Earl HagenI Spy – Music From The Television Series (Warner) ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong Kong) makes for some added musical touches that bring a groovy global aspect to the work. And given that Bill Cosby was a key member of the show, you can bet that things sound pretty darn hip! Titles include "Angel", "Hi Yo Scotty", "I Spy", "Ah So", "Away We Go To Mexico", "Made In Hong Kong", and "Fiesta Del Sol". LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne WarwickDionne (Warner) ... LP
Warner, 1972. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A great post-Scepter album by Dionne Warwick – one that still has her working with Burt Bacharach, but at a level that's somehow more mature, more adult than even before! There's a gentle quality here that gets beyond the straighter pop of Warwick's 60s hits, and moves into the realm inhabited by Bacharach's sublime solo sets for A&M – a style that still has the singer at the forefront, but which is equally concerned with the full spectrum of sound on the set, and which has the whole album flowing together beautifully. Burt and Hal David produced, and arrangements are by Bacharach, Don Sebesky, and Bob James. Titles include a great reading of "Hasbrook Heights", plus "I Just Have To Breathe", "The Balance Of Nature", "If You Never Say Goodbye", "Be Aware", "If We Only Have Love", and "Love Song". AmericaHarbor ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A lesser-remembered album from America, and one with some surprisingly nice moments, too! The group here are still working with producer George Martin – but they're recording in Hawaii, with some tight studio help – and almost hitting that sound they helped inspire in so many others with their earlier records – a perfect warm, mellow, seventies mode that's mighty nice throughout! A few tunes almost bring in an undercurrent of funk – more of a bit of a punch at the bottom, with less of the fragile acoustic modes of before – although a few nice tracks still have those in place as well. Drummer Willie Leacox brings in a nice kick to the set – and titles include "God Of The Sun", "Sergeant Darkness", "Sarah", "These Brown Eyes", "Don't Cry Baby", "Hurricane", and "Now She's Gone". Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner, 1982. Very Good+ ... $5.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

Ashford & SimpsonLove Will Fix It – The Best Of Ashford & Simpson ... LP
Warner/Groove Line Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $15.99
A great selection of work by the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson! The pair started out doing some excellent work at Motown during the early 70s – but it wasn't until they moved to Warner in the middle of the decade that they began to emerge as the powerhouse act they became for the rest of their career. Nick and Valerie changed the face of duet soul forever – taking it past the simple boy/girl themes of 60s work by artists like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell or Maxine Brown & Chuck Jackson, into a soaring, adult, hard-grooving mode that forever changed the way male and female voices interacted in soul music. Titles include a few 12" cuts on LP for the first time – "Is It Still Good To Ya (long version)", "Love Don't Make It Right (long version)", "One More Try (long version)", and "Ain't It A Shame (long version)". Other tracks include "Found A Cure", "It Seems To Hang On", "Don't Cost You Nothing", "Over & Over", "Nobody Knows", "It Shows In The Eyes", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Send It", "Somebody Told A Lie", "I'd Know You Anywhere", "Stay Free", "Main Line", "So So Satisfied", and "Have You Ever Tried It". One of the most iconic rock and roll shows of all time – the late 70s farewell to The Band – and quite famously, much more final concert by an esteemed band, it's actually a rock, pop, folk, blues and soul summit that features The Band as the house band. This landmark document of the event has always been one of rock's more opulent releases – with appearances by Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, The Staples and more. Includes "The From The Last Waltz", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "Down In South New Orleans" with Bobby Charles, "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan, "I Shall Be Released (Finale)", "Rag Mama Rag", "Further Up The Road" with Eric Clapton, "Dry Your Eyes" with Eric Clapton, "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris, "The Weight" with The Staples and more. A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". Bootsy's Rubber BandAhh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
Massive work from Bootsy Collins – one of his best-ever solo albums, and a perfect summation of the P-Funk groove – focused strongly through Bootsy's own sense of stardom! George Clinton worked with Collins on production, and the album's as tight as the best Parliament or Funkadelic work of the time – particularly the latter on their killer 70s sides for Warner, which was also the home for Bootsy. The Horny Horns are helping out on this one, which gives the album a strong instrumental drive – but the real star is Bootsy, whose sexy vocals and good sense of soul keep things firmly on track throughout. Features the cuts "What's A Telephone Bill?", "Munchies For Your Love", "We Want Bootsy", "The Pinocchio Theory", and "Rubber Duckie". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruby BraffRuby Braff Goes Girl Crazy ... LP
Warner, 1959. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by trumpeter Ruby Braff – a set that's hipper than some of his other 50s sessions, thanks to some wonderful sidemen! The sound here is still somewhat traditional, but there's also an undercurrent of 50s modern swing too – thanks to work by Jim Hall on guitar, Al Cohn on tenor, and Hank Jones on piano – all players who skew the record nicely away from some of the too-sweet or too-familiar modes of some of Ruby's other sessions. The music is all from the Gershwin score for Girl Crazy – played in a mellow and open-handed style that brings a new sense of swing to the tunes – and rhythm is by George Duvivier or Bob Haggart on bass, and Buzzy Drootin on drums. Titles include "Embraceable You", "Treat Me Rough", "But Not For Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "Bidin My Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Lenny BruceLaw, Language, & Lenny Bruce ... LP
Warner, Early 60s. Sealed ... $3.99
A great live recording by Lenny Bruce – and a rich document of the level of persecution he was made to feel from the US legal system! The album dates from 1974, but features an earlier performance held by Phil Spector, and licensed to Warner – one that features Lenny running through various instances of his persecution – including legal testimonies and transcripts. And although some albums from this time get a bit over-weighted with persecution, this set somehow manages to avoid most of those pitfalls – and still captures Lenny at his spontaneous best, at a time when he could still make jokes about most of these circumstances! ✨✧ Tim BuckleyGreetings From LA ... LP
Warner/Straight, 1972. Sealed ... $19.99
A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. Includes "Move With Me", "Get On Top", "Sweet Surrender", "Night Hawkin'", "Devil Eyes", "Hong Kong Bar" and "Make It Right". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete Christlieb/Warne MarshApogee ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb – recording them along with Lou Levy on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, and Nick Ceroli on drums, in a setting that's got a warm, acoustic feel. There's no tricks or electricity on the set – just a tight, angular approach to modern jazz – crafted in the twin-sax mode that Marsh recorded in often during the 50s. Titles include "Magnatism", "317 E 32nd", "Rapunzel", and "Tenors Of The Time". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lunarcy", "Love Me", and "How About You". LP, Vinyl record album

Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later sampling hip hop ones. The record's got a sophisticated soul approach that moves the music way past slapped basslines and funny glasses – and thanks to top-line musicianship, including some help from Fred Wesley, Bootsy avoids any cliches that might have buried this one under the mountain of P-Funk albums hitting the market at the same time. Of course, he's got some great help here too – from Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns, Midnight Star, Godmomma, and P-Funk regulars Bernie Worrell and Gary Shider – all of whom help contribute some classic elements to grooves that include "Shine O Myte", "#1 Funkateer", "So Nice You Name Him Twice", "Take A Lickin & Keep On Tickin", and "Countracula". Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
One of the classics from that 70s stretch when Alice Coltrane was really opening up her sound – not just walking away from more familiar jazz modes, but also embracing a very strong influence from Indian music and eastern thought as well! These elements had always been part of Coltrane's makeup somewhere in the background – but here, the modes are really foregrounded, as Alice plays some amazing organ, Fender Rhodes, and harp alongside a set of additional musicians that are mostly of Indian background – adding in some amazing percussion, and some incredibly haunting vocal chorus bits too! The approach is wonderful – different than her later, more meditative music – thanks in part to her excellent keyboards – and tracks include "Om Namah Sivaya", "Hare Krishna", and "Govinda Jai Jai". Alice plays organ, Fender Rhodes, and harp – building the sound as the album progresses, from simple airy strings to an earthier groove that features vocal refrains in unison with the keyboards, chanting away, over and over, stretching to the heavens in a cosmic groove! Most of the other musicians are Indian musicians, and the record features a lot of variations on traditional Indian themes – including "Sivaya", "Ghana Nila", and "Bhaja Govindam" – plus the original tracks "Transcendence" and "Vrindavana Sanchara". Excellent work by Alice Coltrane – a real back to basics session, recorded in trio format, at a time when most of her other albums featured larger, more complicated arrangements. The album was recorded live at UCLA in 1978 – with Alice on piano and organ, Reggie Workman on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the approach of the album has the group hitting a number of trance-like modes, spinning out in a freely searching style that's always one of the stronger sides of Alice's playing. One track, "Prema", features overdubbed strings, a bit like some of Alice's more ambitious work on Impulse – but other tracks are straight trio recordings, with titles that include "Krishnaya", "Leo", "Affinity", and "Transfiguration". Bill CosbyHooray For The Salvation Army Band! ... LP
Warner, 1968. Very Good+ ... $6.99
An early funk album by Bill Cosby – with backing by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band! Bill was pals with Charles Wright and crew in the hip LA of the late 60s, and he was also responsible for bringing the group to Warner Brothers – so the fit here is quite a natural one. The record was also produced by Fred Smith – who handled the Watts Band's albums – and it's got a very similar feel to their classics for Warner from the late 60s – but with Bill Cosby stepping out in front on vocals, in a similar style to Charles Wright. Cosby's singing is often a bit goofy, but works beautifully with the stoned to the bone feel of the group – a madder match than even Charles Wright, especially on the album's "parody soul" cuts. Titles include a classic break version of "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" – plus the titles "Ursalena", "Funky North Philadelphia", "Sunny", and a surprisingly great screaming version of "Sgt. Warner, 1967. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A weird little record from Bill Cosby – a set that's not as all-out funky as some of his other vocal albums, but still pretty nice overall! The style here is more bluesy than soul-based, but production is still by Fred Smith, of 103rd Street Rhythm Band fame – and the album has a sense of grit that's a lot stronger than you might guess. Many of the tunes are covers from an older R&B era, and Cosby takes them with an approach that's a bit tongue-in-cheek at times – kind of garbling the lyrics and muddying up the sound, even though we know he can sing a bit more clearly from other records! There's certainly a few tracks that have a nice gritty soul sound, and titles include the great "Little Ole Man" which is basically Bill doing a skit over the "Uptight" rhythm – plus "Bright Lights Big City", "Big Boss Man", "Hush Hush", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "Mojo Workout", "Doncha Know", and "Place In The Sun". This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". DevoQ: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good ... $24.99
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Devolution is real! The title's a bit pandering, but that's part of the manifesto this time, and the record's sure to please any fans of Devo's older work – even if it might seem like some sort of easy attempt to recreate the sound of 1981! All the classic elements are in place here – quirky rhythms, jerky vocals, and all the offbeat Devo sounds you might expect – all perhaps not as fresh as they were back in the day, but still remarkably present and untouched, given the passage of time! Titles include "Fresh", "What We Do", "Please Baby Please", "Mind Games"," Human Rocket", and "Step Up". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill EvansNew Conversations ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A wonderful late 70s albums from Bill Evans – showing a further evolution of his solo piano/overdub approach! New Conversations is a record that follows strongly on the format of Bill's famous "Conversations" sessions for Verve in the 60s – and like those dates, it features the pianist playing alongside himself, thanks to the magic of overdubbing. But unlike those, this one also features a bit of electric piano too – picked up from the Left & Right years, and played alongside the acoustic piano in a shimmering sort of sound that's really great. The tones are tremendous – almost more open and fluid than in any Evans trio dates of the time – and the whole thing's got a ringing quality that's as much about sonic textures as it is about melody. Titles include "Song For Helen", "I Love My Wife", "For Nenette", "Maxine", "Nobody Else But Me", "After You", and "Reflections In D". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the few larger group Bill Evans sessions from the later years – an album that features sax and flute from Larry Schneider and trumpet from Tom Harrell – in addition to core trio instrumentation from Bill on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes. Bill plays a bit of electric piano on the set – especially beautifully on the track "Only Child" – and other titles include "Comrade Conrad", "Peri's Scope", "We Will Meet Again", "Bill's Hit Tune", "Laurie", "Five", and "For All We Know". Warner, 1962. Very Good ... $4.99
A really wonderful Christmas album – one that matches the heavenly vocals of The Everly Brothers with the Boys Town Choir! Phil and Don are still out in the lead on most numbers, but they also get strong support from the pillow of sound provided by the larger chorus – used here in these dreamy ways that make for a real change from the usual Everly groove, especially since there's almost no other instrumentation on the record! The lack of studio polish or rocking grooves makes for a very personal moment – almost as if you've caught the Everly Brothers celebrating the Holiday privately at midnight mass – on a host of tunes that include "Silent Night", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "The First Noel", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "What Child Is This", and "Adeste Fideles". A bit of jazzy magic from Fagen – stepping out from the cover of Steely Dan after the Gaucho album, and sounding pretty darn great on his own! The record is almost nostalgic, going back to a 50s of Brubeck, abstract expressionism, and pre-Castro Havana – filled with images that are a bit less oblique than those of Fagen's work with Steely Dan, and a love for the subject matter that makes us like the record even more. Musically, the set follows strongly from Gaucho, but has perhaps a bit more straight jazz – and titles include "The Goodbye Look", "Walk Between Raindrops", "IGY", "Green Flower Street", and "New Frontier". Quite possibly our favorite Gang Of Four album – and the one in which their funk approach really seems to work! The album's got a camp appeal that can't be denied – known famously for it's big post-disco hit "I Love A Man In Uniform" – but overall the whole thing actually seems pretty well thought out – taking the heady politics of earlier records, and putting them into catchy guitar-driven dancefloor tracks that clearly get the message out to a whole new audience of converts! Titles include "Call Me Up", "I Love A Man In Uniform", "Life It's A Shame", "I Will Be A Good Boy", "The History Of The World", "Muscle For Brains", "Of The Instant", and the sublime William Blake-inspired groover "We Live As We Dream, Alone". Sweetly soulful work from Gilberto Gil – an album that almost has him in the same sort of R&B-inspired territory as Marcos Valle's early 80s albums! Instrumentation includes a fair bit of keyboards and electric rhythms – all put together quite nicely by Gil, Lincoln Olivetti, and Liminha – with a style that borrows heavily from American soul of the time, yet still keeps enough of Gil's own spirit intact. The album's supposedly dedicated to John Lennon – but given the sound, that's more of a side note than anything else. A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". Warner, 1976. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Brilliant 70s material by Antonio Carlos Jobim – one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting – moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! There's a richness to the songs that goes way past simple bossa styles – and the lyrical brilliance shows that Jobim hardly ever needed a poet or co-writer to help him hit the heights – as he really wins us over with his words as much as his music. Claus Ogerman produced, and gives things the right balance between fullness and space in the charts – which allows both a great focus on Antonio's vocal style – expressive, but very down to earth – and a few nice solos on Fender Rhodes too! One of our favorite albums ever by Johnny Keating! Long before he discovered the moog for his 70s funk albums, Keating was cranking out some fantastic big band work during the 60s – mixing together odd rhythmic patterns in a way that set his work apart from most other Brit leaders, coming up with strange rhythms and cool ways of laying out a tune – so that even if the title was familiar, the track grooved in ways that you'd never expect! This early American LP is a real gem – filled with groovy tunes that chop and waffle wonderfully – as Johnny takes tracks like "Qui", "Shangri-La", "It Was A Very Good Year", "Ebb Tide", "Girl Talk", and "Canadian Sunset – carving them up with odd syncopation and weird horn parts, making them all a dreamy delight! Roost/Warner (Japan), 1955. New Copy (reissue)... $52.99
One of the best-remembered jazz albums from singer Bev Kelly – partly for the record's great use of guitar by Johnny Smith, but also for the great vocals from Bev herself! The album's one of a few that really set a new standard for small combo jazz in the 50s – different than the bigger band records with singers, but also not nearly as cabaret-styled as some of the other records with a small group behind the vocalist. Smith's tone is wonderful – that moody, mellow magic he did so well – and his pairing here is not unlike that of Barney Kessel with Julie London, but with much more of a New York vibe overall. There's a bit of Jimmy Bowman-esque bass bumping along the bottom at times, which makes for an especially nice groove – and titles include "Goin Out Of My Head", "Girl Talk", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Call Me", "I'm Old Fashioned", "Bluesette", "I Get The Blues When It Rains", and "Don't Go To Strangers". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and a patch of marker on the back.)

Rahsaan Roland KirkKirkatron ... LP
Warner, 1977. Sealed ... $13.99
Later genius from Rahsaan Roland Kirk – a record of wonderful depth and soul, and a session that moves back to the straighter jazz focus of some of his work from the Mercury years – yet still keeps all the personality and charm of the best Atlantic sides! Roland's playing in a warm jazzy mode that still features some of his wit and tricks – but which also is even more nicely in a straight jazz vein on the album's best tracks – rolling out in a gently soulful 70s mode that features some slight electric touches, but which preserves a main focus on his own soulful work on a variety of saxes and flute. The lineup is great too – with a shifting group of players that include Hilton Ruiz, Billy Butler, Walter Perkins, and even the great Trudy Pitts – and titles include "Sugar", "Serenade To A Cuckoo", "The Christmas Song", "Los Angeles Negro Chorus", "Bright Moments", "Night In Tunisia", and "J. Griff's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed 70s pressing!)
