ThundercatDrunk ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Fantastic work from one of the most compelling mainstream talents in recent years – an artist who can get wide fame and acclaim, yet keep on pushing the boundaries into fresh new cosmic territory! This album may well be Thundercat's masterpiece – not just a summation of all the ideas and areas he's explored in the past, but also kind of a re-filtering of other modes as well – including the more spiritual and jazz-based territory that he's moved towards, especially when working with others! Yet there's nothing here that's an easy copy of another style, or another's work – as the whole thing bristles with a personal newness that's wonderful – even when Thundercat is getting help from guests who include Kamasai Washington, Flying Lotus, Wiz Khalifa, Pharrell, and Kendrick Lamarr – as well as some especially nice work from AOR legends Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Titles include "I Am Crazy", "3AM", "Rabbot Ho", "Bus In These Streets", "Lava Lamp", "Jethro", "Show You The Way", "Drink Dat", "Jameel's Space Ride", and "Tokyo". CD

Ronald Bruner JrTriumph ... LP
World Galaxy/Alpha Pup, 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 25.98
A very well-titled album – given that the whole thing's a real triumph from Ronald Bruner Jr – who serves up some wonderful vocals alongside his work on drums – in a set that's got a swirlingly cosmic approach to soul! The album's overflowing with hip talents from the contemporary underground – with work from Thundercat on bass, Kamasai Washington on tenor, and even a bit of keyboards from the great George Duke – a lineup that really indicates the direction that Bruner is going for here – as he transforms contemporary soul with all the new energy from that scene too. And although his image on the cover might be tied to the streets, there's a more ambitious agenda taking place – as you'll hear on tracks that include "True Story", "Open The Gate", "Take The Time", "She'll Never Change", "Doesn't Matter", "One Night", "Sensation", "To You/For You", "Chick's Web", "Whenever", and "Geome Deome". Flying LotusYou're Dead! ... CD
Warp, 2014. Used ... $3.99
Flying Lotus is not only very much alive on You're Dead! – he's as lively as ever – delivering his best, most diverse record to date! The Flying Lotus sound is in peak form here – glitchy beats and spacey keyboards, deftly layered samples, and carrying boundless influences from cosmic soul jazz to leftfield hip hop! An impressive guest roster from both realms participate – with appearances by Herbie Hancock (!!!), Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, frequent collaborator and stylistic sibling Thundercat, strings arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson and others. Standout moments include the tracks "Tesla" and "Moment Of Hesitation", both with some incredible keyboards by Herbie Hancock, plus the uber-moody, Ennio Morricone-sampled "Turtles" – but the whole thing is great, and shows that the Flying Lotus phenomenon is still in ascension, circa 2014. Other cuts include "Cold Dead", "Never Catch Me" with Kendrick Lamar, "Dead Man's Tetris" with Snoop Dogg, "Turkey Dog Coma", "Stirring", "Obligatory Cadence", "The Protest" and more. CD

Cameron GravesPlanetary Prince ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Graves produced – which gives the record a very different feel than other Mack Avenue releases – and titles include "Isle Of Love", "The Lucifer Rebellion", "El Diablo", "Adam & Eve", "Planetary Prince", "The End Of Corporatism", and "Satania Our Solar System". I CedWhat Are We Looking For? (plus bonus track) ... CD
Move Next, 2016. New Copy ... $8.99 12.98
A stunner! If what you're looking for is the most personal and boldy creative I Ced effort to date, well, this is that and more – delivering boisterous modern funk beats and atmosphere underneath his soulful, spiritually-heightened vocals – probably his best ever! Those traits carry the vibe throughout, and leave plenty of room for adventurous stylistic exploration – from tight funk, to looser spacey soul and beyond. I Ced handles a lot of the vocal, instrumental and production work himself here, but there's an impressive guest list, too – including Om'Mas Keith, Thundercat, Jimetta Rose and others. Includes "What Are Looking For?", "Things We Like To Do", "Run Run", "Go Hard", "Wildest Dreams", "I Am Love" with Jimetta Rose and Erik Rico, "Forever", "Not A Farewell", "Sign Signed Signal" (plus a bonus alternate version with Quelle Chris, "Percu", "Baya" and more. Kendrick LamarDAMN. ... CD
Aftermath/Interscope, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
DAMN!, indeed – Kendrick has yet to take even a small step down from the creative peak he's been riding for years – and takes another daring step forward with this strong, strident, no-mess-taking classic in the making! The surprise-announced DAMN! finds him taking on timely concerns – some longtime inherent to everyday racial, social, and class struggles in American life, and others that are purely personal. The production is diverse to a degree, but a bit straight forward compared to the sprawling, years-in-the-making To Pimp A Butterfly – all by design, as DAMN! is clearly made to sound fresh and urgent right now. But like all great musical art, it's built to stand the test of time. Includes guest producers, musicians and vocalists as varied as Thundercat, U2, Kamasi Washington, Kid Capri and Rihanna. Titles include "BLOOD.", "DNA.", "YAH.", "ELEMENT.", "LOYALTY." feat Rihanna, "PRIDE.", "LUST." with strings arranged by Kamasi Washington, "XXX." feat U2, "FEAR.", "GOD." and "DUCKWORTH." CD

Kendrick LamarTo Pimp A Butterfly ... LP
Interscope, 2015. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
Kendrick Lamar takes wider creative left turns than ever before on To Pimp A Butterfly – with a funk steeped production style that filters tried-and-true P Funk influences through leftfield modern beatcraft styles, inspired by cats like Madlib to Thundercat, the latter of whom is an official contributor. Fresh material from an increasingly pivotal figure – who may not be revolutionizing the game on the level of the heavy critical praise he's heaped with, but he's certainly marching to his own beat, rather than chasing hits! Includes "Wesley's Theory" with George Clinton & Thundercat, "King Kunta", "These Walls" with Bilal, Anna Wise & Thundercat, "Aright", "For Sale?", "Institutionalized" with a Slick Rick-homage of a guest verse by Snoop Dogg (sign us up for any record that gives props to The Ruler...and extra points for transplanting that style of flow to Compton), "Momma", "Hood Politics", "The Blacker The Berry", "How Much A Dollar Cost" feat James Fauntleroy & Ronald Isley, "Mortal Man" and more. Terrace MartinVelvet Portraits ... CD
Ropeadope, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". Kamasi WashingtonEpic (3CD set) ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2015. New Copy 3 CDs ... $19.99 25.98
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". Young Turks, 2017. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. Washington composed, arranged, and even produced the record himself – and in some ways, the tightness of the performance makes the whole thing even more satisfying than Epic – as we hope you feel too, on titles that include "Desire", "Humility", "Truth", "Integrity", "Knowledge", and "Perspective". A fantastic young jazz singer, and one who really has her own style very firmly in place – one of those rare talents that comes along once in a blue moon, and makes us instantly sit up and go "wow", right after hearing just a few notes! Natasha Agrama is steeped in many of the best jazz traditions, but wraps them up all into a unique strand that instantly makes her music very special, and very personal – definitely jazz vocals at the core, but with lots of contemporary inflections and wonderful instrumentation – served up by a mix of classic and present talents who include Ronald Bruner on drums, Thundercat on bass, George Duke on Fender Rhodes, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Austin Peralta on piano and Rhodes. The set begins with a wonderful take on Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus", then rolls into a great update of Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", before taking on Bilal's "All Matter", and transforming older standards "Lover Man", "I Wonder What Became Of Me", and "In A Sentimental Mood". Brainfeeder, 2016. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bright blend of abstract electronics and leftfield jazz from Dutch experimentalist Mitchel Van Dinther, aka Jamezoo – and one more significant reminder that the Brainfeeder label is home to some of the best, most creative modern instrumental music of the past couple decades! After the Flying Lotus, Thundercat , Kamasi Washington and other Brainfeeder epiphanies, you could be forgiven for wondering if the label had peaked already, but Jameszoo belongs in that esteemed company – really! Synths and electronic errata are blended with a lot of different live instruments in unpredictable, definitely abstract, but oddly cohesive ways here that are unlike anything else exactly, but definitely in the universe of Flying Lotus the Brainfeeder camp. Cosmic electronics arranged with strings, percussion, horns, guitar and a wide range of other instruments, even occasional vocals, depending on the needs of the track at hand – and it's pretty amazing! Guests include Arthur Verocai and Steve Kuhn, which should give you a hint of how expansive the vibe is – and the titles include "Flake", "Lose", "Soup", "Flue" featuring guitar by Arthur Verocai, "Wrong", "Meat", "The Zoo" with Rhodes and vocals by Steve Kuhn, "Crumble", "Toots" and "Teeth".
