Jim SnideroStrings ... CD
Milestone/Savant, 2003. Used ... $9.99
A really fantastic record from reedman Jim Snidero – one that hints at its sound with the "strings" in the title – even though that's just a really tiny part of the overall picture! There's lots more going on here than just a saxophonist with strings – this isn't a laidback ballad session, with Jim blowing familiar tunes in a late nite mode – and instead, his work on alto (and a bit of flute) is very firmly ingrained in the larger charts on the set – strings handled by Laura Seaton, but set to tunes that are almost all originals by Jim himself – and given this great core energy from a quartet that includes Renee Rosnes on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums. Titles include "Slipping Away", "Theme For Ernie", "Forever Gone", "Ventura", and the three-part "River Suite". CD

✨✧ JD AllenQueen City ... CD
Savant, 2021. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really powerful solo album from JD Allen – maybe the first we've ever heard from the tenor saxophonist, and a set that's got a very different vibe than some of his recent outings with groups! Allen recorded the music during the height of lockdown in 2020, at a time when he'd had to step back from performing live and collaborating with others – a moment he used to get back to basics on his instrument, and begin to re-explore all the things that first made being a saxophonist so important to him. There's definitely a sense of isolation and melancholy here – as you might expect – but there's also a feeling of hope and new inspiration, a quiet message from a dark time that's great to have on record. Titles include "Nyla's Sky", "Maude", "OTR", "Vernetta", "Queen City", "Gem & Eye", "Kristian With A K", and "Wildwood Flower". CD

✨✧ JD AllenToys/Die Dreaming ... CD
Savant, 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Boldly brilliant work from tenor saxophonist JD Allen – a player who's always been great, but who seems to be hitting a whole new side of his powers in recent years! The set continues a trio format explored by Allen on a previous date – and like that one, it's got a wonderfully unfettered feel – just the bass of Ian Kenselaar and drums of Nic Cacioppo setting the stage, while JD soars out in these long, soulful solos – filled with energy and power that we might not have imagined a decade ago, making some of his strongest statements as a leader to date! The set includes a fair bit of original titles, but these are just more like sketches for the open energy of the tenor – on titles that include "Die Dreaming", "Red Label", "Toys", "Elegua", and "You're My Thrill". ✨✧ Danny GrissettRemembrance ... CD
Savant, 2017. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Danny Grissett is fantastic here – not just bursting out with so many deft colors and changes on both piano and Fender Rhodes, but also really showing some great strengths as a leader too! One of those strengths is the way he puts together the tunes – especially the more familiar numbers, which feel completely fresh here – augmented by some wonderful work on both soprano and tenor sax from Dayna Stephens, who's almost the co-star of the record – especially when he takes on a tune from the lead! The quartet's balanced out nicely by Bill Stewart on drums and Vicente Archer on bass – all players who really seem to "get" each other in the best way possible. In addition to Grissett's original tunes "Renatus", "Lament For Bobby", "Digital Big Foot", and "A Friend Indeed" – the set also features versions of "Just Enough", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Detour Ahead", and "Gallop's Gallop". ✨✧ Ray MantillaRebirth ... CD
Savant, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ray Mantilla is reborn, after a health crisis almost took him down – but to us, he's also returning to his roots – that rock-solid approach to Latin jazz that's made us love his records so much over the decades! And like the best of those sets, there's a mixture of complex ideas and organic execution going on here – sounds that really push past the obvious, and showcase Ray's sublime understanding of color and tone as much as rhythm – but which feel almost effortless in the hands of Mantilla and his group! Players include Ivan Renta on soprano and tenor, Jorge Castro on bartione and flute, Guido Gonzalez on trumpet, Mike Freeman on vibes, and Edy Martinez on piano and Fender Rhodes – all shimmering nicely on tunes that include "Mia", "Philly Mambo", "Cumbia Jazz Fusion Experimental", "Rebirth Bata Rumba Experimental", "Martinez", "Yuyo", and "Preciosa". ✨✧ Jim SnideroProject K ... CD
Savant, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Project K here is a reference to Korea – a culture that saxophonist Jim Snidero has been engaging with for the past few decades, and which takes a very strong form here in his music! The album is one of Snidero's most compelling in years – and features a group that's already great on its own – with Dave Douglas on trumpet, Linda Oh on bass, Orrin Evans on piano, and Rudy Royston on drums – who are then joined by Do Yeon Kim on gayageum – a stringed instrument with older Korean roots, which is inflected into the core jazz proceedings of the group in really amazing ways! Snidero blows alto with a really seductive, soulful vibe – and the match of his edge and the older currents of the gayageum is really amazing – as the whole group stretches out on long tunes that include "Han", "Jeju", "Seoulful", and "Jenga". ✨✧ Jim SnideroMD66 ... CD
Savant, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from reedman Jim Snidero – wrapped up tight here in the frontline with trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, a pair who come off with a hell of a lot of focus and power right from the very first note! Sipiagin's horn provides this farther reach for Snidero's ideas – really pushing his alto strongly as the pair weave wonderful lines at the start of the tune, then break off into their solos – driven by excellent work from bandmates Andy Laverne on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. The album's got a fresh, bold sense of power that reminds us that jazz, once again, is all about bringing the right folks together in the right way! Titles include "MD66", "Recursion", "Free Beauty", "Who We've Known", "Blue In Green", "Unified", and "Purge". CD
