✨✧ Sun RaHours After ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A strange little late record from Sun Ra – transpose Hours After to After Hours, and you'll get a good idea of the feel of this one – late night, soulful and bluesy, with a sound that's in keeping with the traditionalism of the late Arkestra! The group's an all-star one – Pat Patrick, Danny Thompson, Marshall Allen, and John Gilmore – and Ra sings a bit on the session. Side B of the session steps out a bit more from the first side – which is the more traditional one – and Ra plays a bit of synthesizer, in a 70s avant kind of mode. Titles include "Dance Of The Extra Terrestrians", "Love On A Far Away Planet", "Hours After", and "Beautiful Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a trace of a sticker.)

✨✧ Sun RaJazz In Silhouette (2LP edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sun Ra's really moving forward with this classic set – refining the sound of his Chicago-based Arkestra, and reaching for new territory that moves him way past familiar jazz modes! The cover bills the group as playing "music from tomorrow's world" – and you can definitely hear that on some titles here, including one number that features Ra on some really haunting celeste, and another that features Marshall Allen making weird noises with his mouthpiece! The group is all greats from the old days – John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute, Pat Patrick on baritone and flute, James Spaulding on alto and flute, Hobart Dotson on trumpet, Charles Davis on baritone, and Ronnie Boykins on bass – and titles include "Hours After", "Saturn", "Ancient Ethiopia", and "Blues At Midnight". This fantastic expanded reissue includes bonus material – some tracks that appeared on the album Sun Sound Pleasure, and other recordings too – titles that include "Hour Of Parting", "Round Midnight", "Hours After", "Velvet", "Enlightenment", "Hours After (single version)", "Great Balls Of Fire (single version)", "Back In Your Own Backyard", and the unreleased tunes "Blues For Saturn", "State Street (alternate)", and "Horoscope (incomplete)". ✨✧ Sun RaLive at Montreux ... LP
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue.)

✨✧ Sun RaOut There A Minute ... LP
Blast First (UK), Late 60s/1989. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A legendary collection of work from Sun Ra – rare 60s New York recordings from the Arkestra archive, put together at the end of the 80s, at a time when there was very little Ra material on the market! The quality of the work here is extremely high – and the tunes are almost a bit more personal and intimate that some of Ra's more drawn-out recordings of the 70s. Some of the jazz is somewhat straight, but always inflected with creative touches – especially on the rhythms, or on some of the odder instruments used – and there's almost a flavor here that hearkens back to some of the best Arkestra recordings during their later years in Chicago. Titles include "Somewhere In Space", "Out There A Minute", "Starships & Solar Boats", "Other Worlds", and"When Angels Speak Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a cut corner, some wear at the spine, and bent corners in back.)

✨✧ Sun RaSpace Is The Place – Original Soundtrack (3LP colored vinyl box set – with blu-ray, DVD & tote bag) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, 1972. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest records Sun Ra ever made – music to accompany the strange film Space Is The Place – which itself was an odd mixture of science fiction and blacksploitation-type action! The sounds here are sometimes in the usual Arkestra mode – wonderfully exotic rhythms mixed with freewheeling jazz solos – but other parts seem to follow more of a soundtrack-styled need – and include some bolder action riffs, spare scene-setting moments, and even some strong vocal themes. Titles include "Watusa", "Calling Planet Earth", "Mysterious Crystal", "Outerspaceways Incorporated", "Cosmic Forces", "Satellites Are Spinning", and a version of "Space Is The Place". This special set also includes the bonus Mathematics Of The Altered Destiny, a full LP of unreleased music from Sun Ra featuring June Tyson – and the first ever US Blu-ray release of the film, and a standard DVD as well! LP, Vinyl record album
(Pressed on heavy gold, silver, and green vinyl – in a box set, with blu-ray, DVD, booklet, and Outer Space Employment Agency tote bag! Box is open but all items are unused.)

✨✧ Sun RaLanquidity ... LP
Philly Jazz, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An amazing album from Sun Ra – a set that's got some of the same soulful focus as Space Is The Place, and a really surprising sense of groove on many moments! The record's actually a bit funky – if you can believe it – and was recorded with electric keyboards, bass, and guitar (played by the mysterious Disco Kid) – at the studios of Bob Blank, at a time when he was really able to capture the many strands of music that would come together in a performance, then find just the right way to put them over on record! The album was originally dismissed by many Sun Ra fans for being a funk sell-out album – but over the years, it's become a prized album for its cosmic sense of soul and great focus of the group's more far-reaching ideas – and at some level, it's probably the sound that most people imagine the Arkestra to have when they're first starting out, rather than the more avant material that dominates most of their catalog. The whole thing is wonderful – and titles include "That's How I Feel", "Where Pathways Meet", "Twin Stars of Thence", and "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun Ra, Dr John, Muddy Waters, & OthersAnn Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival 1972 ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from this legendary Detroit festival – a mighty assemblage of roots and jazz performers that was put together by John Sinclair! The event was legendary at the time – and has lived on strongly via this great recording by Atlantic – one that really gets at the special fire of all the performers, and their very enthusiastic welcome by the audience too! Most of the material here is blues – but the set features a key track from Sun Ra & His Solar Myth Arkestra – a performance of "Live Is Splendid" from the Space Is The Place Suite. Other tracks include "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Dr John, "Road Runner" by Jr Walker, "Wang Dang Doodle" by Koko Taylor, "Gambler's Blues" by Otis Rush, "Ain't That Loving You" by Bobby Blue Bland, "Honey Bee" by Muddy Waters, "Form Kinetic" by CJQ, "Dust My Broom" by Johnny Shines, and "Goin Down" by Freddie King. Clifford Jordan & John GilmoreBlowing In From Chicago ... LP
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A landmark session that features two of the greatest tenor talents to emerge from the rich Chicago scene of the 50s! Jordan was well-known to jazz fans, or would be within a few years – but Gilmore's rarely heard in this sort of setting, as most of his recording career was spent in the company of Sun Ra's Arkestra. The record features the duo in a twin-tenor frontline, with backing by Horace Silver, Curly Russell, and Art Blakey. Ostensibly a blowing session, but much tighter than you'd expect – and with a hard heavy Blue Note groove. Titles include "Evil Eye", "Status Quo", "Bo-Till", and "Blue Lights". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 90s mono 180 gram Connoisseur Series reissue. Cover has bumped corners.)

Yusef LateefCry Tender ... LP
New Jazz/Prestige, 1959. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Wonderful late 50s work by Yusef Lateef – played in that "jazz exotic" style he was using to perfect form at the time, a mixture of the lyrical hard bop of the Horace Silver group, with some of the more spare and eastern styles used by groups like the early Sun Ra Arkestra. The drummer, Frank Gant, makes ample use of brushes and mallets to keep the rhythms in a mode that works with the overall sound – and other players include trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer and pianist Hugh Lawson, both of whom were part of the super-hip Detroit scene that spawned Lateef. Titles include "Cry Tender", "Butter's Blues", "Dopolous", "Sea Breeze", and "The Snow Is Green". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 90s OJC pressing. Cover has bent corners.)

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70He Miss Road ... LP
Sterns, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a set from the legendary Fela Kuti – a classic set of Nigerian grooves produced by Ginger Baker – who was already a frequent musical partner of Fela! The set's got a sharp groove right from the start, and possibly some slighty darker elements than some of Kuti's other records of the time – particularly in the way the guitars echo out next to the saxophones, which are often highlighted by the wonderful rhythms of the great Tony Allen! "Monday Morning In Lagos" is a really blue-tinged track that goes beyond the usual Afro Funk of the time – one of those moments when it seems as if there's a surprising link between Fela's Africa 70 group and Sun Ra's Arkestra. "He Miss Road" is a burning, building groove that has the keyboards layered up strongly with the saxes – and "It's No Possible" is a great side-long track with this really wonderful use of electric piano – again sometimes at a level that almost feels Sun Ra-like! LP, Vinyl record album
