Barry Altschul3Dom Factor ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2013. Used ... $9.99
Blistering work from drummer Barry Altschul – working here in the company of bold young tenorist Jon Irabgon, and matching his youthful energy at every step! The set's easily one of the most driven we've heard from Altschul in many years – a trio date that also features the bass of Joe Fonda, but which really draws most of its magic from Irabgon's horn, and the way that Barry reaches out strongly to provide just the right vibe. Tunes are almost all originals from Altschul – and titles include "Natal Chart", "A Drummer's Song", "Papa's Funkish Dance", "Be Out S'Cool", "Oops", and "Just A Simple Song". CD

Wadada Leo SmithSolo – Reflections & Meditations On Monk ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith never fails to blow us away – and even though he's captured our ear with recent higher-concept projects or other group work, he sounds equally mindblowing here in a completely solo setting! As you'd guess from the title, the set's based around the musical vision of Thelonious Monk – territory not often explored on solo trumpet, and handled beautifully here by Smith – both on his long extrapolations based on Monk's compositions, and on his own tunes dedicated to Monk – which are these bold, brilliant paintings in sound that the legendary pianist would have been proud to hear. We're not sure what's in the water over at Smith's house, but he's really had this amazing blossom of fresh creativity in recent years – as you'll hear on his compositions here, entitled "Monk & His Five Point Ring At The Five Spot Cafe", "Monk & Bud Powell At Shea Stadium", and "Adagio Monkishness – A Cinematic Vision Of Monk Playing Solo" – alongside versions of Monk tunes that include "Ruby My Dear", "Reflections", "Round Midnight", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithNajwa ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wadada Leo Smith is really on fire here – on a record that feels a lot more like something from the early 80s underground than some of his earlier work – from the lineup of performers, right down to the overall sound of the set! The group's very heavy on guitars – and features work from Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, Brandon Ross, and Lamar Smith on the instrument – often criss-crossing and weaving these beautiful sonic textures – powerful, but never too noisy, and augmented beautifully by some surprisingly thoughtful bass work by Bill Laswell – whose at his most subtle and collaborative here. The rest of the lineup features Pheeroan AkLaff on drums and Adam Rudolph on piano – and Wadada's trumpet really soars to the skies on the longer tracks, which include "Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Sonic Hierographic Forms – A Resonance Change In The Millenium", "Ronald Shannon Jackson – The Master Of Symphonic Drumming & Multi-Sonic Rhythms Inscriptions Of A Rare Beauty", and "Ohnedaruth John Coltrane – The Master Of Kosmic Music & His Spirituality In A Love Supreme". ✨✧ Billy BangDa Bang ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last sessions ever recorded by the legendary Billy Bang – but a set that still bristles with all the intensity that first made us fall in love with his music! If anything, the album's almost a back-to-basics effort for Billy – served up with the kind of soulful, searching sounds he first brought to his seminal albums on the Black Saint/Soul Note label – and quite different than some of his higher concept sessions in more recent years. The group's a great one, full of pulsating improvisational energy – as Billy's violin is joined by the trombone of Dick Griffin, piano of Andrew Bemkey, bass of Hilliar Greene, and drums of Newman Taylor Baker. Griffin's presence is especially great, and really helps deepen the sound – and titles include "All Blues", "Day Dreams", "Guinea", "Da Bang", and "Law Years". CD

Peter BenjaminsonMary Wells – The Tumultuous Life Of Motown's First Superstar (hardcover) ... Book
Chicago Review Press, 2012. New Copy ... $8.99 29.95
A stunning look at the great Mary Wells – one of Motown's first female acts of the 60s, and one of the decade's most important early soul figures as well! Mary's work on record is very well-known, but the story behind the music is completely different, and surprisingly dark at times – a tale of a talented artist often caught between larger corporate forces, and personal antagonists as well – not to mention her own personal demons. Peter Benjaminson does a great job of getting at all these details without being overly sensational – and he works in lots of wonderful personal recollections from friends and colleagues who really help illuminate the more private moments. The book is over 300 pages, hardcover, with some black and white photos. Book

Amartey HedzolehKukurantumi ... LP
Chop Time (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Excellent solo work from Amartey Hedzoleh – a key member of the important Afro Funk combos Psychedelic Aliens and Hedzoleh Sounds – heard here in a set of previously-unreleased tracks from the early 80s! The music is quite rootsy all the way through – with Hedzoleh on vocals and a host of different instruments that include guitar, kalimba, gonje, and jiri – spun out over percussion that's sewn together in tightly rhythmic grooves by some great bass and guitar – often moving at a speed that's pretty intense! The sound is very unique – earthy and almost ethnographic, but with all the rhythmic appeal of studio grooves from the time – and titles include "Pe Pe", "Abonsa Iye Woye", "Abena At Rest House", "Hie Hie Woyaa", "Serious", and "Tontro". Gap MangioneDiana In The Autumn Wind ... CD
Josh Music, 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
A totally great little album from Gap Mangione – the lesser-known brother of Chuck! The difference between Gap and Chuck was that Gap was always hipper, cooler, and a bit funkier – as you'll hear in this excellent debut LP from 1968! Gap's working here in some amazing territory – taking styles of jazz from 60s soundtracks, and working them into a slightly electrified context that makes for some really cool grooves. Tracks are short, but complicated – with rhythms by a young Tony Levin on bass and Steve Gadd on drums – and lots of piano, organ, and electric piano from Gap! There's a few moments on here that you'll recognize from famous hip hop samples – but even more than those, the album's wonderfully solid overall – a unique jazz vision from the late 60s, and the kind of set that should have had Gap beating out his flugelhorn-playing brother! Titles include "The XI Commandment", "Dream On Little Dreamer", "Long Hair Soulful", "Diana In The Autumn Wind", "Boys With Toys", "Pond With Swans", and "Graduate Medley". CD

Paolo Marini Latin Jazz ComboSoul Of Tumbao ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
A sweet little session of Latin jazz – one that begins with an instrumental cover of a great soul tune by Omar – then only gets better as things go on! Percussionist Paolo Marini is at the helm of the ensemble – but he almost always has a tight blend of trumpet and trombone in the lead, crafting these lines that are richly jazzy, and serve to bring lots of soulful currents to the music – maybe following a more contemporary take on classic meetings of Latin and jazz you might have heard on Verve Records in the 60s. Titles include "There's Nothing Like This", "Prince Of Peace", "Moanin", "Overjoyed", "Spain", "Good Morning World", and "At Sunset". CD

Blue Lady, 1999. Used ... $9.99
A great set from Al McKibbon – Cal Tjader's bassist on a number of classic 60s recordings, and a player who's gone onto become a key force in west coast Latin Jazz! The set's got a no-nonsense jazz-based approach that would have made Cal proud – with McKibbon stepping out in full, round, proud basslines – to lead a group that includes Justo Almario on soprano sax, Charles Owen on flute and tenor, and Phil Wright on piano – all working together in a warm and soulful mode that's very much in the best spirit of the west coast Latin scene. MtumeKiss This World Goodbye ... LP
Epic, 1978. Very Good ... $16.99
An early crossover set from Mtume – one that still holds onto some of the elements first forged in the spiritual jazz underground of the early 70s, yet one that also starts to showcase more of the tighter soul groove he'd burst into prominence in the early 80s! The blend is a great one, and makes the album one of Mtume's most compelling records – as even amidst some of the more grooving numbers, there's some great offbeat elements at work too – almost putting the record in the territory of work by Roy Ayers or Edwin Birdsong. The mighty Hubert Eaves contributes lots of great keyboards to the record, and famous partner Reggie Lucas plays guitar – while Mtume himself sings along with his percussion, and also gets some female vocal help from Tawatha. Titles include the sublime "The Closer I Get To You" – plus "Just Funnin", "Kiss This World Goodbye", "Love Lock", "Metal Flake Mind", and "This Is Your World". LP, Vinyl record album

Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $11.99
Smooth and jazzy soul from the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas – two of the finest producers and arrangers in their field! The set brings together tracks recorded by the pair with a host of different artists across a host of different labels – offering for the first time a true picture of the genius of Mtume, and featuring a load of excellent cuts that are appearing on CD for the first time ever! Mtume himself cut a few famous albums on Columbia, some with Lucas, and together the pair worked across a variety of labels in the late 70s and early 80s – taking modern soul to the next level with a really top-shelf sound! The package is a 15-track monster, filled with loads of great tracks we're happy to have together – and titles include "Love Lock", "Closer I Get To You", and "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume; "Under Your Spell" and "You Know How To Love Me" by Phyllis Hyman, "Never Too Late For Your Lovin" and "Step In The Light" by Sunfire, "What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin" by Stephanie Mills, "Got To Be Love" by The Spinners, "If I Had A Chance" by Rena Scott, "Back To You" and "Now Is The Time For Love" by Lou Rawls, "Keep Going On" by Gary Bartz, and "Two Hearts" by Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass. Raw early 70s rock from Winnipeg – caught in a crazy era between psychedelia and proto-punk, and delivering an oddly endearing sound with bits of both! "6 Times" is a ragged jam by Ronnie & Natalie, a brother & sister duo singing and screaming over glam-psych weirdness. "Turn Me On Woman" is a harder charging track by Stumpwater that has an almost Stooges-y sound, even if they're shooting for a straighter hard rock vibe. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ranny SinclairAnother Autumn ... CD
Columbia/Modern Harmonic, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A long-overdue full length album from Ranny Sinclair – a very cool 60s singer who recorded for Columbia Records with a very groovy style – including a few obscure tracks done with piano legend Dave Brubeck! The sound here is beautiful – breathy at times, with some bossa currents in the rhythms – and a cool, compressed production technique that makes Ranny's vocals glide along beautifully with the instrumentation – a lot like Astrud Gilberto at Verve, or Joanie Sommers on some of her groovier records – but also very unique! Teo Macero produced – and the tracks clearly have the best of the 60s Columbia Records jazz talents behind them – yet only four singles' worth of material were released at the time, which are combined with unreleased tracks to make a really wonderful album. Titles include "Ode To A Cowboy", "Fan The Flame", "There Won't Be Trumpets", "Sweet William", "With Any Other Girl", "Something To Sing About", "Autumn In Our Town", "Barbara Allen", and "A Wonderful Guy". An obscure group that we only know from this album, but one who's got some top-shelf production by 70s soul maestro Skip Scarborough, working here in more of an 80s styled blend of beats and keyboards! The style's a fair bit like more mainstream work on labels like Capitol and Atlantic – tight bass pushing most tracks along in a highly rhythmic mode, while keyboards and drum machine bookend the grooves, but allow plenty of space for the vocals! The group get a bit mainstream funky at times, but kick back more nicely at others – letting their softer vocals echo out with a sweeter style than you might expect. Magical live material from Bill Evans in the early 70s – a double-length collection that showcases a time when Evans had an especially fluid, open touch on the keys of the piano! The group here features the great trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums – and unlike some other live Evans albums of this nature, which tend to mike the piano more than the rhythm, this one really has all three points of the trio coming out strongly together – especially Gomez' wonderfully rich, round tones on the bass. Ellis was an emerging California trumpeter/composer who'd noodled around with some modern big band work in the mid 60s – but this hip 1968 session has him adding in elements like clavinet, Fender Rhodes, sitar, timbales, vibes, percussion, and even a spot of vocals to change the groove to a more mod and swinging one. Titles include "Mercy Mabye Mercy", "New Kind Of Country", "Zim", "Star Children", "Opus 5", "Rasty", "The Tihai", and "Milo's Theme". Plus, the CD also includes some bonus tracks not on the original album! CD

Quartet (Spain), 1973/1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two spooky Spanish soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is music from Horror Rises From The Tomb – sounds that often feature a very weird, often watery organ line – of the sort you'd imagine some creepy guy playing in order to get ghouls to rise from their grave – with a sound that's almost suspended in air, and done with lots of cool, echoey elements around the edges! There's a nice sense of tension, but in a way that's really different than American horror from the generation before – maybe touched by some of the new sense of sound that Italians brought to the genre in their music – and the CD features 13 tracks from the film. Next up is Alfonso Santisteban's great music for The Killer Is One of 13 – sounds that, like some of his other horror work, might be more at home in an Italian romantic film – thanks to great use of woodwinds and gentle grooves! CD only features 4 tracks, but they're all pretty great – and titles include "La Fuga", "Supercelestial", "Con Una Suave Nostalgia", and "En Busca Del Tiempo Perdido". CD

A really great setting for drummer Gerry Hemmingway – an album that has him improvising live with trombonist Samuel Blaser – a fantastic musician who's one of the freshest trombone talents we've heard in years! In previous comments, we've liked Blaser to a modern day heir to the genius of 60s trombonists like Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur – and those words definitely hold true here, as Blaser delivers a wondrous balance between new sounds and tuneful moments, fresh ideas and a longer tradition on his horn – all in ways that make Hemmingway sound even more creative than usual. The album features six duets, all recorded live in a church during a jazz festival in the Netherlands – with titles that include "Spoor", "Rogue", "Mettle", "Bloos", and "Balloon". Columbia/Modern Harmonic, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soul Jazz (UK), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rootsy Latin grooves from Tumba Francesca La Caridad De Oriente – a century old Cuban group dedicated to the preservation of older styles of music and performance! The set has a really earthy feel – recorded recently in Cuba by Soul Jazz Records, but with a timeless quality that takes us back to much earlier days of Afro-Cuban music. The performance is heavy on percussion and vocals – and although the album is a studio recording, there's almost an ethnographic feel overall. Notes are by Ned Sublette, and the album features an introduction to the music by poet Pedro Perez-Sarduy – with titles that include "Societe Guantanamo", "Tambores 2", "Muerive Yo Dila", "Camaguey", "Vamos A Dividir", and "Ven Mi Morena". ✨✧ VariousTake What You Need – UK Covers Of Bob Dylan Songs 1964 to 1968 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of Bob Dylan, taken in completely new directions – served up here by a host of 60s British singers who offer up versions of the tunes that are quite different than American covers of the time! There's definitely a fair bit of folk in the mix here, but there's also some freer, trippier styles too – and many of these numbers have very different vocal phrasing than the originals – which keeps the material from being slavish copycat tunes, and instead really shows the way that the influence of Dylan was subtly developed as the 60s moved on, to a point where groups might have drawn a big inspiration from the man's songs, but also then opened the door to lots of new territory. But if you're a fan of Dylan's originals, don't worry – there's also plenty here to love – as the craft of the man himself really shines through, and shows that in the right creative hands, his style was not watered down, but augmented in great ways. As usual with Ace, the package is superb – 22 tracks, complete with detailed notes – on titles that include "Love Minus Zero" by Noel Harrison, "Don't Think Twice It's All Right" by The Fairies, "One Too Many Mornings" by Julie Felix, "Down Along The Cover" by Cliff Aungier, "Tears Of Rage" by Country Fever, "Lay Lady Lay" by Sandie Shaw, "To Ramona" by The Alan Price Set, "Visions Of Johanna" by The Picadilly Line, "Tom Thumb's Blues" by Alex Campbell, "Oxford Town" by Three City Four, "If You Gotta Go Go Now" by Manfred Mann, "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" by The Cops N Robbers, "Absolutely Sweet Marie" by The Factotums, and "I'm A Lonesome Hobo" by Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger & The Trinity. Verve/Jazz Heritage, 1961. Used ... $5.99
Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Both players are impeccable, and the solos stretch out for a long long very live time. Titles include "Blues Up & Down", "The One Before This", and "Counter Clockwise" – but these guys even groove amazingly on standards like "Autumn Leaves" and "No Greater Love". CD

A nice little 2-fer collecting two great meetings of two greats! Jug and Stitt go head to head on Boss Tenors, a classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Boss Tenors In Orbit was a follow up one year later, an obscure little session with the pair once again recreating the energy of their live shows – as they stretch out nicely on very long tracks that have spare backing by the Don Patterson trio! The cuts are mostly standard stuff – "John Brown's Body", "Walkin", "Long Ago And Far Away" – but the twin-tenor sound is great, and Patterson's free organ lines riff away nicely! ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyIn A Minor Groove/Hip Harp ... CD
Prestige, 1958. Used ... Just Sold Out!
2 of Dorothy Ashby's classic Prestige sessions – back to back on one CD! First up is material from Hip Harp – great stuff by the grooviest artist ever to play a harp! Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound. This set's got harp and flute in the lead, and features the tracks "Pawky", "Charmaine", "Jollity", and "Back Talk". On In A Minor Groove, Ashby swings with an other-wordly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Titles include "Rascallity", "Bohemia After Dark", "Taboo", "Autumn In Rome", and "It's A Minor Thing". CD

A definite disco sensation from Babla – a singer who refits older Indian film songs with new club grooves for the 80s – definitely very much in the mode that's promised by the title! The set features older songs by Shankhar Jakishan, Kalyanji Anadji, and Hemant Kumar – plus a few originals by Babla too – and the instrumentation also has a fair bit of keyboards in the mix, which creates this spacey disco vibe that's not unlike some of the more cosmic club tracks coming from the European scene at the start of the 80s! Rhythms are all upbeat, and the keyboards give the music a darker edge than you might expect – on titles that include "Aye mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal", "Intian Aartis", "Hamko Tumpe Pyar Aaya", "Kabhi Hota Nahin", and "Man Dole Mera Tan Dole". Fantastic! We love Burt Bacharach in so many ways that it's easy to forget the genius of these early A&M sides – but going back to them is always a treat, and it's wonderful to hear the way that Burt lays down his own work when given the chance! You know the tracks – "House Is Not A Home", "Bond Street", "Reach Out For Me", "Are You There", "Windows Of The World" – but you may not know the arrangements, which are superb – quite different than the more famous vocal versions you've probably heard ad infinitum, and recorded at a level that brings a whole new magic and majesty to 60s pop! CTI, 1974. Used ... $4.99
A great return to form for Chet Baker – his first record in a number of years away from the studio, and proof that his genius could adapt to just about any setting! The album's got a tight focus that's probably one of the keys to its success – a set of arrangements by Don Sebesky that mix lusher moments with some more tightly snapping rhythms – a blend that allows Chet to display the full range of his talents without veering too far in one direction. Paul Desmond plays some great alto on the record, really bringing in a strong sense of crispness to a few numbers – and instrumentation also includes great electric piano from Bob James, vibes from Dave Friedman, and flute from Hubert Laws. Baker sings on a few numbers, and titles include "Autumn Leaves", "She Was Too Good To Me", "Funk In Deep Freeze", "Tangerine", "With A Song In My Heart", "What'll I Do", and "It's You Or No One". A great summation of the Gato Barbieri recordings for the Flying Dutchman label – and a set that includes a key new composition too! Some of the record features older Barbieri tracks for Flying Dutchman, but the highlight here is the extended 13-minute suite, "El Gato" – a wonderful number composed by Oliver Nelson, and done with a soaring, spiritual vibe that's a wonderful summation of his genius at the time – that Pharoah Sanders way of blowing in really long, searching solos, but never going too outside. Other tracks are great – and all have a nice Latin current – and feature work from Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Mtume on drums, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Airto on percussion – on titles that include "El Parana", "Merceditas", and "Ninos". RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin America series for that other label, but still there in the conception – and Gato blows with that sharp, soulful, spiritual tone that we love so much from this period – so different than the later sound of his smoother records. Lonnie Liston Smith is on piano in the group – getting pretty outside at times, as on his work with Pharoah Sanders – and the combo also features lots of great percussion from Airto and Mtume, too. All tracks are nice and long, and very searching – and titles include "El Parana", "Antonico", "El Sertao", and "Maria Domingas". CD

Later work from swing sax giant Charlie Barnet – but every bit as tight as his classics! Don't be put off by the silly cover image of Charlie in an Indian head dress – as the costume's only a reference to Barnet's big hit "Cherokee", and doesn't imply any sort of cheesy musical gimmick on the set. And in fact, if anything, the style here is even more sophisticated than before – as the Barnet groove is updated with some nice 50s arrangements from Billy May, Bill Holman, and Andy Gibson. Ray Barretto's not looking too "irresistible" on the cover of this one – thanks to a too-white costume and sock-less espadrilles – but the record's still a great one, with a nicely jazzy vibe throughout! The album was Ray's last for Fania, but it's by no means a contract-filler – as Barretto keeps the group in tight formation as they make their way through a trumpet-heavy batch of tunes that only uses a bit of electric instrumentation from time to time. Vocals are by Carlos Torres, and most of the arrangements are by Ricky Gonzalez, who also plays keyboards and piano on the set. Tracks include a great remake of "Night In Tunisia", plus "Aguadilla", "Cancion Para El Nino", "Llamame", "Amo La Noche", and "Eras". LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin BirdsongEdwin Birdsong (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A breakout solo moment from the great Edwin Birdsong – an artist who participated in some of Roy Ayers great albums of the 70s, and who cut some great underground records of his own – but who finally got the chance to step into the limelight on this set for Philadelphia International! Birdsong's always been his own man – one of the quirkiest funk artists you'll ever find – and the set's got a very different vibe than anything else from the Gamble & Huff house of hits – mostly because Edwin produced and arranged the whole thing on his own. There's a few slight Roy Ayers touches at times – we sometimes think of Edwin as the Bootsy to Roy's George Clinton – and the rhythms have a nicely romping groove that's more Bohannon than the usual disco tracks. There's also some mellower numbers – like the great "Autumn Eyes" and "Lollipop (Slow)", both of which have a mellow Ayers steppin' groove – and other more upbeat titles include"Cola Bottle Baby", "Phiss Phizz", "Kunta Dance", "Goldmine", and "Freaky Deaky Sities". CD features lots of 12" single bonus tracks – "Phiss Phizz (12" disco)", "Lollipop (12" disco)", "Goldmine (12" disco)", "Freaky Deaky Sities (12" disco)", and "Kunta Dance (part 1)". CD

Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! David BowieSpace Oddity ... LP
RCA, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Modern Hammond hero Brian Charette gets some great help here – tenor legend George Coleman, whose presence in the group makes an already-solid combo really sound great! Coleman was never a tenor player to work with an organ back in the 60s and 70s – but his work here is really wonderful, and turns that depth of soul that he can bring from the horn into a perfect match with Charette's great sense of phrasing and timing on the Hammond B3 – a pairing that might recall the match of either Booker Ervin or Sonny Stitt with organist Don Patterson back in the Prestige Records heyday. As with those sessions, there's also a great guitarist providing a whole new layer of color here – the mighty Vic Juris – and drums on the set are handled by George Coleman Jr. Titles include "Autumn Leaves", "Stella By Starlight", "On A Misty Night", "Never Let Me Go", "Father & Son", and "Maiden Voyage". Willie Colon helps Ismael Miranda get a new sense of energy in his music – backing the vocalist here with a tight set of salsa backings that are every bit the best Colon sound of the late 70s! The arrangers here are varied – and include Luis Cruz, Marty Sheller, and Luis Garcia – but there still a relatively unified feel to the record, even when the style shifts a bit – thanks vocals by Ismael that are strong and often emotive, but never in a way that falls into cliche or overly-romantic moments. The track "Tumbao Caliente" steps out with a bit of boogie dancefloor funk, but other titles are more traditionally salsa – and titles include "Bandolera", "Cartas Muertas", "Biata", "Americano Latino", "Jibaro Castao", "No Me Digan Que Es Muy Tarde", and "Cuando Tu Quiera". Impulse, 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at another level, the album's got a great approach to Coltrane's gentler side, one that wasn't showing up on a lot of his Impulse albums of the time. Overall, the album's got an extremely haunting quality, and McCoy Tyner's piano adds as much to Hartman's hip voice as Coltrane's mellow tenor. Titles include some well-chosen moody standards – including "Lush Life", "Dedicated To You", and "Autumn Serenade". CD

✨✧ Como MamasMove Upstairs ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A second fantastic set from this Mississippi gospel trio – and one that mixes their heavenly vocals with a bit of Daptone Records funk! The set's produced by Bosco Mann, who also plays bass in the quartet that backs up the singers – and the groove is raw and gritty, with a vibe that almost makes you feel like you stumbled upon some unreleased master tapes from the 70s in the vaults of Excello Records! There's few folks we could ever trust to get a gospel funk record this right – and the use of the vocals is tremendous along with the grooves – really stepping out on cuts that include "Move Upstairs", "Out Of The Wilderness", "99 & A Half Won't Do", "I Can't Thank Him Enough", "He's Mine", and "So Good To Me". Norman ConnorsPassion ... CD
Capitol, 1988. Used ... $22.99
Late 80s – but Norman's still the king of the mellow soul groove! The album's got Connors working with his Starship Orchestra on a set of tunes that bubble forth with the same jazzy touches as in earlier years – showing a bit of the trace of their time in the group's silly costumes on the back cover, and the use of electric rhythms on a number of cuts – but more than making up for that with a soulful feel overall. Vocals are by Gabrielle Goodman and Spender Harrison – and Freddie Hubbard guest stars on one track. Titles include "Samba For Maria", "Welcome To My Life", "That's The Way Of The World", "I Am Your Melody", "Passion", and "Private Stock". CD

✨✧ Celia Cruz & Johnny PachecoCelia & Johnny (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vaya/Fania (France), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 22.98
A fantastic pairing of talents – one that seems to push each individual artist to a new high point in their career! By the time of the set, Johnny Pacheco was emerging as one of the strongest forces in 70s salsa – a crack percussionist whose instrumentation was driving on a younger generation of musicians with a new sense of pride and power – which made his music a beautiful fit for the richly expressive vocals of Celia Cruz! Cruz was no stranger to recording, but really seems to come across like a brand new talent here – really on fire, with a new sense of soul – taking flight in ways that really make the album a standout classic in the Fania catalog. The instrumentation is as wonderful as the vocals – and features some great work on tres by Charlie Rodriguez. Titles include the tasty groover "Quimbara", plus "Tengo El Idde", "Toro Mata", "El Tumbao Y Celia", and "Lo Tuyo Es Mental". LP, Vinyl record album

Sony (Japan), 1963. Used ... $9.99
A wonderful live set from the Seven Steps-era Miles group – with rhythm by Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – and tunes that are all in that transformative mode that really showed Miles hitting a new voice at the time! Tenorist George Coleman's playing with the group on the set – proving again that he's got a depth that few people ever seem to give him credit for – and that it wasn't just Wayne Shorter who made the 60s Davis quintet so great. Titles include "Autumn Leaves", "All Of You", "Walkin", and "Joshua". CD

Miles Davis with John Coltrane & Sonny StittIn Stockholm 1960 Complete (4CD set) ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1960. New Copy 4CD ... $38.99 51.98
The complete recordings of a legendary live cycle of shows in Stockholm from 1960 – material that was previously issued on two different 2LP sets during the album era, now brought together here with bonus tracks too! The first third of the set features incredible work from the team of Miles Davis and John Coltrane – working together in space that's very open, and far more exploratory than their studio work of the late 50s – maybe at a level that really shows the impact that Coltrane's growth was having on the solo approach of Davis! The key rhythm trio keeps things swinging – Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – which almost seems to allow the horn players even more freedom. The second two thirds of the set are equally striking, but in a very different way – as they feature the great Sonny Stitt, blowing both alto and tenor with Miles' group – a choice that's maybe a bit surprising, but equally wonderful too – a Stitt brings the sound maybe back to a bop core, but also seems to really get a chance to show off some of those modern currents that he had to soft-pedal on his albums for Roost. Titles with Coltrane include "So What", "On Green Dolphin Street", "All Blues/Theme", "Walkin/Theme", and "Fran Dance" – and titles with Stitt include "Autumn Leaves/Theme", "Walkin", "All Of You", "June Night", "Stardust", "Lover Man", "If I Were A Bell", "No Blues/Theme", "Softly As In A Mornin Sunrise", and "So What". Rick DeitrickGentle Wilderness (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Niodrara/Tompkins Square, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The only 70s album ever issued by guitarist Rick Deitrick – a set that was produced in a very small print run of copies – which were then sold at shows and in a few special record stores, and also left by Deitrick on woodland trails – in the hopes that hikers might stumble upon his music! That aspect of unusual distribution really fits the mood of the set – as Deitrick's never trying to push the acoustic guitar into any unnatural territory – and instead works within a familiar palette to create some very personal music – maybe the sorts of modes that graced the very earliest work by William Ackerman, who might be a kindred spirit to the sort of organic explorations that Rick's working through here. The album was recorded at a time when solo acoustic guitar had moved quite far beyond both folk and jazz – used in a wonderfully personal way on songs that include "Gentle Wilderness", "At Morning", "Missy Christa", "Jon's Song", "Deep Within The Forest Of The Heart", and "Crawdad Hole". Delta Rhythm BoysDelta Rhythm Boys In Sweden ... CD
Jubilee/Warner (Japan), 1955. New Copy ... $8.99
A very cool album from the Delta Rhythm Boys – one that has the vocal group working in Sweden, with great help from some of that scene's modern jazzmen at the time! There's a playful vibe to the record, and the modern currents of the musicians help break past some of the cliches that the vocal group could sometimes get packaged with – at a level that really allows them to take some chances with their interplay at times, and maybe make the record one of their best! Players include Arne Domnerus on alto, Rolf Berg on guitar, Bengt Arne Wallin on trumpet, and George Bjorklund on tenor – and arrangements from Gosta Theselius – on titles that include "Early Autumn", "It Had To Be You", "If I Knew Then", "Shadrak", "Midnight Sun", "Chloe", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Divine StylerDef Mask (with instrumentals) ... CD
Gamma Proforma (UK), 2014. Used ... $6.99
Divine Styler returns for him album in years and years – working the synths-stoked, lyrically-barbed, dystopian future funky sound he helped invent – and it's strong stuff! There's a cinematic vibe at play, with kind of a dark sci fi feel. Lyrically, he's doing solid job of getting that dystopian sci fi mood over as a whole, all the while delivering rhymes with contemporarily resonant paranoia (chem trails, genetic modification, etc) that makes it all the more effective. Includes "Carriers IQ", "Architectonic", "Zaxon", "As Seen Before", "Voight Kampff", "Incubation (Acceleration Shell)", "Pandorum (KDS)", "Images On A Screen", "As Seen Before" and "Invalid Stratum Don't Compute" feat Orko Eloheim – plus the instrumentals! Funky dancefloor material – with production by Norman Whitfield, and vocals by Yvonne "Taka Boom" Brumbach. The groove is somewhere near the vein of late Undisputed Truth – and although the group is wearing these silly costumes on the front the album's less disco than you might think – it's actually in more of a nicely bubbling synth funk style! Titles include "Shakedown", "The Force", "Dream Machine", "Living Too High", "Don't Walk Away", "All My Love" and "Simple Love Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Echoes Of The Past, 2017. New Copy ... $4.99
This issue's got a great look at Philly soul legends The Ethics – the group that featured the great Ron Tyson on vocals, and who gave us some excellent singles back in the day! Other articles look at New Jersey doo wop singer Joel Katz, of Autumns fame – and there's also a discussion with Lenny Dell, of the strangely-spelled Demensions, who recorded for Coral in the early 60s! There's a few other bits on rare singles too – always with the group focus that makes this magazine so unique! Magazine
