Brilliant work from the always- great Alain Goraguer – a musician who started out in jazz, then did classic arrangements for Serge Gainsbourg, and went on to some killer soundtrack material too! That's what you'll hear, in a package that brings together lost and un-reissued work from Goraguer – starting with his beautiful sounds for the film L'Affaire Dominici – music that often has a balance of acoustic and electric instrumentation that reminds us of Francois De Roubaix, especially in the way that Goraguer can space out the melodies and rhythms, but also get funky too. The set features two great tracks from Au Dela De La Peur – with a sinister funk quality that reminds us of his best work for Serge Gainsbourg – followed by three final tracks from Musiques Legeres, which have this gentle, watery quality that's really beautiful! A record with a much harder edge than you'd expect from the cover – not the ancient vibe of a medieval crusade, or the religiosity in the title – and instead this searing entry to the hard rock underground at the time! The group have a really heavy Black Sabbath sort of sound – with excellent lead guitars from Bob Cooke, and a sinister sound that has the grooves really dipping down into the depths, pushed even further by evil-edged vocals from singer Lynden Williams. The album's got the raw power of Sabbath's best work – and the whole thing's a killer record that should have been an instant classic. A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. Heavy bass, tight percussion, and a wonderfully trippy groove – the stunning second album from Cymande, and one of our funk favorites from the 70s! These guys have a sound that's completely unique – a vibe that mixes African and Jamaican influences up in the heady London scene of the early 70s – with results that were years ahead of their time, and which still go onto blow many minds all these years later! The bass alone is worth the price of admission – as dubby as anything from Kingston, but with a tighter focus – one that drives some sinister lines from the vocals, and which gets strong support from lots of lively conga passages. The Revolutionaries are in fantastic formation on this rare dub set for GG's Records – serving up all sorts of deep, dark rhythms that get wonderfully transformed by the heady production from Alvin Ranglin! Ranglin's a real master of understatement here – and the album's definitely got the lean, sinister vibe of some of the best indie sets from the Jamaican underground – work that hardly saw much circulation at the time, and the record has all sorts of wonderful instrumental touches throughout – including very cool trombone from Vin Gordon, organ from Ansel Collins, and guitar from Bo Peep. Maybe our favorite Beatles album ever – a key set that bridges the catchiness of the early years and the sharper ideas of later albums – with a slightly sinister undercurrent that really keeps things fresh! Drummer Akira Ishikawa was easily one of the hippest cats on the Japanese scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a player and leader with a great ear for American funk and soul changes of the time, most of which he brought into play on a record like this! The album's definitely got the soul and rock promised in the title, but also plenty of jazz too – as some of the solos go nicely outside, in weird offbeat ways that nicely contrast with the tighter grooves in the rhythm – creating a nice sense of tension that really makes this record stand out from the pack! There's a really sinister undercurrent here – odd edges and weird tones on piano, guitar, and saxophone – all amidst some strongly soulful grooves from the rest of the group. A super-huge moment for Ozzy Osbourne – as he furthers his horror movie image, and also adds a bit more synth into the mix – maybe in a way that echoes some of the horror film soundtrack styles of the time! There's still plenty of heavy guitar on the record from Jake E Lee, and Ozzy continues to send his vocals over the top – maybe a bit more catchy with the keyboards, but still with that arch-sinister style he really let loose after leaving Sabbath! A massive treasure from the P-Funk empire – an unreleased George Clinton project during his glory days on Westbound Records! The group features Gary Shider in the lead on vocals – with support from other US Music members, and a fair bit of the current Funkadelic lineup too – musicians who played on the legendary America Eats Its Young sessions, recorded at the same time as this one! The sound is incredibly sinister – even more tripped-out, fuzzy, and psychedelic than most regular Funkadelic work – with lots of dark moments, and basslines that are sure to blast out your speakers – courtesy of Cordell Mosson. Other group members chime in with Shider, too – in the best Clinton-directed style of the time – and the whole thing has a massive ensemble feel that's wonderful, and right up there with the well known Westbound P-Funk recordings of the time. Why this one wasn't released is a real mystery to us – but we're mighty thankful to finally have it out! A really fantastic album from Prince – recorded in 2010, and unreleased at the time – but clearly one of the greatest things he gave us in the final decade of his life! This isn't uncooked demo material, or under-thought studio tracks – and instead, the whole thing is a fully-formed record with a message that really comes through in the title – more political Prince than usual, with an eye for our nation that rivals Sign O The Times! It may be that back when Prince recorded the set, the time wasn't right for the message – but these tracks definitely hit home now – and are often delivered in this sinister slow funk mode that really fits the lyrics – almost as if Prince were trying to give the world his version of a righteous 70s album on Curtom Records. The genius first album from Gary Numan and Tubeway Army – a set that stripped down all sorts of influences from the early part of the 70s, filtered them through a punkish sort of energy, and came up with a great antidote to some of the more overblown projects from years before! There's plenty to love here if you love Bowie in Berlin, or the offbeat spirit of Roxy Music – yet the record's far more than just a second chapter to that generation – as Numan and the group have a way of sounding colder and more sinister, and really helping give birth to a spirit that so many others would steal in years to come! If you only know Numan's later solo work, you'll be nicely surprised here by the sharper edge and sometimes heavier guitar – an instrument played along with keyboards by Numan, with help from Jess Lidyard on drums and Paul Gardiner on bass.
