Central Nervous SystemI Could Have Danced All Night ... LP
Music Factory, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Hard rocking late 60s work with a bit of a bluesy touch – a lot heavier sounding than you'd expect from the title! Some of the tunes are slow and plodding, led by a stepping electric bass – and a few others break out with a bit more horn flourishes that add a nice element. Titles include "Sweet Hot Lucy", "I'm My Own Keeper", "I'm Undecided", "Welcome Back Girl", "It's So Hard", "She's Everything Good To Me", and "Mystery Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... $12.99
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". SystemSweat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mirage/FTG, 1983. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
The big breakout record for The System – one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own – and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn't need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single "You Are In My System" – a cut that's wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include "Sweat", "It's Passion", "Now I Am Electric", "Stand Up & Cheer", and "I Won't Let Go". This expanded version combines the original album with six bonus extended remixes – including "Promises Can Break", "This Is For You", and "Don't Disturb This Groove". CD

Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

LTJ XperienceDon't Let The System Get You Down ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2016. New Copy ... $14.99
LTJ Experience started out as one of the few great Italian club artists to carry forward the disco sound of the glory years into the final decade of the last century – and since that time, he's just continued to evolve his sound – to a point where he comes across here with a wonderfully lean, clean groove that's quite far from his roots! The album's very spare in presentation – hardly any information, save for a list of song titles and bpm notations – and LTJ's got the same approach in his music – really focusing on a few key elements for each cut, but building things up in a way that still manages to hold onto some warmer funk currents as well – that sense of soul we've always loved in his music from the start. Titles include "Walking Groove", "To The Disco", "Inside Groove", "Black Machine", "Up & Go", "I'll Never Change Up On You", "Slow Fire", "Feel Inside", and "Don't Let The System Get You Down". CD

Peter SchillingError In The System (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Big Break (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $14.99
An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". CD features 18 more bonus tracks – a few mixes of "Major Tom", plus German cuts "Ich Hab Keine Lust", "Die Wuste Lebt", "Fast Alles Konstruiert", "Dawn Trugt Der Schein", and "Fehler Im System". CD

Deep, soulful grooves from the Ron Trent – balancing soul jazz-steeped moods with club groove atmosphere! "Liquid Love" pairs some dexterous keyboard grooves over some fairly thick beats, lightened just a bit by some airy synth and textural bits of vocal – especially in the tune's reprise that closes the side. "Sound System Prevail" brings back the percussive edge, again with some sweeter bits of keys and synth. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Everest/Modern Harmonic, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 36.98
A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage – featuring him with David Tudor weaving an eclectic mix sounds on a sound system – recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA! The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are even decades later – it's almost hard to believe this wildly ambitious freeform kind of music is a product of the mid 60s! ✨✧ Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes Complete – Bootleg Series Volume 11 (6CD set – with book) ... CD
Columbia, 1967. Used 6 CDs ... $79.99
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – finally available after all these years in a definitive, officially-sanctioned box set for the first time ever! The original 1975 LP version was (and still is) an incredible sampler of the original recordings – also an appendix, with some later material added to it – and it really only hinted at the ragged glory of the 1967 sessions. Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of the originals, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Here for the first time ever is a legitimate release of a great wealth of the raw, original Woodstock recordings, painstakingly restored from the original master tapes – but without the overdubs, editing and tinkerings of the mid 70s LP version, and other tracks that never been officially released in any form! The Complete box set edition is truly incredible – with the material laid out as close to chronological order as possible, as based on Garth Hudson's session recording numbering system – and it really is as close a true, complete Basement Tapes as the world is ever likely to see. 138 tracks on 6CDs – including "Edge Of The Ocean", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "Johnny Todd", "The Hills Of Mexico", "Too Much Of Nothing (Take 2)", "Tears of Rage (Take 1)", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ain't No More Cane (Take 2)", "900 Miles From Home", "One Kind Of Favor", "All You Have To Do Is Dream (Take 1)", "2 Dollars And 99 Cents", "Down By The Station", "Cok All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies", "The Spanish Song (Take 1)" and many, many more. Also includes a 120-page deluxe-bound book with rare and unseen photos and extensive notes. CD

Orrin Evans#Knowingishalfthebattle ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
The first track here almost made us think we had the wrong record in the sound system – as it's a creative electronic piece that introduces the straighter jazz numbers – but that sonic surprise is just another great reminder of the ever-growing range of expression we've come to experience from pianist Orrin Evans! Evans has always been great, but in recent years he really seems to have expanded his musical idiom – and here, he's working with an unusual group that features two guitarists – Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kevin Eubanks – who don't play on every track, or together at once, but who create these chromatic elements that are beautiful alongside Orrin's more angular piano lines! The core trio has Evans on both acoustic and Fender Rhodes, with Luques Curtis on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums – and as the tracks move on, they draw contributions from both guitarists, plus saxophonist Caleb Curtis, and singer M'Balia – whose performances include a fantastic version of the David Bowie tune "Kooks", and "That's All". Other tracks include "Calls", "When Jen Came In", "Chiara", "You Don't Need A License To Drive", "Half The Battle", and "Doc's Holiday". CD

Mable JohnStay Out Of The Kitchen ... CD
Stax (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Amazing under-discovered soul – a huge collection of late 60s recordings by Mable John – probably best known for her work with the Raelettes, or her earlier sides at Motown – but heard here in a pivotal time between those two chapters in her career! A few of the tracks on the set were issued as singles by Stax, but most of the material sat unissued for years – practically one of the greatest crimes in soul in the 60s, because there's a depth here that's tremendous – and a quality level that could have made Mable a huge star at the time. The sound here is pure 60s Stax all the way – extremely deep, and done with a lean, mean punch that's totally great – a perfect meeting of a massive vocal talent and a well-oiled studio system that could take a good singer and make her sound great! The set's a great introduction to Mable's genius – one that features notes on her career and a total of 26 rare tracks that include "Have Your Cake", "Sweet Devil", "Able Mable", "Stay Out of the Kitchen", "Drop On In", and "I'm Catching". The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Tracks are long, and groove with a jazzy flourish that we wouldn't have expected so strongly – hitting hard on plenty of nice nice numbers that include "Kash Register", "Do Your Thing", "Angel", "The Zero Point", and "Getting It Out Of My System". Christof Kurzmann & Mats GustafssonFalling & Five Other Failings ... LP
Trost (Austria), New Copy ... About November 1, 2016 (delayed)
We're not sure we hear any failings at all here – as the music is completely compelling, right from the start – and one of the most sonically-intense records we've heard from reedman Mats Gustafsson in years! The album's a bit of an electro-acoustic outing – in that Mats plays tenor, baritone, bass, and slide saxophones – while Kurzmann processes his sounds, and works with the ppooll system – and even plays a rubberband and vocalizes at points! But the main crux of the record comes from the interplay between the reed sounds of Mats and electronic processing of Christof – which creates some beautiful textures and tones. Titles include "Falling", and "Failing (parts 1 through 5)". LP, Vinyl record album

MazeMaze ... CD
Capitol/Right Stuff, 1977. Used ... $6.99
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelings", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". CD

Sugar Hill, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Sure, it's not McDuff's funkiest record – but this is an excellent batch of smooth soulful tunes that show that McDuff was perfect in just about any setting! The core group on the set is Jack's Heatin' System ensemble – with Joe Farrell on saxes and Phil Upchurch on guitar – but they're augmented by some cool spacey fusion arrangements that sort of feel like late 70s slick jazz sides for Mercury or Columbia. The style works great with McDuff's keyboards – and were the record pushed at a better level, it would have put Jack up there with some of the smooth jazz stars of the 70s. Titles include "Say Sumpin Nice", "Night Fantasies", "Pocket Change", and "Tunisian Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... CD
Atlantic, 2002. Used ... $3.99
Missy and Timbaland (and the usual cast of guest stars) are back and hotter than ever before on Missy's fourth full length, much more of a hip hop record this time, with tons of old school party shouts and new school neo-electro production! Under Construction is kind of a concept album (don't worry, not in the Jethro Tull kind of way) with a theme that celebrates the hip hop golden age of the mid-to-late 80s but with a modern, probably timeless flavor. The status quo R&B that Missy can't seem to get out of her system is here only at a minimum – this is a hip hop record! Past guests like Method Man (turning in a great remake of "Bring The Pain"), Ludacris, and Jay Z show up as well as 50 Cent, Ms. Jade, Beyonce Knowles, and TLC – but as usual, no one steals the show from Mis and Tim. No one would claim Missy is the most scholarly of lyricists, but as a conduit for attitude and a spicy groove she can't be beat, plus her topical and scatological rhymes and choruses fit these hip hop party bumpers like a Kangol & a gold chain. Tons of shout outs to and samples of the old schoolers that are just way too true to be nostalgic, plus strong production from Timbaland that isn't afraid to risk his reputation as an innovator by referencing his influences. The duo may have produced more astoundingly great singles in the recent past, but this is Missy and Timbaland's magnum opus, as far as full lengths go. 13 tracks including "Work It", "Go To The Floor", "Bring The Pain" featuring Method Man, "Funky Fresh Dressed" featuring Ms Jade, "Slide", "Play That Beat", "Ain't That Funny", and more. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A wonderful collection of work from the always-great Momus – one of our favorite singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, a talent who really moves forward territory inspired by the work of Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, and George Brassens – and an artist who's given us so much incredible music during his career! The set really does a great job of spanning Momus' full career – from the acoustic start of his early Cherry Red albums and singles, to the open stylistic space of his music for Creation Records – where he shifted his ear for a catchy tune and sinister storyline into some really wonderful tracks – back to his return to Cherry Red and then formation of his own label – where he's continued to explore a fantastic array of topics with his undeniable wit. And in case you're wondering – the "public intellectual" title is a bit of a joke, taken from his classic "I Was A Maoist Intellectual" track from the 80s – but it's also somewhat fitting, given the incredible depth of his songwriting (although sadly, Momus has never hit the fame he deserves – which would make him a true public intellectual.) There's so many wonderful tracks on this set, we can't even count them all – and the collection's especially great for presenting some of the later Creation material that's been very hard to get in recent years. 3CD set features a whopping 56 tracks in all – plus notes on the tunes by Momus himself – and titles that include "Spacewalk", "Enlightenment", "The Ephephobe", "Paper Wraps Rock", "Flame Into Being", "The Homosexual", "How Do You Find My Sister", "Shaftesbury Avenue", "Summer Holiday 1999", "Ventriloquists & Dolls", "Born To Be Adored", "The Age Of Information", "London 1888", "The Art Creep", "The Hiker", "System Of Usher", "Widow Twanky", "Nervous Heartbeat", and "The Cheque's In The Post". Okki Nokki (Netherlands), New Item ... $449.99 499.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using a record cleaning machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! Comes with basic unit, power cord, brush, and fluid for cleaning a big amount of records. (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Turntable

Wadada Leo SmithAmerica's National Parks ... CD
Cuneiform, 2016. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 24.98
An incredibly ambitious work from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – an extended piece that's dedicated to the national park system in America, but which is also almost a musical "conversation" with that system too – one that seeks to expand and transform the landscape through a variety of different musical themes! Smith isn't just hugging trees at Yellowstone and Yosemite – and instead, passages of the work are influenced by New Orleans, the Mississippi River, and the work of Eileen Jackson Southern – influences that take the whole proceedings far past the familiar, and into the rich sonic territory we've come to expect from Wadada. Yet the sound here is maybe even more richly textured than on any of Smith's recent recordings – with plenty of dark tones and shapes delivered by the Golden Quintet lineup that includes Anthony Davis on piano, Ashley Walters on cello, John Lindberg on bass, and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums. Titles include "New Orleans The National Culture Park 1718", "Yellowstone The First National Park & The Spirit Of America", "Sequioa Kings Canyon National Park", "Eileen Jackson Southern 1920 to 2002 – A Literary National Park", and "Yosemite – The Glaciers, The Falls, The Wells, & The Valley Of Goodwill 1890". VariousMetti Una Bossa A Cena Vol 2 ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99
Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Schema groover Gerardo Frisina serves up a hand-picked batch of 16 tunes, mostly classic numbers from the late 60s and early 70s, pulled from the ranks of Italian soundtrack, jazz, and easy listening albums – all with a flair for making the bossa even groovier than it already is! Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! Titles include "Incontro All'Aereoporto" by Piero Piccioni, "Allora, Il Treno" by Bruno Nicolai & Edda Dell'Orso, "Avances" by Gerardo Frisina, "Wind" by Red Redford Sound System One, "Bossalonga" by Mustang, "Unreality Landscape" by Angel Pocho Gatti, "Susan Theme" by Daniele Patucchi, "Per Lei" by Stefano Torossi, and "Colpa Tua" by Giancarlo Gazzani. Bixio-Frizzi-TemperaMagnetic Systems ... LP
Cinevox/Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This package brings together some of the best cuts from those days, with an extra special Finders Keepers/Andy Votel ear for the weirdest and most unusual sounds – which creates an album that's plenty funky, but in ways that are very different from the usual US or European styles of the time. Basslines, heavy drums, spacey keyboards, and odd guitar sounds abound – and titles include "Electronic Sound", "Avangiu", "Godzilla", "Allucinazione Mistiche", "Death's Song", "Escape", "Vai Gorilla", "Night Club Dance", "The Hunt Down", and "Concessioni Naturali". Billy GriffinSystematic ... CD
Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $18.99
The third album in Billy Griffin's great run after leaving The Miracles – and a set that features some especially nice help from mellow groove maestro Leon Ware! Ware brings a depth to the record that takes it way past Billy's outdated look on the cover – that trademark ear for a killer midtempo groove that few other songwriters or producers could match – and which proves to be just the right setting for Billy's beautiful vocals! Instrumentation is heavy on beats and keyboards, with a definite electro approach – but there's a warmth here that goes way past the setting, both vocally and in the way the tunes come across. Titles include a remake of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" – plus "Can't Keep Running Away", "This Ain't Puppy Love", "Electrified", "Systematic", "Everybody Needs Somebody", and "Waiting To Touch". CD

Geffen, 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
80s keyboard maestro Harold Faltermeyer gives Donna Summer plenty of help here – with the kind of catchy, hook-heavy lines that made his famous soundtrack work such a hit at the time! Harold had played on previous Summer albums, but really takes the lead here with a snapping, syncopated approach to rhythms – one that bubbles along nicely on titles that include "All Systems Go", "Dinner With Gershwin", "Only The Fool Survives", "Bad Reputation", "Love Shock", and "Jeremy". ✨✧ Open Systems Quartet (Tsahar/Ragin/Kowald/Drake)Open Systems Quartet ... CD
Marge (France), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The group name's a bit mysterious, but we can say that these guys definitely have an open approach to their music – one that really allows a lot of flow from the trumpet of Hugh Ragin, and the tenor and bass clarinet of Assif Tsahar! The group come together as a piano-less quartet – with Peter Kowald on bass and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – a wonderful lineup who take the music into richer, freer directions as well – with some especially strong contributions from Kowald and Drake! It's been awhile since we've heard Peter's bass in a setting this bold – and the result is wonderful – and Hamid is pretty fierce at times on the drums, although other moments feature some of his more lyrical percussion passages. Titles include a great long take on Ornette's "Lonely Woman" – plus "The Call", "Dream Weavers", "Standing Motion", "Fathers & Mothers", and "The Lizards In The Maze". CD

✨✧ Dazz BandJoystick ... LP
Motown, 1983. Very Good+ ... $4.99
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Lack Of AfroHello Baby ... LP
Loa (UK), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
Lack Of Afro really seems to have tightened up his game – realizing that more can come from less – especially when it's focused on a sound this strong! Gone are some of the tricks and turns you might know from the LOA of years back – especially some of the mixes that circulated under that name – and instead, the album's got this solid soulful vibe that feels more like a deep funk combo, than a set of tracks that come mostly from the hands of producer/instrumentalist Adam Gibbons! Yet while Gibbons plays much of the music on the set, he's also got some help from other funk players, too – and singers who include Joss Stone, Elliott Cole, Emma Noble, and Juliette Ashby – who help emphasize some of the more retro soul elements in the music, but with the collaborative vibe of singers in a soundsystem. Titles include "Hello Baby", "I Got The Rhythm", "Nothing Personal", "Take You Home", "One World", "The Bakery Girl", "Now I Feel Good", "Walk In The Sun", and "Peace & Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Perry & OthersMr Perry I Presume ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. Travis D StimelingCountry Music Reader ... Book
Oxford, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99 39.95
A great survey of important writings on country music from the earliest years to the present – one that doesn't just focus on the work of historians and music journalists, but also includes material from popular magazines, fan newsletters, trade publications, and even the artists themselves! The whole thing's a really fresh take on the format – very different than some of the too-iconic efforts that try to systemize country too much, with a great run between high and low, popular and obscure. The book features 51 chapters, each on very different topics – penned by folks as diverse as Charlie Louvin, Johnny Cash, Ralph Peer, Cecil B Sharp, John Lomax, Tom T Hall, George Will, and countless others. 382 pages, softcover. ✨✧ YazzWanted (3CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD

Adrian Younge Presents The Electronique VoidBlack Noise ... CD
Linear Labs, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Adrian Younge is a man of many modes – soundtrack funk, to hip hop, to a great project with The Delfonics – and here, he opens up yet another side of his genius – to give us a set of tracks that feel as if they could have been lifted from some great early 80s electronic film score! The music is heavy on keyboards and electronics, but gets the special sort of production that Younge brings to his projects – one that augments some of the richer, more soulful styles in the music – and keeps this record away from the coldness of other recent attempts to hit such a vibe! Some moments are darker, others are more song-based – with almost an Italian Cosmic club approach, right down to use of vocoder on the lyrics – and the album's year another feather in Mr Younge's ever-growing cap. Titles include "Voltage Controlled Orgasms", "Fly Away", "The Night", "Systems", "Patterns", "Linguistics", and "Suicidal Love". CD

VariousCoxone's Music 2 – The Sound Of Young Jamaica - More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959 to 1963 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. Heavy Latin grooves – served up with plenty of funk, jazz, and soul in the mix – and put together as a collection that's even better than the first volume in this series! DJ Pablo Yglesias seems to get sharper ears each time we tune into one of his projects – and this time around, he's come up with a massive batch of Latin tracks that goes way past the obvious – to include some really rare gems that move past the usual Fania classics. The set list is wonderful – and in keeping with Pablo's support of the global underground, there's also some contemporary cuts in the mix, but which sit perfectly next to the rare vintage tracks. Titles include "Camuri Chico" by Conjunto Papa Upa, "Un Clavel Una Tarjeta Y Una Lapiz" by Los Kenya, "Papo Boogaloo" by Papo Y Su Combo, "Steal Your Love" by Rene Lopez, "Tokuta (Kid Gusto rmx)" by Jungle Fire, "Yo Voy Ganao" by Systema Solar, "Fantasia Latina" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, and "Mi Chica Se Vuelve Loca" by Carlos Hayre Y Su Orquesta.
