Schema SextetLook Out – Tribute To Basso/Valdambrini ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1999. Used ... $9.99
Great jazzy grooves from this hip Italian combo – a late 90s precursor to the current club jazz scene! The group's got a classic Blue Note sound – mixing up soul jazz and modal grooves with some very tight playing and a strong commitment to a classic sound. The horn players are all great – and include Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet, Gianluca Petrella on trombone, and Rosario Giuliani on alto sax – all great names from the Italian scene. The rhythm section's pretty darn nice, too – with piano from Pietro Lussu – and the tracks have a hard groove that reminds us of classic lines by Art Blakey from the early 60s! The set's a tribute to the classic Italian hard bop combo of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini – and the album includes some of that group's great original compositions, like "Look Out", "Young Man", "Time Was", "Lothar", "Before Ten O'Clock", and "Bob's Buddy". ✨✧ VariousHistory Of Schema – L'Aspetto Maschile – Compiled By Fumio Onodera ... CD
Schema (Japan), Late 1990s/Early 2000s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Massive grooves from Schema Records – a special Japanese-only collection that features some of the best recent work on the label, mixed in with a few key classics from the early days! There's a simple, elegant feel to most of the tracks here – a sound based in older jazz and bossa roots, carried off in a blend of acoustic instrumentation with slight contemporary programs and processing – but never too much to obscure the warmth of the sources! Most titles have a warmth that's undeniable – far more than you might guess from the stark black cover image – and tracks include "Stay In Mood" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "This Is What You Are" by Mario Biondi & High Five Quintet, "Samba Royale" and "Afro Impression" by Paolo Achenza Trio, "Cortante" by Gerardo Frisina, "Missione A Bombay" by Nicola Conte, and "Cinemaroma 3", "Destination Moon", "No Problem", and "Driving" by The Dining Rooms. ✨✧ VariousFez File Volume Uno – A Kaleidoscope Of Modern Sounds ... CD
Schema/Fez (Italy), 2000. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Modern tunes – but with a very classic groovy feel! Of all the Italian efforts to take an older lounge sound and update it for the modern dancefloor, the work of Nicola Conte and the Schema label has been some of the best. This 13 track set offers proof of Conte's genius – and offers up some sparkling groovers all graced with the careful selection you've come to expect from Conte's Fez Studio. Titles include "Meeting With His Majesty" by Theivery Corp, "The Hip Sheik" by The Karminsky Experience, "Funky Bikini" by Ursula 1000, "Arabesque" by Nicola Conte, "Girl On A Mission" by Les Hommes, "Whenever" by Les Gammas, "We Don't Need No Smurfs Here" by Cosmo Vitelli, and "Hi Fi Trumpet" by Stereo Action Unlimited. Very nice – especially if you've enjoyed other Schema modern releases, like Break N Bossa or the Soulstance album! CD

✨✧ Dining RoomsVersioni Particolari 2 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A full length, CD-only package that brings together material scattered over 4 different 12" singles from The Dining Rooms – remixes that sprung up in the wake of their excellent Experiments In Ambient Soul album, handled by a range of talents who really expand the grooves! Many of the cuts here benefit from additional instrumental or vocal touches that change things up considerably – simple elements that work powerful magic on the cuts – and in some cases make them even better than the original album versions! The package is a way better deal than buying all the singles on their own – and it features 13 tracks that include "Forever's Not (Incognito Traveller rmx)", "Milano Calibro 9 (Madrid De Los Austrias mix)", "Afrolicious (Boozoo Bajou rmx)", "Ocean (orig mix)", "White Riot", "World She Made (Yam Who rework)", "Destination Moon (Parov Stelar rmx)", "No Problem (7 Samurai voc mix)", "Experiments In Ambient Soul (Koom.h rework)", and "Thin Ice (Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi rmx)". ✨✧ Charles Hilton BrownOwed To Myself ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A swirling blend of soul, funk, and jazzy grooves – and a super-rare album that we've never seen in the original! Supposedly, backing on the record is by the British Afro-Funk group Assagai – which sounds right to us, because there's a nice rolling conga groove on many of the tracks. Lead vocals are by Charles Hilton Brown, in a nicely raw soul style that reminds us a bit of Otis Redding, and a bit of Mike James Kirkland on some of his early 70s material. The record features vocal covers of a number of soul hits – like "Try A Little Tenderness", "Love Train", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some originals that are even better, like the funky instrumental "GRF", and the tunes "Maddox" and "Tell Me Once Again". Nice and raw, and with a sound hip enough to match the record's cover! CD

✨✧ Franco TonaniNight In Fonorama ... CD
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best of the Schema/Rearward reissues of lost Italian jazz – and a sparkling session that features the work of a young Gato Barbieri, plus trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, pianist Franco D'Andrea, and bassist Giovanni Tommaso. Drummer Franco Tonani leads the session – but the best work is by Ambrosetti, who's got a lot of Miles Davis in his horn at this point, and by D'Andrea, who's warm and lyrical, with none of the self-indulgence of later years. Barbieri lacks the fire of his great recordings, but his tenor's also nice and strong – and he adds some of the rougher edges to the session, in a nice counterpoint to Ambrosetti's sweeter horn. Titles include "Solar", "Vamos", "U Boat", "Drum Ding", and "Hard Mode", done in 2 takes. Great package, with a nice cover, and excellent attention to good sound! CD

✨✧ Mario Biondi & The High Five QuintetHandful Of Soul ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible full length debut from vocalist Mario Biondi – a jazz singer we'd rank right up there with the legendary Mark Murphy – supported here with great backings from the High Five Quintet! The grooves here are in a soaring, tightly-stepping style – very much the best club jazz mode of the contemporary European scene – with all-acoustic instrumentation, and rhythms that move along at a really great dancefloor pace! Mario's vocals are really unique too – with a little rasp that catches slightly, and really brings a timeless quality to his voice – mixing personal feeling into the lively numbers on the album, with an unexpected depth that really makes the album stand out from similar sessions of this type! There's echoes of hip vocal jazz work from years past by artists like The Peddlers, Bobby Cole, or Mark Murphy – and titles include "A Child Runs Free", "No Mercy For Me", "This Is What You Are", "I Can't Keep From Cryin Sometimes", "Rio De Janeiro Blue", "Handful Of Soul", "On A Clear Day", "Never Die", "No Trouble On The Mountain", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Gig". ✨✧ Dining RoomsTre ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
The 3rd album by The Dining Rooms (in case you couldn't guess by the title!) – and the best so far! These guys have really matured from earlier outings – moving into a sophisticated realm of downtempo soundscapes crafted with a great deal of care, and which are put together with a lot more than simple tricks and gimmicks. There's loads of really solid tunes in here – sly numbers that sneak up on you with a subtle approach to the craft, gently burrowing in and taking root – somehow making the album that much more compelling overall. A number of tracks have some wonderfully languid vocals, some male and some female – and these tunes fall nicely next to instrumental numbers with a very evocative approach. Titles include "Anima Per Amarti", "Tunnel", "La Citta Nuda", "Fluxus", "Flamenco Sketches", "Dreamy Smiles", "You", "African Loungesters", and a nice cover of Sun Ra's "Astro Black"! CD

✨✧ Karl Drewo & Francy BolandClap Hands Here Comes Charlie ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Mid 60s/1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent album of groovy jazz from the European scene of the mid 60s – and one that pairs the talents of the great (and nearly forgotten) Austrian tenor player Karl Drewo with the groovy small band of the legendary pianist Francy Boland! Although he hails from Vienna, Drewo's tone is nice and deep, with a heavy cutting tenor sound that's right up there with American giants like Johnny Griffin or Eddie Lockjaw Davis. He's playing here with a tight hardbop septet, fronted by Francy Boland, and featuring a unique 3-piece trombone section for the rhythm parts. Most of the solos are Drewos', and his tenor cuts nice and deep through the arrangements of the band as they groove with a good solid sound. Titles include "JLK", "Young Bucks", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "Limehouse Blues", "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and "Foot Pattin". Nice cover, too! CD

✨✧ VariousBreak N' Bossa – Chapter 8 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2008. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful bossa groovers galore – and one of the greatest entries so far in a series that never lets us down! Years back when Break N Bossa first started, the concept of older Brazilian modes and contemporary dancefloor rhythms was something of a new idea – but over the years, with the help of titles like this, grooves around the globe are a heck of a lot warmer – filled with acoustic elements that take us back not only to the sounds of Rio in the 60s, but also to the European scene that was so inspired by it in later decades. This time around, there's plenty of greatness to chose from – and there's definitely a deepening of the sound as members of the Schema and other scenes represented here have matured over the years. 2CD set features 26 tracks in all, some previously unreleased – including "VSOP (Beatfanatic edit)" by Stockholm Cyclo, "Pinkie (2008 version)" by Beat Out Shrine, "Jurubeba" by Luis Ferri with Adi Souza, "No Mercy For Me (Alessandro Magnanini rework)" by Mario Biondi, "Ocean (Diggin In The Latin mix)" by The Dining Rooms, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Gerardo Frisina with Anna Clementi, "Carioca (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Fragmentorchestra, "Onde Anda O Meu Amor (Fedreghini & Bianchi rmx)" by Rosalia De Souza, "Que Bandeira (Frisina rmx)" by Rosalia De Souza, "Thin Ice (Fedreghini & Bianchi rmx)" by Dining Rooms, "Till The End (Inverse Cinematics rmx)" by The Invisible Session, "Kind Of Latin Rhythm" by Juju Orchestra, "Aromi" by Nick Bernard, and "Non Stop Flight" by Dalindeo. ✨✧ VariousModern Sounds From Italy 2 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A low price, but a really great package – one that's overflowing with some of the best recent work from the mighty Schema Records! If you read these pages at all, you'll know we think that Schema's one of the greatest things going these days – a modern label, but one that's committed to the real jazz grooves of earlier years – the bossa, modal, and soul jazz styles of the 60s and 70s – played in a mixture of real instrumentation and just a bit of dancefloor production, with a sound that's instant classic on nearly every release! This package is a great introduction to the Schema label's genius, and even if you've got some of the tracks here on other releases, the set is a really great way to hear all this music in one place – kind of a "best of the best" that's totally great! Titles include "Bluesanova" by Gerardo Frisina, "Moon Vision" by Soulstance, "I knew The Way" by Invisible Session, "On A Clear Day" by Was A Bee, "Emotional Dancing" by S-Tone, "Stay (In Mood)" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "Afrolicious" by Dining Rooms, "Esquema Da Bossa" by Quintetto X, "Today's Sound" by Intensive Jazz Sextet, and "Dreaming Of The Past" by Rosario Giuliani Quartetto. ✨✧ Andrea BalducciBloom (with bonus track) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful albums we've heard from Schema in many years – a brilliant batch of jazzy tracks from singer Andrea Balducci – served up with backing by a great lineup of players from both the Ricky Tick and Schema worlds! The core approach is jazz, but many of the songs are done with a very soulful approach – a style that's a bit like Mario Biondi, especially given Balducci's use of English throughout, and his raspy vocals – yet more 60s soul in the end, with a unified aesthetic that really holds strong over the course of the album. Players include Jukka Eskola on trumpet, Timo Lassy on tenor, Gaetano Partipilo on alto, and Luca Mannuzta on Fender Rhodes and piano – and titles include "Hurt So Bad", "Spooky", "Within Myself", "Big City", "I Just Dropped In", "Time Will Come", and "The Meaning Of Love". CD features a bonus track – "Hurt So Bad (swing version)". CD

✨✧ Mario BiondiChange Of Scenes (Remixes & Unreleased Tracks) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Breezy, jazzy alternate versions and some strong unreleased tracks from Italian vocalist Mario Biondi – great stuff that offers a fresh take on material from the landmark A Handful Of Soul album and more! Biondi's A Handful Of Soul brilliantly got the ball for Biondi, who's now a bonafide major Italian star, and with good reason. His raspy voice exudes warmth and soulfulness in a way that brings to mind some the most charismatic singers of the past few decades in both jazz and soul, but with a breezy jazzy charm to the arrangements that's the perfect foil! Change Of Seasons doesn't skew away from any of those strengths with the re-worked numbers, just offers a fresh perspective, and the couple of previously unheard numbers are great, too. "A Handful Of Soul (Takin' The Live Mood)", "I'm Her Daddy (Daddy's Point Of View Version)", "This Is What You Are (The Brazilian Rime)", "Slow Hot Wind (Slow Hot Version)", "This Is What You Are (Dim's Hipster Jazz Version by Dimitri From Paris)", "But Not For You (Vocal Demo Version)" and more. ✨✧ Paolo Fedreghini & Marco BianchiSeveral Additional Waves ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A reworked version of one of our favorite albums on Schema Records – a set that has the initial pair revisiting their tunes and twisting them around nicely – in a style that's not really remix, but more re-imagination! The approach is one we can really appreciate – as Paolo and Marco haven't just shopped their fantastic originals out to the first producer who would have them, but have instead kept the bold fire of the original record burning bright, and have simply refocused it to illuminate some new corners of the musical spectrum! As with the original set, the approach here is very much in the best club jazz mode – lots of live instrumentation on piano, Fender Rhodes, saxes, and percussion – plus guest vocals on a good number of the cuts, and a sound that mixes older European jazz echoes with the boldness of the current Schema vision! Titles include "Stay (In Mood)", "Nothing Has To Change (A Jungle Jazz Portrait)", "You Are A Star (Shining Star)", "Oriental Smile (Way Of Life mix)", "Blue Night In Africa (Crossing The Land)", "Onda Espumante (Ironic Wave)", "Please Don't Leave (Funk Wave)", and "Theme Of Solitary Notes (Hopping Notes)". ✨✧ Gerardo FrisinaJoin The Dance ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Modal brilliance from Gerardo Frisina – possibly his greatest album ever, and a set that really shows his true transformation into a jazzman! The set's got a wide range of acoustic jazz instrumentation played live, and features none of the rhythm programs you might get on earlier Frisina records – a shift that has him moving in the same classic jazz space as labelmate Nicola Conte! As with Conte's recent records, there's a warmth and soul here that's undeniable – a feel that wraps up 50s Blue Note, 60s Italian jazz, and 70s MPS with ease – delivering something new and fresh for a younger generation in the process. Core instrumentation includes vibes, piano, tenor, flute, and trombone – and the set features guest vocals by Norma Winstone on one track, and Francesca Sortino on another. All other titles are instrumental, and tunes include "Titoro", "Joy Shout", "Will You Walk A Little Faster", "Tata Somba", "Mille E Una Notte", "High Hat", "Bubbly", and "Another Waltz". CD

High Five QuintetJazz Desire ... CD
Via Veneto (Italy), 2004. Used ... $11.99
A wonderful album of straight ahead jazz – cut by a current combo from Italy, but done with a really classic sound! The style here is a bit like that of the straighter jazz albums on Schema Records – all acoustic, but often highly rhythmic – and focused in styles that explore older Italian modal jazz of the 60s, as well as some of the deeper shadings of the Blue Note scene from years back! The lineup is incredibly strong – with tenor from Daniele Scannapieco, trumpet from Fabrizio Bosso, and piano from Luca Mannutza, whose firm work and bold notes on the keys really give the album a lot of drive and fire! CD features Nicola Conte remixes of the leadoff track "Conversation" – which is actually great enough in its original version by the group – and other tracks include "Wide Green Eyes", "The Driver", "Shade Of Gira", "Dubai", and "Campagna". Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. Used ... $1.99 6.99
Sweet jazzy grooves from this hip Italian duo – Enzo & Gianni Lo Greco, who've also recorded as Quintetto Lo Greco for Schema Records! The sound here is definitely in a Schema groove – lots of jazzy instrumentation on piano, sax, trumpet, and trombone – very much in the best 60s Italian jazz mode, but kicked up just a bit with some rhythms aimed at the dancefloor – never too over the top, and all acoustic all the way through – a club jazz groove that's perfect for anyone who also digs work on labels like DejaVu or Ricky Tick! There's a bit of vocals on the record – sung by guests Alice Ricciardi, Felix, Katharine Ruestow, Roxie Ray, and Dionne Charles – and titles include "Sam Blues", "Feelin Good", "Don't Cry", "Much More", "Broken Rose", "Iperbole", "Please Don't Go", "Sweet Love", "Changes", and "Goodbye". ✨✧ Berardi Jazz ConnectionDo It ... CD
Antibemusic (Italy), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A compelling set of club jazz work from Italy – proof that the nation's scene has plenty to offer besides well known work on Schema Records! We really dug the previous album from Berardi Jazz Connection, and this set is equally great – a sweet-stepping batch of jazz tracks that runs between modal numbers and soulful grooves – served up in a blend of instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, and drums – used in varying ways from track to track, and occasionally augmented by a bit of soulful female vocals. The rhythms here are very much in the best spirit of the contemporary club jazz scene, but are also pretty fresh too – a bit more loosened up from the straight Schema mode, and inflected with a wider range of soulful influences. Titles include "To Brian", "O Prazer De Ser", "The Renegade", "Relax", "FDP", "Play Kid", "Friendly", "Lies", and "Last Night A Cat Stopped Me". CD

✨✧ Aaron Tesser & The New Jazz AffairLookin Ahead ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really great record, despite the somewhat mundane cover image – a set that might be more at home on Schema Records than Irma, given its warm jazzy feel and tight modal grooves! Instrumentation is mostly acoustic, although there's a bit of beats in the rhythms too – and the album sparkles wonderfully with jazzy vocals that light things up beautifully! Aaron Tesser leads the group on tenor sax, but the real star to our ears is vocalist Fabrizio Rispoli – who sings on nearly all the tracks, often with a style that's a bit like that of Mario Biondi – soulful and scatting, with echoes of some of our favorite male jazz singers of the 60s and 70s. Elisabeth Geel sings on a few more tracks, with a slightly sweeter female approach, but one that's still quite strong – and other instrumentation includes alto sax, trumpet, guitar, and plenty of great percussion. Titles include "My Song", "Oko Bop", "Instant Love", "Stella", "Everlasting Rose", "You Me & Jazz", "Feel", "Full Sail Soulship", and "Faraway". CD

Deja Vu (Italy), 1960s/1970s/2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brazil and Italy collide in this sublime assortment of grooves that dips back into the bossa 60s, and brings things up to date with a jazzy dancefloor mode! Half the tracks on the set are older ones, and the other half are newer tunes done in the style of recent work on labels like Schema and Deja Vu – with lots of acoustic and jazz-based elements, but also a bit of an ear for the kind of rhythms that play well on a modern dancefloor! Schema artist Gerardo Frisina put the set together with Italian DJ Paolo Scotti – and the set's got a sublime quality that takes the Schema sound and pushes it into even deeper, richer, and more spontaneous territory! Titles include "Zozoi (Sunaga T rmx)" by Fabio Nobile, "Tema De La Onda" by Nicola Conte meets Aldemaro Romero, "Fly To The Moon" by Fabio Nobile, "Gosta De Ser Como Sou" and "Macumba" by Claudia, "Y Tu Tambien" by Joe Pacheco, "Why O" by Beryl Cunningham, "Baby Chickens" by Gerardo Frisina meets Frank Hernandez, "Descarga Guyaba" by Stefano Mainetti, "Frank & Stein" by Mop Mop, "Afro Blue" by Frank Hernandez, and "Zozoi (Yukihiro Fukutomi rmx)" by Fabio Nobile. ✨✧ LTJ X-PerienceI Don't Want This Groove To Ever End ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album in years from LTJ X-Perience – one of the few funky acts that got things going on the Italian scene in the generation before Schema Records! LTJ are a key link between the Italian sound of the 80s and the later growth into bold new styles – and this album definitely seems to show that mix – as it's very spare, with lots of straightforward grooves that run towards the slower end of the house music spectrum! In fact, the set's almost more house than anything LTJ X-Perience have ever done in the past – a surprising change, but one that almost goes back to the Italian roots that spawned them – yet without too much of the overblown energy of the Italo Disco years. Titles include "Sound Machine", "Time Has Been Now", "I Love You", "Organ Mind", "Black Gold", "Turn Me On", "Always In The Mood", and "I Don't Want This Groove To Ever End". CD

Lights Out (Sweden), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work from this acoustic jazz combo – a set that's got all the classic elements you might expect from its cover, but one that also comes across with some of the fresher jazz styles you'd find on labels like Schema or Ricky Tick! The group are more of a large combo than a full orchestra – a very cool little lineup of trombone, trumpet, sax, flute, piano, bass, drums, and some extra added percussion – which often brings a Latinish undercurrent to some of the album's rhythms – usually with the same great energy you'd find in some of the Clarke/Boland projects of the 60s! The lovely Sofie Nordling sings on a number of cuts – mixing her sweet tones with the group's burning instrumental solos – and the album's an instant classic that we know we'll be digging for years. Titles include "The Runner", "Looking East", "Chapter One", "Swell", "New Friends", "The Search", "The Aggressive", "Sun", "Helsinki", and "Quiet Nights". CD
