✨✧ VariousPounds Of Soul – Serious Soul Ballads & Beaters From Los Angeles & All Points South ... CD
Kent/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of lost soul – featuring countless great tracks we'd never heard before, and some killer unissued cuts making their first appearance! The CD focuses on the harder sound of LA's famous Modern Records label – tracks mostly recorded in the late 60s, with a heavy style that showed the changes of the times, and a rougher edge that borrowed a lot from southern artists recording in Memphis, Jackson, & Muscle Shoals. The whole thing's great – like coming across a pile of forgotten singles in the back of a record shop in a small town in Arkansas – and titles include "Funky Way" by Jimmy Bee, "Keep On Forgiving You" by Vernon Garrett, "I Just Love Your Work" by Jeb Stuart, "Fill My Needs" by Millie Foster, "I Wanna Love You" by Joe Haywood, "Satisfied Woman Satisfied Man" by Vernon Garrett, "What You See Is What You're Gonna Get" by Brenda George, "IT's Real (part 2)" by Jimmy Robins, "First Come First Served" by Betty Bibbs, "Without A Love" by Jackie Day, "Georgia Woman" by Freeman King, and "Who Will You Favor" by Tommy Youngblood. VariousKent's Cellar Of Soul ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A really socking collection of 60s soul – reissued with great notes, excellent sound, and a stunning selection of tunes that includes many many rare numbers! The package is made up nearly entirely of tracks from rare singles – and the groove runs from Northern Soul, to sock boogaloo soul, to hard-stepping female numbers, and even a bit of funk! The groove is very strong all the way through, and titles include "Chain Reaction" by The Spellbinders, "A Lot Of Love" by Homer Banks, "She's Looking Good" by Rodger Collins, "My Elusive Dreams" by Moses & Joshua Dillard, "You Gave Me Somebody To Love" by The Dreamlovers, "Get It From The Bottom" by The Steelers, "I Must Love You" by The Falcons, "Shine It On" by Vernon Garrett, "Keep My Woman Home" by Danny White, "She Shot A Hole In My Soul" by Clifford Curry, "Save Your Money" by Lonnie Mack, "You Left The Water Running" by Barbara Lynn, "That's How Strong My Love Is" by OV Wright & The Keys, "Soul Serenade" by Beau Dollar & The Coins, "The Real Thing" by Tina Britt, "Hole In The Wall" by The Packers, and "Karate Boo Ga Loo" by Jerry O. VariousStars Of Modern EP ... 7-inch
Modern/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy (pic cover)... $9.99
Four rare slices of west coast soul – all hand-picked from the overlooked catalog of Modern Records – a label that's better-known for its R&B of the 50s, but which served up some fantastic soul in the following decade! Jackie Day belts it out of the park on "Before It's Too Late" – an upbeat, positive groover – and Vernon Garrett almost hits Tyrone Davis territory, with his own different tune titled "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time". The Frank Wilson-penned "I've Gotta Get You Back" has a Detroit soul vibe – thanks to sweet lead vocals from Mary Love, and some nicely crafted arrangements – and Johnny Gilliam follows with "You Make Me Feel Like Someone" – a lost sophisticated soul cut that's very much in the best Walter Jackson territory of the time! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousFor Connoisseurs Only Vol 3 – Kent/Modern Soul Collectables ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
No need to be a connoisseur to enjoy this set – because the tunes here are all plenty darn groovy – rare soul numbers with an instant appeal to our ears, thanks to their freshness and the quality of the work! The package features rare singles and a bunch of previously unissued tracks from the vaults of the Kent/Modern labels – most recorded at the end of the 60s, in a range of soulful styles! Some numbers have a sweeter feel, but many echo the headier sounds of the times – bringing in some funkier or psychedelic soul influences, even when the themes might be a bit more conventional, or the grooves a bit more mellow. As always with Kent, the package features loads of notes on the music – enough to help even a novice become a connoisseur after a few listenings – and the CD features 24 titles that include "Cut Me Loose" by Gene Taylor, "Beverly" by Billy Watkins, "If I'd Lose You" by Jackie Day, "That Righteous Feeling" by Marvin Phillips & The Spinners, "My Name Is Misery" by Al King, "I've Gotta Get You Back" by Mary Love, "I'm Guilty" by Vernon Garrett, "Can't Count The Days" by Jeb Stuart, "Baby Baby Baby" by Leon Peterson, "The Ta Ta Song" by Little Henry & The Shamrocks, and "It's OK" by Esther Williams.
