giving things a warmer, sunnier feel than their previous records – and bringing in a fair bit more vocals, too – yet still keeping all the right funky elements at the bottom! The move is a bit like that made by Allen Toussaint when he was helping out so many other artists in LA during the 70s – a tightness that's different than indie funk, but also a great way to evolve the New Orleans sound past its more regional roots! In other words, don't expect The Meters on Josie – but appreciate the record as a great bit of mainstream funk – one that has the Neville Brothers doing some of their best vocals as The Meters lay into a groove.
