SylvesterSylvester & The Hot Band (Scratch My Flower) ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good+ ... $23.99
A brilliant debut from Sylvester – quite different than his later disco and club work – although still pretty upbeat and groovy overall! The album's a really unique sort of effort – one that's unabashedly gender-bending, but also wonderfully solid from a musical perspective – funky at points, rootsy at others – with an odd blend of 70s soul and older R&B elements, all filtered through the genre-bending sound of the Bay Area scene of the time! Arrangements are by Sylvester and The Hot Band, but Ben Sidran produced, and we're sure that the record's offbeat qualities are partly due to his own great style of the time – that weird, slightly messed-up groove you'd find on Ben's Blue Thumb album. The set features wild covers of "Southern Man" and "My Country Tis Of Thee" – plus "Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Gimme A Pigfoot", "God Bless The Child", "I'm A Steam Roller", "That Is Rock n Roll", and "Come Back Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – with scratch n smell sticker! Cover has light wear, and a cutout hole.)

✨✧ SylvesterLiving Proof ... LP
Fantasy, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little set from Sylvester – 3 sides recorded live in San Francisco, one more recorded in the studio! All the sides have a complicated approach to the groove – larger orchestrations that really show Syl pushing his conception of soul to the max, sounding really wonderful, and almost a bit jazzy on the best tracks – much more than the colder dancefloor act of later years, and with a depth of soul that should have made him rank right up there with some of the more righteous soul geniuses of the 70s. Tracks include "Body Strong", "Blackbird", "Happiness", "Lover Man", "You Are My Friend", "Can't Stop Dancing", "In My Fantasy", and "Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves". ✨✧ SylvesterSell My Soul ... LP
Honey/Fantasy, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Sylvester's years on Fantasy Records – a set that has him working strongly with soul maestro Harvey Fuqua, in a really great blend of disco and more laidback modes! There's a balance here that's like early Luther at his best – a way of being proudly poised, yet never in an overdone way – a captivating approach to the music that pushes past any obvious cliches you might expect, and which will definitely have you digging deeper for more Sylvester if you only know his hits. The set list includes a few older classics remade – including "Fever" and "Cry Me A River" – plus the tracks "Change Up", "I Need You", "My Life Is Loving You", and "Doin It For The Real Thing". ✨✧ SylvesterStars ... LP
Fantasy, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sylvester's definitely heading for the sound he would embrace more in the 80s – working here with more electronic-driven rhythms, in a stretched-out clubby mode that's more in keeping with the style of Giorgio Moroder than his earlier work for Fantasy. Given his great vocals, though, Syl really makes things sound wonderful – especially on his surprisingly great remake of "I Who Have Nothing", which is done here as an uptempo disco groover. Other tracks include "Body Strong", "Stars", and "I Need Somebody To Love Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Silver ConventionSave Me ... LP
Midland, 1975. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A huge breakout moment for disco in the 70s – the first album from Silver Convention, a very early example of the European power on the club scene! The group's the brainchild of arranger Sylvester Levay and producer Michael Kunze – who come up with some great German disco rhythms for the record, mixed with soaring female trio vocals, by a group that includes two German gals and American soul singer Roberta Kelly! The vocal approach is similar to that 70s Philly group mode – popularized by First Choice, Three Degrees, and others – and pumped it up with the Munich sound of throbbing bass and heavy beats, which was arguably one of the first steps towards house music in the 80s. Titles include the huge hit "Fly Robin Fly", plus "Save Me", "I Like It", "Chains Of Love", "Tiger Baby", "Always Another Girl", and "Heart Of Stone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a half split top seam, cutout hole.)

✨✧ Herbie MannBird In A Silver Cage ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet funky 70s work from Herbie Mann – one of his best records of the time, and a set that's got a stretched-out and slightly cosmic feel! The album's clearly the brainchild of writer/arranger/producer Sylvester Levay – who also plays keyboards on the session, and creates a groove that's not that dissimilar from some of the Dave Matthews work on Kudu or CTI – despite the fact that Levay was best known for his work with Silver Convention! The overall sound is slick, but still has plenty of room for solo work – and there's some uptempo numbers that groove out, but without as much of the cheesy disco touches as some of Mann's other records. Titles include "Aria", "Bird In A Silver Cage", "The Piper", and "Birdwalk". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light ring wear. Labels have marker.)

✨✧ High InergyTurnin On ... LP
Gordy, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album ever from this late 70s Motown group – a set that's got the girls really stepping out with a nice degree of power – in a groove that's different than the usual female disco mode of the time! The record's got a much more fully-formed sort of feel – not just a female chorus with grooves, but a real soul group who really know how to put things together – especially given the album's really nice balance between groovers, midtempo moments, and ballads – all of which give the whole thing a very well-rounded feel. Arrangements are by Greg Poree, Sylvester Rivers, Greg Washburn, and Jimmy Holiday – and titles include "You Can't Turn Me Off", "Searchin", "Ain't No Love Left", "Let Me Get Close To You", "Love Is All You Need", and "Save It For A Rainy Day". ✨✧ Patrick CowleySchool Daze ... LP
Dark Entries, 1981. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from Patrick Cowley – an artist who most folks know for music with Sylvester in the 80s, but heard here on a selection of tracks he did for porno films at the same time! The music has lots of the sweet electro touches of Cowley's singles for the clubs – post-disco funk, and instrumentation that's almost all electric, but handled with a warmly soulful vibe – beats layered over basslines over beats – served up here in a mix of uptempo modes and mellower moments, which must have been crafted to fit the different sexy scenes in the films! The music here comes from to films – School Daze and Muscle Up – and titles include "Seven Sacred Pools", "Muscle Up", "Zygote", "Mocking Bird Dream", "Tides Of Man", and "Primordial Landscape".
