✨✧ Ken Vandermark & Mats GustafssonVerses ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bold, beautiful work from the team of Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson – two of the most inventive reed players of the past few decades – working together here in free, unfettered formation! The set was actually recorded right above Dusty Groove – in a very open, woody loft space – which really helps shape the sound of the set – as the notes from both players ring out wonderfully in the loft – almost recalling the creative improvisations of the New York scene from decades before – but handled here with all the amazing new sense of invention that both Vandermark and Gustafsson seem to bring to any instrument they touch! Ken plays tenor, bass clarinet, and b flat clarinet – and Mats handles alto, tenor, and baritone – all in a rich range of sounds and tones that really leave us breathless. Titles include "Ripolin", "The Madness Of Branches", "I Never Dreamed", "Fortunate Rust", "We Turn The Page", and "Beside Me Images". CD

✨✧ Jimmy Cliff & OthersHarder They Come (2CD Deluxe Edition) ... CD
Island, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. In addition, you get another disc of bonus material, much of it recorded in the crucial years before the film's release, giving you a wonderful portrait of the Jamaican music scene at the time, a dozen and a half of the finest rocksteady and reggae jams of the day, including Desmond Dekker's "Israelites", The Ethiopians "Reggae Hit The Town", Dave & Ansel Collins "Double Barrel", Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" and "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", The Maytals' "Do The Reggay" and "54-46 (That's My Number)", The Melodians "It's My Delight" and Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby". 30 tracks in all on this awesome 2 disc set, packaged up nicely with notes by Dave Katz, photos from the film and full lyrics and track notations! CD
(Includes slipcase. There is a tiny bit of rust on staples of the booklet, but otherwise everything is in great shape.)

Essential old school Elvis Costello from the peak years of the Attractions era! ✨✧ Herbie HancockThrust ... CD
Columbia, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer electric work from Herbie Hancock – right on par with his groundbreaking Headhunters set, but a bit spacier too! The album features a Headhunters-solid lineup – with Bennie Maupin on saxes, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – all grooving wonderfully with Herbie on a set of super-long tracks! Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Tracks are long, tight, and super funky – and titles include "Actual Proof", "Palm Grease", "Spank-A-Lee", and "Butterfly". CD

✨✧ McNeal & NilesThrust ... CD
Chocolate Industries, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible bit of electric funk from the hinterlands of Ohio – an obscure album that hardly saw the light of day back in the 70s, making its first national debut in this excellent reissue! The sound of the set is incredible – moody Fender Rhodes, Arp, moog, and organ over bass and percussion that ranges from spare and skittish, to funky and full-on! A few tracks feature a bit of vocals, but the album's mostly concerned with the interplay between the keys and the percussion – tripping out in wonderfully open-ended tracks, the best of which offer almost a keyboard alternative to the spacey sound of Shuggie Otis in the mid 70s! Re-launched with the Dante Carfagna seal of approval – and a set of tracks that includes "One Slave One Gun", "Quiet Isle", "Untitled", "Ja Ja", "Summer Time", "Punk Fun", and "Hypertension". CD

Eric AlexanderIt's All In The Game ... CD
High Note, 2006. Used ... $6.99
A hokey kind of cover, but a great little album – another easy winner from the team of Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern, easily one of the greatest pairs working together in jazz for the past decade or so! Alexander's got a tremendous tone on the tenor – finely-honed with the maturity of a later Dexter Gordon, but also open to fluid, free moments too – with a sense of joy and exploration that recall our favorite moments on mid 60s Blue Note or Prestige. Mabern is great too – warm on the keys, but never sloppy – a player more filled with soul these days than ever, and always a great accompanist to Alexander's shifting range of modes in a set like this. Drums are by Joe Farnsworth, another trustworthy regular partner to the pair – and Nat Reeves completes the quartet on bass. Titles include 3 excellent Alexander originals (always his best work on record) – "Typhoon 11", "Little Lucas", and "Open & Shut" – plus versions of "Where Is The Love", "Where Or When", "Ruby My Dear", and "It's All In The Game". Louis Armstrong & Duke EllingtonGreat Summit/Paris Blues ... CD
20th Century Masterworks (Spain), 1961. Used ... $6.99 8.99
On Great Summit Duke joins the combo of Louis Armstrong on piano – a group that includes Trummy Young on trombone and Barney Bigard on clarinet! We've always loved Duke Ellington's soundtracks, and Paris Blues is one of his best! The score is a moody introspective one, written for a 1961 film that starred Paul Newman as a frustrated jazz musician living in Paris. The "Paris Blues" theme is a dark, somber composition that is supposedly Newman's masterpiece as a jazz writer – and it works beautifully with the film's themes of frustration and unfulfilled desire. Ellington's at his best here, and apart from the main theme, the score also has great versions of classics like "Mood Indigo" and "Take The A Train", plus originals like "Nite", "Wild Man Moore", "Guitar Amour", and "Paris Stairs". Also features Louis Armstrong on one track! CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At Duke's Place ... CD
Verve, 1965. Used ... $5.99
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Players are all of the Ellington stalwarts of the time – and titles include "Imagine My Frustration", "Duke's Place", "What Am I Here For", "Azure", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Passion Flower", and "Something To Live For". Fabio FrizziFrizzi 2 Fulci – Undead In Austin ... CD
Beat (Italy), 2018. Used ... $18.99
A recent live performance by Italian soundtrack legend Fabio Frizzi – recorded in America as part of a tour designed to support Frizzi's surprising return to the spotlight in recent years! In fact, the Frizzi heard here is even more in the spotlight than ever before – still using the evocative modes of his soundtrack creations, but also putting forward more vocal songs as well – handled by a group of younger musicians working with Frizzi, in a style that moves between the keyboard soundtrack styles of the 80s generation, and some of the more full-on sounds of earlier Italian prog! The whole thing was recorded in a church – and titles include "Suono Aperto", "Oltre La Soglia", "Silver Saddle", "With You", "Movin On", "Chaco", "Bunny Love Song", "Zombi 2", "Sette Note In Nero", "Rusty Games", "The Weeping Woman", and "Un Gatto Nel Cervallo". ✨✧ Fabio FrizziFrizzi 2 Fulci – Live At Union Chapel ... CD
Beat (Italy), 2014. Used 2CD ... $14.99
A cool re-creation of the best soundtrack modes of Fabio Frizzi – particularly his scores for the films of Lucio Fulci! The performance is a live one, but done with a very classic vibe – played by a small combo that mixes keyboards, guitar, and rhythms with some light strings to really capture the creepy vibe of Frizzi's best soundtrack material – served up here in a mix of instrumental tracks that occasionally feature vocals – with music from the films Manhattan Baby, Zombi 2, Paura Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi, Beware Of Darkness, and more! Titles include "Bunny Love Song", "Silver Saddle", "Baby Sequence" (numbers 1-4), "Zombi 2", "Wast It All In Vain", "Rusth Games", "Luca Il Contrabbandiere", "Voci Dal Nulla" and more. CD

✨✧ Jeru The DamajaWrath Of The Math ... CD
Payday, 1996. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A stone classic from the glory days of 90s hip hop – a set that's worth it not just for Jeru's mad lyrics, but also for the sublime production of DJ Premier – from a time when he had so much studio genius, he seemed to be reinventing the sound of hip hop with each new release! The set's a double-length gem, billed on the back as "created to save hip hop" – which Jeru and a rare few were able to do at the major label level, at a time when artists rarely got the chance to explode with such freedom and power like this. Tracks include "One Day", "Me Or The Papes", "Tha Frustrated Nigga", "Scientifical Madness", "Revenge Of The Prophet (Part 5)", "One Day", "Too Perverted", "Invasion", "Ya Playin Yaself", "Black Cowboys", "Whatever", "Physical Stamina", and "How I'm Livin". Boogaloo Joe JonesLegends Of Acid Jazz – Boogaloo Joe/Right On Brother ... CD
Prestige, 1969/1970. Used ... $19.99
2 of Boogaloo Joe's best and rarest albums on one CD – guitar jazz funk at its best! First up is Boogaloo Joe – a killer session of funky guitar jazz, and the record that gave Ivan "Boogaloo" Joe Jones his nickname! The set's a full-on wailer that really blows away Joe's first two on Prestige – breaking out ouf the box with a killer lineup that includes Rusty Bryant on tenor, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Sonny Phillips on organ – all working with Joe's incredibly tight guitar lines to craft some wicked tunes that take soul jazz firmly into the sound of the 70s! Titles include "Boogaloo Joe", "People Are Talking", "Dream On Little Dreamer", and "Atlantic City Soul". Right On Brother is next – and is Ivan's first truly sublime album – a set that showed the world that he was easily one of the greatest jazz guitarists of his generation – able to spin out single-note jams with a speed and dexterity that few others could match! The groove here is totally great and very righteous – heavy drums from Bernard Purdie, wailing organ from Charles Earland, and saxophone from Rusty Bryant – all cooking together in the best early 70s Prestige jazz funk mode! Titles include "Right On", "Brown Bag", "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", and "Poppin". CD

✨✧ Kipper JonesOrdinary Story ... CD
Virgin, 1990. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A really great solo set from Kipper Jones – previously in the group Thrust, but maybe even better here as a lead act on his own! The record was really slept on at the time, but it's definitely in the stronger side of mainstream soul of the period – new jack beats on many cuts, but a richer sort of songwriting than most, with surprisingly positive vibes that really draw plenty from Kipper's great vocal approach too! The man himself produced most of the album – and titles include "Poor Elaine", "My House", "Ordinary Story", "Trust", "Consider Me Yours", "Cut Me No Slack", "Watch Over Me", and "Shock Wave". CD

Charles MingusCharles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. Used ... $4.99
The title's an apt one, because after frustrations experienced working for Columbia and other labels, Mingus is finally allowed the freedom here to present his own ideas in all their unfettered glory – working with a bracingly tight quartet that features Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet and Ted Curson on trumpet! A number of the tracks here are familiar in their titles from other records, but the versions here stretch out far longer – moving past 10 minutes on 2 of the album's 4 tracks, and approaching that limit on others. But even more noticeable is the spareness of the sound – as the smaller group versions allow for a tremendous amount of solo space, really letting the focus fall on the two horn players, with the bass of Mingus and drums of Dannie Richmond shading in the space behind and beyond. Titles include "Folk Forms No. 1", "All the Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother", and the original uncensored version of "Faubus Fables". CD

✨✧ Joe MorrisBalance ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2014. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Guitarist Joe Morris works here with frequent partner Mat Maneri on viola – a duo who've been making music for many years together – and who find this really special way of combining their two instruments together – at a level that's almost its own sort of space between a viola and guitar! Sounds come from either musician at a level that's always very inventive, and spontaneously creative – and the pair get rhythmic assistance from Chris Lightcap on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums – both of whom are as loose and free as Morris and Maneri, so that the instruments shade in the sound more than direct the propulsion of performance. Titles include "Thought", "Effort", "Trust", "Purpose", "Substance", and "Meaning". CD

Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Quartet – At Storyville (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $4.99
Gerry Mulligan brings the piano back in nicely here – but in a way that still hangs onto all the best modern tones of his earlier Pacific Jazz sessions! The date's a live one – done at Storyville in Boston – but the sound is wonderfully intimate, with Gerry on baritone sax and piano, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. The Crow/Bailey rhythm section is superb – nicely swinging throughout – and Gerry's work on piano has that airy, moody quality that would show up even more strongly in the 60s. Titles include "Bweebida Bwobbida", "Open Country", "Rustic Hop", "Bike Up The Strand", and "Storyville Story". CD

Archie SheppFire Music ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1965. Used ... $6.99
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! CD also features a bonus live version of "Hambone"! CD

Roulette (Japan), 1958. Used ... $19.99
One of the more obscure albums by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – a session of Basie tunes, performed with backing by the Count, plus additional lead vocals by Joe Williams, the voice most closely associated with the Basie group at the time! The style is similar to the trio's Sing A Song Of Basie album for ABC, but handled here with a bit more of an edge, and a rougher, more freewheeling groove that's a better fit for the great Basie sound of the late 50s – a great adaptation of the groove by Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross! The record's a nice sometimes-overlooked chapter in the excellent Count Basie run on Roulette – and titles include "Every Tub", "Rusty Dusty Blues", "The King", "Shorty George", and "Let Me See". CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto #2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". CD also features 5 bonus tracks with vocals from Astrud Gilberto – "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Only Trust Your Heart", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", and "Eu E Voce" – all from the Getz Au Go Go album. The rare early 80s club soul set from Margie Joseph – kind of an bubbling, synth and programming era departure of the stunning female southern soul singer! The groove is definitely a left turn for Margie, but it's endearing modern club soul – with the dancefloor gem "Knockout" and others like it, plus more laidback gems that more of a showcase for incredible voice – which is still soaring and beautiful at this point! Titles include "Knockout" (special mix), "Moove To The Groove", "Gonna Get You", "Give It To Me", "Pull The Shade", "The One You Can Trust" and more – plus 3 bonus tracks: a re-edit and an extended mix of "Knockout" plus a previously unreleased remix of "Moove To The Groove". Raw, stripped down hip hop sample blues from Kid Koala – done on his trusty SP1200! It's unlike anything Koala's done to date, and unlike any of the more famous examples of a producer-DJ mining old school blues records. One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". Also includes the bonus track "Hang On To Your Ego". CD

✨✧ Michael ChapmanPlaying Guitar The Easy Way ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1978. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very different album than some of the earlier records that we love from Michael Chapman – but a set that's equally wonderful in its own sort of way! The set is initially exactly what's promised in the title – a record of guitar instruction, but one that's delivered with all the complex and subtle styles that Chapman brought to his own music – at a level that would have really frustrated any beginning guitar player trying to keep up! Think of the set as an all-instrumental outing from Chapman, one that really shows the special touches on his instrument – presented at a level that's a bit like earlier work from other UK giants, like Bert Jansch or John Renbourn. Titles include "Normal Norman", "Loop The Loop", "A Scholarly Man", "Rockport Sunday", "High Wide & Handsome", and "Pipe Dreams". CD

BPM, 2005. Used CD/DVD ... Out Of Stock
A recent album from the legendary George Duke, and a great one too – put together with a sense of soul and sound that really recalls some of Duke's best work of the late 70s! The album's got a wonderful balance between electric and acoustic elements – especially at points when George puts the keyboards aside, and steps out on acoustic piano – creating lines that ring out proudly amidst the warm backdrops of the group. George also handles some Fender Rhodes on the record, with a very old school vibe – and in addition to his own lead vocals, the set also features backups from Eric Benet, Howard Hewett, Jim Gilstrap, and Rachelle Ferrell. Titles include a sweet remake of "Superwoman", plus "No One", "T-jam", "Sausalito", "Saturday Night", "Hybrids", "Homeland", and "Trust". DVD contains excerpts from the Live In Tokyo 1983 DVD. CD

✨✧ Heliocentrics & Melvin Van PeeblesLast Transmission ... CD
Now Again, 2014. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing collaboration between The Heliocentrics and underground film legend Melvin Van Peebles – a set that has the group serving up some madly trippy grooves, while Melvin speaks and sings some wisdom of his own! Van Peebles already blew our minds years ago with his insane soundtrack to Sweet Sweetback's Baaaadasss Song – still one of our favorite records of all times – and The Heliocentrics follow in the odd spirit of that gem, by mixing lots of sounds and styles together in a mad cacophony of music – then leaving just the right amount of space for Melvin to come into the mix! Instrumentation is often fuzzy and psych-oriented, but always with a funky, soulful vibe as well – of the sort you'd hear on vintage records from Van Peebles – and titles include "Big Bang Reincarnation", "Transformation", "Infinite List", "Trust The Cosmos", and "Blue Mist". Special package also features a full bonus disc of instrumentals too! CD

A seminal album – a late 60s classic meeting of the brain trust of the avant garde jazz scene in New York, recorded for the young JCOA label – and put forth as one of their early attempts to prove that musicians could be in charge of the means of production! Michael Mantler provided the core composition, and directs the group – but the lineup is a who's who of forces who'd record for ESP, Impulse, and other labels – with bold solos from Don Cherry on cornet, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Larry Coryell on guitar, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Cecil Taylor on piano, and Pharoah Sanders on tenor – in a larger lineup of players who also include Steve Marcus, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Alan Silva, Carla Bley, Beaver Harris, Charles Davis, Robert Northern, Kent Carter, and many other key avant musicians! Freddie King first rose to prominence in the 60s as a hell of a guitarist with a penchant for searing licks – but 70s records like this really put him over the top as a vocalist too! The set was done for Leon Russell's Shelter label – and Russell produced and plays piano and organ on the record, yet still gives Freddie all the space he needs in the lead – which he does wonderfully, both on vocals and his own "singing" guitar! Don Preston is in the small group on second guitar, and there's some nice use of organ as well – and titles include "You Was Wrong", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", "The Sky Is Crying", "I'd Rather Be Blind", and "Me and My Guitar". CTI/A&M, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing! This is when Wes Montgomery really starts to get interesting to us – when he's working with a top-line arranger like Don Sebesky, crafting some incredibly compelling chords over lightly jazzy arrangements and soaring strings, in a whole new mode of expression that would go onto transform a generation of guitar players! And sure, this album sold a gazillion copies – but we'll be honest in saying that we think it's loads more complex and mature than some of Wes' straight jazz sides from earlier years – light years away from the small combo dates of the early years, both in conception and sound. Titles include "Day In The Life", "Watch What Happens", "California Nights", "Windy", "Trust In Me", and "The Joker". CD

Demon/West Side (UK), Late 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
All 3 Move albums remastered and collected in 1 massive set! This anthology includes basically everything you could ever want by these psychedelic pop maestros – including their self-titled 1st LP, Shazam, Looking On, singles, un-issued tracks, as well as the 1st ever CD version of the live Something Else EP – showcasing each phase of the group's influential career. Essentially the brainchild of songwriter/lead guitarist Roy Wood, the Move were arguably one of the best and most important British groups of the late 60s to never make a dent on the American charts, combining shimmering psych-pop with a harder edge and a sometimes morbid lyrical twist (as evident on the first 2 discs). The 3rd CD contains the band's final album and 1st to feature a new member – guitarist Jeff Lynne (formerly of the Idle Race and future of Electric Light Orchestra) – whose cheerier pop notions proved an interesting, if not frustrating counterpoint to Wood's darker, ironic sensibilities. Wood and Lynne's growing fascination with orchestral rock would cause them to disband the Move in 1972 and form ELO – opening up a new chapter in the history of British rock, but this anthology contains a whopping 54 tracks including; "I Can Hear The Grass Grow", "Lemon Tree", Walk Upon The Water", "Flowers In The Rain", "Fire Brigade", from The Move, "Blackberry Way", "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited", and "Beautiful Daughter" from Shazam, and "Brontosaurus", "Looking On", and "Feel Too Good" from Looking On – Essential stuff! Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Easily our favorite album ever by Ann Peebles – not just for the beathead title track, but also because it seems to be the one record where she brings a bit something extra to the studio! The sound is certainly in the classic Hi Records mode here – thanks to production by Willie Mitchell – but there's also a deeper groove overall, a stronger burning bottom, and an all-soul sound to most tracks that goes way beyond simple cliches of southern soul. Ann's vocals are tremendous throughout – sometimes sweet, sometimes mean – and titles include the sublime "I Can't Stand The Rain", plus "Run Run Run", "One Way Street", "You Keep Me Hangin On", and "If We Can't Trust Each Other". Prestige, 1969/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Keyboardist Sonny Phillips was one of the lesser-known talents on the Prestige roster of jazz funk greats in the early 70s – and this nice 2-in-1 CD brings together his 2 best albums for the label, both of which feature Phillips on organ, along with giants like Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones on guitar, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Rusty Bryant on tenor. The album Sure Nuff is probably Phillips' best for the label – a set that's done with the lean, hard funky sound of other greats working for Prestige during the same time – especially on the cuts "Sure Nuff, Sure Nuff", "The Other Blues", "Be Yourself", and "Oleo". Black On Black has a bit more of a mellow groove, but still kicks nicely, especially on the tracks "Check It Out", and "Black On Black". 10 tracks in all, with the usual "Legends Of Acid Jazz" package. This all-star quartet really won us over the first time around (and trust us, we can always be wary of too many cooks in the broth) – and they're equally great here, too – with a sound that's even greater than the sum of its mighty parts – almost as if each of these longtime leaders have decided it's even better to throw their collective hats in the ring and come up with something really special together! The piano of Brad Mehldau has a way of really ringing out with a brightness next to the sharper edges of Redman's horn – who himself seems to push forward with a new sense of imagination on his solos – warmed up a bit by the bass of Christian McBride, as all the players are kicked into gear by Brian Blade's work on drums. Merge, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
Instrumental guitar great William Tyler's second album under his own name, and his first for indie powerhouse Merge Records – and it's an exceptionally beautiful piece of work from a player who's really just getting started! Tyler strikes a youthful presense, but he's actually been playing around a lot behind the scenes – as a studio and/or touring guitarist for Lambchop, Candi Staton, Charlie Louvin and others wise enough to record with producer Mark Nevers – who works on this record, too. Tyler is definitely inspired by finger style folk guitarists from the mid 20th Century onward, but he's also got a hypnotic style that feels like it's inspired by more atmospheric country rock and rustic 70s soundtracks. Here he's mixing it all it into a brilliant style all his own, and it's SO good. Guest musicians include fellow youthful Nashville string genius Chris Scruggs, drummer Scott Martin, steel player Luke Schneider and Roy Agee on trombone. Jazzanova (Germany), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stunningly great compilation of rare jazz tracks from the East German state-run Amiga label. The tracks, which span the dates in the title, were selected by the group Jazzanova for Compost Records, and the material has the same sort of uptempo jazzy sound as some of the best records on Compost. Far from the heavy dirgey sound you might expect from East Germany in the 60's, most of this stuff's surprisingly light, lyrical, and very groovy. There's loads of wonderful modal tracks that you'll never find on original release, and the album is an essential peek at a jazz culture that's even fairly hard to approach by serious collectors! The notes are good, and the compilation includes work by Manfred-Ludwig Sextett, Theo Schumann Combo, Werner Pfuller Quintett, Modern Jazz Big Band '65, and Orchester Klaus Lenz. Captured Tracks, Mid 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the farther reaches of the American underground scene in the mid 80s – years after punk and post-punk modes – and a portrait of a whole generation who rose up in their wake, but maybe made music that was something else entirely! 20 years hence, these guys might have been garage rock bands – and while they've got some of that spirit, they've also learned the sharper guitar edges of the late 70s/early 80s scene – but work towards songs that are sometimes more personal, and subjects that are more down to earth. At some level, these groups are America's version of the C86 generation – but more obscure, with less polish, as they were never likely to get the airplay or press of the British scene – which is what makes the music even more compelling, especially as some of these guys were very tied to local scenes. The package is great – with an enormous booklet of notes that's worth the price alone – in support of 28 tracks that include "The Meeting" by Pop Art, "Change" by Holiday, "When Do You Say Hello" by Great Plains, "Say Goodbye" by Riff Doctors, "Misery Me & You" by White Sisters, "Is It You" by The Darrows, "Seven Steps Down" by Salem 66, "Five O'Clock" by Three Hits, "She Collides With Me" by Sex Clark Five, "All My Friends" by Primitons, "All That Stuff" by The Windbreakers, and "Trusted Woods" by The Reverbs. Essential late 80s thrash from one the genres linchpin bands! State Of Euphoria draws the short straw when it comes to critical recognition of the band's 80s output, thanks in no small part to the fact that it's the full length follow up to Among The Living. It's hard to live up to the legacy of the one of the greatest American heavy metal albums of all time, but we're feeling pretty euphoric revisiting this one after all these years! Anthrax always leaned more on trudging riffs than lightning speed or showy guitar solos, arguably making them the most fun of thrash's vaunted "Big 4" and this one holds up better than it's given credit for. ✨✧ Bobby BareMe & McDill/Sleeper Wherever I Fall/Bare/Down & Dirty ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Late 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Four late 70s albums from Bobby Bare – all brought together in a single set! First up is Me & McGill – a really special sort of album from the great Bobby Bare – a set that's a collaborative effort with songwriter Bob McDill, as you can probably guess from the title! Bob gives Bobby tunes that are nicely different than some of the mid 70s material he was recording for RCA – maybe a bit more down to earth, with less easy attempts at wit – and at a level that show a maturing Bare, in styles that are similar to some of the shifts that Merle Haggard was taking at the time. Titles include "If You Think I'm Crazy Now", "Look Who I'm Cheating On Tonight", "The Woman In Every Man's Life", "Tired Of The Road Joe", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", and "Till I Get On Feet". Sleeper Wherever I Fall is Bobby Bare's first album for Columbia Records – a bit of a return to straighter material than some of his concept records for RCA from a few years back – material that really helps the maturing singer find a way towards some of the adult territory that some of his contemporaries were handling at the time – but all without ever sounding too commercial or mainstream, maybe a shift towards territory of some of the non-outlaw material of David Allen Coe. Titles include "Hot Afternoon", "Goin Up's Easy Goin Down's Hard", "Sleep Tight Good Night Man", "What Did It Get Me", "The Last Time", and "Rodeo Queen". Bare is a record that reunites Bobby with songwriter Shel Silverstein – the talent who really helped him reignite his music at the start of the 70s! The songs here are maybe a bit less concept, or joke-oriented than some of Silverstein's more famous material – a great reminder that Shel can be a hell of a songwriter in more conventional modes – and a few tracks on the record are by other writers too. Throughout it all, that great Bobby Bare vocal approach really makes the best of the songs – titles that include "This Guitar Is For Sale", "Too Many Nights Alone", "Greasy Grit Gravy", "Sing For The Song", and "Yard Full Of Rusty Cars". Down & Dirty is a strong live set from Bobby Bare – a singer we mostly associate with studio work, but who's clearly at home here in front of a crowd! There's maybe some slightly more rockish phrasing in some of the instrumentation – but the live presentation keeps things from ever sounding commercially overdone – and the songs are a mix of material from the kinds of singers who always bring out the best in Bobby Bare – a fair bit from Shel Silverstein, plus more from Bob McDill, Townes Van Zandt, and Kris Kristofferson. Titles include "Some Days Are Diamonds", "Numbers", "Tequila Sheila", "I Can't Watch The Movie Anymore", "Qualudes Again", "Down To My Last Come & Get Me", and "Good For Nothing Blues". CD

A great blend of Brazilian roots and piano jazz – played here by a trio that's all-solid, all the way through – serving up some really wonderful music that never relies on bossa cliches, or any sort of tricks and gimmicks! Imperial/RPM (UK), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heady work from Jackie DeShannon's later years in 60s pop – an album with themes and styles that go way beyond her earlier recordings – as you might guess from the hip Laurel Canyon reference in the title! Jackie's working here in a mode that's much more strongly in a singer-songwriter style than before – with arrangements and backings that are a lot more organic, and less pop-tuned than ever – almost in a Laura Nyro approach on some numbers. As usual, a good portion of the tracks were written by Jackie herself – including "Holly Would", "Come & Stay With Me", "LA", "Too Close", and "Laurel Canyon" – and the album also features a few well chosen tracks by other writers too, like "Bitter Honey" by Paul Williams & Roger Nichols, "I Got My Reason" by Barry White, and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" by Smokey Robinson. There's also a growing soulfulness in the arrangements too – a sound that comes out even more fully on the bonus tracks, some of which were written and produced by Bobby Womack! Bonus tracks include Jackie singing the Womack tracks "What Is This", "Trust In Me", and "Ooh You Did It Again" – plus "Happy Go Lucky Girl", "Efferfescent Blue", "Children & Flowers", and "Put A Little Love In Your Heart". Pablo, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ellington in Paris – a great lost live recording from the late 50s, issued as one of the treasures to come out later on Pablo Records! There's a nice edge to the recording – more so than some of the more polished Ellington live dates of the time – partly because of the recording quality – which is crisp and clear, but maybe a bit more casual overall – in ways that let you hear the orchestra working a bit without a net. Players are an all-star lineup of Ellingtonians – and titles include "Jeep's Blues", "All Of Me", "Newport Up", "Juniflip", "Tenderly", "Hi Fi Fo Fum", "Frustration", and "Jam With Sam". CD

Jazzland/OJC, 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most modern moments from Don Elliott in the 50s – a twin-trumpet album that's awash in counterpoint experiments of the time! Trumpeter Rusty Dedrick joins Don in the frontline – working together in tight head arrangements that have a strong chamber feel to them, but then opening up into more fluidly expressive solos that are the main strength of the set. Other players include Mundell Lowe on guitar, Eddie Safranski on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – as well as Dick Hyman, who handled all the arrangements and wrote a good number of the tunes! Titles include "Mine", "Vampire Till Ready", "Your Own Iron", "Dominick Seventh", "The Bull Speaks", and "Henry's Mambo". CD

✨✧ Marvin GayeDream Of A Lifetime ... CD
Columbia, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great posthumous release from the mighty Marvin Gaye – a set that's half comprised of material that Marvin was working on before his early death, and half pulled from rare personal recordings he'd entrusted to his mother! The cover carries a message that some of the material might be "offensive to some listeners" – and the music is kind of an 80s extension of the sensual themes that Gaye first opened up in the 70s – taken to some slightly more sexual territory here. But other tracks are even more sophisticated than you might expect – very ambitious material that almost hint at a return to the greatness of early 70s Motown and its more complicated presentation of themes – and which offsets the love songs nicely. Together, the work makes for a surprisingly nice addition to Gaye's catalog – possibly not as essential as some of his classics, but still way better than the work of most – and proof that Marvin hardly ever missed at all! Titles include "Sanctified Lady", "Savage In The Sack", "It's Madness", "Ain't It Funny (How Things Turn Around)", "Symphony", "Life's Opera", and "Dream Of A Lifetime" CD

Verve, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nothing serious maybe, but a great set of straight jazz work from Roy Hargrove – released alongside the trumpeter's Distractions album by his RH Factor group – almost as a reminder that Roy's equally great at acoustic jazz! The album really benefits from some strong piano work from Ronnie Matthews – whose bold work on the keys echo with some of the deep soulfulness of his classic performances from the 60s and 70s, and really ground the sound of the group throughout the set. And speaking of classic players, Slide Hampton joins the group on a handful of numbers – creating interplay with Hargrove's horn that's very nice, and often in the wash of colors that Slide brings to his own best work. Other players include Justin Robinson on alto, Dwayne Burno on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – and titles include "Trust", "Camaraderie", "Day In Vienna", "Invitation", "Salima's Dance", and "The Gift". ✨✧ Richard Groove HolmesLegends Of Acid Jazz – The Groover/That Healin Feelin ... CD
Prestige, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 late 60s sides by Groove Holmes – back to back on one CD! The Groover is a nice one from the days when Groove was playing with guitarist George Freeman! The core of the tracks on here feature a trio of Holmes, Freeman, and drummer Billy Jackson – and the trio knows how to cook nice and nicely, especially on the original cut "The Walrus", a groovy number written by Freeman, with his usual off-kilter approach. Other cuts include "My Scenery", "Blue Moon", and "I'll Remember April". That Healin Feelin is a tight, no-nonsense set of hard grooves featuring a quartet that includes Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, and Herbie Lovelle. There's a strong bottom sound to the session – picking up from the Misty days, when Groove learned that he could take just about any track, and make it groove like a mofo! Because of this, the album's selections – "That Healin Feelin", "Irene Court", "Castle Rock", and "On a Clear Day" – all sound night and tight, as Groove would have delivered the tunes playing before one of his many well-attended audiences at the time! Incredibly great work from Toninho Horta – especially considering that the album's a US release from the early 90s! Horta's working here in a tight trio with Gary Peacock on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – both players we can trust to keep things real, and help Toninho hit a groove that's solidly jazzy. The style is more straight jazz than some of Horta's other work – but in a really great way – and although he sings a bit on the set in that wordless way of his, there seems to be more of a focus than before on well-played guitar solos, both electric and acoustic. Titles include "Pica Pau", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "My Funny Valentine", "Minas Train", "Footprints", "Tarde", and "O Amor Em Paz". CD

Wonderful trio work from Vijay Iyer – a set that's got his piano doing equal time with the drums of Tyshawn Sorey and bass of Linda May Han Oh – all at a level that reminds us why we first fell in love with Iyer's music many years back! The set's a return to the kind of records that really has Vijay reshaping the role of the trio in jazz – with every player rhythmic at once, but still also finding melodic moments together too – breaking down conventional structures, but never in a way that's free jazz either – just boldly, lyrically leaping towards the future! ✨✧ Etta JamesAt Last (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Chess, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing step forward for the young Etta James – a singer who was delivering a raw, shouting form of R&B just a few years before – but who here ascends into soul music heaven with her famous work on the album! The title cut is the stuff of legend – played and played, again and again over the years – but the whole record's wonderful, and handled with this new level of soul sophistication by arranger Riley Hampton – the great Chicago talent who'd reach similar heights in his charts for singers that include Lorez Alexandria and Walter Jackson. Hampton's dark use of strings brings out a whole new side of James' brilliance – a quality that raised Etta James up out of the R&B ghetto, and forever put her into the legions of legendary 60s soul stars! Titles include the perennial classic "At Last", plus "All I Could Do Was Cry", "Tough Mary", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Anything To Say You're Mine", and "Trust In Me". The gentler side of Etta James – a great collection of ballads and love songs from her 60s years at Chess – a time when she was changing her game from the rougher R&B of the 50s, and turning into one of the most sophisticated soul stars on Chess! There's a great balance here between Etta's raw emotions and some more polished styles in the backdrop – never slick or throwaway pop strings, and instead an equally soulful element of the tunes – handled partly by the great Riley Hampton. One of the oddest of the 70s concept albums by The Kinks – a set of tracks that takes Ray Davies and the band back to the school days of their youth – where they revisit frustrations, anger, and the disgrace in the title! The best moments here are the ones that unlock a bit of the straighter rocking that shows up more in late 70s Kinks work – like the excellent single "I'm In Disgrace", the anthemic "No More Looking Back", or the leadoff "Schooldays" – and a few of the weaker moments get a bit too silly, and almost showy at times – like Ray's writing for a forthcoming Broadway career. ✨✧ Uli Lenz/Cecil McBee/Joe ChambersLive At Sweet Basil ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Uli Lenz really sparkles here – in the company of the tremendous rhythm duo of Cecil McBee on bass and Joe Chambers on drums! The recording's a live one – as you'll know from the title – and the tracks are long, open, and very fluid – balancing some of the modern elements in Uli's piano with the strong, soulful currents that both the bass and drums bring to the music – modes that are especially strong on the original tunes on the album by Lenz, but which really transform the few familiar numbers too. Chambers is a complete delight – and the album's a great reminder of all the wonderful elements he brought to jazz in his early years – on titles that include "Don't Trust The Mirror", "Midnight Candy", "Five For Bob", "Inner Urge", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Freedom Jazz Dance". ✨✧ Charles MingusCharles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

A seminal solo set from Morrissey – one that brings together all the singles and EP tracks he issued in the last few years of the 80s – when he moved away from the solid album format of Viva Hate, and just let his ideas hit the market as they came to him! That approach was a bit like that of The Smiths – who sometimes meant more to the world in their progression of singles than albums – but it was also frustrating to fans in the digital age, especially Americans, who had less access to singles in that format – hence the need for this full length set, which turned out to be one of the strongest full statements by the singer after stepping out on his own. One of the best of Marlena Shaw's recent albums – an easy going set of vocal tracks, mostly standards, that doesn't try for anything tricky, and which really just lets Marlena do her thing. The backing is mostly piano trio, augmented by nice percussion touches by Milton Cardona, and some occasional guest organ by Ed Kelly or tenor by Chris Potter. As usual, Marlena does a strong job of shifting between jazz and soul modes – keeping things hip without going too far off the deep end, and always setting the songs up with her trademark classy approach. ✨✧ Archie SheppFire Music ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Killer soul from Johnnie Taylor, and really his first major LP! The record was Johnnie's second for Stax – and although the first one was good, this was the record that really had Johnnie hitting that funky bluesy sound that became his trademark into the 70s. The title cut – "Who's Making Love" – is a monster groover with a funky hook that was covered instantly by many jazz combos, and which riffs along with an Isley Brothers-ish kind of sound. The album features loads of other tasty numbers, too – all produced by Al Jackson and Don Davis – and featuring the cuts "Poor Make Believer", "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", and "Payback Hurts". ABC/Dusty Groove, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Majestic music from the mighty Popcorn Wylie – the Detroit soul legend best known for his work in the 60s, but an artist who really shines on this rare 70s set for ABC! The album was done during the same stretch as Lamont Dozier's ABC work – and like those records, this set features killer arrangements and production from McKinley Jackson – who updates an older Detroit groove strongly, while still keeping all the real soul elements of Popcorn's music intact! Dozier helped a bit on some of the tunes, and the whole thing's got a soaring, joyous feel that's really wonderful – uptempo without being uptight, positive without sounding hokey, and perfectly in a unique space that's all its own. Gene Page and Paul Riser throw in a bit of soul on some tracks too – sweetening things up with just the right touches of strings and horns – and Popcorn's vocals are great, especially on some of the more hauntingly-constructed tunes. Titles include the massive "ESP", which begins with an echoey breakbeat, then rolls into a great hook – plus "Trust In Me", "How Did I Lose You", "Georgia's After Hours", "Lost Time", "I Can Take The World On With You", "Both Ends Against The Middle", and "Singing About You And Me". Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. And although the LP was the growing format during these days, there was actually a heck of a lot of great work issued on 45s – still spinning strong with the jukebox crowds in the clubs and tap rooms, and still getting major play on radio stations, where the single was still king. The set features many 45 mixes of funky classics that you might know from LPs – and intersperses them with some other more obscure numbers pulled from full albums – making for an all-solid, all-funky set of tracks from one of the hippest jazz labels ever! Titles include "Fire Eater" by Rusty Bryant, "Don't Knock My Love" by Idris Muhammad, "Jungle Strut" by Gene Ammons, "Express Yourself" by Idris Muhammad, "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" by Melvin Sparks, "Sing A Simple Song" by Charles Earland, "Son Of Man" by Houston Person, "Listen Here (part 1)" by Freddie McCoy, "Black Talk (part 1)" by Charles Earland, "Message From The Meters" by Leon Spencer, "Reelin With The Feeling" by Charles Kynard, "I Want You Back" by Harold Mabern, and "Thank You (part 1)" by Melvin Sparks. A brilliant encapsulation of the modern psych, freak folk, tripped out indie pop, and all around uncategorizable grooves of the Twisted Nerve label – a 10th anniversary celebration – doubling as both a label retrospective and a fantastic, riveting mix set by DJ Andy Votel! This approach works incredibly well, with Votel crafting a heady, exciting interconnective groove out of some fairly diverse material, and also includes some rare remixes Includes bits that sound like they were plucked from some spacey late 60s/early 70s style pharmaceutical fever dream, to more blissed out and dreamy avant pop moments, to some acoustic centered freak folk and electronics peppered experimentalism – in an excellent continuous mix by Votel. Verve, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An odd little album in the Stan Getz catalog of the 50s – not just because of the cheesy cover and title, but also because it features a range of unusual material recorded over a three year period with a variety of different players! Some of the dates here definitely fit the "cool sounds" title of the record – in that they feature Getz with the west coast lineup of Loy Levy on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass – heard more famously on Stan's West Coast album of the same time. But other sides feature a different grouping – with Jimmy Rowles on piano, Bobby Whitlock on bass, and Max Roach on drums – offering up a different side of the west coast altogether. And still others take things back to more of an east coast modern style – by featuring either Tony Fruscella on trumpet or Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, in groups with John Williams on piano. The mix of material makes for a nicely-rounded portrait of Getz's talents in the mid 50s years – and the album features 10 tracks that include "Nobody Else But Me", "Serenade In Blue", "Of Thee I Sing", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Blue Bells", "Roundup Time", "Rustic Hop", and "A Handful Of Stars".
