✨✧ Bob Seger System2+2=?/Ivory ... 7-inch
Third Man, Late 60s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
A monster couple tracks by The Bob Seger System – from long before Bob become a road weary superstar, working in the late 60s with a pummeling mix of garage rock and real love for gritty Detroit soul! "2+2=?" is a trudging, sort of anti-war song with massive drums and the bass loud in the mix, and Bob had a lot of that great, gravelly grit in his voice even at this young age! "Ivory" a bit more of a rocker's nod to raw soul, again with a killer bass groove, this one with heavy organ, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jack McDuffHeatin' System ... LP
Cadet, 1972. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
One of the most amazing, expansive albums ever recorded by Brother Jack McDuff – a session that we'd rank right up there with his classic Moon Rappin for Blue Note – and which has an equally stretched out feel! Although some of Jack's other albums for Cadet in the 70s have a bit more of a keyboard-centric feel, this album's heavy on Hammond all the way through – played by McDuff with sharp edges, soaring solos, and that amazing sense of timing that few other players could match! But possibly even more amazing is the group on the set – a hip batch of cats who include Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones on bass, Don Myrick and Dave Young on tenor and flute, Bobby Alston on trumpet, Marty Roberts on guitar, and Derf Reklaw on percussion – all working wonderfully with McDuff arrangements on some very long tunes! The double-length nature of the 2LP record really lets the group stretch out nicely – and there's a tremendous sense of energy throughout – almost a mode that matches Charles Earland's Leaving This Planet album. Titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Radiation", "The Prophet", "The Boiler", "Pressure Gauge", "The Heatin System", "Elmo Tucker", and "Lonesome Is The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousNoise Reduction System – Formative European Electronica 1974 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
An incredible collection of electronic sounds that went on to inform generations of rock, pop, and dance music in years to come – but all featured here with much more interesting examples from the European roots of the genre! There's a wonderful criss-crossing of sources going on here – some academic experimenters from electronic labs, some prog musicians getting a bit more analog, some early digital keyboard wizards, and some downright punky folks – using electronics instead of guitars! The blend is wonderful, and very ear-opening – even more amazing than the partner set in this series, Close To The Noise Floor, which focused on the UK. The music here includes early work by artists you might not expect in such company, alongside others who flourished briefly at the time, gave us some great sounds – then quickly disappeared. Fortunately, the big book of notes tells all the details of the groups and their music – making the whole thing as historically informative as it is entertaining. Titles include "Ich Will" by DAF, "Ny Ny" by Truus De Groot, "Caramel" by Cluster, "Godot Was Here" by Human Flesh, "Soviet Invasion" by Doxa Sinistra, "Last Lift" by Not Only Bones, "Geld" by Malaria, "Son" by Minny Pops, "What's Dat" by Der Plan, "Industrial Tape Track 3 (excerpt)" by Maurizio Bianchi, "Sexual Discipline" by Die Form, "Flanco Dama" by Diseno Corbusier, "Troglodyten" by Asmus Tietchens, "Hymne Au Ver" by Bene Gesserit, "Secret Affair No 2" by Borghesia, "Glue Head" by Yello, "Party Talk" by Andre De Koning, "Shai Hulud" by Bernard Szajner, and "TAnze & Singen" by DDAA. 61 tracks in all! Columbia, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". ✨✧ Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". ✨✧ Freedom Sounds featuring Wayne HendersonSoul Sound System ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! This set's a little more ambitious than the group's first album – with a number of tracks that groove in a very strong Latin jazz mode, sounding a lot like some of the best work on Atlantic at the time by Mongo Santamaria, Hubert Laws, and others. Henderson's trombone is still a key solo instrument, but the album also features some incredible sax work from Willie Gresham – a player we know little about, but who makes the album cook in the same fantastic way that Hubert Laws and Sonny Fortune did for Mongo's best work of the 60s! The grooves are very right-on, with plenty of excellent percussion work – and titles include the originals "Love-Out", "Behold The Day", and "Soul Sound System", plus some groovy covers, like "All You Need is Love", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "Are You Sure?" – all done with a great Latiny groove! Akoya Afrobeat EnsembleIntroducing The Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble ... CD
Afrobomb, 2004. Used ... $9.99
Afro Funk from the New York scene – served up by a combo who've taken Fela's inspiration to great new levels! The sound here definitely has roots in the grooves first grown in the 70s – heavy percussion, hard-rolling rhythms, and a brace of horns soaring over the top – tight on the head arrangements, but free to step out in jazzier moments in the longer space of the tracks! But Akoya also have a sound that's far more than just a copycat of the classic years – and they bring a sophisticated, contemporary groove to their music – one that's still mostly live and organic, but which also has a great sense of space and timing too. Vocal numbers include the political tracks "USA (Unilateral System Of Attack)" and "Star Wars" – and other titles include "Pelotera", "Mutiny", and "Akoya Chant". CD

AmadanaSibreco Turntable (internal speakers in wood cabinet – complete with USB & RCA outputs, and stylus) ... Turntable
Amadana (Japan), 2015. New Item ... $259.99
A totally wonderful little turntable – solid, stylish, and totally self-contained – with a strong sound that's a lot better than most other plug-and-play models on the market! The first thing that stands out with this one is the base – which is very solid, and has a wood veneer – which seems to give the whole thing a much warmer sound than the mostly-plastic models on the market, especially when you turn the volume way up! The speakers are hidden in the legs – isolated from the platter in a nice way that causes a lot less interference when the volume is up – and the platter features a belt drive, which further reduces distortion – and makes for very solid playback. The turntable spins at 33, 45, and 78rpm – and it comes with a ceramic stereo cartridge and stylus, for easy play right out of the box. And although you can play the unit on its own, it also has RCA outputs that allow you to plug into a full stereo system – as well as a USB output, with MP3 software too. The whole thing's capped off by a great dust cover that keeps the record free of dust while playing – and we'd honestly be hard-pressed to find a better self-contained turntable on the market today! John Cage with David TudorVariations IV – Volume II ... LP
Everest/Essential, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.99
A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage, and which features him and David Tudor playing a mixed bag of sounds on a sound system, recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA. The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are, even if they've been reduced to drivel by countless "experimental" post-rock bands. Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". The title of the record may sound a bit scientific, but the music within has a very human appeal – sweet funky rhythms forged by the team of DJ Rocca and Stefano Ghittoni – the latter of whom you might know from previous productions with The Dining Rooms! The sound here is maybe an even more stripped-down take on that group's approach – very classic in the core elements used, but very contemporary in presentation overall – almost with a lean, very rhythmic approach that takes us back to the earliest years of Italo House – especially in the warmth of the tunes – but with a vibe that's also much more 21st Century overall! Titles include "Jupiter", "Cosmic Double Bass", "Past Present & Future", "Soul Place", "Memories", and "Carrie System". CD

An amazing version of this ultra-cool item – the legendary Buddha Machine, which has been around for many years in a number of incarnations – but may well have found the perfect expression in the music of Philip Glass! The original Buddha box was a small transistor radio-like object that contained sound samples to aid in meditation – mostly chants and tones that were minimal, and would repeat. Yet this version features some beautiful musical lines from the works of composer Philip Glass – piano passages mostly, but with some organ and vocal bits too – all with a warmth and sense of color that other boxes never had. And there's also something very special about the presentation – extremely minimal, even in the sonic range that comes from the small speaker – which is a very different think than listening to the music of Glass through a full stereo system – much more organic and spatially relevant! Cameron GravesPlanetary Prince ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Graves produced – which gives the record a very different feel than other Mack Avenue releases – and titles include "Isle Of Love", "The Lucifer Rebellion", "El Diablo", "Adam & Eve", "Planetary Prince", "The End Of Corporatism", and "Satania Our Solar System". Crammed (Belgium), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
Wonderful work from the Kasai All-Stars – a group we first discovered in the Congotronics series with Konono No 1 – and who still have the same wonderful blend of raw rhythms, fuzzy distortion, and very powerful vocals! Their music has this powerfully organic vibe – with acoustic and electric elements bumping together in a fantastic way – that special sort of immediate power that really grabs you, and never asks for deeper cultural understanding as the price of admission. And the record's also got some interesting surprises too, in that a few numbers are performed by the larger Orchestra Symphonique Kimbanguiste, used in the soundtrack of which the main Kasai music is a part – versions of a few compositions by Arvo Part, which creates a heavenly juxtaposition next to the earthier numbers – with a vibe that's quite unusual, and makes the Kasai music seem even more powerful. Titles include "Kapinga Yamba", "In Praise Of Homeboys", "Tshalemba", "Mabela", "Quick As White", and "Tshitua Fuila Mbuloba". 2LP package also features some bonus remixes – including "Drowning Goat (Daedalus rmx)", "Felicite Three (Ramzi rmx)", "In Praise Of Homeboys (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Quick As White (Clap Clap rmx)", and "Salute To Kalombo (Ekiti Sound System rmx)". Blue Note, 1966. Very Good ... $49.99
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". An incredible tribute to the short-lived, but extremely influential Prescription label from Chicago – started by Ron Trent and Chez Damier in the mid 90s, as part of the second wave of house sounds from that city – music that was even more underground and farther-reaching than the first wave of house a decade before! The box features most of the rare singles on the label, plus unreleased tracks too – and is very heavy on Trent's music, which was really embracing lots of bigger ideas – taking house music far from the mainstream that had taken over once the first wave spread overseas. Cinevox/Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This package brings together some of the best cuts from those days, with an extra special Finders Keepers/Andy Votel ear for the weirdest and most unusual sounds – which creates an album that's plenty funky, but in ways that are very different from the usual US or European styles of the time. Basslines, heavy drums, spacey keyboards, and odd guitar sounds abound – and titles include "Electronic Sound", "Avangiu", "Godzilla", "Allucinazione Mistiche", "Death's Song", "Escape", "Vai Gorilla", "Night Club Dance", "The Hunt Down", and "Concessioni Naturali". Gone is the quirkiness of the first few records, but in its place is one of the best (and first) efforts to refine earlier experiments with electronics into a tighter, more pop-styled mode – one that's aided strongly here by the production efforts of Conny Plank, whose work in the electric prog years of the German scene really help give this record a real sense of depth! Titles include "Slow Motion", "I Can't Stay Long", "Someone Else's Clothes", "Blue Light", "Quiet Men", "Dislocation", "Maximum Acceleration", and "Just For A Moment". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing on Antilles. Cover has some flaking on one corner.)

VariousSoundsystem Dubplate Specials 1975 to 1979 ... CD
Jamaican Recordings (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
A great collection of underground dub tracks from late 70s Jamaica – the kind of limited-run dub plates that would circulate between some of the bigger sound systems on the scene, and offer up radically trippy versions of better-known tunes! The set is heavy on echo and slow-stepping rhythms – and the track selection is great – with a wonderful overview of rare cuts you might not encounter anywhere else! Titles include "Exalted Dub" by Leroy Smart, "How Long Dub" by Pat Kelly, "Everybody Needs Dub" by Slim Smith, "Peace & Love In Dub" by Johnny Clarke, "Heavy Dub" by Delroy Wilson, "Thunder Rock" by Cornell Campbell, "Bag A Wire Dub" by Johnny Clarke, and "Chapter Of Money" by Horace Andy. CD features 4 bonus tracks. CD

Laurie Anderson/John Giorno/William S BurroughsYou're The Guy I Want To Share My Money With ... LP
Giorno Poetry Systems, 1981. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A really wonderful record from a really wonderful time when it seemed like boundaries were really breaking down – not just between musical genres, but between different sides of the art spectrum as well! The record is partly experimental art, but has a crossover appeal to post-punk sensibilities too – thanks both to Anderson's wit, and John Giorno's sense of playful production. Wonderful work from all three artists – and not issued elsewhere. LP, Vinyl record album

Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cecil TaylorChinampas ... LP
Leo (UK), 1988. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A mystical solo performance by Cecil Taylor – not nearly as frenetic as some of his other work of the time! The setting is a studio one, and in the intimate space, Taylor delivers some of his compelling poetry – almost as lyrically jagged and dynamic as his famous piano lines on other records! There's no piano at all on this record – just bells and percussion used by Cecil to accompany his voice – which has also been overdubbed so there's occasional interplay of words in a way that almost reminds us of some of those cool Giorno Poetry Systems albums. The set's got almost an hour of performance – and really represents an fresh chapter in Taylor's career! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousCoxone's Music 2 – The Sound Of Young Jamaica - More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959 to 1963 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. ✨✧ DJ ShadowMountain Has Fallen EP (with download) ... LP
Mass Appeal, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great EP from the always inspired, never predictable DJ Shadow! He gets assists from top notch MCs both legendary and contemporary in Nas and Danny Brown – plus modern legend film score composer Steven Price on a track – showing a pretty incredible stylistic reach on this tight, but creatively sprawling 4 track set. The closer "Corridors" with modern movie soundtrack heavy Steven Price is a real late model DJ Shadow standout, combining some of the moody aspects that have always been integral to Shadow productions with all the more depth via Price's orchestral flourishes. "Systematic" is straight up top shelf hip hop with Nas, "Horror Show" is that too, catered nicely to Danny Brown's distinctive voice, and "Good News" is a spacey, bouncy, jittery and uber-compelling instrumental. ✨✧ YazzWanted (3CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD
