✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithNajwa ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wadada Leo Smith is really on fire here – on a record that feels a lot more like something from the early 80s underground than some of his earlier work – from the lineup of performers, right down to the overall sound of the set! The group's very heavy on guitars – and features work from Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, Brandon Ross, and Lamar Smith on the instrument – often criss-crossing and weaving these beautiful sonic textures – powerful, but never too noisy, and augmented beautifully by some surprisingly thoughtful bass work by Bill Laswell – whose at his most subtle and collaborative here. The rest of the lineup features Pheeroan AkLaff on drums and Adam Rudolph on piano – and Wadada's trumpet really soars to the skies on the longer tracks, which include "Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Sonic Hierographic Forms – A Resonance Change In The Millenium", "Ronald Shannon Jackson – The Master Of Symphonic Drumming & Multi-Sonic Rhythms Inscriptions Of A Rare Beauty", and "Ohnedaruth John Coltrane – The Master Of Kosmic Music & His Spirituality In A Love Supreme". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithSolo – Reflections & Meditations On Monk ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith never fails to blow us away – and even though he's captured our ear with recent higher-concept projects or other group work, he sounds equally mindblowing here in a completely solo setting! As you'd guess from the title, the set's based around the musical vision of Thelonious Monk – territory not often explored on solo trumpet, and handled beautifully here by Smith – both on his long extrapolations based on Monk's compositions, and on his own tunes dedicated to Monk – which are these bold, brilliant paintings in sound that the legendary pianist would have been proud to hear. We're not sure what's in the water over at Smith's house, but he's really had this amazing blossom of fresh creativity in recent years – as you'll hear on his compositions here, entitled "Monk & His Five Point Ring At The Five Spot Cafe", "Monk & Bud Powell At Shea Stadium", and "Adagio Monkishness – A Cinematic Vision Of Monk Playing Solo" – alongside versions of Monk tunes that include "Ruby My Dear", "Reflections", "Round Midnight", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithGreat Lakes Suite ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2015. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith works here with a hell of a lineup – Henry Threadgill on alto and flutes, John Lindberg on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all soaring free on a double-length set of work dedicated to the great lakes! Despite the "suite" in the title, the work feels very loose and free – much more improvised than compositional – which is an especially nice setting for the reedwork of Threadgill, who somehow seems even more expressive than usual. DeJohnette is great too – and the album's a great reminder that he can still play with a hell of an edge, but in ways that also can have the soulfulness of his roots – and maybe not some of the more "arch" styles of some of his other recent work. Smith adds an extra lake to the lineup for the recording – and titles include "Lake Michigan", "Lake Ontario", "Lake Superior", "Lake Huron", "Lake Erie", and "Lake St Clair". CD

✨✧ VariousSing It High Sing It Low – Tumbleweed Records 1971 to 1973 ... CD
Tumbleweed/Light In The Attic, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really special sounds from a short-lived label – Tumbleweed Records, a company that was conceived in LA, and born in early 70s Denver – perfectly suited to focus on the hipper strands of singer/songwriter material of the time! The vibe here is a bit like the best work on the early Asylum Records, with maybe more of the diversity of Blue Thumb – and, like both of those special imprints, there's an above-the-usual level of quality going on here – great songwriting, understated production, and artists who really feel free to do their thing in the best way possible! Many of the tracks have kind of a homespun vibe, but top-shelf presentation – tight, but never slick – and the occasional twang really brings the right sort of humanity from time to time. Titles include "Turn Of The Century" and "Abyss" by Robb Kunkel, "Colorado" and "Hick" by Danny Holien, "Rosewood Bitters" by Michael Stanley, "Sweet As Spring" and "Do On My Feet" by Dewey Terry, "Late Letter" by Pete McCabe, "Plain Talk" by Arthur Gee, and "Sunday Sherry" by Arthur Gee Whizz Band. Carmelo Bernaola/Alfonso SantistebanEl Espanto Surge De La Tumba (Horror Rises From The Tomb)/El Asesino Esta Entre Los 13 (The Killer Is One Of Thirteen) ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1973/1976. New Copy ... $19.99
Two spooky Spanish soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is music from Horror Rises From The Tomb – sounds that often feature a very weird, often watery organ line – of the sort you'd imagine some creepy guy playing in order to get ghouls to rise from their grave – with a sound that's almost suspended in air, and done with lots of cool, echoey elements around the edges! There's a nice sense of tension, but in a way that's really different than American horror from the generation before – maybe touched by some of the new sense of sound that Italians brought to the genre in their music – and the CD features 13 tracks from the film. Next up is Alfonso Santisteban's great music for The Killer Is One of 13 – sounds that, like some of his other horror work, might be more at home in an Italian romantic film – thanks to great use of woodwinds and gentle grooves! CD only features 4 tracks, but they're all pretty great – and titles include "La Fuga", "Supercelestial", "Con Una Suave Nostalgia", and "En Busca Del Tiempo Perdido". CD

Great Jazz TrioAutumn Leaves ... CD
441/Eighty Eights, 2002. Used ... $8.99
Wonderful work from the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones – a lineup that's changed a bit from the classic 70s incarnation of the group, but which still has Hank working very much at the the height of his lyrical powers! This excellently-recorded set is a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese-based Eighty Eights label – a return to the simple elegance of some of the best Japanese-recorded sessions of the 70s, ones that take American players, and present them in uncluttered, straight ahead brilliance. Titles include "Blue Bossa", "Six & Four", "Summertime", "Yesterdays", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Amartey HedzolehKukurantumi ... LP
Chop Time (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Excellent solo work from Amartey Hedzoleh – a key member of the important Afro Funk combos Psychedelic Aliens and Hedzoleh Sounds – heard here in a set of previously-unreleased tracks from the early 80s! The music is quite rootsy all the way through – with Hedzoleh on vocals and a host of different instruments that include guitar, kalimba, gonje, and jiri – spun out over percussion that's sewn together in tightly rhythmic grooves by some great bass and guitar – often moving at a speed that's pretty intense! The sound is very unique – earthy and almost ethnographic, but with all the rhythmic appeal of studio grooves from the time – and titles include "Pe Pe", "Abonsa Iye Woye", "Abena At Rest House", "Hie Hie Woyaa", "Serious", and "Tontro". ✨✧ Sherman Irby & MomentumCerulean Canvas ... CD
Black Warrior, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Maybe the greatest album we've ever heard from saxophonist Sherman Irby – and that's saying a lot, because he's given us some really fantastic records over the years! Yet while those albums were always graced with Irby's wonderful tone and phrasing on alto sax, this set seems to showcase an even grander musical vision, and portray him as a leader with deep currents of soul and sophistication! Irby's been playing a lot with the Jazz At Lincoln Center orchestra – so that may be part of the shift here – but the music is all still very much his own, just maybe amped up even more than before – and delivered by a wonderful group that features Eric Reed on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – along with guest work from Vincent Garnder and Elliot Mason on trombone, and performances by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis on two tracks. Reed is especially wonderful – pulling out these dark tones that really deepen the sound of the songs, especially when Irby's taking off on one of his amazing alto flights. Titles include "Racine", "Contemplation", "Smile Please", "Sybad", "Willie's Beat", "Blue Twirl", and "Blues For Poppa Reed". CD

✨✧ Gap MangioneDiana In The Autumn Wind ... CD
Josh Music, 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
A totally great little album from Gap Mangione – the lesser-known brother of Chuck! The difference between Gap and Chuck was that Gap was always hipper, cooler, and a bit funkier – as you'll hear in this excellent debut LP from 1968! Gap's working here in some amazing territory – taking styles of jazz from 60s soundtracks, and working them into a slightly electrified context that makes for some really cool grooves. Tracks are short, but complicated – with rhythms by a young Tony Levin on bass and Steve Gadd on drums – and lots of piano, organ, and electric piano from Gap! There's a few moments on here that you'll recognize from famous hip hop samples – but even more than those, the album's wonderfully solid overall – a unique jazz vision from the late 60s, and the kind of set that should have had Gap beating out his flugelhorn-playing brother! Titles include "The XI Commandment", "Dream On Little Dreamer", "Long Hair Soulful", "Diana In The Autumn Wind", "Boys With Toys", "Pond With Swans", and "Graduate Medley". CD

Jorgen Mathisen/Christian Meaas Svendsen/Andreas WMomentum ... LP
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2016. New Copy ... $14.99
Layers of sound from this mighty heavy trio – saxophonist Jorgen Mathisen, bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen, and drummer Andreas Wildhagen! Side one features the blistering "Momentum" – a tune that's awash in these sheets of notes and textures from Jorgen on tenor – with maybe a bit of a break in the middle for the bass, before Mathisen then takes on a more pointed, spiritual journey on his horn! Side two features three shorter tracks – "Gaining", "Maintaining", and "Snake Ballad" – which have even more abstract sonic expression from the group! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MtumeJuicy Fruit ... LP
Epic, 1983. Very Good ... $9.99
Sweet funky work from Mtume – a set that's nicely heavy on the keyboards, and which really set a new standard in 80s groove at the time! The keyboards are great, and the basslines are too – and Mtume's jazz roots are still nicely in place here – bringing a bit more sophistication to the tunes than some of his contemporaries, and keeping things catchy and swinging throughout. The set's one of the mighty Mtume/Lucas productions of the time – and titles include the groovy "Juicy Fruit", plus "Hips", "Would You Like To Fool Around", "Green Light", "Hip Dip Skippedabeat", and "Ready For Your Love".
