Jimmy RileyRydim Driven (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Taxi/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.98
Jimmy Riley's definitely rhythm-driven here – given that the set was issued on the Sly & Robbie label Taxi, and also produced by the heavy rhythm duo themselves! Yet Jimmy's also the main star too – singing here with righteous, uplifting vocals that are very much in the best Island Records mode from a few years before – which, combined with the strong backings on the set, should have made this album as much of a runaway classic as work by Peter Tosh or Jimmy Cliff! Titles include a lot of great remakes of American soul cuts – like "I Wish It Would Rain", "My Woman's Love", "You'll Lose A Precious Love", "The Choking Kind", "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", and "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" – plus original tunes "Give Me Your Love", "I Try", and "Delicious". (40th Anniversary pressing – on 180 gram vinyl!)

Annie PhilippeSensationnel! – Ye Ye Bonbons 1965 to 1968 ... LP
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
Beautifully groovy work from mid 60s France – all by a singer who's every bit as great as France Gall, Francoise Hardy, or other French greats of the time – but not nearly as well known! This cool collection should correct that fact, as it finally gives worldwide exposure to this brilliant material from Annie Philippe – a bold-voiced female singer whose delivery of the songs is superb throughout – augmented by early arrangements from the likes of Jean-Claude Vannier, Paul Mauriat, Christian Gaubert, and others! Almost all the numbers have a romping quality that lives up to the "ye ye" promise of the title – but there's also a vibe that's deeper than throwaway pop, as Philippe manages to bring a lot of punch to the tunes without ever losing her cool – as you'll hear on tunes that include "pas De Taxi", "Pour La Gloire", "Plus Rien", "C'Est La Mode", "On M'A Toujours Dit", "Sensational Jeffry", "J'Ai Rate Mon Bac", "Un Petite Croix", "Le Mannequin", "Bonjour Bonsoir Et Au Revoir", and "J'Ai Tant De Peine". Twilite ToneClearing ... LP
Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A really great Stones Throw debut from Twilite Tone – a Chicago beatmaker who's been one of our local heroes for years, and who finally gets the wider exposure he's deserved for way too long! Tone's done some big name work for Common, Kanye, and others – but here, he's very much at home inside his wonderful little shell – creating these endlessly creative sounds that really move past the obvious, and which showcase the kind of richer sonic palette we would have guessed from his record shopping habits over the years! There's a few 80s electro modes that come as a great surprise, mixed with harder core elements too – and there's occasional moments of sweetness, too – a emotional range that comes across nicely, on titles that include "N'Loveagain", "Tuff Love", "The Sound", "Do It Properly", "Taxi Cab Confessions", "The Lite", "Baby Steps", and "Ancestors & Angels". ✨✧ Your Old DroogTransportation (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Mongoloid Breaks, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A reliable ride all the way from Brooklyn's Your Old Droog – carrying on the tradition of classic 90s-hip hop inspired rhymecraft without leaning too hard on any particular influence that's on par with his best work to date! It's the second YOD to be released in just a couple of months and it's good thing he's delivering in such rapid succession, as he's really riding high on the lyricism – sans guests appearances (not including bonus tracks), so it's all him! Mono En Stereo handles the majority of the production and titles include "Stillwell Baby", "Monthly", "Loosey Spot On Wheels", "The Cheese", "My Plane", "SS YOD", "Train Love", "Bikes, Bleeps, Busses", "207" and more – plus the bonus tracks "Taxi" with Quelle Chris and "Vigilantes (Remix)" feat Wiki. VariousNuda – 21 Exciting Cuts From The Italian Sexy-Comedy Disco Scene 1975 to 1981 ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99
That's a sexy lady on the cover, and there's lots of sexy sounds within – music from a whole new generation of Italian soundtrack genius – a time when disco influences were being used to transform some of the groovy modes that always made Italian film scores so great! The disco styles here are mostly in the rhythms – as lots of the instrumentation follows in ways that reference early 70s Italian cop and crime – and, to a lesser extent, some of the mod and bossa styles of the late 60s – all handled by the cream of the crop of the Italian film world, mostly with an instrumental approach! The set list is great, and really brings together the best examples of the genres, and avoids some of the cheesy, clunky tunes that sometimes got in the way on larger soundtracks – which makes for a cool compilation that really packs one hell of a punch! Titles include "La Settimana Bianca" and "Classe Mista" by Gianni Ferrio, "Taxi Girl" by Pulsar Music Ltd, "Scusi Lei E Normale" by Franco Micalizzi, "La Sposina" by Nico Fidenco, "Sette Ragazze Di Classe" by Fabio Frizzi, "L'Insegnante Balla Con Tutta La Classe" by Walter Rizzati, "La Liceale" by Vittorio Pezzola, "La Professoressa Di Scienze Naturali" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Grazi Nonna" by Enrico Simonetti, and "L'Infermiera Di Mio Padre" by Giacomo Dell'Orso. ✨✧ VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vol 8 – Lord Kitchener In England 1948 to 1962 ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". ✨✧ Alexis ZoumbasAlexis Zoumbas ... LP
Orpheum/Mississippi, Late 20s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Astonishing work from Alexis Zoumbas – a Greek musician from the early days of the 78rpm recording, and one who plays violin with the dexterity of Paganini, but in ways that are much more rootsy and fokloric overall! Zoumbas' classic 78s have recently gotten new attention on an excellent compilation – but this set brings together unissued material from the same time – a huge undertaking, given that the recordings are almost 100 years old, but come through with a surprising amount of life here – as Alexis' deft solos on his instrument blend with a bit of percussion, piano, or other instrumentation – depending on the track – all with a timeless vibe that's expanded on nicely in the detailed booklet of notes and photos. Titles include "Selfo", "Arvanitikos", "Skizo Rizo Mor Panaghio", "Epirotiko Moiroloi", "Tsamiko Makedonias", and "Rast Taxim". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes 8 page booklet!)
