✨✧ Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". ✨✧ SystemSweat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mirage/FTG, 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The big breakout record for The System – one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own – and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn't need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single "You Are In My System" – a cut that's wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include "Sweat", "It's Passion", "Now I Am Electric", "Stand Up & Cheer", and "I Won't Let Go". This expanded version combines the original album with six bonus extended remixes – including "Promises Can Break", "This Is For You", and "Don't Disturb This Groove". CD

Fela & Egypt 80Underground System ... CD
Sterns, Late 80s/1998. Used ... $4.99
Late Fela – but great Fela! Underground System was released in 1992, but it sounds like Fela's best work from the late 70s – grooving away at a triple-time beat on two incredible tracks, "Underground System" and "Pansa Pansa". "Pansa Pansa" is especially great, as it's got these Cecil Taylor-esque piano lines over funky beats at the beginning – very odd, but very groovy! CD

Freedom Sounds featuring Wayne HendersonSoul Sound System ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! This set's a little more ambitious than the group's first album – with a number of tracks that groove in a very strong Latin jazz mode, sounding a lot like some of the best work on Atlantic at the time by Mongo Santamaria, Hubert Laws, and others. Henderson's trombone is still a key solo instrument, but the album also features some incredible sax work from Willie Gresham – a player we know little about, but who makes the album cook in the same fantastic way that Hubert Laws and Sonny Fortune did for Mongo's best work of the 60s! The grooves are very right-on, with plenty of excellent percussion work – and titles include the originals "Love-Out", "Behold The Day", and "Soul Sound System", plus some groovy covers, like "All You Need is Love", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "Are You Sure?" – all done with a great Latiny groove! Columbia, 1984. Very Good+ ... $4.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". Peter SchillingError In The System (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Big Break (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $9.99
An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". CD features 18 more bonus tracks – a few mixes of "Major Tom", plus German cuts "Ich Hab Keine Lust", "Die Wuste Lebt", "Fast Alles Konstruiert", "Dawn Trugt Der Schein", and "Fehler Im System". CD

✨✧ Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Everest/Modern Harmonic, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 36.98
A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage – featuring him with David Tudor weaving an eclectic mix sounds on a sound system – recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA! The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are even decades later – it's almost hard to believe this wildly ambitious freeform kind of music is a product of the mid 60s! A sweet little J Dilla themed turntable – an official release of the James Yancey estate – and not only is it very nice looking, it's fully portable, and reasonably priced to boot! The Dilla Turntable is made especially for portable use – it folds into a sturdy mini-suitcase – but it would work as an affordable, entry-level standalone turntable, too. It's got a platter that's a little bit bigger than a 45, but will equally spin 10" and 12" vinyl with the lid open – it's in fact a 3-speed player, spinning at 33, 45, and 78rpms. Comes with built-in stereo speakers but has an RCA output if you'd like to plug it into a bigger stereo system, a 1.8" headphone jack, a USB output so you can record music directly into your computer (a transcription software disc is included in the package), a 45 adaptor, and even a replacement stylus! Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". Orrin Evans#Knowingishalfthebattle ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
The first track here almost made us think we had the wrong record in the sound system – as it's a creative electronic piece that introduces the straighter jazz numbers – but that sonic surprise is just another great reminder of the ever-growing range of expression we've come to experience from pianist Orrin Evans! Evans has always been great, but in recent years he really seems to have expanded his musical idiom – and here, he's working with an unusual group that features two guitarists – Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kevin Eubanks – who don't play on every track, or together at once, but who create these chromatic elements that are beautiful alongside Orrin's more angular piano lines! The core trio has Evans on both acoustic and Fender Rhodes, with Luques Curtis on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums – and as the tracks move on, they draw contributions from both guitarists, plus saxophonist Caleb Curtis, and singer M'Balia – whose performances include a fantastic version of the David Bowie tune "Kooks", and "That's All". Other tracks include "Calls", "When Jen Came In", "Chiara", "You Don't Need A License To Drive", "Half The Battle", and "Doc's Holiday". CD

Fela & Africa 70Ikoyi Blindness/No Buredi ... CD
Victor (Japan), Mid 70s. Used ... $13.99
2 Fela classics – back to back on one CD! Fela and Africa 70 are honed to razor-sharp perfection on Ikoyi Blindness – with some incredible work on tenor sax on the title track "Ikoyi Blindness" – and some really righteous politics on "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs! No Buredi was issued in the US as Unnecessary Begging – but is presented here in its original format. The track "Unnecessary Begging" takes up all of side one, and it begins with this amazingly spooky sax solo that starts out spare, then snakes through the building rhythm lines laid down by Tony Allen. "No Burudei" is on side two, and it's a pumped-up groover with fast guitar and bass, rolling along in a classic Africa 70 groove, while the rest of the band slowly joins into the fray! CD

Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". FM3, New Item ... About January 20, 2017 (delayed)
An amazing version of this ultra-cool item – the legendary Buddha Machine, which has been around for many years in a number of incarnations – but may well have found the perfect expression in the music of Philip Glass! The original Buddha box was a small transistor radio-like object that contained sound samples to aid in meditation – mostly chants and tones that were minimal, and would repeat. Yet this version features some beautiful musical lines from the works of composer Philip Glass – piano passages mostly, but with some organ and vocal bits too – all with a warmth and sense of color that other boxes never had. And there's also something very special about the presentation – extremely minimal, even in the sonic range that comes from the small speaker – which is a very different think than listening to the music of Glass through a full stereo system – much more organic and spatially relevant! Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. Sure, it's not McDuff's funkiest record – but this is an excellent batch of smooth soulful tunes that show that McDuff was perfect in just about any setting! The core group on the set is Jack's Heatin' System ensemble – with Joe Farrell on saxes and Phil Upchurch on guitar – but they're augmented by some cool spacey fusion arrangements that sort of feel like late 70s slick jazz sides for Mercury or Columbia. The style works great with McDuff's keyboards – and were the record pushed at a better level, it would have put Jack up there with some of the smooth jazz stars of the 70s. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A wonderful collection of work from the always-great Momus – one of our favorite singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, a talent who really moves forward territory inspired by the work of Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, and George Brassens – and an artist who's given us so much incredible music during his career! The set really does a great job of spanning Momus' full career – from the acoustic start of his early Cherry Red albums and singles, to the open stylistic space of his music for Creation Records – where he shifted his ear for a catchy tune and sinister storyline into some really wonderful tracks – back to his return to Cherry Red and then formation of his own label – where he's continued to explore a fantastic array of topics with his undeniable wit. And in case you're wondering – the "public intellectual" title is a bit of a joke, taken from his classic "I Was A Maoist Intellectual" track from the 80s – but it's also somewhat fitting, given the incredible depth of his songwriting (although sadly, Momus has never hit the fame he deserves – which would make him a true public intellectual.) There's so many wonderful tracks on this set, we can't even count them all – and the collection's especially great for presenting some of the later Creation material that's been very hard to get in recent years. 3CD set features a whopping 56 tracks in all – plus notes on the tunes by Momus himself – and titles that include "Spacewalk", "Enlightenment", "The Ephephobe", "Paper Wraps Rock", "Flame Into Being", "The Homosexual", "How Do You Find My Sister", "Shaftesbury Avenue", "Summer Holiday 1999", "Ventriloquists & Dolls", "Born To Be Adored", "The Age Of Information", "London 1888", "The Art Creep", "The Hiker", "System Of Usher", "Widow Twanky", "Nervous Heartbeat", and "The Cheque's In The Post". Cuneiform, 2016. Used 2CD ... $19.99
An incredibly ambitious work from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – an extended piece that's dedicated to the national park system in America, but which is also almost a musical "conversation" with that system too – one that seeks to expand and transform the landscape through a variety of different musical themes! Smith isn't just hugging trees at Yellowstone and Yosemite – and instead, passages of the work are influenced by New Orleans, the Mississippi River, and the work of Eileen Jackson Southern – influences that take the whole proceedings far past the familiar, and into the rich sonic territory we've come to expect from Wadada. Yet the sound here is maybe even more richly textured than on any of Smith's recent recordings – with plenty of dark tones and shapes delivered by the Golden Quintet lineup that includes Anthony Davis on piano, Ashley Walters on cello, John Lindberg on bass, and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums. Titles include "New Orleans The National Culture Park 1718", "Yellowstone The First National Park & The Spirit Of America", "Sequioa Kings Canyon National Park", "Eileen Jackson Southern 1920 to 2002 – A Literary National Park", and "Yosemite – The Glaciers, The Falls, The Wells, & The Valley Of Goodwill 1890". Basslines, heavy drums, spacey keyboards, and odd guitar sounds abound – and titles include "Electronic Sound", "Avangiu", "Godzilla", "Allucinazione Mistiche", "Death's Song", "Escape", "Vai Gorilla", "Night Club Dance", "The Hunt Down", and "Concessioni Naturali". Open Systems Quartet (Tsahar/Ragin/Kowald/Drake)Open Systems Quartet ... CD
Marge (France), 2001. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
The group name's a bit mysterious, but we can say that these guys definitely have an open approach to their music – one that really allows a lot of flow from the trumpet of Hugh Ragin, and the tenor and bass clarinet of Assif Tsahar! The group come together as a piano-less quartet – with Peter Kowald on bass and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – a wonderful lineup who take the music into richer, freer directions as well – with some especially strong contributions from Kowald and Drake! It's been awhile since we've heard Peter's bass in a setting this bold – and the result is wonderful – and Hamid is pretty fierce at times on the drums, although other moments feature some of his more lyrical percussion passages. Titles include a great long take on Ornette's "Lonely Woman" – plus "The Call", "Dream Weavers", "Standing Motion", "Fathers & Mothers", and "The Lizards In The Maze". CD

✨✧ Billy GriffinSystematic ... CD
Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The third album in Billy Griffin's great run after leaving The Miracles – and a set that features some especially nice help from mellow groove maestro Leon Ware! Ware brings a depth to the record that takes it way past Billy's outdated look on the cover – that trademark ear for a killer midtempo groove that few other songwriters or producers could match – and which proves to be just the right setting for Billy's beautiful vocals! Instrumentation is heavy on beats and keyboards, with a definite electro approach – but there's a warmth here that goes way past the setting, both vocally and in the way the tunes come across. Titles include a remake of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" – plus "Can't Keep Running Away", "This Ain't Puppy Love", "Electrified", "Systematic", "Everybody Needs Somebody", and "Waiting To Touch". CD

Dazz BandJoystick/Jukebox ... CD
Motown/FTG, 1983/1984. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD

SybilLet Yourself Go ... LP
Next Plateau, 1987. Very Good+ ... $8.99
The obscure first album from Sybil – issued 2 years before her breakout self-titled hit, and recorded with a sound that only hints at the brilliance of later years. The feel here is a bit more club-oriented – somewhere between the late disco years and some of the post-house projects that would link a female vocalist with a soundsystem – not nearly as chunky on the rhythms as the Sybil hits we like best, and almost with a simpler pop sort of feel. Titles include 2 early takes on "Don't Make Me Over" – in "nitetime" and "daytime" mixes – plus "Falling In Love", "Walking In The Moonlight", "Let Yourself Go (Paradise mix)", "My Love Is Guaranteed", and "U & Me 2 Nite". YazzWanted (3CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD

VariousCoxone's Music 2 – The Sound Of Young Jamaica - More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959 to 1963 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.99
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. VariousI-Robots – Italo Electro Disco Underground Classics ... CD
Irma (Italy), Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99
A great look at an oft-neglected chapter of underground club – the excellent electronic work coming out of Italy in the early 80s! The Italian approach to the music was certainly influenced by the sounds of New York, German, and England at the time – but it also had its own flavor – a kind of unabashed love of the dancefloor, and a subtle hope that disco would someday come again! The grooves on the set are all spare and electronic, but also quite infectious – with a really strong focus on the hook, and a stripped-down sound that somehow makes them even more compelling. Titles include "Robot Is Systematic" by Letric Workers, "Dance Boy Dance" by Alexander Robotnick, "Stranger In A Strange Land (club)" by NOIA, "Collision (rmx)" by Sphinx, "Pinguins Invasion (hot version)" by Scotch, "Plastic Doll (rmx inst)" by Dharma, "Walking In The Neon (club)" by Peter Richard, "Wonderful (inst)" by Klein & MBO, "I Need Love (inst)" by Capricorn, and "Spacer Woman (voc)" by Charlie. VariousRio Baile Funk – Favela Booty Beats ... CD
Essay (Germany), 2003. Used ... $4.99
The real sound of Brazilian soul in the 21st Century – the kind of grooves that are going down on soundsystems up in the favelas in Rio, not the hipster bars down at the beaches! There's an unabashed love of American R&B on these tracks – not classic soul from the 70s, or hipster soul from the underground – but mainstream grooves from points south, inspired by Miami bass, crunk, crossover house, mainstream hip hop, and even a bit of dancehall. The CD's a great overview of the music that currently goes under the name of "funk" in Brazilian culture – a sound that's very different than the use of the term by American musicians – and although we've described many of the roots of the music in American terms, there's also some distinctly Brazilian influences that resonate strongly – and which make for the kind of evolutionary sound that happened when Jamaicans first started trying to recreate American R&B, then took things in a whole new direction. Titles include "Mengao 2000" by Furacao 2000, "Cavalo De Pau" by Paty, "Pocotocopo" by MC Serginho, "Tapinha" by MCs Naldinho & Beth, "Planeta Dominado" by SD Boys, "Cerol Na Mao" by Dennis DJ, "O Baile Todo" by Bonde Do Tiagro, and "Mulher Coca Cola" by Ricardo E Esquito. VariousRough Guide To Latin Rare Groove Vol 2 ... LP
Rough Guide, Late 60s/Early 70s/2015. Sealed ... $9.99
Heavy Latin grooves – served up with plenty of funk, jazz, and soul in the mix – and put together as a collection that's even better than the first volume in this series! DJ Pablo Yglesias seems to get sharper ears each time we tune into one of his projects – and this time around, he's come up with a massive batch of Latin tracks that goes way past the obvious – to include some really rare gems that move past the usual Fania classics. The set list is wonderful – and in keeping with Pablo's support of the global underground, there's also some contemporary cuts in the mix, but which sit perfectly next to the rare vintage tracks. Titles include "Camuri Chico" by Conjunto Papa Upa, "Un Clavel Una Tarjeta Y Una Lapiz" by Los Kenya, "Papo Boogaloo" by Papo Y Su Combo, "Steal Your Love" by Rene Lopez, "Tokuta (Kid Gusto rmx)" by Jungle Fire, "Yo Voy Ganao" by Systema Solar, "Fantasia Latina" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, and "Mi Chica Se Vuelve Loca" by Carlos Hayre Y Su Orquesta. Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. ✨✧ Adrian Younge Presents The Electronique VoidBlack Noise ... CD
Linear Labs, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Adrian Younge is a man of many modes – soundtrack funk, to hip hop, to a great project with The Delfonics – and here, he opens up yet another side of his genius – to give us a set of tracks that feel as if they could have been lifted from some great early 80s electronic film score! The music is heavy on keyboards and electronics, but gets the special sort of production that Younge brings to his projects – one that augments some of the richer, more soulful styles in the music – and keeps this record away from the coldness of other recent attempts to hit such a vibe! Some moments are darker, others are more song-based – with almost an Italian Cosmic club approach, right down to use of vocoder on the lyrics – and the album's year another feather in Mr Younge's ever-growing cap. Titles include "Voltage Controlled Orgasms", "Fly Away", "The Night", "Systems", "Patterns", "Linguistics", and "Suicidal Love". CD
