Marty Paich Big BandI Get A Boot Out Of You ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1959. Used ... $14.99
Sparkling work from arranger Marty Paich – one of our favorite large group talents of the 50s! The album definitely gets a boot out of us – not just for its sexy, shower-situated cover on the front – but also for its great approach to the music, penned here by Paich in ways that really let some of the key players step out and do their thing! The group is large, but always swinging – and players include Art Pepper and Bill Perkins on saxes, Conte Candoli and Jack Sheldon on trumpets, Bob Enevoldsen on trombone, and Victor Feldman on vibes – and tracks include "No More", "Moanin", "Warm Valley", "What Am I Here For", "Violets For Your Furs", and "It Don't Mean A Thing". Dan PennDo Right Man ... CD
Sire/Warner/Blue Horizon, 1994. Used ... $6.99
A great comeback moment for one of the seminal songwriters of 60s southern soul – heard here in a surprisingly faithful setting that really returns Dan Penn to his glory! The tunes include many numbers that Dan wrote, but which were made famous by other singers at the time – and although early demo versions with vocals by a young Penn would circulate over the years, these later takes are quite strong too – produced by Dan himself, on titles that include "Cry Like A Man", "Dark End Of The Street", "Do Right Woman", "You Left The Water Running", "I'm Your Puppet", and "Memphis Women & Chicken". ✨✧ PrinceFor You ... CD
Warner, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Compelling early work from Prince – with a host of influences present on the surface, showing more clearly from whence he developed his unique sound. There's a bit of the record that reminds us of Shuggie Otis mid 70s output, and other tracks show that Prince had been paying attention to the keyboard-heavy sounds in the soul industry – as solos on a few of these numbers almost show a jazz funk impulse. The best cuts are the mellow ones – and titles include "For You", "Soft & Wet", "Crazy You", "Baby", "So Blue", and "I'm Yours". A seed of what was to come, but still amazing! CD

✨✧ PrincePrince ... CD
Warner, 1979. Used ... $4.99
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating record that stands up with some of his best work, and bucks all late 70s trends and cliches in pop, soul and funk! In some ways this is one of our favorite Prince records, as it has a kind of intimacy that was lacking on later sets – or maybe because the hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" has such a mad groove! "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" has the sly sound that would run throughout the rest of Prince's better work for years to come – and Chaka Khan would later cover "I Feel for You", and hit large with it in the 80s. Also includes "Sexy Dancer", "With You" and "When We're Dancing Close & Slow". CD

PrincePurple Rain (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Warner, 1984. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly catchy tunes that are still delivered with a nice funky undercurrent. The whole Prince family is at the top of their game at this point – and titles include "Darling Nikki", "Let's Go Crazy", "I Would Die 4 U", "When Doves Cry", "Baby I'm A Star", and "Purple Rain". This fantastic 2CD version features a completely new 2015 Paisley Park remaster of the album, done by Prince – plus a full CD that features unreleased songs and tracks from the vaults – with titles that include "Katrina's Paper Dolls", "We Can F**k", "Father's Song", "Possessed", "Computer Blue (hallway speech version)", "Love & Sex", "The Dance Electric", "Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden", "Wonderful Ass", "Velvet Kitty Cat", and "Electric Intercourse (studio version)". PrinceUltimate ... CD
Warner, 1980s/1990s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A refresher collection of prime Prince – the biggest hits from the Warner and Paisley Park eras – including the long versions of the some of the best 80s and early 90s cuts! The first disc is a straight up greatest hits collection, starting with "I Wanna Be Your Lover" from the self titled LP and ending with "My Name Is Prince from the "Love Symbol" album – and includes many of the biggest hits in between! Other tracks include "Uptown", "Controversy", "1999", "Delirious", "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain", "Sign O' The Times", "Gett Off", "Nothing Compares 2 U", and more. Disc 2 includes 11 remixes and/or alternate versions of other essential hits that do not appear on the first CD – including the longer original 12" versions, and similarly extended numbers – carrying everything great about the album versions, and giving you more! Tracks include "Let's Go Crazy (special dance mix)", "Little Red Corvette (dance remix)", "Pop Life (fresh dance mix)", "Rasperry Beret (12" version)", "U Got The Look (long look)", "Theives In The Temple (remix)" and "Cream (NPG mix)". 28 tracks on 2CDs! A real breakout set from the young Joshua Redman – the kind of record that made some mighty big ripples in the jazz world at the time – and which ended up in more record collections than we can count – and for good reason, too! The group's a rock-solid quartet – with Redman on tenor, Brad Mehldau on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Brian Blade on drums – and titles include "Sweet Sorrow", "Chill", "Rejoice", "Faith", "Alone In The Morning", "Mischief", "Dialogue", "The Oneness Of Two (In Three)", "Past In The Present", "Obsession", and "Headin' Home". RogerMany Facets Of Roger/Saga Continues/Unlimited (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), Mid 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A trio of albums from Roger – with bonus tracks too! On the first album, there's Many Facets Of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones in some secret So Cal laboratory! Whatever the case, though, the record's a classic in the Troutman/Zapp catalog – and features a sparkling west coast take on electro – offered up with lots of popping basslines, snapping electric kickdrums, and a truckfull of vocoder! There's also some pretty nice guitar in the mix – especially on the good jazzy groover "Chunk Of Sugar", which sounds like it's from a completely different record. Other tracks include "Maxx Axe", "Do It Roger", "So Ruff, So Tuff", and "Blue". The Saga Continues finds Roger still rocking his trademark effects laden vocals and vamping guitar work into the middle of the decade – with even tighter syncopated percussion, funky keys, and sharp synth bursts – sailing in a killer groove throughout! Roger produced the record along with Larry Troutman – and they bring in Maceo Parker for a horn solo and Ohio Player Billy Beck for keyboards as well! Tracks include a vocoder funk reading of Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour", plus "In The Mix", "Play Your Guitar Brother Roger", "The Break Song", "I Keep Trying", "Bucket Of Blood", "T C Song", and "Girl Cut It Out". Unlimited has Roger going for a sound that's maybe even more electro than some of his earlier solo work, at a level that really seems to be pushing the Zapp sound further for the 80s! The style is funky, but touched with lots of elements that have wended their way from indie hip hop up to mainstream soul – all at a level that later acts might fuse together with a bit more warmth, but which still has the starker feel of electro soul in Troutman's hands. Titles include "Thrill Seekers", "I Want To Be You Man", "I Really Want to Be You Man", "Night & Day", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". Bonus tracks include "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Bedisguitarist-A-Rown", and 7" mixes of "Heard It Through The Grapevine (part 1)", "Do It Roger", "In The Mix", "I Want To Be Your Man", and "Midnight Hour (part 1)". Zoot SimsNew Beat Bossa Nova Vol 1 ... CD
Colpix/Warner (Japan), 1962. Used ... $14.99
A great chapter in 60s bossa jazz – Zoot Sims "answer" to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – recorded in a similar jazz-meets-bossa style, with some great guitar work by Jim Hall! Zoot's solos are a bit tighter and not as laidback as Stan's – giving a more jazz-based sound to the work that makes for a nice change – and most of the tunes feature larger backings from Manny Albam and Al Cohn – never too over-arranged, but with enough of a full swinging sound to set things right. Hall's guitar works surprisingly well in the setting – and titles include "Barquinho De Papel", "Ciume", "Recado Bossa Nova (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cano Canoe". CD

Lou Stein8 For Kicks 4 For Laughs ... CD
Jubilee/Warner (Japan), 1954. Used ... $11.99
A unique little record – with some surprisingly nice touches! At some level, the record's got the feel of some of the east coast chamber jazz sets of the time – particularly those on Bethelehm and RCA – but at another level, there's a much more playful feel here, one that breaks down any genre conventions, especially in our expectations of the players. Stein's leading the group on piano, and working with a lineup that includes Billy Butterfield on trumpet, Peanuts Hucko on clarinet, Aaron Bell on bass, and Tony Mottola on guitar – turning in some really wonderful work that pushes the set in a number of different directions. You might expect a trad feel from the presence of Butterfield and Hucko, yet the album's got a playfully rhythmic groove that might be borrowed from trad, but which also has some great modern touches – made all the more so through Mottola's inventive work on guitar. Titles include "The Pendulum", "I Should Care", "Lou's Blues", "The Skull", and "When Your Lover Has Gone". CD

✨✧ StuffRight Stuff ... CD
Warner, Late 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic collection of work by Stuff – a crucially important group in their time! The ensemble was comprised of players who'd cut their teeth in jazz, fusion, and studio work during the early 70s – artists like Steve Gadd, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree, and Richard Tee – all of whom came together wonderfully on these sides, working as a group to craft some tunes that defied category, and virtually defined their own genre. A few tracks have vocals, but overall the approach is slick funky jazz – sometimes smooth and mellow, but at other times played with a rougher edge than you'd expect. The CD offers 15 tracks from the group's 5 albums for Warner Brothers – and titles include "My Sweetness", "Subway", "Happy Farms", "Foots", "This One's For You", "Do It Again", "Stuff It", and "Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours". Sire/Warner, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The most legendary post-New York Dolls solo work by Johnny Thunders! Thunders is of the great rock guitar stylists of his time, messy as he was – the messiness is big part of the charm – but the biggest surprise on this album is the disarmingly beautiful title tune. Includes some great, loud, sloppy cover tunes as well, and it's we've come to love it over the years just as much the as the Dolls ouvre! It's his first and greatest solo album, and other tracks include "Pipeline", "Great Big Kiss", "Ask Me No Questions", "Subway Train", "Downtown", "London Boys", "Daddy Rollin' Stone" and more. CD

Warner, 1982. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second essential LP from the Time that would solidify Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' position as a force to be dealt within commercial R&B for years to come, cut during the early 80s, when Minneapolis seemed like it was exploding at the seams with great music. With Morris Day's nice extended dance cut "The Walk" featuring a nice popping beat, plus the excellent and very Prince sounding slow jam "Gigolo's Get Lonely Too" and the percolating pre-New Jack funk of "777-9311". Tiny TimLive At Royal Albert Hall ... CD
Warner/Rhino Handmade, 1968. Used ... $34.99
A huge double-length live set of the groovy Tiny Tim at the height of his powers – and one that maybe offers up the fullest document of his surprisingly strong impact on the late 60s scene! The album's overflowing with tracks, all recorded by producer Richard Perry while Tim was strumming and singing at London's Royal Albert Hall – reworking old songs with a very strange vibe, leaving his imprint on some more contemporary numbers, and acting maybe more like an entertainer than you'd hear on record. Titles include "Save Your Sorrows For Tomorrow", "Welcome To My Dream", "Livin In The Sunlight Lovin In The Moonlight", "I Gave Her That", "Where Does Daddy Go When He Goes Out", "I Got You Babe", "Mr Tim Recalls His Visit With The Rolling Stones/I Can't Get No Satisfaction", "Nowhere Man", "I'll See You Again", and "The Other Side". ✨✧ Allen ToussaintLife, Love & Faith ... CD
Warner/Water, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – and a set that may well be his funkiest album ever! The set features 12 tracks from the early 70s – a time when Toussaint was mixing a bit of funk into the heavy soul mix that he'd had from his early days in the Crescent City scene – coming up with a blend that's even darker, and more powerful than all his famous production and projects of the 60s! And while some of Allen's later work tended towards cliche, this record captures him right at that perfect point when all of this was totally fresh – delivered with a razor-sharp edge, and with great instrumental help from New Orleans legends like Leo Nocentelli, Zig Modeliste, and George Porter Jr – all of whom make the album groove harder than most of the other soul albums on Warner at the time. Titles include "Soul Sister", "Victims Of The Darkness", "Am I Expecting Too Much", "Out Of The City", "Goin Down", "Electricity", "Fingers & Toes", and "On Your Way Down". CD

Television may be long gone, but Tom Verlaine has lost none of his edge – and instead has almost emerged as one of the most mature singer/songwriters on the New York scene – an underground-to-mainstream poet to match the skills of Lou Reed and Patti Smith! The album's got a vibe that's almost like Reed's work of the time – in that Tom's an artist who clearly knows the path to the dark side, and ways to overindulge – but always instead finds a way to keep things well-crafted and economical, but without sacrificing his sound or his intellect. ✨✧ Phil WoodsAlive & Well In Paris ... CD
Pathe/Warner (Japan), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record – easily one of Phil Woods' greatest! The album was cut during a time when Woods was living and working in France – and the great rhythm section backing him up features George Gruntz on piano, Henri Texier on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums, all grooving in an incredibly soulful way that opens up Woods' solos tremendously, without introducing any of the hoke and squonk that marred them a few years later. This set's got Woods at a perfect point – still with all the sharp-edged tone of earlier days, but exploring just a bit more freedom of expression, opening up on the album's long tracks in an incredibly creative way that really leaves us breathless. A gem – and the kind of record that will make you realize what a genius that Woods can be when he wants! Bernie WorrellFunk Of Ages ... CD
Gramavision/Warner (Japan), 1990. Used ... $19.99
Maybe not the funk of ages, but a mighty nice solo set from Bernie Worrell – done at a key stretch when he was working away from George Clinton and the P-Funk universe! The set's got Bernie opening up in a blend of jazz and funk – and some tracks feature lead vocals, in a style that takes off from his earlier solo album on Arista, but tuned here with a bit more of that electro vibe that the Gramavision album was doing so well at the time! Bernie handles much of the music himself, but there's plenty of key guests on the record too – rhythms from Sly & Robbie, more keyboards from Herbie Hancock, guitar from Keith Richards and Vernon Reid, and seven some backing vocals from David Byrne and other old associates from the P-Funk years. Booker T & Priscilla JonesChronicles (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1973. Used ... $11.99
Booker T's definitely into a great new groove here – one that really extrapolates his Memphis roots through the haze of early 70s California – coming up with some wonderful sounds along the way! There's a definite A&M vibe to the record – that mix of rootsy modes and hipster polish that A&M was really pioneering alongside the Warner camp – and most of the instrumentation here is pretty stripped-down and laid back – sometimes played all by Booker in overdubs, sometimes with added studio help. Organ lines figure strongly, but not always – and vocals are mostly duets between Booker and Priscilla – on titles that include "Rings Around The World", "When Two People Are In Love", "The Crippled Crow", "Time", "Wild Fox", "Fly", and "Mendocino". (Out of print, 2009 SHM-CD pressing – includes obi, replica inner sleeve, and numbered certificate with close up of the original labels!)

Miles DavisRubberband ... CD
Rhino, 1986. Used ... $11.99
Great lost work from Miles Davis – early material recorded for Warner Brothers in the mid 80s, and never released at the time – now finally uncovered from the vaults, and presented with a few slight contemporary touches! The core music is prime electric Miles funk all the way through – a great first step into the territory that he'd explore at Warner in his final years, but also with some traces of the Columbia records from the few years before – strong trumpet solos amidst bold rhythms – given new life here from instrumentalists Randy Hall and Attala Zane Giles. The music has been updated from the original tapes – with a richer sound, and a vibe that sounds less dated – and vocals have been added in a few spots, including great work from Ledisi and Lalah Hathaway. Titles include "Rubberband Of Life", "Echoes In Time/The Wrinkle", "See I See", "I Love What We Make Together", "So Emotional", "Paradise", "Maze", and "Give It Up". CD

✨✧ Invisible Man's BandReally Wanna See You (with bonus track) ... CD
Boardwalk/FTG, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great later effort from the 5 Stairsteps family – a later offshoot of the initial enterprise, still working here under the production helm of father Clarence Burke! Keni Burke's a member of the group, and the work here has a very similar groove to his own RCA material of the time – offset with some warmer elements that also echo the previous Stairsteps records on Warner, especially given that a number of the cuts have group vocals. Keni's bass does a nice job of kicking in the grooves, and the album's got a nicely warm sound for the time – almost more late 70s group funk than early 80s boogie. Titles include the sweet harmony track called "Along The Way" – plus "Party Time", "Circles", "Rated X", "Really Wanna See You", and "Same Thing". CD also features bonus track "Rated X (edited version)". CD

LabellePressure Cookin' ... CD
RCA/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $7.99
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the slightly less-formed modes of their Warner Brothers years – finding a really badass sort of territory that would serve them well for the rest of the 70s! The shift really pays off – as there's a number of good funky numbers on the album – and some righteous political lyricism in the mix, too – but also some mellower moments that really round things out nicely. The trio riff on a version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", as led into by the cut "Something In The Air" – and other numbers include "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", "Mr. Music Man", "Goin' On a Holiday", "Open Up Your Heart", "Let Me See You In The Light", and "Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood". Salsoul/Big Break (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy package of work from the legendary Skyy – the funky club combo headed by Randy Muller after his work with BT Express and Brass Construction! With Skyy, Muller honed his groove even more than before – creating a really tight focus on bass-heavy bottoms, and focusing all instruments in the group into a solidly soaring sound that showed that funk was alive and well on the dancefloor – even well beyond the disco years – as you'll hear in this collection of work that not only includes Salsoul Records classics by Skyy, but also later work for Capitol and Warner too. The 2CD set really runs the gamut of Skyy sounds – and links their disco material with some great later 80s grooves too – on titles that include "The Groove Is Bad", "First Time Around (12" mix)", "Call Me", "Let's Celebrate (12" mix)", "Real Love", "Up & Over", "Start Of A Romance", "Givin It To You (12" special mix)", "Bad Boy (12" version)", "When You Touch Me", "Get Into The Beat", "Movin Violation", "Let Love Shine (12" version)", "You Got Me Up", "Love Plane", "Skyyzoo (12" mix)", "Fallin In Love Again", "Disco Dancin", and "Superlove".
