✨✧ Bob Seger SystemRamblin' Gamblin' Man ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later green label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Jack McDuffHeatin' System ... LP
Cadet, 1972. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99
One of the most amazing, expansive albums ever recorded by Brother Jack McDuff – a session that we'd rank right up there with his classic Moon Rappin for Blue Note – and which has an equally stretched out feel! Although some of Jack's other albums for Cadet in the 70s have a bit more of a keyboard-centric feel, this album's heavy on Hammond all the way through – played by McDuff with sharp edges, soaring solos, and that amazing sense of timing that few other players could match! But possibly even more amazing is the group on the set – a hip batch of cats who include Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones on bass, Don Myrick and Dave Young on tenor and flute, Bobby Alston on trumpet, Marty Roberts on guitar, and Derf Reklaw on percussion – all working wonderfully with McDuff arrangements on some very long tunes! The double-length nature of the 2LP record really lets the group stretch out nicely – and there's a tremendous sense of energy throughout – almost a mode that matches Charles Earland's Leaving This Planet album. Titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Radiation", "The Prophet", "The Boiler", "Pressure Gauge", "The Heatin System", "Elmo Tucker", and "Lonesome Is The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jiri Stivin & Rudolf DasekSystem Tandem (Japo) ... LP
Supraphon/Japo (Germany), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cool duets between Czech reedman Jiri Stivin and guitarist Rudolf Dasek – a set with a lot fuller feel than you might expect! The work is straight, and never too outside – and although there's no drums or bass in the performance, there's an inherently rhythmic sensibility to most numbers – that modal sort of style that Stivin always brings to his reeds, especially on 70s recordings like this! Jiri plays alto, soprano, flute, and a bit of recorder – and there's a dynamic energy to the record that's really wonderful. Titles include "What's Your Story", "Puzzle Game", "Puddle On The Muddle", "Hey Man", and "Shepherd Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freedom Sounds featuring Wayne HendersonSoul Sound System ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! This set's a little more ambitious than the group's first album – with a number of tracks that groove in a very strong Latin jazz mode, sounding a lot like some of the best work on Atlantic at the time by Mongo Santamaria, Hubert Laws, and others. Henderson's trombone is still a key solo instrument, but the album also features some incredible sax work from Willie Gresham – a player we know little about, but who makes the album cook in the same fantastic way that Hubert Laws and Sonny Fortune did for Mongo's best work of the 60s! The grooves are very right-on, with plenty of excellent percussion work – and titles include the originals "Love-Out", "Behold The Day", and "Soul Sound System", plus some groovy covers, like "All You Need is Love", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "Are You Sure?" – all done with a great Latiny groove! ✨✧ Peter SchillingError In The System (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Big Break (UK), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An 80s electro-pop classic from Peter Schilling – one of a handful of German artists who managed to crack the record racks over here at the time – thanks to his strong use of English language on most of the tracks, and his classic "Major Tom" track, which was a nice reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity"! There's a nicely catchy vibe to the record – not as commercial as Nena, but more straightforward than Trio – although very much in the territory of both, given the way that Schilling uses spare electric rhythms and keyboards on most of the instrumentation. In addition to the two-part version of "Major Tom (Coming Home)", other titles include "Only Dreams", "Lifetime Guarantee", "I Have No Desire", "Let's Play", "Error In The System", and "The Noah Plan". CD features 18 more bonus tracks – a few mixes of "Major Tom", plus German cuts "Ich Hab Keine Lust", "Die Wuste Lebt", "Fast Alles Konstruiert", "Dawn Trugt Der Schein", and "Fehler Im System". CD

A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage – featuring him with David Tudor weaving an eclectic mix sounds on a sound system – recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA! The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are even decades later – it's almost hard to believe this wildly ambitious freeform kind of music is a product of the mid 60s! Earth Wind & FireTouch The World ... LP
Columbia, 1987. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". Fela & Africa 70Ikoyi Blindness/Kalakuta Show ... CD
Barclay/MCA (France), 1976. Used ... $6.99
Fela and Africa 70 are honed to razor-sharp perfection on these 2 albums from 1976! There's some incredible work on tenor sax on some of the cuts – especially "Ikoyi Blindness" and "Kalakuta Show", both of which begin with incredibly well-wrought solos that show Fela as an incredibly strong jazz-based player. The cut "Don't Make Garan Garan" is a slow building groover – one that starts with spooky tinny keyboards, mixes in guitar comping, and then kicks into a nice tight percussion riff. The CD's completed by "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs. CD

Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". The title of the record may sound a bit scientific, but the music within has a very human appeal – sweet funky rhythms forged by the team of DJ Rocca and Stefano Ghittoni – the latter of whom you might know from previous productions with The Dining Rooms! The sound here is maybe an even more stripped-down take on that group's approach – very classic in the core elements used, but very contemporary in presentation overall – almost with a lean, very rhythmic approach that takes us back to the earliest years of Italo House – especially in the warmth of the tunes – but with a vibe that's also much more 21st Century overall! FM3, New Item ... About January 20, 2017 (delayed)
An amazing version of this ultra-cool item – the legendary Buddha Machine, which has been around for many years in a number of incarnations – but may well have found the perfect expression in the music of Philip Glass! The original Buddha box was a small transistor radio-like object that contained sound samples to aid in meditation – mostly chants and tones that were minimal, and would repeat. Yet this version features some beautiful musical lines from the works of composer Philip Glass – piano passages mostly, but with some organ and vocal bits too – all with a warmth and sense of color that other boxes never had. And there's also something very special about the presentation – extremely minimal, even in the sonic range that comes from the small speaker – which is a very different think than listening to the music of Glass through a full stereo system – much more organic and spatially relevant! Mack Avenue, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Columbia, 1970s/1980s. Used 31 CDs ... $79.99
A really really amazing little set – and a package that goes way beyond most other complete album collections on the market! First off, this one is REALLY complete – as it not only features all of Herbie Hancock's Columbia albums from the US, but also his rare Japanese-only records, and key sessions with other artists like the VSOP group, singer Kimiko Kasai, and pianist Chick Corea – all wrapped up in a totally cool box that features a 200 page book, and tiny LP sleeve versions of each individual album! There's a number of albums never issued in the US, and a few others are making their US debut on CD too – mixed here with key classics, and some others that haven't been in print for years. Herbie's sense of vision and genius hold strong throughout – from electric to acoustic to electric and more acoustic modes recorded over a 16 year span between 1972 and 1988. Albums include Sextant, Head Hunters, Dedication, Thrust, Death Wish, Flood, Man-Child, Secrets, VSOP, Herbie Hancock Trio, VSOP The Quintet, VSOP Tempest In The Colosseum, An Evening With Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea, Sunlight, Feets Don't Fail Me Now, Directstep, Live Under The Stars, Five Stars, Butterfly (with Kimiko Kasai), Monster, Mr Hands, Magic Windows, Herbie Hancock Trio with Ron Carter & Tony Williams, Quartet, Lite Me Up, Future Shock, Sound System, Village Life (with Foday Musa Suso), Round Midnight (soundtrack), and Perfect Machine. The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. We're not sure we hear any failings at all here – as the music is completely compelling, right from the start – and one of the most sonically-intense records we've heard from reedman Mats Gustafsson in years! The album's a bit of an electro-acoustic outing – in that Mats plays tenor, baritone, bass, and slide saxophones – while Kurzmann processes his sounds, and works with the ppooll system – and even plays a rubberband and vocalizes at points! But the main crux of the record comes from the interplay between the reed sounds of Mats and electronic processing of Christof – which creates some beautiful textures and tones. Capitol, 1977. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". LP, Vinyl record album

Sure, it's not McDuff's funkiest record – but this is an excellent batch of smooth soulful tunes that show that McDuff was perfect in just about any setting! The core group on the set is Jack's Heatin' System ensemble – with Joe Farrell on saxes and Phil Upchurch on guitar – but they're augmented by some cool spacey fusion arrangements that sort of feel like late 70s slick jazz sides for Mercury or Columbia. The style works great with McDuff's keyboards – and were the record pushed at a better level, it would have put Jack up there with some of the smooth jazz stars of the 70s. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99
A wonderful collection of work from the always-great Momus – one of our favorite singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, a talent who really moves forward territory inspired by the work of Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, and George Brassens – and an artist who's given us so much incredible music during his career! The set really does a great job of spanning Momus' full career – from the acoustic start of his early Cherry Red albums and singles, to the open stylistic space of his music for Creation Records – where he shifted his ear for a catchy tune and sinister storyline into some really wonderful tracks – back to his return to Cherry Red and then formation of his own label – where he's continued to explore a fantastic array of topics with his undeniable wit. And in case you're wondering – the "public intellectual" title is a bit of a joke, taken from his classic "I Was A Maoist Intellectual" track from the 80s – but it's also somewhat fitting, given the incredible depth of his songwriting (although sadly, Momus has never hit the fame he deserves – which would make him a true public intellectual.) There's so many wonderful tracks on this set, we can't even count them all – and the collection's especially great for presenting some of the later Creation material that's been very hard to get in recent years. 3CD set features a whopping 56 tracks in all – plus notes on the tunes by Momus himself – and titles that include "Spacewalk", "Enlightenment", "The Ephephobe", "Paper Wraps Rock", "Flame Into Being", "The Homosexual", "How Do You Find My Sister", "Shaftesbury Avenue", "Summer Holiday 1999", "Ventriloquists & Dolls", "Born To Be Adored", "The Age Of Information", "London 1888", "The Art Creep", "The Hiker", "System Of Usher", "Widow Twanky", "Nervous Heartbeat", and "The Cheque's In The Post". Cinevox/Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This package brings together some of the best cuts from those days, with an extra special Finders Keepers/Andy Votel ear for the weirdest and most unusual sounds – which creates an album that's plenty funky, but in ways that are very different from the usual US or European styles of the time. ✨✧ Matthew Shipp with Matt ManeriGravitational Systems ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice little improvisional duo set – pairing modern avant pianist Matthew Shipp with violinist Mat Maneri, who also works with Shipp in his String Trio sessions – working here in a setting that finds them unafraid to tackle an eerie melody within the deliberately spare setting! The duo works with silence in a really riveting way on these tracks, revolving with the open spaces as much as each other, and finding a really great sound! They tackle the traditional "Greensleeves" plus Coltrane's "Naima" – which more or less bookend the wonderful improvisations that fall between! Other tracks include "Elasticity", "Series Of Planes", "Knots", "Notes", "Two Elephants", "Landscape Harmony", "Forcefield", and "Graviational Systems". CD

✨✧ Open Systems Quartet (Tsahar/Ragin/Kowald/Drake)Open Systems Quartet ... CD
Marge (France), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The group name's a bit mysterious, but we can say that these guys definitely have an open approach to their music – one that really allows a lot of flow from the trumpet of Hugh Ragin, and the tenor and bass clarinet of Assif Tsahar! The group come together as a piano-less quartet – with Peter Kowald on bass and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – a wonderful lineup who take the music into richer, freer directions as well – with some especially strong contributions from Kowald and Drake! It's been awhile since we've heard Peter's bass in a setting this bold – and the result is wonderful – and Hamid is pretty fierce at times on the drums, although other moments feature some of his more lyrical percussion passages. Titles include a great long take on Ornette's "Lonely Woman" – plus "The Call", "Dream Weavers", "Standing Motion", "Fathers & Mothers", and "The Lizards In The Maze". CD

Cinevox/Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Basslines, heavy drums, spacey keyboards, and odd guitar sounds abound – and titles include "Electronic Sound", "Avangiu", "Godzilla", "Allucinazione Mistiche", "Death's Song", "Escape", "Vai Gorilla", "Night Club Dance", "The Hunt Down", and "Concessioni Naturali". Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! LP, Vinyl record album

YazzWanted (3CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. New Copy 3CD ... $13.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD

Adrian Younge Presents The Electronique VoidBlack Noise ... CD
Linear Labs, 2016. Used ... $8.99
Adrian Younge is a man of many modes – soundtrack funk, to hip hop, to a great project with The Delfonics – and here, he opens up yet another side of his genius – to give us a set of tracks that feel as if they could have been lifted from some great early 80s electronic film score! The music is heavy on keyboards and electronics, but gets the special sort of production that Younge brings to his projects – one that augments some of the richer, more soulful styles in the music – and keeps this record away from the coldness of other recent attempts to hit such a vibe! Some moments are darker, others are more song-based – with almost an Italian Cosmic club approach, right down to use of vocoder on the lyrics – and the album's year another feather in Mr Younge's ever-growing cap. Titles include "Voltage Controlled Orgasms", "Fly Away", "The Night", "Systems", "Patterns", "Linguistics", and "Suicidal Love". CD

VariousCoxone's Music 2 – The Sound Of Young Jamaica - More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959 to 1963 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.99
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. ✨✧ Grant Stewart with Eric AlexanderEstate ... CD
Video Arts (Japan), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soulful little album from saxophonist Grant Stewart – one that's made even better by the appearance of Eric Alexander on two of the tracks in the set! The core group here features guitar, piano, bass, and drums – with Stewart in the lead, blowing tenor in a deep-toned way that clearly draws on the legacy of Hank Mobley, but which also moves around with a leaner, more fluid sensibility at times. The ballads and mellower numbers are often the best – especially the album's great title reading of "Estate" – but the uptempo tracks move along in a nice hardbop mode too, and titles include "Carving The Rock", "Soul Station", "Jacqueline", and "Cool Struttin". Alexander guests on the titles "3 For Carson" and "Systems" – making for a nice twin-tenor frontline! CD

Irma (Italy), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great look at an oft-neglected chapter of underground club – the excellent electronic work coming out of Italy in the early 80s! The Italian approach to the music was certainly influenced by the sounds of New York, German, and England at the time – but it also had its own flavor – a kind of unabashed love of the dancefloor, and a subtle hope that disco would someday come again! The grooves on the set are all spare and electronic, but also quite infectious – with a really strong focus on the hook, and a stripped-down sound that somehow makes them even more compelling. Titles include "Robot Is Systematic" by Letric Workers, "Dance Boy Dance" by Alexander Robotnick, "Stranger In A Strange Land (club)" by NOIA, "Collision (rmx)" by Sphinx, "Pinguins Invasion (hot version)" by Scotch, "Plastic Doll (rmx inst)" by Dharma, "Walking In The Neon (club)" by Peter Richard, "Wonderful (inst)" by Klein & MBO, "I Need Love (inst)" by Capricorn, and "Spacer Woman (voc)" by Charlie. Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. ✨✧ Dazz BandJoystick/Jukebox ... CD
Motown/FTG, 1983/1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD
