Jerry GoldsmithSand Pebbles ... LP
20th Century, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
A really striking score from Jerry Goldsmith – penned with just the right sense of drama and tension for this mid 60s military thriller! Goldsmith's already working here with a full palette of colors – and Lionel Newman conducts the music with an added richness that seems to bring out all of his long experience on big budget epics, yet deliver the end results with the more subtle, compressed modes that make Goldsmith one of the more mature composers of the 60s. Horns shimmer with this great sense of restraint – almost painting colors in sound – and given the setting of the film, there's some slight exotic hints in a few instrumental passages as well. Hampshire & FoatGalaxies Like Grains Of Sand ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Spacey sounds from the dream team of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat – a set that feels a bit like music that Foat previously recorded under his own name, but which also has a more spiritual sound overall! Hampshire plays guitar and auto harp, and Foat plays Fender Rhodes, vibes, and other keyboards – but those instruments are just part of the sound here – as there's also some added strings, tenor, and other elements from time to time – inflecting the music with a visionary quality that reminds us of some of the more freethinking records coming out in the early 70s – especially the kind of small label sets that were years ahead of their time, and only finally getting their due all these many years later. The presentation of the package echoes the style of older Michael Garrick material on the UK Argo Records – and there's definitely a depth here to live up to that spirit, but also a warmer vibe overall. Titles include "How The Nights Can Fly", "Lullaby", "The Solar Winds", "A Long Way Home", and "All Washed Up". CD

VariousSand & Steel – The Classic Sound Of Jamaican Steel Drums ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. Used 2CD ... $2.99
We're guessing you're pretty excited about the prospect of percussive reggae and Jamaican R&B played out on rippling waves of steel drums, but this Caribbean steel drum bonanza isn't exactly going to satisfy your funky reggae steel drum jones. More in the vein of some of the ethnographic documents, this set showcases Jamaicans rocking the steel pans in a more traditional style. The first disc features six tracks each from the Steel Band Of The University Of The West Indies, the West India Regiment Steel Band, the Hell's Gate Steel Band and the Wirl All Star Steel Band, while disc 2 features a dozen numbers by the Rising Sun Steel Band and ten by the BWIA Sunset Steel Band. Includes "Mambo Negro", "Tropical Merengue", "Zambei", "Yellow Bird", "Perfidia", "Mitti Magita", "Blowing In The Wind", "Big Bamboo", "Island In The Sun", "Enjoy Yourself", "I Must Be Dreaming", "Nobody's Business", "Theme From Love Story", "To Sir With Love", "Let It Be" and more. Baby LaurenceDance Master ... LP
Classic Jazz, 1959/1960. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Quite an unusual jazz session – one that features lead lines from Baby Laurence, who's a tap dancer and not a musician! The approach sounds odd, but it works surprisingly well – thanks partly to the group who backs Baby up on the different sessions on the record – players who include Paul Quinichette on tenor, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute, Nat Pierce or Roland Hanna on piano, and Skeeter Best on drums. Laurence's taps are as rhythmic as you might expect, but also carry a bit of a tune as well – enough melodic energy that they work surprisingly well without his dancing as visual accompaniment for the record! Titles include "Buck Dance", "Mall March", "Whispering", "Baby At Birdland", "The Sand", "Ornithology", and "Delila's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Funky Shirley Bassey! This is a great set of Shirley's groove-happy work cut in the late 60s – hip tunes arranged by UK easy maestro Johnny Harris, best known for his fantastic work on the Stepping Stones record under his own name, forever a beathead classic! Features the great, funky big band version of "Light My Fire" – one of Shirley's best tunes ever, and a cut that's been sampled and remixed often in recent years! Also includes the breakbeat version of "Spinning Wheel", and the cuts "My Way", "Sea & Sand", "What About Today?", "You & I", "Easy To Be Hard", "Life Goes On" and "Yesterday I Heard The Rain". Big Mean Sound MachineRunnin For The Ghost (with bonus download) ... LP
Peace & Rhythm, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
These guys aren't mean at all – as their groove is so warm and rhythmically compelling, they feel pretty darn friendly right from the very first note! The music's a compelling hybrid of Latin, African, and other rhythmic modes – served up with a freshness that's a nice change from some of the straighter Afro Funk combos around – who often just seem to be rehashing a 70s vibe. Instead, these guys are really trying to find their own sound – sometimes by using a bit of dub or other effects – but never in a way that's overdone, or gets in the way of the acoustic musical elements at their roots. All tracks are instrumental, and were performed live for the recording – and titles include "Return Of The March", "Touring Van", "Another Grain Of Sand", "Runnin For The Ghost", "Seeing The Bigger Picture", and "Van Chatter". Budos BandBudos Band 2 ... CD
Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". CD

Stanley ClarkeStanley Clarke – The Definitive Collection ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $11.99
Stanley Clarke's a bassist who first got his start in the headier side of the jazz spectrum in the 70s – but by the second half of that decade, he'd transformed into something else completely – a fantastic musician who could effortlessly reach across soul, funk, and fusion – combining all the best elements into an incredible sound that was all his own! Clarke's part of a generation that might include artists like Norman Connors, George Duke, and Mtume – all artists who might have been straighter jazz had they worked in the 60s, but who really flowered in the new freedoms of the 70s – as they hit superstardom with music like this. Duke and Clarke often collaborated – and you'll hear a good deal of that work on this set – which also includes work with Howard Hewett, Herbie Hancock, and Fuse One – plus lots of Stanley Clarke solo tracks too. 2CD set features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Concerto For Jazz Rock Orchestra", "Journey To Love", "Jamaican Boy", "Modern Man", "More Hot Fun", "The Dancer", "Silly Putty", "Heroes", "Straight To The Top", "Heaven Sent You", "We Supply", "Grand Prix", "Mothership Connection", "Funny How Time Flies", "Hideaway", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "What If I Should Fall In Love", "Time Exposure", "Sweet Baby", "Wild Dog", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Hot Fun". Nicola ConteOther Directions ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2004. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". Imagine the best work of Schema or Compost done in an all-organic, all-natural mode – and you've got the beautiful sound of this set! LP, Vinyl record album

Severn DardenSound Of My Own Voice ... LP
Mercury, 1961. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
From hipster comedian to schlocky roles in The Planet of The Apes, Severn Darden was one of the 60s more enigmatic performers. This early album has him doing intellectual standup and skits with the help of the Second City cast – including Alan Arkin, Paul Sand, and Barbara Harris. The stuff's a bit dated, but it has that nice pre-hippy early 60s intellectual camp sort of twist. LP, Vinyl record album

DonovanMellow Yellow ... LP
Epic, 1967. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Easily one of Donovan's most successful albums – but also a brilliant blend of folk and jazz that forged a bold new sound in the 60s! Part of the strength of the set comes from arranger John Cameron – an artist that we love for his jazz and easy work of the late 60s, and who's working here with players that include British jazzmen Phil Seamen, Tony Carr, Ronnie Ross, and Harold McNair! The instrumental component of the album alone is worth the price of admission – as Cameron gently blends together moddish and trippy styles, alongside some folksier vocals and guitar from Donovan. But it's also Donovan's own extrapolation of styles of the time that really makes the album a masterpiece – a strange post-folk mode of expression that's almost a British counterpart to the genius of Simon & Garfunkel, but which is arguably darker and more intellectual. Apart from classic hits like "Museum" and "Mellow Yellow", the album also features some moodier brilliance on tracks that include "The Observation", "Hampstead Incident", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer In The Sun", "Sand & Foam", and "House Of Jansch". Maybe the most underrated Dylan album, from a one time underrated period all together – which is rightly changing these days! Shot Of Love finds Dylan in the tail end of his most forthrightly spiritual era, but it's got more of a rock & soul vibe than the more polished couple records before it. Dylan on the road from the late 70s to early 80s – bringing words and wisdom that are more spiritually inspired than anything he'd put out before – backed by some of the most soulful arrangements and players he's ever had behind him! Trouble No More is all unreleased material and focuses on the live shows in support of what's since been dubbed Dylan's "Christian Period" – which is essentially true – and has long been ripe for a reassessment. The gravelly nature of his voice in the later years, which kind of begin here, gives it a really passionate vibe, while the bluesy soul arrangements and gospel style backing singers provide such a lovely backdrop. All tracks are previously unreleased, and captured live from throughout the 1979-1981 tours – with a few that were never on any Dylan studio albums at all, making the live recordings all the more vital! 4LP set (which comes with the full set on 2CDs, too) includes versions of "Slow Train Coming", "Gotta Serve Somebody","I Believe In You", "When You Gonna Wake Up?", "Gonna Change My Way Of Feeling", "In The Garden", "Every Grain Of Sand", "Previous Angel", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Saving Grace", the unheard and unreleased "Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody", "Ain't No Man Righteous" and "Blessed Is The Name". Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix ... CD

Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". There's a fair bit of classical numbers here, used as surprising vehicles for jazz expression by Hanna – not the usual "jazz meets classical" vibe that stays very faithful to the structure of the original compositions – but more just a basic inspiration for improvisational melodies, played by the trio in a way that has Roland's piano strongly out in the lead, with subtle accompaniment from Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums. The album was recorded in partnership with keyboardist Philippe Saisse, and definitely has the vibe of his own work of the time – recorded in New York, with guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – but still plenty of space for Hino to show off those soulful solo lines he first developed once he electrified his sound in the 70s! A beautiful 70s sound library album – and one that focuses strongly on the whistling talents of Alessandro Alessandroni! Make no mistake, this isn't the kind of cheesy whistling that you'd hear on midcentury pop singles – as Alessandroni first honed his craft on Italian western scores of the 60s, then went on to make great music of his own in a number of styles – all of which seem to come into play here, in a melange of mid 70s tracks that evoke spaghetti soundtracks, bossa elements, and even bits of jazz and funk – on a set of 15 short themes that really sound great together! Some titles have acoustic guitar in the mix, others have more electric instrumentation – and titles include "Tea Room", "Harlem Swing", "Marea", "Costa Azzurra", "Amore Mio", "Night Swing", "Ritratto", "Boy Scout", "Gianicolo", and "Aria Di Quartiere". An incredible jazz soundtrack from early 60s Italy – performed by saxophonist Sandro Brugnolini and his Modern Jazz Gang! The work's on a par with any of the great French jazz soundtracks of the late 50s – with a rich, evocative style of composition that takes the music far past its initial use in the film – and which makes the album itself an extremely compelling batch of tracks that works almost as a movie in sound! The solo performances are wonderful all around, and Brugnolini's alto and clarinet are joined by Cicci Santucci on trombone and Enzo Scoppa on tenor and flute – and as a special bonus, American jazz vocalist Helen Merrill sings on 3 of the album's best tracks. Titles include "Helen's Blues", "Infedeli", "Interlude In Jazz", "Portuense Cha Cha Cha", "Paolo In Love", and "Speak Only For You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 500 – on colored vinyl!)

Sandro Brugnolini/Stefano TorossiMusica Per Commenti Sonori ... CD
Carosello/Schema (Italy), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
An Italian funk double-header – a sweet little set from the end of the 60s, and one that features killer cuts from both Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi! We love either artist on their other own records, but there also seems to be something about putting them together here that makes them even better than before – certainly funkier, as the album's full of the kind of sharp, hard-grooving titles that first made us fall in love with sound library records in the first place! The date of the album's 1969, and both musicians make nice use of psych elements in their instrumentation – adding a bit of fuzz, wah-wah, or trippy guitar in just the right spaces – never going over the top, or getting too indulgent – but just moving in a groove that's tightly jazz funky at the bottom, and maybe a bit freaky at the top. Wonderful work throughout – and titles include "Sweet Beat", "Repetition", "Starter", and "Makkaresh" by Stefano Torossi – and "Wawa", "Motuproprio", "Polyphony", and "Flyer" by Sandro Brugnolini. CandidoThousand Finger Man ... CD
Solid State/Blue Note, 1969. Used ... $8.99
Stone lost Latin funk! This is Candido's rarest – and it's a killer batch of conga-heavy grooves, recorded in the late 60s for Solid State, and featuring a very groovy set of mod Latin arrangements by Joe Cain. The band features organ, guitar, bass, horns, and some upfront conga solos from Candido. Tracks are longer than usual for this sort of album – and there's a lot of strange elements floating through the tracks, in a very nice way! Titles include "Thousand Finger Man", which has some especially firey conga breakdowns, plus "Jump Back", "Soul Limbo", "Tony's Theme (from Lady In Cement)", and "Come On Choo Choo Train". CD

✨✧ ClashSandinista! ... CD
Epic, 1980. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Nat King ColeAt The Sands ... CD
Capitol, 1959/1960. Used ... $4.99
An important album by Nat King Cole – one that presented him in a live format, working in front of a very relaxed crowd at the Sands, expressing himself in a way that's quite different than some of his studio albums. The staid sound of Cole is opened up a bit here in the live set – a bit more relaxed, not necessarily improvised, but with a familiarity that shows Nat as more of an entertainer than you might expect. Titles include "Thou Swell", "Ballerina", "Funny (Not Much)", "I Wish You Love", "You Leave Me Breathless", and "Where Or When". CD
