✨✧ Spike WilnerContrafactus ... CD
Cellar Live, 2024. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A record from a pianist we totally love, but one who also seems to have really unfurled a bold new chapter in his life as well – with music that's very different than some of the previous albums that Spike Wilner's given us, full of joy, life, and this boundless sense of optimism that comes as a real surprise! Spike's never been one to be lazy on the keys – but here, he feels like he's bursting forth with all this fresh imagination – as if he's seen some sort of life that's driving him onward, and which is also shared by trio members Paul Gill on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums – a group who seem to move effortlessly, driven by the vision of the leader. Titles include "Contrafactus", "Happy Ending", "Cognitive Dissonance", "At First Blush", "Kinetic Neurosis", and "Ants Go Marching". CD

✨✧ George ColemanGeorge Coleman Live At Smalls Jazz Club ... CD
Cellar Live, 2023. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A perfect setting for the rich-voiced tenor of the great George Coleman – presented here as one of the best titles so far in the strongly-revived Live At Smalls series! Smalls is one of those players who's been on countless albums over the years, and turned out plenty of great work – but who also seems to come across with a freshness, a newness in a key live recording like this – much the same way that a player like Johnny Griffin could always show that at the core, jazz can be a spontaneous expression that's sometimes best presented in an unfettered sort of space. The core group is just right for Coleman, and often step back to give him plenty of space – Spike Wilner on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and titles include "Blues For Smalls", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "At Last", "Four", "Meditation", and "My Funny Valentine". Jesse DavisLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2012. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the best albums in years from altoist Jesse Davis – recorded in a relaxed, open-ended style that really unlocks some new magic in his horn! Davis' studio records are all quite nice, but this live date really takes him to places we've never heard before – a really old school exploration of alto modes that brings us back to Stitt or Criss, and shows a long-winded creativity we hardly knew that Jesse had. The rhythm section really helps the feel of the record, too – with a lot of humanity in the piano of Spike Wilner, mixed with the impeccable work of Peter Washington on bass and Billy Drummond on drums. Ryan Kisor's trumpet adds one more horn to the mix – and titles include "I'll Close My Eyes", "Piece Of The Apple", "Pray Thee/Beyond The Storm", "Journey From The Lighthouse", and "Body & Soul". CD

Descendants Of Mike & PhoebeSpirit Speaks (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Strata East/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon". Gearbox (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $23.99 29.99 About April 15, 2024 (delayed)
A very very cool live set from the great tenorist Tubby Hayes – one that has him working in an unusual quartet with Louis Stewart on guitar – a setting that makes a really nice change for Hayes! The track are all very long and open – three of the four are past the ten minute mark – and Stewart's guitar often provides this rhythmic comping while Tubby solos – creating blocks of chromatic sound that make for a wonderful counterpart to the sharper, soulful lines from Hayes as he creates with the sort of non-stop energy we love in his live performances. The rest of the group includes Kenny Baldock on bass and Spike Wells on drums – and titles include "The Syndicate", "Gingerbread Boy", "The Inner Splurge", and "The Gentle Rain". Weldon IrvineWeldon & The Kats ... LP
Nodlew/P-Vine (Japan), 1968/1980s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 36.99
Rare work from Weldon Irvine – a selection of tracks recorded as private studio outings, reissued briefly by Luv N Haight in the early 90s, and then only on vinyl! The style here is much more jazz-based than some of Irvine's soul recordings – a mode that's often all instrumental, and which features Weldon playing more acoustic piano than on his 70s fusion classics – but usually mixed in with sweet electric elements, too – which creates this wonderfully righteous balance in the music! The whole thing's very soulful, with plenty of undercurrents of the RCA years – and guest players include Steve Grossman on tenor, Marcus Miller on bass, Tom Browne on trumpet, and Bobby Broom on guitar – the latter 3 of which all worked with Weldon at GRP, making us guess that some of these 80s sides were intended for release on that label. Titles include "Kundabuffer", "Music Is The Key", "Mr PC", "We Can Try Again", and "Blues For Spike". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby WellinsWhat Was Happening (Jubilation/Dreams Are Free/bonus tracks) ... CD
Vortex/Jazz In Britain (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 2CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Overlooked work from British saxophonist Bobby Wellins – a really great 70s player who picked up all of the more freethinking ideas on the scene at the start of the decade, but then brought them strongly back to the world of jazz! The set features two rare albums from Wellins – Jubilation and Dreams Are Free – and mixes them here with unreleased material from the same period, all handled by a tight group that features Wellins on tenor, Adrian Kendon on bass, Spike Wells on drums, and Pete Jacobson on piano, electric piano, and organ! There's a modal groove on most of the numbers – more relaxed than in a spiritual jazz mode, but still very much there in spirit – and the keyboard work of Jacobson is wonderful, and really shapes the sound with these long lines that seem to unlock even more currents in Wellins horn. Titles include "Conundrums", "Ba Loos", "What Is The Truth", "Aura", "Jubilation", "Spider", "Love Dance", and "Dreams Are Free". CD

VariousMarch Of The Flower Children – The American Sounds Of 1967 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $28.99 33.99
That slightly creepy photo on the cover makes the kids look a bit more like cult members than the kind of sunny, happy flower children you might normally expect – and that's actually part of the quality of the package, too – as the set really gets at all the wonderful tensions taking place in American music in 1967 – a time of great freedom and optimism, but one with an undercurrent of darkness as well! The set really dives deeply into the crucial year of 1967, and goes way past the oldies and radio hits that most people associate with the musical moment – to bring together all sorts of cool cuts that often were only trading hands with the deeper chapters of the underground, mixed with a few other tracks from artists who got more play at the time, but were also changing the system from within! As with other Grapefruit collections, the notes and presentation are as great as the song choices – and the set features 85 titles in all, with work from The Balloon Farm, Gates Of Eden, Zodiac, Vanilla Fudge, Red Crayola, Lemon Drops, Cyrkle, Peppermint Trolley Company, Tim Rose, Spike Drivers, Blues Magoos, Sound Barrier, Grateful Dead, Thursdays Children, The ID, Zakary Thaks, Velvet Underground, Clear Light, Critters, Sagittarius, Jim & Jean, Sonny, Blue Things, Morning Dew, and many others! Vintage work from Mississippi John Hurt, but somehow amazingly clear and crisp in this classic LP presentation! There's no vocals at all, and the proceedings are nice and lean – grounded by funky drums and superb work on bass – which really lets the keys and vibes do some especially nice things – adding in tones and colors you're not likely to find on other funky records of this type, and which are almost more the stuff of larger arrangements – yet winnowed down here to a cool lean groove! Ace (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection, and one that's got a very special focus – an imaginary soundtrack for the record-breaking British summer of 1976 – a searingly hot time that really pushed the nation to the brink! Bob Stanley's given us some great collections on Ace Records before – often with Pete Wiggs, or as Saint Etienne – and this set continues the very special vibe of those sets, by bringing together cuts that we never would have thought would work so well otherwise – a sublime mix of soul, rock, and pop – all glowing together with the warm vibe of the summer of 1976! Titles include "I'm Mandy Fly Me" by 10CC, "Walking So Free" by Spike Janson, "Sugar Shuffle" by Lynsey DePaul, "Liquid Sunshine" by John Cameron, "Not On The Outside" by Sylvia, "You Are My Love" by Liverpool Express, "You're The Song" by Hollywood Freeway, "Discover Me" by David Ruffin, "Stoned Out" by Simon Park, "Montreal City" by Azimuth, "Stay With Me" by Blue Mink, "Music" by Carmen McRae, "Rock N Roll Star" by Barclay James Harvest, "Fallin In Love" by Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds, "Inspiration Information" by Shuggie Otis, and "Miss My Love Today" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. A lot more brash and bold than you might guess from the title – not just sleepy seduction music, but a batch of really dynamic tunes that will really push the limits of your hi-fi! Most numbers here are instrumental, although some of them have some occasional vocal refrains in the mix – and most have rhythms that are slinky and seductive – never too over the top, but filled with jazzy flourishes and some compelling instrumental moments – so much so that you'll be fine in your pad on your own, even without a girl! Titles include "Like Young" by Dave Pell, "Playboy's Penthouse" by Cy Coleman, "Shangri La" by Spike Jones, "A Shot In The Dark" by Jimmie Haskell, "Melancholy Sounds" by King Curtis, "Night Train" by Alvin Rey, "The Beast" by Milt Buckner, "Cool" by Lou Busch, "Sexe" by Line Renaud, "Caravan" by John Buzon Trio, "Spring Sprang Sprung" by Jack Fascinato, and "Theme From Our Man Flint" by Elliot Fischer. Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Early pre-Blue Note hardbop by Jackie McLean – and one of the few recordings to feature his sextet with Ray Draper! Draper was a real legend in late 50s jazz – a tuba (?) player, believe it or not, with a sound that was dark, brooding, and very modern – very unlike you'd expect from the instrument. This album has the same rich quality as the session Draper recorded with Coltrane in the same period – and it also features 2 of his amazing compositions, "Filide" and "Two Sons". As for the rest of the group, Webster Young plays coronet, Gil Coggins plays piano, and George Tucker's on drums – and other titles include "Millie's Pad", "Tune Up", and "What Good Am I Without You". An ultra-hip set from bassist Tyler Mitchell – a player who doesn't often record as a leader, but really makes his mark with this live performance from Smalls! Mitchell's group here is a great one – a really cohesive quintet with Josh Evans on trumpet, Abraham Burton on tenor, Spike Wilner on piano, and Eric McPherson on drums – all players who come together on the album's original compositions, and who have the inventiveness to keep things spontaneous and flowing on the very long tracks – all tunes that go well past a dozen or more minutes in length. Wilner's especially nice – bold, yet sensitive – and a great bridge between the leader and hornmen. Motown, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
The classic soundtrack to Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing – lead, of course, by Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" – and beyond that is a pretty wonderful, and not always as intense cross-section of some of the finer urban soul and New Jack Swing, circa '89, breezy vocal-centric R&B, a touch of Latin and Afro-Carribbean pop. The Bed-Stuy melting pot bubbles over to tragic consequences in the film, but the diverse soundtrack is plenty harmonious, and sounds fresh to this day. Includes "My Fantasy" by Teddy Riley featuring Guy, "Never Explain Love" by Al Jarreau, "Party Hearty" by EU, "Tu Y Yo" by Ruben Blades, "Can't Stand It" by Steel Pulse and "Don't Shoot Me" by Take 6. Capitol, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An ultra-cool set that focuses on one of our favorite easy genres ever – crime jazz! Crime jazz first came to light at the end of the 50s, as Mancini, Morrow, and others penned some incredible music for TV detective shows – tight, jazz-based tunes that really moved past the flowery style of orchestrations that had often been used in the movies and on other crime programs. The crime jazz mode was an instant hit with listeners, and many tunes climbed up the charts – and spawned countless albums of music in the mode. This set brings together 18 tracks from the 50s and 60s – including titles from a wide variety of sources inspired by the crime jazz sound, including a few more famous artists doing their take on the style! Titles include "The Untouchables" by Nelson Riddle, "Dragnet/Room 43" by Ray Anthony, "Thinking Of Baby" by Elmer Bernstein, "I Spy" by Earl Hagen, "Walk On The Wild Side" by Si Zentner, "The Silencers" by Vikki Carr, "Music To Be Murdered By" by Jeff Alexander with Alfred Hitchcock, "Harlem Nocturne" by Spike Jones, and "Mission Impossible" by Billy May. Gearbox (UK), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD
