Every track here is a gem – definitely the "smash" promised in the title, as the record's filled with Hendrix treasures that include "Purple Haze", "Fire", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Stone Free", "Crosstown Traffic", "All Along The Watchtower", "Red House", "Foxy Lady", and "Hey Joe". James BrownGrits & Soul ... LP
Smash, 1964. Very Good+ ... $39.99
One of the grooviest of the James Brown instrumental albums recorded for Smash. Unlike some of the other weaker albums on Smash, this one's got a great batch of material, most of which are originals, and not weak covers of pop tunes. Plus, the tracks are longer than usual, which gives the band a lot of time to stretch out and get really groovy. Tracks include "Grits", "There", "Wee Wee", and "Mister Hip". Very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo red label pressing with deep groove – a nice copy!)

James BrownHandful Of Soul ... LP
Smash, 1966. Very Good+ ... $29.99
One of the best of Brother James' instrumental records for Smash, and a record that has him out front, wailing at the organ. While James has never been one of the true virtuosos of the instrument, he plays with a sense of style and adventure that make his best LPs sing with energy. This one's got a lot of nice original cuts, including "Hot Mix", "Oh! Henry", "Get Loose", and "The King". Nice grooves, and a very solid backing by Nat Jones and the James Brown Band. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light wear, and a small name in pen.)

Renaldo DominoI'm Hip To Your Game/You Don't Love Me No More ... 7-inch
Smash, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $34.99
Sweet sweet soul from Chicago's unsung genius! "Hip To Your Game" is a wonderful blend of strings and falsetto vocals – slowly unfolding with a soft magic that makes us wonder why Renaldo wasn't one of the biggest singers of his time. "You Don't Love Me" is more upbeat, bringing Renaldo's vocals a bit deeper – very much in the best loping Chi-soul mode of the 60s – with a really great little groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(White label promo. Vinyl has some marks that click a bit at the beginning of each side.)

✨✧ Walker BrothersSun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore ... LP
Smash, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal album from the mighty Walker Brothers – the group that featured the young Scott Walker before he leapt out onto his legendary solo career! The style here is a bit different than Scott's solo work – or maybe like his first two albums, a bit – a mix of Brill Building pop and soul influences, the latter of which really make the music great – as Scott, Gary, and John Walker (not related – not even their real names!) work with some great American tunes from both sides of the fence, and really make magic – thanks to top-shelf production that echoes a Phil Spector mode, and which cements the mix of soul and pop at a level that made them huge in the UK beat scene of the 60s. Titles include the classic "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", plus "Everything's Gonna Be All Right", "Don't Fight It", "Take It Like A Man", "I Need You", "My Love Is Growing", "Young Man Cried", "People Get Ready", and "After The Lights Go Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ PrinceAround The World In A Day ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
A mad bit of soul psychedelia from Prince – a record that sounds better and better over the years, and which stands out from most of his 80s work thanks to some really unique production and songwriting! After Purple Rain, Prince did anything but wince in the face of living up to such a massive crossover smash – and if Around The World didn't move nearly as many units, it stands pretty tall these days. A mix of Revolution pop funk & soul, with a more swirling, self consciously psychedelic pop. Titles include the hit "Raspberry Beret", "Paisley Park" (with melody so strong, no wonder Prince held onto the name for other ventures) plus "Around The World In A Day", "America", "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Condition Of The Heart". LP, Vinyl record album
(Fold-over portion is intact. Cover has light wear.)

One of the rare RCA sides from Charlie Rich – great work that echoes his time at Smash, and points the way towards the early Epic years – with titles that include "Big Boss Man", "Big Jack", "She Loved Everybody But Me", "Are You Still My Baby", "Nice N Easy", "Why Oh Why", and "Let Me Go My Merry Way". Mose AllisonHello There Universe ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... $5.99
One of Mose's best albums for Atlantic – an ambitious session that features larger arrangements backing him up, making for a much fuller sound than on other records! The album includes a greatly grooving version of "Wild Man On The Loose" – done with this cool sneaky organ – and lots of the other tracks feature strong horn parts that flesh out the sound, and give a nice edge to Mose's vocals. Other titles include "On The Run", "Somebody Gotta Move", "No Exit", "I'm Smashed", and "Hello There Universe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a name in marker on both sides.)

VariousThis Ain't Chicago – The Underground Sound Of UK House & Acid 1987 to 1991 ... LP
Strut (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
This ain't Chicago, but the sound here owes plenty to the Windy City as well – as the collection documents an amazing criss-crossing of cultural modes that occurred when early UK house musicians took the sound of the underground into the bigger British club scene! In a way, this music's a third chapter in a journey that began when the post-disco American underground were digging the styles of the British electronic generation – then began to craft their own music with early house productions from Chicago and Detroit. These rose in such popularity with UK listeners, that by the end of the 80s, the grooves reversed themselves, and flowed back over the Atlantic – inspiring musicians like these to take the best elements of American house music, particularly Chicago acid, and push it even further into something new! And while the generation yielded plenty of lame tracks and crossover pop, this set shows the real deal – those excellent initial singles that made digging UK singles almost as great as US ones, at least for a brief while. 2LP package features 10 titles that include "Take Me High (mansion mix)" by Colm III, "Show Me What You Got (acid mix part 1)" by SLF, "Jealousy & Lies" by Julian Jonah, "Where's The Love Gone (rmx)" by Julie Stapleton, "Safety Zone" by Exocet, "Pressure Dub" by Ability II, "1666 (pyro-maniac mix)" by MD Emm, "Free To Be" by Window Smashers, "Twin Tub" by Return Of The Living Acid, and "Crashing" by Baby Ford. LP, Vinyl record album
