Henry ManciniGunn . . . Number One! ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good ... $5.99
Nice 60s crime jazz from Mancini! Although Mancini's fame was made in the late 50s for his work on the classic Peter Gunn TV show, it's less known that he also did the score for the less-than-successful Peter Gunn film. Directed in 1967 by Blake Edwards, the film was a weak attempt to transfer the Gunn image to the big screen – but Mancini remained above the fray, as his solid scoring is just about the only thing we remember about the film today. The tracks include 60's remakes of some nice themes from the original show, plus a few other nice numbers thrown in for good measure. Recorded (as usual) in LA, with players like Bud Shank, Ray Brown, Plas Johnson, and Shelly Mann – and a set list that includes "Dreamsville", "Sky Watch", "A Bluish Bag", and "The Monkey Farm". Smoke DZA & Flying LotusFlying Objects ... LP
Smokers Club, 2023. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A set that's got Flying Lotus working in his best old school mode – that sharp yet sophisticated style that's opened so many doors for him in recent years on other projects – very nicely fitted here to deft lyrical contributions from Smoke DZA! The record's a short one, but not out of not trying – maybe more in that it's got a focus that doesn't obscure the energy at the core, even when there's a bit of space for guests who include Black Thought, Estelle, and Conway The Machine. Titles include "Spiritual", "Painted Houses", "Drug Trade", "Zelle Transfers", and "Harlem World 97" – and this vinyl pressing features both vocal and instrumental versions of all tracks. ✨✧ King CurtisSoul Serenade ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
King plays the "all time favorites" on his soulful tenor, including instrumental classics like "Wiggle Wobble", "Night Train", "Honky Tonk", "Soul Twist", "Watermelon Man", and "Swingin' Shepherd Blues". The real hit, though, is King's "Soul Serenade", which set the standard for soul sax instrumentals for the next 10 years! LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. Vinyl has some oxidation and plays with surface noise. Cvoer has some ringwear, yellowing from age, heavy wear and splitting at the spine, and some ink transfer in back.)

✨✧ Sarah VaughanNo Count Sarah (Trip) ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations! Despite that lack, though, the grooves are very much in the best Basie mode – full of soul and searing horn lines – at a level that makes the album one of Sarah's liveliest from the time! Players include Thad Jones and Joe Newman on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Frank Foster and Frank Wess on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar – and Ronnell Bright handles the piano, instead of Basie. Titles include "Darn That Dream", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Doodlin", "Just One Of Those Things", "No Count Blues", and "Missing You". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing on Trip. Cover has some ringwear, with a bit of reddish ink transfer in back.)

✨✧ Nancy SinatraSugar ... LP
Reprise, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Though one of her groovy Hazlewood produced albums, she only does two Hazlewood-penned tunes on this one: "Coastin", and "Sugar Town". The rest of the songs are the old-timey standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Vagabond Shoes", "Let's Fall In Love", "Oh! You Beautiful Doll" and "Hard Hearted Hannah", though you might not guess that from the hot front cover featuring Nancy posing in a mod pink bikini. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SlintSpiderland (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Touch & Go, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The seminal second album from Slint, and the group's swan song too – yet a record that would go on to have a huge impact for years to come, virtually setting the tone for many other 90s projects from a variety of other scenes! The Louisville quartet really knock it out of the park here – refining their instrumentation, and honing things to a level that really makes great use of some of the longer spaces on the album to serve up instrumental complexity with a level that almost seems effortless – on titles that include "Don Aman", "Washer", "Good Morning Captain", "Breadcrumb Trail", "Nosferatu Man", and "For Dinner". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyLush Side Of Cannonball ... LP
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he later became – but it's also a great chance to hear Adderley working his horn in a style that doesn't show up much in later years. Hayman's orchestrations are less challenging than some of the Verve "with strings" sessions – but the overall work is solid, and the album's a dreamy mix of tracks like "I Cover The Waterfront", "Street Of Dreams", "You Are Too Beautiful", "Lonely Dreams", and "Two Sleepy People". ✨✧ LesimanHigh Tension Vol 1 ... LP
Vedette/Holy Basil (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sublime sound library work from Lesiman – one of the more obscure talents of the 70s scene, and one who really had an ear for mixing more dramatic and experimental elements with some mighty nice grooves! Lesiman, aka Paolo Renosto, was at one time a member of Gruppo d'Improvvisazione – and he uses his experience in that ensemble to create some really wild sounds at times, but also brings things back to groovier territory too – all with the sense of tension in the music you'd expect from the title! There's some especially nice metallic elements on the record at times – oddly-tuned vibes and offbeat piano – on titles that include "Panico", "Insidia", "Restless", "Reticolato", "Incubo Di Prigionia", "Cupa Atmosfera", "Sbarramento", and "Confine". LP, Vinyl record album
