Sam RiversReunion – Live In New York ... CD
PI Recordings, 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $16.99
An amazing reunion of a legendary group – the 70s free jazz trio of Sam Rivers on reeds, Dave Holland on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums! Rivers had already carved out a strong name for himself with earlier work – but his meeting with Holland and Altschul really helped the reedman take off – and together, the three musicians made some of the most creatively unbridled work of Sam's career! And yet the players hadn't worked together for over 25 years – until the time of this special recording, done as part of a Sam Rivers marathon at Columbia University – an amazing moment in jazz that has all three members of the group picking up beautifully, and improvising together in a long session of music that's simply mindblowing! The album's easily one of the best we've heard from Rivers in his later years – and has all the sort of soulful undercurrents that take us back to the 70s loft jazz years of the original group – sounding way more like some lost tapes from the old days than the reunion captured within. Genius – and a great treasure from the late Rivers! CD
(Case has some light wear and is priced accordingly.)

✨✧ Sam RiversPurple Violets ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2005. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Sam Rivers albums we've heard in years – a really compelling little set that has Sam playing in a relatively straight manner, and working alongside vibes-based Bryan Carrott trio! The mix of vibes, bass, and drums is a great accompaniment to Rivers' searching work on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and many of the tunes have a slightly modal approach that keeps things rhythmic, and which seems to deepen Rivers' sense of soul a bit more than usual. A few tracks go a bit out, but there's a nicely straight feel to most of the numbers – and titles include "Solace", "The Mooche", "In Search Of Black Benny", "Moderation", "Space", "Abalone", and "Captain America". ✨✧ Sam RiversCelebration ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A freewheeling trio set from reedman Sam Rivers – the kind of hard-burning, open-ended record he does so well! Rivers' energy here is amazing – a fire that hasn't dimmed since the start of the 70s, when he first started letting loose like this – and throughout the course of the album's space, Sam plays tenor, soprano sax, flute, and piano – in a trio with Doug Mathews on bass and bass clarinet, and Anthony Cole on drums, tenor, and piano. Given that both players move between rhythm instruments and horns, they've really got the right sort of dexterity to match Sam's efforts – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Commemoration", "Observance", "Dedication", "Effusion", "Appreciation", and "Currents". ✨✧ Sam RiversViolet Violets ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2005. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful follow-up to Sam Rivers Purple Violets album – and like that one, a record that has Rivers back at the top of his game, and sounding better than he has in years! The format for this set's a bit different – in that Sam's blowing in a sparer trio, with only bass and drums to support his work on flute open up a bit more on a few numbers, while nicely stepping back inside on others – mixing together the freedom of earlier years with a newfound soulfulness that really gives the album a lot of depth. Titles include "Nature Calls", "Chianti Blues", "Lace", "No Time Toulouse", "Invisible", "I Forgot To Remember", and "Horatio". CD

✨✧ Sam Rivers/Dave Holland/Barry AltschulRicochet – Sam Rivers Archive Project Vol 3 ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A searing live performance from Sam Rivers – never issued before, and recorded as one non-stop improvisation with a really amazing trio! Rivers plays tenor, soprano, flute, and piano – and the record is a great example of the constantly creative energy that he can bring to the fold – especially when working with Dave Holland on bass and Barry Altschul on drums – two players we've always loved, but who we're still blown away with in the company of the leader! The energy here matches classic 70s Rivers records on Impulse and Horo – and the single long improvisation, titled "Ricochet", runs for 52 minutes in length. CD

✨✧ Music Revelation EnsembleIn The Name Of ... CD
DIW/Columbia, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bold tones from the Music Revelation Ensemble – a group that's heavy on guitar work from James Blood Ulmer, but which also features some great guest reeds from Arthur Blythe, Sam Rivers, and Hamiett Bluiett! The core trio features Amin Ali on electric bass and Cornell Rochester on drums – moving in somewhat harmelodic formation – echoing Ulmer's styles of the decade before, but perhaps pushing his sound with a more forceful feel, possibly to showcase his crossing over to bigger audiences at the time. But the real charm here is the reed work – contributions that include alto from Blythe, baritone from Bluiett, and either soprano, tenor, or flute from Rivers – players that are heard separately from track to track, but who really help bring a deeper sense of spirit to the record. Titles include "The Dawn", "Mankind", "Purity", "Abundance", "In Time", and "Non-Believer". CD

Chet BakerIt Could Happen To You – Chet Baker Sings ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... $4.99
One of Chet Baker's most classic albums of the 50s – a record that features both vocals and strong trumpet solos – all from a time when Baker was one of the hottest things going in jazz! The album's different from records from previous years, in that it moves Baker from LA to New York – where he works with a great quartet that features Kenny Drew on piano, George Morrow or Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe Jones or Danny Richmond on drums – all players who have a slightly different approach than some of Baker's compatriots on Pacific Jazz sessions, which also seems to bring out a bit more bite in Chet too. Tracks are still shortish, with those breathy Baker vocals we love so much, balanced with really well-crafted trumpet solos – and titles include "It Could Happen To You", "Do It The Hard Way", "Old Devil Moon", "Dancing On The Ceiling", and "The More I See You". CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

✨✧ Bill EvansEverybody Digs Bill Evans (plus bonus track) (Keepnews collection) ... CD
Riverside, 1958. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Evans is at the peak of his early powers here – working with a straightforward rhythm combo that features Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but still hitting those beautifully fluid, beautifully spacious lines that set his playing apart from most who'd come before him. Tracks include 3 solo numbers – "Lucky To Be Me", "Peace Piece", and the very short "Epilogue" – plus trio tracks "Night & Day", "Minority", "Tenderly", and "Oleo". CD features 1 bonus track – "Some Other Time". CD

Bobby TimmonsBorn To Be Blue ... CD
Riverside/OJC, Early 60s. Used ... $19.99
One of Bobby Timmons' most obscure trio sessions from the early years – recorded at the tail end of the Riverside years, which is probably why the album disappeared so quickly! The set's in a similar format to some of Bobby's other records for Riverside – a trio set with either Sam Jones or Ron Carter on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – but it's different in that Bobby's a bit more introspective – "blue", if you will – working in less of the gutbucket soul jazz mode than before, and really hitting some lyrical magic on the keys! The album includes the original tunes "Know Not One", "Often Annie", and "The Sit In" – plus a great reading of Tom McIntosh's "Malice Towards None". CD

Bobby TimmonsThis Here Is Bobby Timmons (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1960. Used ... $19.99 24.99
Fantastic early work from pianist Bobby Timmons – a set that shows all the brilliant young genius that marked his playing at the time! Although only a trio session, the album grooves with the best sort of vibe that you'd find in Bobby's recordings with Art Blakey or Cannonball Adderley – probably because of the excellent rhythm accompaniment by Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb, who really make the album cook with a tremendous amount of energy! The set list is virtually the Bobby Timmons songbook, and includes classics like "This Here", "Dat Dere", "Moanin", and others – all done in lively soul jazz trio versions different than the famous renditions you probably already know! ✨✧ Nat Adderley & The Big Sax SectionThat's Right! ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nat's trumpet is backed up by the "big sax section" here – a trio of reed players that includes Yusef Lateef, Jimmy Heath, and Charlie Rouse, plus some additional baritone work by Tate Houston. The groove's pretty swinging – kind of in the mode of early work with Cannonball Adderley in that it's not as "in the pocket" soul jazz wise, but still quite strong overall. Heath and Jimmy Jones did the arrangements, and the rhythm section features Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Jimmy Cobb. Tracks include "Tadd", "The Old Country", "Chordnation", and "ESP". CD

✨✧ Donald Byrd & Pepper AdamsMotor City Scene ... CD
Bethlehem/Rhino, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most hard-hitting sessions ever recorded for the Bethlehem label – and a rare date for the imprint by the team of trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Pepper Adams! The style here is similar to work the pair recorded for Riverside and Blue Note at the same time – razor-sharp hardbop, played with a strong sense of imagination, and plenty of room for drawn-out, creatively-blown solos. Adams is especially great – playing the baritone here with the leanness of a tenor sax – but Byrd is wonderful too, and really starts to break out of some of the more staid modes of his work from a few years back. The group's a sextet that includes guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer "Hey" Lewis (another name for Louis Hayes?) – on titles that include "Trio", "Philson", "Libeccio", and "Bitty Ditty". ✨✧ Wes MontgomeryBoss Guitar (with bonus tracks) (OJC Remasters) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early greatness from Wes Montgomery – and a session that's got a gritty edge that takes Wes back to his Indianapolis roots! The album's one of the few of the time to feature the unsung Hammond hero Mel Rhyne – a player who worked with Wes at his start, but has only gotten stronger acclaim in recent decades as part of his comeback. Rhyne's a key force in the record – working alongside Montgomery's guitar and the drums of Jimmy Cobb – in a loose, open trio that has Mel participating as strongly in the rhythms as he does in the solo side of the album. Titles include a few Montgomery originals – "The Trick Bag" and "Fried Pies" – plus the tunes "Besame Mucho", "Dearly Beloved", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Canadian Sunset", "The Breeze & I", and "For Heaven's Sake". CD includes bonus tracks "Besame Mucho (take 2)", "Trick Bag (take 6)", and "Fried Pies (take 1)". CD

✨✧ Bobby TimmonsSweet & Soulful Sounds ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful mellow trio session from Bobby Timmons – done with a spare, relaxed approach that's a nice contrast to the recordings he was making for Prestige around the same time – but which still has the same deep, soulful approach to the piano that makes those records so great! Half a dozen trio numbers with Sam Jones and Roy McCurdy are rounded out with two piano solos, "God Bless The Child" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" – both of which present Bobby in an especially introspective mode, one you don't hear that often on record! Remaining trio tunes include "The Sweetest Sounds", "Turn Left", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Another Live One", "Alone Together" and "Why Was I Born". CD

✨✧ James Clay & David Fathead NewmanSound Of The Wide Open Spaces ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Texas tenors locked in hard formation! The set's a wonderfully stripped-down set that has James Clay and David Fathead Newman playing head-to-head in a rootsy Texas tenor style jazz session – one that's a bit more open-ended and earthy than some of the faker tones on Newman's early work for Atlantic! The setting is nicely relaxed – New York blowing session, taken down south – and rhythm is from a trio that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Tracks are long, with lots of focus on the solos – and the set includes two hip compositions by Babs Gonzales – "Wide Open Spaces" and "Figger-ation" – plus the titles "Some Kinda Mean", "What's New", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". ✨✧ Bill EvansNew Jazz Conceptions ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bill Evans' first album as a leader – and a well-titled set that went onto transform the sound of the piano in jazz! The session isn't as lyrically free as some of Evans' later classics, but already has an undeniably fresh approach to the keys – one that's modern, yet never academic – fluid, but never flowery – pure genius of economy and understatement, while also at the same time opening bold new worlds in sound. The trio features drummer Paul Motian and bassist Teddy Kotick, and titles include the classics "Five" and "Waltz For Debby", the latter of which is performed solo by Evans – plus tracks that include "Displacement", "I Love You", "My Romance", "No Cover, No Minimum", and "Our Delight". ✨✧ Barry HarrisBarry Harris At The Jazz Workshop ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early genius from Barry Harris – a live date recorded at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop, and one that has him gently grooving in a mix of sharp edges and lyricism! In a world where many up and comers were tempted by the fruits of the soul jazz sound, Harris remains nicely true to himself – and plays here with a style that's almost introspective at times, certainly filled with the flowing modes of pianistic expression that would emerge in other players more strongly in years to come. The trio features Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums – and titles include "Curtain Call", "Lolita", and "Morning Coffee", plus jazz standards like "Woody N You", "Star Eyes", and "Moose The Mooche".
