✨✧ WarWar Live! ... LP
United Artists, 1973. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
War live, a perfect step forward – especially given that the group had already been so jamming on all their previous work in the studio! This classic double-length set may well be one of the best soul live albums of the 70s – right up there with similar 2LP packages from Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers – and like both of those, maybe an even greater flowering of the core essence than any short studio record! The album features a killer two part reading of "Slippin Into Darkness", a side-long take on "Get Down", and long versions of "Cisco Kid", "Sun Oh Son", "All Day Music", "Lonely Feelin", and "Ballero". ✨✧ WarWhy Can't We Be Friends? ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great! Like Earth Wind & Fire at their best, War have this way of staying strong and righteous, while still able to hit a hook – jamming one minute, but finding sharp focus the next – and balancing it all out over the course of an album so that there's a sense of depth that really keeps on going once the familiar cuts draw you in. In this case, the familiar cuts are giants – the stunning Latin funk gem "Low Rider", which became an anthem for a generation, and the radio hit "Why Can't We Be Friends" – mixed with other nuggets like the jazzy "Don't No One Get You Down", the funky "Heartbeat", and the cuts "Lotus Blossom", "Smile Happy", "So", and "Leroy's Latin Lament". ✨✧ WarWorld Is A Ghetto ... CD
United Artists/Rhino, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A monster from start to finish – not only the greatest album from War, but maybe one of the greatest mainstream funk albums of all time! The set's got a really unique groove – one that so many others tried to copy, but which was forged here first – in a wicked LA blend of Chicano funk, heavy organ lines, and soulful singing that sews the whole thing together perfectly. Just about every cut is upbeat and funky – rolling along at that low-rider pace that was War's lasting contribution to funk music – and the album features the huge hits "World Is A Ghetto" and "Cisco Kid", two of the brightest spots on radio funk from the 70s – plus classics like "Four Cornered Room", "City Country City", "Where Was You At", and "Beetles In The Bog". ✨✧ Randy WestonLittle Niles ... LP
United Artists, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by Randy Weston! Forget his trio stuff, this is the material that made him an instant legend in the late 50s! The record's a mindblowing batch of original compositions by Randy, arranged by Melba Liston, and featuring players like Ray Copeland, Johnny Griffin, and Charlie Persip – as well as Randy and Melba themselves. Langston Hughes wrote the liner notes, and the whole thing's so super-hip you won't believe it! Titles include "Babe's Blues", "Little Niles", "Earth Birth", and "Pam's Waltz" – all done in the full-group versions that have an angular, Monk-ish quality – and which represent one of the strongest statements in modern jazz at the end of the 50s! Mosaic/United Artists/Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $49.99
Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. Nearly every record features arrangements by Melba Liston – and if you've ever wondered where to start with Randy, this is it – because the set encapsulates nearly all of the biggest contributions he ever made to jazz! 40 titles in all – with tunes that include "Little Niles", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "204", "CB Blues", "Where", "Fe Double U Blues", "African Lady", "Bantu", "Kucheza Blues", "Blues To Africa", and "Congolese Children". United Artists/Kritzerland, 1976. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly intimate score from John Williams – recorded right at the start of his bigger fame for late 70s epics, but done with a personal quality that really fits the mood of this unusual film with Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson! The style is definitely western, but in modes that are different than the more dramatic styles used in other films of the genre – almost more Americana overall, with lots of playful folksy touches, and a fair bit of acoustic guitar, harmonica, fiddle, and other instruments that get a lot of space out front in the lead. This great 2CD package features the original album of music, plus the work used in the film – and some bonus tracks as well! ✨✧ Bobby WomackCommunication ... LP
United Artists, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time great ones from Bobby Womack – and a set that definitely helped push the singer into the mainstream of soul in the 70s! Bobby says thanks to Sly Stone on the back of this album – and it's clear that he's gotten a good dose of Sly's funky soul to kick things up a bit from earlier records! Part of the record was cut in Muscle Shoals, and it's still got that rootsy southern style of Bobby's late 60s work – but there's also a tighter LA funk sound in the mix, with lots of electric guitar solos and funky electric keyboards – a blend that really helps Womack stretch past his southern soul roots, and find an even broader audience, yet without sounding commercial or cliched at all. Titles include the righteous "Communication", plus "That's The Way I Feel About 'Cha", "Everything Is Beautiful", "Come L'Amore", and a monologue-heavy version of "Close To You" that's a bit on the Isaac Hayes tip. And hey, Pam Grier's on backup vocals, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby WomackFacts Of Life ... LP
United Artists, 1973. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Bobby Womack at the height of his powers – perfectly balancing southern soul roots and 70s soul polish – with an amazing sound that was unlike anyone else at the time! The set was recorded at Muscle Shoals, but has a quality that goes way beyond any of the standard modes from the studio – almost as if Bobby brought a special sort of magic to the sessions that made everyone rise above the sometimes too-familiar work they were giving to the bigger names who were traipsing through the studio. Of course, a big part of the success of the album comes from Womack's amazing vocal delivery – that style that's raspy, yet warm – and which is a perfect fit for the well-penned tunes on the set. Titles include "I'm Through Trying To Prove My Love To You", "Nobody", "If You Can't Give Her Love Give Her Up", and a very cool version of "The Look Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby WomackI Don't Know What The World Is Coming To ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The cover and the title are a great illustration of the growth of Bobby Womack on this classic 70s set – a mode of presentation that's maybe a bit more badass than before, without the down-home image of Bobby holding his guitar! Some aspects of the record are plenty darn righteous – and live up to the social commentary of the title – and these are mixed with Womack's rootsy vocals in a way that's really unique – almost as if a Marvin Gaye message album was crafted down in Memphis or Muscle Shoals. Some bits of the record are almost blackploitation funk in their use of wicked keyboards, sharp guitar, and larger charts – and the tunes blend together in this very cool way that really makes the whole set fit together nicely. Womack's voice is fantastic, as always – and titles include "Put Something Down On It", "What's Your World", "Git It", "I Don't Know", "Jealous Love", and 2 very nice "Interlude" tracks! United Artists, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Bobby Womack – one of those records that has all his best elements firmly in place, put forward at a level that's sophisticated and polished, yet never too commercial at all! Bobby's voices are still incredible – that raspy, personal feel that's rooted in country and deeper soul modes, yet ready to take on the mainstream as well – and the tracks also still feature lots of his wonderful guitar work, which inflects the music with these deeper feelings that really holds strong – and definitely lives up to the initial charm of Womack's first few records on Minit. Most of the set was recorded at Muscle Shoals, but as a place where Womack was travelling from LA – a fact that definitely shows in the mix of rootsy elements and tighter construction – yet still handled here without any of the cliches that so many other artists might hit when recording on that scene. Titles include the killer funky stepper "You're Welcome Stop On By", which has been sampled and covered many times over the years – plus "I Don't Wanna Be Hurt By Ya Love Again", "Let It Hang Out", "Lookin For A Love", "Doing It My Way", and "Don't Let Me Down". Sweet funky soul from the great Bobby Womack – a record that mixes Bobby's roots with some of the more righteous modes he picked up on Across 110th Street – blended here in a style that's completely sublime! The record was one of Womack's first to be entirely recorded on the west coast – and has these core grooves that come from the great Wah Wah Watson on guitar and Sonny Burke on keyboards – both players who bring in sharp edges, but can also lay back in a groove as well – helping Bobby perfectly balance funky impulses and mellower moments throughout. There's a sophistication here that really shows the continuing growth of Womack as a musical visionary – and titles include "Everything's Gonna Be Alright", "Daylight", "Love Ain't Something You Can Get For Free", "I Feel A Groove Coming On", and versions of "I Wish It Would Rain" and "Something You Got". A heady, hairy solo album from the great Roy Wood – very different than his material with Wizzard, and definitely a solo set, given that Roy handled everything about the album himself – from all the vocals and instruments, to all the production and arrangements, to all the artwork on the cover! The record's also got this very unusual pastiche of styles, too – each song is very different, almost as if the album's an experiment by Wood, trying out different facets of his musical ability – and combining them into a set that's way more experimental than you'd guess for the time, or for a record on a major label. Some tracks are very tuneful and catchy, but sit next to looser, more openly-shaped work – and the balance is fantastic, a bit like a classic Todd Rundgren record – where you'd have a brilliant radio-ready track right next to a looser bit of sonic creativity. Titles include the Brian Wilson-like "Why Does Such A Pretty Girl Song Those Sad Songs" – plus "Look Thru The Eyes Of A Fool", "Interlude/Get On Down Home", "Mustard", "Any Old Time Will Do", and "The Rain Came Down On Everything". Young Men From Memphis (Booker Little, George Coleman, Harold Mabern, & Others)Down Home Reunion ... CD
United Artists/Universal (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $10.99
It's a little-known fact that Memphis had a huge influence on the sound of late 50s/early 60s soul jazz – probably because most of the city's best players had to leave and go either to Chicago or New York to make their name. This set's a great reminder of that fact, as it brings together an important batch of players, most of them only freshly departed from Memphis at the time of the session – an assemblage that includes Frank Strozier, Phineas Newborn, Booker Little, Louis Smith, George Coleman, and Calvin Newborn. The tracks are long open-ended blowing session tunes – very different than the usual format for just about every player involved, which also makes for quite a striking record. Titles include very long takes on "Blue N Boogie", "Star Eyes", "After Hours", and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". CD

A pretty striking little record in the Frank Zappa catalog – the double-length soundtrack for the movie of the same name, and a set that explodes the Zappa palette of sound even further than some of his previous albums! A number of tracks feature a full studio orchestra – sounding as if they were lined up to perform a conventional Hollywood film score, but somehow tricked into working with Frank when he showed up on the podium to conduct the proceedings! Other tunes echo more of the Mothers Of Invention material, but with shorter selections, and lots of twists and turns along the way – all of which make the whole record this really mad pastiche of songs, sounds, and sonic interplay. Titles include "This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich", "Redneck Eats", "She Painted Her Face", "Janet's Big Dance Number", "Daddy Daddy Daddy", "The Girl's Dream", "A Nun Suit Painted On Some Old Boxes", and "Mystery Roach". Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual live set from the great Art Blakey – his only album for the United Artists label, but one that continues the tradition of the expanded group style he was starting to use at Blue Note! The lineup here is a sextet, one that's got even more power than the Jazz Messengers as a quintet – a group that bridges generations with older Messengers Wayne Shorter on tenor and Jymie Merritt on bass – alongside rising talents Curtis Fuller on trombone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Cedar Walton on piano – the last of whom leaves a key mark on the group's sound, through his mix of soulful groove and lyrical inflections! There's maybe even more searing energy here than on the previous live Blue Note albums from Blake. This first volume includes the version of "Three Blind Mice" that was sampled years ago by Gang Starr, plus the cuts "Plexis", "Children Of The Night", "Up Jumped Spring", and "Blue Moon". CD

International Artists, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
The lone album from the Bubble Puppy – a monumental effort of late 60s hard grooving psychedelia – and one of very best albums to come out of the original Texas psych scene! A couple of the Pup's labelmates at United Artists get a lot of revelry all these years later, and rightfully so – who would argue the importance of The Red Krayola and 13th Floor Elevators – but Bubbly Puppy deserve to be on that top shelf, too. The sound is tight and hard hitting, with trippy lyricism and groovy group harmonies, while the guitars range from cathartic fuzz to some surprisingly pretty melodicism. Not as far out as some of their peers, but the groove is absolutely killer. Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his second wave of singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Clarence was great right from the start, but here you can really hear him finding his own voice – that all-knowing, storytelling approach that could make even a simple lyric spin out in a way that was totally captivating – with a quality that set Carter apart from some of his more tear-jerked southern soul contemporaries, into a space of class and confidence that would serve him well for years to come! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and although the singles were initially issues over a few different labels (Fame, Atlantic, and United Artists) – they're brought together here in complete order, for a massive 22 track set. Tracks include "I'm The One", "I Hate To Love & Run", "Slipped Tripped & Fell In Love", "Say It One More Time", "It's All In Your Mind", "Sixty Minute Man", "Heartbreak Woman", "Love's Trying To Come To You", "I Found Somebody New", and "Put On Your Shoes & Walk" – plus "If You Can't Beat Em", which is a duet with Candi Staton! Duke University Press, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible look at the format of vinyl – put together by a guy who's got one of the hippest record collections we've ever seen! John Corbett's been writing about music, art, and other formats for decades – but his real labor of love is vinyl records – a format he continued to embrace even at the height of the CD era – so much so that he talked Downbeat magazine into letting him write a special column on musical delights that had never made it to the digital format! Corbett helped plenty of music get reissued on CD himself – thanks to countless label projects – but he also always held a special place in his heart for the kinds of records that never got reissued – and those are the sorts of titles featured here – a massive run of music that runs from jazz to funk, American and European, totally obscure to completely common – presented beautifully together in this massive book! The volume doesn't just bring together Corbett's columns, but also offers up full color reproductions of all the record covers, along with a few other details too – to support efforts on dozens of artists – a huge list that includes Melvin Jackson, Bill Leslie, Black Grass, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Phil Seamen, Khan Jamal, Klaus Doldinger, The Mad-Hatters, Tommy Jones, Guy Warren, The Three Souls, United Front, Johnny Lytle, London Experimental Jazz Quartet, Paul Smoker, AK Salim, Noah Howard, Jack Wilson, and many others – a good number of whom have yet to be reissued. The book is wonderful – and Corbett's longtime declaration of being a vinyl freak is more important than ever, given the rebirth of the medium! Book is 250 pages, softcover, with color images. Book

One of our favorite moments in the strong run of records from Family – a set that's still strongly defined by the vocals and songwriting of Roger Chapman, but which also has a lot more going on as well! John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". A seminal session as a leader by the young Art Farmer – recorded for United Artists, and a great set of tight lyrical tunes, played by Farmer in his sparkling style – in a group along with Benny Golson on tenor and Bill Evans on piano. Evans is a special treat here, as the 1958 session was recorded at a time when he was making a fair bit of appearances in various rhythm sections for horn players (like Miles Davis) – and although this role in Evans' career was a short one, it yielded some amazingly beautiful moments, as you'll hear on this album. Art's brother Addison plays bass, and Dave Bailey rounds out the group on drums. Tracks include "Cold Breeze", "Mox Nix", "Jubilation", and "Fair Weather". Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of all the great and rare material Eddie Holland cut as solo singer in the late 50s and early 60s – including the incredible early Motown material, plus tracks he cut for Mercury, Kudo, Tamla and United Artists! Of course Eddie Holland is best remembered for uber-legendary work as producer, composer and arranger with the Holland-Dozier-Holland super soul unit – for damn good reason, but it's his early work as singer is way too strong to be considered a mere footnote to his greater legacy. Many of the cuts were written and produced by Berry Gordy, along with numbers written and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, some recorded more famously by later acts, so what you truly have here is the foundation for great things to come – it's beautiful stuff that shines brightly in its own light. Eddie's a solid singer and the songs are terrific, formative stuff that's a pivotal bridge from earlier R&B to massive soul. 56 tracks on 2CDs: "Little Miss Ruby", "Will You Love Me", "Just A Few More Days", "It's Not Too Late", "Just Ain't Enough Love", "Brenda", "Baby Shake", "Magic Mirror", "If Cleopatra Took A Chance", "Action Speaks Louder than Words", "Bashful Kind", "Too Late To Cry", "Happy Go Lucky", "Pretty Little Angel Face", "Day Dreamer", "Rain And Thunder", "I Like Everything About You", "Happy Days" and many more. This set goes deeper than any compilation we've seen of Eddie's recordings, too, with a number of previously unissued Mercury recordings. CD

A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin jazz previously on labels like Verve and United Artists – but given a bit more of the Atlantic-era punch here as well! The group features some wonderful vibes from John Rae – whose tones ring out beautifully on some of the best numbers – plus a mix of Latin and African-styled percussion from Ray Barretto, Olatunjii, and Ray Mantilla – who really make the record cook. A few tunes feature an added trumpet group, and the rest are mostly just flute and percussion – on titles that include "St Thomas", "Walkin", "Uhuru", "High Life", and "Sawa Sawa De". The quintet on the set features George Coleman on tenor, Junior Mance on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and the whole thing's got an easygoing mellow feel that we really like a lot. One of the boldest, most righteous 70s statements from trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given his previous body of work! The set's cast in the same large ensemble mode as Hannibal's Children Of The Fire album – and like that one, it features an array of all-star players, all united in the trumpeter's rich vision – artists who include Deirdre Murray on cello, Billy Hart on drums, Michael Cochrane on piano, Art Webb on flute, and Pat Peterson on vocals! Tracks are long, and build with energy that's very much in the Strata East mode – a vibe that Hannibal didn't seem to have down this well in the earlier part of the 70s, but which he more than made up for at the end of the decade with a record like this. A brilliant pairing of two key figures from the ESP avant scene of the 60s – united here in a great entry to the Tzadik label's series of "Radical Jewish Culture"! The album features Robinson's spare reeds – mostly clarinet, plus a bit of flute and ocarina – matched with Greene's great piano lines, played with much more sensitivity than we remember in the past, a really great sound alongside Perry's deep-toned reed lines. There's a definite appeal here to fans of jazz klezmer work, but the record also really lives up to the older promise of the artists' earlier avant recordings too – especially some of the rare few sides that Robinson made after his initial appearance in the 60s. The sound is spare, and often sad-tinged – and titles include "A Lamentation", "Syl's Freylekhs", "Song For My Friend Burton", "Ella Turtella", "Der Kats Zogt A Miowke", and "Desert Suite". CD

A really cool collection – one that's maybe best summed up by the word "ecstatic" in the title – as the package presents a blend of work from artists who easily skirt both the spiritual and secular side of soulful music, united together with a very joyous, uplifting vibe in their sound! This isn't classic gospel from the years when you might hear a guitar or organ behind a small group of harmonizing vocals – and instead, much of this work was created at a time when soul music had already been going strong for years – and while gospel might have initially helped in the formation of soul, it's clear that things are also moving the other direction in these tracks – as many of these artists borrow from the power of righteous soul styles, and use it to inflect their joyous message with a great new energy! Titles include "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright" by Keith Barrow, "Is There Anybody Here" by The Alvin Darling Ensemble, "Trouble's Brewin" by The Meditation Singers, "Satisfied" by Andre Crouch & The Disciples, "Let Your Feet Down Easy" by Dorothy Norwood, "If You Believe Your God Is Dead" by Swan Silvertones, "The Upper Way" by The Violinaires, "Elijah" by Roscoe Robinson, "Till I've Got This Feelin Of Love" by Dyson's Faces, and "Nothing Can Stop Me Now" by Destiny. LP, Vinyl record album

Bear Family (Germany), 1930s/1940s/1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If you know us at all, you'll know that we really love a well-themed compilation – and we're especially in love with the sort of collection like this – which can bring together all sorts of weird and unusual singles with the united spirit of a holiday theme! This collection is even cooler and groovier than some other Halloween compilations out there – as in addition to the monster rock and horror film trailers that usually show up, there's some surprising contributions from jazz vocalists, mainstream entertainers, and country artists – which make the whole thing an array of surprises all the way through! The notes and song selection are up there with the best from Bear Family – and titles include "Monster Gonzales" by Tommy Bruce & The Bruisers, "Vampira" by Bobby Bare, "Strollin Spooks" by Ken Nordine, "Dragonfly" by Tommy Dee & The Mellotones "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "Creature From Outer Space" by Sonny Day, "Ghost Trains" by Hank Snow, "The Monsters Hop" by Bert Convy, "Dead" by The Poets, "The Boogie Man" by The Cadillacs, "The Ghost Hop" by The Surfmen, "The Headless Horseman" by Kay Starr, and "Spooky" by George Barnes. ✨✧ VariousSongs In The Key Of Z – The Curious Universe Of Outsider Music ... CD
Gammon, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Crazy stuff – and a very fitting compilation of tracks designed to accompany the excellent Songs In The Key of Z book by Irwin Chusid. Chusid's book looks at the history of "outsider music" in the US – the odd fringes of the underground, where conventional expectations about music are thrown away in the mad vision of adventurous artists with a mission to create and express as never before. There's a few familiar names on here, but there's a lot more wild stuff that we've never ever heard before – and although the styles are a real mixup, the tracks are all united by their uniqueness and by Chusid's thoughtful production of the package. Titles include "Walking On The Moon" by Lucia Pamela, "Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" by Peter Grudzien, "Virgin Child Of The Universe" by Song-Poem, "In Canada" by BJ Snowden, "Cousin Mosquito #1" by Congresswoman Malinda Jackson Parker, "At The Grass Roots" by Sri Darwin Gross, and "They Told Me I Was A Fool" by Jandek. 20 tracks in all.
