Martin DennyExotica (Japanese paper sleeve edition – mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Liberty (Japan), 1957. Used ... $18.99
The birth of a sound and the birth of a legend – Martin Denny's first album in the Exotica series, and a record so great it named an entire genre! Denny certainly didn't invent the tropical style of easy listening that came to be known as "exotica" in the 50s – but with a record like this, he delivered the goods better than anyone else – by taking away all the too-sweet styles of Hawaiian music, and serving up a stripped-down, jazzy kind of sound! The album features Denny's classic original quartet – with Arthur Lyman on vibes and Augie Colon on bongos – and titles include "Stone God", "Jungle Flower", "Busy Port", "Lotus Land", and his hit recording of "Quiet Village". Japanese CD features full mono and stereo mixes of all tracks on the set! CD
(2003 Japanese pressing with Mono & Stereo version of the record – insert has a few age spots, includes obi.)

Martin DennyQuiet Village ... LP
Liberty/Jackpot, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 23.99
An undisputed classic in the exotica genre – and the record that yielded Martin Denny his biggest hit! The title track "Quiet Village" was originally written by Les Baxter, but it was Martin Denny's approach that really managed to send the tune over the top – using spare percussion, rhythmic piano, and just the right amount of vibes and bird calls to give the track a really haunting feel. That approach is echoed throughout the set – with shifting instrumentation that includes celeste, bongos, marimbas, and marimbula as well! Titles include "Quiet Village", "Paradise Found", "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Martin DennyQuiet Village/Enchanted Sea ... CD
Liberty/Scamp, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 exotica classics on one CD! Quiet Village is an undisputed classic in the exotica field, and the record that yielded Denny his biggest hit – the title reworking of "Quiet Village", written by Les Baxter a few years earlier. The rest of the record's pretty darn nice, too – with Denny's trademark piano/percussion style firmly in place – and we can't think of a better way to start off a collection of exotic 50s tunes. Titles include "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song". Enchanted Sea is another great classic by Denny – with a nice approach that has sort of a drifting South Seas feel! The record is one of his last good ones for Liberty, and has lots of nice tracks like "My Isle Of Golden Dreams", "Beyond The Reef", "Flotsam & Jetsam", and "Cross Current". Nice sexy cover, too! CD

Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's a pretty enticing title, and the record's got a pretty enticing sound as well – fantastic long-spun lines from the trio of Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Whit Dickey on drums – all players with a long history together, and a perfectly-matched sound on the record! Shipp is at his most spiritual here – really reveling in that new sense of warmth that's graced his more recent material – a quality that Parker is only happy to support and emphasize, while Dickey proves once again that he can be an incredibly versatile talent on the drum kit – sometimes almost feeling like a different player on each different track on the record. Titles include "Down Void Way", "Nothing & A Thing", "Whirling In The Void", "Village Mothership", and "Nothingness". CD

✨✧ DweleSubject ... CD
Virgin, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sparkling debut from Detroit's Dwele – a sweet vocalist in the Donny Hathaway tradition, but with a tight, beat heavy soul sound that glides between 70s soul jazz, mellowed-out Jay Dee synth hop groove, and the natural soul vibe ?uestlove brings to his productions! We first caught wind of Dwele on Slum Village's "Tainted" single, and that's a good indication of the sound you'll find on the debut. Mellow, trippy keys and sound washes drench the album from beginning-to-end, with Dwele's often deeply layered vocals weighing the bright, modern groove aspects of the sound with a rich sense of soul history. There's a slight 70s soul jazz vibe, too, in spots – a sophisticated studio groove with bright bass and some sunny, soulfully strummed electric guitar. Dwele finds some truly nice middle ground between the natural soul scene, modern groove, and the mellower beats and grooves of the best Detroit hip hop of recent years – a scene that Dwele indeed was a player in before finding his soul muse. Great stuff – similar enough to some of his contemporaries – but still wholly unique in Dwele's embrace of a bright, sunny, polished sound that still manages to maintain naturally soulful grit and grease! The title track is a classic – crackly, thumping beats, sweetly chiming keys, and capital M Moody vocals – and many others are nearly as strong! Includes "Truth", "Find A Way", "Day At A Time", "Subject", "Sho Ya Right", "Possible", "Money Don't Mean A Thing", the bonus track "Let Your Hair Down", and more. 15 in all on the CD. CD

✨✧ Bob DylanBob Dylan ... CD
Columbia, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sure, the young Bob Dylan might look a bit hokey on the cover – but he's already out there way ahead of the pack – and starting to blow away any of the less interesting pop folkies who'd been crowding into the Greenwich Village scene of the early 60s! There's a difference here right from the start – not just some of his own material, but the way that Dylan transforms older tunes too – not with this crew-cutted, clean-voiced style – but bringing in elements of blues, and using these very personal guitar inflections and harmonica lines to really make the music his own. Titles include "Highway 51", "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean", "Song To Woody", "Man Of Constant Sorrow", "Fixin To Die", "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down", and "Talkin New York". CD

✨✧ El CocoLet's Get It Together ... LP
AVI, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very groovy early work by El Coco – a cool mix of electric keyboards and fusiony touches, in a style that made the group a real standout on the dancefloor! At some level, the album almost operates like a jazz set – thanks to the strong keyboards of Michael Lewis and the percussion of Laurin Rinder – but there's also a smoother groove going on, and a definite shot at the clubs that stands out on some of the album's catchier tunes. The keyboards are in a very cool "spaced out" mode, and a few cuts even hit some great 70s exotica moments too. Includes remakes of "Mr Lucky" and "Quiet Village" – which should show some of the influences of the team – plus the tracks "Let's Get It Together", "Fai Le Chat", "Gimme Some", and "Put On Your Jeans". Nublu, 2022. New Copy ... $23.99
One of the trippiest records we've ever heard from Ilhan Erashin – very different than some of the groove-oriented work he gave us years before, and a rich array of sounds we never would have expected! The album's a trio effort – Erashin on saxes and electric piano, Dave Harrington on guitar, organ, moog, melotron, electronics, and percussion – and Kenny Wollesen on drums, percussion, and vibes – the last of whom might be a good reference point here, as the set's got some of the more open qualities of work that Kenny has done for Tzadik, but with a warmer, more organic layering of elements that really makes the best of the multi-instrumental talents of all the artists involved. Titles include "The Long Goodbye", "Dusty Village", "Invite Your Eye", "And It Happens Everyday", "Wreck The Study", "Even As You Smile", and "What All The Books Say". LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 12CDs ... $59.99
The complete Riverside recordings! Complete! That's 12 CDs worth of Bill Evans, documenting some of the finest performances he ever recorded. As you'd expect, there's quite a lot of trio sides presented here, including the great group featuring Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, but there's also a few early excursions into the solo setting he'd return to again and again as well as a few sessions featuring horns. The list of sidemen is filled with heavies from Paul Chambers, Teddy Kotick, Philly Joe Jones and Cannonball Adderley to Freddie Hubbard, Jim Hall, Zoot Sims and Ron Carter. If you know any of the Riverside recordings, you know this is where Evans established himself as one of the leading pianists of his age, and laid the blueprint for a much imitated style. This set features the entirety of loads of great LPs, like New Jazz Conceptions, Everybody Digs Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby, Portrait In Jazz, Sunday At The Village Vanguard and more! CD

One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. The session was caught live at the Village Vanguard on the night of June 25, 1961 – and titles include longish takes on "Solar", "Jade Visions", "Gloria's Step", and "Alice In Wonderland". CD

Brilliant late work from Bill Evans – his last set of recordings from the Village Vanguard – recorded in the summer of 1980, nearly two decades after his first famous albums at the club! Evans here is a wealth of imagination – really stretching out in relaxed, fluid formation – gentler than before, but also with a deeper sense of feeling too – and getting some great support from trio members Marc Johnson on bass and Joe Labarbera on drums. Tracks mostly hover around the five minute range – but there's some key longer numbers too – and the whole thing's a perfect example of why live Bill Evans is often some of the best Bill Evans you can find! 58 tracks on 6CDs, packaged with a booklet – and titles include "Nardis", "Knight For Mary F", "Emily", "Minha", "My Romance/Five", "But Not For Me", "Bill's Hit Tune", "I Do It For Your Love", "Quiet Now", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Your Story", "Tiffany", and "Re Person I Knew". Four SeasonsGenuine Imitation Life Gazette (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Philips/Rhino, New Copy (reissue)... On April 20, 2024
A wild little concept album from the Four Seasons – one that's packaged in newspaper-style cover, and which presents tunes that almost have that late 60s British "snapshots of life" approach to pop – particularly that put forth by The Kinks on Village Green Preservation Society. The album's a true genius effort from Bob Gaudio – now risen to the ranks of producer for the group, and also the key songwriter for the album too – working here in tandem with the great Jake Holmes, a wonderful choice for a record like this! Arrangements are inventive, playful, and definitely at a level that shows some influence from Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers – but there's also a focused, all-pop approach to the tunes too – one that's hook-heavy even when trippy, and which shows that the Four Seasons were as great at psychedelic and Sunshine Pop as any of the groups they'd inspired over the years. Titles include "Saturday's Father", "Wall Street Village Day", "Wonder What You'll Be", "Soul Of A Woman", "Something's On Her Mind", "American Crucifixion Resurrection", and "Mrs Stately's Garden". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 21. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, April 20. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on April 21 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieLive At The Village Vanguard (aka Jazz For A Sunday Afternoon) ... LP
Solid State, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An amazing jam session set – of the sort that was rarely issued in the 60s, and hardly ever on labels like Solid State Records! The album features a small group of all-star players recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1967 – all blowing on long, unstructured tunes that offer amazing solo space, and the kind of spontaneity that's rarely captured so well in a live jazz setting. Players include Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Chick Corea on piano, Ray Nance on violin, Richard Davis on bass, and either Elvin Jones or Mel Lewis on bass – and the unusual mix of players really comes together beautifully for the record, in a rare spirit that recalls the best of the Norman Granz JATP sessions, but with a hipper sort of 60s feel. 3 numbers in all: "Dizzy's Blues", "Blues For Max", and "Tour De Force" – all presented in very long versions. The second disc in this series that captures the fire and spontaneity of the famous late 60s Sunday afternoon sessions at the Village Vanguard – recorded when that club was an important site for criss-crossing of styles and traditions, as you'll hear wonderfully in this set! The album features a sextet that includes Pepper Adams, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Richard Davis, Mel Lewis, and Garnet Brown – playing in an easy, open format that has them really stretching out on 3 long tracks. The focus here is on the solo work of the players, but there's also a surprisingly great sense of cohesiveness and lyrical interplay as well. Vocalion/Monkey Dog (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from saxophonist Paul Gonsalves – one of his rare UK sessions from the 60s, all of which show that he had a fantastic sound that went way beyond his more famous work with Duke Ellington! The style here is tight, hip, and very grooving – work by a quartet that features Gonsalves on tenor, plus Pat Smythe on piano, Kenny Napper on bass, and Ronnie Stevenson on drums – all hitting a soulful hardbop style that's very much like the best Tubby Hayes records from the time! Gonsalves' tone is incredible – with that raspy, almost flatted mode that he used with Ellington – and it really stretches out here with plenty of room for creativity, in a way that makes us wonder why nobody ever got this one issued over on our side of the Atlantic. A wonderful live set from the legendary Great Jazz Trio of Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Hank Jones – one of the group's key Japanese albums of the 70s! As the title implies, the set was recorded live at the Village Vanguard – in a setting that has the trio stretching out even more than on their already-spacious studio sides of the time. Williams is especially nice on the record – light and free on the kit, and miles away from some of his fusion work of the 70s. Jones' tones are warm and soulful, and Carter's bass work is always a treat in a setting like this. This set's the third that the trio recorded at the Vanguard – and it's very much in the best spirit of its predecessors – gently soulful, with a strong focus on the individual talents of the players, yet nary a moment of overindulgence. Gypsy Lane were produced here by Jacques Morali, of Village People fame – but don't hold that against them, as the set's got a deeper vibe than you might expect! The group seem pretty tight on their own already – and work more as a tight ensemble funk group than the kind of disco studio creations Morali was more tied to – grooving at a level that seems informed by the best mid 70s advances of Earth Wind & Fire, which includes some warmer moments next to the uptempo cuts. Lead vocals are by Alfonso Carey, but other members of the group often harmonize alongside – and titles include "Show Me How To Groove", "We'll Have Love", "Hey Sister", and "I Could Use Some Loving". Verve, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Something wonderful happened to Coleman Hawkins at the end of his career – record companies started letting him record in really long formats, stretching out creatively on extended solos that continued to push the boundaries of his talents! This set is a prime example of that shift – as it features Hawkins alongside Roy Eldridge and Johnny Hodges – all working with trio backing by Tommy Flanagan, Major Holley, and Eddie Locke in a live setting at the Village Gate. Tracks are all well over ten minutes long – 2 at eleven minutes, and 1 at sixteen – and they allow the three lead soloists to really stretch out in a warmly improvisatory manner that surpasses even the easygoing Verve studio sessions of the 50s. Titles include "Satin Doll", "Perdido", and "The Rabbit In Jazz". Plus, added to these 3 are 4 more bonus tracks from the Hawkins Alive album – recorded at the same time, but without the other 2 soloists. These titles include "It's The Talk Of The Town", "Mack The Knife", "Caravan", and "Bean & The Boys". CD

Appalachian music great Roscoe Holcomb is best known for his Folkways recordings of the early 60s – but he sounds equally wonderful here in a rare performance recorded at a church in Portland in 1972! There's a stark, moody feel to the music – summed up perfectly in the photo on the cover, and billed by Folkways as the "high lonesome sound" – as Roscoe plays these hypnotic lines on banjo that are often filled with these cyclical passages that weave a dark musical tapestry, while his vocals reach for redemption with these qualities that are completely haunting. Village Thing/Lion, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A really beautiful set that was issued on a sub-label of UK folk powerhouse Transatlantic – yet a set that's nicely different than some of the better-known work from that label! Ian Hunt and John Thomas both play acoustic guitars, and add in a bit of bass and light percussion – in a stripped-down style that has all the elements of folk, but sounds nothing like it – as there's a much cooler post-60s vibe – not really singer/songwriter, but this sense of intimacy and adult approaches to the music that's very special – maybe a bit like the team of Lambert & Nuttycombe, yet very much in the group's own spirit. The duo really transform the material they touch – as evidenced on their great version of "Living Without You" – heard here next to titles that include "Hold Me Know", "Silver Lady", "We Say We're Happy", "Mr Bojangles", "Older Now & Younger Then", "Morning For Eve", and "Rockfield Rag". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985/1988/1989. New Copy 3CDs ... $18.99 23.99
A trio of later gems from this legendary South African pianist! Mindif is a great set that features Abdullah Ibrahim's soundtrack music for the 1988 Clair Denis film Chocolat – some of his best group recordings of the 80s! The feel here is a bit more African-styled than usual – even for Ibrahim – with strong use of reeds to inflect the tunes with the right degree of color and tone for their use in the film. The ensemble on the record features Ricky Ford on tenor and soprano, Craig Handy on flute and tenor, Benny Powell on trombone, David Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the tracks have a languid groove that recalls some of Dollar Brand's best South African recordings with Kippie Moketsie. Titles include "Earth Bird", "African Market", "Pule", "Star Dance", and "Serenity". African River is one of the great larger group recordings that pianist Abdullah Ibrahim gave us in the 80s – from a moment when he was able to use added horns to really expand that amazing sense of color and rhythm he'd brought to his music on earlier trio recordings! There's a sense of musical vision here that really lives up to Abdullah's majestic look on the cover – a fantastic merging of flute and tenor from John Stubblefield, soprano and alto from Horace Alexander Young, tuba and baritone from Howard Johnson, and trombone from Robin Eubanks – all vibrant horn players who seem to have just about every tone and mood covered with their horns – given this wonderfully warm support from Buster Williams on bass, and Brian Adams on drums. All titles are originals by the leader – and tunes include "Chisa", "Sweet Samba", "Duke 88", "The Wedding", and "Joan Capetown Flower". Yarona is a beautifully sensitive set from Abdullah Ibrahim – recorded live at the Village Vanguard, and with an open, lyrical sound that almost seems to recall some of Bill Evans' magical moments in the venue! Ibrahim's quite a different player, of course – but there's an open, exploratory quality to his music that's a bit unusual here – maybe not as rhythmically based as it is balanced between sound and silence – given very respectful company in the bass of Marcus McLaurine and drums of George Johnson. Titles include "Cherry/Mannenberg", "Duke 88", "African River", "Stardance", "Tuang Guru", "Tintinyana", and "African Marketplace". CD

A set that's nicely different than the "best of" you might expect – as the record features all new material – both songs that appear here for the first time, and new recordings of older gems – which all come together with the laidback, easygoing vibe that makes Gregory Isaacs one of the most soulful singers on the Jamaican scene at the time! And yes, the man certainly saw plenty of international fame over the years – but we love him best in these more homegrown modes – working with producer Alvin Ranglin, on slow-stepping grooves that let that magical voice really slide in and find its groove. Titles include "A Riot", "Once Ago", "Jailer", "No Footstool", "Village Of The Under Privilege", "Payroll", "Border", and "Tumbling Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter IsaacsonPeter Isaacson Sings The Songs Of (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Altair/Americana Anthropology, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record issued in the 70s, but one that documents the legacy of 60s folk in which Peter Isaacson was a part – working as a singer and guitarist in the Village scene at the time, where he honed his skills on songs by Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, and other contemporaries! The album was recorded back home in Kansas, after Isaacson had given up on New York – and that kind of gives it a "60s hangover" sort of vibe – as Peter makes his way through a host of familiar tunes, but with surprisingly dark currents that come across in ways that are very different than the originals – even though the readings just feature acoustic guitar and vocals. The set's a lost gem from the very underground years of American indie labels – and titles include "Long Way Back Home", "Affair On 8th Avenue", "I Shall Be Released", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "I Threw It All Away", "Lalena", and "Both Sides Now". ✨✧ Ethan IversonCommon Practice ... CD
ECM, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the darkest sounds we've heard from trumpeter Tom Harrell in years – really fitting the spirit of this quartet led by pianist Ethan Iverson, as they slowly step their way through a mix of standards and original tunes in a live set recorded at the Village Vanguard! Tom's developed a fantastic range over the years – and here, he finds this really special sonic space to resonate with Iverson's choices on the piano – still very much his own man, especially on the solos, but also a key cornerstone in a group that also features Ben Street on bass and Eric McPherson on drums. The approach is maybe most striking on the mellowest numbers, which really resonate with shadowy depths – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "I Can't Get Started", "The Man I Love", "Philadelphia Creamer", and "Jed From Teaneck". Uncut, full version Jay Love Japan – one of the best of the early posthumous Dilla releases – originally slated exclusively for the Japanese market! This is Dilla in a mostly uptempo vibe, with soulful strings and vocal samples and blunt, snapping beats. Includes a short intro, "Yesterday", "Say It" feat Ta'Raach and scratches by Exile, "Oh Oh", "First Time" feat Baatin and scratches by Tha Ruckazoid, "In The Streets", "Feel The Beats", "Believe In God", "Can't You See" and "Say It". 2016 CD version includes 11 tracks in all! Milt JacksonMilt Jackson Live At The Village Gate ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1963. Used ... $9.99
A great little set from that time when Milt Jackson was fronting a group that also included Jimmy Heath on tenor – a wonderful pairing of talents that made for some of Milt's most soulful sides of the 60s! Heath's sharp-edged tone is a great contrast to Jackson's smoother touch on the vibes – and the pair are supported here by rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all great players who bring plenty of personal inflection to their work on this live date. Titles include a great version of Heath's "Gemini" – plus Jackson's "Bags Of Blue", "Gerri's Blues", and "Ignunut Oil" – plus takes on "Little Girl Blue" and "Time After Time". CD

Joseph Jarman/Don MoyeEarth Passage Density ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
One of the excellent non-Art Ensemble sessions cut by the team of saxophonist Joseph Jarman and percussionist Don Moye – work that draws on their experience in the groundbreaking Chicago group, but also takes them into rich new territory on their own! The group's a quartet – with trombone and flute by Craig Harris, and bass and reeds by Rafael Garrett – and the tracks long, and slow-building – as concerned with sound overall as they are with improvisation, in a style that reminds us of some of the best mellower early 70s moments of the Art Ensemble, but with loft jazz touches too. Jarman plays a very large range of reed instruments, and Moye matches with lots of varied percussion – and titles include "Sunspots", "Jawara", "Happiness Is", and "Zulu Village". Island/Universal (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Miles Jaye once played the cop in the Village People, but don't hold that against him – because by the time of this debut set, he'd really crafted his style as a soul singer – which makes the record a key part of a new trend in male soul for the late 80s! Jaye's got a cool, sophisticated style – one that gets some nice warm touches on the arrangement and production, which include lots of touches from Miles himself – plus help from luminaries like Dexter Wansel, Hubert Eaves, and Branford Marsalis. Titles include "Lazy Love", "Special Thing", "I've Been A Fool For You", "Desiree", "Happy 2 Have U", "Come Home", "I Cry For You", and "Let's Start Love Over". CD

✨✧ Jazz CommunityJazz Community Revisitied ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The jazz community here is pretty small – just a sextet, but one that had a huge impact on the Swiss jazz scene at the time! The group have a vibe that's maybe a bit earlier than the date of the material here – maybe more like some of the early 70s expressions from the American, German, and British jazz worlds – with lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and solos that are strong and freewheeling, but never too far outside – working with a really great sensibility between the members of the group. The music is dynamic, but never in a way that's forced or showoffy – and the set's filled with great originals by members of the group – who include Hans Kennel on trumpet, Paul Haag on trombone, Heiner Althaus on tenor, Armin Keil on piano, and Alex Bally on drums. Titles include "Snobben", "Keiler", "Welcome", "Incarnation", "Leaving The City", "Segara Village", "Fjorden", and "Paris Minor". CD features four more tracks than the LP! CD

Roy Lee Johnson & The VillagersRoy Lee Johnson & The Villagers ... CD
Stax/BGP (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A smoking funky set from early 70s Stax Records – the only album we've ever seen from Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers, and a stone cooker all the way through! The sound is hard and heavy on most numbers – with loads of funky 45-styled riffs – and the core group is a nicely self-contained unit, with a lot of focus on the rhythm section – but they also get some great help here from the Memphis Horns, who blow over the top beautifully, and add a nicely soulful vibe to the record! Drums are nice and hard – and titles include the killer "The Dryer (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Razorback Circus", "Robot", "Midnight At Riley's", "Don't Tell Me Nothing About My Woman", "Patch It Up", and "I'll Be Your Doctor Man". ✨✧ Elvin JonesLive At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Prime post-Coltrane material from Elvin Jones – featuring his "power trio" style of operation, with one great sax player out front, and Jones kicking it in the back with the bass player! In this case, the sax player is George Coleman – who's really finding a voice of his own in these late 60s years, and really makes the most of the extended space of the album to stretch out, soar, and show off his ever-growing talent for a powerful solo! Wilbur Little is on bass, playing nice round warm notes to offset Jones' edgey playing – and the group's joined by trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson on one track – who brings in a soulful edge that's mighty nice. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Laura", "Mister Jones", and "By George". CD

Thad Jones & Mel LewisThad Jones & Mel Lewis Live At The Village Vanguard (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note/EMI (UK), 1967. Used ... $5.99
One of the first albums in a long line of successes from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – recorded live in their home turf at the Village Vanguard! The group at this point was a freshly-created outfit filled with some of the best large group jazz soloists of the time – players that included Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, Pepper Adams, Richard Williams, and Bob Brookmeyer – not to mention Jones and Lewis themselves! The style here is very much in the mode that the Clarke Boland Band was crafting in Europe during the same period – a redefinition of the larger jazz group, in a way that allowed it to swing with the dynamic energy and soul of some of the smaller combos of the 60s. And while the Jones/Lewis group had many years over which to hone their craft, they've never sounded better than on these initial recordings – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Samba Con Getchu", "A That's Freedom", "Bachafillen", and "Little Pixie". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Lover Man", "The Second Race", and "Quietude". CD

Jewish entertainer/musician Mickey Katz has been getting a lot of attention recently – whether it be from modern projects to revive his music, like Don Byron's from a few years ago, or from press in places like The Village Voice, dealing with the resurgence in Jewish cultural identity. Different from the recent Klezmer projects, though, these recordings are graced with the borscht-belt sense of humor and whimsy that was Katz's stock in trade – and have a lightness and sprightliness that makes them sparkle even today. ✨✧ Wynton KellyComin' In The Back Door ... LP
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real cooker of a set – and one that features Wynton's piano over some great larger backings from Claus Ogerman! The style of the set is really wonderful – as Wynton plays with a core smaller group that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, plus regulars Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all of whom make more than ample space for Ogerman to come into the mix and fill up the tunes with some sweetly grooving 60s backings – often using electric bass to punch up the bottom, and rollick things around in a stepping style that's a nice mainstream take on the soul jazz groove that Kelly virtually helped invent! A few tracks are more in a small combo mode, but even those manage a pretty darn smoking groove – and overall, the album's got a lot more depth than even some of Kelly's best for the Vee Jay label from previous years! Titles include the bossa groover "Cesar & Cleopatra" – plus "Quiet Village", "If That's The Way You Want It", "Comin' In The Back Door", and "Theme From Burke's Law". LP, Vinyl record album

The last in a classic trilogy of late 70s fusion albums that Steve Khan cut for Columbia records – and a set that really has him bringing his sound together in a wonderful way! Khan was working with Steely Dan on the Gaucho album at the time of the recordings – testified by Donald Fagan's notes to the record – and he really seems to have picked up their large overall musical vision, that way of making things perfect, but never in a slick style – working here with other fusion giants who include Don Grolnick on Fender Rhodes, Michael Brecker on tenor and soprano sax, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – plus lots of great drums from Steve Gadd. KinksKinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $499.99
One of the greatest albums from The Kinks – the kind of material that pulled them strongly past their bluesy, garagey roots – into a role that has them giving some of the clearest, keenest visions of 20th Century British society – with all of its joys and worries! The tunes here are wonderful – well-penned little odes to the common man and fading scenes and styles of the UK – presented together as a sublime portrait of a late 60s England that hardly any other group would try to touch – all with wit and wisdom from the great Ray Davies, and loads of tuneful work from the rest of the band. Titles include "Do You Remember Walter?", "Picture Book", "Sitting By The Riverside", "Village Green", "All Of My Friends Were There", and "The Village Green Preservation Society". More Kinks music than you could ever hope for in one package – a whopping 3CD set that brings together every bit of music associated with the landmark Village Green Preservation Society album! The original record is one of the best-ever British pop albums from the 60s – and it has the Kinks moving past their garage rock roots into a whole new realm of picture postcard pop perfection! The 15 songs on the original LP are the blueprint for closeted Brit postwar worry, anxiety, and disillusion – classics like "Do You Remember Walter?", "Picture Book", "Sitting By The Riverside", "Village Green", "All of My Friends Were There", and "The Village Green Preservation Society". This new CD moves past those 15 tracks to feature a total of 52 titles in all – including mono and stereo mixes of tracks on the record, alternate takes, remakes, and obscure cuts like "Groovy Movies", "Spotty Grotty Anna", "Days", "Mr Songbird", "Polly", and "Berkley Mews". ✨✧ KinksKinks Part 1 – Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround ... CD
Castle (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
An album that maybe marked the close of one chapter of The Kinks, and the start of another – music that still holds on to some of the best elements of their late 60s Village Green era, but which also moves the group into some of the headier territory of their Muswell Hill/RCA years too! Ray Davies has never sounded more earnest – still able to pull off wit when needed, but also more down to earth – and because of the massive title hit, the set was also one that put the group in front of the ears or more folks than had been hearing them in previous years. Titles include, of course, the mega-hit "Lola" – plus "This Time Tomorrow", "Apeman", "Strangers", "The Contenders", "Long Way From Home", "Rats", and "Top Of The Pops". CD
