Link Wray is definitely Jack The Ripper here – ripping away with incredible guitar work that may well top his famous hits of the late 50s! The set is one of the sharpest ever issued by Philly indie Swan Records – an early home to The Beatles too – and the label's quick demise makes the set one of the more obscure Link Wray recordings, and a key bridge between his years to come as a singer and his early work that helped revolutionize the sound of the electric guitar! The production is great – almost some west coast sonic experiments at times – and titles include "Rumble", "Cross Ties", "Run Chicken Run", "Big Ben", "Dinosaur", and "Fat Back". A mighty impressive box set of previously unreleased Can – incredible stuff captured throughout their groundbreaking run from the late 60s to mid 70s – culled from hours and hours of tapes of the sessions that could have just as easily wound up on any of their classic records of the period! We figured that this would almost certainly be a solid companion piece to their initial run of classic albums – but the best thing about it is that out stands up really well on its own. Can pretty famously let the tapes run while they worked things out and let the magic happen spontaneously, so it stands to reason a lot of brilliant stuff was left on those tapes! The mix of nostalgic 50s ballroom pop and ethereal modern dream pop is unique, kind of otherworldly, and Julee's gorgeous vocals carry it over with style to spare. Despite the fact that he's one of the most influential jazz singers of all time (and certainly one with the biggest hit, as the original recording of "I'm In the Mood For Love" probably sold more copies than most other vocalese recordings combined), King Pleasure only ever cut three full albums – and this third one is the hardest to find! The album was recorded for United Artists during the time when Alan Douglas was cutting sides for the label, and it's very much in the same mode as his earlier recordings for Prestige and HiFi, apart from some occasional spare string backing that's added to the small group jazz playing. A brilliant later album from The Feelies – ultimately something of a swan song, serving as what many thought would be their final album! Time For Witness shows The Feelies as a band, much to their credit, assured enough in their legacy as avant rock innovators to be able to deliver the goods with a bit of subtlety – with layered guitar interplay and a sneaky melodic sensibility that's layered in a way that you hear something new years later. We've loved this underrated set for A&M for a couple decades and STILL feel like we learning from it! A beautiful swan song from the late, great John Hicks – sadly no longer with us on earth, but still making our richer with albums like this! Even in his later years, Hicks continued to evolve tremendously as a player – and this final album shows facets of his talents never expected in the early days – a solo sensitivity on quieter ballads, a pulsating rhythmic quality on Latin-tinged numbers, and still the powerful voice that emerged on his first dates as a sideman back in the 60s. Although the record offers a few different modes – three solo piano tracks, one duet with tenor, and some added percussion – the session's still a really unified one, all recorded on the same day with the intention of this full album always in mind – and not just scattered tracks put together after Hicks' death. The core quartet features Javon Jackson on tenor, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Victor Jones on drums – and 4 tracks feature Ray Mantilla on percussion and Elis Wood on flute. A very strange soundtrack from Andre Previn! The film is an obscure Natalie Wood vehicle – about an actress in Hollywood of the 30s – and it appears that Wood is the vocalist on the album's few numbers with lyrics, written by Andre with the help of Dory Previn, making the set one of their earliest collaborations! The vocal numbers are more 60s period sounding than 30s – and the instrumental ones are darker orchestral themes, with quite an edge to them. Titles include "Breakdown", "Swan's Way", "The Career Begins", "Sailboat", "The Convalarium", "The Circus Is A Wacky World", and two versions of "You're Gonna Hear From Me". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most unique entries in the "city experiment" series from Ropeadope – a long-running project that's featured work from Philly, Detroit, and Chicago – and which makes a mighty nice stop in the current scene in Mexico City! This set's as jazzy as the others, but also has a special sort of energy of its own – not older Mexican styles, as you might expect – but these inventive rhythms that showcase a post-jazz approach to the group – often with lots of percussion dancing along with electric elements in the rhythms – still opening up to solo space from some of the members of the group. The lineup's a quintet – with German Bringas on saxes and mini-trumpet, Erik Deutsch on keyboards, Jeronimo Gonzalez on bass and Jarana, Todd Clouser on guitar, and Orestes Gomez on drums – and Guadalupe Galvan delivers a bit of spoken word on the session too.
