✨✧ Bob Seger SystemRamblin' Gamblin' Man ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine". LP, Vinyl record album

Extra GoldenOk-Oyot System ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2006. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A partnership between US indie guitarists Ian Egelson and Alex Minoff of Golden – with Onyango Wuod Omari and the late Otieno Jagwasi of Nairobi based benga band Orchestra Extra Solar Africa – for an lightly funky, deeply melodic blend of hypnotic tunes! It's a true partnership – jumping back and forth between what each side brings of their own sounds – with the distinctions blending surprisingly well! Titles include "Ilando Gima Onge", "It's Not Easy", "OK-Oyot System", "Osama Rach", "Tussin And Fightin'" and "Nyajondere. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Very Good ... $5.99
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". VariousNoise Reduction System – Formative European Electronica 1974 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $27.99
An incredible collection of electronic sounds that went on to inform generations of rock, pop, and dance music in years to come – but all featured here with much more interesting examples from the European roots of the genre! There's a wonderful criss-crossing of sources going on here – some academic experimenters from electronic labs, some prog musicians getting a bit more analog, some early digital keyboard wizards, and some downright punky folks – using electronics instead of guitars! The blend is wonderful, and very ear-opening – even more amazing than the partner set in this series, Close To The Noise Floor, which focused on the UK. The music here includes early work by artists you might not expect in such company, alongside others who flourished briefly at the time, gave us some great sounds – then quickly disappeared. Fortunately, the big book of notes tells all the details of the groups and their music – making the whole thing as historically informative as it is entertaining. Titles include "Ich Will" by DAF, "Ny Ny" by Truus De Groot, "Caramel" by Cluster, "Godot Was Here" by Human Flesh, "Soviet Invasion" by Doxa Sinistra, "Last Lift" by Not Only Bones, "Geld" by Malaria, "Son" by Minny Pops, "What's Dat" by Der Plan, "Industrial Tape Track 3 (excerpt)" by Maurizio Bianchi, "Sexual Discipline" by Die Form, "Flanco Dama" by Diseno Corbusier, "Troglodyten" by Asmus Tietchens, "Hymne Au Ver" by Bene Gesserit, "Secret Affair No 2" by Borghesia, "Glue Head" by Yello, "Party Talk" by Andre De Koning, "Shai Hulud" by Bernard Szajner, and "TAnze & Singen" by DDAA. 61 tracks in all! ✨✧ Jiri Stivin & Rudolf DasekSystem Tandem (Japo) ... LP
Supraphon/Japo (Germany), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cool duets between Czech reedman Jiri Stivin and guitarist Rudolf Dasek – a set with a lot fuller feel than you might expect! The work is straight, and never too outside – and although there's no drums or bass in the performance, there's an inherently rhythmic sensibility to most numbers – that modal sort of style that Stivin always brings to his reeds, especially on 70s recordings like this! Jiri plays alto, soprano, flute, and a bit of recorder – and there's a dynamic energy to the record that's really wonderful. Titles include "What's Your Story", "Puzzle Game", "Puddle On The Muddle", "Hey Man", and "Shepherd Song". LP, Vinyl record album

A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

AmadanaSibreco Turntable (internal speakers in wood cabinet – complete with USB & RCA outputs, and stylus) ... Turntable
Amadana (Japan), 2015. New Item ... $259.99
A totally wonderful little turntable – solid, stylish, and totally self-contained – with a strong sound that's a lot better than most other plug-and-play models on the market! The first thing that stands out with this one is the base – which is very solid, and has a wood veneer – which seems to give the whole thing a much warmer sound than the mostly-plastic models on the market, especially when you turn the volume way up! The speakers are hidden in the legs – isolated from the platter in a nice way that causes a lot less interference when the volume is up – and the platter features a belt drive, which further reduces distortion – and makes for very solid playback. The turntable spins at 33, 45, and 78rpm – and it comes with a ceramic stereo cartridge and stylus, for easy play right out of the box. And although you can play the unit on its own, it also has RCA outputs that allow you to plug into a full stereo system – as well as a USB output, with MP3 software too. The whole thing's capped off by a great dust cover that keeps the record free of dust while playing – and we'd honestly be hard-pressed to find a better self-contained turntable on the market today! Roberta FlackOasis ... LP
Atlantic, 1988. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". Stefano Ghittoni (Dining Rooms) & DJ RoccaAtemporal Space Tests ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... $10.99
The title of the record may sound a bit scientific, but the music within has a very human appeal – sweet funky rhythms forged by the team of DJ Rocca and Stefano Ghittoni – the latter of whom you might know from previous productions with The Dining Rooms! The sound here is maybe an even more stripped-down take on that group's approach – very classic in the core elements used, but very contemporary in presentation overall – almost with a lean, very rhythmic approach that takes us back to the earliest years of Italo House – especially in the warmth of the tunes – but with a vibe that's also much more 21st Century overall! Titles include "Jupiter", "Cosmic Double Bass", "Past Present & Future", "Soul Place", "Memories", and "Carrie System". CD

Cameron GravesPlanetary Prince ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Graves produced – which gives the record a very different feel than other Mack Avenue releases – and titles include "Isle Of Love", "The Lucifer Rebellion", "El Diablo", "Adam & Eve", "Planetary Prince", "The End Of Corporatism", and "Satania Our Solar System". An obscure album from Garland Green – recorded years after his hit sides for Uni, and with a very different feel too! The album's got arrangements by Lamont Dozier, and the overall feel is very similar to Dozier's own work from the early 80s – modern soul in a mellow mode, with arrangements that are smooth and a bit slick, but also offset strongly by Green's all-soul vocals. There's a bit of a southern/modern feel to the set, and titles include "Always", "Nobody Ever Came Close", "System", "Love's Calling", "These Arms", and "Tryin To Hold On". LP, Vinyl record album

Kasai All StarsAround Felicite (with bonus tracks and download) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
Wonderful work from the Kasai All-Stars – a group we first discovered in the Congotronics series with Konono No 1 – and who still have the same wonderful blend of raw rhythms, fuzzy distortion, and very powerful vocals! Their music has this powerfully organic vibe – with acoustic and electric elements bumping together in a fantastic way – that special sort of immediate power that really grabs you, and never asks for deeper cultural understanding as the price of admission. And the record's also got some interesting surprises too, in that a few numbers are performed by the larger Orchestra Symphonique Kimbanguiste, used in the soundtrack of which the main Kasai music is a part – versions of a few compositions by Arvo Part, which creates a heavenly juxtaposition next to the earthier numbers – with a vibe that's quite unusual, and makes the Kasai music seem even more powerful. Titles include "Kapinga Yamba", "In Praise Of Homeboys", "Tshalemba", "Mabela", "Quick As White", and "Tshitua Fuila Mbuloba". 2LP package also features some bonus remixes – including "Drowning Goat (Daedalus rmx)", "Felicite Three (Ramzi rmx)", "In Praise Of Homeboys (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Quick As White (Clap Clap rmx)", and "Salute To Kalombo (Ekiti Sound System rmx)". The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. Used ... $6.99
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. CD

✨✧ MazeMaze ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good ... $6.99
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". LP, Vinyl record album

Green's quite new in his career here, and Peterson takes most of the time in the solo spotlight – quite remarkable, given that he'd suffered a minor stroke a few days before the performance, but still really blows us away. Cecil TaylorUnit Structures ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good ... $34.99
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. Oriki (France), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic collection of funk from the 70s scene in Ivory Coast – music that's every bit as heavy on jazz-based solos as it is on the grooves – with some especially strong sax lines that really give the tunes a lot of soul! The music here is nice and raw, and often very stripped-down in terms of presentation and production – never too polished or commercial, nor purposely tripped-out – and instead the vein of Afro Funk that's fantastically put-together right from the start, and which has plenty of appeal to fans of American funk from the same time! Lots of these artists clearly borrow the same James Brown influence that Nigerian funk work had in the early 70s – but they also work with very interesting and unique sounds throughout – especially on the reeds and keyboards, which cascade with lots of fresh phrasings and frenetic energy. There are vocals on some cuts, but the instrumentation is always what keeps things strong – and titles include "Tumba Safari" by Afro Train, "Chicken" by De Frank Jr, "Tink Tank" by Afro Soul System, "Issa" by Les Nidrou, "Secret Populaire" by Sewa Jacintho, "Ayee Menko" by De Frank Jr, "Femme D'Ajourd'hui (part 2)" by Moussa Doumbia, "Assalam Aleikoum" by Francis Kingsley, "Dankasa" by De Frank Jr, and "Mariage" by Moussa Doumbia. Shipp reveals himself as a very fresh voice on his instrument – a musician who grew up in a generation already aware of the freedoms of Cecil Taylor and the European scene – but one who also has a sense of tone and structure that really set him apart – a mode that's as distinct for Shipp as the talents of Muhal Richard Abrams were to that musician, but with a much more personal approach – big ideas coming through smaller moments, which is what keeps the album's selection of 14 shorter tunes completely captivating all the way through. Titles include "Harmonic Oscillator", "Temperate Zone", "The Highway", "Algebraic Boogie", "Nerve Signals", "Dance Of The Blue Atoms", and "Bop Abyss". CD

✨✧ UltravoxSystems Of Romance ... LP
Island, 1978. Very Good ... $4.99
A pivotal album in the career of Ultravox – one that has the group shifting from their rougher roots, into the sweeter, more synth-styled sounds that became their lasting legacy on modern music! Gone is the quirkiness of the first few records, but in its place is one of the best (and first) efforts to refine earlier experiments with electronics into a tighter, more pop-styled mode – one that's aided strongly here by the production efforts of Conny Plank, whose work in the electric prog years of the German scene really help give this record a real sense of depth! Titles include "Slow Motion", "I Can't Stay Long", "Someone Else's Clothes", "Blue Light", "Quiet Men", "Dislocation", "Maximum Acceleration", and "Just For A Moment". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Stuart Baker & Steve BarrowReggae Soundsystem – Original Reggae Album Cover Art (hardcover) ... Book
Soul Jazz (UK), 2012. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
Amazing images galore – some classic covers from the Jamaican scene of the 60s and 70s, and lots more obscure images too – all presented in very vivid color, with a lot more clarity than any of the beat up original copies we have in our collection! The book really does full justice to the visual side of the reggae scene – and brings together a huge amount of covers we've never seen before, with others that look way more vibrant here than on a tiny CD reissue – presented in this record-shaped book that reminds us why albums always look so great in the racks! Most images are overflowing with color – really beautiful reproductions – and the oversized book is hardcover, and almost 240 pages overall. Book

✨✧ Dazz BandJoystick ... LP
Motown, 1983. Very Good+ ... $2.99
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Perry & OthersMr Perry I Presume ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A wealth of unreleased tracks and unreleased mixes from the studios of the mighty Lee Scratch Perry – material that was mostly recorded during a very fruitful time in the mid 70s, when Lee was turning out a fair bit of tracks that were only issued on one-off dub plates, to be spun by only the hippest sound systems in Kingston and London! Material of this nature is often nicely offbeat – no easy hooks or more commercial elements, and instead the kind of creative approach to overall sound that makes every aspect of a tune worth opening up into play – from the vocals to the rhythms, to the production. Titles include "Ethiopia Land" by Peter & Paul, "Lay Beside You" by Joy White, "Jah I" by Lee Perry & The Upsetters, "Word (acapella)" by The Gatherers, "War & Peace" by The Upsetters, "Keep On Moving" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Keep On Trying" by Susan & Bunny", and "Living My Life" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters. Travis D StimelingCountry Music Reader ... Book
Oxford, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99 39.95
A great survey of important writings on country music from the earliest years to the present – one that doesn't just focus on the work of historians and music journalists, but also includes material from popular magazines, fan newsletters, trade publications, and even the artists themselves! The whole thing's a really fresh take on the format – very different than some of the too-iconic efforts that try to systemize country too much, with a great run between high and low, popular and obscure. The book features 51 chapters, each on very different topics – penned by folks as diverse as Charlie Louvin, Johnny Cash, Ralph Peer, Cecil B Sharp, John Lomax, Tom T Hall, George Will, and countless others. 382 pages, softcover. YazzWanted (3CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Pop (UK), 1988. Used ... $9.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". Amazing 3CD package features a massive 32 bonus tracks – including all the material from the Wanted Remixes album, plus loads of other remixes from 12" singles of the period! CD

VariousStudio One Dub ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
Another round of Studio One butter from the folks at Soul Jazz! By this point you're well informed about the status of Coxsone Dodd's Studio One operation as the cornerstone of so much Jamaican music, and Soul Jazz has approached the catalog from just about every angle, covering nearly all the bases before landing here on this dub set. The sly Island grooves are stripped down to their bare essentials, then given a tasteful bit of dubby gloss at the hands of Sylvan Morris, for a massive collection that'll rule your stereo like Studio One rocked the sound systems back in the day. 17 tracks in all, wrapped in a nice package that includes interviews with Morris and Dodd, and fully annotated as to which numbers the rhythms were originally cut as the backing for. Includes "Bionic Dub", "Sky Rhythm", 'Taurus Dub 2", "Hooligan", "Dub Rock", "Hi Fashion Dub", In Cold Blood Version" and "Feel The Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DJ ShadowMountain Has Fallen EP (with download) ... LP
Mass Appeal, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great EP from the always inspired, never predictable DJ Shadow! He gets assists from top notch MCs both legendary and contemporary in Nas and Danny Brown – plus modern legend film score composer Steven Price on a track – showing a pretty incredible stylistic reach on this tight, but creatively sprawling 4 track set. The closer "Corridors" with modern movie soundtrack heavy Steven Price is a real late model DJ Shadow standout, combining some of the moody aspects that have always been integral to Shadow productions with all the more depth via Price's orchestral flourishes. "Systematic" is straight up top shelf hip hop with Nas, "Horror Show" is that too, catered nicely to Danny Brown's distinctive voice, and "Good News" is a spacey, bouncy, jittery and uber-compelling instrumental.
