✨✧ Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". ✨✧ SystemSweat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mirage/FTG, 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The big breakout record for The System – one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own – and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn't need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single "You Are In My System" – a cut that's wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include "Sweat", "It's Passion", "Now I Am Electric", "Stand Up & Cheer", and "I Won't Let Go". This expanded version combines the original album with six bonus extended remixes – including "Promises Can Break", "This Is For You", and "Don't Disturb This Groove". CD

Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... $5.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". Peter SchillingError In The System ... LP
Elektra, 1983. Very Good+ ... $5.99
An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". ✨✧ Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". ✨✧ LTJ XperienceDon't Let The System Get You Down ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LTJ Experience started out as one of the few great Italian club artists to carry forward the disco sound of the glory years into the final decade of the last century – and since that time, he's just continued to evolve his sound – to a point where he comes across here with a wonderfully lean, clean groove that's quite far from his roots! The album's very spare in presentation – hardly any information, save for a list of song titles and bpm notations – and LTJ's got the same approach in his music – really focusing on a few key elements for each cut, but building things up in a way that still manages to hold onto some warmer funk currents as well – that sense of soul we've always loved in his music from the start. Titles include "Walking Groove", "To The Disco", "Inside Groove", "Black Machine", "Up & Go", "I'll Never Change Up On You", "Slow Fire", "Feel Inside", and "Don't Let The System Get You Down". CD

Deep, soulful grooves from the Ron Trent – balancing soul jazz-steeped moods with club groove atmosphere! "Liquid Love" pairs some dexterous keyboard grooves over some fairly thick beats, lightened just a bit by some airy synth and textural bits of vocal – especially in the tune's reprise that closes the side. "Sound System Prevail" brings back the percussive edge, again with some sweeter bits of keys and synth. 12-inch, Vinyl record

John Cage with David TudorPresents Variations IV ... LP
Everest/Modern Harmonic, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 36.98
A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage – featuring him with David Tudor weaving an eclectic mix sounds on a sound system – recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA! The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are even decades later – it's almost hard to believe this wildly ambitious freeform kind of music is a product of the mid 60s! A sweet little J Dilla themed turntable – an official release of the James Yancey estate – and not only is it very nice looking, it's fully portable, and reasonably priced to boot! The Dilla Turntable is made especially for portable use – it folds into a sturdy mini-suitcase – but it would work as an affordable, entry-level standalone turntable, too. It's got a platter that's a little bit bigger than a 45, but will equally spin 10" and 12" vinyl with the lid open – it's in fact a 3-speed player, spinning at 33, 45, and 78rpms. Comes with built-in stereo speakers but has an RCA output if you'd like to plug it into a bigger stereo system, a 1.8" headphone jack, a USB output so you can record music directly into your computer (a transcription software disc is included in the package), a 45 adaptor, and even a replacement stylus! Orrin Evans#Knowingishalfthebattle ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
The first track here almost made us think we had the wrong record in the sound system – as it's a creative electronic piece that introduces the straighter jazz numbers – but that sonic surprise is just another great reminder of the ever-growing range of expression we've come to experience from pianist Orrin Evans! Evans has always been great, but in recent years he really seems to have expanded his musical idiom – and here, he's working with an unusual group that features two guitarists – Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kevin Eubanks – who don't play on every track, or together at once, but who create these chromatic elements that are beautiful alongside Orrin's more angular piano lines! The core trio has Evans on both acoustic and Fender Rhodes, with Luques Curtis on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums – and as the tracks move on, they draw contributions from both guitarists, plus saxophonist Caleb Curtis, and singer M'Balia – whose performances include a fantastic version of the David Bowie tune "Kooks", and "That's All". Other tracks include "Calls", "When Jen Came In", "Chiara", "You Don't Need A License To Drive", "Half The Battle", and "Doc's Holiday". CD

Fela & Africa 70Ikoyi Blindness/Kalakuta Show ... CD
Barclay/MCA, 1976. Used ... $7.99
Fela and Africa 70 are honed to razor-sharp perfection on these 2 albums from 1976! There's some incredible work on tenor sax on some of the cuts – especially "Ikoyi Blindness" and "Kalakuta Show", both of which begin with incredibly well-wrought solos that show Fela as an incredibly strong jazz-based player. The cut "Don't Make Garan Garan" is a slow building groover – one that starts with spooky tinny keyboards, mixes in guitar comping, and then kicks into a nice tight percussion riff. The CD's completed by "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs. CD

Mable JohnStay Out Of The Kitchen ... CD
Stax (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 18.99
Amazing under-discovered soul – a huge collection of late 60s recordings by Mable John – probably best known for her work with the Raelettes, or her earlier sides at Motown – but heard here in a pivotal time between those two chapters in her career! A few of the tracks on the set were issued as singles by Stax, but most of the material sat unissued for years – practically one of the greatest crimes in soul in the 60s, because there's a depth here that's tremendous – and a quality level that could have made Mable a huge star at the time. The sound here is pure 60s Stax all the way – extremely deep, and done with a lean, mean punch that's totally great – a perfect meeting of a massive vocal talent and a well-oiled studio system that could take a good singer and make her sound great! The set's a great introduction to Mable's genius – one that features notes on her career and a total of 26 rare tracks that include "Have Your Cake", "Sweet Devil", "Able Mable", "Stay Out of the Kitchen", "Drop On In", and "I'm Catching". The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Tracks are long, and groove with a jazzy flourish that we wouldn't have expected so strongly – hitting hard on plenty of nice nice numbers that include "Kash Register", "Do Your Thing", "Angel", "The Zero Point", and "Getting It Out Of My System". We're not sure we hear any failings at all here – as the music is completely compelling, right from the start – and one of the most sonically-intense records we've heard from reedman Mats Gustafsson in years! The album's a bit of an electro-acoustic outing – in that Mats plays tenor, baritone, bass, and slide saxophones – while Kurzmann processes his sounds, and works with the ppooll system – and even plays a rubberband and vocalizes at points! But the main crux of the record comes from the interplay between the reed sounds of Mats and electronic processing of Christof – which creates some beautiful textures and tones. Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... CD
Atlantic, 2002. Used ... $3.99
Missy and Timbaland (and the usual cast of guest stars) are back and hotter than ever before on Missy's fourth full length, much more of a hip hop record this time, with tons of old school party shouts and new school neo-electro production! Under Construction is kind of a concept album (don't worry, not in the Jethro Tull kind of way) with a theme that celebrates the hip hop golden age of the mid-to-late 80s but with a modern, probably timeless flavor. The status quo R&B that Missy can't seem to get out of her system is here only at a minimum – this is a hip hop record! Past guests like Method Man (turning in a great remake of "Bring The Pain"), Ludacris, and Jay Z show up as well as 50 Cent, Ms. Jade, Beyonce Knowles, and TLC – but as usual, no one steals the show from Mis and Tim. No one would claim Missy is the most scholarly of lyricists, but as a conduit for attitude and a spicy groove she can't be beat, plus her topical and scatological rhymes and choruses fit these hip hop party bumpers like a Kangol & a gold chain. Tons of shout outs to and samples of the old schoolers that are just way too true to be nostalgic, plus strong production from Timbaland that isn't afraid to risk his reputation as an innovator by referencing his influences. The duo may have produced more astoundingly great singles in the recent past, but this is Missy and Timbaland's magnum opus, as far as full lengths go. 13 tracks including "Work It", "Go To The Floor", "Bring The Pain" featuring Method Man, "Funky Fresh Dressed" featuring Ms Jade, "Slide", "Play That Beat", "Ain't That Funny", and more. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A wonderful collection of work from the always-great Momus – one of our favorite singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, a talent who really moves forward territory inspired by the work of Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, and George Brassens – and an artist who's given us so much incredible music during his career! The set really does a great job of spanning Momus' full career – from the acoustic start of his early Cherry Red albums and singles, to the open stylistic space of his music for Creation Records – where he shifted his ear for a catchy tune and sinister storyline into some really wonderful tracks – back to his return to Cherry Red and then formation of his own label – where he's continued to explore a fantastic array of topics with his undeniable wit. And in case you're wondering – the "public intellectual" title is a bit of a joke, taken from his classic "I Was A Maoist Intellectual" track from the 80s – but it's also somewhat fitting, given the incredible depth of his songwriting (although sadly, Momus has never hit the fame he deserves – which would make him a true public intellectual.) There's so many wonderful tracks on this set, we can't even count them all – and the collection's especially great for presenting some of the later Creation material that's been very hard to get in recent years. 3CD set features a whopping 56 tracks in all – plus notes on the tunes by Momus himself – and titles that include "Spacewalk", "Enlightenment", "The Ephephobe", "Paper Wraps Rock", "Flame Into Being", "The Homosexual", "How Do You Find My Sister", "Shaftesbury Avenue", "Summer Holiday 1999", "Ventriloquists & Dolls", "Born To Be Adored", "The Age Of Information", "London 1888", "The Art Creep", "The Hiker", "System Of Usher", "Widow Twanky", "Nervous Heartbeat", and "The Cheque's In The Post". Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99
Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. ✨✧ Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo ... LP
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. Cinevox/Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This package brings together some of the best cuts from those days, with an extra special Finders Keepers/Andy Votel ear for the weirdest and most unusual sounds – which creates an album that's plenty funky, but in ways that are very different from the usual US or European styles of the time. Basslines, heavy drums, spacey keyboards, and odd guitar sounds abound – and titles include "Electronic Sound", "Avangiu", "Godzilla", "Allucinazione Mistiche", "Death's Song", "Escape", "Vai Gorilla", "Night Club Dance", "The Hunt Down", and "Concessioni Naturali". Billy GriffinSystematic ... CD
Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $13.99
The third album in Billy Griffin's great run after leaving The Miracles – and a set that features some especially nice help from mellow groove maestro Leon Ware! Ware brings a depth to the record that takes it way past Billy's outdated look on the cover – that trademark ear for a killer midtempo groove that few other songwriters or producers could match – and which proves to be just the right setting for Billy's beautiful vocals! Instrumentation is heavy on beats and keyboards, with a definite electro approach – but there's a warmth here that goes way past the setting, both vocally and in the way the tunes come across. Titles include a remake of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" – plus "Can't Keep Running Away", "This Ain't Puppy Love", "Electrified", "Systematic", "Everybody Needs Somebody", and "Waiting To Touch". CD

Marge (France), 2001. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
The group name's a bit mysterious, but we can say that these guys definitely have an open approach to their music – one that really allows a lot of flow from the trumpet of Hugh Ragin, and the tenor and bass clarinet of Assif Tsahar! The group come together as a piano-less quartet – with Peter Kowald on bass and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – a wonderful lineup who take the music into richer, freer directions as well – with some especially strong contributions from Kowald and Drake! It's been awhile since we've heard Peter's bass in a setting this bold – and the result is wonderful – and Hamid is pretty fierce at times on the drums, although other moments feature some of his more lyrical percussion passages. Titles include a great long take on Ornette's "Lonely Woman" – plus "The Call", "Dream Weavers", "Standing Motion", "Fathers & Mothers", and "The Lizards In The Maze". CD

The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Lack Of Afro really seems to have tightened up his game – realizing that more can come from less – especially when it's focused on a sound this strong! Gone are some of the tricks and turns you might know from the LOA of years back – especially some of the mixes that circulated under that name – and instead, the album's got this solid soulful vibe that feels more like a deep funk combo, than a set of tracks that come mostly from the hands of producer/instrumentalist Adam Gibbons! Yet while Gibbons plays much of the music on the set, he's also got some help from other funk players, too – and singers who include Joss Stone, Elliott Cole, Emma Noble, and Juliette Ashby – who help emphasize some of the more retro soul elements in the music, but with the collaborative vibe of singers in a soundsystem. Titles include "Hello Baby", "I Got The Rhythm", "Nothing Personal", "Take You Home", "One World", "The Bakery Girl", "Now I Feel Good", "Walk In The Sun", and "Peace & Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. The whole thing's a really fresh take on the format – very different than some of the too-iconic efforts that try to systemize country too much, with a great run between high and low, popular and obscure. The book features 51 chapters, each on very different topics – penned by folks as diverse as Charlie Louvin, Johnny Cash, Ralph Peer, Cecil B Sharp, John Lomax, Tom T Hall, George Will, and countless others. 382 pages, softcover. Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD

Adrian Younge is a man of many modes – soundtrack funk, to hip hop, to a great project with The Delfonics – and here, he opens up yet another side of his genius – to give us a set of tracks that feel as if they could have been lifted from some great early 80s electronic film score! The music is heavy on keyboards and electronics, but gets the special sort of production that Younge brings to his projects – one that augments some of the richer, more soulful styles in the music – and keeps this record away from the coldness of other recent attempts to hit such a vibe! Some moments are darker, others are more song-based – with almost an Italian Cosmic club approach, right down to use of vocoder on the lyrics – and the album's year another feather in Mr Younge's ever-growing cap. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. VariousRio Baile Funk – Favela Booty Beats ... CD
Essay (Germany), 2003. Used ... $6.99
The real sound of Brazilian soul in the 21st Century – the kind of grooves that are going down on soundsystems up in the favelas in Rio, not the hipster bars down at the beaches! There's an unabashed love of American R&B on these tracks – not classic soul from the 70s, or hipster soul from the underground – but mainstream grooves from points south, inspired by Miami bass, crunk, crossover house, mainstream hip hop, and even a bit of dancehall. The CD's a great overview of the music that currently goes under the name of "funk" in Brazilian culture – a sound that's very different than the use of the term by American musicians – and although we've described many of the roots of the music in American terms, there's also some distinctly Brazilian influences that resonate strongly – and which make for the kind of evolutionary sound that happened when Jamaicans first started trying to recreate American R&B, then took things in a whole new direction. Titles include "Mengao 2000" by Furacao 2000, "Cavalo De Pau" by Paty, "Pocotocopo" by MC Serginho, "Tapinha" by MCs Naldinho & Beth, "Planeta Dominado" by SD Boys, "Cerol Na Mao" by Dennis DJ, "O Baile Todo" by Bonde Do Tiagro, and "Mulher Coca Cola" by Ricardo E Esquito.
