A well-done collection of images from the second world war – editorial cartoons that address the conflict in a variety of different ways – from the looming threat of war in the late 30s, through the actual years of combat that took up most of the first part of the 40s – into some materials that deal with the aftermath of the war as well! The book is in black and white throughout, and presents each cartoon with brief notes and sometimes a bit of translation – as the cartoons are from a variety of sources, US and UK, but other European territories as well – served up with a great array of very striking images that match the wit and politics of their themes. A great book that looks not just at the music of Sun Ra, but also the theory behind it – the special take on reality, and interstellar philosophy that made Ra as important a thinker as he was a musician! The music is approached from a theoretical framework that's extremely illuminating – especially if you only know some of the Arkestra records at face value, and not in the larger context of Sun Ra's ideas – and the author includes plenty of history to illuminate the ideas, but in ways that are nicely different than some of the previous books on the subject. The whole thing is a really great look at the transformative power of the music of Ra – that quality that's always made him far more than just another avant jazz musician, and instead a figure of inspiration and social change to decades of listeners who have followed his sound. A great way to dive into the world of city pop music from Japan – that big flowering of new sounds and fresh ideas that really marked a key creative moment on the scene from the early 70s onward – a huge legacy that's only getting appreciation in recent years by English-speaking audiences! This beautiful book presents listings for almost 700 albums in all – with a listing of key classics, then important records by some of the best artists – starting from the early years, and running up through the CD generation as well – with full color reproductions of all the albums featured in the book! The listings offer key information on each record – sometimes English, sometimes Japanese – along with a short review of each record too, in Japanese. You can mostly read the text using an app on your phone, such as Google Translate – but even just for the pictures, the book is a wonderful guide to the music – one that will really help you start digging for obscure gems from Japan! A great look at a format that was very near and dear to our hearts back in the day – especially in the pre-digital world, when the cassette tape was the easiest way to circulate music! As you can guess from the title, the author takes this topic and really runs with it – showing how the birth of the tape, home recording, and easy audio transfer allowed for the growth and circulation of lots of different music. The book is well-written, and has a vibe that really makes these years come alive – and the story doesn't stop with tapes and their use in the 21st Century, as the book traces the format well into the 21st Century – where cassettes have had a surprisingly durable resurgence. A pretty amazingly deep dive into the world of avant garde music in Japan – not just jazz or experimental sounds, but a range of different recordings – all presented in a style that's similar to other Japanese disc guides on music! The approach has each page listing one or two records – with black and white reproductions of the cover image, plus title, label, and a small Japanese language paragraph on the music – which you can try to read using a translate program. Unlike other disc guides of this nature, though, the approach is more Japanese overall – text is vertical, and most titles and artists are in Japanese characters – but again, you can likely use a Google translate program to read those with your phone. There is English here and there, and the album cover images certainly give you plenty to start digging – as does the approach of the book, which does provide some structuring that groups the records together. The Japanese city pop movement really got going at the start of the 80s, when vinyl and cassette were still king and queen – but it kept on going even after formats shifted – at a level that makes this book such a key document of the scene and style, which is often just tied to the vinyl market. As with other Japanese disc guides, the bulk of the text is in Japanese – which can now easily be read using Google Translate on your phone – but the book has entries for hundreds of titles, each with a full color image of the cover – which will offer up plenty of information for your digging. The rest of the issue follows with more jazz-based articles and features – text in Japanese, but plenty of images in black and white – more than enough to entice you to dive into the world of jazz from a Japanese perspective. Compelling photographic portraits snapped during the pandemic – done at a distance, as most of the faces here were presented to the photographer via Facebook Messenger – but also given a very organic component, as the camera shot the images through a real-world filter – often a transparent object of glass, which creates all sorts of distortion in the image! The resulting photographs come across in a variety of modes – sometimes very abstract, some with a more shadowy, edgey kind of Berman-esque sort of vibe – dozens of images, presented in full color throughout.
