✨✧ Serge GainsbourgComic Strip ... CD
Philips, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great 20 track compilation that focuses on the pivotal years for Serge Gainsbourg – the time when he was turning his twisted French pop into a sound that would forever be remembered, and become an inspiration for so many of today's musicians. The set's got a few tracks that are on other albums we stock, but it's also got a lot of other groovy stuff that's pretty tough to find, and which was on rare singles, or other hard to find sources. Titles include "Shu Ba Du Ba Loo Ba", "Black & White", "Requiem Pour Un C", "Les Sucettes", "L'Anamour", "Hold Up", "Marilu", "Ford Mustang", and "Docteur Jeckyll Et Monsieur Hyde". Very cool, and with a great set of notes! CD

✨✧ Charlotte GainsbourgIRM ... CD
Because/Warner, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunner from Charlotte Gainsbourg – in keeping with her style of crafting a diverse body of avant pop sounds by working with stellar collaborators – this time with producer/composer Beck, and it's her best to date! A few tunes are sung in French and have a kind of dramatic French pop noir vibe that would made Serge proud, a mix of sweet and sultry, lightness and drama. Others have more of a raw and messed up vibe with heavier percussion and more of a leftfield sound, and still others have kind of a freaky folk funk sound with horns, drums and more. She covers a lot of stylistic terrain with equally successful wins all around. It's the mark of a true talent that Charlotte can invite such hugely impacting collaborators onto her albums – Beck and his stable of amazing studio musicians on this album, and previous collaborators from Jarvis Cocker to Air – yet it's her show all the way. Titles include "Master's Hands", "IRM", "Le Chat Du Cafe Des Artistes", "In The End", "Heaven Can Wait", "Vanities", "Time Of The Assassins", "Trick Pony", "Greenwich Mean Time", "La Collectionneuse" and more. ✨✧ VariousEspresso Espresso ... CD
Deram (UK), 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic compilation of groovy tracks from the 60's, and one that we've had for years, and never tire of playing! The whole thing was put together by the genius Karminsky Brothers, and the tracks are a swirling mix of Latiny, Bossa-y, Groovy, and Now Sound material – including stuff by Serge Gainsbourg, The Gimmicks, Berry Lipman, Wilson Simonal, Ray Rivera, Roberto Delgado, and others! Two of the biggest highlights include Burt Bacharach's rare beautiful track "Something Big", which is worth the price of the CD alone – and Astrud Gilberto's great version of "Happenings". Very long, with 23 killer tracks, and a gorgeous package, too! Expensive, but one of the best things you'll buy this year! CD
(Out of print, sticker remnant on CD label.)

✨✧ VariousTrip – Created By Saint Etienne ... CD
Family/Universal (UK), 1970s/2004. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stellar entry in the Trip series – curated this time by effervescent aural groovers Saint Eteinne! Much like the other compilations in the series, the track list is mined from the deep, rich vaults of Universal and subsidiaries – and it's groovy as can be! The set is pretty heavy with the best 70s major soul, by both the biggest stars and the most under-appreciated talents of the era, plus off-kilter groove that no doubt informs the work of the compilers! A mix of 48 tracks on 2 CDs! Disc one includes "Cannibus" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Last Night Changed It All" by Esther Williams, "(A Case Of) Too Much Love Making" by Gloria Scott, "It's Time To Break Down" by the Supremes, "Deus Irae Psychedelico" by Ennio Morricone, "Shooting Star" by Mamas & The Papas, "Lady Orange Peel" by The Attack, "Breakaway" by Ernie Bush and tons more! Disc 2 includes "Like To Get To Know You" by Spanky & Our Gang, "Free From The City" by Poppy Family, "The Radio Song" by Dillard & Clark, "Can't Find The Time" by Orpheus, "Speak Like A Child" by Tim Hardin, "Dark Is The Bark" by the Left Banke, "A Doll's House" by John Barry and lots more!
