SugarloafSugarloaf ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $8.99
A fantastic debut from Sugarloaf – a group who managed to use the Hammond organ in ways that were just as strong as the guitar in most other groups! The approach here seems to draw a lot from all the best changes taking place in soulful jazz – as Jerry Corbetta manages his keyboards with this lean quality that's wonderful, and balanced with the bass, drums, and guitar in this perfect way – almost funky at many moments, and still pretty damn sharp even if not! You'll probably know that quality from the group's classic hit "Green Eyed Lady" – but it really shines through on the whole album, on titles that include "Bach Doors Man", "Chest Fever", "Things Gonna Change Soon", and "Train Kept A Rollin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner, light surface wear.)
Also available Sugarloaf (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD 18.99

✨✧ SugarloafSpaceship Earth (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The searing second album from Sugarloaf – a set that has Jerry Corbetta wailing even more heavily on the organ than before, and the group working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them such a big act at the time! Corbetta also handles most of the lead vocals, but the group draws plenty of strength from an ability to harmonize warmly too – not in the softer modes of some of their contemporaries, but with a soaring vibe that really works well with the edges on the guitar, and the full-on bass and drums that propel the whole album along! A gem of a record that was big at the time, and never gets the due it deserves all these many years later – with cuts that include "Rusty Cloud", "Hot Water", "Spaceship Earth", "Woman", "Music Box", "Tongue In Cheek", and "Mother Nature's Wine". George DukeBrazilian Love Affair ... LP
Epic, 1979. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A wonderful album from George Duke – and one of our favorite records from his legendary years at Columbia! George Duke's always had plenty of Brazilian elements in his music – but this album really brings them all together – offering up a perfect blend of Duke's keyboards and Cali soul with some key additions from the Rio scene of the time – a mix of singers and musicians who really help round out the sound and authenticate George's ears for Brazilian music! The album was actually recorded down in Rio – and features great contributions from Simone, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Silva, Toninho Horta, and Airto – all working beautifully under Duke's leadership, on cuts that include "Brazilian Love Affair", "Cravo E Canela", "Brazilian Sugar", "Sugarloaf Mountain", "Ao Que Vai Nascer", and "I Need You Now". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

Sol SetOla De Novo ... LP
All Good, 2022. New Copy ... $22.99 25.99
Some of the richest work we've heard from John Beltran in years – a well-crafted little record that's bubbling over with influences from jazz and Brazilian music – and which make Beltran sound a lot more like a group leader than just a producer in the studio! The album's criss-crossed with vocal parts that really recall the glory days of 70s Brazilian jazz – while the rhythms pulsate with some of the more contemporary elements you'd expect from Beltran's other projects, but handled with soulful warmth that really holds the whole thing together as a full length set! There's plenty to love here if you dig older Brazilian rhythms, breezy 70s club jazz, and some of the warmer currents of contemporary club – on titles that include "Rhythm Of The Sun", "Linda Sao Paulo", "Sugarloaf", "Beija Flor", "Pour Le Moment", "Bliss Mode", and "Let's Get Away". ✨✧ Monty Alexander 7Jamento ... LP
Pablo, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nice mellow fusion from Monty, recorded in LA with a group that includes Ernest Ranglin on guitar, plus Andy Simpkins on bass, and added drums and percussion from 4 other players. There's a bit of steel drums on the record, in the style that Alexander was using on other MPS sides from the time – and the tracks have a nice mellow funky feel to them. Titles include 'Mango Rengue", "Jamento", "Sugarloaf At Twilight", "Slippery", and "Accompong". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brass RingGazpacho ... LP
Dunhill/ABC, 1968. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A more Latin-styled set than usual from The Brass Ring – as you might guess from the title and cover! The sound is slightly fuller here – a bit of brassy trumpets used sparingly, but just enough to fill out the groove at times – and other new elements too, like acoustic guitar, added rhythms, and a few other bits that help the group keep things fresh, while still staying in the same blend of dreamy, easy, and groovy modes hit on previous albums. There's a similarity here to some of the best playful instrumental work on Verve or Impulse at the time – and titles include "Girl From Ipanema", "This Afternoon I Saw It Rain", "Sugarloaf", "Little Sea Shells", "Gazpacho", "Yours", and "Amanha".
