Shirley HornSwingin Shirley Horn – Jazz Club ... CD
Jazzclub (Germany), 1960s/1990s. Used ... $2.99
Shirley Horn's definitely swinging here – in a set of tracks that features groovy numbers from two different points in her career! Some of the work on the set is from her early 60s years on Mercury and ABC Records – and the other half's from that great stretch in the 90s when her career had really been revived, thanks to a host of excellent recordings for Verve! The mix of material is really great, and shows a wider range of Horn's talents than you'll normally find on other collections – mixing 60s swingers in with some more mature numbers from the later years. Titles include "Big City", "The Great City", "Mack The Knife", "That's No Joke", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "Peel Me A Grape", "How Am I To Know", "Come Dance With Me", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". ✨✧ Shirley HornLive At The Monterey Jazz Festival 1994 ... CD
Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Shirley Horn caught right at the height of her great revival years in the 90s – a time when she was arguably even more expressive and deeply soulful than before! Like most of Horn's best recordings of the time, this live date features a trio – with Shirley herself on piano, Charles Ables on bass, and Steve Williams on drums – all working in warmly swinging territory that's totally great! Horn's vocals are wonderful throughout – very well-recorded, despite the festival setting – and there's an intimacy and sense of personality to the record that you'll be hard pressed to find in some of the other Monterey live dates. Titles include "Blues For Big Scotia", "A Song For You", "How Am I To Know", "Foolin Myself", "The Look Of Love", "Nice N Easy", and the sublime "LA Breakdown". CD

✨✧ Shirley HornLoads Of Love/Shirley Horn With Horns ... CD
Mercury, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 early albums by the great Shirley Horn – back to back on one CD! On Loads Of Love, Shirley sings some somber ballads over large orchestrations by Jimmy Jones – in a mode that's different from recent work, but which also shows that she's a great singer with a really sensitive style. The groove's not as open as on some of her small combo recordings, but that also brings out a side of Shirley that you don't always hear on record – a committed, honest, slightly sad style that's quite striking, considering that this was one of Shirley's first albums. Titles include "That's No Joke", "Love For Sale", "Ten Cents A Dance", "Who Am I?", "Only The Lonely", and "Wild Is Love". Horn With Horns is hip stuff from Shirley – very mature and swinging jazz, despite any hokiness you might expect from the "with horns" tag. Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, Thad Jones, and Billy Byers – and the set list features some good current numbers, and a bunch of standards, all redone nicely in a 60s sophistijazz style. Tracks include "Wee Small Hours", "That Old Black Magic", "The Great City", "On The Street Where You Live", and "Let Me Love You". CD

✨✧ Shirley HornMay The Music Never End ... CD
Verve, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stunning – and some of the best work we've ever heard from Shirley Horn! We know, we know – you've seen a bit too much of her in the jazz racks of late – but don't let that stop you from picking up this album, because it's amazing! Shirley returns to the spare, subtle simplicity of older albums like Travelin Light and Where Are You Going – working in a trio format that's so stripped down, so mellow, most of the work on the set is really just done by Shirley's vocals. And as when Shirley's singing at her best, the album is filled with tunes that you might have heard before – but which take on a whole new life and imagination in Shirley's hands. For some reason, she seems to find words in these songs we've never heard before – putting them over with new meanings, new emotions, and a sound that's incredibly sublime! Ahmad Jamal and Roy Hargrove make some slight guest appearances on the set, but forget about them – because the real magic is Shirley, sounding greater here than ever! Titles include "Forget Me", "Maybe September", "Everything Must Change", "May The Music Never End", "Take Love Easy", and "Watch What Happens". CD
(Sealed copy! Cutout hole through traycard and rear case.)

Nice album recorded during a time when Shirley Horn's talents were lesser-known to the world than in her current revival. The set's got Shirley playing piano and singing in a very sweet trio with Buster Williams and Billy Hart. The material's mostly standards, but as usual, Shirley manages to get a whole new level of emotion and feeling out of them! ✨✧ Shirley HornShirley Horn Live At The Four Queens ... CD
Resonance, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Unissued live work from the great Shirley Horn – recorded in Las Vegas right before her big comeback recordings of the 90s – at a time when Shirley was hardly getting a chance to make an album! That lack of attention hardly matters to Horn, though – as she faces this performance with all of the class, charm, and undeniable soul of her bigger label material – both singing and playing piano with that unique sense of phrasing that made her a standout from the 60s onward – easily one of the coolest jazz talents of her generation – and an artist that we'd rank up there with Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, and a rare few others. The album's got a few especially nice long tracks – which have Shirley stretching out with great long solos on piano, too – in a trio that features Charles Ables on bass and Steve Williams on drums. Titles include "Meditation", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Hi Fly", "Just For A Thrill", "Blues For Big Scotia", "Lover Man", and "Isn't It Romantic". CD

✨✧ Shirley HornSoftly ... CD
Audiophile, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from the great Shirley Horn – a record from a time right before she burst into bigger fame, thanks to Verve Records – but was still working strongly in the underground, cutting fantastic records like this! Horn's got this mature, thoughtful approach that makes her way more than just another jazz singer – this well-developed mixture of sophistication and swing that's got the same very personal level of Betty Carter at this point – even though Shirley's a completely different singer – with the lady herself playing piano, alongside bass from Charles Ables and drums from Steve Williams. Titles include a great version of "Summer" (aka "Estate") – plus "Since I Fell For You", "You're My Thrill", "Dindi", "Softly As I Leave You", "Forget Me", and "I Watch You Sleep". CD

✨✧ Shirley HornTravelin' Light/Horn Of Plenty ... CD
ABC/Universal (Germany), 1963/1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two excellent early albums from Shirley Horn – back to back on a single CD! Travelin Light is one of the greatest jazz vocal albums of the 60s, and probably the greatest album ever by Shirley Horn! The session's got a beautiful lively sound, with extremely interesting arrangements by Johnny Pate, and a flute/piano/guitar sound that works perfectly with Shirley's lovely voice. The material is a great mix of lesser-known songs, sung with a maturity and honesty that will make your heart break. We love this one way better than any of Shirley's recent albums, and we can't recommend it highly enough! Titles include "Sunday In New York", "Yes, I Know When I've Had It", "Someone You've Loved", "I Could Have Told You", "Travelin Light", and "Don't Be On The Outside". Horn Of Plenty is hip stuff from Shirley Horn – very mature and swinging jazz! The set features the sharp early vocals of Shirley Horn nicely set up with some larger backings – hip arrangements handled by Quincy Jones, Thad Jones, and Billy Byers – with all the groovy 60s punch you can imagine from a lineup like that! And although Horn later became well known for some gentler, mellower cuts, we're huge fans of her singing like this – which has a righteous power that really tops some of the vocalists from the previous generation. Titles include "Wee Small Hours", "That Old Black Magic", "The Great City", "On The Street Where You Live", and "Let Me Love You". CD

Mark MurphyBeautiful Friendship – Remembering Shirley Horn (Japanese edition) ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99 About April 15, 2024 (delayed)
Tremendous work from the great Mark Murphy – a great reminder that he's still one of the greatest jazz vocalists to come our way in the past 50 years! The short set's a loving tribute to the late Shirley Horn – delivered by Mark in some of his most personal, poetic modes in years – with backing from a trio that features Alex Minasian on piano and Curtis Lundy on bass – plus guest trumpet from Til Bronner on two of the album's tracks! Bronner's trumpet rings out warmly alongside Murphy's vocals – which have the same edge we've loved for so many years. The pairing is one that would definitely make Shirley Horn smile – and titles include "A Beautiful Friendship", "Get Out Of Town", "Here's To Life", and "But Beautiful". CD

Eddie Lockjaw DavisEddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook – Vol 1 ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1958. Used ... $7.99
A record that's virtually the blueprint for the sound of Hammond organ and tenor sax in soul jazz– the first of Eddie Lockjaw Davis' great run of cookbook albums for Prestige! The record features Lockjaw's gutsy tenor in a group alongside Jerome Richardson's lighter flute – both dancing wonderfully together over organ lines from a young Shirley Scott – playing here with a style that's a bit earthier and more bluesy than some of her later work. Rhythm is by George Duviver on bass and Arthur Edgehill on drums – and tracks include the classic 12 minute jammer "In The Kitchen", plus shorter tracks "Three Deuces", "The Chef", and "Have Horn, Will Blow". CD features bonus track "Avalon". CD

Abbey LincolnAbbey Lincoln's Affair – A Story Of A Girl In Love ... CD
Liberty (Japan), 1956. Used ... $6.99
One of the strangest things about Abbey Lincoln's career is the fact that, despite her hip affiliations with the left end of the jazz spectrum, she's actually been slotted into a fair number of straighter projects, not only in music, but in film as well. This album's a perfect example of that – and may well be the reason for Abbey's later leanings towards the left – as here, in her debut LP, she comes off as a dreamy girl singer, recorded by Liberty almost in a mode that's similar to Julie London or some of their other gal stars – with complicated backings from Benny Carter and Marty Paich. The record is lacking the stark captivating quality of Abbey's later records, but it does have a certain kind of charm – especially as the love themes in the set are all-adult, at a mature level that you'd really only hear from a rare few other singers, like Shirley Horn or Lorez Alexandria. Titles include "Two Cigarettes In The Dark", "Take Me In Your Arms", "No More", "Affair", "This Can't Be Love", "I Wake Up Smiling", and "Love Walked In". CD

Stuff SmithCat On A Hot Fiddle ... CD
Verve, 1959. Used ... $6.99
A late 50s Verve session by Stuff Smith – one in which the jazz violinist does a wonderful job shaking off his often quite hammy persona for a strong, straight up set of standards and well-known bop era cuts! He's got a great crew for these sessions, with the great Shirley Horn on piano on a number of cuts, Red Mitchell on bass, and Harry Saunders on the kit. Stuff does his vocal thing on "Oh, Lady, Be Good" and "Somebody Loves Me", but the by-and-large focus of the set is to shine a light on his skills as a leader. Other tracks include "Undecided", "The Man I Love", "Take The 'A' Train", "'S Wonderful" and more! CD

Stanley TurrentineCommon Touch ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1968. Used ... $14.99 19.99
A really great later Blue Note session from Stanley Turrentine – a small combo set that's almost a return to the format of earlier years! The group's a strong one – and features Shirley Scott on organ, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums – playing in a style that's subtler and more laidback than his work with Lou Donaldson, but which still has a nice funk undercurrent. Stan's horn is in wonderful form on the record – really taking advantage of the longer tracks to open up with a mellow and exploratory tone – and the team of Scott and Ponder especially sounds great next to each other on the album. A very groovy idea! By the time he started working in films, Jones had already had a decade under his belt as one of the hippest arrangers, leaders, and composers in jazz – and the film business really respected those talents, and allowed Quincy to bring some really fresh styles into play – modes that really opened up the vibe of American cinema, and also paved the way for the funky styles of the 70s! Pretty great soundtrack work from Wynton Marsalis – done for a somewhat forgettable film, but featuring a wide array of sounds and styles – all a bit of a break from some of Wynton's stiffer work of the time! There's a definite ear here for New Orleans roots – which echo through the vintage-styled tunes nicely – and some numbers bring in a bit of vocals, either from Shirley Horn or Johnny Adams, which further helps expand the range of tunes. Many numbers are somewhat short – which allows the group to leap out before any cliches might take over – and Wynton's trumpet is augmented by a fair bit of extra horns, including some great clarinet from Alvin Batiste and Michael White. Titles include "Big Trouble In The Easy", "May Be Fact Or Fiction", "Albanians", "Don't Run From Fun", "On The Eve Of Entry", "Mama Leona", and "I Can't Get Started". CD
