✨✧ UrubambaUrubamba (Warner) ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The flute sound of the Andes gets a bit of a hip 70s twist – in this album produced by Paul Simon, caught somewhere between his version of "El Condor Pasa" and his later South African pop. The group's got a traditional Peruvian feel – pan flutes, percussion, and a bit of guitar – augmented by some larger production touches that expand the sound past the folkloric. Titles include "Campanas De Santa Cruz", "Buena Nueva", "Una", "Canten Cantores", and "Urumbamba". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

B-52sB-52s ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned postwar America, one in which the neuroses are all on the outside – served up with instrumentation that's stark, but incredibly tight – snapping drums, riffing guitar, and these great organ lines that sound beautiful next to the vocals of Fred and the girls. The set gave the group their perennial hit "Rock Lobster" – but taken as a whole, it's an incredibly different landscape – as you'll discover on tracks that include "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Dance This Mess Around", "Lava", "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)", "Hero Worship", "6060-842" and "Downtown". B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner, 1980. Near Mint- ... $16.99
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". BadfingerWish You Were Here ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... $99.99
The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. The album's overflowing with hooks, and the kinds of songs that should have been huge – and maybe that's what makes it such a treat all these many years later. Titles include "Just A Chance", "Got To Get Out Of Here", "Dennis", "No One Knows", "In The Meantime/Some Other Time", "King Of The Load", "Love Time", and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke". Warren Barker77 Sunset Strip – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1959. Very Good ... $4.99
A very groovy set of cop show jazz from the classic TV show 77 Sunset Strip – every bit as tasty as some of Henry Mancini's work for similar programs at the time! Warren Barker's got a really playful approach to the tunes on the set – mixing together straight jazz with some nice bachelor pad touches in the arrangements – often giving instruments like piano or trombone a slightly off-kilter feel, thanks to the way they're recorded. Most of the tunes have swinging and jaunty rhythms that groove around in a cool late 50s sort of way – and although there's a few standards thrown into the mix, the overall presentation is fresh enough to make them feel like originals! Titles include "Late At Bailey's Pad", "Cleo's Theme", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Kookie's Caper", "Stu Bailey's Blues", "Caper At The Coffee House", "77 Sunset Strip Cha Cha", and "Blue Night On The Strip". John BarryPetulia ... LP
Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A pretty compelling John Barry score – written for this strange semi-comedy which starred George C Scott and Julie Christie, and which was directed by Richard Lester. The music is a mixture of groovy themes and slower numbers that still have a modulated groovy approach – strings gliding with a gentle submerged groove, in a warm easy fashion, but not as dramatic as more conventional soundtracks. There's plenty of great moments on the set – and the soundtrack's a good example of the way that Barry increasingly began to explore space within his compositions as the 60s went on. Titles include "Eat Topless", "Comprehendo", "Petulia", "Motel", "Highway 101", and "Friends Of The Evergreen". LP, Vinyl record album

A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". George BensonIn Your Eyes ... LP
Warner, 1983. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Sweetly jazzy soul from George Benson – a key classic from his great run at Warner Brothers Records, and the kind of record that George did better than anyone else at the time! Back in the 60s, we'd never have guessed that Benson's sweetly crackling vocals would dominate popular jazz more than his great guitar work – but hearing George here, it's clear that his soul work could easily outshine his guitar, especially when set up in a package like this! Atlantic soul maestro Arif Mardin produced, and as with his Chaka Khan productions for Warner at the time, he gives Benson a clean, clear modern style that's certainly pop, but also a lot less cluttered and clunky than modes used with other artists at the time. George is mostly on the vocal tip for the set, and Kashif helps out on one track – no surprise, given that Kashif was soon to walk down the path that Benson had started with his first few vocal albums in the 70s. Titles include "Love Will Come Again", "Use Me", "Late At Night", "In Search Of A Dream", "Lady Love Me", "In Your Eyes", and "Never Too Far To Fall". LP, Vinyl record album

Black SabbathBlack Sabbath ... LP
Warner, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $999.99
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". LP, Vinyl record album

Black SabbathParanoid (180 gram pressing) ... LP

Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Tim BuckleyGreetings From LA ... LP
Warner/Straight, 1972. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. Barbara CarrollLive! Her Piano & Trio ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A cooking little live set from pianist Barbara Carroll – and a set that definitely shows the stronger approach to the keys she was using in the 60s! Some moments still have Carroll hitting those fluid, lyrical modes that graced her important 50s recordings – but others show a definite strength on the left hand too, which punches things up in a way that really emphasizes the rhythms and which show that Barbara's been listening to some of the younger players of the soul jazz generation! The rhythm players – Dick Sheridan on drums and percussion, and Beverly Peer on bass – both show a nice ability to change up the groove and keep things interesting – again in ways that echo the younger generation. Titles include "What Now My Love", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Fiddler On The Roof Medley", "On A Clear Day", "Suzie's Bossa Nova", and "Satin Doll". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/KTI (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99
One of the coolest records ever from guitarist Philip Catherine, and one of the funkiest too – thanks to a really sharp edge that you won't find on some of his other albums, and lots of Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin too! Some of Catherine's other records of the 70s were a bit laidback or noodly – but this set's got a strong, soulful drive all the way through – a nice focus that may well come from the production of Sacha Distel, himself a onetime guitarist! But the group's just got things right on the money, right from the start – with some very strong funky drums from Freddy Rotheir, plus trombone from Jiggs Wigham and both bass and flute from Freddy Deronde. Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb – recording them along with Lou Levy on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, and Nick Ceroli on drums, in a setting that's got a warm, acoustic feel. There's no tricks or electricity on the set – just a tight, angular approach to modern jazz – crafted in the twin-sax mode that Marsh recorded in often during the 50s. Titles include "Magnatism", "317 E 32nd", "Rapunzel", and "Tenors Of The Time". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lunarcy", "Love Me", and "How About You". LP, Vinyl record album

Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. A tasty LP from Deodato's later years where he was leaning a little more heavily on commercial R&B and soul for inspiration than his jazzier approach of earlier years. Motion has Deodato moving into the realm of 80s soul – using a bit more of an electro feel overall – one that often includes work on Prophet, Linn drums, and DMX next to the more traditional instrumentation of the set. There's some great vocals from the Juicy team of Jerry and Katreese Barnes – singing in a style that's deeply soulful, and which really balances out the electronics with a good deal of vocal warmth. Warner, 1970. Very Good+ ... $59.99
Post Beau Brummels work by Ron Elliott – and a set that really echoes the group's best moments on Bradley's Barn and some of the later albums! The style here is slightly rootsy, as in the later years of the BB's – a blend of country influences and California hip – often played with small group instrumentation, but carried off with a chromatic sophistication that's really unique – a bit like the work of Tom Rapp, but not nearly as tortured. Elliott's vocals are great – sometimes gruff, but certainly with a great degree of humanity – and titles include the two-part, side-long "Candlestickmaker Suite", plus "Lazy Day", "All Time Green", "Deep River Runs Blue", and "To The City To The Sea". Deep deep soul from Lorraine Ellison – a record that already shows quite a bit of growth from her earlier Warner Brothers recordings – and a new sense of hipness as well! There's definitely an influence here of the sound of Stax and Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s – all focused through the excellent production and songwriting of Jerry Ragovoy, who's a key influence on the record – and who really helps make it one of Lorraine's greatest moments ever! If you've ever wanted to dig Lorraine Ellison, this is definitely the place to start – as it's an album we'd easily stack next to the best from any of our favorite female deep soul singers. Tracks include the classic "Stay With Me", plus "I Want To Be Loved", "Heart Be Still", "You Don't Know Nothing About Love", and "The Hurt Came Back Again". LP, Vinyl record album

A 1977 album for Warner Brothers – one that has the group hitting a smoother, tighter sort of sound – nicely compressed 70s pop, of the sort that both Frankie and the Seasons had been hitting in some of their individual chart forays during the decade. Bob Gaudio's very firmly in charge here – producing and writing the lyrics, and really showing a good talent for this sort of more adult approach to pop. Frankie himself is a bit more in the background than you might think, but that's also one of the things that makes the album so nice. Titles include "If We Should Lose Our Love", "Let's Get It Right", "Long Ago", "Rhapsody", "New York Street Song", and "I Believe In You". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic set of city pop from the Japanese scene of the early 80s – music that's got tight, AOR-styled arrangements and production, but also a stronger current of soul that really keeps things interesting! Yoshino Fujimal sings in Japanese on some tracks, but the album's got a really universal sort of vibe that goes beyond the language – catchy, groovy tunes that have a lot more warmth in the instrumentation than mainstream 80s pop in the US – that whole generation of Japanese artists who grew up on jazz fusion, but then turned it towards soulful pop. The set's divided up into a Day Time side and a Night Time side – with Japanese on the former, and English on the latter – on titles that include "Shang-Hide Night", "Free Way 5 To South", "Who Are You", "Midnight Plus 1", "Pretender", and "Girl's In Love With Me". A bit of an attempt to dive into early 80s mainstream soul – and one that stands the test of time a lot better than we would have expected, despite the super-polished production that all but buries the group's earlier harder-edged style. There's a lot of really nice soulful backing vocals, and sparkling Brit-synth-drum machine funk that gives the production a bit of a Nile Rodgers feel, and even reminds us, weirdly, of some of the modern touches in Raphael Saadiq's work. ✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithCapricorn One ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A bold score for a famous 70s astronaut film – penned by Jerry Goldsmith with almost the same sort of drama he might bring to a war thriller! The story itself is pretty dark – as the astronauts don't make it to space, but are forced into a Air Force base – and Goldsmith's music really follows suit – a really dominating set of orchestrations, with turgid rhythms at the bottom, blaring horn parts on the top, and offbeat instrumental phrases that sort of cascade down, almost in a claustrophobic way. There's less of the funkier or groovier moments you might know from earlier Goldsmith scores, but the soundtrack's still a great one, with a surprising amount of power, even away from the film. Titles include "Break Out", "The Message", "No Water", "Bedtime Story", "The Snake", "Kay's Theme", "The Letter", and "The Celebration". LP, Vinyl record album

The score was penned by Jerry Goldsmith, whose talent for creating off-beat string passages makes for some great "bee-like" moments in this one – times when the strings really swarm around nicely, and convey the spooky feel of the film! Orchestrations are by Arthur Morton, and titles include "The Bees Arrive", "Gift Of Flowers", "The Bee's Picnic", "Tommy's Death", "Don't Take Him", and "Exact Instructions". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Graham hits the slow jam generation – stepping aside from his funkier groove for this classic album – a record that gave the world a huge crossover cut in the title track! The main focus here is on Larry's vocals, not his basswork – and he does a surprisingly good job as a modern soul male vocalist on the set – one who's a bit more fragile and human at points than some of his contemporaries – still somewhat smooth, but not always as polished. Warner, 1958. Very Good ... $18.99
Quite possibly the best album to feature the talents of Chico Hamilton and Eric Dolphy – a set recorded at a time when Dolphy was an up-and-coming player on the west coast scene! Although Chico Hamilton had recorded with unusual reed players before, Dolphy brings a depth of soul and spirit to this album that's missing from a lot of Chico's earlier work at the time – a style that still holds onto some of the measured qualities of the Pacific Jazz work by the Hamilton group, yet which also opens up into some of the darker corners that Dolphy would explore more on his own recordings of the 60s. The group also features some great guitar by Dennis Budimir and cello by Nathan Gershman – but the real standout aspects of the set come from Dolphy's work on flute, alto, and bass clarinet. Hard to believe that anyone would call Madleen Kane a rough diamond – especially with her polished look on the cover, and an equally polished set of grooves underneath! The album features arrangements from the team of Tony Lester and Thor Baldurson – and you can definitely hear Baldurson's classic disco groove firmly in place – pushing things forward with a really compact sense of rhythm at the bottom, one that almost points the way towards 80s sounds, but still with plenty of 70s club warmth – and a brace of strings and other sweet instrument over the top! With a setting like this, you could drop in just about any singer and get a great disco album – but nicely, Madleen manages to bring a little "something extra" to her performance to really send the whole thing home with her sexy vocal approach. A lost chapter in the career of cellist Fred Katz – an album recorded after his small combo work with Chico Hamilton, and sort of a larger group take on the whimsical sound of the classic Hamilton Quintet! The tracks are all older folk tunes, adapted by Katz to fit a chamber jazz mode – and featuring shifting instrumentation from track to track, in order to fit the African, American, or Jewish origins of the tunes. Although the concept may sound a bit gimmicky, the record's actually pretty darn great from a jazz perspective – and is one of the few to show the real depth of Katz as a leader! Players include Billy Bean on guitar, Gene Estes on vibes, Jack Costanzo on percussion, Pete Candoli on trumpet, and Paul Horn on flute and alto – all great talents for this sort of work, especially Horn, whose reed lines help keep things lively. Hard to imagine Anita Kerr being turned on – especially given her school marm-ish look on the cover – but the album's a pretty darn groovy set, and one that certainly shows Kerr picking up some of the best easy elements of the 60s! The Burt Kaempfert touch is heard here especially in the album's use of electric bass – a nicely bouncing element that gives most of the tunes a lot more of a bottom than some of Kerr's other work – used in that trademark stepping style that Burt first laid down himself a few years before on worldwide instrumental hits, and made even better here by Anita's great quartet and their warmly-crafted vocal harmonies! Titles include many tunes presented in a Kaempfert-styled way – but with vocals – and tracks include "Love", "I Can't Help Remembering You", "Two Can Live On Love Alone", 'Spanish Eyes", "Remember When", "Danke Schoen", "Strangers In The Night", "Wonderland By Night", and "A Swingin' Safari". Yet what's great about the record is that all these talents put aside their ego and follow Bobby's lead – in a groove that's maybe a bit southern soul, a bit down-home rock – with some definite currents of Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the music.
