✨✧ Freedom Sounds featuring Wayne HendersonSoul Sound System ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! This set's a little more ambitious than the group's first album – with a number of tracks that groove in a very strong Latin jazz mode, sounding a lot like some of the best work on Atlantic at the time by Mongo Santamaria, Hubert Laws, and others. Henderson's trombone is still a key solo instrument, but the album also features some incredible sax work from Willie Gresham – a player we know little about, but who makes the album cook in the same fantastic way that Hubert Laws and Sonny Fortune did for Mongo's best work of the 60s! The grooves are very right-on, with plenty of excellent percussion work – and titles include the originals "Love-Out", "Behold The Day", and "Soul Sound System", plus some groovy covers, like "All You Need is Love", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "Are You Sure?" – all done with a great Latiny groove! ✨✧ Herbie HancockSound System ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Very Good+ ... $2.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". SystemX-Periment ... LP
Mirage, 1984. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
80s electro pop from The System – heard here on one of their classics for Atlantic! The sound is quite spare on most tracks – just keyboards, drum programs, and bits of guitar – all sewn together in catchy, electric rhythms – and topped off by vocals from singer Mic Murphy. The sound's a bit dated at times, but the tunes are all pretty darn catchy – and there's an unabashedly poppy feel to the set that makes us wonder why folks aren't making music this straightforward anymore. Titles include "Dangerous", "Escape", "Bad Girl", "I Can't Take Losing You", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Locutor, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An EP, but one that bursts out with almost as much energy as a full length album – thanks to a trio of tight Latin grooves from Bio Ritmo! The set's a nice bridge between their debut album and their second record – and it's got every bit as much depth as both of those – with the group's core mix of trumpet/trumpet and percussion, on titles that include "Argulla", "Tu No Sabes", and "Madrugador". ✨✧ Lou Champagne SystemNo Visible Means (180 gram white vinyl pressing – limited, numbered) ... LP
Pterodactyl/Medical, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Coolin SystemCoolin System ... CD
GED Soul, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about this record is all the measured out space that the group provides from some really sweet solos all around. It adds a late 60s-styled jazz funk vibe that's not easy to pull off, but everyone in this group can play, and they make it seem easy. Players include Mikie Martel on trumpet & flugelhorn, JD Douglas on tenor sax and flute, Pablo Ahogado on Hammond and Rhodes, David Guy on bass, James Bonomo on drums and Andy Wilmoth on percussion. AJ Eason provides guest vocals on "I Need Some Money", but for the most part it's a cool instrumentals set, and titles include "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Red Onion", "Sunshine Alley", "Roots", "Sweet Honey Bee", "Nubian Lady", "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and more. ✨✧ Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
An Afro Funk combo, but with a difference! The group's got a strong female vocal presence upfront, and also really knows how to build a tune – mixing together classic rhythms with some inventive keyboard and horn solos – surging strongly forward on "Bella Ciao", a 21st Century version of the kind of longform jam you'd hear on a vintage Fela album! "DON" is moodier and dubbier – almost a post-punk kind of take on Afro Funk – with dark elements in the background at many points, as if Martin Hannett was production! LP, Vinyl record album

Won Sin (South Korea), 1974. Used ... $12.99
One of the darkest concept albums we've ever heard – a set dedicated to creation and the "planet of man" – but really just an amazing experiment in sound! Manfred Schunke put the record together to explore his "artificial head" recording system – and it's got this incredible stereo interplay throughout – sometimes weird sounds leaping back and forth from speaker to speaker, sometimes these loud industrial noises looming from each – and creating this richly organic feeling of sound and soil! There's vocals on the set – some sung, some spoken – but most of the music is heavy on echo, noise, textures, and tones – at a sonic level that's more striking than most experiments to follow! CD

Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes Complete – Bootleg Series Volume 11 (6CD set – with book) ... CD
Columbia, 1967. New Copy 6CD & Book ... $126.99 149.98
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – finally available after all these years in a definitive, officially-sanctioned box set for the first time ever! The original 1975 LP version was (and still is) an incredible sampler of the original recordings – also an appendix, with some later material added to it – and it really only hinted at the ragged glory of the 1967 sessions. Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of the originals, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Here for the first time ever is a legitimate release of a great wealth of the raw, original Woodstock recordings, painstakingly restored from the original master tapes – but without the overdubs, editing and tinkerings of the mid 70s LP version, and other tracks that never been officially released in any form! The Complete box set edition is truly incredible – with the material laid out as close to chronological order as possible, as based on Garth Hudson's session recording numbering system – and it really is as close a true, complete Basement Tapes as the world is ever likely to see. 138 tracks on 6CDs – including "Edge Of The Ocean", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "Johnny Todd", "The Hills Of Mexico", "Too Much Of Nothing (Take 2)", "Tears of Rage (Take 1)", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ain't No More Cane (Take 2)", "900 Miles From Home", "One Kind Of Favor", "All You Have To Do Is Dream (Take 1)", "2 Dollars And 99 Cents", "Down By The Station", "Cok All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies", "The Spanish Song (Take 1)" and many, many more. Also includes a 120-page deluxe-bound book with rare and unseen photos and extensive notes. CD

Roberta FlackOasis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1988. Used ... $14.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". KC & The Sunshine BandWho Do Ya Love ... LP
TK, 1978. Sealed ... $3.99
Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island". LP, Vinyl record album

A huge moment for LL Cool J – and a set that has him balanced nicely between the sharp rhymes of his roots and the rising stardom of his role in the larger world of R&B as well! Marley Marl produced, and the whole thing's still got a nice edge – even though some of these tunes entered the mainstream and got LL quite a bit of play in areas he'd never reached before. VPI 16.5Amazing Record Cleaning Machine! (115 Volt Version) ... Misc
VPI, 2004. New Copy ... $649.99 699.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using this amazing machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested VPI system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Misc
(Please Note: unlike other items we carry, this one is not actually in stock. We need to special order it for you, but we usually get them in a month.)

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 80s/1990s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $10.99
That's not a baby floating in the water on the cover, and the set's not a batch of familiar Nirvana or Sub Pop sounds – but instead a very well-done collection that gets at the much deeper scene in the Pacific Northwest during the late 80s and early 90s! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of fuzzy guitars and balls-out action on most of these tracks – but the overall execution is less standard, more unusual, and has a gritty, garagey intensity that so many of the bigger Seattle acts lost right away. And even though we lived through that time (and yes, bought our share of the records, too), there's still plenty here we'd never heard before – which is really saying a lot to the archive-digging crew at Soul Jazz! Obscure, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A modern minimalist watershed and though a bit academic, still pretty darn beautiful! This early instrumental release was the first time that Eno really explored his farther-reaching ideas on record. The set features 2 pieces: "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer; and "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel", which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". LP, Vinyl record album
(UA pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Dazz BandJoystick/Jukebox ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $13.99
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD

Don MuroIt's Time (150 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Sine Wave, 1977. Very Good ... $24.99
A late 70s freewheeling synth extravanza from Don Muro – one the covers a lot stylistic territory on its 2 sides – from fusiony instrumentals, to cosmic keyboard dance music, to anthemic spacey rock – and it does all incredibly well! Muro plays an array of synthesizer systems and keyboards here – and everything else, too – including the singing, on the few vocal tunes. Don's on ARP systems, Rhodes, Hammond and other electric keys, acoustic piano, guitars, bass, drums and percussion – and he's a solid songwriter, to boot. Mighty impressive stuff! Titles include "It's Time", "Current Events", "Sweet Little Thing", "Leap Frog", "Squash", "Island In The Sky", "Lay Low Day", "Music Box", "Russian Dream" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Donna SummerAll Systems Go (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Geffen/Driven By The Music (UK), 1987. New Copy ... $20.99
80s keyboard maestro Harold Faltermeyer gives Donna Summer plenty of help here – with the kind of catchy, hook-heavy lines that made his famous soundtrack work such a hit at the time! Harold had played on previous Summer albums, but really takes the lead here with a snapping, syncopated approach to rhythms – one that bubbles along nicely on titles that include "All Systems Go", "Dinner With Gershwin", "Only The Fool Survives", "Bad Reputation", "Love Shock", and "Jeremy". Very nice reissue – with a heavy book-style cover, lots of liner notes, and bonus tracks that include "Tearin Down The Walls", "All Systems Go (ext rmx)", "Dinner With Gershwin (ext version)", "Only The Fool Survives (edit)", and "Dinner With Gershwin (inst)". Hot Casa (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Wicked work from Stanislas Tohon – a sweet batch of skittish grooves that occasionally include some William Onyebor-like electronics! The tracks are all upbeat and uptempo – fast-riffing rhythms that spin out wonderfully right from the start – with some vocals on most numbers, but also plenty of room for instrumental solos – including sax lines, keyboard parts, and some especially cool moogy bits! Rhythms are less Afro Funk than older modes, but kicked up a few notches – with boundless energy that never lets up throughout the set. Titles include "Yallow 2", "Dja Dja Dja", "O Kou", "Africa", and "Paix Lo". LP, Vinyl record album

Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. Heavy Latin grooves – served up with plenty of funk, jazz, and soul in the mix – and put together as a collection that's even better than the first volume in this series! ✨✧ Blue Gene TyrannyOut Of The Blue ... LP
Lovely, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A compelling first album from avant composer Blue Gene Tyranny – one of the first efforts from the excellent art label Lovely Music, and a wonderful example of the left-field experimentation going on away from the punk and more familiar scenes of the time! The first half of the record is an attempt to open up more conventional pop – but from our later perspective, the results sound a bit more like more creative work of the mainstream – although definitely with a more offbeat feel, particularly on the one instrumental jamming number. But the real standout here is the side-long track "A Letter From Home" – done for a narrator and "sampling chorus" – a really cool piece that sets the scene for Laurie Anderson, Giorno Poetry Systems, and all the other great art records that we remember so fondly from the 80s! This piece alone is worth the price of the record – but you also get the shorter cuts "For David K", "Leading A Double Life", and "Next Time Might Be Your Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), 2012. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

Most images are overflowing with color – really beautiful reproductions – and the oversized book is hardcover, and almost 240 pages overall. Book

The music here isn't the trendy, intellectual style coming from Brazil in recent years – but instead the sort that plays big at house parties, underground clubs, and even street festivals where the booming beats are a perfect match for a well-crafted soundsystem! In fact, the sound here is so heavy, you might want to turn down the bass a bit on your stereo before playback – lest you blast the dishes off your shelves in the kitchen.
