Wadada Leo SmithSolo – Reflections & Meditations On Monk ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith never fails to blow us away – and even though he's captured our ear with recent higher-concept projects or other group work, he sounds equally mindblowing here in a completely solo setting! As you'd guess from the title, the set's based around the musical vision of Thelonious Monk – territory not often explored on solo trumpet, and handled beautifully here by Smith – both on his long extrapolations based on Monk's compositions, and on his own tunes dedicated to Monk – which are these bold, brilliant paintings in sound that the legendary pianist would have been proud to hear. We're not sure what's in the water over at Smith's house, but he's really had this amazing blossom of fresh creativity in recent years – as you'll hear on his compositions here, entitled "Monk & His Five Point Ring At The Five Spot Cafe", "Monk & Bud Powell At Shea Stadium", and "Adagio Monkishness – A Cinematic Vision Of Monk Playing Solo" – alongside versions of Monk tunes that include "Ruby My Dear", "Reflections", "Round Midnight", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithNajwa ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wadada Leo Smith is really on fire here – on a record that feels a lot more like something from the early 80s underground than some of his earlier work – from the lineup of performers, right down to the overall sound of the set! The group's very heavy on guitars – and features work from Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, Brandon Ross, and Lamar Smith on the instrument – often criss-crossing and weaving these beautiful sonic textures – powerful, but never too noisy, and augmented beautifully by some surprisingly thoughtful bass work by Bill Laswell – whose at his most subtle and collaborative here. The rest of the lineup features Pheeroan AkLaff on drums and Adam Rudolph on piano – and Wadada's trumpet really soars to the skies on the longer tracks, which include "Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Sonic Hierographic Forms – A Resonance Change In The Millenium", "Ronald Shannon Jackson – The Master Of Symphonic Drumming & Multi-Sonic Rhythms Inscriptions Of A Rare Beauty", and "Ohnedaruth John Coltrane – The Master Of Kosmic Music & His Spirituality In A Love Supreme". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithGreat Lakes Suite ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2015. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith works here with a hell of a lineup – Henry Threadgill on alto and flutes, John Lindberg on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all soaring free on a double-length set of work dedicated to the great lakes! Despite the "suite" in the title, the work feels very loose and free – much more improvised than compositional – which is an especially nice setting for the reedwork of Threadgill, who somehow seems even more expressive than usual. DeJohnette is great too – and the album's a great reminder that he can still play with a hell of an edge, but in ways that also can have the soulfulness of his roots – and maybe not some of the more "arch" styles of some of his other recent work. Smith adds an extra lake to the lineup for the recording – and titles include "Lake Michigan", "Lake Ontario", "Lake Superior", "Lake Huron", "Lake Erie", and "Lake St Clair". CD

Ahmed Abdullah's Ebonic TonesTara's Song ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2005. Used ... $11.99
Really exciting, invigorating, energetic stuff from Ahmed Abdullah's Ebonic Tones – the veteran NY jazz trumpeter and his impeccable group – featuring jazz violin legend Billy Bang, baritone sax player Alex Harding, bass player Alex Blake and drummer Andrei Strobert. The group brings an exhuberent passion to material by Ornette Coleman, Gigi Gryce, Frank Lowe, Thelonious Monk and a pair of Sun Ra numbers – with Ahmed having served the Arkestra, it's fitting for him to cover, but he sings on "Fate In A Pleasant Mood" and "Tapestry", lending a heartfelt touch. The title track and "The Cave" are sharp originals, and other titles include "Sans Souci", "Lonely Woman", "Nothing But Love" and "Blue Monk". CD

✨✧ VariousSing It High Sing It Low – Tumbleweed Records 1971 to 1973 ... CD
Tumbleweed/Light In The Attic, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really special sounds from a short-lived label – Tumbleweed Records, a company that was conceived in LA, and born in early 70s Denver – perfectly suited to focus on the hipper strands of singer/songwriter material of the time! The vibe here is a bit like the best work on the early Asylum Records, with maybe more of the diversity of Blue Thumb – and, like both of those special imprints, there's an above-the-usual level of quality going on here – great songwriting, understated production, and artists who really feel free to do their thing in the best way possible! Many of the tracks have kind of a homespun vibe, but top-shelf presentation – tight, but never slick – and the occasional twang really brings the right sort of humanity from time to time. Titles include "Turn Of The Century" and "Abyss" by Robb Kunkel, "Colorado" and "Hick" by Danny Holien, "Rosewood Bitters" by Michael Stanley, "Sweet As Spring" and "Do On My Feet" by Dewey Terry, "Late Letter" by Pete McCabe, "Plain Talk" by Arthur Gee, and "Sunday Sherry" by Arthur Gee Whizz Band. Great Jazz TrioAutumn Leaves ... CD
441/Eighty Eights, 2002. Used ... $8.99
Wonderful work from the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones – a lineup that's changed a bit from the classic 70s incarnation of the group, but which still has Hank working very much at the the height of his lyrical powers! This excellently-recorded set is a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese-based Eighty Eights label – a return to the simple elegance of some of the best Japanese-recorded sessions of the 70s, ones that take American players, and present them in uncluttered, straight ahead brilliance. Titles include "Blue Bossa", "Six & Four", "Summertime", "Yesterdays", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Amartey HedzolehKukurantumi ... LP
Chop Time (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Excellent solo work from Amartey Hedzoleh – a key member of the important Afro Funk combos Psychedelic Aliens and Hedzoleh Sounds – heard here in a set of previously-unreleased tracks from the early 80s! The music is quite rootsy all the way through – with Hedzoleh on vocals and a host of different instruments that include guitar, kalimba, gonje, and jiri – spun out over percussion that's sewn together in tightly rhythmic grooves by some great bass and guitar – often moving at a speed that's pretty intense! The sound is very unique – earthy and almost ethnographic, but with all the rhythmic appeal of studio grooves from the time – and titles include "Pe Pe", "Abonsa Iye Woye", "Abena At Rest House", "Hie Hie Woyaa", "Serious", and "Tontro". Manhattan Jazz QuintetAutumn Leaves ... CD
King/Paddle Wheel/Pro Jazz, 1985. Used ... $13.99
A standard-setting record from the Manhattan Jazz Quintet – that strong return to acoustic modes that made the combo such a breath of fresh air in the 80s – at a time when so few jazz groups were content to just focus on doing their thing! The head genius here is pianist David Matthews – whose arrangements are as dynamic as you'd hear for a large ensemble, yet performed with razor-sharp energy by Lew Soloff on trumpet, George Young on tenor, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums – all players who get plenty of individual moments in the spotlight on the album's longer tracks. Titles include "Jordu", "Recado Bossa Nova", "Mood Piece", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

John MartynTumbler (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.98
A record that's hard to do justice in words – as it's so unusual, so individual, it still stands as one of the best moments of John Martyn's career! Sure, the guy came from folk music, and works here on acoustic guitar alongside his vocals – and sure, he was part of a groundbreaking, free-thinking generation of post-folkies that also included Nick Drake and Donovan – but like those two important contemporaries, there's a sound here that goes beyond easy style or summation – a fantastically fresh approach that's still maybe the best place to open people's eyes to Martyn's genius, even after all these years. The songs are relatively spare – which is great, because the wonderful Harold McNair provides plenty of flute lines throughout – with just a bit of accompaniment from Paul Wheeler on second guitar and Dave Moses on bass – all produced very thoughtfully by the young Al Stewart. Most tunes are originals by Martyn – and titles include "The Gardeners", "A Day At The Sea", "Dusty", "Winding Boy"," Hello Train", "Fly On Home", and "The River". LP, Vinyl record album

Al McKibbonTumbao Para Los Congueros Di Mi Vida ... CD
Blue Lady, 1999. Used ... $11.99
A great set from Al McKibbon – Cal Tjader's bassist on a number of classic 60s recordings, and a player who's gone onto become a key force in west coast Latin Jazz! The set's got a no-nonsense jazz-based approach that would have made Cal proud – with McKibbon stepping out in full, round, proud basslines – to lead a group that includes Justo Almario on soprano sax, Charles Owen on flute and tenor, and Phil Wright on piano – all working together in a warm and soulful mode that's very much in the best spirit of the west coast Latin scene. Titles include "Estate", "Off Minor", "I Mean You", "Tumbao Para Los Congueros", and "Cubano Chant". CD

Layers of sound from this mighty heavy trio – saxophonist Jorgen Mathisen, bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen, and drummer Andreas Wildhagen! Side one features the blistering "Momentum" – a tune that's awash in these sheets of notes and textures from Jorgen on tenor – with maybe a bit of a break in the middle for the bass, before Mathisen then takes on a more pointed, spiritual journey on his horn! Side two features three shorter tracks – "Gaining", "Maintaining", and "Snake Ballad" – which have even more abstract sonic expression from the group! LP, Vinyl record album

MtumePrime Time – The Epic Anthology ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99
James Mtume is an artist with deep roots in jazz – including some excellent spiritual jazz material in the early 70s – but here, he's hitting superstardom in the soul music world – by pairing up with Reggie Lucas for a great run of music from the Mtume group! Lucas also hails from jazz – Mtume met him when they were both working with Miles Davis – and both artists bring something really special to their sound that moves it away from simple commercial soul – a bit like the depth that lays behind Earth Wind & Fire, who have similar righteous roots, but are able to fuse a wonderfully smooth, groovy sound – and there's also a similarity to the late 70s material of Norman Connors, another artist who followed a similar path. This set spans the full run of excellent recordings Mtume did for the Epic label – almost a decade's worth of music, including some other mixes, and a few side projects with singer Tawatha. Titles include "Just Funnin", "Anticipatin", "Mrs Sippi", "Love Lock", "Closer To The End", "Funky Constellation", "The After 6 Mix (Juicy Fruit part 2)", "You Me & He (polygamy mix)", "COD", "Prime Time", "We're Gonna Make It This Time", "The Closer I Get To You", "Kiss This World Goodbye", "It's Non-Functional", "Body & Soul", "Breathless (A&G mix)", "Did I Dream You", and "Would You Like To Fool Around". An unusual Jimmy Raney album from the 70s – recorded for MPS, with some very hip rhythm backing from Richard Davis on bass and Alan Dawson on drums!
