SystemSweat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mirage/FTG, 1983. New Copy ... On April 16, 2016 (delayed)
The big breakout record for The System – one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own – and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn't need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single "You Are In My System" – a cut that's wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include "Sweat", "It's Passion", "Now I Am Electric", "Stand Up & Cheer", and "I Won't Let Go". This expanded version combines the original album with six bonus extended remixes – including "Promises Can Break", "This Is For You", and "Don't Disturb This Groove". CD

Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare and unreleased Lee Perry dubplate mixes – brilliant productions from the creatively fruitful, boundary busting 70s years – with the mighty Upsetters and numbers featuring Junior Murvin, Candy Mackenzie, Leo Graham, Jimmy Riley, George Faith, Jack Lord and The Silvertones! This is the second Sound System Scratch compilation from the deep treasure diggers at Pressure Sounds – who have again assembled staggeringly adventurous and hard to find Scratch productions from an amazing period at Black Ark. Wrasse, 1990/1992. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Late Fela – but great Fela! Underground System was released in 1992, but it sounds like Fela's best work from the late 70s – grooving away at a triple-time beat on two incredible tracks, "Underground System" and "Pansa Pansa". "Pansa Pansa" is especially great, as it's got these Cecil Taylor-esque piano lines over funky beats at the beginning – very odd, but very groovy! The CD also features the 26 minute bonus track "Confusion Break Bones", lifted from the ODOO album, and a compelling extended number with a weirdly off-kilter beat! CD

Christian Hermann & Michael SchmidtWii Love Arts – A Compendium Of Projects Inspired By Wii (hardcover) ... Book
Kehrer (Germany), 2007. New Copy ... $5.99 70.00
Nintendo's Wii gaming system has gone onto transform the role of the TV screen in household activity in the past decade or so – with a legacy that's also touched the world of visual arts as well! This book is a lavish, oversized art book that presents a range of creative work inspired by the Wii – paintings, photographs, drawings, street art, and even creative process that draw plenty from Wii and help transform the planet with an eye trained on the platform! Images are quite far from any sort of easy videogame references – and the full color book vividly moves far far past any Nintendo roots – and almost acts as a standalone volume on especially creative talents in the global underground. Book is very heavy, full color, 224 pages, oversize, and even comes with a special bookmark that's like the handle of a Wii controller! Book

Schema (Italy), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99
Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Schema groover Gerardo Frisina serves up a hand-picked batch of 16 tunes, mostly classic numbers from the late 60s and early 70s, pulled from the ranks of Italian soundtrack, jazz, and easy listening albums – all with a flair for making the bossa even groovier than it already is! Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! Titles include "Incontro All'Aereoporto" by Piero Piccioni, "Allora, Il Treno" by Bruno Nicolai & Edda Dell'Orso, "Avances" by Gerardo Frisina, "Wind" by Red Redford Sound System One, "Bossalonga" by Mustang, "Unreality Landscape" by Angel Pocho Gatti, "Susan Theme" by Daniele Patucchi, "Per Lei" by Stefano Torossi, and "Colpa Tua" by Giancarlo Gazzani. A selection of contemporary grooves from Brazil – heavy-grooving numbers with a sound that's a lot more urban than classic bossa and samba, yet which also do a strong job of mixing in some traditional elements that still strongly have a South American flavor! A number of the artists on the set are part of the groundbreaking cadre of artists on the Trama label, and others are from more disparate sources, but paired up nicely for a really unified groove! Titles include "Coco Nutz Mass" by Botecoletro, "Cuba" by Otto, "Roda Rodete Rodiano (Zambo mix)" by Chico Science & Bio, "Catimbo (rmix)" by Dj Dolores, "Funquiada" by Drumagick, "Bebete Vaobora" by Wilson Simoninha, "Nervosa" by Funk Como Le Gusta, "2736 km" by Mamelo Sound System, and "Piraquara" by Joao Parahyba. A strange mixture of triggered sound samples and improvised music from Alvin Curran – working here on a range of keyboards and elctronics, alongside Mauro Tespio on trumpet, bells, and other instruments – and Paolo Tofani on a laptop system too! Curran draws on sounds he's recorded over the course of decades – which are then filtered through in live performance, and improvised alongside the musicians – all with the kind of compelling textures and tones you'll know from his older recordings. Columbia, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". ✨✧ Mable JohnStay Out Of The Kitchen ... CD
Stax (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing under-discovered soul – a huge collection of late 60s recordings by Mable John – probably best known for her work with the Raelettes, or her earlier sides at Motown – but heard here in a pivotal time between those two chapters in her career! A few of the tracks on the set were issued as singles by Stax, but most of the material sat unissued for years – practically one of the greatest crimes in soul in the 60s, because there's a depth here that's tremendous – and a quality level that could have made Mable a huge star at the time. The sound here is pure 60s Stax all the way – extremely deep, and done with a lean, mean punch that's totally great – a perfect meeting of a massive vocal talent and a well-oiled studio system that could take a good singer and make her sound great! The set's a great introduction to Mable's genius – one that features notes on her career and a total of 26 rare tracks that include "Have Your Cake", "Sweet Devil", "Able Mable", "Stay Out of the Kitchen", "Drop On In", and "I'm Catching". ✨✧ Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Proyecto AProyecto A/Proyecto B (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sommor (Spain), 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the grooviest work we've ever heard from the Spanish scene of the 70s – a record by a group who start out in psych, but also add in a lot of MPS-like touches too – funky elements at the bottom, cool organ lines and jazzy bits on the top, and an overall groove that's much more like some of the best German jazz-rock-psych experiments of the time! Lyrics are all in Spanish, and leap along with the lively instrumentation from the group – and often have a dark vibe that's offset by some of the tenor and trombone in the lineup! The song titles line up like a trip through the solar system – and include "A Marte", "A Neptuno", "A Jupiter", "A Mercurio", "A Saturno", and "A Pluton". Great 2LP package also includes Proyecto B – the never-issued album from 1974, which is even funkier overall – with loads of jazzy flute lines, sweet keyboards, and heavy drums! ✨✧ Cecil TaylorUnit Structures ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". Crimson (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The 80s were a huge decade for the 12" single – with a shift at the start of the decade to really unlock the possibilities in the format, to a move near the 90s where the format was virtually a standalone record itself – sometimes more important than full length albums by some artists! This set brings together loads of important tracks from that moment – music that begins in early 80s club, and moves through towards that time when a lot more American house was influencing the groove, and when producers had more than enough new technology on their hands to really open up a tune! Titles include "Beat Dis (extended dis)" by Bomb The Bass, "People Hold On (12" version)" by Coldcut with Lisa Stansfield, "Rockit (12" mix)" by Herbie Hancock, "I'll House You (Gee St reconstruction mix)" by Jungle Brothers, "Jump To It (12" mix)" by Aretha Franklin, "Theme From S'Express (12" version)" by S'Express, "Just Be Good To Me (12" ext)" by SOS Band, "I Really Didn't Mean It (12" mix)" by Luther Vandross, "Living In America (ext R&B dance mix)" by James Brown, "System Addict (M&M rmx)" by Five Star, "Lover Boy (12" ext)" by Billy Ocean, "Just An Illusion (ext)" by Imagination, "Lovely Day (88 rmx 12" version)" by Bill Withers, and "Saturday Love (12" version)" by Cherrelle & Alexander O'Neal. Amadana (Japan), 2015. New Item ... Out Of Stock
A totally wonderful little turntable – solid, stylish, and totally self-contained – with a strong sound that's a lot better than most other plug-and-play models on the market! The first thing that stands out with this one is the base – which is very solid, and has a wood veneer – which seems to give the whole thing a much warmer sound than the mostly-plastic models on the market, especially when you turn the volume way up! The speakers are hidden in the legs – isolated from the platter in a nice way that causes a lot less interference when the volume is up – and the platter features a belt drive, which further reduces distortion – and makes for very solid playback. The turntable spins at 33, 45, and 78rpm – and it comes with a ceramic stereo cartridge and stylus, for easy play right out of the box. And although you can play the unit on its own, it also has RCA outputs that allow you to plug into a full stereo system – as well as a USB output, with MP3 software too. The whole thing's capped off by a great dust cover that keeps the record free of dust while playing – and we'd honestly be hard-pressed to find a better self-contained turntable on the market today! Spaced-out electronics from Matsuo Ohno – a composer who's probably best known for his work on the Astro Boy cartoons, but who recorded this rare non-soundtrack album in 1978! Overall, though, the set's still got a very soundtrack-like feel – or maybe sound-scape, or even space-scape – given that the electronics have this slow-building quality that really fits the nebula image on the cover – gently shifting tones and pulses which often move forth out of quietness, then come together with a really dark feel overall. The whole thing's pretty darn spooky – but we mean that in a good way – and titles include "Pulsation", "Universal Is Born", "A Brief Tour Of The Solar System & Interplanetary Space", "N Dimension", and "Mandala". Amazing package too – comes with this bonus tiny 3" CD – replicating the 1970 release of Play On Animals, originally only a flexi-disc record, and filled with more great electronics! CD

Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using a record cleaning machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! Comes with basic unit, power cord, brush, and fluid for cleaning a big amount of records. (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Turntable

The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This package brings together some of the best cuts from those days, with an extra special Finders Keepers/Andy Votel ear for the weirdest and most unusual sounds – which creates an album that's plenty funky, but in ways that are very different from the usual US or European styles of the time. The third album in Billy Griffin's great run after leaving The Miracles – and a set that features some especially nice help from mellow groove maestro Leon Ware! Ware brings a depth to the record that takes it way past Billy's outdated look on the cover – that trademark ear for a killer midtempo groove that few other songwriters or producers could match – and which proves to be just the right setting for Billy's beautiful vocals! Instrumentation is heavy on beats and keyboards, with a definite electro approach – but there's a warmth here that goes way past the setting, both vocally and in the way the tunes come across. The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD

King TubbyKing Tubby Vs Channel One – Dub Soundclash ... LP
Jamaican Recordings (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... About March 20, 2016 (delayed)
Heavy dubs from two classic sources – King Tubby's studios and Channel One – served up here in a special soundclash session from Bunny Lee and Jah Stich! The tunes here are nicely abstracted and expanded – laid out back to back in one swirling mass of heady sounds that seems especially heavy on the bass – so much so that our speakers were rumbling off the shelf while we were writing up this review! Exactly the kind of tracks that would have set fire to a streetside soundsystem back in the day – but equally great served up here for at-home listening too. Titles include "Another Extra From The King", "Channel 1 Feel This", "Musical Shock Attack Channel One", "More Of King Tubby's Scientist Sound Call Earthquake", "Be Channel 1 Guest", "King Tubby & Scientist Is Here To Stay", and "Straight To King Tubby & Channel 1 Head". VariousStrange Games & Funky Things 5 Smoking 70s Soul & Rare Grooves – DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... On May 13, 2016
One of the hippest installments so far in this legendary series – an excellent back of laidback funky cuts – super-sweet stuff, with a great lowdown sort of groove! The rhythms here are all nice and mellow, but the cuts are still plenty funky – right at the right sort of pace to be the kind of older funk numbers that inspire the hip hop generation – usually with a different sort of sound than the 70s funk that was hitting the mainstream back in the day! Spinna's done a great job with the track selection here – proving that even if you're digging in familiar territory, picking the right cuts is still a hell of an art – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Family Tree" by Family Tree, "Get It Up For Love" by Ned Doheny, "Sweet Stuff" by Sylvia, "Capricorn Rising" by Richard Evans, "Motherland" by Sylvia St James, "Cameo" by Eddie Senay, "For The Love Of Money" by Philly Armada Orchestra, "Brazilian Skies" by Bill Summers, "Asafo Beesuon/Obaa Yaa Aye Me Bone" by CK Mann & His Carousel 7, "Hunt Up Wind" by Hiroshi Fukimura, "Always There" by Wood Brass & Steel, "War Is Coming" by War, "Hands Of Time" by Perfect Circle, and "I Ain't Got The Love" by The Ambassadors. Tomato, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded by avant violinist Leroy Jenkins – a very politically-driven record that has even more power than some of his earlier works! Jenkins' vision is very sharp here – expressed brilliantly in the album's side-long title track, with help from Andrew Cyrille on percussion, Anthony Davis on piano and electric piano, George Lewis on trombone and electronics, and Richard Teitelbaum on moog and moog systems! The album also features some shorter tracks by an acoustic group without Tietelbaum – titles that include "Dancing On A Melody", "Kick Back Stomp", "Through The Ages Jehovah, and "The Clowns". ✨✧ Lee Perry & OthersMr Perry I Presume ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. ✨✧ Lee Scratch Perry & FriendsBlack Ark Years – The Jamaican 7 Inches ... CD
Trojan (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by the mighty Lee Perry – a searing selection of 44 seven inch singles – all of which were well-tuned to boom out of Kingston sound systems back in the day! There's a sense of focus here that's wonderful – still all the odd, dubby twists and turns that make Perry's music so great – but honed down into the space of tight cuts that really helped redefine the role of the 45rpm single in Jamaican music! Lee takes the lead on a few cuts, and sits behind the controls of Black Ark on all the others – and titles include "Vibrate Onn (Jamaican mix)" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "It Hurts So Good" by Susan Cadogan, "Dreader Locks" by Junior Byles & Lee Perry, "Police & Thief" by Junior Murvin, "Ital Corner" by Prince Jazzbo, "Sipple Out Deh (Jamaican mix)" by Max Romeo, "Down Here In Babylon" by Brent Dowe, "Three Blind Mice" by Max Romeo, "Land Of Love" by The Sons Of Light, "Travelling" by Debra Keese & The Black Five, and "Think So" by The Meditations. ✨✧ VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. ✨✧ Stanislas TohonDans Le Tchink Systeme (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wicked work from Stanislas Tohon – a sweet batch of skittish grooves that occasionally include some William Onyebor-like electronics! The tracks are all upbeat and uptempo – fast-riffing rhythms that spin out wonderfully right from the start – with some vocals on most numbers, but also plenty of room for instrumental solos – including sax lines, keyboard parts, and some especially cool moogy bits! Rhythms are less Afro Funk than older modes, but kicked up a few notches – with boundless energy that never lets up throughout the set. Titles include "Yallow 2", "Dja Dja Dja", "O Kou", "Africa", and "Paix Lo". LP, Vinyl record album
