Terry BurrowsArt of Sound – A Visual History for Audiophiles ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2017. New Copy ... $34.99 50.00
A beautiful book of images – not just for record lovers, but for all fans of sonic delights – as the author starts from the earliest days of recorded sound, then moves up through decades of representation – following images of record players, radios, cassette tapes, albums, 78 record sleeves, and dozens of other variations on the way that sound and music is presented! The heavy volume is an artbook first, but also has plenty of history in the mix – and the author presents images from around the world, in a way that really gets away from the Anglo-centric evolution of the record industry – coming up with all sorts of weird images of record scenes in so many different locations, mixed with stark photographs, blueprints, and other images too. The book is a visual delight throughout – even in final pages that deal with the digital generation – and this heavy hardcover volume is 350 pages, with full color images throughout! Book

Bill DahlArt Of The Blues – A Visual Treasury Of Black Music's Golden Age (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2017. New Copy ... $29.99 35.00
Way more than just another book of album cover art – as this impressive volume presents countless images from the evolution of blues music in the 20th Century, alongside detailed writings that also try to explore visual trends, tropes of representation, and the larger role of the music in an American popular aesthetic! Chapters look at a range of different imagery – from early sheet music, to pre-war 78rpm labels, to blues photographs, record covers, and even film posters – but all laid out in a way that's extremely lively, given the great choice of images, and the book's glossy pages and hardcover presentation! 224 pages, with a look that's like the nicest coffee table books – but content that runs a lot deeper. ✨✧ Terry Burrows & Daniel MillerMute – A Visual Document ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mute Records was one of the most striking British labels of the post-punk years – second maybe only to Factory Records for the way it mixed art and design to package modern music – a legacy that began with the label's very first 45, and continued through countless great albums and singles for years to come! This beautiful volume is an especially strong look at the first decade or so of Mute – and showcases the way it found new styles to present its music – a rich legacy of sounds from Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Einsturzende Neubauten, and many others – a mode that continued even after Mute had found bigger fame in the mainstream, and started to issue some of its productions on major labels. The book traces hundreds of images, and even includes label scans, mock-ups, and other related work – along with a complete representation of the label's albums too. This hardcover edition is full color throughout, over 300 pages, and a great companion to the classic music of Mute! Book

✨✧ Edward ArtemievStalker/The Mirror – Music From Andre Tarkovsky's Motion Pictures (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Mirumir (Russia), 1975/1979. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 31.99
Sublime soundtrack music from Edward Artemiev – not a big name for film scoring on this side of the Iron Curtain, but a really well-remembered talent for his classic 70s work for the films of Andrey Tarkovsky! Side one of this album features wonderful sounds from the film Stalker – music that begins in a sweet electronic mode, but soon gets darker – a weird space that's somewhere between the German elements of Cluster and Tangerine Dream, and some of the more abstract electronics of the underground academic scene! Yet throughout it all, Artemiev has a very visual approach to his sounds – one that steps out nicely on the one track from the film The Mirror, and an extended tribute to the director too. Titles include "Exodus", "Dedication To Andrey Tarkovsky", "Meditation", "They Go Long", "Stalker", and "Train". LP, Vinyl record album

Jim DineThis Goofy Life Of Constant Mourning (hardcover) ... Book
Steidl (Germany), 2004. New Copy ... $15.99 50.00
A book that's a piece of art in an of itself – as it's the only way these different strands of creative activity from artist Jim Dine could have come together! The approach is unusual – the book is something of a poem, but created from words that Dine wrote on various surfaces in various places over the years, which are then photographed, and assembled into a large book without any other text at all! At an initial level, the book feels like someone selecting images of scrawlings on walls, but together the images rise up as a creation of their own – both verbal and visual – in a really lovely clothbound book that comes in a heavy slipcover that's a perfect package for the contents. The volume is huge – stuffed with over 1000 images, most in color – photos of album covers, street art, hip hop DJs and MCs, and countless other subjects – all presented in loose chronological order, alongside a history and evolution of the music, plus a timeline of key records and moments – all guided by some personal reflections by the author as well. WEB DuBoisBlack Lives 1900 – WEB Du Bois At The Paris Exposition ... Book
Redstone Press (UK), 2022. New Copy Book ... $24.99 35.00
A fantastic slice of work from WEB Dubois – materials showcased at the Paris Exposition of 1900, in a special exhibit in which Dubois tried to convey the reality of black life in America to a larger international audience! The materials include a number of handmade charts, graphs, and maps – all created by DuBois as an early sort of data analysis, with a very visual punch – images that instantly conveyed the black experience in America in the years after the Civil War – combined with a range of photographs that provided visual illustration of the contents. Much of DuBois' efforts were to showcase advancement and achievements – and the large 11" x 17" presentation of the softcover book allows the reproductions of these materials to really get the kind of prominence they had at the exposition. The book is the first-ever reproduction of all these items, along with the photographs – and features a new essay by historians Stephen G Hall and Jacqueline Francis. Book

Heliocentrics13 Degrees Of Reality ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. Used ... $5.99
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too. Jimi Hendrix, live in Los Angeles – just days before the release of his classic Are You Experienced album – a record that changed a generation! Jimi was actually working that night as the opening act for The Mamas & The Papas – and we're guessing that his searing solos and raw musical vision really blew the whole crowd away – so much so, we wish the set had a visual component, so we could see reaction shots of the crowd! The Experience group has the classic lineup of Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums – and titles include "Purple Haze", "Wild Thing", "Fire", "Catfish Blues", "Foxy Lady", and a reading of "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Beautiful images from the late 70s onwards – posters, advertisements, album covers, and lots of other visual creations used to help showcase the new sounds and styles of the punk and new wave generation! ✨✧ Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1970s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". Phase 4, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty compelling stuff from Brit arranger Ray Martin! Sound Of Sight – a record that's exactly what it's titled at – a very visual set of sounds, made up mostly from music, but also featuring some cool sound effects as well – all laid out over original tunes by Martin, which act almost like these mini-movies in sound! The scoring is quite dramatic, and most numbers go for much longer than usual for the average Phase 4 album – and the 1963 date of the record makes for a handful of groovy touches mixed in with the more traditional cinematic styles. A lost western score from Ennio Morricone – directed with some nice musical flourishes by the great Bruno Nicolai! The work's got the feel of some of Morricone's more famous spaghetti western scores – with some great moody passages that hint at the offbeat instrumentation of his horror work, coupled with more driving action-related tunes that have a more driving feel overall – and together, these tunes weave a very visual tapestry of sound – possibly even more compelling than the actual film! Osunlade's always had a sound that's deep, but this time around his entire approach seems even deeper than ever – maybe because this lavish package is as much a visual treat as it is an audio one! The set's as much of a book as it is a record – a heavy, hardcover package that has beautiful images on each page, writings too – all in tribute to the Orishas who've become a continuing inspiration for Osunlade – and helped move his music away from just simple dancefloor fare! And yet the tracks groove nicely, too – all in that deepest of house modes that the man's been giving us for many years – woven from strands of different cultural inspiration, and given a contemporary soulful spin – mostly from Osunlade himself on live drums, moog, Fender Rhodes, theremin, and other instrumentation – as well as vocals, and some guest help from Gabriele Poso, Oveous Maximus, Chateau Flight, and Tanya Blount. Trumpeter Jim Rotondi's in a classic pose on the cover – an image that shows just how much he brings to his music at a visual level, even though his sound seems so effortless and clear from an audio perspective! The set's filled with the kind of well-executed work on trumpet and flugelhorn that always makes Rotondi's records so great – especially in the past decade or so – music that's full of feeling, but which never seems forced or overstated – qualities that also come through in the rest of the group too, a lineup that features Rick Margitza on tenor, Danny Grissett on piano, Joshua Ginsburg on bass, and Vladimir Kostandinovic on drums. Rotondi's been recording for the Criss Cross label for years – but the record also really shows a great evolution and development from those early sides too – especially on original material that includes "Pete's 32", "Voice", "Leemo", "Father John", "Happy Feet", and "Jim's Blues". Wonderful sounds from the films of Jacques Tati – a set that overflows with the kind of warmly wistful tunes that really help define the images on the screen! Music is by Francis Lemarque, Francois Rauber, Charles Dumont, and others – and overall, the music is mostly in a small combo mode – with instrumentation that includes piano, vibes, guitar, and accordion – used in very whimsical ways throughout, with a quality that's almost as visual as the images on the screen – almost little cartoons in music, but with that warmer, more sentimental quality that made Tati's films so much more than slapstick. The collection runs much further in time than previous Tati collections – material from films that include Traffic, Play Time, Jour De Fete, Mon Oncle, Parade, and Les Vacances De Monseuir Hulot. A crazy idea for a book, but a great one too – and maybe the coolest so far from Jonny Trunk, the man who's given us lots of visual pleasure with his volumes on record store bags, candy bar wrappers, and automobile advertisements! This really beautiful book features four decades' worth of images used to promote stereos, turntables, and all things audio – tracing shifts in both style and technology, and advertising modes as well – all presented with an eye for the sensuous, as you might guess from the title! The ad selection is totally cool, and includes images from the US and UK, plus some key European audio companies too – all of whom are introduced with a bit of historical text that really helps you understand their contributions to the field. But even without that, this is still one hell of a book – like pulling all the best pages out of forty years of stereo magazines, and putting them together. The Face was a beautiful publication that combined art and criticism – all with a very left-leaning approach during the Thatcher years – and with an aesthetic that rose above the music weeklies like NME, taking things a bit deeper, while also setting a new standard for visual representation in the post-punk, post-disco generation. This huge book presents The Face in all its glory – with huge oversize full color pages that present some of its best covers and inside images – alongside the history of the publication, which is also a history of changing British culture from the late 70s through the early 90s. 352 pages, softcover, with full color images throughout! A surprisingly poignant score – especially when you consider that it was written for a film that was known for its graphic violence! Jerry Fielding's at his height here – drawing on his earlier work in jazz, yet weaving together colors and tones that work with really bold imagistic properties – almost visual in themselves, but in ways that are so different from the images on the screen – and which, on record, make the whole thing feel like it's almost an alternative movie in itself! The orchestrations are wonderful – hardly the usual western style, but not really crime, cop, or other 60s modes either. Titles include "Drinking Song", "Dirge & Finale", "Adventures On The High Road", "Main Title", and "Adelita". LP, Vinyl record album

Thames & Hudson, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rock and roll poster art from the late 50s onward – a lavish book that starts with early images of R&B revue posters, moves through the 60s underground through the big years of rock festivals and Fillmore shows – into the ever-evolving 70s landscape, right up through the revival of classic rock acts in the 80s! The author has a great eye for more stunning imagery that moves way past the obvious – the kind of special styles served up by key figures who helped shape visual representation of live music – presented here in a lineup that includes work from Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Hapshash, and others – figures who also helped move some of the aesthetics of the comix world into the service of music. There's lots more images along the way – plenty of surprises that go way past rock posters – and the softcover edition features over 700 images over the course of 224 oversized pages, most in full and striking color! Feral House, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing look at the secret art and language of gang culture in Chicago – the most detailed book we've ever seen to examine the words on the street during the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Chicago had a very special sort of language to communicate gang activity and culture during the heyday of the city's big gangs – graffiti that was filled with codes and symbols, and which really predated major street art in New York – plus a network of patches, business cards, and other objects that conveyed a special sort of numerology and message – sometimes harmless words about parties and events, sometimes essential details about the criminal underworld. This book is fascinating on so many different levels – not just a prurient true crime story, but instead a very detailed examination of gang culture in terms of linguistics, visual media, and representation. Yet all that detail doesn't make things too dry, either – as the book is overflowing with photos and images – examples of street graffiti, countless business cards, patches, portraits, and more – even some maps at the back. The whole thing is a massive 375 pages, full color throughout, and very beautifully done! Book

Numero, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful book, and one that's almost as enjoyable as finding a box of rare records from the funk and soul underground of the 60s and 70s! The book is a huge overview of funk and soul from Ohio – starting with the early 60s, and running up to the big years of Ohio funk that rose on the charts into the 80s – presented here with information on 1700 different artists, 500 record companies, and over 3000 different albums – many presented with label scans and other visual information too! Both the Numero Group and soul historian Dante Carfagna are no strangers to the Ohio scene – as they've both plumbed the depths in recent decades, and have given us no end of fantastic discoveries that we never would have heard otherwise – really wonderful material from Cinncinnatti, Cleveland, Columbus, and other cities – all music that makes up the rich array of scenes and talents presented in the book. There's a very visual presentation to the book – with over 125 pages alone of rare photos, posters, and other images from the scene – next to another huge chapter that features almost 80 more pages of rare record label scans and covers! Next to that, you'll find chapters that list different Ohio record labels, along with releases; Ohio pressing plants and recording studios; and even Ohio funk and soul artists who recorded for non-Ohio and national labels, and some who made no records at all! We love the presentation – as the huge book is very image and information-heavy, with no essays or other writing at all – beautifully done in a hardcover volume, with 350 pages – super-hefty, and a great gateway to continued digging for rare material from this surprising hotbed of funk and soul. And hopefully, we'll see books on the rest of the 49 states to follow in this format! Book

The book has chapters on key artists and labels – with hundreds of suggestions, both LP and 12" and 7" singles – and there's also a section that has suggestions by key collectors, and an especially great section on "hidden gems" – titles you might have overlooked otherwise. Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most incredible African collections we've ever heard – almost more amazing than the African Scream Contest set from the same label! The package focuses on work by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou – a group who really live up to their name, by bringing in a host of complicated rhythms to their music – including the "sato" groove, which is kind of a modern funky take on older voodoo modes! Production is often echoey – in ways that dub out the bass and drums nicely – and make the guitar parts sound nice and sinister – the vocals too, for that matter, even though we can't ever understand the lyrics. The music was originally recorded for a variety of different labels, but is brought together here beautifully – complete with a 44 page, full color booklet that not only tells the tale of the group, but also that of all the labels – then follows the whole thing up with a discography as well – a real labor of love that's as much of a visual treat as it is a sonic delight. Quite an unusual jazz session – one that features lead lines from Baby Laurence, who's a tap dancer and not a musician! Laurence's taps are as rhythmic as you might expect, but also carry a bit of a tune as well – enough melodic energy that they work surprisingly well without his dancing as visual accompaniment for the record! A surprisingly beautiful book on the famous 60s radical Jerry Rubin – one that's not only the first-ever look at the man's life, politics, and influence – but one that's also presented in a lavishly visual style that really conveys the crossroads of art and ideas of which Rubin was a key part! The book is even better than Pat Thomas' previous book, Listen Whitey – and has the same heavily visual feel as that one – as words from Rubin and his contemporaries are mixed with larger historical information, an incredible amount of cultural sidebars – and hundreds of fantastic images from the 60s onwards. Rubin's known as one of the founding fathers of the yippies – the Youth International Party, which gave political focus to the freedoms of hippies, and was a key part of the protests in Chicago in 1968. But the man's also had a much larger, even more colorful life – and this book really gets at all of that, and then some – one of those rare cases where you pick up a book on someone, and actually find yourself far more illuminated than before – both in terms of the subject, and their larger cultural role. 253 very vivid pages, hardcover, and done in the best Fantagraphics style. Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". ✨✧ Dr Seuss/Boris KarloffHow The Grinch Stole Christmas ... CD
Mercury, 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that's almost as wonderful as the cartoon on which it was based – thanks to Boris Karloff narration, words by Dr Seuss, and some mighty weird lyrics sung by Thurl Ravenscroft – all of which make the audio portion of this famous Holiday cartoon just as great as the visuals! This special record brings together all the best bits from the 30 minute Christmas short – including the song "You're A Mean One Mr Grinch", and "Welcome Christmas", "I Must Stop Christmas", "Trim Up The Tree", and "Tomorrow Is Christmas" – and also features the full story, too – with the same Boris Karloff narration from the cartoon! ✨✧ VariousDon't Think I've Forgotten – Cambodia's Lost Rock & Roll ... CD
Dust To Digital, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just the rock and roll promised in the title – as the music here is surprisingly heartfelt, surprisingly moving, and surprisingly effective – even if we don't know the language! There's definitely a rock style on most tunes, but the music is hardly the kind of knockoff psych or garage from the Vietnam era of Southeast Asia – and instead often has this really organic, well put-together quality that makes these tunes stand strongly on their own! The package is designed to accompany the film of the same name – about the lost history of Cambodian rock at the time – but there's such a great array of notes in the package, the whole CD set is more than visually stunning on its own – and packed with great cuts that include "Crazy Loving You" by Drakkar, "Dance A Go Go" by Sinn Sisamouth, "Don't Be Angry" by Ros Serey Sother, "Unique Child" by Huoy Meas, "The Story Of My Love" by Chhoun Malay, "BCK" by Baksey Cham Krong, "Console Me" by Sieng Fannthy, and "Cyclo" by Yol Aularong.
