Bio RitmoSalsa System EP ... CD CD format
Locutor, 2006. Used ... $3.99
An EP, but one that bursts out with almost as much energy as a full length album – thanks to a trio of tight Latin grooves from Bio Ritmo! The set's a nice bridge between their debut album and their second record – and it's got every bit as much depth as both of those – with the group's core mix of trumpet/trumpet and percussion, on titles that include "Argulla", "Tu No Sabes", and "Madrugador". Coolin SystemCoolin System ... CD CD format
GED Soul, 2011. Used ... $4.99
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about this record is all the measured out space that the group provides from some really sweet solos all around. It adds a late 60s-styled jazz funk vibe that's not easy to pull off, but everyone in this group can play, and they make it seem easy. Players include Mikie Martel on trumpet & flugelhorn, JD Douglas on tenor sax and flute, Pablo Ahogado on Hammond and Rhodes, David Guy on bass, James Bonomo on drums and Andy Wilmoth on percussion. AJ Eason provides guest vocals on "I Need Some Money", but for the most part it's a cool instrumentals set, and titles include "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Red Onion", "Sunshine Alley", "Roots", "Sweet Honey Bee", "Nubian Lady", "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and more. Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". SystemX-Periment ... LP LP format
Mirage, 1984. Very Good ... $1.99
80s electro pop from The System – heard here on one of their classics for Atlantic! The sound is quite spare on most tracks – just keyboards, drum programs, and bits of guitar – all sewn together in catchy, electric rhythms – and topped off by vocals from singer Mic Murphy. The sound's a bit dated at times, but the tunes are all pretty darn catchy – and there's an unabashedly poppy feel to the set that makes us wonder why folks aren't making music this straightforward anymore. Titles include "Dangerous", "Escape", "Bad Girl", "I Can't Take Losing You", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

New Lou Champagne SystemNo Visible Means (180 gram white vinyl pressing – limited, numbered) ... LP LP format
Pterodactyl/Medical, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

New Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP LP format
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

New Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP LP format
Spring, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". New Bob Seger SystemRamblin' Gamblin' Man ... LP LP format
Capitol, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing. Side 2 has a mark that clicks on tracks one and two. Cover has some moderate wear, a bit of wrinkling along the bottom, and some stains on the back.)

Mirage/Atlantic, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wow! This record takes all the directions that soul was heading towards in the early 80s, and wraps them into one record! System has it all – geri curls, bass pedal riffing, tinny synth drums, over-produced flanged-out vocals, and tinny but catchy little tunes that were designed to cross over with the "hot mix" crowd in a big way. Tracks include "It Takes 2", "Big City Beat", "I Don't Run From Danger", "My Radio Rocks", and "Did In By A Friend". LP, Vinyl record album

New SystemSweat ... LP LP format
Mirage/Atlantic, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
The big breakout record for The System – one of the key soul crossover duos of the 80s! By the time of the record, electric instrumentation and studio technology had evolved to a point where a team like Mic Murphy and David Frank could put together a whole mainstream funk record like this on their own – and audiences too were a bit more open to accepting a world of overdubs and multi-track recording, and didn't need the 10-piece lineup of some of those late 70s groups to help them find their groove! The standout number here is the huge single "You Are In My System" – a cut that's wonderful in its simplicity, and somehow even better all these many years later, which it seems like less of a commercial crossover track than it did before. Other tracks follow a similar groove, and titles include "Sweat", "It's Passion", "Now I Am Electric", "Stand Up & Cheer", and "I Won't Let Go". LP, Vinyl record album

New Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP LP format
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". Delta Acoustic/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99
One of the darkest concept albums we've ever heard – a set dedicated to creation and the "planet of man" – but really just an amazing experiment in sound! Manfred Schunke put the record together to explore his "artificial head" recording system – and it's got this incredible stereo interplay throughout – sometimes weird sounds leaping back and forth from speaker to speaker, sometimes these loud industrial noises looming from each – and creating this richly organic feeling of sound and soil! There's vocals on the set – some sung, some spoken – but most of the music is heavy on echo, noise, textures, and tones – at a sonic level that's more striking than most experiments to follow! LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes Complete – Bootleg Series Volume 11 (6CD set – with book) ... CD CD format
Columbia, 1967. New Copy 6CD & Book ... $126.99 149.98
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – finally available after all these years in a definitive, officially-sanctioned box set for the first time ever! The original 1975 LP version was (and still is) an incredible sampler of the original recordings – also an appendix, with some later material added to it – and it really only hinted at the ragged glory of the 1967 sessions. Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of the originals, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Here for the first time ever is a legitimate release of a great wealth of the raw, original Woodstock recordings, painstakingly restored from the original master tapes – but without the overdubs, editing and tinkerings of the mid 70s LP version, and other tracks that never been officially released in any form! The Complete box set edition is truly incredible – with the material laid out as close to chronological order as possible, as based on Garth Hudson's session recording numbering system – and it really is as close a true, complete Basement Tapes as the world is ever likely to see. 138 tracks on 6CDs – including "Edge Of The Ocean", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "Johnny Todd", "The Hills Of Mexico", "Too Much Of Nothing (Take 2)", "Tears of Rage (Take 1)", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ain't No More Cane (Take 2)", "900 Miles From Home", "One Kind Of Favor", "All You Have To Do Is Dream (Take 1)", "2 Dollars And 99 Cents", "Down By The Station", "Cok All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies", "The Spanish Song (Take 1)" and many, many more. Also includes a 120-page deluxe-bound book with rare and unseen photos and extensive notes. CD

Columbia, 1987. Very Good ... $0.99
Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". Roberta FlackOasis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD CD format
Atlantic (Japan), 1988. Used ... $19.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP LP format
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
Led Zeppelin walk back just a bit on their more stylistically sprawling tendencies for this one – and it's a fine set of hard-grooving rock from these uber-legends! We're not sure if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or if they just simply wanted to get out there and kick ass this time, but that's indeed what they do. It's still got some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Cecil TaylorUnit Structures (75th anniversary edition) ... LP LP format
Blue Note, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.98
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". That's not a baby floating in the water on the cover, and the set's not a batch of familiar Nirvana or Sub Pop sounds – but instead a very well-done collection that gets at the much deeper scene in the Pacific Northwest during the late 80s and early 90s! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of fuzzy guitars and balls-out action on most of these tracks – but the overall execution is less standard, more unusual, and has a gritty, garagey intensity that so many of the bigger Seattle acts lost right away. And even though we lived through that time (and yes, bought our share of the records, too), there's still plenty here we'd never heard before – which is really saying a lot to the archive-digging crew at Soul Jazz! And even though we lived through that time (and yes, bought our share of the records, too), there's still plenty here we'd never heard before – which is really saying a lot to the archive-digging crew at Soul Jazz! Titles "The System" by Attica, "Run Around" by Starfish, "Wench" by Bundle Of Hiss, "Fields" by Chemistry Set, "Bleed" by Thrillhammer, "AM FM" by Shug, "It's Getting Late" by Small Stars, "It Smiles" by Soylent Green, and "Debbie Had A Dream" by Treehouse. Stuart Baker & Steve BarrowReggae 45 Soundsystem – The Label Art Of Reggae Singles (paperback) ... Book Book
Soul Jazz (UK), 2012. New Copy Book ... $19.99 49.99
The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

New Don MuroIt's Time (150 gram pressing with download) ... LP LP format
Sine Wave, 1977. Very Good ... $24.99
A late 70s freewheeling synth extravanza from Don Muro – one the covers a lot stylistic territory on its 2 sides – from fusiony instrumentals, to cosmic keyboard dance music, to anthemic spacey rock – and it does all incredibly well! Muro plays an array of synthesizer systems and keyboards here – and everything else, too – including the singing, on the few vocal tunes. Don's on ARP systems, Rhodes, Hammond and other electric keys, acoustic piano, guitars, bass, drums and percussion – and he's a solid songwriter, to boot. Mighty impressive stuff! Titles include "It's Time", "Current Events", "Sweet Little Thing", "Leap Frog", "Squash", "Island In The Sky", "Lay Low Day", "Music Box", "Russian Dream" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Donna SummerAll Systems Go (with bonus tracks) ... CD CD format
Geffen/Driven By The Music (UK), 1987. New Copy ... $20.99
80s keyboard maestro Harold Faltermeyer gives Donna Summer plenty of help here – with the kind of catchy, hook-heavy lines that made his famous soundtrack work such a hit at the time! Harold had played on previous Summer albums, but really takes the lead here with a snapping, syncopated approach to rhythms – one that bubbles along nicely on titles that include "All Systems Go", "Dinner With Gershwin", "Only The Fool Survives", "Bad Reputation", "Love Shock", and "Jeremy". Very nice reissue – with a heavy book-style cover, lots of liner notes, and bonus tracks that include "Tearin Down The Walls", "All Systems Go (ext rmx)", "Dinner With Gershwin (ext version)", "Only The Fool Survives (edit)", and "Dinner With Gershwin (inst)". VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem – Part B ... LP LP format
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles on this second part of the vinyl edition include "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. Dazz BandJoystick/Jukebox ... CD CD format
Motown (Japan), 1983/1984. New Copy ... Around March 4, 2015
The Dazz Band brilliantly modernizes their sound for the early-to-mid 80s – without sacrificing the funk one bit on a pair of later Motown albums – '83's Joystick and '84's Jukebox in a single set! As you might guess from the title, on Joystick, Dazz Band thumps and pulses things into a style that's electro and computer groove aware. That said, their background in midwestern funky 70s soul is hardwired into their systems and they bridge the eras masterfully! Titles include "To The Roof", "Joystick", "Until You", "Rock With Me", "Now That I Have You" and more. On Jukebox, the Dazz Band hit hard with that catchy, synth-heavy groove that marks their other solid Motown work! The album's got all the catchy pop elements you might guess from the time – not as classically funky as the group in their roots, with lots of emphasis on the keyboards and guitar – that crossover Motown soul mode of the mid 80s. Titles include "So Much Love", "Dream Girl", "She's The One", "Heartbeat", "Let It All Blow", "Undercover Lover", and "Main Attraction". CD

Amazing images galore – some classic covers from the Jamaican scene of the 60s and 70s, and lots more obscure images too – all presented in very vivid color, with a lot more clarity than any of the beat up original copies we have in our collection! The book really does full justice to the visual side of the reggae scene – and brings together a huge amount of covers we've never seen before, with others that look way more vibrant here than on a tiny CD reissue – presented in this record-shaped book that reminds us why albums always look so great in the racks! Most images are overflowing with color – really beautiful reproductions – and the oversized book is hardcover, and almost 240 pages overall. Book

Heavy Latin grooves – served up with plenty of funk, jazz, and soul in the mix – and put together as a collection that's even better than the first volume in this series!
