✨✧ Dexter GordonTower Of Power! ... LP
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Dexter Gordon certainly was a tower of power by this point – as his lengthy 60s stay in Europe helped him to work work work, and season his playing considerably – to a point at which he emerged as a masterful soloist far beyond the limits of his early bop recordings! This session features Dexter back with an American group – one that features Barry Harris on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums – plus a very welcome James Moody on tenor on one track, "Monmartre", blowing in that raspier tone of the late 60s we love so much! Other titles include "Stanley The Steamer", "The Rainbow People", and "Those Were The Days" – all nice and long! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tower Of PowerBump City ... CD
Warner, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tower Of Power move down to Memphis for the recording of this great second album – and almost pick up a bit of Stax Records vibe in the process! The Memphis location is a key hint to the groove going on down here – a sound that's steeped in southern elements, even though the group themselves hail from the Bay Area – carried off with a quality that's a wonderful blend of funky rhythms, jazzier horns, and even a bit of fuller touches from the Memphis Strings. Legendary guitarist Steve Cropper helps the group out a bit on the session – and the album's got a sweet southern funky groove that sits nicely with the Bay Area groove of the group. Titles include "You Got To Funkifize", "Flash In The Pan", "Down To The Nightclub", "You Strike My Main Nerve", and "Of The Earth". CD

✨✧ Tower Of PowerEast Bay Grease ... CD
Rhino, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first albums from Tower Of Power – and one of the funkiest, too – a set that really has the group working in a loose, spontaneous mode that's totally great – steeped in all the best elements of southern soul, but forged with a new sort of energy in the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s! The tracks are nice and long, but never overly jamming – and the album's the start of a great run of classics from the group, and is still one of our favorites from them over the years. Titles include "Back On The Streets Again", "Sparkling In The Sand", "The Skunk, The Goose, & The Fly", and "Social Lubrication". CD

Classic east bay grease from the early days – featuring the good lineup of T of P, with Chester Thompson on organ, and Lenny Williams on lead vocals. Titles include "Give Me The Proof", "I Believe In Myself", "Walkin Up Hip Street", "Maybe It'll Rub Off", and "Come Back Baby". CD

✨✧ Tower Of PowerUrban Renewal ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the best early albums from Tower Of Power – with kind of a funky choppy groove that feels like a San Francisco version of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, riffing away in a stoner funk mode that always sounds like it might go off slightly, but which always wobbles back on course. Lenny Williams sings lead vocals, and the tunes are a mix of "clever rabbit" type funk lyrics, plus others in the sweeter style that Williams would use on his own solo work. Titles include "It's Not The Crime", "Only So Much Oil In The Ground", "Give Me The Proof", "I Believe In Myself", "Walkin Up Hip Street", "Maybe It'll Rub Off", and "Come Back Baby". ✨✧ Les Baxter/Mike Curb/The 13th PowerWild In The Streets ... LP
Tower, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Hilarious! This is the soundtrack to a goofy late 60s shocker film about the time when hippies and young folks would take over America. Les Baxter handled the musical score for the film, but the real treat is the schlocky rock tracks – written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, with arrangements by Mike Curb in that fuzzy Tower/AIP mode! The lyrics are hysterical, but also oddly catchy, even though they're trying to make fun of 60s rock. Titles include "Psychedelic Senate", "Fourteen Or Fight", "Wild In The Streets", "Sally LeRoy", and "Free Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the Unipak cover, with an unglued top seam, light wear, and aging. Label on Side 1 has some squiggles in fluorescent paint.)

One of the best albums we've ever heard from this funky rock group – kind of a mix of styles by groups like Average White Band, Sweetwater, and Tower Of Power. The album features the great funk track "Without Love", which begins with a monster break that has a very dark Eric B kind of feel – plus tracks that include "Rainbow's End", "Geoff's Vibe", "Planet Ripper", "Marp", "Like To Get To Know You", and "All & Everything". Masayoshi TakanakaInsatiable High ... LP
Kitty/Universal (Japan), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $41.99 49.99 About August 7, 2024
A real gem from that key moment in Japanese fusion when some of the nation's best artists were hopping over to the American scene – cutting records like this, which often beat the American soul fusion scene at its own game – thanks to the help of a big array of all-star players! Masayoshi Takanaka plays guitar solos throughout, but also gets some help from Lee Ritenour on the electric strings – in a group that also has arrangements from Greg Adams of Tower Of Power, who brings in the rest of the TOP horns too – plus keyboards from Patrice Rushen, bass from Chuck Rainey, and drums from the great Harvey Mason – a rhythm combo that really keeps things groovy throughout. There's two vocal tracks on the set – which feature work from Jim Gilstrap, Maxi Anderson, and The Waters – on titles that include "Malibu", "ESP", "Sexy Dance", "Sundrops", "Good Bad Old Days", and the title track "Insatiable High". ✨✧ Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. Used ... $24.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". ✨✧ SantanaSantana III ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most searing, soaring albums ever from Santana – a set that takes all the power of the previous two records, and packs it into one tight little set! There's plenty of Latin influences going on – mixed with heavy fuzz from Carlos, and lots of jazz and funky touches too – way more happening on the rhythm tip than most of Santana's contemporaries – which is why the record continues to find such a wonderfully wide audience over the years. Drop cuts like "Batuka","Toussaint L'Overture", "Jungle Strut", or "Para Los Rumberos" next to tracks by War, Mandrill or Tower Of Power and you'll see what we mean – and titles also include "No One To Depend On","Taboo", "Guajira" and "Everything's Coming Our Way". ✨✧ Cream/Iron ButterflySavage Seven ... LP
Atco, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Typical biker movie fare – but this time around played by some more famous groups! The album was put together by Mike Curb – the guy who crafted so many knock-off groups for Tower and Sidewalk biker soundtracks – and truthfully, Mike doesn't produce the work on the album by the big stars. Cream do a nicely gentle jazzy number called "Anyone For Tennis", and the fuzzy instrumental "Desert Ride" – and Iron Butterfly perform "Iron Butterfly Theme" and "Unconscious Power", plus some other instrumentals that are more in keeping with work on other Curb soundtracks. Barbara Kelly & The Morning Good do the rest of the album – very much in that instrumental rock vein that you'd get on other Curb scores – running through a pretty nice mix of instrumental tunes that includes "Savage Struggle", "The Medal", "Here Comes The Fuzz", and "Shacktown Revenge". ✨✧ Lenny WhiteBig City ... LP
Nemperor, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great little album by Lenny White – nicely restrained in the best moments, with less of the heavy-hitting fusion sound that you'd hear on his other albums – and even done with a strong current of funk, which really sends the whole thing home in a great way! Space jazz maestro Pat Gleeson produced the album with Lenny – and also plays quite a bit of synth on the album – and we're convinced that it's Pat's subtler jazz talents that really make this one shine – those cool keyboards, and strong sense of balance that he brought to his own albums, and other productions of the time. Highlights include the spiritual soul number "Sweet Dreamer", with vocals by Linda Tillery and keyboards by Herbie Hancock – and the tight "Big City" groove, which features great contributions from both Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, and the Tower Of Power Horns. Other tracks include "The Ritual", "Rapid Transit", "And We Meet Again", "Enchanted Pool Suite", and "Ritmo Loco". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray GreeneStay ... CD
Ubuntu, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ray Greene was the vocalist in Tower of Power for a number of years, but with a record like this, it's clear that he's more than deserving to be out front on his own – as a soul singer with a range that lives up to some of the greats from years back, yet possessed of this very personal quality that really sets him apart from the rest! Greene sings here in a way that's free from some of the more standard modes or overdone cliches that could hold a record like this back – yet at the same time, he's also got a confidence and power that could easily push the record over the top – on titles that include "Tears Away", "Stay", "Jealous", "Tell Her", "Shoulda Known Better", "Hole In Our Hearts", and "Coming Home". If you're looking for a definition of dub, this album may well be it – and it's clear proof why Tubby could proudly wear the crown of a King! The set's beautifully bassy and muddy all the way through – a heady brew of bottom-level sounds – all layered wonderfully with lots and lots of echo – light guitar, bass, and drums tripping along with a sound that's as powerful today as it was back in the 70s! All tracks are instrumentals, and this LP version features 15 tracks in all – with cuts that include "Babylon Dub", "Send Me Dub", "In Love Dub", "Perfidia Dub", and "Soundtrack Dub". Truth & JaneyNo Rest For The Wicked ... LP
Montross/Lion, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
The towering Marshall amps on the cover will give you a good idea of what's going on here – as this heavy 70s combo really turn things up to 11 with their searing power trio style! The group recall earlier efforts from that moment when three-member rock groups really set fire to the new generation of hard rock – drawing plenty of inspiration from lean blues of vintage years, but amping things up with all the fuzz of the psychedelic years, while also proving that guitar, bass, and drums were more than enough to resonate with a hell of a lot of power! Yet the album's also got a different vibe than work from bigger early 70s acts – cut almost in obscurity, with no attempts at commerciality, which really keeps things hard and heavy – on tracks that include "My Mind", "Remember", "Down The Road I Go", "No Rest For The Wicked", "The Light", and "It's All Above Us". ✨✧ Elvin JonesRemembrance ... CD
MPS/Edel (Germany), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Elvin Jones towers above his bandmates on the cover of this 70s classic – and really leads them onward to some great sounds within! The record has a bit more focus and soul than some of Jones' other albums of the period – still quite powerful and dynamic, but with a good adherence to melody, and plenty of room for the group members to open up and make some beautiful sounds – including Pat LaBarbera and Michael Stuart on soprano and tenor sax, and Roland Prince on guitar! The twin reed players are wonderful – and work together in ways that are different than some of Elvin's records at the start of the 70s – and titles include "Kalima", "Section 8", "Giraffe", and "Familiar Ground". An amazing setting for the righteous words and message of Nikki Giovanni – as the set has the poet working with backing vocals by the New York Community Choir, who also recorded a great soul album on RCA around the same time – and an overall approach that elevates Nikki's poetry into a very spiritual realm! There's definitely some gospel currents to the music, but Givoanni's words and spoken passages have much more down to earth concerns – the mix of political and personal themes that made her one of the most important young black poets of her generation. The whole thing is fantastic – very powerful throughout, with titles that include "My Tower", "Poem For A Lady Of Leisure Now Retired", "Second Rapp Poem", "Great Pax Whitey", "Poem For Aretha", and "Ego Tripping". ✨✧ Townes Van ZandtFar Cry From Dead ... LP
Arista/Fat Possum, 1999. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The last album ever recorded by Townes Van Zandt – and a set that shows just how strong his talent was, right up until the end! The album came out two years after Townes passed away in 1997, and features core recordings of the legend on vocals and guitar, augmented by studio backings added to flesh out the sound of the material – yet done in a way that's very respectful to the spirit of the original tunes! The vocals are wonderful – maybe even more powerful at this point in Van Zandt's career than on some of the earlier recordings – and titles include a version of the great "Pancho & Lefty", which seems to have learned from the Merle Haggard/Willie Nelson version of Townes' classic – plus "Tower Song", "For The Sake Of The Song", "Waitin Round To Die", "Sanitarium Blues", "Greensboro Woman", "Dollar Bill Blues", and "To Live's To Fly". ✨✧ VariousSoul On The Real Side #14 ... CD
Outta Sight (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great entry in one of our favorite series for rare soul tracks these days – a really special sort of collection that brings together tracks with a vibe that's very much all its own! The set definitely serves up the "real side" that it promises in the title – tunes that aren't showy or full of fuss – and instead, these easygoing soul tracks that hit their mark, right from the start – then go long with tremendous staying power, and a sense of warmth that has us returning to the set again and again for repeated listenings! The choice of cuts is sublime – a few familiar numbers mixed with overlooked tracks from artists we know, but haven't heard from in this way before – served up on 20 tracks that include "Never Set Me Free" by Continental Showstoppers, "I'm Coming Home" by Gerald Taylor, "I Can Remember" by The Whispers, "I'd Believe Him" by Deniece Chandler, "What Does It Take" by The Electrifying Cashmeres, "If You Decide" by Bull & The Matadors, "Try Something New" by Eddie Billups, "When" by Joe Simon, "Lover Come Back" by Jackey Beavers, "Nobody But You" by Willie Hightower, "I Hate Hate" by Razzy Bailey, "Why Don't You Write" by Lee Bates, "Grooving With My Thing" by The DeVons, and "Smooth Sailing" by Three Shades Of Soul.
