Hampshire & FoatGalaxies Like Grains Of Sand ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Spacey sounds from the dream team of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat – a set that feels a bit like music that Foat previously recorded under his own name, but which also has a more spiritual sound overall! Hampshire plays guitar and auto harp, and Foat plays Fender Rhodes, vibes, and other keyboards – but those instruments are just part of the sound here – as there's also some added strings, tenor, and other elements from time to time – inflecting the music with a visionary quality that reminds us of some of the more freethinking records coming out in the early 70s – especially the kind of small label sets that were years ahead of their time, and only finally getting their due all these many years later. The presentation of the package echoes the style of older Michael Garrick material on the UK Argo Records – and there's definitely a depth here to live up to that spirit, but also a warmer vibe overall. Titles include "How The Nights Can Fly", "Lullaby", "The Solar Winds", "A Long Way Home", and "All Washed Up". CD

VariousSand & Steel – The Classic Sound Of Jamaican Steel Drums ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. Used 2CD ... $9.99
We're guessing you're pretty excited about the prospect of percussive reggae and Jamaican R&B played out on rippling waves of steel drums, but this Caribbean steel drum bonanza isn't exactly going to satisfy your funky reggae steel drum jones. More in the vein of some of the ethnographic documents, this set showcases Jamaicans rocking the steel pans in a more traditional style. The first disc features six tracks each from the Steel Band Of The University Of The West Indies, the West India Regiment Steel Band, the Hell's Gate Steel Band and the Wirl All Star Steel Band, while disc 2 features a dozen numbers by the Rising Sun Steel Band and ten by the BWIA Sunset Steel Band. Includes "Mambo Negro", "Tropical Merengue", "Zambei", "Yellow Bird", "Perfidia", "Mitti Magita", "Blowing In The Wind", "Big Bamboo", "Island In The Sun", "Enjoy Yourself", "I Must Be Dreaming", "Nobody's Business", "Theme From Love Story", "To Sir With Love", "Let It Be" and more. Baby LaurenceDance Master ... LP
Classic Jazz, 1959/1960. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Quite an unusual jazz session – one that features lead lines from Baby Laurence, who's a tap dancer and not a musician! The approach sounds odd, but it works surprisingly well – thanks partly to the group who backs Baby up on the different sessions on the record – players who include Paul Quinichette on tenor, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute, Nat Pierce or Roland Hanna on piano, and Skeeter Best on drums. Laurence's taps are as rhythmic as you might expect, but also carry a bit of a tune as well – enough melodic energy that they work surprisingly well without his dancing as visual accompaniment for the record! Titles include "Buck Dance", "Mall March", "Whispering", "Baby At Birdland", "The Sand", "Ornithology", and "Delila's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Mean Sound MachineRunnin For The Ghost (with bonus download) ... LP
Peace & Rhythm, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
These guys aren't mean at all – as their groove is so warm and rhythmically compelling, they feel pretty darn friendly right from the very first note! The music's a compelling hybrid of Latin, African, and other rhythmic modes – served up with a freshness that's a nice change from some of the straighter Afro Funk combos around – who often just seem to be rehashing a 70s vibe. Instead, these guys are really trying to find their own sound – sometimes by using a bit of dub or other effects – but never in a way that's overdone, or gets in the way of the acoustic musical elements at their roots. All tracks are instrumental, and were performed live for the recording – and titles include "Return Of The March", "Touring Van", "Another Grain Of Sand", "Runnin For The Ghost", "Seeing The Bigger Picture", and "Van Chatter". Budos BandBudos Band 2 ... CD
Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". CD

Stanley ClarkeStanley Clarke – The Definitive Collection ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $11.99
Stanley Clarke's a bassist who first got his start in the headier side of the jazz spectrum in the 70s – but by the second half of that decade, he'd transformed into something else completely – a fantastic musician who could effortlessly reach across soul, funk, and fusion – combining all the best elements into an incredible sound that was all his own! Clarke's part of a generation that might include artists like Norman Connors, George Duke, and Mtume – all artists who might have been straighter jazz had they worked in the 60s, but who really flowered in the new freedoms of the 70s – as they hit superstardom with music like this. Duke and Clarke often collaborated – and you'll hear a good deal of that work on this set – which also includes work with Howard Hewett, Herbie Hancock, and Fuse One – plus lots of Stanley Clarke solo tracks too. 2CD set features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Concerto For Jazz Rock Orchestra", "Journey To Love", "Jamaican Boy", "Modern Man", "More Hot Fun", "The Dancer", "Silly Putty", "Heroes", "Straight To The Top", "Heaven Sent You", "We Supply", "Grand Prix", "Mothership Connection", "Funny How Time Flies", "Hideaway", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "What If I Should Fall In Love", "Time Exposure", "Sweet Baby", "Wild Dog", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Hot Fun". ✨✧ Severn DardenSound Of My Own Voice ... LP
Mercury, 1961. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
From hipster comedian to schlocky roles in The Planet of The Apes, Severn Darden was one of the 60s more enigmatic performers. This early album has him doing intellectual standup and skits with the help of the Second City cast – including Alan Arkin, Paul Sand, and Barbara Harris. The stuff's a bit dated, but it has that nice pre-hippy early 60s intellectual camp sort of twist. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DonovanMellow Yellow ... LP
Epic, 1967. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix (80s pressing) ... LP
RCA, 1974. Sealed ... $8.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Venus (Japan), 2002. Used ... $22.99
Shame about the cover, but cheescake nudie image aside, the album's got all the poise, class, and grace you'd expect in some other classics from pianist Roland Hanna – a player who already attained majesty in his music, long before he started adding "Sir" to his name! There's a fair bit of classical numbers here, used as surprising vehicles for jazz expression by Hanna – not the usual "jazz meets classical" vibe that stays very faithful to the structure of the original compositions – but more just a basic inspiration for improvisational melodies, played by the trio in a way that has Roland's piano strongly out in the lead, with subtle accompaniment from Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Titles include "Prelude", "Like Grains Of Sand", "Serenade", "Apres Un Reve", "Based On Gustav", and "Going Home". CD

Lee HazlewoodThese Boots Are Made For Walkin' – The Complete MGM Recordings ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 19.99
Genius, pure genius! (Have we said that about Lee too many times before?) The work of Lee Hazlewood is beyond description – a bit of vocals, a bit of country, a bit of lounge, and a bit of rock – all wrapped up with a sinister edge that has you believing that this was the man who used to refer to his frequent musical partner as "Nasty" Sinatra over the headphones during recording sessions! The set features 35 tracks from Lee's obscure years at MGM records – wonderful vocal tunes that rank with some of his best ever, plus a few weird instrumentals, recorded by Lee Hazlewood's Woodchucks. Insanely wonderful stuff – records that we come back to again and again and again over the years – finally presented in their entirety, with a great set of notes on the music! Tracks include "Hands", "Mannford Oklahoma", "This Town", "Sand", "Child", "Little War", "Fort Worth", "Summer Wine", "I Move Around", "After Six", "Batman", "Summer Nights", "Suzi Jane Is Back In Town", "In Our Time", "When A Fool Loves A Fool", and "So Long Babe". Lee HazlewoodVery Special World Of Lee Hazlewood ... CD
MGM/Water, Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
Lee Hazlewood's world is always a very special one for us – filled with great songs, amazing production, and those icy vocals that Lee sang unlike anyone else! This album may be one of Hazlewood's greatest from the 60s – at least among his US recordings – and it's a near-perfect session with arrangements from Billy Strange, often with a slight bit of sinister guitar in the mix, but also some sublime strings too – used sparely and carefully to create a sense of deepening darkness! Lee's at his sharpest, wittiest here – singing some of his most sophisticated songs to date, but also throwing in a few nods towards his earlier pop productions. Titles include "Not The Lovin Kind", "For One Moment", "Sand", "Your Sweet Love", "My Autumn's Done Come", "I Move Around", "So Long Babe", "Bugles In The Afternoon", "My Baby Cried All Night Long", and Lee's wonderful parody remake of "These Boots Are Made For Walking". The lyrical side of Eddie Henderson – laid out beautifully in a lovely quartet recording that also features John Scofield on guitar! The album's mix of trumpet and guitar is extremely haunting – and Eddie hits a warm note that's mighty nice – almost a nod back towards some of his 70s modes, yet without any R&B touches – pure jazz all the way, couched in Scofield's strong tone – with added support from Doug Weiss on bass and Billy Drummond on drums. The album's a great balance to some of Eddie's other work in recent years – a great reminder of this side of his talents, on titles that include "Be Cool", "Missing Miles", "Popo", "By Myself", "Sand Storm", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Jitterbug Waltz". Jermaine didn't really hit his stride making up tempo bass heavy funk until Let's Get Serious, which followed this album a few years later, but this set has a few moments that are stretching towards that high water mark in his career. Overall, it's a rather slick, highly produced affair, and though Jermaine likes to step out and push his bass playing way up front, it's the mellow synth-kissed groover "Castles Of Sand" we dig the most on this album. ✨✧ Keith JarrettStandards Vol 2 ... LP
ECM, 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A second great set of standards from Keith Jarrett – and like the first one, a great reminder to many that the pianist was still very strongly schooled in jazz! Although Keith really opened up ways for pianists to stretch out in the 70s, his move to material like this in the early 80s was a great one – as it moved Jarrett away from some territory that was a bit overly-trod, and managed to bring a new sort of sensitivity to his music! Of course, the whole trio here is really part of the success – bass from Gary Peacock and drums from Jack DeJohnette – both, like Jarrett, players who'd more than had their chance to stretch out, explore new modes, and were bringing all that freedom and experience to play here in a setting that's outwardly conventional, but still plenty darn fresh. David Earle JohnsonTime Is Free ... LP
Vanguard, 1977. Very Good ... $0.99
A weird little record – but not without some nice moments! The record was produced and put together by Jan Hammer – and in many ways, is very much like his hard-jamming fusion work fo the time. Earle plays congas, timbales, moog, and other percussion – and also sings on a number of cuts, often with some sort of vocal programming. Hammer's on most tracks too – jamming away on keyboards and synth with a strong sound that predates Miami Vice, and which sounds a lot rougher and meaner. There's definitely some good tracks on here that would appeal to any fan of funky fusion, but there's also some weirder noodlier bits too. Flipper/Dagored (Italy), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The title only partly gives this one away – as sound library genius Alessandro Alessandroni turns towards the world of baroque and romantic music for inspiration – yet also manages to serve up something that's very much his own in the process! This isn't one of those records in which classical compositions get an easy listening spin – and instead, Alessandroni has a way of evoking ancient ideas while still also using lots of groovy Italian soundtrack modes – a bit like the way the occasional baroque theme or electric harpsichord would turn up in some groovy 60s film scores. Both of those elements appear here, alongside other keyboards, some acoustic guitar, and other instrumentation – used in a way that's as evocative as some of Alessandro's film work. A sweet funky set from the 70s – originally recorded as a sound library session, but handled by Italian soundtrack maestro Alessandro Alessandroni! A few cuts have vocals – ala I Cantorni Moderni – and the whole thing has a warm, sexy 70s groove that's right up there with the best Italian work of the scene from the time. Demonic sounds, but surprisingly sweet as well – done with this easy-flowing style that's really wonderful – and much more similar to the seductive sound library work of Alessandro Alessandroni, than to some of the starker, darker horror of the time! There's definitely some spooky passages, but they're almost always warmed up in really nice ways – both with keyboards, and with these wordless vocals from the lovely Giulia De Mutiis, who drifts through the record like some sexy ghost. Her vocals almost give the whole thing a more dream-like feel at times – not too atmospheric, but with clouds of sweet sounds that blow through the space in a wonderful way. Sandro Brugnolini & Luigi MalatestaGungala La Pantera Nuda ... CD
Cinevox/Saimel (Spain), 1968. Used ... $14.99
A nude panther? This one already had our attention with the title – and once we heard the music, things got even better – a very groovy blend of jazz and 60s elements by Sandro Brugnolini & Luigi Malatesta – put together in modes that rival some of the better-known Italian scores of the time! The leadoff tune "Gungala" features great English vocals from Pat Starke, alongside some cool-stepping organ – and that organ returns often on other instrumental tracks, almost creating this Piero Piccioni-like mood amidst the strings and some of the more exotic instrumentation! Even when the orchestrations are a bit more conventional, they're still quite striking – and the score is one of those great Italian 60s efforts that seems to offer up new flavors at every twist and turn. Titles include "Il Serpente", "Gungala Serenata", "Tam Tam Marimba", "Gungala Road", "July", "Sabbie Mobili", and "Afro Free". CD

Sandro Brugnolini & Modern Jazz GangGli Arcangeli (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Dagored (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
An incredible jazz soundtrack from early 60s Italy – performed by saxophonist Sandro Brugnolini and his Modern Jazz Gang! The work's on a par with any of the great French jazz soundtracks of the late 50s – with a rich, evocative style of composition that takes the music far past its initial use in the film – and which makes the album itself an extremely compelling batch of tracks that works almost as a movie in sound! The solo performances are wonderful all around, and Brugnolini's alto and clarinet are joined by Cicci Santucci on trombone and Enzo Scoppa on tenor and flute – and as a special bonus, American jazz vocalist Helen Merrill sings on 3 of the album's best tracks. Titles include "Helen's Blues", "Infedeli", "Interlude In Jazz", "Portuense Cha Cha Cha", "Paolo In Love", and "Speak Only For You". LP, Vinyl record album

Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". Sandro Brugnolini/Stefano TorossiMusica Per Commenti Sonori (with bonus CD) ... LP
Carosello/Schema (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
An Italian funk double-header – a sweet little set from the end of the 60s, and one that features killer cuts from both Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi! We love either artist on their other own records, but there also seems to be something about putting them together here that makes them even better than before – certainly funkier, as the album's full of the kind of sharp, hard-grooving titles that first made us fall in love with sound library records in the first place! The date of the album's 1969, and both musicians make nice use of psych elements in their instrumentation – adding a bit of fuzz, wah-wah, or trippy guitar in just the right spaces – never going over the top, or getting too indulgent – but just moving in a groove that's tightly jazz funky at the bottom, and maybe a bit freaky at the top. Wonderful work throughout – and titles include "Sweet Beat", "Repetition", "Starter", and "Makkaresh" by Stefano Torossi – and "Wawa", "Motuproprio", "Polyphony", and "Flyer" by Sandro Brugnolini. ✨✧ ClashSandinista! ... LP
Epic, 1980. Very Good+ 3LP ... $39.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Dandelion SetThousand Strands – 1975 to 2015 ... LP
Buried Treasure (France), 2016. Sealed ... $19.99
There's a date range listed on the cover that stretches back to the 70s – not the actual age of the music on this set, but instead a way of indicating the decades worth of inspiration drawn upon by The Dandelion Set – especially the cooler post-psych elements of the UK scene in the 70s, and some of the trippier psych revival sounds of the following decade! These guys might have been right at home on Bam Caruso or early Creation Records – and share a similar love of the weirder, offbeat qualities of the late 60s – blending fuzzy performance with equally freaky production – using light touches of funk or analogue electronics along the way. Tracks on the record work together to create a very vivid audio scene – one that's echoed by the equally trippy liner notes by Alan Moore – and titles include "Harps Ascend", "Cosmic Flux History", "Tone Garden", "Pristina Strawberry Girl", "Redherringbone", "A Rasher Of Wind", "Gardense", and "The Third Programme". Guido e Maurizio De AngelisSandokan ... LP
RCA (Italy), 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Quite a groovy soundtrack – even though it was recorded for a cheesy Sinbad ripoff! The work is by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, and the tracks mix exotic themes with more of a 70s instrumentation style – which makes them slightly funky at strange places. There's some nice Mandingo-like percussion on the record – and a few tunes have a driving sitar groove to them! 2 tracks are rocking vocal numbers – "Sandokan" and "Sweet Lady Blue" – both performed by the group Oliver's Onions. Other tracks include "Brooke", "Dedicata A Marianna", "Arrembaggio", "Caccia All Tigre", and the funky orchestral reading of "Sandokan". LP, Vinyl record album
