VariousLuxury Soul 2024 (3CD set) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2024. New Copy 3CDs ... $22.99 26.99
A great entry in this series that not only always delivers the goods, but does so at a price that's a hell of a great bargain for all the excellent music involved! Expansion Records brings together a handful of titles from their own releases in recent years, plus other neo soul gems from the global underground – both American and British artists, some better-known names, some great up-and-comers waiting to be discovered – all of which makes for a package that packs plenty of punch! Most tracks appear here on CD for the first time ever – and the 3CD set features 35 titles that include "I'd Rather Be In Love With You (the sax way)" by Sheree Brown, "Intoxicated Love" by Castella, "If You Wanna Know What's Missing" by Julian Jonah with Dutch Robinson, "Think About" by Sugar & Heath, "Soul N'Samba" by Tyrone Lee, "Baby Let's Go (soul mix)" by Narada Michael Walden, "Step With Me" by Victor Haynes, "I Love Me Too" by Carol Riddick, "Do You Remember" by Steven Thad, "I Found Love" by Rose Spearman & Soul City Connection, "Harvest For The World" by Patrice Isley, "Keep On Giving (rmx)" by Shaila Prospere, "Smooth" by Con Funk Shun, "Elementary" by Robert Imtume Owens, "Sometimes" by Brian Power with Cornell CC Carter, "Right The Wrong" by Natasha Watts, and "Could It Really Be" by Mike Lindup with Tony Momrelle. ✨✧ James SpauldingSongs Of Courage ... CD
Muse, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from James Spaulding – one of the few players of his generation who actually got better with age! As he was in his classic 60s Blue Note recording sessions with other leaders, Spaulding is a hell of a group player – extremely sensitive to the other members of his groups – both able to maintain a strong voice, yet give ample room to that of the others in his company. This 1991 recording features Spaulding blowing in a group with Roland Alexander on tenor, Tyrone Jefferson on trombone, Kenny Barron on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – grooving in a modal mode that's kind of an extension of late 60s styles used by Horace Silver or Lee Morgan. Titles include "Cabu", "Uhuru Sasa", "Song Of Courage", and "King". CD
(Out of print, booklet has a cut corner.)

✨✧ VariousPulp Fusion – Bustin Loose ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest sets ever in the Pulp Fusion series – an amazing collection of rare funky tracks that goes past the obvious 70s classics on other volumes! This double-length volume is the work of Monk-One – who's clearly willing to dig a bit deeper than most, and come up with fresh tunes that really re-ignite the series, and show us why it's been one of the most trusted funky collections around for years. There's loads of rare nuggets here – and cuts include "Shack Up" by Banbarra, "Keep On Dancing" by Alvin Cash, "Up Above The Rock" by Ray Bryant, "El Jardia" by Johnny Pate, "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, "Inner City Blues" by Sarah Vaughan, "Take Me With You" by Lyn Christopher, "Keep It Up" by Milton Wright, "Gengis" by Chico Hamilton, "Fried Chicken" by Rufus Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Through It All There's You" by Robert Palmer, "Senga" by Manu Dibango, "Black Water Gold" by African Music Machine, "Reach Out" by Lee Moses, and "Happy Man" by Latin Blues Band. ✨✧ VariousLost In Sound – Rare Soul & Funk Essentials ... CD
Perpetual, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really well-done collection – filled with enough funky gems to grab the ears of any sample-conscious listener, but also packing plenty of unusual numbers too – including a few Latin tracks that fit in perfectly with the spirit of the sound! A number of these cuts have definitely been sampled over the years – but as is always the case, the fuller tracks are often a lot more interesting than the riff or drum part that was taken from them – and together, the titles here show that there's always plenty to dig when you know how to dig deep – as you'll hear on titles that include "Home" by Gloria Barnes, "I'm Moving On" by Chyvonne Scott, "Natural Beauty" by LJ Waiters, "Afro Funky" by Manteca, "Something Bad" by The Chosen Few, "What Happened To Yesterday" by Al Scott, "Los Feligreses" by Luis Santi, "Every Boy & Girl" by Lee Moses, "Man Of Value" by Tyrone Barkley, "I'm Sorry I Hurt You" by Nat Phillips, and "Cookie Crumbs" by Ray & His Court. ✨✧ Vernon GarrettGoing To My Baby's Place (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Grenade/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the funkiest work we've ever heard from Vernon Garrett – recorded in California, but with a nicely gritty southern soul sound! The tunes have some of the bluesy inflections of Vernon's more famous work – but they also come across with a groove that's tighter, especially on the drums, which snap out of the warmer backings with a kick that's a bit unusual for a record like this – and which keeps things lively throughout, even on some of the mellower numbers. Vernon's vocals are great – rich, and touched with a bit of Tyrone Davis-like styles – and female vocalist Margaret Love makes an appearance on many of the numbers on the record too. Titles include "Satisfied Woman Satisfied Man", "I Made My Own World", "Don't Do What I Do", "I Learned My Lesson", "Going To My Baby's Place", "Love Junkie", and "Something Went Wrong". CD

✨✧ Willie TeeI'm Only A Man (LP sleeve edition with bonus track) ... CD
Capitol/Get On Down, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the only albums ever from Willie Tee – an artist who's usually known best for his funky 45s, but who really shines here in the space of a full-length record! Willie's got a killer vocal style, with a warm raspy style that reminds us a bit of Tyrone Davis – but he's produced here with a swinging soul vibe by David Axelrod, and he sings to some spectacular arrangements by HB Barnum that are in his best style of the late 60s! The tracks are a wonderful mix of raw soul vocals and sophisticated production, and the album's the kind of rare soul album that we only ever turn up once in a while! Includes a great vocal version of Cannonball Adderley's "Walk Tall", plus the tracks "Bring On The Heartaches", "I'm Only A Man", "Mirror", and "Take Your Time". Excellent stuff! CD
