✨✧ George Wein & The Newport All StarsJazz In Paris – Midnight Concert At The Olympia ... CD
Smash/Universal (France), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Parisian outing from pianist George Wein – working here with a hip group of all-stars who include Ruby Braff on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Pee Wee Russell on clarinet – all in a trad swinging mode that recalls their famous work at the Newport Jazz Festival! The format is similar to a few other albums that Wein recorded under this name, but the setting's a bit more open and relaxed – not nearly as hokey or cliched, and very much an illustration that the best elements of trad jazz were given some new space to express themselves at the end of the 50s. Many tunes are somewhat laidback, with very well-recorded, well-voiced solos that showcase the players at the height of their creativity. Titles include "Blue & Sentimental", "Sugar", "I've Found A New Baby", "Blues Pour Commencer", and "Lover Come Back To Me". CD

Toni BraxtonSecrets ... CD
LaFace, 1996. Used ... $2.99
The second smash hit record in a row by Toni Braxton, and one of biggest and best of the mid 90s – the secret was out by this point to say the least! If the pressure was high to match the sales and creative strengths of the self-titled solo debut, Toni, composer/producer Babyface and producer LA Reid rise to the challenge with unforgettable songcraft and a built-to-last production aesthetic, carried to the heavens by Toni's voice. She's at her peak here, bringing a soulful resonance and all around depth to every note, whether it's on a chart ready pop soul confection, or a richly emotional ballad. Perhaps Toni's biggest moment as a superstar, but she personifies realness throughout! Includes "Come On Over Here", "You're Making Me High", "There's No Me Without You", the eternal "Un-Break My Heart", "Talking In His Sleep", "I Don't Want To", "Let It Flow", "In The Late Of Night" and more. ✨✧ Gotan ProjectLunatico ... CD
XL, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Gotan Project have waited 5 years to follow up their international smash debut – but hearing the set, it's clearly been worth the wait – as the group have expanded into wide new realms of sound! It would have been easy for Gotan to quickly churn out another batch of nuevo tango work as before – but here, they're really complicating things up a fair bit – bringing in some acoustic touches from Calexico, adding in strings recorded in Buenos Aires, spoken words from Jimi Santos, and vocals from Cristina Vilallonga – yet somehow making all of these elements work together beautifully! The vibe here is much deeper and darker than before – still heavily tango-styled with a bit of electronics, but moving past the simpler sound the Starbucks generation has embraced so strongly. Titles include "Lunatico", "Mi Confession", "Domingo", "Paris Texas", "Criminal", "Arrabal", "Celos", "Diferente", and "Notas". CD

Mose AllisonHello There Universe ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1970. Used ... $4.99
One of Mose's best albums for Atlantic – an ambitious session that features larger arrangements backing him up, making for a much fuller sound than on other records! The album includes a greatly grooving version of "Wild Man On The Loose" – done with this cool sneaky organ – and lots of the other tracks feature strong horn parts that flesh out the sound, and give a nice edge to Mose's vocals. Other titles include "On The Run", "Somebody Gotta Move", "No Exit", "I'm Smashed", and "Hello There Universe". CD
Also available Hello There Universe ... LP 5.99
