Stanley ClarkeRocks Pebbles & Sand ... LP
Epic, 1980. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Killer work from Stanley Clarke – a set to start off the 80s, but still very much in that unique blend of jazz, rock, and soul he forged so well in the 70s! The set begins with really heavy drums and bass – nicely propelled, but never too strong or too jamming – a great balance that really sets the pace well for the record as Clarke and the combo pulsate through a range of nice little numbers – often linked with a cool motorcycle sound effect! There's a few 80s touches, mostly in the keyboards, but these are never too modern – and all used very nicely. Titles include the extended "Story Of A Man & A Woman" suite – plus "Danger Street", "All Hell Broke Loose", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Underestimation". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $34.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Shirley BasseyShirley Bassey Is Really Something ... LP
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good ... $7.99
Funky Shirley Bassey! This is a great set of Shirley's groove-happy work cut in the late 60s – hip tunes arranged by UK easy maestro Johnny Harris, best known for his fantastic work on the Stepping Stones record under his own name, forever a beathead classic! Features the great, funky big band version of "Light My Fire" – one of Shirley's best tunes ever, and a cut that's been sampled and remixed often in recent years! Also includes the breakbeat version of "Spinning Wheel", and the cuts "My Way", "Sea & Sand", "What About Today?", "You & I", "Easy To Be Hard", "Life Goes On" and "Yesterday I Heard The Rain". Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... $9.99 15.98
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". CD

Hi Fi/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1956. Used ... $6.99
Dorothy Carless is a British singer by birth, but she's working here in an intimate and breathy style that's perfect for the mid 50s LA setting of the album! Backings are by the Barney Kessel trio – a group here that features not only some sensitive guitar from Barney, similar to his mode used with other singers of the time – but also some especially great work on vibes, which ring out nicely, and give the album a really unique feel! Dorothy's quite comfortable in these spare backings – and shimmers along warmly with the guitar and vibes – on titles that include "Bidin My Time", "Baby Baby You're The One", "Hello My Lover Goodbye", "It's Too Late Now", "I'll Never Be The Same", "For Every Man There's A Woman", "Here Lies Love", and "Love Letters In The Sand". Stanley ClarkeStanley Clarke – The Definitive Collection ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99
Stanley Clarke's a bassist who first got his start in the headier side of the jazz spectrum in the 70s – but by the second half of that decade, he'd transformed into something else completely – a fantastic musician who could effortlessly reach across soul, funk, and fusion – combining all the best elements into an incredible sound that was all his own! Clarke's part of a generation that might include artists like Norman Connors, George Duke, and Mtume – all artists who might have been straighter jazz had they worked in the 60s, but who really flowered in the new freedoms of the 70s – as they hit superstardom with music like this. Duke and Clarke often collaborated – and you'll hear a good deal of that work on this set – which also includes work with Howard Hewett, Herbie Hancock, and Fuse One – plus lots of Stanley Clarke solo tracks too. 2CD set features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Concerto For Jazz Rock Orchestra", "Journey To Love", "Jamaican Boy", "Modern Man", "More Hot Fun", "The Dancer", "Silly Putty", "Heroes", "Straight To The Top", "Heaven Sent You", "We Supply", "Grand Prix", "Mothership Connection", "Funny How Time Flies", "Hideaway", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "What If I Should Fall In Love", "Time Exposure", "Sweet Baby", "Wild Dog", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Hot Fun". Clear LightClear Light ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good- ... $24.99
One of the great lost psych albums on late 60s Elektra Records – a set that's maybe got enough power and majesty to stand next to contemporaneous label releases by Love and The Doors! Like both of those groups, Clear Light have a vision here that's completely their own – a sound that steps out immediately to let you know that they're not just another copycat combo from the garage underground, and instead have this vivid new message that demands to be heard – unabashedly forward in its conception, and with a surprisingly sinister edge – yet all without any sense of being too full of itself either! Production is by Paul Rothschild, and is as superb as his best Elektra work of the period – and titles include "Black Roses", "With All In Mind", "The Ballad Of Freddie & Larry", "Sand", and "Night Sounds Loud". Nicola ConteOther Directions ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2004. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". Imagine the best work of Schema or Compost done in an all-organic, all-natural mode – and you've got the beautiful sound of this set! LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
From hipster comedian to schlocky roles in The Planet of The Apes, Severn Darden was one of the 60s more enigmatic performers. This early album has him doing intellectual standup and skits with the help of the Second City cast – including Alan Arkin, Paul Sand, and Barbara Harris. The stuff's a bit dated, but it has that nice pre-hippy early 60s intellectual camp sort of twist. LP, Vinyl record album

DonovanMellow Yellow ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". Columbia, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 20.98
Maybe the most underrated Dylan album, from a one time underrated period all together – which is rightly changing these days! Shot Of Love finds Dylan in the tail end of his most forthrightly spiritual era, but it's got more of a rock & soul vibe than the more polished couple records before it. It's well worth having, and ultimately one of his best of the 80s. Includes "Shot Of Love", "Heart Of Mine", "Property Of Jesus", "Lenny Bruce", "Watered Down Love", "The Groom's Still", "Waiting At The Alter", "Dead Man, Dead Man", "In The Summertime", "Trouble", and the incredible "Every Grain Of Sand", now one the best and fan-treasured songs in Dylan's canon, even if the album it's on was underappreciated for so many years. Von FreemanDoin' It Right Now ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good ... $9.99
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Youn on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. Venus (Japan), 2002. Used ... $13.99
Shame about the cover, but cheescake nudie image aside, the album's got all the poise, class, and grace you'd expect in some other classics from pianist Roland Hanna – a player who already attained majesty in his music, long before he started adding "Sir" to his name! There's a fair bit of classical numbers here, used as surprising vehicles for jazz expression by Hanna – not the usual "jazz meets classical" vibe that stays very faithful to the structure of the original compositions – but more just a basic inspiration for improvisational melodies, played by the trio in a way that has Roland's piano strongly out in the lead, with subtle accompaniment from Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Titles include "Prelude", "Like Grains Of Sand", "Serenade", "Apres Un Reve", "Based On Gustav", and "Going Home". CD

Eddie HendersonBe Cool ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2018. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Cool is one thing that Eddie Henderson always is – as his sense of tone and timing just seem to get better and better as the years go on – and that's saying a lot, given that Eddie's legacy goes way back to the 70s! And although he did plenty of fusion and soul experiments in his youth, the later decades have always had Henderson moving into a role more as a classic stylist on the trumpet – one who seems to always set a new bar for his playing as time passes by – to a point where anyone would be daft not to call Eddie one of the more important voices on his instrument in the past 30 years. That sense of cool is definitely in place here, as is Henderson's subtle swing, even on the ballads – as Eddie works in a tight quintet with Donald Harrison on alto, Kenny Barron on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – on titles that include "Fran Dance", "Loft Funk", "Nightride", "The Sand Castle Head Hunter", "Naima", "Smoke Screen", "Bee Cool", and "Moontrane". Pete JollySeasons ... CD
A&M/Dusty Groove, 1970. Used ... $24.99
One of our favorite-ever keyboard albums – a rare lost session from pianist Pete Jolly – one of his only electric dates, and a completely improvised set of grooves! Pete plays electric piano, organ, and even a bit of musette – jamming in the studio with help from Chuck Berhofer on bass, Paul Humphrey on drums, John Pisano on guitar, and Milt Holland and Emil Richards on percussion – all of whom bring in some sly, subtle touches to the grooves that are totally great! The album's much more open than other keyboard dates from the time – almost in the territory of some of Herbie Hancock's most experimental work, but a fair bit more groove-based too – given that the album's filled with short, funky tracks all the way through. There's some echoes of Bob James work to come – and given the 1970 date of the record, it could almost be said that Jolly predates a whole host of 70s keyboard talents – setting his mark with this uniquely laidback set of tracks. Titles include the classic "Plummer Park", plus "Rainbow", "Seasons", "Indian's Summer", "Pete Jolly", "Leaves", "Springs", "Bees", and "Sand Storm". CD

The play and lyrics are by William Dumaresq, but it's Galt's great music that really makes the whole thing crackle with electricity – played by a different group than on his usual Kilmarnock albums (British players, we think), and in a mode that ranges from jaunty to jazzy, rocking to soulful – all with some heavy message-oriented tunes. Modern ArtOriental Towers (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Color Tapes/Lion, 1983. New Copy ... $8.99
A beautiful bit of electro pop from Modern Art – a group who was a much more obscure part of the UK post-punk scene than some of the artists recording for labels like Cherry Red or Factory Records! Yet there's also a sound here that really evokes some of the hipper strands of the latter – maybe the sound of early New Order, but without as much darkness, or the excellent From The Hip album by Section 25! Like that record, the approach here is spare and focused on electric percussion and instrumentation – used very tunefully, and on tunes that are surprisingly catchy, even though quite far from any commercial territory. The simplicity gives the record a surprisingly optimistic feel – and since the original run was only issued on cassette, the whole thing missed getting the attention it deserved the first time around. A dream of a record from Marvin Parks – a hell of a jazz singer, and one that we'd place in an elite legacy that runs from Oscar Brown up through Jose James! The work here is wonderful – as Nicola Conte produced the record, and gives it the same sort of jazzy sparkle as his own sublime records of the past decade – a groove that's never too overstated, but is also a reworking of an older 60s soul jazz mode – but refitted with all the right sort of sophistication to match Marvin's wonderful voice! There's no programmed rhythms at all – all the instrumentation is live jazz – and titles include a great new take on the Conte tunes "Sea & Sand" and "Awakening" – plus the original "African Other Blues", and versions of "Charade", "How Insensitive", "The Very Thought Of You", "Brother Where Are You", "Nature Boy", "If I Should Lose You", and "Swingin Shepherd Blues". 2LP version features 3 bonus tracks – "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", "If You Could See Me Now", and "All Blues". Austin Boogie Crew, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99
Sweet electro funk from Danny Spence – a set of instrumentals that draw from an 80s mode, but deliver the sounds in a very contemporary style – especially the way they splash together the rhythms and basslines at the bottom end of the sonic spectrum! The tunes are simple and unadorned, but pretty darn catchy nonetheless – with a bit of brightness on the keyboard lines over the deeper rhythms – and grooves that mostly move in a midtempo mode that underscores the tunefulness of the melodies! Titles include "Goodnight", "Mai Tai", "Love Adventure", "Sand", and "Ear To Ear". LP, Vinyl record album

Stax, 1973. Very Good ... $9.99
Warmly grooving 70s soul from The Staple Singers – recorded in a fuller Memphis mode that's miles from their gospel roots, but still plenty darn nice! The style here is very much in keeping with the hit Staples mode of the time – righteous, full, but still nice and earthy at the bottom – a beautiful blending of the group's one male and three female vocals – served up with some slight electric touches in the rhythms. Tracks are tight and catchy, but never poppy – and titles include "If You're Ready", an obvious follow up to "I'll Take You There" – plus "Tellin Lies", "Love Comes In All Colors", "Drown Yourself", "I Ain't Raisin No Sand", and a nice version of "Grandma's Hands". The debut album from 70s tunefully tongue-in-cheek pop rockers 10 CC – and the intro to their unique blend of masterful pop songcraft and satirical, often vaguely cynical lyricism! As was the case with much of their ouvre, the jokiness rarely treads on the strong songwriting and catchy compositions – and paved the way for the more irony laden pop for decades to come! Titles include "Johnny Don't Do It", "Sand In My Face", "Donna", "The Dean And I", "Headline Hustler", "Speed Kills", "Rubber Bullets", "Ships Don't Disappear (Do They?)", "The Hospital Song", "Fresh Air For Mama" and more. A seminal bit of west coast cool jazz from the mid 50s – a session led by Cy Touff, a lesser-remembered player from the LA scene, and an instrumentalist who used a bass trumpet! Cy's working here in the company of a host of more familiar names – including Richie Kamuca, Russ Freeman, Johnny Mandel, Leroy Vinnegar, and Pete Jolly – on a set of tightly arranged tunes that have a swinging ensemble feel that reminds us a bit of Bob Cooper's work from the time. ECM, 1975. Very Good ... $6.99
Moody musings from guitarist Ralph Towner – recorded here on 12-string and classical guitar, plus a bit of piano – and working with a quartet that includes Jan Garbarek on sax and flute, Eberhard Weber on bass and cello, and Jon Christensen on drums and percussion. The group do a nice job of mixing up sweeter Towner moments with numbers that have a darker, almost noisier edge at times – and Garbarek's work on soprano sax gives the record some of its best moments. Early genius on ECM! Titles include the slightly funky "Piscean Dance", plus "Sand", "Red & Black", "Oceanus", "Visitation", and "Drifting Petals". LP, Vinyl record album

Trip (Silke Schwinger & Fatty George)Trip ... LP
Digatone (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99
One of the coolest rock operas of the 70s – and one of the most obscure, as well! Trip tells the story of a soulful prophet who arrives in Vienna, then is spurned by the city – and the music here is some of the funkiest we've ever heard in such a setting – done in a style that starts with all the groovy elements that Galt MacDermot brought to his score for Hair, but adding in some very cool MPS-like touches – including electric sitar, funky drums, jazzy flute, and burning Hammond – all elements that step into the mix to really make the whole thing sound great! Vocals are all in German, which further gives the whole thing an offbeat vibe – and also helps us concentrate on the ultra-cool instrumentation on the tunes. Titles include the slow-break classic "White Sand", plus "Road Trip Through Vienna", "I'm In Tears", "Jazz Style", "We Are Here On An Island", "Sex Song", and "Song Without Words". MCA/Universal, 1973. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
A record we'd never part with – and easily our favorite album ever from The Who! Quadrophenia represents the group at its peak from all perspectives – songwriting, performance, and even studio presence – as the album's got a sonic sensibility that few other albums of the time can match! The set's a concept record – a story, like Tommy – yet it remains incredibly lean, without any overcluttered rock opera feel – so much so that most tunes stand mightily on their own, but also have a dense sense of texture when taken together as part of the double-length album. And we'll also say that the record's one of the few extended sets we always end up breezing through from start to finish – almost surprised by the time it comes to a close – and often hitting repeat to hear the whole thing over again! Titles include "I Am The Sea", "The Real Me", "Cut My Hair", "The Punk & The Godfather", "Sea & Sand", "5:15", "Bell Boy", "Love Rein O'Er Me", and "Is It In My Head". 2CD deluxe version features a completely new remastered version for 2011 – supervised by Pete Townshend, as a "director's cut" of the record – plus 11 previously unreleased demos that are pretty amazing too. Plus, the whole thing contains a booklet with track introduction, plus another booklet with the original photo-story that went with the album! CD

Epic/Sundazed, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s – here in the original mono mix! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! That sense of cool is definitely in place here, as is Henderson's subtle swing, even on the ballads – as Eddie works in a tight quintet with Donald Harrison on alto, Kenny Barron on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – on titles that include "Fran Dance", "Loft Funk", "Nightride", "The Sand Castle Head Hunter", "Naima", "Smoke Screen", "Be Cool", and "Moontrane". About half the set is originals by members of the group – and if we had to pick one instrument that seems to have the strongest voice in the group, it might be the guitar of Scofield – maybe in part because he can skirt the two different worlds so well. Titles include "Tony Then Jack", "Dirty Ground", "El Swing", "Hudson", "Lay Lady Lay", "Woodstock", "Wait Until Tomorrow", and "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". LP, Vinyl record album

Peace & Rhythm, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
These guys aren't mean at all – as their groove is so warm and rhythmically compelling, they feel pretty darn friendly right from the very first note! The music's a compelling hybrid of Latin, African, and other rhythmic modes – served up with a freshness that's a nice change from some of the straighter Afro Funk combos around – who often just seem to be rehashing a 70s vibe. Instead, these guys are really trying to find their own sound – sometimes by using a bit of dub or other effects – but never in a way that's overdone, or gets in the way of the acoustic musical elements at their roots. All tracks are instrumental, and were performed live for the recording – and titles include "Return Of The March", "Touring Van", "Another Grain Of Sand", "Runnin For The Ghost", "Seeing The Bigger Picture", and "Van Chatter". Columbia, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
Dylan on the road from the late 70s to early 80s – bringing words and wisdom that are more spiritually inspired than anything he'd put out before – backed by some of the most soulful arrangements and players he's ever had behind him! Trouble No More is all unreleased material and focuses on the live shows in support of what's since been dubbed Dylan's "Christian Period" – which is essentially true – and has long been ripe for a reassessment. The gravelly nature of his voice in the later years, which kind of begin here, gives it a really passionate vibe, while the bluesy soul arrangements and gospel style backing singers provide such a lovely backdrop. All tracks are previously unreleased, and captured live from throughout the 1979-1981 tours – with a ton more on this super deluxe edition that were never on any Dylan studio albums at all! This 8CD/DVD super deluxe edition is REALLY epic –with live versions of "Slow Train Coming", "Gotta Serve Somebody","I Believe In You", "When You Gonna Wake Up?", "Gonna Change My Way Of Feeling", "In The Garden", "Every Grain Of Sand", "Previous Angel", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Saving Grace", the unheard and unreleased "Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody", "Ain't No Man Righteous" and "Blessed Is The Name" and more on 2CDs. It also includes 2CDs of rare and unreleased studio material, 2CDs that focus on live recordings from Toronto in 1980, 2CDs of live material from London in 1981 and a bonus DVD "Musical Film". Last but not least, it's beautiful little book. What a treasure trove! CD

Full-on 80s fusion from Terumasa Hino – a set that's got as much in the way of beats and keyboards as it does his own strong work on cornet and flugelhorn in the lead! The album was recorded in partnership with keyboardist Philippe Saisse, and definitely has the vibe of his own work of the time – recorded in New York, with guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – but still plenty of space for Hino to show off those soulful solo lines he first developed once he electrified his sound in the 70s! There's some nice fuzz around the edges at times – almost giving the record a straigher version of Jon Hassell's music at points – and titles include "Portopia", "On This Night", "Black Sand Beach", "Matador", "Riverside Park", and "My Mind's Made Up". ✨✧ Modern ArtOriental Towers ... LP
Color Tapes, 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweetly funky and very slinky – this is one of the best early 70s scores by the great Italian composer Piero Umiliani! The record has lots of bubbling electric piano, rumbling electric basslines, warm acoustic percussion, and moody wordless vocals. At some level, the album sounds a lot like the contemporaneous work by the great Italian Fender Rhodes combo Crossfire – but it's also filled with a spacey madness that could only come from the pen of Umiliani! One of the best of the recent Easy Tempo reissues – and very nicely put together, with a consistent sound throughout! Magical interplay from the twin-trombone team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – heard here on one of their key classics for Columbia Records in the 50s! The great thing about the set is the way in which both players really bring a sense of "voice" to their music – trading back and forth almost like two friends chatting in friendly conversation – but managing to do so with a lot more swing than most! Backings are by Dick Katz on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – and there's a short, simple brilliance to these tunes that's hard to deny. Case in point is the very cool use of sitar or organ a few tracks here – never in a way that's overdone, but which brings in a sweet Eastern flair next to some of the grittier guitars – which themselves are also pretty darn great, thanks to the group's chunky rocking groove! Lyrics are all in English, and you've no doubt heard their classic "Venus" – served up here alongside other great cuts that include "Boll Weevil", "Acka Raga", "Love Machine", "California Here I Come", "Poor Boy", and "Love Buzz". Demonic sounds, but surprisingly sweet as well – done with this easy-flowing style that's really wonderful – and much more similar to the seductive sound library work of Alessandro Alessandroni, than to some of the starker, darker horror of the time! There's definitely some spooky passages, but they're almost always warmed up in really nice ways – both with keyboards, and with these wordless vocals from the lovely Giulia De Mutiis, who drifts through the record like some sexy ghost. Her vocals almost give the whole thing a more dream-like feel at times – not too atmospheric, but with clouds of sweet sounds that blow through the space in a wonderful way. Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $34.99
A stunning lost chapter in the career of Alessandro Alessandroni – one of our favorite soundtrack artists of all time! Alessandroni wrote almost as much music for sound libraries as he did for films – and as with the tracks on the set, some of his best nuggets have been lost to the mainstream for decades – lurking in the vaults, and ready to spring forth and maybe even topple some of his better-known work! That's definitely the case with these cuts, which really shed light on a funky stretch of Alessandroni's career in the 70s – a moment when he was still working with all the warm bossa and jazz charms of his previous efforts, but also stepping out with these sharper, funkier styles too – sometimes even with a stronger vocal lead than normal. About a third of these tracks feature lyrics – sung by Lorena, Giullia De Mutiis, and by I Cantori Moderni – and although the tracks are from different sessions, they really work well together – thanks to the collection talents of the folks at Four Flies. Titles include "Underground Disco", "Sea Breeze", "Shot Undercover", "Flirt No 2", "Night Fly", "Soul Meeting", "After Crime", "Sweet Emotions", "Obstinate Pop", and "Synthetic Rendezvous". Panda/Sonor (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – as the album leaps off to a very dramatic style, right from the start – with a surprisingly noisy sound titled after the incubation of the heavens! That noise moves aside a bit as the album moves on, but the whole thing still stays very strongly in the fuzzy, freaky territory you might know from other Italian rarities issued under the name of Braen and Raskovich – which were both studio pseudonyms for Alessandro Alessandroni and Giuliano Sorgini! Yet despite the fame of both of those artists in other settings, they're very much in a different space here – not just psych-inspired sound library modes, but also pre-industrial sounds too – of a style that seems to hint at the darker depths of the British underground in the post-punk years. At times, if we told you the album was a project by Throbbing Gristle, you wouldn't be surprised – and like TG, there's some surprisingly tuneful points amidst the noisier moments. An Italian funk double-header – a sweet little set from the end of the 60s, and one that features killer cuts from both Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi! We love either artist on their other own records, but there also seems to be something about putting them together here that makes them even better than before – certainly funkier, as the album's full of the kind of sharp, hard-grooving titles that first made us fall in love with sound library records in the first place! The date of the album's 1969, and both musicians make nice use of psych elements in their instrumentation – adding a bit of fuzz, wah-wah, or trippy guitar in just the right spaces – never going over the top, or getting too indulgent – but just moving in a groove that's tightly jazz funky at the bottom, and maybe a bit freaky at the top. Wonderful work throughout – and titles include "Sweet Beat", "Repetition", "Starter", and "Makkaresh" by Stefano Torossi – and "Wawa", "Motuproprio", "Polyphony", and "Flyer" by Sandro Brugnolini. A pair of rare later moments from Sandy Bull – the revolutionary guitarist who made some amazing records in the 60s! Steel Tears is from the mid 90s – a record that has Sandy Bull very firmly established in the Nashville scene, after making his big early waves on the west coast. The record is completely different than before – not long instrumental songs with plenty of effects, and instead these shorter, tighter tunes that feature lead vocals from Sandy alongside his guitar, banjo, and pedal steel. Most of the tracks have a small group of friends – and there's a nicely intimate feel to the record, which keeps these straighter country songs from ever sounding too commercial. Titles include "Arabalabama", "I Don't Care", "Can I Get A Witness", "Sideshow", "Steel Tears", and "It Should Be Easier Now". Endventions & Tributes is an album of previously-unreleased tracks – material that sometimes recalls the sound of Sandy Bull's earlier years, with some elements of Eastern music and trippier guitar coming into the mix. And yes, the format is one that you're certainly familiar with – but this is also one of those piano trio records that states itself as unique right from the start – not through any avant inclinations, but just through the freshness of the group and the way they work together – a strength that partly comes from the album's original music by Carnovale! In fact, we might say that these songs are strong enough, they hardly needed to title the album – as great tracks include "Rush", "Interpolation", "Miriam & Sara", "Return", "Malinko", and "Zisa". One of the most soulful sets we've heard from Kenny Garrett in years – thanks partly to the presence of Pharoah Sanders in his group!
