✨✧ David SanbornSanborn ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1976. Used ... $8.99
A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the backings strongly – blowing some of his best notes with surprisingly little flourish, and crafting a soulful lead that's supported by work from Hiram Bullock on guitar, Rosalinda De Leon on keyboards, and Victor Lewis on drums. There's a bit of vocals on the album – courtesy of Patti Austin, Lain Groves, Phoebe Snow, and Paul Simon – and titles include "Indio", "Smile", "Concrete Boogie", "Mamacita", and "7th Ave". CD

✨✧ David SanbornTaking Off ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album from David Sanborn – a lot more than you might expect if you only know him from later years! Sure, the record's tight – and yes, Sanborn was a crossover player from the start – but there's some great moments here, and the whole thing's got a lot more of an edge at points than you'd expect – a nice rasp in Sanborn's alto, reminding us a bit of the early sounds we heard coming from Tom Scott on his best sides. Randy Brecker plays trumpet in the group, and Mike Brecker's on tenor – and there's definitely a bit of Brecker Brothers soul overall – some undercurrents of funk that also come through in the guitars of Steve Khan and Joe Beck. Arrangements are by David Matthews, Don Grolnick, and Howard Johnson – and titles include "Butterfat", "Duck Ankles", "Black Light", "Blue Night", "Flight", "Funky Banana", and "The Whisperer". CD

✨✧ Talib KweliEardrum ... CD
Blacksmith/Warner, 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Kweli's debut for Warner Bros, via his own Blacksmith label – and his best work in years – back in top form after a waning couple of years on Rawkus/Interscope! Kweli laid some dynamite in the underground in the first half of the 00s letting us know he still had it even if the LPs were hit & miss, and if Eardrum isn't perfect (and a bit heavy with guest appearances), he's still dropping impossible verses over over tight production – by Madlib, Just Blaze, Pete Rock and others! A very strong set from veteran who still might have his best work ahead of him. Includes "Everything Man", "My Weather Report", Hostile Gospel", "Say Something" with Jean Grae, "Country Cousins" feat UGK & Raheem Devaughn, "Holy Moly", "Eat To Live", "Stay Around", "The Perfect Beat" feat KRS One, and more, plus the bonus tracks "Go With Us" feat Strong Arm Steady, "Hostile Gospel Pt 2" feat Sizzla and "The Nature" featuring same kid named Justin Timberlake (never heard of him). ✨✧ Talking HeadsRemain In Light (CD & DVD pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sire/Warner, 1980. Used CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. Brian Eno produced, and co-wrote the songs with the group – and some great Green World-esque electronics bubble through the mix, and hold the whole thing together beautifully. Titles include "Houses In Motion", "Once In A Lifetime", "The Great Curve", "Crosseyed & Painless", "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", "Listening Wind", "Seen & Not Seen", and "The Overload". CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Fela's Riff", "Unison", "Double Groove", and "Right Start" – and the DVD features high resolution 5.1 Surround mix of the original album plus a photo gallery and bonus videos! Tower Of PowerTower Of Power ... CD
Warner, 1973. Used ... $3.99
One of the harder funk albums by Tower Of Power – done with a hard-driving horn-heavy groove, slathered up in East Bay Grease! The group's got a bit of the stoner funk sound that shows their Bay Area roots, but they're also a lot tighter than most of their California contemporaries, and feel more like some of the groups coming out of Memphis and Muscle Shoals at the same time. Lenny Williams is on lead vocals, Chester Thompson plays organ – and tracks include "Soul Vaccination", "What Is Hip", "So Very Hard To Go", "Just Another Day", "Clean Slate", "Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground", and "Clever Girl". Warner, 1982. Used ... $34.99
The only record from this group that would sort of morph into Apollonia 6, one of many Prince vehicles during the 80s. As you'd hope from a Prince side project, the tracks here bubble with his new wave/pop/funk crossover, though really the hit "Nasty Girl" is pretty much the only standout, but a great one at that. Also includes "Wet Dream", "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)", "Bite The Beat" and "3x2=6". CD

Dionne WarwickThen Came You ... CD
Warner/Spy, 1974. Used ... $4.99
A surprise mid 70s hit for Dionne Warwick – a warm and bubbling bit of soul, done with uptown maestro Jerry Ragovoy in a perfect AM pop style! The centerpiece of the album is the super-hit tune "Then Came You" – a duet with The Spinners produced and arranged by Thom Bell at Sigma Sound, and one of those tunes that sounded instantly great, and stayed on the airwaves for years. Ragovoy expands on this style for the rest of the album – moving past the easy hit hook to show Dionne as a maturing singer of her time, working in a variety of moods that stretch way past the early Bacharach hits. Titles include "Move Me No Mountain", "How Can I Tell Him", "Getting In My Way", "Who Knows", "Take It From Me", and "We'll Burn Our Bridges Behind Us". CD

ZappVibe ... CD
Warner/Reprise, 1989. Used ... $0.99
A set that's late in the classic Zapp run from the 80s, but a record that's still very much head and shoulders above the competition – including the many acts who were trying to cop Roger Troutman's groove, but never got things this right! There's still plenty of bass at the bottom, re-fitted to more of a late 80s funk mode – and some of the trickier turns have the group really serving up that link to P-Funk that's always made them so great – and at a level that maybe even George Clinton couldn't even match at the time. Vocoder bits continue that great Zapp vocal legacy too – used in sparing amounts, but still a wonderful touch – and titles include "Ooh Baby Baby", "I Play The Talk Box", "Fire", "Been This Way Before", "Back To Bass-iks", "Ain't The Thing To Do", "Rock Star", "Jesse Jackson", and "Jake E Stanstill". ZappZapp ... CD
Warner, 1980. Used ... $6.99
The classic first album by this legendary funky combo – a group who not only went onto change the sound of funk in the 80s, but also went onto have a huge impact on generations of hip hop as well! The album burns from the very first note – the wicked snapping funk of "More Bounce To The Ounce" – a tune that became the blueprint for a generation, and still sounds way better than the millions of copycat attempts that came out over the years! The record follows with some equally wicked bass/keyboard cuts – often with plenty of electro production touches too – thanks to sweeeet work in the studio from Bootsy Collins and Roger Troutman. Bootsy's presence is key, too – as the set kind of strips down the ensemble P-Funk vibe of the generation before – going for a lean, clean groove that's held up beautifully over the years! In addition to "More Bounce To The Ounce", the record also features the mellow steppers cut "Be Alright", which has a wonderful hook, and a great compressed modern soul sound – and other tracks include "Funky Bounce", "Freedom", and "Brand New Pplayer". Warner/Reprise, Early 80s. Used ... $2.99
The true heroes of mainstream funk in the early 80s – the legendary Roger Troutman and Zapp – key heirs to the sounds of P-Funk in the 70s, with a groove that stretched all the way from their native Ohio to make a huge impact in LA! This collection features most of the group's key tracks from their Warner albums of the early 80s, plus some added remixes done in 1993 for the package – and together, the combination of styles helped to make this a record that's sold as well as any of the original albums in the group's catalog! Titles include "More Bounce To The Ounce", "Be Alright", "Do It Roger", "Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)", "So Ruff So Tuff", "Dance Floor", "Heartbreaker (parts 1 & 2)", "Slow & Easy", "Mega Medley", and "Computer Love" – plus 1993 remixes of "Midnight Hour", "Curiosity", and "Night & Day". Average White BandWarmer Communications/Benny & Us ... CD
Sony, 1977/1978. Used 2CD ... $11.99
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a set of tunes that still have a fair bit of the funky touches of earlier records, but which also go for a few mellower tunes too – of the sort that were becoming the group's strongest suit at the time. "She's A Dream" is a great example of this style – a nicely gliding number that still has a nice groove at the bottom – and while the set doesn't include any standout hits, it's still a great example of why AWB could pull off this sort of record a lot better than most of their contemporaries! Titles include "She's A Dream", "Warmer Communications", "Price Of The Dream", "Sweet & Sour", "One Look Over My Shoulder", "Your Love Is A Miracle", and "Same Feeling Different Song". On Benny & Us, Ben E King joins the Average White Band for this sweet 70s set – a killer record that not only stands as one of King's best efforts of the decade, but one that also gives the group a great new frontman! Ben's not the only singer on the record, but his presence here can definitely be felt – deepening up the grooves nicely, and giving the already-great AWB sound an even more badass feel! Titles include the classic "Star In The Ghetto", a funky remake of "What Is Soul", an earlier hit for King – plus "Keepin It To Myself", "Imagine", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Get It Up For Love", and "The Message". ✨✧ Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Invisible Man's BandReally Wanna See You (with bonus track) ... CD
Boardwalk/FTG, 1981. Used ... $14.99
A great later effort from the 5 Stairsteps family – a later offshoot of the initial enterprise, still working here under the production helm of father Clarence Burke! Keni Burke's a member of the group, and the work here has a very similar groove to his own RCA material of the time – offset with some warmer elements that also echo the previous Stairsteps records on Warner, especially given that a number of the cuts have group vocals. Keni's bass does a nice job of kicking in the grooves, and the album's got a nicely warm sound for the time – almost more late 70s group funk than early 80s boogie. Titles include the sweet harmony track called "Along The Way" – plus "Party Time", "Circles", "Rated X", "Really Wanna See You", and "Same Thing". CD also features bonus track "Rated X (edited version)". CD

Rick JamesWonderful ... CD
Reprise/Collectables, 1987. Used ... $3.99
Rick James makes the move away from Motown here – heading over to Warner/Reprise, in the Prince side of the spectrum – along with a cover image that has him wearing a paisley costume on top of a purple background – in a way that could well make the buyer think that Rick's working with Prince! But despite these Prince-like trappings (which also include some more Purple Rain-ish costumes on the inside cover), Rick's still writing, producing, and arranging himself – hitting a groove that clearly inspired by the success of his Paisley Park competition, but which is also kind of a natural extension of the Rick James funk sound into the end of the 80s. Roxanne Shante and Big Daddy Kane make some guest appearances on the album – and titles include "Loosey's Rap", "Hypnotize", "I Believe In U", "In The Girl's Room", "Sherry Baby", "Love's Fire", "Wonderful", "So Tight", and "Sexual Luv Affair". LabellePressure Cookin' ... CD
RCA/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $9.99
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the slightly less-formed modes of their Warner Brothers years – finding a really badass sort of territory that would serve them well for the rest of the 70s! The shift really pays off – as there's a number of good funky numbers on the album – and some righteous political lyricism in the mix, too – but also some mellower moments that really round things out nicely. The trio riff on a version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", as led into by the cut "Something In The Air" – and other numbers include "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", "Mr. Music Man", "Goin' On a Holiday", "Open Up Your Heart", "Let Me See You In The Light", and "Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood". Solar, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet beats and plenty of grooves – an 80s funk classic from Midnight Star, and one that seems to have the group picking up a bit of energy from the hip hop scene as well! The album's still got the electro soul vibe of previous records, but maybe is even beat-heavier overall – almost showcasing a style that would later emerge as new jack in the hands of some younger artists within the next few years – but still perfect for the kind of playful interplay that made the Midnight groove so great! Titles include "Midas Touch", "Stay Here By My Side", "Close To Midnight", "Searching For Love", "Close Encounter", "Dead End", "Get Dressed", "Engine No 9", and "Headlines". CD

Randy NewmanRandy Newman (second cover) ... CD
Reprise, 1969. Used ... $6.99
An insanely wonderful first album from Randy Newman – and a perfect example of the way his unique style was a key confluence of all the best elements simmering underneath both late 60s LA and late 60s Warner Brothers! There's an instantly nostalgic quality to the record, but one that's nicely undercut by Newman's familiar sense of wit – a bit more subtle here, and presented with amazing backings from Van Dyke Parks – who almost brings in a lightly symphonic touch at times. The work's almost in the vein of hipper jazz sides by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg at the time – and although some of the tunes are familiar from later versions, they still sound best here in Randy's originals. Titles include "Love Story", "So Long Dad", "I Think He's Hiding", "Laughing Boy", "Cowboy", "The Beehive State", "Davy The Fat Boy", and "Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad". CD

✨✧ Raymond ScottReckless Nights & Turkish Twilights – The Music Of Raymond Scott ... CD
Columbia, Late 30s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful batch of instrumentals from the legendary Raymond Scott – and a set that features some of Scott's most wonderful compositions ever! These numbers all date from the 30s, and were originally released as 78s on the Master Records label – but this later Columbia package really brings the sounds together wonderfully, and gives Scott a long-overdue showcase as one of the budding modernists of the pre-war years – a composer who could match swing and whimsy, exoticism and jazz, playfulness and poise – all without every losing his beat! The instrumental is wonderful, the arrangements inventive, and the whole thing's got the same sort of audio appeal as an old Warner Brothers cartoon. Titles include "Twilight In Turkey", "The Penguin", "The Toy Trumpet", "Powerhouse", "New Years Eve In A Haunted House", "War Dance For Wooden Indians", "Peter Tambourine", and "At An Arabian House Party".
