World Pacific, 1958. Very Good ... $14.99 18.99
Very early work from Chico Hamilton – recorded in a piano trio mode that predates his more famous chamber quintet – working with pianist Freddie Gambrell and bassist Ben Tucker on a set of tunes that are mostly standards, and a few bluesy piano explorations. Titles include "Ex Ray's Friends", "Reservation Blues", "These Foolish Things", "You're The Cream In My Coffee", "Five Minutes More", and "Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ramsey LewisSun Goddess ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". Funky, electric, and sublimely wonderful all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – KC 33194 – still in the shrink with hype sticker and faint sticker spot.)

Duke EllingtonIntimate Ellington ... LP
Pablo, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A really well-titled set – as it offers up some more intimate takes on the Duke Ellington sound of the cusp of the 70s – with some especially nice trio and solo numbers that are well worth the price of the whole collection! The album starts with the amazing "Moon Maiden" – a track that has Ellington playing celeste, and reciting this weird little cosmic poem – almost in a Sun Ra-type aesthetic, and key proof that Duke was still stretching out a lot in his later years! There's also some excellent trio tracks that really get at that highly modern mode that Ellington hit at his Live At The Whitney session – mixed with a few more larger group numbers that, while not exactly intimate, still have a nicely laid back feel. In addition to "Moon Maiden", other tracks include "Tenz", "Eulb", "Layin On Mellow", "Edward The First", "Symphonette", and "Some Summer Fun". LP, Vinyl record album

Friedrich GuldaAs You Like It ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $43.99 49.99
As you like it – and we like it plenty! The album's a stunner from pianist Friedrich Gulda – one that still shows plenty of his high-powered, high-technique roots – but one that also really has him opening up a bit, too – almost bringing in a dose of soul jazz from the American scene, mixed up in really nice ways with the MPS ethos of the time! The group's a trio, with killer drums from Klaus Weiss and bass from JA Rettenbacher – but Gulda really dominates most tracks, playing with this fluid, open vibe that's mighty nice – extremely creative and compelling, and light years more compelling than some of the Oscar Peterson records cut for MPS during the same period. Titles include "Light My Fire", "Blues For HG", "All Blues", "East Of The Sun", and "I Only Have Eyes For You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy red label pressing. Cover has an unglued seam, light wear, and aging.)

Shin Joong Hyun & Yup JunsShin Joong Hyun & Yup Juns ... LP
Jigu (South Korea), 1974. Near Mint- ... $199.99
A heady set from mid 70s South Korea – the debut album from a mighty edgey little trio! The album's not nearly as psych as some of the other Korean efforts from the period – as the group's got a tight groove on most numbers, with a definite funk influence on the drums and bass – mixed nicely with heavy use of fuzz guitar, and Shin's weirdly soulful vocals! The set's not really a funk album, but it's not really funky rock either – kind of a unique hybrid, and a very original little set – especially when you throw the oddness of the Korean vocals into the mix. Titles include "Lady", "I Do Not Know", "Rising Sun", "I Love You", "Long Long Night", and "I Think There Was Someone Else". LP, Vinyl record album
(Third pressing of the record, from the 80s – matrix JLS 891.)

Iguanas (Iggy Pop)Iguanas ... LP
Norton, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
Some of the earliest work you'll ever hear from the young Jim Osterberg – material that features the famous Stooges frontman playing drums, and doing a slight bit of singing! The group sound a fair bit like you might expect from the cover – a tight, sharp, local combo who do a great job both with their own material, and some of the well-chosen covers they recorded – the kind of stomping garagey material that would have been a hit in the small Michigan clubs at the time! Most vocals are by guitarists Nick Kolokithas and Jim McLaughlin, the latter of whom formed the group with Iggy – and Osterberg does sing lead on a pretty great version of "California Sun", and also contributed the original composition "Again & Again" – a tune that definitely points the way towards The Stooges, and is one of the creepiest things on here. Other titles include "Mona", "I Don't Know Why", "Slow Down", "Walk Don't Run", "Out Of Limits", "Surfin Bird", "Things We Said Today", and "Wild Weekend". Collection features a great range of material – even some early 1963 demos, when the group with just a trio! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LaBelleLaBelle ... LP
Warner, 1971. Very Good ... $13.99
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three tremendous singers all working together at a level that really sets the standard for bad-rapping female soul in the 70s! We're not sure what happened with Patti and the group between their 60s material and this set – but whatever it was, it was something great – a turn towards a style that would keep them in the record racks for years! Titles include "Too Many Days", "Running Out Of Fools", "When The Sun Comes Shining Through", "Heart Be Still", and a nice version of "Time & Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thelonious MonkAlone In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A classic solo piano album from Thelonious Monk – recorded live in San Francisco, and maybe one of his best albums ever in the format! There's a special sort of quality that makes Monk's solo work so different from his trio, quartet, and larger group music – this real understanding of the piano, and a personal sense of sonic shading, even when covering some of his familiar compositions – maybe a bit like the way that Sun Ra's solo piano is also so distinct. Most of the tunes here are Monk originals or standards that Thelonious has played before at least a few times on record – but the solo setting almost has him pulling the tunes apart slowly – contemplating their components, then stepping through them with new inspiration as he puts them back together. Titles include "Blue Monk", "Pannonica", "Remember", "Reflections", "Bluehawk", "Everything Happens To Me", and "Round Lights". LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, 1960. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Fantastic early work as a leader from trombonist Julian Priester – a musician who'd later be known for his performances with Sun Ra, and his fusion material in the 70s – but who here works at the head of a tight hardbop combo in the best Riverside mode! The album's got Julian in both a quartet and quintet – with Jimmy Heath on tenor on some tracks, and a core trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Priester wails on the trombone as if he's playing a trumpet, and also contributed some great original tunes to the set too. Titles include "The End", "24 Hour Leave", "Julian's Tune", "Bob T's Blues", and "Under The Surface". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy SmithJimmy Smith At The Organ – Plays Pretty Just For You ... LP
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $29.99 34.99
Forget the "pretty" in the title here – as this stuff's not glossy or fancy – just wonderfully stripped-down Hammond work from Jimmy, performed with a trio that includes Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums. The title should probably read "mellow" instead of "pretty" – as the groove is very laidback and late-nite, with Jimmy hitting some of those really cool "unbridled" notes that are the best part of his early Blue Note sound. Titles include "East Of The Sun", "The Very Thought Of You", "Penthouse Serenade", and "Old Devil Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Mel Torme & George ShearingVintage Year ... LP
Concord, 1987. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A key pairing of vocalist Mel Torme and pianist George Shearing – two aging jazz artists who really helped re-ignite each others' careers in the 80s! The format here takes Torme back to the best years of his jazz roots – and features spare backing from Shearing's trio, at a level that's intimate, but never too sleepy or prone with cliche. Shearing's touch on the keys is wonderfully sensitive – never just standard backing to a singer – and in a way, he brings out a new sense of depth in Torme's vocals, one that never showed itself so strongly, or so personally in the past. And best of all, at the time of this recording, the duo haven't yet lapsed into the cliches that would later mar their pairing – and instead really work together beautifully in a fresh sense of discovery and joy in each others' company. Titles include "The Midnight Sun", "Someday I'll Find You", "Whisper Not/Love Me Or Leave Me", "Since I Fell For You", "Out Of This World", and "Little Man You've Got The Blues". ✨✧ DelegationPromise Of Love ... LP
State, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic first album from Delegation – a great male soul trio from the late 70s, and one who sound great on both sweet mellow tunes and more upbeat ones! Delegation have a sound that's quite unique, especially on this album – a groove with slightly tropical traces on some numbers, and a way of putting over a tune that borrows a bit from the earlier east coast harmony scene, but which wraps things up in a completely different style of production. The balance is hard to describe accurately, but it's definitely a standout for the time – and a real maturation of an earlier male soul group mode. Titles here include the famous break track "Oh Honey", plus "The Promise Of Love", "Mr Heartbreak", "Where Is The Love", "Soul Trippin", and "Let Me Take You To The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal 70s set from the legendary Air trio – and one of their wonderful non-American dates from the early years – material recorded overseas, where this famous AACM trio was maybe getting more attention than in the US! The album was originally a Japanese-only album, and it's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – a sublime set that really has them working strongly in their AACM roots, yet also reaching for a new sound too – a beautiful balance between jazz generations, carried off perfectly by the trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on drums! Tracks are long, and extremely inventive – and titles include "Through A Keyhole Darkly", "Air Raid", and "Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dee Dee BridgewaterAfro Blue ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible album by the Tamba 4 – one of 2 albums the Brazilian bossa combo did in the US for A&M Records, during the brief time when they were expanded to a quartet from the original Tamba Trio lineup! The set is completely sublime – a wonderful mix of the group's trademark harmony vocals and crackling bossa rhythms, with the warmly flowing CTI production style of the time – not funky like the CTI sound of the 70s, but a bit more sophisticated than the style Creed Taylor had been using earlier at Verve. Tracks are short, breezy, and often very lively – bossa grooving warmed in the California sun – and titles include "Samba Blim", "Watch What Happens", "Pregao", "San Salvador", "Know It All", and "Palladium". ✨✧ Grand Funk RailroadMark Don & Mel – 1969 to 1971 ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of work from the first chapter of Grand Funk Railroad – that moment when the group was just a power trio, and really helping to move their early blues inspirations into some fierce hard rock territory! The title's a reference to the lineup – Mark Farner on guitar and vocals, Don Brewer on drums and vocals, and Mel Schacher on bass – all working together in a mode that's really transformative over the short space of the material included in the set! At some level, GFR are almost an American equivalent of Free from the UK – a group who clearly have all the chops of the blues heroes they admire, but who are willing to let their hair down and hit more of a rock and roll starpower mode – unafraid to get a bit soulful on the vocals, and really letting their electric strings sing at an equally strong level. Titles include "Into The Sun", "Heartbreaker", "Time Machine", "Loneliness", "Are You Ready", "TNUC", "Inside Looking Out", "Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain", and "Paranoid". LP, Vinyl record album

Helen sings, Teddy swings, and the album's a great little session from Merrill's key years recording in Japan! There's a simple, unadorned quality to the record that's really great – a mode that Helen wasn't even using back in her earlier years in the US, and which almost helps her recapture a past that had slipped away before its time. Wilson's trio here features Larry Ridley on bass and Lenny McBrowne on drums – and his backing is sensitive and mellow, often letting Helen take center stage with her vocals. Titles include "Summertime", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "I Cover The Waterfront", "I Must Have That Man", "Embraceable You", and "East Of The Sun". Three numbers also feature Ridley and McBrowne replaced by Japanese players. LP, Vinyl record album

A great one by The Walker Brothers – recorded late in their career, when Scott Walker was really beginning to show signs of his later solo work, and starting to pen a few tunes of his own! The sound here is much deeper than the simple pop of the trio's earliest singles – and thanks to a number of original Scott Walker compositions, there's a range of themes here that's quite sophisticated, and an overall sound that's darker than standard 60s pop. Walker originals include "Genevieve" and "Orpheus" – which dovetail nicely into the style of Scott 1 or Scott 2. Other tracks include great covers of "Once Upon A Summertime", "I Will Wait For You", and "Just Say Goodbye" – plus "Everything Under The Sun", "It Makes No Difference Now", and "I Wanna Know". The first breakaway effort from the trio of Ernie Isley, Chris Jasper, and Marvin Isley – a set that's got an even leaner groove than some of the Isley Brothers material from years before! The group really hit their stride right away – stepping out in a sweet array of funky rhythms that have some definite 80s touches on the beats, yet which still share all the best Isleys elements overall! Guitar parts are especially sharp – that carved in soul sound that showed up in most Isleys projects from the early 70s onwards – and the vocals have a great sense of warmth and soul, especially on the mellower tunes in the set, which turn down some of the more hook-heavy rhythms heard on other tracks. Groovy late 60s work from Diana Ross & The Supremes – a record that has them breaking the Motown mold a bit, and hooking up with a nice variety of modder soul and pop modes! Tracks on the set include a few Motown-penned numbers, but the trio also tackle hits like "Everyday People", "Hey Western Union Man", "Let The Music Play", and a great Hair-inspired medley of "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In"! Riverside, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. A real standout in the catalog of The Three Suns – one of those records that shines even more than their dozens of other albums, thanks to a tightly syncopated groove! As with other sides by the trio, the music here is from a blend of organ, accordion, and guitar – plus well-chosen other instruments used sparingly – but there's also a bit of a bottom groove to the record too, supplied by loosely used electric basslines that sort of buoy up the Suns' sound, and push them away from outdated modes of earlier years. The approach is evocative and often grooving in a "Baby Elephant Walk" sort of way – and titles here include "Fleur De Paree", "Moritat", "High Noon", "Terry Theme", "Canadian Sunset", "Ruby", and "Meet Mr Callaghan". Early greatness from Wes Montgomery – and a session that's got a gritty edge that takes Wes back to his Indianapolis roots! The album's one of the few of the time to feature the unsung Hammond hero Mel Rhyne – a player who worked with Wes at his start, but has only gotten stronger acclaim in recent decades as part of his comeback. Rhyne's a key force in the record – working alongside Montgomery's guitar and the drums of Jimmy Cobb – in a loose, open trio that has Mel participating as strongly in the rhythms as he does in the solo side of the album. ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeGood, The Bad, And The Ugly – Original Soundtrack ... LP
United Artists, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the first big moments of global fame for the legendary Ennio Morricone – and a record that still stands as one of his landmark albums all these many years later! The set's famous for its haunting theme – that "wah-wah-wah" melody that led to countless covers and samples over the years – but the whole thing's a lot more complex than just that tune – with lots of the same sense of space and brooding that Morricone brought to his music for Once Upon A Time In The West – with careful use of key instruments on a track by track basis, and these floating lines that almost signaled a whole new way of recording music for a film soundtrack. And yes, there's certainly key western elements like guitar or harmonica – but maybe more striking are all the points at which these obvious tropes disappear – to leave us with those really unique Morricone sounds that go way beyond music! Titles include "The Sundown", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", "Marcia", "The Desert", "The Strong", and "The Trio". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips (Brazil), 1962. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever album from the legendary Tamba Trio – and the start of an amazing 60s run that really set them apart from other bossa combos of the time! The group hits hard right out of the box with the amazing piano of Luiz Eca and sublime vocal harmonies sung by all three members of the group – scatting along wordlessly with the tunes in a really haunting way! Drumming by Helcio Milito is incredibly tight – almost the blueprint for snapping bossa rhythms – and the whole album is produced to perfection with a sound that's dark and light at the same time. The sound is stunning, the playing is tight, and the tracks groove like nothing you could imagine! Cuts include "Tamba", "Samba Novo", "O Barquinho", "Influencia Do Jazz", "Batida Differente", and "Quem Quizer Encontrar O Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

King, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99 16.99
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! He cut this one with the groovy Dee Felice Trio – a jazz-based combo that he recorded on their own for King, on another very rare, very excellent record. The band's in similar form here, although not necessarily as funky – and they do a great job of giving James' vocals a jazzy twist that they don't have on other albums – proving yet again that The Godfather can handle just about any sort of groove that he wants! Features a wonderfully groover version of "Sunny", which moves along very nicely – plus remakes of "There Was A Time" and "Cold Sweat", along with the tracks "Uncle" and "That's Life". Mellow magic from Betty – one of her first "comeback" albums for Verve, and an excellent set of tunes that still keeps the same feel as her 80s work on her own label. The group on most tunes is a trio – with Benny Green on piano, Michael Bowie on bass, and Winard Harper on drums – but some tracks feature additional tenor from Don Braden, blowing soulfully next to Betty's incredible voice. Tunes skip around with imagination and a sense of soul in places where you'd never expect it – and titles include "Look What I Got", "The Man I Love", "That Sunday That Summer", "All I Got", and "Just Like The Movies". One of those records that was a classic from the moment it was first released – the legendary second effort from the trio of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash – with added bonus of Neil Young in the mix, which gives the whole thing a current of darkness that's completely mindblowing – especially in comparison to the harmonies of the quartet! These aren't the vocal patterns of the Sunshine Pop generation of a few years before – and CSNY find a way to capture all the darkness of the fading light of the 60s, while finding a special space for more thoughtful, sensitive sounds that never would have gotten a chance a few years before. Every track's a classic – and titles include "Carry On", "Our House", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Deja Vu", "Country Girl", "Everybody I Love You", "Woodstock", and "Teach Your Children". FugsIt Crawled Into My Hand, Honest ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Sealed Gatefold ... $24.99
Some of the most tuneful work we've ever heard from The Fugs – tracks that almost border on pop-psyche at times, but still get nicely tripped out at other moments! Side one has the trio almost touching territory of other Reprise rock from the times – slightly psyche, slightly country, slightly Sunshine at points – and side two is a bit more of a hippy dippy freakout, with a huge number of shorter tunes that flow sweetly into one another! Some of these actually have a great sound art sort of feel, and a fw even get slightly funky too – all with a new sense of tightness that arguably gives the group a lot more power than before! Titles include "Johnny Pissoff Meets The Red Angel", "Burial Waltz", "Crystal Liaison", "Wide Wide River", "Marijuana", "We're Both Dead Now, Alice", "Life Is Strange", "The National Haiku Contest", "The Divine Toe", "Leprechaun", and "Grope Need (Part I)". Argo, 1965. Very Good- ... $6.99
One of the biggest jazz albums of the 60s – and a crucial crossover set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio! The record's a live one, which gives the group a perfect chance to show off their special genius – not just soulful grooves from Ramsey on piano, but wickedly sharp and playful basslines from the great Eldee Young, and equally inventive work on drums from Redd Holt – both fantastic players who would soon break out on their own as Young Holt Unlimited! There's a surprising mix of modes on the record, too – as Ramsey begins with the group's classic reading of "The In Crowd" – formerly a soul tune, but maybe more of a hit here in their instrumental reading – then runs through material that really showcases the creative depth of the group, on titles that include "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Felicidade", "Come Sunday", and "You Been Talkin Bout Me Baby". One of the grooviest girl groups of the 60s – a fab trio who hailed from Brooklyn, and who worked in the best sweet styles of both soul and rock groups of the time! Reparata & The Delrons have a sound that's a real cut above the usual – a way of handling a tune that's free of some of the cliches of other groups from the period, but which also does a good job of bringing out their best elements too. It's hard to sum up just why the group's so great – but it's possibly because they were working at the end of the girl group era, and have a bit more of a depth to their work – a style that's also influenced a bit by harmony folk and Sunshine Pop, but which is stil unabashedly focused on shorter tunes with groovy hooks. Not to be confused with the group Pleasure, or the ex-Police leadman Sting – this group are a pretty darn sweet disco trio with a really nice groove! The sound's a bit different than other disco references we might use – not really New York, European, or Canadian – and done with a bit more soul than you might think. The vocals are silly at times, but also pretty darn catchy – and sung with a good sense of the hook, so that they're not as buried in the mix as on other disco tunes. Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
An incredible snapshot of the funky soul genius of Sly Stone in an early transitional period – featuring all the known recordings of his short-lived Stone Flower label and production house from 1969-1970! Sly was a rising star at this point, and while the Stone Flower Productions name had been established already for Sly & The Family Stone's work-to-date, there was a brief period when he and manager David Kapralik set out make Stone Flower an official management and production house – and recorded some great tunes with female vocal trio Little Sister, funky soul singer and harmonica player Joe Hicks and funk rock sextet 6ix – as well as some gems sung by Sly himself. Sly & The Family Stone were soon to take off in a really huge way, his business relationship with Kapalik was becoming strained, and other factors behind-the-scenes made it impossible for Stone Flower Productions to really take root, but this brief period is fantastic. We're so glad it's been dug up and collected here! The cuts are primarily written and produced by Sly Stone – with Sly out front on "Just Like A Baby", "Africa", "Spirit" and "Scared" – and other great tracks include "You're The One" and "Somebody's Watching You" by Little Sister, "Home Sweet Home (Part 2)" and "I'm Going Home (Part 1)" by Joe Hicks, "Trying To Make You Feel Good", "You Can, We Can" by 6ix and more. 18 tracks in all – with a nice booklet of notes by Alec Palao, and an interview with the elusive Sly Stone himself! Seminal material from Cecil Taylor – an explosive album that was one of the first to show the world just how much his style had evolved since the late 50s! When Taylor first showed up on the scene, he was already a pianist that was going farther out than just about anyone – but by the time of this 1962 performance in Copenhagen, he'd really taken off – working in these massive flurries of keyboard intensity that were unlike anything anyone had ever heard before – the full-blown Taylor aesthetic that's endured for decades, set up perfectly here in a trio with some brilliantly bracing alto sax by Jimmy Lyons, and equally free work on drums by Sunny Murray! Roadshow, 1979. Sealed ... $19.99
A sweet second set from Touch Of Class – a group who broke big in the indie underground of the 70s with their debut – and who still continue here in a great blend of upbeat rhythms and richer soul styles! Some numbers are clearly aimed at the dancefloor – as on their debut – but these guys can also slide into a mellower number with a laidback harmony vibe – a blend that's rooted in some of the younger east coast group modes of the early 70s, but which is taken here to some slightly more mature territory by the trio. Gerald and Pete Jackson of the group handled the arrangements – in a way that's nice and fresh – and a good change from some of the more "packaged" approaches on other albums of this nature. Ben Webster & Don ByasBen Webster Meets Don Byas ... LP
Saba (Germany), 1968. Very Good+ ... $18.99 26.99
A rare meeting of these two American giants of the tenor sax – brought together at the end of the 60s in Europe, both recording late in their careers, but with a laidback and open approach that's really wonderful! The format here is quite loose – a bit like some of the late hours, swing-based sides on Prestige at the end of the 50s – with longish tracks that let both players state their solos in clean, well-recorded phrasings – with gentle support from a trio that includes Tete Montoliu on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. There's a few faltering moments at times, but they also add a nice degree of humanity to the record – kind of a dimming genius that might not have been allowed on an American session by either player, but which speaks volumes here for the time and distance both players had travelled! Lovely lovely work from Irene Kral – a Japanese-only session from the 70s, and one of her best efforts from the time! Irene's vocals have never sounded better – strong and confident, but not in a cloying way that gets in the way of the tunes – working with a piano trio led by Alan Broadbent that's wonderfully adaptive to the mood of the tunes, especially from a rhythmic standpoint – as a number of the tracks turn out to be great groovers in the end! The album's a perfect example of the way that American singers were always able to find a hipper vibe when recording in Japan during the 70s (like Dee Dee Bridgewater or Lorez Alexandria, to name a few others recorded this way!) The set's got a great version of "On A Clear Day", a snapping jazz dance take on "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", plus the cuts "Star Eyes", "Misty Roses", "Angel Eyes", "Corcovado", and "Everytime We Say Goodbye". ✨✧ Oscar PetersonIn A Romantic Mood ... LP
Verve, 1955. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You". A very early date as a leader by McCoy Tyner – cut at a time when he was making big waves in the John Coltrane Quartet, but also sounding plenty darn great on his own! The group here's a trio – with Coltrane associates Art Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – and the warm familiarity of the players is clear from the very first notes of the set. There's a lighter, more lyrical – and possibly more sentimental – style going on here – one that echoes piano work of earlier generations, but which also shows plenty of signs of the growing modalism in Tyner's lines – especially on the striking original tracks "Sunset", "Effendi", "Inception", and "Blues For Gwen". Brunswick, Late 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky soul instrumental classic – all the way through! The team of Eldee Young and Redd Holt first came to prominence with Ramsey Lewis' first Chicago trio, then branched out on their own as a jazz act – but by the time of this set, they'd picked up a hipper, funkier late 60s sort of soul groove – and were working with larger backings and a nice deal of extra bass! The pianist in the group is the super-dope Ken Chaney – a player who uses space as much as he uses notes – providing a cool counterpoint to the funky and jazzy riffing of the Young/Holt bass/drum combo. The album includes the landmark track "Soulful Strut" – with tinkling piano over funky backings mixed with sweetened strings – and other tracks include "Funky Is As Funky Does", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Who's Making Love", "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy?", "Be By My Side", and "Please Sunrise". The group's a bit more modern than some of Art's usual combos, which makes for really surprising results, and often a much harder sound – one that matches the growing intensity of Woods during this part in his career. A great meeting of two generations of jazz – and one that really blows the top off some of Dexter Gordon's other European sessions of the time! The setting here is definitely one that's more a Gordon-based date – long tracks with rhythm backing from a trio with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums. But unlike some of the other long-blown Gordon-heavy albums for the stretch, the presence of Jackie McLean really brings in a new sort of fire – the kind of soaring, soulful energy he brought to his own records in these immediate post-Blue Note years – almost a Coltrane influence, and a sense of spiritualism that really comes through on some of his solo moments – even in this relatively straight setting. Verve, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful meeting of two mid-century musical talents – the piano of Oscar Peterson and the arrangements of Nelson Riddle – a surprisingly wonderful pairing, heard here on a rare set for Verve! Peterson never recorded with strings nearly as much as he did with a trio, but almost all of his dates in the format are wonderful – and this album may well be one of the best! Riddle's nicely restrained here – using that new sense of space he was finding in the 60s, and moving a bit away from more sentimental modes of the 50s, into some laidback jazzy charts that are really great. Peterson's piano steps through the arrangements wonderfully – never trying to dominate, and instead really going with the flow that Riddle provides. There's a mature sound to this record that really points the way towards some of the later Verve and CTI orchestrations of the 60s – proof that Riddle could have a huge influence on styles to come – and titles include "Judy", "My Ship", "Nightingale", "A Sleeping Bee", "Goodbye", "Portrait Of Jenny", "Come Sunday", "Round Midnight", and "My Foolish Heart". The set's got Dorothy right out front in a trio setting – working with bassist Herman Wright and drummer John Tooley – in a wonderfully jazzy take on the sound of the harp – an instrument used here in a way that's never flowery, or linked to classical modes at all – but instead in a very unique space that's somewhere between jazz bass and guitar – as Ashby plucks these hip notes with a very soulful vibe! The album's got a special Chess/Argo sort of vibe – one that really opens up Ashby's Detroit roots. Dorothy wrote two originals for the set – "John R" and "Booze" – and other titles include "Lonely Melody", "Django", "Gloomy Sunday", and "Lil Darlin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ann BurtonBlue Burton (Japanese pressing) ... LP
CBS/Sony (Japan), 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully gentle album from vocalist Ann Burton – recorded with sublime accompaniment from the trio of pianist Louis Van Dyke, a fragile and spare talent on the keys – and a perfect match for Burton on the mood of the album! Ann's vocals really come across with the mature grace that's always made us love her so much – and overall, the session's got a strength that goes far beyond most of her indie albums from later years. Most tunes are extremely spare – with bass stepping out first behind Ann's vocals, as Louis' piano lines sneak in with just a few quiet lines that slowly grow as the tune progresses – all in a style that's neither a cliche of older torch, nor the too-adult mode of more pop jazz vocal albums of the time. Piet Noordjik plays alto sax on a few of the tunes on the set – and titles include "You've Changed", "The Good Life", "Go Away Little Boy", "It's Easy To Remember", "But Not For Me", "He Was Too Good To Me", and "Sunny". ✨✧ GenesisDuke ... LP
Atlantic, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Phil's a few years away from being an MTV figure here – and is instead more of a proud progger, finding a way to bring things into tighter energy – and really balance the whole thing beautifully. Titles include the hits "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" – balanced with "Duke's Travels", "Dutchess", "Behind The Lines", "Heathaze", and "Cul De Sac". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Takehiro HondaI Love You ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Straight trio grooving from Takehiro Honda – but pretty darn great work nonetheless! The album's a nice bridge between the harder, more rhythmic pulse of his early soul jazz sessions, and the later, freer sound of his more lyrical trio sides – and the whole album shows Honda opening up with a new sense of freedom, really taking off on the keys of the piano, while still keeping a nicely understated groove going at the bottom. The rest of the trio includes Yoshio Suzuki on bass and Kan Murakami on drums – and titles include "Sunny", "I Love You", "Autumn Leaves", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Here's That Rainy Day". ✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Revolution Part 2 (Black Heart) ... LP
Blackheart, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Early work from the great Bob Marley – material cut with the initial lineup of The Wailers, at a time before the group would go onto much greater global fame on Island Records! The equally legendary Lee Scratch Perry is at the helm on production – and although the music here has more rough edges than some of the polished commercial work of Marley's classic years, that also makes for a heck of a lot of appeal – and a quality that also links the group's work more tightly to some of the other Jamaican trios of the rocksteady years. A few cuts here were remade later, and titles include "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock My Boat", "Fussing & Fighting", "Put It On", "Duppy Conqueror (Version 4)", "Kaya", "Memphis", "African Herbsman" "Brain Washing", and "Sun Is Shining". In the original Upsetter mono mix, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anita O' DayAnita O' Day Recorded Live At The Berlin Jazz Festival ... LP
MPS, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really great later album from Anita – one recorded live in Berlin, with some backing by the George Arvanitas trio – at the time when they had the kick-ass rhythm section of Jacky Samson on bass and Charles Saudrais on drums. Anita's in a much more swinging groove than usual – opening up in an MPS-like setting that's quite different from her Verve albums. The highlight of the record is a nice funky version of "Sunny", which starts with a great drum bit at the beginning – and other tracks include "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Your Wings", "On A Clear Day", and a medley of "Yesterday" and "Yesterdays". ✨✧ West Coast Pop Art Experimental BandWest Coast Pop Art Experimental Band – Volume 2 ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The amazing second album from this ultra-cool group – a set that's even weirder and wilder than their debut! The trio are maybe one of the few who really live up to the farthest expectations of the psych generation – as they're really open to let their minds fly in their choice of lyrics, instrumentation, and overall presentation of the record – which hardly seems the sort to yield any sort of singles at all, even though a few of the tunes are downright catchy! Instead, the whole thing's put forth as a dark statement on late 60s society – with a sound that's as heavy as the subject matter, and not afraid to really pus all the freak and fuzz as far as it can go! Quite surprising, even for the Reprise label – and tracks include "Queen Nymphet", "Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday", "In the Arena", "Smell of Incense", "Suppose They Gave A War & No One Comes", "Overture Wcpaeb (part 2)", and "Carte Blanche" – which supposedly they were given in recording the album! ✨✧ Yosuke YamashitaHot Menu – Live At The Newport Jazz Festival 79 ... LP
Frasco (Japan), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A New York performance by the legendary pianist Yosuke Yamashita, but one that burns every bit as strongly as his famous albums from Japan – thanks in part to some really incredible work from Akira Sakata on alto and clarinet! There's few folks who could ever hope to match the Cecil Taylor-like energy of Yamashita on the piano, but Sakata always seems to rise to the challenge wonderfully – and with the drums of Shota Koyama along for the ride, the trio must have left the New York audience with their jaws on the floor – especially as most of the US had not been able to get access to Yosuke's records at the time. The set features three very long tracks – "Rabbit Dance", "Mina's Second Theme", and "Sunayama". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1957. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A classic album featuring music from The Sound Of Jazz – the legendary 1957 TV show that brought together some of the greatest talents then working in jazz! Unusual for TV, the show really seemed to capture the players at their best – and recorded some tremendous live performances that were among the most moving ever filmed by the artists involved. Highlights include "The Train & The River" played by the Jimmy Giuffre Trio, "Fine & Mellow" sung by Billie Holiday, "Rosetta" and "Wild Man Blues" by the Red Allen All-Stars, "Blues" by Jimmy Giuffre & Pee Wee Russell, "I Left My Baby" by Count Basie with Jimmy Rushing, "Dickie's Dream" by Count Basie, and "Nervous", a solo piano number by Mal Waldron. ✨✧ Albert AylerProphecy ... LP
ESP, 1964. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CrusadersStanding Tall ... LP
MCA, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The Crusaders standing tall at the start of the 80s – getting great grooves from the lean trio of Wilton Felder on saxes and bass, Joe Sample on keyboards, and Stix Hooper on drums! The mighty Barry Finnerty handles most of the guitar solos here – although David T Walker also plays a bit too – and other high-end guests round out the sound with a very professional feel, including Billy Preston on organ, Marcus Miller on bass, and Larry Carlton on more guitar. As with other Crusaders albums of this vintage, vocals play a part in the sound – sung here by Joe Cocker on two tracks, sounding almost better here than on his own material. Titles include "Standing Tall", "This Old World's Too Funky For Me", "Luckenbach Texas", "The Longest Night", and "Sunshine In Your Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter Herbolzheimer - MPS Rhythm Comb. & BrassPower Play ... LP
MPS, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Classic funky MPS material from Peter Herbolzheimer and his legendary group of European and American ex-patriot players. The record grooves on hard and funkily, in a way that you'd hardly guess from a German bandleader – but which has become a favorite with groovers and jazz dancers worldwide over the years! The group is great, and soloists include Dusko Goykovich, Dieter Reith, Herb Geller, and Art Famer – and the album includes 5 long tracks, including "Timbales Calientes", "Sunflower Chant", "What'd I Say", and a nice take on Horace Silver's "Senor Blues".
