✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Rockefeller label pressing, SD 8216. Cover has light wear and some tape on the seams. Label and back cover both have a small bit of marker.)

Atlantic, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Led Zeppelin at peak power – mixing hard rock bombast with deep, genuine love for blues and folk guitars! Houses Of The Holy is the essential the blueprint for countless imitators to come – but it's also got smarts, subtleties and creative ambitious that's just plain lost on the watered wannabes that floated up in Zeppelin's wake. Titles include "The Crunge", "Over The Hills & Far Away", "The Song Remains The Same", "The Rain Song", "Dancing Days", "Dyer Maker", "No Quarter", and "The Ocean". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most supremely classic of all classic hard rock albums! As huge as the debut was, Led Zeppelin II is the record that proved that the group were going to be in it for the long haul – with a righteous raw power that's still being felt all these many decades later! Nobody else could touch this one – and the album is filled with iconic cuts that include "Whole Lotta Love", "Ramble On", and"Heartbreaker" – plus the ridiculous Bonzo showcase "Moby Dick", and "Bring It On Home". Europe Jazz All Stars (Surman/Humair/Mangelsdorff/Louiss/Pedersen)Room 1220 ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
An overlooked performance by a quintet of avant jazz masters from the European scene at the start of the 70s – one that was recorded and issued only over in Japan, but which bristles with the energy of some of the best French and German avant albums of the time! The tracks are long, and relatively free – and feature this incredible lineup of John Surman on baritone, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Eddie Louiss on piano and organ, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – players who come together here with the kind of boundless surprises you'd imagine from their European recordings of the time – save maybe for Pedersen, who is surprisingly at home in this improvised setting! The cover makes the record feel like some lost gem on MPS – and the vibe is very much like the cream of that label's free jazz records of the time – with titles that include "Room 1220", "Triplet Circle", and "My Kind Of Beauty". FruuppWise As Wisdom – The Dawn Albums 1973 to 1975 (Future Legends/Seven Secrets/Prince Of Heaven's Eyes/Modern Masquerades/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Very unusual music from Fruupp – a group who issued these four albums on the always-unusual Dawn label – one of the most-trusted UK prog imprints of the early 70s! The sound of Fruupp is a bit hard to peg – as they're very proggy on their debut, but also clearly have a strong ear for more tuneful moments – almost like they've secretly got a few pop songs they're waiting for expose at the right time – although maybe that's just the production, because as things move on, the group more strongly embrace this vaguely medieval aesthetic, although again always with shorter tunes that feel like they could easily become hits in the right hands. Part of that quality is from the strength of the instrumentation, which really focuses the energy of the songs – even when the group is moving off into oboe or flute territory next to their guitars and keyboards. The box set features all four albums with original cover art – Future Legends, Seven Secrets, Prince Of Heaven's Eyes, and Modern Masquerades – plus the bonus tracks "Prince Of Heaven", "Jaunting Car", and "On A Clear Day". Leonard Simpson Duo (Guilty Simpson & Leonard Charles)LSD ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99
Brilliant stuff from the The Leonard Simpson Duo – with a moniker like a stripped down jazz combo but it's neo-classic, gritty Detroit hip hop all the way – thanks to bedrock rhymes by Guilty Simpson and perfectly suited production by Leonard Charles. As you probably gathered, the album title is a reference to the principal players as opposed to hallucinogens, this one is just tripped out enough – Guilty in laidback though rock solid for and New Zealand producer LC bring in headnodding beats, woozy organ, tight piano and more. Includes "My Inspiration", "Breaking Bread", "She's Got It", "GUILTY", "Friends", "Grass", "Nobody", "Heavy Organ" feat Wildchild, "Bricks", "Message To My Ex", "The GOAT" and "Smokin' Good". Jimmie Logsdon/Jimmie LloydI Got A Rocket In My Pocket – The Complete 50s Recordings ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
The complete works of Jimmie Logsdon – one of those 50s country singers who also recorded rockabilly material under a different name – working on some of these tracks as Jimmie Lloyd, and following a pattern that was similar to two-name recordings at the time by giants like George Jones or Webb Pierce! The package brings together singles recorded four Roulette and Decca – and actually maybe show Jimmie as an even better country singer than a rocker – given that most of the cuts here are in the former mode, and have a way of mixing together some of the best postwar hillbilly styles. Yet both together are pretty darn fantastic, and make for an overstuffed 29 track CD, complete with very detailed notes and history in the best Bear Family tradition – with titles that include "I Got A Rocket In My Pocket", "I'm Goin Back To Tennessee, "As Long As We're Together", "You're Gone Baby", "One Way Ticket To Nowhere", "That's When I'll Love You The Best", "Midnight Boogie", "My Sweet French Baby", and "Road Of Regret" – plus Hank Williams tribute tracks "The Death Of Hank Williams" and "Hank Williams Sings The Blues No More". Eddie PalmieriWisdom/Sabiduria ... LP
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 24.98
The genius of Eddie Palmieri never seems to dim at all as the years go on – and, if anything, the genius only seems to flower even more – finding new ways of expression that maybe even blow away some of Eddie's classic work from the 60s and 70s! This set is amazing – a fantastically modern refiguring of Latin roots – with elements that stretch back to Palmieri's earliest charanga years and his Latin jazz rebirth, but used in ways that are very different – and very striking throughout! The lineup remains relatively small on most numbers – with very heavy focus on piano, percussion, and bass – but Eddie also makes great use of key guests who include Alfredo De La Fe on violin, Donald Harrison on alto, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and Joe Locke on vibes. Titles include "Locked In", "Cuervas Y Tumbao", "Wise Bata Blues", "La Cancha", "Augustine Parish", "Life", "Samba Do Suenho", and "Jibarita Y Su Son". LP, Vinyl record album

Evan Parker & Matthew Wright + Trance MapCrepuscule In Nickelsdorf ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
A really unusual setting for the soprano saxophone talents of Evan Parker – and one that definitely unlocks some of the more textural shapesounds in his music! Parker works here alongside Matthew Wright on turntable and live sampling – and the Trance Map trio of Adam Linson, John Coxon, and Ashley Wales – who all add more electronics to the equation – at a level that balances out the spectrum with a huge amount of electric energy next to the acoustics of Parker's horn! Evan's always had a great ear for settings like this – maybe even more so than Anthony Braxton in his famous experiments of the 70s – and there's a building ferocity to the sound that's nicely punctuated by occasional more acoustic-styled tones from Parker. The set features one long live performance, almost an hour in length – divided up into seven segments. CD

Pharoah SandersVillage Of The Pharoahs/Wisdom Through Music ... CD
Impulse, 1973. Used ... $11.99
Great Pharoah Sanders albums from '73 – 2 in a single set! Village is an overlooked gem – one that has him breaking the pattern a bit, but in a really great way! The session mixes up more shorter songs than before – still all quite spiritual, but also a bit more focused – in a way that packs an incredible punch, even at more contemplative moments. Players include Sanders regulars – like Norman Connors on drums and Cecil McBee on bass – but also some key newcomers, like Art Webb on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, and Jimmy Hopps on drums – making one of his excellent Impulse appearances for the record. But perhaps even more striking are the vocals on the set – done often by Sedatrius Brown, who sings partially in a Leon Thomas spiritual mode – but also hits notes that are a bit earthier, and which are picked up in added vocalizations by members of the group. Sanders himself plays soprano and tenor sax – and titles include the expanded "Village Of The Pharoahs" suite, plus "Went Like It Came", "Memories Of Lee Morgan", "Myth", and "Mansion Worlds". Wisdom Through Music features soaring spirits and joyous jazz-based expression – another overlooked treasure from Sanders – and proof that his work on Impulse Records just kept on getting better and better! The style here is a bit tighter than some of the previous Impulse albums – no side-long tracks here – but the overall feel is also almost a bit more organic too – with lots of rootsy percussion and earthy sounds in the mix, all emanating from instruments in ways that are quite unique! The core group features Pharoah on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – alongside James Brance on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Norman Connors on drums – plus percussion from the trio of Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. Percussion bits and vocalizations drift in and out of most tracks – giving them a rich sense of color and tone, even when the grooves are a bit more direct! Titles include a shorter take on "Love is Everywhere", plus "The Golden Lamp", "Selflessness", "Wisdom Through Music", and "High Life". CD

Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 50.99
A searing live set from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – one of the few talents who could take his instrument into the kind of long-blown, beautifully open territory explored on a double length album like this! Tolliver maybe inherits a late Lee Morgan quality, but also opens up with the Woody Shaw generation – but at a level that's even more exploratory than Woody, and which follows up the fantastic sounds of his two part Live At Slugs albums, issued slightly earlier on the Strata East label! Strata is a name that's come to be synonymous with the best in spiritual jazz of the 70s – and Tolliver is the key figure at the top of that legacy – really making magic here in a quartet that includes John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alvin Queen on drums. Titles are all nice and long – and include "Grand Max", "Truth", "Prayer For Peace", "Our Second Father" and "Repetition". LP, Vinyl record album

Key musical figures in the Touareg independence movement – and a very hip group of nomads working with a lot of guitars! There's a laidback pulse to the music that might run counter to their political presence, but the music has a very hypnotic feel that pulls you in slowly, then doesn't let go – lots of interplay between the guitar lines, which are interwoven with vocals, and mixed with just a bit of percussion. A very cool record, and one that's a bit beyond easy description – recorded by a group that's led by Emil Mangelsdorff on alto and clarinet, and which features piano, soprano, and tenor from a young Joki Freund – plus work from Gustl Mayer on tenor, Fritz Hartschuch on vibes, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Volker Kriegel on guitar! Emil's got roots in more trad jazz styles, but there's something groovier and cooler going on here – especially with Freund and Kriegel in the mix, and the album's heavy use of vibes – all of which give the album a more mixed-up vibe that's very Saba/MPS! 12th Street/Koko (UK), 2001. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite moments from that great Andy Bey comeback in his later years – a time when the singer returned to recording after too much time away from the studio – and with a rich quality that offers a maturing version of the music he gave us in the 60s and 70s! At some level, Bey is a straighter jazz singer here – but he's also blessed with one of the most distinct vocal styles of anyone we can think of, and flows over the tunes with a majesty that's maybe only rivaled by Jon Lucien on his seminal recordings for RCA. The group is full of excellent players – Steve Turren on trombone, Marty Erlich on flute and bass clarinet, Peter Washington on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – plus piano from Andy himself. Titles include a great version of the Milton Nascimento tune "Bridges" – plus "Fragile", "I'll Remember April", "Tuesdays In Chinatown", "Feelin Low Down", "In A Mist", and "Saidas E Bandeiras". ✨✧ Gene ClarkGene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Retroworld (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic solo album from Gene Clark – his first effort after leaving The Byrds behind, and a really well-chosen collaboration with The Gosdin Brothers – who help Clark hit a lot more of a country vibe than he might have done otherwise! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of Gene's moody songwriting and vocal styles in the mix – but the Gosdin harmonies really help give the whole thing a special spin – maybe that mix of country roots and darkness that the Flying Burrito Brothers were about to unleash – yet given the world by Gene Clark a few years before! The whole thing's wonderful – as essential a piece of the LA country rock underground as any of Gram Parsons' albums – with titles that include "So You Could Say You Lost Your Baby", "Think I'm Gonna Feel Better", "Keep On Pushin", "Echoes", "Tried So Hard", "Elevator Operator", and "Couldn't Believe Her". Starday/Nashville, 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest entries in the Starday Records series of truck-themed collections in the 60s – partly because this one features material by just a small core of artists, and also because there's a fair bit of bluegrass in the mix as well! The tunes still have the truck-heavy tones of the other work of the time – but the vibe here is much more bluegrass than country (although we love country truck records too!) – and showcases some of the excellent artists who were being recorded by Starday at the time, with a very lean, respectful sound that holds up wonderfully over the years! Titles include "Truck Driver's Queen", "Hot Rod Kids & Women Drivers", "Truck Driver's Woman", and "Long White Line" by Moore & Napier; "Little Mountain Road", "Crossroads", and "Brand New Road" by Reno & Smiley; and "Gear Jammer" and "Truck Drivin Daddy" by Jimmy Logsdon. ✨✧ Shabaka & The AncestorsWisdom Of Elders ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic jazz group from the contemporary South African scene – one who've got a very righteous vibe, and a sound that's maybe even more far-reaching than any jazz we've heard from that scene back in the 60s or 70s! The group's led by Shabaka Hutchings on tenor, but is a very collaborative ensemble – with these tremendous upfront vocals from Siyabonga Mthembu, a singer with a very unique approach, and a spiritual current that we'd rank right up there with work by Leon Thomas, Dwight Trible, or Joe Lee Wilson, even though Mthembu's very much his own man. The group's also got two other great horn players – Mthunzi Mvubu on alto and Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet – plus Fender Rhodes and piano from Nduduzo Makhathini, and a wonderfully early array of bass, percussion, and drums – which lay down a fantastic groundwork for each tune. The music starts somewhere in the spiritual territory of the post-Coltrane scene – but really takes off immediately with its own individual spirit – ala Kamasai Washington – and the performance is live and unadorned, without some of the studio efforts that show up on other Brownswood label releases. Beautiful work throughout – an instant classic that we'd rank right up there with the best material by folks like Nat Birchall or Matthew Hallsall, but very different too. Titles include "Nguni", "Mzwandile", "Joyous", "The Sea", "The Observer", and "Give Thanks". LP, Vinyl record album

David AxelrodSong Of Innocence ... LP
Capitol/Now Again, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 27.98
One of a handful of amazing albums recorded by David Axelrod towards the end of the 60s – really stunning, genre-breaking music that was years ahead of its time – and which has only finally been getting its due in more recent decades! At the time of the record, Axelrod was a house producer at Capitol Records – where he'd created big hits for Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley – and he'd also been experimenting a bit with studio techniques for other rock groups. But here, the Axe brings all his experience into play – then sends things soaring to the skies – with music based on the work of poet William Blake, but delivered in this totally groovy west coast 60s mode. The core of the instrumentation features funky drums from Earl Palmer and bass from Carole Kaye – both of whom really keep things rock-solid amidst the larger mix of strings and instruments directed by the great Don Randi – who himself is pretty darn wonderful too. The music has nice snatches of fuzz and organ throughout – jazzy moments, funky passages, and lots more too – served up on tunes that include much-sampled song "Holy Thursday" – plus "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveler". William Blake never sounded so funky! LP, Vinyl record album

A classic-styled Brazilian live collaboration – a set with solo performances by each of the stars in the lead, and some great duet material together! The approach is one that's been used on Brazilian albums from the earliest records by Elis Regina and Jair Rodriguez – and it's still a fantastic way to present two strong singers in their best light – as Maria Bethania seems to hit a whole new level of warmth when singing alongside Zeca Pagodinho! Arrangements for Zeca's tracks are by Paulao De 7 Cordas, and Maria's are by Jaime Alem – and the set begins and ends with a number of duets, and features solo passages in the middle. Nat BirchallSounds Almighty ... LP
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $32.99
A very different album than usual from the great tenorist Nat Birchall – a set that's no less soulful than his other records, but in a completely different way! The album's a collaboration with producer Al Breadwinner – and has this approach that feels like a lost Jamaican instrumental session from the start of the 70s – as if Nat's playing the role of saxophonist Tommy McCook over some nicely laidback Kingston-styled rhythms! Birchall solos on tenor on most tracks, but also blows a bit of melodica too – and even handles a bit of organ and percussion too – all swept up in a dubby mix handled by Breadwinner, who contributes drums, guitars, and keyboards. There's a bit of trumpet and trombone on the set too, plus baritone sax from Stally – and the quality of the record is excellent, every bit up to the range of the Jamaican legends listed as inspiration on the cover – a lineup that includes McCook, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, and Cedric Brooks. Titles include "In The Hills", "Ancient Wisdom", "Youth Iron Rock", "Freedom Style", "Amlak Dub", "Hail Don D Jr", and "Igziabeher". LP, Vinyl record album

Nat BirchallSounds Almighty (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $15.99
Includes bonus tracks "Iron Rock Dub" and "Igziabeher Dub". CD

David Boykin & SebauLast Slave Movie/Which Side Are You On ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2018. Used ... $4.99
Maybe one of the most political projects we've ever heard from saxophonist David Boykin, and one of the most ambitious too – a jazz opera that deals with the recent struggles of black America in the face of increased police brutality – inspired by the tragic deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and others! The piece features vocals – both sung and rhymed, performed by a group that was put together especially for this event – with vocals from Rhonda Gray and Quenna Lene, plus Boykin himself – and rhymes from Manu Wisdom. Bokyin plays fantastic tenor throughout, alongside drums from Josh Ross and bass from Rollo Radford – and the mix of voice with this stripped-down lineup is incredibly powerful, with the best energy of an underground project like this from the 70s. The group also features a bit of turntable work from Abstract Black and some piano from Aliyyah Heatherington – and the whole thing was recorded live in concert, in late 2017. CD

One of Don Cherry's most hypnotic albums ever – a full album-length performance that features one of his first experiments with mixing jazz and global elements! The set was captured at the 1968 Berlin Jazz Festival – and mixes Cherry's amazing work on cornet, flute, and a myriad of world instruments with key contributions from European improvisers who include Eje Thelin on trombone, Bernt Rosengren on tenor and oboe, Karl Berger on vibes, Joachim Kuhn on piano and prepared piano, and Albert Mangelsdorf on trombone! There's even a bit of gamelon elements in some of the music, and Sonny Sharrock plays guitar too – and although free at times, the music comes together with an amazing sense of cohesion by the end – a vision that would inspire others to move into new territory in the decade to come. Alternative Fox (UK), 1967. New Copy ... About April 1, 2020 (delayed)
Four slices of genius from this important German jazz festival of the 60s – one of the leading showcases for the best in avant garde and experimental music! The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. Chocolate Buttermilk BandHead Games – The Story of Larry Akles & CBM Records ... LP
Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99
The overlooked legacy of the Chocolate Buttermilk Band – a long-running combo from the North Carolina scene – one who opened for or backed up some of the biggest soul artists to visit their state – then created some great music on their own! Make no mistake, these guys are way more than just a backing band – as their years of experience gave them some mighty sharp skills, with the kind of top-shelf large funk ensemble instrumentation that you'd expect to hear from a group on a much bigger label – not the kind who were releasing tracks on their own small imprint. The range of work here is also pretty great too – not just catchy funk tracks, but also some well-crafted mellower cuts and ballads thrown into the mix – really showing these guys as a fully-formed R&B act who might have broke bigger, had they gotten the chance. Titles include "Head Games", "Mr LSD", "Freaking", "Chills", "No Way", "Baby Don't Let Go", "Ain't No way", and "Can't Let Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Easily the hippest of the Clarke-Boland Big Band Records from the classic years – a set of hard grooving tracks that really pushes the envelope of their style! There's a few elements here that are different than usual – such as the presence of electric piano on a few tracks, which creates a very new sound for the group, the presence of some exotic jazz influences (perhaps borrowed from the MPS Jazz Meets The World series), and the use of some edgier compositions on the set, including work by late 60s European free-thinkers, like Eddie Louiss, Albert Mangelsdorff, and John Surman. The reed work is really incredible in this setting – and is handled by Sahib Shihab, Ronnie Scott, Billy Mitchell, and Derek Humble – all of whom seem to blow with inspiration from Surman – using tones that are far more out there than usual. Titles include "Exorcisme", "Sakara", "Our Kind Of Sabi", "Osaka Calling", "Wintersong", and "Astrorama". CD

✨✧ Tommy CollinsThis Is Tommy Collins/Words & Music Country Style ... CD
Capitol/Rural Routes, Mid 50s. Used ... $8.99
Two full albums from the many who was an important influence on California country giants Merle Haggard and Buck Owens! The first album is pure genius from the young Tommy Collins – an early figure on the Bakersfield scene, and an artist who almost single-handedly shaped the sound of the west coast scene with his Capitol Records material included here! Collins had a wonderful way of updating older hillbilly modes – traces of Texas and Arkansas, moved over to postwar Cali – where things got tightened up, became a bit more confident, and were given a razor-sharp sound by the excellent Capitol production. Every tune here is a classic – and many have a sense of double-entendre that rivals the hippest R&B work of the period, but with a very different sound overall – on titles that include "You Better Not Do That", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "It Tickles", "You Gotta Have A License", "Smooth Sailin", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Now". Words & Music Country Style features the wit, wisdom, and wild twang of the great Tommy Collins – brought together in a killer collection of early work for Capitol! The music here is the ultimate peak of the hillbilly generation – not the codified country of the Nashville scene to come, but much more rough-edged and wooley – with more than a few elements that could influence the sound of rock and roll as well! Titles include "The Feet Of The Traveler", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "Think It Over Boys", "Are You Ready To Go", and "All Of The Monkeys Ain't In The Zoo". CD

The excellent (and under-rated) Barbara Thompson plays some flute, alto, and soprano sax on the set – and titles include "Three Score & Ten Amen", "Time Lament", "Take Me Back To Doomsday", "Theme For An Imaginary Western", "Bring Out Your Dead", and "The Daughter Of Time". Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Warner/Real Gone, Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99 26.98
Three great albums from Alice Coltrane – all late 70s albums for Warner Brothers that really show her taking off as both a solo performer and a spiritual force! First up is Eternity – seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". Radha Krsna Nama Saknirtana is pure spiritual loveliness from Alice, and a record that features a lot of additional playing by Indian musicians! Clearly, the Hari Krishnas have gotten to the lady here – as you can tell by the orange robe she's wearing on the cover, and the blank stare in her eyes – but that doesn't stop the album from being a nice one, filled with the soaring spiritualism of her best 70s work, and infused with a cross-cultural approach to jazz that makes for a wonderfully expansive sound. Tracks include "Om Namah Sivaya", "Hare Krishna", and "Govinda Jai Jai". Transcendence is a beautiful record from Alice Coltrane – a swirling mix of spiritual jazz and themes from Indian music! Alice plays organ, Fender Rhodes, and harp – building the sound as the album progresses, from simple airy strings to an earthier groove that features vocal refrains in unison with the keyboards, chanting away, over and over, stretching to the heavens in a cosmic groove! The record features a lot of variations on traditional Indian themes – including "Sivaya", "Ghana Nila", and "Bhaja Govindam" – plus the original tracks "Transcendence" and "Vrindavana Sanchara". CD

✨✧ Miles DavisMiles Davis At Fillmore – Live At Fillmore East ... CD
Columbia, 1970. Used 2CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Four sides of long improvised grooves from Miles Davis – a set that's quite similar to the classic studio album Bitches Brew, but which captures the sound in more open live setting! Each track on each side is named "Wednesday Miles", "Thursday Miles", and so on – after the night it was recorded – and is one of the few documents of the Miles electric group that features Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Grossman on saxes, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion. The work is more inside than some of the Davis Japanese sessions of the time, but no less revolutionary – really opening up in some wonderful ways – with lots of spacious modal riffing over some heavy vamps. Groovy and quite free at the same time, but not nearly as out as the later electric recordings! CD

Okka Disk, 1996. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A classic pairing of two of the most important percussionists on the Chicago avant scene of the 90s – Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang, both musicians with a very different sound and style – but whose contributions to the Okka Disk label alone are more than enough to warrant them pages in the history book of Windy City jazz! Both musicians really open up here on a fantastic range of percussive elements – standard drums, plus bells, tablas, gongs, didjeridoo, cymbals, shakers, congas, and frame drums – handled in these open, organic ways that are very different than some of the accompaniment that both Drake and Zerang were giving horn players, maybe more of a loft jazz mode, but also with ties to the early AACM. The record also features a bit of guest work – Ashik Altany on zurma and Eddie Zerang on djembe – on titles that include "The Wisdom Sisters", "River Dance", "Children Of Clark Street", "Dreaming Of Winter", "Zikr Of The Heart", and "The Black Basement". John FaheyVoice Of The Turtle (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Takoma/4 Men With Beards, 1968. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 23.98
A tremendous early statement from the great guitarist John Fahey – and a record that has all his best ideas coming into really sharp focus! Fahey was a very collaborative person right from the start – even as a record collector, before his own recordings – and that spirit is felt here on some of the duet tracks, in which John and associates perform these acoustic instrumental tunes that plumb the past of underground America, but turn it out again into something completely new and fresh – not folk revial, but more a reworked fantasy of the nation, almost as a refuge for the changes of the late 60s. The sound is beautiful – with a flute accompaniment here, a bit of fiddle there, and even Fahey duetting with himself on guitar – thanks to the magic of overdub. As usual with these early Takoma records, the style is very fluid – sometimes very tied to the 78rpm generation, but other points much more towards the freewheeling guitar introspection of some of Fahey's underground contemporaries. The overall sound is amazing, too – as Fahey almost uses the studio as an additional instrument, but in very subtle ways. Titles include "Bottleneck Blues", "Bill Cheatum", "Lewisdale Blues", "Bean Vine Blues", "A Raga Called Pat (part 3)", "A Raga Called Pat Part IV", "Train", "Je Ne Me Suis Reveillais Matin Pas En May", "The Story Of Dorothy Gooch (part 1)", "Nine Pound Hammer", and "Lonesome Valley". Squama (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99
An unusual mix of jazz and funk – done at a level that's not entirely either style, and which maybe has more of the forward-thinking elements of some of the recent London scene! No surprise, the set was recorded in that city – by Benedic Lamdin, whose name has been on many groundbreaking records over the past decade or more – and that really adds to the special sonic quality the group get from their mix of guitar, trumpet, bass, and double drums! The guitar often fills in spaces that might normally be the territory of a keyboard – and the double drums are used in ways that are sometimes spacious, and not nearly as overwhelming as you might expect – almost an Afro Funk pulse, but turned down a few notches. Titles include "Jetty", "Harlesden", "Pop Up", "Atuo", "Blitzer", and "Lina". CD

Pronit/GAD (Poland), 1971. New Copy ... $16.99
Killer Hammond from Polish player Piotr Figiel – a player with a really wonderful sort of groove! The album's got a vibe that's halfway between the Hammond antics of Alan Hawkshaw and the freer lines of American jazzmen like Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland – augmented by other cool production touches at points, which gives the record a very groovy late 60s sort of Euro feel! The vocal group Bemibek sing these cool wordless vocals on the tune "Bit Of Spring Bit Of Summer" – and guitarist Dariusz Kozakiewicz adds a nice degree of fuzz to a few other tunes too – tripping out nicely with Piotr's very fluid lines on the Hammond! There's a bit of strings on a few numbers, bringing in a nice cinematic feel – and titles include "Prelude In E Minor", based on the same Chopin changes as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B" – plus "Never On Tuesday", "Breakfast At Midnight", "Away I'll Go", "Absence", and "Piece Of Space". A mindblowing collaboration between The Heliocentrics and underground film legend Melvin Van Peebles – a set that has the group serving up some madly trippy grooves, while Melvin speaks and sings some wisdom of his own! Van Peebles already blew our minds years ago with his insane soundtrack to Sweet Sweetback's Baaaadasss Song – still one of our favorite records of all times – and The Heliocentrics follow in the odd spirit of that gem, by mixing lots of sounds and styles together in a mad cacophony of music – then leaving just the right amount of space for Melvin to come into the mix! A great session that was recorded by Freddie Hubbard in the 60s, but not issued by Blue Note until the mid 70s – and only then as part of a short-lived double length set! This version is the first real issue of the material – with the original cover art intended for the session in the 60s – and as such, it's presented in a way that helps it stand strongly with Freddie's best early albums for Blue Note! The sound here is sharp-edged and soulful – a reflection of the groove that Freddie was hitting in the Jazz Messengers of the early 60s, played by a group that features three members of that ensemble – Wayne Shorter on tenor, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass – along with Philly Joe Jones on drums! Tracks are hard, straight, and soulful – not bogged down in some of Hubbard's misdirected modernism – and titles include "Philly Mignon", "Father & Son", "Nostrand & Fulton", and "Assunta". CD

George JonesStill The Same Old Me/First Time Live/One Woman Man/Friends In High Places ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four later albums from the great George Jones – packed together in a 2CD set! First up is Still The Same Ole Me – and on the set, George Jones is still definitely the same old me – even if his voice has aged and changed over the years! The album's got some great songs that really hit the more heartbreaking side of the Jones spectrum – which was always his best in later years – and titles include "Couldn't Love Have Picked A Better Time To Die", "Daddy Come Home", "Good Ones & Bad Ones", "You Can't Get The Hell Out Of Texas", "Same Ole Me", and "Together Alone". First Time Live is maybe one of the best George Jones albums of the 80s – a live set, and one that's got this easygoing charm that really holds the whole thing together! Backings are by The Jones Boys, who work perfectly with George – giving him support that feels relaxed and more spontaneous than some of his studio work of the time. Titles include "Tennessee Whiskey", "Fox On The Run", "I'm Not Ready Yet", "Who's Gonna Chop My Baby's Kindling", and "He Stopped Loving Her Today". One Woman Man is an overlooked gem from the end of the 80s – a set that has George hitting some of the vocal moments of his 70s classics, in a mix of tunes that really open up his charms. Titles include "I'm A One Woman Man", "Don't You Ever Get Tired", "Burning Bridges", "Pretty Little Lady From Beaumont Texas", "A Place In The Country", and "Just Out Of Reach". Friends In High Places is a set of duets with some of George's contemporaries, and a whole host of younger talents he inspired – a lineup of guests that includes Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Randy Travis, Vern Gosdin, Tim Mensy, Ricky Scaggs, and others – on titles that include "A Few Ole Country Boys", "Love's Gonna Live Here", "If I Could Bottle This Up", "I've Been There", "It Hurts As Much In Texas", and "You Can't Do Wrong & Get By". Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $21.99 23.98
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Includes "89", "Real S**t", "Black Thursday", "Follow Me", "Mula", "10 Yas", "Identity", "God" & "Babalyon". LP, Vinyl record album

Kendrick LamarUntitled Unmastered ... LP
Interscope, 2016. New Copy ... $24.99 25.99
Untitled Unmastered, though masterful material from Kendrick Lamar – another great stride in his astonishing mid teens creative win streak– a low key and low stakes release compared to the huge platform for To Pimp A Butterfly, but damn, it sure does resonate with a similar haze of gritty wisdom, soulful integrity, and fearless social commentary. It includes 8 untitled tracks, subtitled with the recording date, most from 2013 and 2014, so it's fair to assume it's workshop material from around the time TPAB was coming to fruition – but it would NOT be fair to dismiss the tracks as mere demos and building blocks, it's powerful stuff, worthy of his legacy. Hans KollerHans Koller's New Jazz Stars (10 inch LP) ... LP
Vogue (France), 1953. Near Mint- ... $18.99
During the immediate postwar years, Hans Koller was one of the first European jazz artists to emerge with a talent rich enough to challenge his older American counterparts. He was extremely fortunate to have made a number of recordings during the 50s, but most of them have been out of print for quite some time. This great little 10" features one great session – featuring Koller next to other great German players like Jutta Hipp and Albert Manglesdorf, in a tight quintet session that has a nice hard simple groove. Koller's tenor has a sharp crisp quality that works well next to Hipp's warmer piano stylings – and the set features some nice tracks like "Unter Den Linden", "Four Roses In An Iceblock", and a great version of "All The Things You Are". Hans Koller, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, & OthersInternational Jazz Workshop ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $16.99
A great one – and the kind of European jazz album that kicks like a Clarke/Boland Big Band album! Hans Koller directs a large-scale swinging big band of some of the best European and American expatriot players of the time – like Sahib Shihab, Benny Bailey, Donald Byrd, Johnny Griffin, and Albert Mangelsdorff – and the set screams with intense solos, and a tight groove that pushes past any of the cliches you could imagine for a set like this. One of the things that makes the session great is some groovy organ, played by Infried Hoffman, the German player who was in Klaus Doldinger's early group. Doldinger's also on here, and his sound is way better than on his 70's work. Titles include "Hip Hit", "Revelation", "Conversation", "Knodel-Waltzer", and "Blazy Bones Revisited". Joe McPhee & Mats GustafssonBrace For Impact (with bonus track) ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2007. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
The first-ever album of studio duets between Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson – quite a surprise, given how often their paths have crossed over the years! The set was recorded in 2007, but only issued many years later – and it's a key document of the power that both improvisers have at this point in their career – each receiving strong global attention and facing new discovery by audiences nobody would have expected to be there for free jazz in the new millennium – but also able to completely put aside their egos and work together with the kind of sensitive interplay that only comes when you've got two masters in a rare moment like this. Sonically, the whole thing is very textural – maybe initially informed by that style that Gustafsson has of exploring all the outer reaches of a saxophone, from the tip of the reed right down to the surface of the pads – as he blows baritone, slide sax, and alto fluteophone – and McPhee works on pocket trumpet, alto, and alto clarinet. Titles include "Suicide Chicken Wings Over Nickelsdorf", "Bat Cave Feast", "Just Blue", "Just Green", "Race Matters", and "Blame Game". CD

A classic double-length set from folk rock crossover giant Melanie – a special package that features material from some of her previous Buddah albums, mixed with some new material too! The record features four different sides of the singer's talents – her formative years, her hits, her interpretations of other folks' songs, and a "wonderland" side of imaginative material – which includes some surprising message-oriented tracks! Instrumentation is great – often fuller orchestrations used gently next to Melanie's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – and titles include "Lay Down", "What Have They Done To My Song Ma", "I Really Loved Harold", "Johnny Boy", "Ruby Tuesday", "I'm Back In Town", "Any Boy", "Nickel Song", "Sign On The Window", "Christopher Robin", "Psychotherapy", "Leftover Wine", and "I Don't Eat Animals". Really great work from a Brazilian combo that somehow manages to work in a mode that's completely rootsy, but also completely contemporary too! The music here mixes together heavy percussion, bits of jazz, and just the right touches on keyboards, beats, and samples – so that the organic and electric elements are perfectly balanced – at a level that's wonderfully illuminating, and which shifts nicely from track to track on the album – partly because of some of the guests who appear throughout. Titles include "Khamisi", "O Mar", "Mr Cal", "For You", "James Bongo", "Blue Skies", "Afroonirico", "Suco De Acerola", "Samambaia Rainha", and "Down". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Mingus' classic sessions from the middle period – a legendary blending of jazz with bluesy gospel touches, in a mode that seemed to move away from the politics of some of the late 50s years, and open up his work to a whole new audience! The band is an all-star ensemble all the way through – tentet that features Jackie McLean, Booker Ervin, John Handy, Pepper Adams, Jimmy Knepper, Willie Dennis, and Horace Parlan – cutting a line perfectly with Mingus on the album's 6 original tunes. Atlantic, 1960. Used ... $6.99
A searing live set by Charles Mingus – a double-length performance recorded in Antibes during his classic years for Atlantic Records, but not issued by the label until many years later! The album's a great extrapolation of the sound that Mingus had forged on sessions for Columbia, Atlantic, and Candid – the latter label especially, as the tunes here are all quite long, and really put a lot of emphasis on the solo voices of the players in the group. Given that those players include Ted Curson on trumpet, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Eric Dolphy on alto sax, the sound here is proud and loud throughout – with plenty of fire from all three horns! Bud Powell makes a guest appearance on the set – and titles include "Prayer For Passive Resistance", "What Love", "I'll Remember April", "Folk Forms 1", and "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". CD

Paul MotianTribute ... LP
ECM, 1975. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A great statement as a leader from drummer Paul Motian – a player that none would have expected to be hitting this territory in the decade before – the start of a great run of records that continued his break from more familiar rhythmic territory! The record's got a very strong ECM vibe, but also maybe a bit more bite, too – as the bass work of Charlie Haden is balanced by sharper sounds from Carlos Ward on alto sax – who really gets plenty of space to dominate the proceedings, with this open soulfulness that really adds a lot to the record. The set's also got twin guitars from Paul Metzke and Sam Brown, which makes for a great approach – especially as Brown moves between acoustic and electric. Titles include a beautiful reading of Haden's "Song For Che" – plus "Victoria", "Tuesday Ends Saturday", "War Orphans", and "Sod House". LP, Vinyl record album

We're not sure we've ever heard from bassist Miles Perkin before, but after this album we'll definitely be keeping an ear out for his music – as the whole thing has a wonderfully fresh, wonderfully vibrant sort of sound – Miles' strong lines on the bass really working magic with a quartet that includes Tom Arthurs on trumpet, Benoit Delbecq on piano, and Jim Black on the drums! The vibe of the music is a bit hard to convey in words – as there's plenty of space for the bass right up front in the mix, but the music is never too airy or quiet either – just the right balance with a group flow that really comes along nicely – structure matched with improvisation, on titles that include "Sdreaming", "What Did You Expect", "The Point In Question", "Blue Cloud", and "Sea Drop". PrincePiano & A Microphone ... CD
Warner, 1983. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A fantastic musical gift from beyond – early 80s recordings by Prince, and the sort of work that might have been a huge revelation if it were issued during his too-short career! As the title implies, the set just features the man himself at the piano – singing and playing with a very intimate vibe – completely unlike any of his 80s material at all, even though some of the songs are the same! Prince is fantastic at the keys – really compelling and inspirational – with a sense of feeling that opens up some of his jazz chops in a way we never would have expected – and which is then matched by a more freewheeling sense of vocalization – with these fantastic inflections that leave us breathless, but again in a completely different way than his other music. The first half of the set features Prince flowing through songs that include "17 Days", "Purple Rain", "Mary Don't You Weep", "A Case Of You", "International Lover", "Wednesday", and "Strange Relationship" – and the second half features the songs "Why The Butterflies" and "Cold Coffee & Cocaine". Don Rendell/Ian Carr QuintetChange Is (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Jazzman (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
Change is certainly in the air for the famous group of tenorist Don Rendell and trumpeter Ian Carr – partly because this final set has some slight shifts in personnel, and partly because a few elements point the way towards new directions that Carr would take in the 70s! The core energy of the group is still beautifully intact – and most tunes still feature strong piano work from Michael Garrick, alongside the fantastic drums of Trevor Tompkins and bass of Dave Green – but there's also a point when Jeff Clyne comes in for a second bass, Guy Warren adds some percussion, and Stan Robinson brings in both added tenor and clarinet! None of the music is as electric as Carr's later Nucleus group, but you can definitely hear the door opening for new ideas – while the duo still continue that fantastic blend of modern moments and soulful swing that mark their seminal late 60s albums in the Lansdowne Series. Titles include "Elastic Dream", "Boy Dog & Carrot", "One Green Eye", "Cold Mountain", and "Black Hair". LP, Vinyl record album

Our favorite of Wanda's LPs for Perception! The record features Wanda's hip righteous poetry, in the same tradition of Camille Yarborough, plus a strong funky backing laid down by Julius Brockington and the United Chair. The record is an incredibly soulful one – the kind of underground wisdom and knowledge project that rarely gets made in the record industry today. Sussex/Universal, 1971. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
An amazing second set from Sixto Rodriguez – recorded in the legendary Landsdowne Studios in London, with a groove that's a great extension from his debut! All of Rodriguez's best elements are in place here – his folksy guitar, personal lyrical style, and surprisingly biting approach to a variety of topics – and the London setting provides him with an even more sophisticated backdrop than before, one that creates a rich palette of sounds that takes the music in some really wonderful directions! There's a bit of strings at times, but most instrumentation is by a small combo – which includes Chris Spedding on guitar and Tony Carr on percussion – so that Rodriguez's vocals and guitar are really right up front in the mix, recorded with a brilliant balance between sharpness and compassion. Titles include "Climb Up On My Music", "Silver Words", "Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour", "I Think Of You", "To Whom It May Concern", "Halfway Up The Stairs", and "Cause". 2019 CD version includes the bonus tracks "Can't Get Away", "Street Boy" and "I'll Slip Away". San Sebastian Strings/Rod McKuen/Anita KerrFor Lovers ... LP
Reprise, 1969. Near Mint- ... $1.99
An amazing document of adult love – as important to the easy generation as Barry White's work was to the soul crowd – and the kind of record that makes you willing to throw away all your prejudices about Rod McKuen! The set's got a simple, snakey sort of approach – one that uses electric bass underneath light string arrangements by Anita Kerr – in a way that has the same sexy, slinky appeal as some of the best mellow easy from the end of the 60s – that period when the genre had firmly shaken off the mood music audience of housewives, and was hitting a younger, lustier crowd on the FM airwaves. There's a compressed perfection to this album that's beyond belief – not just in Kerr's sublime arrangements, but also in the incredible interpretation of McKuen's writings by Joey Benson – spoken into the microphone in a way that makes a simple whisper speak volumes, and which has this breathy, Bacharach-era brilliance that's dripping with mature sexuality. McKuen's words are presented beautifully by Benson – given just the right pauses, phrasing, and power to unlock a playfully illustrative sense that doesn't always come through in other collaborations with Anita Kerr. A real lost treasure – the kind of record we never expected we'd ever like at all – but which has held us rapt with its brilliance – almost a Scott Walker for the American easy crowd of the late 60s! Titles include "Foreign Movies", "Why I Follow The Tigers", "Love Hasn't Any Windows", "Make A Bigger Circle With A Softer Touch", "For Lovers", "No Loving Without Losing", and "Looking Up Through Wednesday's Silence". Jack SelsJack Sels – Minor Works ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Tenorist Jack Sels may not be one of the best-known names on the European jazz scene of the postwar years – but that's likely because he passed away earlier than most, but not before leaving a strong legacy of jazz on the Belgian scene! Sels is a hell of a player – modern in conception, but possessed with a wonderfully soulful tone – one that goes deeper than some of the other European modernists of the period, and which has as much of a sense of Jack's person in the music as it does his overall vision for the sound. This package might be the first that most of us on this side of the Atlantic have experienced his work – and it's a wonderfully-done set that lives up to the quality of the other Belgian funk and jazz sets on this excellent label – with great song choices and very detailed notes. Sels plays with some of his own groups, but also with Lucky Thompson on tenor, Philip Catherine on guitar and Lou Bennett on organ, and also as part of the Saxorama group. Disc one features studio material, disc two features live sides – and titles include "Zonky", "Gemini", "Dong", "Tchack Tchak", "La Campimania", "African Dance", "Blue Triptichon", "Rain On The Grand Place", "Spanish Lady", "Ginger", "Blue Monk", "Swingin The Blues", and "Night In Tunisia". A hell of a groove from organist Don Shinn – one of the legendary albums recorded for the Landsdowne Series in the UK at the end of the 60s – and like the rest, a set that turns conventional jazz on its ear! Shinn plays Hammond, and a bit of piano – but hardly in ways that echo the American scene, save maybe for some of the changes of Larry Young – but even then, maybe more in the mode of Young when he would start to jam a bit more in the 70s – as Don works here alongside guitarist Paul Hodgeson, who's not afraid to add in some exotic elements to his strings – with bass from Eric Ford and drums from Peter Wolf – all delivered with the intensity of a group who are clearly aware of the changes in rock, but still lean more heavily towards jazz.
