Herbie HancockSound System ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Sealed ... $6.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Very Good ... $3.99
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". VariousNoise Reduction System – Formative European Electronica 1974 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 4 CDs ... $18.99
An incredible collection of electronic sounds that went on to inform generations of rock, pop, and dance music in years to come – but all featured here with much more interesting examples from the European roots of the genre! There's a wonderful criss-crossing of sources going on here – some academic experimenters from electronic labs, some prog musicians getting a bit more analog, some early digital keyboard wizards, and some downright punky folks – using electronics instead of guitars! The blend is wonderful, and very ear-opening – even more amazing than the partner set in this series, Close To The Noise Floor, which focused on the UK. The music here includes early work by artists you might not expect in such company, alongside others who flourished briefly at the time, gave us some great sounds – then quickly disappeared. Fortunately, the big book of notes tells all the details of the groups and their music – making the whole thing as historically informative as it is entertaining. Titles include "Ich Will" by DAF, "Ny Ny" by Truus De Groot, "Caramel" by Cluster, "Godot Was Here" by Human Flesh, "Soviet Invasion" by Doxa Sinistra, "Last Lift" by Not Only Bones, "Geld" by Malaria, "Son" by Minny Pops, "What's Dat" by Der Plan, "Industrial Tape Track 3 (excerpt)" by Maurizio Bianchi, "Sexual Discipline" by Die Form, "Flanco Dama" by Diseno Corbusier, "Troglodyten" by Asmus Tietchens, "Hymne Au Ver" by Bene Gesserit, "Secret Affair No 2" by Borghesia, "Glue Head" by Yello, "Party Talk" by Andre De Koning, "Shai Hulud" by Bernard Szajner, and "TAnze & Singen" by DDAA. 61 tracks in all! ✨✧ Peter SchillingError In The System ... LP
Elektra, 1983. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1987. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". Atlantic, 1988. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". The title of the record may sound a bit scientific, but the music within has a very human appeal – sweet funky rhythms forged by the team of DJ Rocca and Stefano Ghittoni – the latter of whom you might know from previous productions with The Dining Rooms! The sound here is maybe an even more stripped-down take on that group's approach – very classic in the core elements used, but very contemporary in presentation overall – almost with a lean, very rhythmic approach that takes us back to the earliest years of Italo House – especially in the warmth of the tunes – but with a vibe that's also much more 21st Century overall! Ocean Front, 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An obscure album from Garland Green – recorded years after his hit sides for Uni, and with a very different feel too! The album's got arrangements by Lamont Dozier, and the overall feel is very similar to Dozier's own work from the early 80s – modern soul in a mellow mode, with arrangements that are smooth and a bit slick, but also offset strongly by Green's all-soul vocals. There's a bit of a southern/modern feel to the set, and titles include "Always", "Nobody Ever Came Close", "System", "Love's Calling", "These Arms", and "Tryin To Hold On". LP, Vinyl record album

The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Tracks are long, and groove with a jazzy flourish that we wouldn't have expected so strongly – hitting hard on plenty of nice nice numbers that include "Kash Register", "Do Your Thing", "Angel", "The Zero Point", and "Getting It Out Of My System". Christof Kurzmann & Mats GustafssonFalling & Five Other Failings ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2016. New Copy ... $9.99
We're not sure we hear any failings at all here – as the music is completely compelling, right from the start – and one of the most sonically-intense records we've heard from reedman Mats Gustafsson in years! The album's a bit of an electro-acoustic outing – in that Mats plays tenor, baritone, bass, and slide saxophones – while Kurzmann processes his sounds, and works with the ppooll system – and even plays a rubberband and vocalizes at points! But the main crux of the record comes from the interplay between the reed sounds of Mats and electronic processing of Christof – which creates some beautiful textures and tones. Titles include "Falling", and "Failing (parts 1 through 5)". CD

MazeMaze ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good- ... $5.99
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". LP, Vinyl record album

Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. VariousAkwaba Abidjan – Afrofunk In 1970s Ivory Coast ... CD
Oriki (France), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
A fantastic collection of funk from the 70s scene in Ivory Coast – music that's every bit as heavy on jazz-based solos as it is on the grooves – with some especially strong sax lines that really give the tunes a lot of soul! The music here is nice and raw, and often very stripped-down in terms of presentation and production – never too polished or commercial, nor purposely tripped-out – and instead the vein of Afro Funk that's fantastically put-together right from the start, and which has plenty of appeal to fans of American funk from the same time! Lots of these artists clearly borrow the same James Brown influence that Nigerian funk work had in the early 70s – but they also work with very interesting and unique sounds throughout – especially on the reeds and keyboards, which cascade with lots of fresh phrasings and frenetic energy. There are vocals on some cuts, but the instrumentation is always what keeps things strong – and titles include "Tumba Safari" by Afro Train, "Chicken" by De Frank Jr, "Tink Tank" by Afro Soul System, "Issa" by Les Nidrou, "Secret Populaire" by Sewa Jacintho, "Ayee Menko" by De Frank Jr, "Femme D'Ajourd'hui (part 2)" by Moussa Doumbia, "Assalam Aleikoum" by Francis Kingsley, "Dankasa" by De Frank Jr, and "Mariage" by Moussa Doumbia. Starday/Be! (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy 10CD ... $198.99 199.99
An amazing look at a very underground strain of music during the postwar years – the now-legendary "custom" series at Starday Records – a system by which individuals could send in their own music and get them pressed up on a limited run! Other labels offered such a service, but Starday has probably become the most famous over the years – partly because if the music was deemed worthy, the label would sign the artist themselves – and partly because there were hundreds of singles that came through the process that were hard-burning gems at the time! Given Starday's usual roster, there's a fair bit of hillbilly, country, and rockabilly in the mix – but the scope of sounds also includes a bit of R&B, gospel, and other styles too – all brought together here for the first time ever, in a comprehensive box that looks at the first five years of the series. Many singles were pressed with their own label names, which makes this package way more than just Starday label rarities – and artists hailed from all over the country, including many who never saw the light of day after these records. The full history of the series is told in the massive hardcover book – which lists each record individually, with label scans, recording information, and photos and bios of the artists. The huge book is almost worth it alone for any fan of this period of music – but the set also comes with 10 CDs that present each single in chronological order – 312 songs, and a heck of a lot of rare music, all done up beautifully! Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
JD Allen adds his tenor to a fair bit of the tracks on this album from drummer Dana Murray – and while his horn isn't usually heard on records with a parental advisory sticker on the front, that setting also makes for a surprisingly strong outlet for his talents! Murray is clearly a very inventive leader – and not only plays other percussion and some keyboards too, but opens the door to some singers and MCs who warrant that label on the front – creating one of the truest blends of jazz, hip hop, and neo soul we've heard in years. Vocals are by Caron Wheeler, Reg Wyns, Heidi Martin, and CJ Mills – and the album also features guest work from Marc Cary on fender Rhodes, Oliver Lake on alto, Nasheet Waits on drums, and Orrin Evans on piano. Titles include "In The Beginning", "Suite Kaepernick", "Ballad Of Lies", "Temptation", "Alice Mae", "Dead Wishes", "The System", "Comfortable Discomfort", and "Stand By Your Man (Lady Liberty)". CD

Bay Area organist Merl Saunders gets some help from rock-famous friends Tom Fogarty and Jerry Garcia in this surprisingly listenable album of groovy little tunes with a San Francisco jazz funk sound. The record has a few bad rocky bluesy moments – but there's a surprising amount of nice organ work from Saunders, and a few nice funky riffs in the background. Titles include "The System", "Soul Roach", "Expressway (To Your Heart)", and "Chock-Lite Puddin". Some tracks have vocals, but you can listen around most of those. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cecil TaylorUnit Structures ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". Obscure, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed and though a bit academic, still pretty darn beautiful! This early instrumental release was the first time that Eno really explored his farther-reaching ideas on record. The set features 2 pieces: "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer; and "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel", which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. A surprisingly sweet batch of remixes of Bob Marley material – done by Afrodisiac Sound System,Trio Electrico, Jimpster and others! The compilers of Roots, Rock, Remixed were wise and tasteful enough to pick the rightly reverent remixers to do the tunes justice rather than taking a clean, poppy dive towards the mainstream. Nice! Tracks include "Soul Shakedown Party" (Afrodisiac Sound System remix), "Trenchtown Rock" (Trio Electrico rmx), "400 Years" (Jimpster remix), "Sun Is Shining" (Yes King rmx), "Duppy Conqueror" (Fort Knox 5 rmx)" and "Lively Up Yourself" (Bombay Dub Orchestra rmx). Hany Mehanna looks like a mighty cool cat standing in front of his Farfisa on the cover of this mid 70s set – and he sounds pretty darn cool on the grooves, too – in an unusual mix of Egyptian instrumentation and more electric modes! The music features lots of older percussion and stringed instrumentation, but also has Hany really spinning out some deft lines on the keys of the organ too – creating the kind of grooves you might have heard if the pyramids were outfitted with a sound system – just the right kind of instrumental modes to really set the mood! All tunes are instrumental, and titles include "Mouna", "Raqsah Arahiyah", "Mouled El-Khallej", "Dala", and "Farha". LP, Vinyl record album

FM3, 2017. New Item ... Out Of Stock
An amazing version of this ultra-cool item – the legendary Buddha Machine, which has been around for many years in a number of incarnations – but may well have found the perfect expression in the music of Philip Glass! The original Buddha box was a small transistor radio-like object that contained sound samples to aid in meditation – mostly chants and tones that were minimal, and would repeat. Yet this version features some beautiful musical lines from the works of composer Philip Glass – piano passages mostly, but with some organ and vocal bits too – all with a warmth and sense of color that other boxes never had. And there's also something very special about the presentation – extremely minimal, even in the sonic range that comes from the small speaker – which is a very different think than listening to the music of Glass through a full stereo system – much more organic and spatially relevant! Dub Store (Japan), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
King Jammy may have come to the reggae party a bit later than some of his famous predecessors – but the man's ears and studio talents helped provide a great way for the whole scene to move forward strongly – as you'll hear from these crucial productions from the key dancehall hears! Although the bigger version of that style meant chart crossover, and even a bridge to other musical communities – the sound here is nicely stripped-down, and very rootsy – definitely a bit digital in the production, but always with a richness that goes right back to the earlier dubplate years of the 70s. As with all Dub Store titles, the choice of cuts is wonderful, and the presentation is right up there with the best from Soul Jazz and 17 North Parade. Titles include "History" by Dennis Brown, "One Big Ghetto" by Half Pint, "Don't Take Your Gun To Town" by Al Campbell, "Crucial Boy (version)" by Prince Jammy, "Victim Of Babylon (version)" by King Jammy, "Love Light Of Mine" by Horace Andy, "Cry For The Youths" by Wackad, "Dangerous System" by Pad Anthony, "No Drugs" by Tinga Stewart, and "Move On" by Wailing Souls. Amadana (Japan), 2015. New Item ... Out Of Stock
A totally wonderful little turntable – solid, stylish, and totally self-contained – with a strong sound that's a lot better than most other plug-and-play models on the market! The first thing that stands out with this one is the base – which is very solid, and has a wood veneer – which seems to give the whole thing a much warmer sound than the mostly-plastic models on the market, especially when you turn the volume way up! The speakers are hidden in the legs – isolated from the platter in a nice way that causes a lot less interference when the volume is up – and the platter features a belt drive, which further reduces distortion – and makes for very solid playback. The turntable spins at 33, 45, and 78rpm – and it comes with a ceramic stereo cartridge and stylus, for easy play right out of the box. And although you can play the unit on its own, it also has RCA outputs that allow you to plug into a full stereo system – as well as a USB output, with MP3 software too. The whole thing's capped off by a great dust cover that keeps the record free of dust while playing – and we'd honestly be hard-pressed to find a better self-contained turntable on the market today! ✨✧ Cameron GravesPlanetary Prince ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Graves produced – which gives the record a very different feel than other Mack Avenue releases – and titles include "Isle Of Love", "The Lucifer Rebellion", "El Diablo", "Adam & Eve", "Planetary Prince", "The End Of Corporatism", and "Satania Our Solar System". Wonderful work from the Kasai All-Stars – a group we first discovered in the Congotronics series with Konono No 1 – and who still have the same wonderful blend of raw rhythms, fuzzy distortion, and very powerful vocals! Their music has this powerfully organic vibe – with acoustic and electric elements bumping together in a fantastic way – that special sort of immediate power that really grabs you, and never asks for deeper cultural understanding as the price of admission. And the record's also got some interesting surprises too, in that a few numbers are performed by the larger Orchestra Symphonique Kimbanguiste, used in the soundtrack of which the main Kasai music is a part – versions of a few compositions by Arvo Part, which creates a heavenly juxtaposition next to the earthier numbers – with a vibe that's quite unusual, and makes the Kasai music seem even more powerful. Titles include "Kapinga Yamba", "In Praise Of Homeboys", "Tshalemba", "Mabela", "Quick As White", and "Tshitua Fuila Mbuloba". 2LP package also features some bonus remixes – including "Drowning Goat (Daedalus rmx)", "Felicite Three (Ramzi rmx)", "In Praise Of Homeboys (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Quick As White (Clap Clap rmx)", and "Salute To Kalombo (Ekiti Sound System rmx)". Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. CD

A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up".
