SingersUnlimited & Art Van Damme —
Invitation ... CD MPS/Edel (Germany), 1973. Used ...

One of the coolest albums ever cut by the SingersUnlimited – thanks to great instrumentation from the mighty Art Van Damme! Art plays accordion – in a way that works perfectly with the banks of sound and sweetness we love from the group – an instrument whose own breathy tones turns out to be a perfect accompaniment for their harmonies, especially in the way it sets a very melancholy mood! Other instrumentation is great too – relatively spare use of the guitar of Sigi Schwab, plus vibes from Heribert Thusek, bass from Eberhard Weber, and drums from Charly Antolini – and titles include a really sublime version of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave", plus "Violets For Your Furs", "Cherry", "Spring Is Here", "Ecstasy", "We Could Be Flying", and "Invitation". CD
The first-ever album from the legendary Hi-Lo's – a landmark indie debut that went onto transform the sound of vocal harmony in the 20th century! The record's got a subtle brilliance that's hard to catch at first – a way of putting together the tunes that's often only slightly different than some of the group's contemporaries, but which already shows the rich talents that leader Gene Puerling would bring to later vocal experiments with SingersUnlimited in the 70s. As with most of the group's famous records, backings here are by Frank Comstock – perfectly poised on the gentle tunes, and nicely jazzy on the more swinging ones! Titles include "June in January", "Little White Lies", "I Don't Want to Cry Anymore", "She's Funny that Way", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Island of Desire", "You Brought a New Kind Of Love", "Fools Rush In", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Where Are You", and "You Can't Hardly Get Them No More". Ritz —
Ritz ... CD Denon (Japan), 1987. Used ...

A later take on the vocalese style first pioneered by Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – sung by a male/female quartet with a wonderfully fluid feel! The group's not nearly as kitschy as you might guess from their name or the Hirshfield cartoon on the cover – and have the warmth of SingersUnlimited mixed with some of the more dynamic modes of the LHR group – getting support here only from a piano trio, plus a few additional instruments on some tunes. Titles include "All The Things You Are", "Walkin", "Summer Burn", "It Never Entered My Mind", "Invitation", "The Golden Rule", and "A Child Is Born". CD
