That's the great Skip Spence on the cover – formerly of Moby Grape, creator of the classic Oar album, and given very big coverage here in a story that traces his development as a solo act! The issue also looks at the soulful duo Hedge & Donna, the cool prog group Andwella, and France's The Dogs – next to a cool set of 20 questions with the High Llama's Sean O'Hagan, a man who knows more about music than most! Plenty more too, all given the usual Shindig style – features on Mike Taylor, Gospelbeach, Daniel Romano, Danny Kirwan, and Barry Ryan – plus lots of reviews and other short spots too! Magazine

This time around, Yusuf Cat Stevens gets the big cover feature – a great long article that talks about the way he finally arrived with that unique style of his classic albums! There's also a large look at Japanese 70s singer Meiko Kaji, a look at the truth and lies about Nick Drake, and lots more on Alex Harvey, Keb Darge, Neil Young, First Edition, Mapeche, Synanthesia, and the legendary Wicker Man film of the 70s! As always, the look and presentation is great – as vivid as the writing within. Magazine

This issue's cover feature takes a loving look at the once unsung, but increasingly (and rightly!) revered 70s years of Arthur Lee and Love! It's takes a nice look at the soulful hard rock and funk years that might've been met with more acclaim at the time if the trailblazing psych-era masterpieces weren't still finding an audience – and it's full of great photos we've never seen! There's lots of other nice stuff in this issue – including pieces on Tulsa power pop genius Dwight Twilley, the garage, surf and other seedy rock delights of Estrus Records, Barbara Moore, Will Malone and more – plus lots of reviews, the crossword and more. Shindig magazine usually looks at the past, but this time around the past is closer than usual – as they've got a special feature on the best releases of 2023 – although many of them also have to deal with older music! And in true Shindig fashion, Big Star is on the cover – with an exclusive interview that also discusses the tensions that were rising during the creation of their legendary album Radio City! The issue's also got other features – articles on Donovan, Paul Williams, PP Arnold, Plasticland, The Fairies, Chris Farlowe, and others – plus a look at the changing scenes during the 20 key musical years of 1964 to 1984. The freaky side of the late 60s LA scene gets plenty of coverage here – including Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and the legendary Kim Fowley – all presented in the kind of glorious color we always love in a Shindig article! There's also a nice feature on Bob Stanley – a man whose work on the compilation front has taught us about countless great records over the years – plus more on Blues Magoos, The Who, Clydie King, Nicky Hopkins, Barrence Whitfield, and others – all given the mighty nice Shindig spin! The cover feature is a deep dive into the last days of Roy Wood's and Jeff Lynne's The Move and their, well, move to Electric Light Orchestra – who, needless to say, would become of the one of the biggest and most tuneful pop rock behemoths of its time – and where better to find this fascinating musical history than in the pages of the always great Shindig! This issue also has pieces on the Incredible String Band, 80s mod, Matt Berry, Brinsley Schwarz, Chris Stamey, Rodriguez and more – plus the always excellent regular columns, features, rare photos and nice range of reviews! A great dip back into the archives of Shindig magazine – with a limited edition that brings back some of the best interviews and features the publication did in years back – all laid out with new graphics, and often re-edited and expanded as well! Shindig often covers both big names and small from the 60s and 70s – but this issue is all heavy-hitters – with coverage on Frank Zappa, The Monkees, The Who, David Bowie, Small Faces, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Donovan, Captain Beefheart, Mott The Hoople, and others – all presented with loads of great photos and images, and no ads at all! A post-punk band with the wisdom to look to psych era inspiration, laying the groundwork for indie rock to come and all the while getting surprising mainstream success in their heyday – The Teardrop Explodes are the rightful cover feature for this issue of Shindig! This issue has plenty of cool features, items and snapshots of tons of other cool bands from the 60s and 70 and relatively contemporary torch carriers including The Soup Dragons, The Cramps, Edgar Jones, and look at gargage revival 45s, The Creeps, Permanent Clear Light, The Playn Jayn and lots more! ✨✧ Sandie ShawSandie Shaw On Radio & TV 1965 to 1970 ... LP
1960s (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare slice of work from the great Sandie Shaw – material she recorded for broadcasts, at the time she was also serving up her classic material for Pye Records – easily some of the coolest, grooviest Brit female pop of the time! The presentation here is a nice change from the famous singles – in that although there's a fair bit of material penned by Chris Andrews, who gave Sandie some hits, there's also some nice covers of tunes of the time too – done in some straighter readings for BBC Top Gear shows, and given a different spin on some Shindig recordings, and a number of tracks from the Sandie Shaw Supplement program! The set's got 19 tracks in all – and titles include "I'd Be Far Better Off Without You", "Girl Don't Come", "Homeward Bound", "Route 66", "Day Tripper/Ticket To Ride", "Coconut Grove", "Love Letters", and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose". ✨✧ TroyesRainbow Chaser – Complete Recordings 1966 to 1968 ... CD
Cicadelic, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Troyes look plenty young on the cover, but the Michigan quintet can really stand shoulder-to-shoulder with much older garage groups of their generation! The music here is another one of those "what ifs" from the mid 60s American hinterland – a group who were every bit as amazing as some of the Sunset Strip scene, or maybe even some of the trippiest Texas rockers – but who never fully got their due, despite both tremendous instrumental skills, and a really great talent for creating really memorable songs! This double-length set brings these guys into the limelight far too many years to get them on the charts – but at a level that will hopefully give them their due – as evidenced by the strong cover support by both Ugly Things and Shindig. Titles include "The Morning Of The Rain", "I Don't Need You", "The Good Night", "Mari", "I'm Gone", "Jezebel", "Help Me Find Myself", "Rainbow Chaser (unedited version)", "Your Mind Is Showing", "I'm Gone", "Blanket Of My Love", and "Corn Flake". Worth it alone for all the great fuzzy organ! CD

✨✧ Bill DoggettDoggett Beat For Dancing Feet ... LP
King, Late 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Bill's got his groove on right for this set – quite possibly one of the greatest of his early King years, thanks to killer work from Billy Butler on guitar, Shep Shepherd on drums, and the great Clifford Scott on alto and tenor sax! Scott's raspy tone really makes these tunes groove – setting up a nice counterpoint with Doggett's fuller sound on organ, and cutting through the overall sound of the set with a gutsiness that we totally love. Titles include "Soft", "Ding Dong", "Chloe", "Hot Ginger", "King Bee", "Shindig", and "Hammer Head". LP, Vinyl record album
