Adam Ben EzraPin Drop ... CD
Little Big Beat/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Pretty wonderful sounds from Adam Ben Ezra – an artist who works here completely solo, but with a flowing range of sounds that's completely hypnotizing overall! Ezra's a bassist at heart, but also plays piano and clarinet on the record – and also vocalizes a bit, and adds in some foot stomps too – all with this earthy, organic approach to his instruments that really opens up their sonic possibilities, while still also keeping things in a forward-moving, always-swinging style! The work on bass is especially wonderful – as Adam's strong, deep notes are extremely powerful – and often offset by more unusual touches on the strings – not in a gimmicky way, but just fresh sonic expressions. Titles include "Prayer", "Silk Road", "Balagusto", "Can't Stop Running", "Brown Piano", and "India Time". CD

Lakecia BenjaminRise Up ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is even more smoking here than on her previous album for Motema – much more from the streets, as you might guess from the album! Benjamin handles all the sax solos, and composed the music as well – but the set's a very collaborative effort, and is filled with strands of soul and hip hop as well – a nicely gritty blend of the elements that avoids any of the hoke you'd find on a major label project of this nature, cooked up in the studio in North Jersey! The album cover oddly doesn't list song titles – but we can tell you that there's a total of 13 tracks in all – which makes for a very solid record. CD

Chantae CannJourney To Golden ... CD
Atlanta/Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Chante Cann really blew us away with her debut – and she seems to sound even better here – working with a new level of complexity in her music, while still coming across with all the soulful richness of the previous set! Acoustic piano features strongly in the sound – balancing out the lighter, raspier style of Cann's vocals with this deep-ringing tone that's really beautiful – almost an echoey vibe that unlocks all these great colors throughout the album's passage – a lyrical, poetic instrumental aspect that's definitely picked up by Chante with her lyrics. Snarky Puppy guest on two tracks, and pianist Jamie Portee sings on one number with Cann – on titles that include "Da Da'N Da", "Beauty Speaks", "Waterfall", "The Journey Continues", "iChange", "Free Your Dreams", and "For The Children". Malcolm CecilMalcolm Cecil Project ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 15.99
A beautiful return to form for bassist Malcolm Cecil – a musician who made some great waves on the London jazz scene of the 60s – then disappeared behind years of studio and recording work in later decades! Cecil's back and sounding great here – working with a young trio that features superb tenor from Joel Fram, who deftly steps out in a Sonny Rollins-like way amidst the trio of Maclom on bass and Eric Binder on drums. Cecil's still got the lead, but really lets Fram be the main voice of the group – and he sparkles wonderfully on tunes that include "Night Dreamer", "Nardis", "26 2", "Invitation", "Au Privave", "Tricotism", and "Three & One". Also includes a bonus alternate take of "Au Privave". CD

Mark De Clive-Lowe Presents ChurchMark De Clive-Lowe Presents Church (with download) ... LP
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $9.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". 4 KornersPortal Of Gold ... CD
Ropeadope, 2016. New Copy ... $5.99 12.99
A totally fresh post-millennium take on the electric jazz sound of the late 70s & early 80s from Atlanta-based quartet 4 Korners – inspired by the funky fusion era, but really putting it in a timeless light of their own! We've always loved the sound that provides inspiration here – mid-to-late 70s electric keyboard jazz, carried well into the 80s by The Yellowjackets and others – so fiercely modern sounding in its time that it's now, somewhat ironically, difficult to pull off without sounding self-consciously retro. That's where the 4 Korners excel so strongly. It's fresh as can be! The players are Clarence Hill on keys, James Thompson Jr. on bass, Isaac Thomson on guitar and Jerrod Sullivan on drums – who share songwriting and production credit equally in the notes – which comes as no surprise considering how tightly it plays! Titles include "Midnight Interstate", "King's Highway", "The Dew", "Orbiting Hands", "Table For 2", "Through His Eyes", "The Great Flight", "Motions" and "Portal Of Gold". CD

RSVP/Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 18.98
Great sounds from Ghost Note – a group that's co-led by a drummer and a keyboardist who also plays more drums – which should give you an idea of the funky nature of the album! There's a fuller group on hand for most of the record – guitar, tenor, alto, flute, and more keyboards – but most numbers seem to start from the rhythms first, then layer on the instrumental elements – avoiding vocals for the most part, although there's some snippets of found spoken bits used throughout the set – mostly as commentary! Kamasi Washington guests on the tune "No More Silence", Karl Denson guests on "Weedie B Good", and other titles include "Swagism", "Dry Rub", "Bawllz", "What's Next", "Funk You Muthafunka", "The Lone Angel", "Trifelife", and "Milkshake". Ollie HowellSelf-Identity ... CD
Sky Academy/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
A beautiful voyage of self-discovery from drummer Ollie Howell – but a set that also clearly gets its strength his collaboration with the other members of the session too! Ollie adds in a bit of electronics with his drums, but the core energy here mostly comes from the acoustic exchange between the tenor of Duncan Eagles, trumpet of Henry Spencer, piano of Matt Robinson, and bass of Max Luthert – players who often create these building blocks of sound that soar to the sky with sort of an understated spiritual vibe – very contemporary in approach, yet also with much deeper roots of inspiration. The group also features Ant Law on guitar, and Robinson plays a bit of Fender Rhodes – but the most haunting elements, to us, come from that acoustic core that really drives the sound. Titles include "Almost Tomorrow", "Rise & Fall", "Shadows", "Knew", "Balancing Stones", "In Truth", and "The Unknown". CD

The cover's got a couple of monkeys playing the music – but the sound here actually comes from bothers Mike and Aaron Dolton – the first of whom plays the drums, the latter who seems to handle just about everything else! Their music is a blend of jazz and soul – sometimes with the kind of future elements you'd guess from the image, sometimes more understated – in a good fit with the more sensitive lyrics of the album's range of different singers – who include Jube (Julie Clarkson), Bennett Holland, Sid M, and Jamie Paul. A few tracks are instrumental – with more of a focus on the sax and drums – and titles include "Baskerville", "Last Minute", "Already Home", "Midnight", "Foot Down", "Flow State", and "Thank You". CD

Terrace MartinVelvet Portraits ... CD
Ropeadope, 2016. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". Sister Gertrude Morgan/King BrittLet's Make A Record/King Britt Presents Sister Gertrude Morgan (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ropeadope, 1968/2005. New Copy 2LP Trifold ... $33.99 34.98
A pair of wonderful records – reissued here together as a single 2LP set! The core album Let's Make A Record is a starkly beautiful album from New Orleans street evangelist Sister Gertrude Morgan – recorded in 1968 with only voice and tambourine, but in a way that's got a highly rhythmic groove! Gertrude's been rediscovered of late, due to interest in her artwork – and this record itself is coming back strongly into the spotlight, thanks to King Britt's own brilliant reinterpretation of most of the tunes! But honestly, even if Britt hadn't picked up on this one, we'd still find it extremely compelling – because with only a tambourine to set the groove, Gertrude manages to shake out some tightly snapping little tunes that crackle with an earthy electricity that's pretty darn unique. Titles include "Let Us Make A Record" – which should be chanted at the start of every recording session from now on – plus "Way In The Middle Of The Air", "Power", "I Am The Living Bread", "He Wrote The Revelation", "I Got The New World IN My View", and "I Was Healed By The Wound In His Side". For the other LP, the cosmic talents of King Britt takes older acapella vocals and tambourine rhythms from New Orleans evangelist Sister Gertrude Morgan – originally recorded in 1969, but expanded tremendously here through use of additional keyboards, percussion, and a surprising amount of acoustic instrumentation! Britt's got his usual drum patterns and electronics in the mix, but there's also a fair bit of slide guitar, harmonica, acoustic guitar, and even a bit of lap steel on the set – all of which makes for a sound that's as folksy as it is modern – really opening up a whole new chapter in Britt's career! Titles include "Let's Make A Record", "Living Bread", "Devil's Music", "Power", "New World In My View", "Unceremonious", and "I Was Healed By The Wounds". LP, Vinyl record album

JD Allen adds his tenor to a fair bit of the tracks on this album from drummer Dana Murray – and while his horn isn't usually heard on records with a parental advisory sticker on the front, that setting also makes for a surprisingly strong outlet for his talents! Murray is clearly a very inventive leader – and not only plays other percussion and some keyboards too, but opens the door to some singers and MCs who warrant that label on the front – creating one of the truest blends of jazz, hip hop, and neo soul we've heard in years. Vocals are by Caron Wheeler, Reg Wyns, Heidi Martin, and CJ Mills – and the album also features guest work from Marc Cary on fender Rhodes, Oliver Lake on alto, Nasheet Waits on drums, and Orrin Evans on piano. Titles include "In The Beginning", "Suite Kaepernick", "Ballad Of Lies", "Temptation", "Alice Mae", "Dead Wishes", "The System", "Comfortable Discomfort", and "Stand By Your Man (Lady Liberty)". CD

EP/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
The genius of Eddie Palmieri never seems to dim at all as the years go on – and, if anything, the genius only seems to flower even more – finding new ways of expression that maybe even blow away some of Eddie's classic work from the 60s and 70s! This set is amazing – a fantastically modern refiguring of Latin roots – with elements that stretch back to Palmieri's earliest charanga years and his Latin jazz rebirth, but used in ways that are very different – and very striking throughout! The lineup remains relatively small on most numbers – with very heavy focus on piano, percussion, and bass – but Eddie also makes great use of key guests who include Alfredo De La Fe on violin, Donald Harrison on alto, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and Joe Locke on vibes. Titles include "Locked On", "Cuervas Y Tumbao", "Wise Bata Blues", "La Cancha", "Augustine Parish", "Life", "Samba Do Sueno", and "Jibarita Y Su Son". CD

Sweetly funky grooves from the Philly underground! The Philadelphia Experiment is a great trio featuring drummer Ahmir Thompson (from The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine, who plays some great Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 on the set! The core grooves are by the trio, working together in a way that's not that different from the freestyle funk of Medeski, Martin, & Wood back when they used to care a bit more about the groove – and the group's joined on a few tracks by guests, including Pat Martino on guitar, Jon Swana on trumpet, and Larry Gold on cello. The best cuts on the set have a hard beat underneath, warm rolling basslines, and washes of keyboards over the top to keep things nice and sweet. Titles include "The Miles Hit", "Call For All Demons", "Grover", "Ain't It The Truth", "Mister Magic", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Lesson #4". CD

A fantastic project from keyboardist Terrace Martin – very much in the same spirit as his excellent Velvet Portraits record, but even more collaborative overall – and, given the title, a wonderful expression of the new wave of soul that's been brewing up on the west coast! Martin's keyboards, production, and songwriting anchor most of the record – but there's also a very spirited sense of interplay with all the shifting musicians and other contributors to the record – a lineup that includes Robert Glasper on Fender Rhodes, Trevor Lawrence Jr on rhythms, Kamasi Washington on tenor, Marlon Williams on guitar, and Rose Gold, Chachi, and Preston Harris on vocals – all working together in a style that almost feels like a more cosmic, righteous take on g-funk of years back – filtered through a hip, underground vibe that's pure 21st Century all the way. Titles include "Feelings Of The World", "Chef E Dubble", "Intentions", "Funny How Time Flies", "You & Me", "Up & Away", "Wake Up", and "Your Space". CD

The groove is fantastic right from the start – funky, but very fresh in approach – with lots of crisp crackle on the edges, but never in that overdone way that sometimes buries other groups – and mixed with plenty more organic instrumentation that changes nicely throughout! The singers shift too, but never in a way that feels schizophrenic – as there's a really collaborative spirit to the whole record – singers and musicians, performance and studio – all coming together to make something really fresh and wonderful. Logan Richardson's really on fire here – sounding a bit different than any of his previous records, but equally creative overall! The set's got an unusual format – two guitars and electric bass dominate the middle, with heavy drums from Ryan Lee, and these very openly-blown alto parts from Richardson – sometimes as textural waves of sound, sometimes sharp and pointed, and always up to the challenges of the shifting scapes of the styles! There's a fair bit of darkness in the mix – maybe similar to some of the brooding instrumental funk of Meshell N'Degeocello – and the heavy use of guitar might be seen as a nod to the blues roots hinted at by the title – but the overall sound is very different. Stretch/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 23.98
A trio of fantastic albums from Christian Scott – all packaged together! First up is Ruler Rebel – a fantastic step forward for trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – an artist who takes on a new name with this recording, and a vibrant new sound as well! Scott still plays trumpet, but he also works with some electronics and effects, too – in a group that mixes acoustic elements from piano, flute, and percussion with electric work on Fender Rhodes and guitar – all in a sound that's swirlingly soulful, and as enigmatic as you might expect! The music reaches back to some deeper roots, but reworks the sound completely with lots of contemporary elements – and Scott's trumpet takes on a new sort of majesty in the setting – maybe hitting the promise we first saw in his music years back, but with even more focus here. Titles include "Encryption", "The Coronation Of X A Tunde Adjuah", "The Reckoning", "Ruler Rebel", and "New Orleanian Love Song". Next is Diaspora – a set that has Christian Scott really opening with a new sense of pride and power after adopting the Atunde Adjuah name – and blowing here not just on trumpet, but also "reverse flugelhorn", sirenette, and siren – and also using some sonic architecture to open up and expand his sound! Rhythms are a compelling mix of drum programs and acoustic percussion – peppered with work on alto, Fender Rhodes, bass, guitar, and drums – in this groove that's much more sharp-edged and sonically compelling than most other projects of this nature. Titles include "Lawless", "Our Lady Of New New Orleans", "IDK", "Desire & The Burning Girl", "Completely", "No Love", and "The Walk". Last is Emancipation Proclamation – part of Scott's brilliant trilogy that has him reworking his sound even more than before – using his horn in both acoustic and electric settings, and mixing with bits of funk and deeper musical currents – all at a level that's vaguely in the territory of Don Cherry in the 70s, but served up with a vibe that's very much Christian's own! Rather than be buried in the mix of percussion, Fender Rhodes, and other horns here – Scott seems to be set free, and really opens up with both the space of his solos, and the style of his phrasing – which is even more personal than before. The other players are great, too – a shifting lineup who retain the same bristling energy throughout – on titles that include "Ashes Of Our Forever", "The Emancipation Procrastination", "AvengHer", "Cages", "New Heroes", "Videotape", "The Cypher", "Michele With One L", and "Unrigging November". A fantastic full length set from drummer Nate Smith – an artist who really wins our ears right from the start, then holds us rapt throughout the course of this wonderful debut! Smith's onto something really special here – jazz at the core, but served up in different snapshots of inspiration – with quick changes in rhythm and a shifting focus of instrumentation – in ways that also have Nate playing some Fender Rhodes and other keyboards, as he works alongside Kris Bowers on piano and Rhodes, Jaleel Shaw on alto and soprano, Fima Ephron on bass, and Jeremy Most on guitars. There's some of the electric crackle that we love on Shaw's records, but Smith's also more open to moving around a lot in the way he approaches the tunes – allowing for guest vocals from Gretchen Parlato and Amma Whatt, as well as guest instrumentation from Chris Potter on tenor, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Dave Holland on bass. With support like that, you can definitely guess that Nate's on the right path – which you'll certainly hear on titles that include "Skip Step", "Bounce (parts 1 & 2)", "Disenchantment The Weight", "Retold", "Spinning Down", "Pages", "Home Free", and "Spiracles". Molly Tentarelli is quite a soulful singer – one who definitely lives up to her placement on the Atlanta label – as she reminds us of some of the great recent soul talents we've heard from that city! There's a nicely organic quality to the instrumentation here – a real band, with great keyboards and occasional sax solos – but never in the overstated way of a funk combo, as the backings here are always well-crafted, and done in a way that really suits Molly's lead. And the singer herself is equally understated – clearly possessed of a great range, but working with a nice degree of restraint that really fits the songs – an easygoing vibe that makes the whole thing one of the best female blue-eyed soul records we've heard in awhile. Largely instrumental, but with some strong vocal material, too, titles include "FEAR (Forget Everything And Rise)", "Perception", "Avenue 15" feat Pino Palladino & Petrito Martinez, "(U)nity Theme Song" feat Lauren Desber, "Penelope Ana (Love Interlude)", "New Cuba" feat Petrito Martinez, "Retrograde", "everlasting Belief" feat Jhoard, "Can I Get A Dollar", "Guarapachanga", "Ache" and more. Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A tight quartet with a great combination of elements – the vibes and piano of Mark Sherman and the tenor of Chase Baird – two instrumental forces that have a great way of dancing around each other! Drummer Mike Clark provides lots of rhythms for the proceedings, augmented by the rich work of Felix Pastorius on bass – and the tunes are all originals, mostly by Sherman, with a strong sense of color and tone. Titles include "The Chant", "Loft Funk", "Life Cycle", "Charge Denied", "Love's Touch", "Gently", and "Tipping The Scale". CD

David Weiss & Point Of DepartureWake Up Call ... CD
Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
Trumpeter David Weiss never fails to give us amazing music, no matter what the setting – and here, he's working with his Point Of Departure group – an ultra-hip lineup that features Myron Waldon and JD Allen on tenor sax, each taking on different parts of the record – plus guitar, bass, and drums – as well as a bit of extra Fender Rhodes from Weiss himself! As with some of David's other projects, the music is a look back at the future of modern jazz in the late 60s and early 70s – with a spotlight on amazing compositions by artists like Wayne Shorter, Kenny Cox, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams, Charles Moore, and John McLaughlin – music that was years ahead of its time when written, and which gets even more forward-thinking treatment here by the group. Rhythms are tentative and angular at some points – really allowing for shades of color between the trumpet and tenor – and other points are bolder, and unlock some deeper righteous power in the compositions. Titles include "Sanctuary", "Noh Word", "Two Faced", "Pee Wee", "Gazelle", "The Mystic Knights Of The Sea", and "Sojourn". CD

✨✧ Frank CatalanoLove Supreme Collective ... CD
Ropeadope, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Frank Catalano really lets loose on this album – in a searing take on John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" that showcases a whole new era for the reedman! The notes describe a life-altering accident that Catalano was lucky to survive in 2011 – and during his recovery process, he rediscovered the music of Coltrane – and used that inspiration to unlock much harder, rawer sounds on his tenor than he'd been expressing in the past! The shift is stunning – especially if you only know Frank as more of an old school soul jazz saxophonist – and we're wonderfully surprised at the direction he's taking here – with a group that also features Adam Benjamin on electric piano, Chris Poland on guitar, Jimmy Chamberlin on drums, and Percy Jones on bass. Titles include "Acknowledgement Of Truth", "Resolution Of Purpose", "Pursuance & Persistence", and "Psalm For John". CD

✨✧ Mike Clark & Delbert BumpRetro Report ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky drummer Mike Clark works here with organist Delbert Bump – co-leading a session with a nice blend of classic Hammond modes and a trace of 70s funk! The core group's a quartet – with Vince Denham on tenor and soprano sax, and Elias Lucero on guitar – although the main energy of the record definitely happens between the Hammond and the drums – in a way that recalls the groove between Jack McDuff and Joe Dukes, even though the Clark/Bump sound is very different! Delbert soars out nicely, with an understanding of all the Hammond innovations in recent decades, but with an approach that's never overindulgent – on titles that include "Chicken", "Alice In Wonderland", "Deep In The Inner City", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "More Chicken", "Peri's Scope", and "Well You Needn't". Ropeadope/Atlanta, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You". Andrew Finn Magill definitely makes his violin sing on the set – but he also does so in a way that borrows plenty from Brazilian music – as you might guess from the "canta" in the title! The album features a group that includes Dudu Oliveira on flute, Mike Marshall on mandolin, Joao Camarero on 7 string guitar, and Lourenco Vasconcelos on percussion – all working together with the tightness of a small samba or choro combo, especially the latter – given the way the flute, percussion, and strings dance together with lively acoustic energy. Titles include "Balanco A Bahia", "Pesadelo", "Geada", "Baiao Do Urso", "Perdido", and "Semear". CD

Genius work from Jay Phelps – a jazz trumpeter, but also a soulful singer – yet working here in a mode that's a completely fresh fusion of both of his talents! There's a crispness to the record right from the very first note – like you've just stepped into a cool club from a back alley entrance, and chanced upon the next generation at work – while Phelps effortlessly shifts between his voice and his horn, in a musical setting that's equally effortless in its shift between acoustic and electric elements – which seem to include a fair bit of Fender Rhodes next to round acoustic basslines and percussion – peppered with guest work from a lineup that includes David Binney on alto sax, Stacy Dillard on tenor and soprano, and even some vocal contributions from Cecilia Stalin, Martina Dasilva, and Emilia Martensson. Titles include "Chaos Or Commerce", "LSG", "Amphitrite's Bounty", "Everyone's Ethnic", "Angel", "Flash", "Free As The Birds", and "Chomtalay Chill". CD

Really great work from this up-and-coming combo – a group who seems like they can spin together neo soul and hip hop better than most of the rest – and who also make great use of some live jazzy instrumentation as well! The set compiles live performances done around the midwest in recent years – but there's a quality to the sound that may well have been done in the studio, such is the focus and tightness of the combo. Marga Marion handles lead vocals, and Rico Sisney is the MC – on titles that include "Thin Line", "Blue", "Get It Right", "Five Twelve", "Paintbrush", "Vibration", "Them Us", and "So Close". CD

Mobetta/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from trumpeter Maurice Brown – a straight jazz player by training, but one who opens up here in a warmly soulful groove! The record bristles with loads of great keyboards from Kris Bowers – whose sound is as important to the album as Brown's trumpet – and the rhythms are played live, but have a nicely chunky quality that fits in well with the occasional vocal from Maurice – as well as guest vocal contributions from Talib Kweli, Chris Turner, and J Ivy! Most tracks also feature tenor from Chelsea Baratz – and the whole thing's got a nice groove that's maybe in the same electric territory as some of the more soul-drenched titles in recent years from Blue Note. Titles include "The Mood", "On My Way Home", "Stand Up","Moroccan Dancehall", "Shenanigans", "Capricorn Rising", and "Journey Exotique". CD

Boldly soaring work from singer Sarah Elizabeth Charles – a set that features some trumpet and production from Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – and which has a similar genre-busting quality as his own recent work! The music here is definitely soul, but it's also really reaching beyond – as Charles sometimes has messages that require a less conventional setting to present – and works here with an equally creative combo of musicians, with some especially nice piano and Fender Rhodes from Jesse Elder! The style of her vocals is great – powerful, but never overwhelming in any try too hard mode – really fitting her lyrics on tunes that include "Purview", "Thinker", "Change To Come", "Taller", "Learn How To Love", "March To Revolution (part 2)", and "The Struggle". The title definitely sums up the vibe of the record – because although Trevor Lawrence is the drummer at the core, he's also clearly a hell of a warm personality, too – with a very welcoming vibe that makes the album's array of musicians and guest artists feel right at home! The set's jazz at the core, but with a strong dose of contemporary soul – maybe a bit in the territory of the Robert Glasper Black Radio projects, but with a vibe that's definitely all Trevor's own! The rhythms are rock-solid, and instrumentation often features some mighty sweet keyboards from Kenneth Crouch, Wow Jones, Tabor Gable, and others – alongside other musicians who include Kamasai Washington on tenor, Maurice Mo Betta Brown and Nico Segal on trumpet, Chelsea Baratz and Terrace Martin on saxes, Teodross Avery on tenor, and Nicholas Payton on trumpet. There's just a bit of vocals on the set – sung by Preston Harris, Jimi James, Donna Missal, and oddly LeAnn Rimes – but the instrumental core is what drives the set – on titles that include "Car Vibe", "B Side", "Bring The Party", "The Guts", "11 & 8", "Lovestoned", "Huh", "Alicia's Song", and "Relationships". Spare drums, percussion, and lots of electronics from Tommaso Cappellato – a musician who works here with only a bit of guest vocals from time to time, but never makes us feel like we're missing the presence of a larger group at all! Cappellato's somewhere in a space near cosmic jazz, but is also maybe focused a bit more on the rhythms too – almost like some of the best talents coming out of the London scene about a decade ago – younger musicians who were influenced by 70s electric jazz, but took things in a new territory that was all their own! Tommaso's definitely in his own space here – soaring out on titles that include "Pastlife Flashbacks", "Solitary Orbiter", "Melting Spheres", "Get Set Free", "Fly", and "Team Ball". CD

A tight trumpeter with a really fresh sound – strong, soulful, and equally well-suited to funky tunes and more freewheeling numbers! The set's brimming over with soul – and the range of musicians changes with each different tune – although Fender Rhodes features on most numbers, and sets up a core flow that's just great for the way that Mat Cappy approaches his horn. The mix of electric energy and acoustic voice reminds us a bit of the great Brad Upton records from a dozen years back – and Cappy's definitely got the strength to situation himself in a legacy that includes earlier soulful trumpeters who worked in such a mode – like Donald Byrd in the 70s, or Tom Browne at the start of the 80s. Titles include "East Philly", "Phoenix", "Church & State", "Eight Five Six", and "Sacramento". CD

Jared Sims has a great way of making a baritone sax open up and groove – sliding in here alongside Hammond and guitar that give the whole record a late 60s soul jazz vibe – and the sort of setting you're not usually likely to hear with baritone! Sims takes his time, and uses the horn in nicely chunky ways – which really fit the equally chunky rhythms laid down by the combo – which features Nina Ott on organ, Steve Fell on guitar, Chris Lopes on bass, and Jared Seabrook on drums. Given that the set features both bass and organ, there's a very nice bottom that really suits the baritone – on titles that include "Seeds Of Shihab", a tribute to Sahib Shihab – plus "Offer For Wilson", "Ghost Guest 1979", "Forest Hills", and "Tower Of Fazenda". A tight little duo who don't seem to need anyone else – given the tremendous power of their work on drums and Hammond B-3! These guys are funky jazz at the core, but also open to lots more ideas too – and really blow us away with their work here, which seems to include no other instrumentation besides organ and drums – yet makes us feel like there's a much larger group working on the album! Both artists have a legacy that includes lots of years on their instruments, and stints with bigger acts – but here on their own, they don't need to answer to anyone else at all – as they take to the skies on the power of funky drums and Hammond.
