✨✧ Freedom Sounds featuring Wayne HendersonSoul Sound System ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! This set's a little more ambitious than the group's first album – with a number of tracks that groove in a very strong Latin jazz mode, sounding a lot like some of the best work on Atlantic at the time by Mongo Santamaria, Hubert Laws, and others. Henderson's trombone is still a key solo instrument, but the album also features some incredible sax work from Willie Gresham – a player we know little about, but who makes the album cook in the same fantastic way that Hubert Laws and Sonny Fortune did for Mongo's best work of the 60s! The grooves are very right-on, with plenty of excellent percussion work – and titles include the originals "Love-Out", "Behold The Day", and "Soul Sound System", plus some groovy covers, like "All You Need is Love", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "Are You Sure?" – all done with a great Latiny groove! Johnny HammondDon't Let The System Get You ... LP
Milestone, 1978. Very Good ... $9.99
Post-Mizell, and less jazz fusiony than Johnny's mid 70s work, but not a bad funk album! The title cut's a nice groover that has a sort of sing-song Eddie Harris funk feel, and which features Johnny Hammond complaining about "The System", and how it's out to get him. Other cuts include "Contact Funk", "Ann", "For People Only", and "Losing You". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Very Good+ ... $4.99
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireTouch The World (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1987. Used ... $11.99
Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". Roberta FlackOasis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1988. Used ... $9.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". Hardy KukukAtemnot (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A set recorded a few years after the big German prog heyday of the 70s – but a set that would be right at home with all the best classics from the time! Keyboardist Hardy Kukuk handles a huge host of keyboards – micro moog, Roland, and Yamaha keys – all in these long-flowing waves of sound that really stretch out, but with a quality that's often more in an extended space rock mode than some of the mellower, more spacious sounds that were then showing up in Germany – particulary on the Sky Records label. Most titles here are long enough to be featured on a vintage Brain album – and Hardy gets a bit of help from Andreas Schneider on congas and Klaus Bloch on guitar and "ping pong system". Titles include "So Mal", "Takt Der Zeit", "Erdtraumer", and "Fruhling 81". LP, Vinyl record album

A huge moment for LL Cool J – and a set that has him balanced nicely between the sharp rhymes of his roots and the rising stardom of his role in the larger world of R&B as well! Marley Marl produced, and the whole thing's still got a nice edge – even though some of these tunes entered the mainstream and got LL quite a bit of play in areas he'd never reached before. Hits include "Around The Way Girl", "Mama Said Knock You Out", "To Da Break Of Dawn", "Jinglin Baby", and "6 Minutes Of Pleasure – and other cuts include "Milky Cereal", "Eat Em Up L Chill", "Mr Good Bar", "The Boomin System", "Cheesy Rat Blues", and "Farmers Blvd". 2CD deluxe edition features 14 more bonus tracks – including "Strictly Business", "Mama Said Knock You Out (hot mix)", "Mama Said Knock You Out (4am mix)", "Mama Said Knock You Out (for steering pleasure)", "Around The Way Girl (Untouchables rmx)", "Around The Way Girl (Crypt 12" mix)", "Around The Way Girl (Jerv's 12" rub)", "Around The Way Girl (Marley rub)", "To Da Break Of Dawn (bug out mix)", "Boomin System (underground rmx)", "6 Minutes Of Pleasure (hey girl rmx)", and "Eat Em Up L Chill (chill rmx)". Cecil TaylorUnit Structures (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.98
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". VPI 16.5Amazing Record Cleaning Machine! (115 Volt Version) ... Misc
VPI, 2004. New Copy ... $649.99 699.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using this amazing machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested VPI system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Misc
(Please Note: unlike other items we carry, this one is not actually in stock. We need to special order it for you, but we usually get them in a month.)

Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... On July 31, 2015
Led Zeppelin walk back just a bit on their more stylistically sprawling tendencies for this one – and it's a fine set of hard-grooving rock from these uber-legends! We're not sure if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or if they just simply wanted to get out there and kick ass this time, but that's indeed what they do. It's still got some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere" and "Tea For One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EG (UK), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit academic, but still pretty darn beautiful! This early instrumental release by Eno was part of Island's short-lived series of modern music from the mid 70s – and it's the first time that Eno really explored his farther-reaching ideas on record. The set features 2 pieces: "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer; and "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel", which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. ✨✧ Mable JohnStay Out Of The Kitchen ... CD
Stax, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing under-discovered soul – a huge collection of late 60s recordings by Mable John – probably best known for her work with the Raelettes, or her earlier sides at Motown – but heard here in a pivotal time between those two chapters in her career! A few of the tracks on the set were issued as singles by Stax, but most of the material sat unissued for years – practically one of the greatest crimes in soul in the 60s, because there's a depth here that's tremendous – and a quality level that could have made Mable a huge star at the time. The sound here is pure 60s Stax all the way – extremely deep, and done with a lean, mean punch that's totally great – a perfect meeting of a massive vocal talent and a well-oiled studio system that could take a good singer and make her sound great! The set's a great introduction to Mable's genius – one that features notes on her career and a total of 25 rare tracks that include "Have Your Cake", "Sweet Devil", "Able Mable", "Stay Out Of The Kitchen", "Drop On In", and "It's Catching". A nice bit of spacey, funky 80s groove from Zinc – with some catchier pop touches thrown into the mix as well – a sound that's almost in the same territory as The System, given the record's use of beats, keys, and guitar! The album's co-produced by Jacques Fred Petrus and Mauro Malavasi – the latter of whom seems to be the main force behind the group, given his work on arrangements and keyboards on the set. It's nicely geared for the dancefloor, too – with all the songs rolling well past the 5 minute mark – and include "Street Level", "I'll Never Stop", "Livin In The Boogie Now", "Amazon", "Phunkulation", and "I'll Take My Chances". The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

Some of the greatest work ever recorded by the mighty Lee Perry – a searing selection of 44 seven inch singles – all of which were well-tuned to boom out of Kingston sound systems back in the day! VariousFunk Globo – The Sound Of Neo Baile ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $12.99
Contempoary Brazilian grooves compiled by the folks at Funk Globo – blistering batch of beats and basslines – all served up with a very intense sound! The music here isn't the trendy, intellectual style coming from Brazil in recent years – but instead the sort that plays big at house parties, underground clubs, and even street festivals where the booming beats are a perfect match for a well-crafted soundsystem! In fact, the sound here is so heavy, you might want to turn down the bass a bit on your stereo before playback – lest you blast the dishes off your shelves in the kitchen. Titles include "Vai Danada" by Guto De Almeida, "Saca Me Desse Banze" by Gato Preto, "Cicadas' Dance" by Chuck Upbeat, "Gostoso" by Ophex, and "Xao Trap" by DJ Comrade. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cut Chemist/Madlib/Billy WootenBunky's Pick (7 Minutes & 48 Seconds Of Funk)/6 Variations Of In The Rain/In The Rain ... CD
Stones Throw, 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky mad work from Cut Chemist and Madlib – with a sound that's right off of a classic funky 45, filtered through a South Bronx soundsystem! "6 Variations Of In The Rain" is based around Billy Wooten's famous jazz vibes version of The Dramatics cut "In The Rain" – and it takes the tune, turns it around, opens it up, and creates this amazing long tapestry of beats and vibes! "Bunky's Pick" picks its title from the star on the old singles produced by Bill Bunky Sheppard – and it mixes together drum breaks with a classic sound, creating seven minutes and forty eight seconds of heavy funky breaks! Plus, the CD version also includes the original version of "In The Rain" by Billy Wooten – a stone mellow jazzy classic! Ground breaking stuff – and another feather in the cap of the soon-to-be-legendary Stones Throw label! CD

✨✧ VariousRough Guide To Latin Rare Groove Vol 2 ... CD
Rough Guide, Late 60s/Early 70s/2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy Latin grooves – served up with plenty of funk, jazz, and soul in the mix – and put together as a collection that's even better than the first volume in this series! DJ Pablo Yglesias seems to get sharper ears each time we tune into one of his projects – and this time around, he's come up with a massive batch of Latin tracks that goes way past the obvious – to include some really rare gems that move past the usual Fania classics. The set list is wonderful – and in keeping with Pablo's support of the global underground, there's also some contemporary cuts in the mix, but which sit perfectly next to the rare vintage tracks. Titles include "Camuri Chico" by Conjunto Papa Upa, "Un Clavel Una Tarjeta Y Una Lapiz" by Los Kenya, "Papo Boogaloo" by Papo Y Su Combo, "Steal Your Love" by Rene Lopez, "Tokuta (Kid Gusto rmx)" by Jungle Fire, "Yo Voy Ganao" by Systema Solar, "Fantasia Latina" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, and "Mi Chica Se Vuelve Loca" by Carlos Hayre Y Su Orquesta. ✨✧ Glenn Branca/John GiornoWho You Staring At? ... LP
Giorno Poetry Systems, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the classic albums on Giorno Poetry – and a record that's got some pretty nice work by Glen Branca! Side one is Branca's work "Bad Smells", which is a piece written for Twyla Tharp, and which has a bit more lively feel than some of Branca's other work from the time. The piece features playing by Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Branca himself. Side two's got some of Giorno's groovy overdub poetry pieces – a bit dated, but stuff that we're actually still kind of fond of. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dazz BandJoystick/Jukebox ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1983/1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD

✨✧ New MastersoundsIntroduction To The New Mastersounds Vol 2 ... CD
Legere (Germany), 2000s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's almost no introduction needed to the New Mastersounds – given how much greatness the group has given us over the years – a perennial favorite here at Dusty Groove, both with customers and our own soundsystems as well! But even if you know these funky stalwarts, there's still plenty here to love – as the collection does a good job of bringing together some harder-to-find cuts – work the group has done with other artists over the past decade or so – and some singles and compilation tracks that are hard to find too – great stuff to track down if you missed the original releases! As usual, the guitar of Eddie Roberts smokes the grooves brilliantly – as does the organ, bass, and drums – and titles include "Kuna Matata", "Make Me Proud", "One Note Brown (original version)", "Can You Get It (rmx)", "I Mean It So", "King Comforter", "Talk The Talk", "Bring It On", "You Got It All", and "Wack". ✨✧ VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. ✨✧ Donna SummerAll Systems Go (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Geffen/Driven By The Music (UK), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
80s keyboard maestro Harold Faltermeyer gives Donna Summer plenty of help here – with the kind of catchy, hook-heavy lines that made his famous soundtrack work such a hit at the time! Harold had played on previous Summer albums, but really takes the lead here with a snapping, syncopated approach to rhythms – one that bubbles along nicely on titles that include "All Systems Go", "Dinner With Gershwin", "Only The Fool Survives", "Bad Reputation", "Love Shock", and "Jeremy". Very nice reissue – with a heavy book-style cover, lots of liner notes, and bonus tracks that include "Tearin Down The Walls", "All Systems Go (ext rmx)", "Dinner With Gershwin (ext version)", "Only The Fool Survives (edit)", and "Dinner With Gershwin (inst)".
