Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Suite & Other Favorites ... CD
Bluebird, 1968. Used ... $6.99
Rare recordings by one of the grooviest piano players ever – the fab Vince Guaraldi, known for his famous work on the Charlie Brown cartoons of the 60s! This set features Peanuts-related material done by Vince on a number of different sessions – the core of which took place in 1968, and features "The Charlie Brown Suite", a set of tracks that feature Vince's trio performing with some added orchestral backings. The mood of these tunes is varied, as some have the core small combo sound of the cartoons – while others expand the themes a bit more with added orchestrations, taking the tunes into emotions and tonal ranges we wouldn't have expected – and which make us like Vince even more! Added to these "suite" tunes are a few solo piano ones, and a great live recording with Eddie Duran on guitar! Titles include "Linus & Lucy With The Band", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Happiness Is", "Peppermint Patty", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Rain Rain Go Away", "Red Baron", and "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". CD

Vince GuaraldiComplete Warner Brothers/Seven Arts Recordings (Oh Good Grief/Eclectic/Alma-Ville/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Omnivore, 1968/1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99 25.98
A trio of wonderful records – plus rare bonus tracks too! First up is the classic Oh Good Grief – one of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi nicely expands Vince's sound of earlier years – by taking his lyrical piano groove and adding in a bit of electric harpsichord – plus slightly larger arrangements that feature a bit of electric bass, guitar, and just the right light touches of strings. The resulting sound is wonderful – as deeply reflective as some of Vince's better-known work, but with some cool late 60s touches that really give the album a fresh kind of feel. And heck, Vince even sings on 2 Tim Hardin tracks – "Black Sheep Boy" and "Reason To Believe" – using a great raspy style of vocals that we didn't even know he had! Other titles include a great electric version of "The Beat Goes On", plus cool originals "Nobody Else", "Coffee and Doe-Nuts", and "Lucifer's Lady". Alma-Ville was cut during Vince's late 60s hipster phase – and it combines work on piano with a bit of electric playing, plus hip LA arrangements that include drums by Dom Um Romao, guitar by Herb Ellis, and added percussion by Rubens Bassini. Tracks are mostly originals – short groovers and sing-song numbers, a lot cooler than some of Vince's earlier work – all dancing along in a sweetly breezy groove that makes for a heck of a delightful little album! Titles include "Rio From The Air", "Cristo Redentor", "Uno Y Uno", "Detained In San Ysidro", "Jambos", "Alma Ville", and "The Masked Marvel". 2CD set features 4 bonus tracks – "Oh Happy Day", "The Sharecropper's Daughter", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose (take 15)", and 'The BEat Goes On (alt take 14)". ✨✧ Vince Guaraldi & Bola SeteLive At El Matador ... LP
Fantasy, 1966. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A hip little live date from the team of Vince Guaraldi and Bola Sete – one that's a bit heavier on Vince's piano than Bola's guitar – but in a way that's a-OK with us! There's a sweetly gliding sensibility to the whole set – that warm lyricism and subtle soul that Guaraldi always brought to his own 60s gems for Fantasy Records – a style made most famous by his work on the Peanuts cartoons at the time, but which comes off with an even deeper vibe here. There's a bit of rhythm backing behind the players – although that's also somewhat gentle too – and titles include long versions of "Favela" and "More", plus the "Black Orpheus Suite" – and the tracks "El Matador", "I'm A Loser", and "People". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with deep groove. NOTE – Vinyl has a small edge chip well out of the play area. Cover has bumped corners and a small indent at the opening.)

Fantasy/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". Vince Guaraldi's wonderful music for the first-ever cartoon to feature the Peanuts characters in animated form – a sublime batch of jazz instrumentals that forever changed the face of music in shows of this nature! Core sounds are from the trio of Guaraldi on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Colin Bailey on drums – and titles include key early versions of the "Charlie Brown Theme" and "Linus & Lucy" – plus "Oh Good Grief", Pebble Beach", "Schroeder", and "Blue Charlie Brown". An amazing record – one with a depth that goes way beyond its simple roots, and which has gone on to become one of the true Christmas classics of the 20th Century! Although a Christmas soundtrack, the album's more of a tapestry of sadness, longing, and loss – the best qualities that always emerge in true Christmas classics – underscoring the blue side of the season that's always lurking around corners from the happier moments. Vince Guaraldi penned this score back when he was a rising talent on the San Francisco scene – and in a way, it was almost his musical contribution to the cartoon that made it such a lasting favorite – even over and above the appeal of the famous animated characters. Most tunes are simple piano ones, but played with a phrasing that's beautifully timeless – and the few vocal numbers feature voices from the cartoon, singing softly with the music. Titles include the classic "Linus and Lucy" – plus "My Little Drum", "Christmas Is Coming", "Christmas Time Is Here", "Skating", and "Fur Elise". CD

Also includes the bonus CD Peanuts Portraits – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". Fantasy, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts isn't just for Christmas – although Vince racked up plenty of fame over the years for his Christmas-themed tunes – and this collection's a great reminder that the Guaraldi genius graced a whole host of different Charlie Brown cartoons in the 60s and 70s – all with results that are completely sublime! The music here is from a host of different small combos, used in a number of different Holiday-themed cartoons over the years – and Vince plays piano with accompaniment that shifts from track to track, and includes a bit of trumpet from Tom Harrell, guitar from Eddie Duran, and timbales from Benny Velarde. The album may well be worth it alone for the classic "Joe Cool" – a tune that may well be our favorite from the Peanuts cartoons – and but the set includes lots of other greatness, with titles that include "Linus & Lucy", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Schroeder", "Charlie's Blues", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Surfin Snoopy", "Heartburn Waltz", and "Track Meet". Drummer Jerry Granelli takes on two of our favorite piano talents of the 60s – working here with a great trio that features Jamie Saft on the acoustic keys and Bradley Christopher Jones on bass – all three working together on nicely different takes on the material! If you know both Mose and Vince, you'll know the sorts of material that you'll find within – lyrical and groovy Guaraldi tunes, and soul-drenched Allison numbers – but the approach of the combo is nicely different, and Saft does an especially nice job of making the tracks swing while also bringing plenty of his unique flavorings into play – maybe given a bit more of a groove than we might have expected, thanks to very strong work from Jones on bass. Titles include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Star Song", "Young Man Blues", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Parchman Farm", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", and "Christmas Time Is Here". An incredible record – and the kind of rare LA bop session that got totally lost because it was never packaged properly! This obscure set was issued by the Crown label under a number of names – both the Conte Candoli All Stars and Vince Guaraldi – and the group includes Conte Candoli, Buddy Collette, Vince Guaraldi, Leroy Vinnegar, and Stan Levey – all playing with a fantastically tight and incredibly soulful bop groove, of the sort you always hear them credited for, but which you can never find on any of their snoozy more famous records. Vince Guaraldi plays some incredibly soulful piano, in a manner that's very different than his Fantasy recordings – and he's playing here with a killer group of LA players who deliver some of their finest recorded work! Trust us, the session's a gem – and it's one of those you can put on and surprise your friends, and yourself! Tracks include "Muggin The Minor", "Mambo Diane", "Macedonia", and "Little David". CD

Sweet funky jazz from pianist Gene Russell – one of the hippest albums he ever recorded! Russell's a pianist with a wonderfully fluid touch – used here to near perfection in a small combo date that really stands out from most of his other albums – just the kind of effort we'd have to expect at the time, given that Gene was the head of the Black Jazz label! The sound is acoustic, but has a definite sense of electricity to Russell's phrasing on the piano – a bit like work from Vince Guaraldi from the time, when he was shifting between acoustic and electric – as if the latter instrument held on and helped shape the acoustic sound. The rest of the group features Henry Franklin on bass, Steve Glover on drums, and Tony William on congas – and the groove is kind of a soulful extrapolation of a core piano trio vibe – 60s soul jazz taken to hipper 70s territory. Titles include a great cover of "Listen Here", plus "Black Orchid", "Hitting the Jug", "Making Bread", and a version of "Silver's Serenade". CD

One of the most beautiful albums we've ever heard from pianist Eri Yamamoto – in large part because of the presence of the Choral Cameleon vocal group! The mix of piano and voice is wonderful – haunting and powerful, in a way that reminds us of some of the best Vince Guaraldi experiments of this type – but with a sharper edge, as you might guess from the piano of Yamamoto – and support from David Ambrosio on bass and Ikuo Takeuchi on drums! Sometimes the voices rise high and proud – as in a Max Roach jazz-with-voices album – other times they drift dreamily, providing more of a subtle ascendant current to the lines of the piano. Either way is great to our ears – a really wonderful record – and tracks feature the long "Goshu Ondo Suite", plus "Echo Of Echo". CD

Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. One of Cal Tjader's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Willie Boby on drums, and Mongo Santamaria on congas – all musicians who'd previously helped Tjader hit some of his best Latin grooves! But the addition of Silva on a few tracks here really makes the set crackle – giving it a gutsy, soulful fee that you don't always get on some of Tjader's other records. Tracks are longish – and titles include the nice original "Bill B", plus jazzy versions of "I Love Paris", "Blue & Sentimental", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album

Other players include Simon Allen on tenor, Andrew Cleyndert on bass, and Clark Tracey on drums – and titles include "Prothero's Dilemma", "Wagging The Bag", "Easy For Leonardo", "Jinks", and "Pudding & Mince" – most bracketed by some narrated passages from the book. Atomicat, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's Christmas once again – but thanks to this groovy little set, you'll be celebrating with music that's a nice change from previous years! The package does a great job of pulling together rare 50s cuts in a variety of styles – country, R&B, instrumental, and early rock and roll – a blend that works wonderfully as the set steps from one unusual tune to the next – making for a great change from the Frank Sinatra and Vince Guaraldi albums that usually get big play during the 12th month of the year! The set's got 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Snow Man Rock" by Big Bud, "Frosty The Snowman" by Porter Wagoner, "Who Said There Ain't No Santa Claus" by Ron Holden, "Christmas Dinner" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Joy To The World" by The Louvin Brothers, "Swingin Christmas" by Earl Grant, "We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo" by Big John Greer, "Sleigh Bell Rock" by Chuck Blevins, "Santa's Helper" by Joe Poovey, "Jingle Bells" by Chet Atkins, "I'm Gonna Tell Santa Claus On You" by Faron Young, and "Mister Santa" by Dorothy Collins.
