Despite the fact that he's one of the most influential jazz singers of all time (and certainly one with the biggest hit, as the original recording of "I'm In the Mood For Love" probably sold more copies than most other vocalese recordings combined), King Pleasure only ever cut three full albums – and this third one is the hardest to find! The album was recorded for United Artists during the time when Alan Douglas was cutting sides for the label, and it's very much in the same mode as his earlier recordings for Prestige and HiFi, apart from some occasional spare string backing that's added to the small group jazz playing. Pleasure's vocals are wonderful – incomparable, and right at the peak of vocalese sublimity – and the album's filled with great numbers like "That Old Black Magic (Diaper Pin)", "This Is Always", "Jazz Jump", "Don't Get Scared", "Swan Blues", and "Mean To Me", all completely transformed by Pleasure! A very strange soundtrack from Andre Previn! The film is an obscure Natalie Wood vehicle – about an actress in Hollywood of the 30s – and it appears that Wood is the vocalist on the album's few numbers with lyrics, written by Andre with the help of Dory Previn, making the set one of their earliest collaborations! The vocal numbers are more 60s period sounding than 30s – and the instrumental ones are darker orchestral themes, with quite an edge to them. An incredible swan song from Talk Talk – a group that nobody would have guessed would go in this direction from the early years of their catchy crossover new romantic pop! The sound here is something else entirely – a fully-formed extension of the ideas they'd been exploring on Spirit Of Eden – in these beautiful soundscapes guided by Mark Hollis and the rest of the group – and filled in with work from a range of jazz and string players, including the legendary Brit jazz trumpeter Henry Lowther! There's a sense of denseness and texture that really marks the music – and a lot more warmth than similar 80s projects that might have come from 4AD, Factory, or ZTT – instead almost a "new subtlety" that had a huge influence on so many other groups to come. Tracks stream along with an amazing ease – and Jackie's perfectly-placed solos are right on the money every time! Classic-styled soul from Musiq Soulchild – his debut set for Def Soul, and the start of a great run of mellow grooves! As you might guess from the compressed wording of the title, the tunes here have a great set of flow – a laidback, kicked-back sort of sound that's not nearly as full-on or swaggering as other male soul of the time. Musiq's even more relaxed than D'Angelo here – and the tunes are awash in warm keyboard lines and mellow bubbling beats – all with plenty of room for Musiq to stretch out in some sweeeeeet vocal lines. Appalachian music great Roscoe Holcomb is best known for his Folkways recordings of the early 60s – but he sounds equally wonderful here in a rare performance recorded at a church in Portland in 1972! There's a stark, moody feel to the music – summed up perfectly in the photo on the cover, and billed by Folkways as the "high lonesome sound" – as Roscoe plays these hypnotic lines on banjo that are often filled with these cyclical passages that weave a dark musical tapestry, while his vocals reach for redemption with these qualities that are completely haunting.
