The sublime first album from Randy Crawford – a set that's got a very strong jazzy vibe throughout – and which really shows the great place from which Randy started! There's a careful and classy mix of jazz, soul, and modern R&B throughout – never overdone, but often filled out with just the right sort of larger charts to match that incredible range of Crawford – that singing style that few other artists could match! A great little album cut by Randy during the height of her career! It's hard to find fault with Lamont Dozier – even on one of his lesser albums, like this one! Lamont's best quality has always been his way with a song – and he's working here with a good batch of original tunes that all have sharp hooks and some very catchy choruses, perfect for his sweetly soulful vocal style, which is handled just right on the album. There's a few throwaway numbers on here, but the best material is head and shoulders above that of most of Lamont's contemporaries – and it's always amazing to us that he never was a bigger hit act during the 70s. New Conversations is a record that follows strongly on the format of Bill's famous "Conversations" sessions for Verve in the 60s – and like those dates, it features the pianist playing alongside himself, thanks to the magic of overdubbing. But unlike those, this one also features a bit of electric piano too – picked up from the Left & Right years, and played alongside the acoustic piano in a shimmering sort of sound that's really great. The tones are tremendous – almost more open and fluid than in any Evans trio dates of the time – and the whole thing's got a ringing quality that's as much about sonic textures as it is about melody. Bill's working here with a sound as sensitive and picturesque as the cover image – never pushing things too hard, but letting each tune unfold organically in waves of sound few other players could conjure up! The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes.
