✨✧ Rita Lee & Tutti FruttiFruto Proibido ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Forbidden Fruit from the great Rita Lee – a record that has her working with the Tutti Frutti combo, a line that's decidedly more mainstream than her more famous group, Os Mutantes – but one who also really let Rita focus on her newly-developed title for putting over a very catchy tune! The group bring more of a rock-heavy finish to the record than some of Rita's later work – and the guitars and vocals are nicely compressed down in the production – maybe a bit like some of the best Brit mainstream work of the mid 70s – an approach that works well for Lee, and maybe even makes some of the music feel as much like a commentary on mainstream rock as much as catchy tuneful work headed for the charts. Titles include "O Toque", "Ovelha Negra", "Pirataria", "Dancar Pra-nao Dancar", and "Carto Postal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva/Acorde (Brazil), 1988. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". LP, Vinyl record album

Righteous sounds from Rita Marley – a set that's one of her best-remembered albums, and done in a well-crafted style that definitely lives up to the Marley family name! The set was recorded at Tuff Gong, with a lean quality and laidback groove that lets Rita really step out front on vocals – and titles include "A Jah Jah", "That's The Way", "Good Morning Jah", "Easy Sailing", "One Draw", "Who Feels It Knows It", "Thank You", and "Play Play". Hard to deny the lasting power of this crucial album from The Beatles – a set that unleashed some of their trippiest sounds and most tender moments too! The mix of wit and honesty is wonderful – and the sonic range is dynamic as the archetypal cover image – a package that's had an undeniable impact on modern music for the past few decades! Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "She's Leaving Home", "Lovely Rita", "When I'm Sixty Four", "A Day In The Life", and "Fixing A Hole". Leo CuypersLeo Cuypers ... LP
BASF (Netherlands), 1972. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Rare solo material from pianist Leo Cuypers – a really wonderful set that gives us a chance to hear his talents in a completely unfettered setting! We know Cuypers best from some of his efforts in groups, and it's a great change to hear him here on his own – working through some amazing original compositions that are filled with life and feeling! At some points, he's got all the wit, energy, and sharp edges of contemporary Misha Mengelberg – but at other times, there's this lyrical cohesion to his music that almost reminds us of the most tuneful moments of Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett – an obvious great range of sounds to come from one player in such a small space – which makes the album possibly the greatest illustration of Cuyper's genius we've ever heard. Titles include "Lovely Rita", "Monk's Raus", "Het Cowboylied Van Ome Piet", "One Million Dollar Song", "Tristano Song", and "Lovely Rita". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice lost late number from Art Pepper – a freewheeling set of tracks that really show the influence of John Coltrane on Pepper's work – cut with a quartet that includes George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on "blitz bass", and Carl Burnett on drums. The tracks are long, and two numbers have a really nice Latiny flair – with Art spinning out some aggressive solos on top of fast-running grooves, in a way you'd be surprised to hear on one of his albums from the time! A&M, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
This album set a new level for live music at the time – and is quite possibly one of the greatest presentation of Cocker's talents on record – a set that gives him plenty of space to open up, let loose, and really dig into his repertoire of soul-drenched work. The group on the album's quite tight – with Leon Russell on piano and guitar, Don Preston on rhythm guitar, Bobby Keys on tenor, and Chris Stainton on piano and organ – as well as a huge backing choir of musicians and soul singers backing Joe up, plus solo vocal performances by Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Don Preston, and others. Titles include a number of soul, rock, and R&B classics, plus originals by Russell and others. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jorge BenNegro E Lindo ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Jorge Ben – one that mixes samba soul with more baroque arrangements from the legendary Arthur Verocai! The record's got a different feel than some of Jorge's other work – almost a wider vision of music that ties his usual funky style to some of the more ambitious modes being explored by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo at the time – expressed here in some larger instrumental passages that shade the tunes lightly, while still letting Jorge step out strongly on vocals and the usual mix of tight percussion and raspy guitar. Titles include "Que Maravilha", "Rita Jeep", "Comanche", "Porque E Proibido Pisa Na Grama", "Cassius Marcelo Clay", "Palomaris", "Maria Domingas", and "Negro E Lindo". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful post-CTI work from Joe Farrell – a record that has him stretching out in the kind of long, flowing, and open tunes that have always been the strongest side of his work! The setting is mostly acoustic – save for a bit of electric piano on a few tracks – and players include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on bass, and Peter Erskine on drums – hitting some nice chunky rhythms on some of the album's best tracks, and keeping up the funky undercurrent that we always love in Farrell's work. Farrell himself plays tenor, soprano, and flute – and titles include "Sonic Text", "If I Knew Where You're At", "Sweet Rita Suite", "When You're Awake", and "The Jazz Crunch". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wicked post-Blue Note session from Bobby Hutcherson – one that's put together in a different way than his previous work, but still completely sublime throughout! The feel is almost to Hutcherson's earlier work what Woody Shaw's Columbia recordings were to his – tighter, with sharper production – yet still wonderfully soulful and with a strong sense of spirit. Key soloists include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Hubert Laws on flute – and the record also features George Cables on acoustic and electric piano, Cedar Walton on acoustic piano, and Eddie Marshall on drums. Includes the lovely "Sweet Rita Suite", plus "Circle", "Secrets Of Love", and "Bouquet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ People's ChoicePeople's Choice ... LP
Casablanca, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An extra clubby effort from People's Choice – a record that has them moving over to Casablanca after their albums for Philly International, but still staying strongly in their groove, thanks to production from Tom Moulton at Sigma Sound Studios! Tracks are upbeat, but funky – mixing the lead vocals and keyboards of Frank Brunson with some even more soulful female backing voices, and an overall groove that's in the tight Sigma mode that was starting to show up strongly at Salsoul. Tracks are long, but less disco than funky club – and the mix of male and female vocals together often creates a slightly righteous feel that you don't always get on this sort of record. Titles include "Warm Nights Soft Lights", "Bad Dancin Rita", "My Feet Won't Move", "Special Things For You", "If I Knew Then What I Know Now", "You Out To Be Dancin", and "Sweeter Than Honey". A cool 60s live set from Jair Rodrigues – one that captures his vocals with a raspy, earthy edge that's really great – mixed up here both in upbeat jazzy samba backings, and some folksier moments too! The album has all the great energy that Jair brought to his famous live dates with Elis Regina – and he seems to borrow a lot from her style on the album's groovers, of which there are many! Titles include "Contracanto", "A Rita", "Vem Menina", "Disparada", "Rapaz Da Moda", "Inae", "Deixa Como Esta", and "No Balanco Do Jequibau". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousO Casarao – Trilha Sonora Original Da Novela ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work by some of the greatest Brazilian singers and songwriters of the 70s! The material was recorded exclusively for this TV soundtrack in 1976 – and although the scope of the story stretches back to the early 20th century, the feel of most of the material is prime mid 70s MPB. Overall, this is one of the more introspective titles in this series of classic Som Livre soundtracks – as you might guess from the range of material and performers. Titles include "So Louco" by Gal Costa, "Latin Lover" by Joao Bosco, "O Casarao" by Dori Caymmi, "Coisas Da Vida" by Rita Lee, "Tangara" by Coral Som Livre, "A Dor A Mais" by Francis Hime, "Retrato" by Sueli Costa, and "Carolina" by Aquarius. A great entry in the Chess Heritage Series at the end of the 60s – one that features rare 50s Chicago recordings by Elmore James, plus some even more obscure sides by lesser-known singer John Brim! James' style is well known, and well-executed here – rough and raw, but with a good sense of focus – on tracks that include "Whose Muddy Shoes", "I See My Baby", "My Best Friend", "The Sun Is Shining", "Madison Blues", and "Talk To Me Baby". Brim is great too – a singer we didn't know before this record, with an all-out kind of quality in his voice that's almost a bit like some of the rougher soul of the 60s at times. ✨✧ Cabrerita Y Sus IdeasSobre Salsa ... LP
Alegre, 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mad little album put together by producer Joe Cain – and featuring the Ideas group of trumpeter Cabrerita! Cabby's got a sound that's pretty full-on – often blowing for all he's worth, and really taking things over the top of the tunes. The album's got one 6 minute descarga number that really has him jamming with the percussion and piano of the group, and even the shorter tracks on the album have a pretty uptempo and lively feel. Juan Coronel sings on a number of tunes, and titles include "A La Loma De Belen", "Soy El Loco", "Sobre Salsa", and "Dime Si O No". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dr JohnGris Gris ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Dr John at his freaky deaky best – working here in a mindblowing mix of New Orleans roots and late 60s psych – all served up in some heady studio space and instrumental touches! The sound's unlike anything that ever went before – and is way better here than on some of John's later, straighter material – clearly the work of years of creative genius, as the Doctor, Mac Rebennack, draws on both his heritage from the Crescent City, and his years of work in the underground rock scene in LA! Harold Batiste handled the arrangements – and the record really paves the way for so many famous LA/New Orleans albums to come in the 70s – but never with results this mindblowingly trippy. The tracks are wild, funky, and messed-up New Orleans R&B filtered through a heavy dose of psychedelics – and titles include "Mama Roux", "Croker Courtbullion", "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", and the original version of "I Walk On Guilded Splinters". Atco, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Jan Akkerman bridges many worlds here – deftly stepping between spare acoustic guitar modes and some much more dynamic electric ones – but all with a sense of care and vision that really makes the record come together! The set begins with a few themes from John Dowland, updated by Akkerman, but still played with an ancient sort of vibe – one that leads into some very cool fusion moments that mix centuries-old aesthetics with the modern – creating a sense of anachronism that really keeps things interesting. Gene Orloff handled some of the larger arrangements, but the focus is always on Akkerman's deft work on the guitar – and titles include "Britannia", "House Of The King", "Javeh", "Lammy", and "A Fantasy". ✨✧ Aurita Y Su Conjunto (Aurita Castillo)Chambacu ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Mississippi, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums ever issued on the legendary Discos Fuentes label – and that's saying a lot, given how many unusual albums the company put out! This set's got a core Colombian groove in the rhythms – very much in the rootsy style that the company was making a name for in the 60s – great percussion, a nice raw edge in the production, and that slight variation in groove that made Colombian music a really refreshing change from the sounds of Havana and New York! Yet the real difference here is that the singer is a kid – the lovely Aurita pictured on the cover – a vocalist who's got this unusual depth for someone her age, this rawness at times that really comes across in a striking way – almost the unbridled energy and emotion that you'd never hear from an adult. That quality livens up the grooves in this really unusual way – all the charms of a vintage Discos Fuentes album, but with a very different spin! Titles include "El Vaquero", "Las Polleras", "Mompoxina", "Chambacu", "Festival En Guarare", "Carino Lindo", and "Lamento De Sirena". LP, Vinyl record album

Mississippi, Late 1980s/Early 1990s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Dig Tuareg guitar? Then you should find plenty here to really expand your listening palette, and in a nicely different way – as these older cuts from Mauritania show a similar use of electric guitar over long-spun rhythms – often cyclical and hypnotic, especially when the musician turns up the fuzz! The Saharan nation really has a way with the guitar – and here, the styles vary nicely, along with the variety of artists included in the set – really expanding our understanding of the music, and in a way that's as groovy as it possibly can be. The set comes with a great booklet of notes – in true Mississippi style – and titles include "Wezin" by Luleide Ould Dendenni, "Banjey" by Kebrouh, "L'Ensijab" by Ateg Ould Syed, "Wezin" by Jeich Ould Chighaly, "Moulana Laa Moulana" by Baba Ould Hembara & Mamma Mint Hembara, "El Horr & Az-Zrag" by Mohammed Cheikh Ould Syed, and "Guelbi Vatimetou" by Mohammed Guitar & Sbeyniat. Art FarmerAztec Suite (first cover) ... LP
United Artists, 1959. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A rare Latin outing from trumpeter Art Farmer – one that has him working with the mighty Cuban arranger Chico O'Farrill! The grooves here are hardly "Aztec", as Chico brings a hip postwar vibe to the session – a blend of American jazz and Latin rhythms that's totally great, and played by an all-star array of players conducted by Al Cohn! Side one of the record features the extended "Aztec Suite" – an ambitious number that begins with modern moments that are somewhere in a space between Stan Kenton and Ralph Burns' experiments of this nature, but which always has Farmer's trumpet as the center focus. Side two features tracks that are a bit more conventional Latin jazz – still played by the bigger group, but with an even stronger sense of swing! Titles include "Aztec Suite", "Heat Wave", "Drume Negrita", "Alone Together", "Woody N You", and "Delirio". LP, Vinyl record album

(Black label pressing, with a deep groove. Vinyl is nice and clean, but has a click for about three minutes on side two.)

Shamek Farrah & Norman PersonShamek Farrah & Norman Person Live ... LP
Heritage Industries/BBE (UK), Late 1980s/Early 1990s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Saxophonist Shamek Farrah is best known for a pair of legendary 70s albums on the Strata East label – but he was still working strongly in the American jazz underground for years after that – as you'll hear on this brilliant batch of live recordings from the end of the 80s! The album was initially only issued as a cassette sold at gigs, and it shows Farrah sounding wonderful in the company of trumpeter Norman Person – blowing alto and bringing the fire he had on his 70s spiritual jazz recordings – as he and Person work in a few different groups, alongside some especially great piano work from either David Durrah or Sonelius Smith – both players with strong legacies of their own! Garry Hammon joins the pair on tenor on two tracks, Marvin Neal on trombone on one, and the final track is a trio number without Farrah, showing wonderful phrasing from Person next to Smith's piano. All titles are nice and long – and tunes include "Negative Forces", "Aisha", "Footprints", "Timeless Beginning", and "I Remember Clifford". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny RollinsSaxophone Colossus ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". WarGalaxy ... LP
MCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A massive jammer from War – and a record that brought the group to a whole new generation of listeners – as well as a good number of later fans who discovered some of these jams in the club! The groove here isn't disco, but this tightening up of War's sweet jamming vibe – almost given a sort of Mizell Brothers twist here, with a focus on sharper rhythms, but still plenty of space for instrumental flourishes over the top. Tracks are long and open, but in different ways than the early years – and there's some rhythmic elements on the record that really have the group trying out something new – and definitely finding a sweet spot in the process! The whole thing's great – and titles include the great extended instrumental "The Seven Tin Soldiers", plus "Hey Senorita", "Baby Face", "Galaxy", and "Sweet Fighting Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still in the shrink with hype sticker and round sticker spot. Includes the heavy inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire ... LP
Warner, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Earth, Wind & Fire's first album – recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Burbank label pressing – a nice copy! Cover has a small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Loose EndsLittle Spice ... LP
MCA, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really nice batch of early 80s soul from Loose Ends – one of the best-remembered groups who were making strong soul music in Britain in the period – but who actually recorded this excellent first album at Philadelphia's Alpha Studios! Making the record in Philly was a wise decision – the sounds range from classic-level slow jams, to solid modern soul, to touches of electro – plus some more dancefloor-oriented groovers – coming across like work of deft scene veterans rather than a full length debut for the group! The songs were written by the band who, at that time, included Jane Eugene, Carl McIntosh and Steve Nichol – and titles include "Hangin On A String", "Choose Me", "Music Takes Me Higher", "Dial 999", "Tell Me What You Want", "A Little Spice", "So Much Love", and "Let's Rock". Prestige, 1971. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the first records ever as a leader from funky drummer Idris Muhammad – a set that was cut right at the same time Idris was burning up the kit on his classic jazz funk sessions with other Prestige label players! The groove here is tight, funky, and very much in the mode that Muhammad laid down for other bigger soloists – a solid, socking sound that was the early 70s inheritance of the "Popcorn" funk groove of the late 60s. Players here are all great – and include Melvin Sparks on guitar, Harold Mabern on electric piano, and Virgil Jones on trumpet – and tracks include great covers of "Express Yourself" and "Super Bad", plus "Wander" and "Soulful Drums". ✨✧ Pax Nicholas & The Netty FamilyNa Teef Know De Road Of Teef ... LP
Tabansi (Nigeria), 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An Afro Funk treasure from the 70s – a rare album recorded by Pax Nicholas, a singer and percussionist who was part of Fela's legendary Africa 70 band! The album's got a sound that definitely echoes that heritage, but with a groove that's pretty weird too – more stripped down than most of Fela's work, with a thin keyboard part that often pulsates under the horns, creating an offbeat, edgey vibe in the music! Nicholas' groove is almost like taking Fela, and putting it through an odd sort of filter – one that turns things slightly sideways, and brings a really fresh sound to more familiar Afro Funk modes – kind of with the same other-worldly feel we love in some Ethiopian work of the time. Tracks are all nice and long – and plenty jamming – and titles include "Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef", "Ataa Onukpa", "Na Six Feet", and "You". LP, Vinyl record album

Coco, 1974. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from Charlie Palmieri – and one of his oddest! The "electro" in the title refers to a strange tinny organ that Charlie plays on many cuts on the record, a cool little instrument that gives the songs a nice twist. The backing's pretty great in the classic Coco Records mode – with strong salsa grooving, and a list of players that includes Tito Puente, Manny Oquendo, Roberto Roena, Cortijo, Cachao, and Andy Gonzalez. The record features a groovy little funk number called "The Taxi Driver" – plus Latin numbers like "Para Caracas Me Voy", "Maracaibo Oriental", "Salazon", and "Las Negritas De Carnaval". Virrey (Peru), 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An Afro-Peruvian classic, and a folkloric set that really gets at the complicated modes of the genre! There's plenty going on here, but always in a relatively organic way – an unusual blend of Spanish-styled guitar, earthy percussion, and vocal passages that evoke styles from island cultures in Cuba, Haiti, and even Cape Verde! The real mystery is how these elements came into play on the other side of South America – and with such a timeless quality that the record feels far more ancient than the 1973 date of its release – maybe like some of the Discos Marcos Pereira releases in Brazil at the same time. Titles include "Cancion Para Ekue", "El Payande", "Negrito De Donde Vienes", "Ollita Noma", "Toro Mata", and "Pobre Negrita". LP, Vinyl record album

Smooth and funky fusion from Lee Ritenour – top-shelf all the way, and handled with a really soulful groove, thanks to production from the legendary Skip Drinkwater! Lee's all over the top of the guitar in true "Captain Fingers" style, and Skip makes sure he's got plenty going on underneath, too – with an all-star assemblage of players that includes Harvey Mason on drums, Patrice Rushen on keyboards, Dennis Budimir on guitar, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Ernie Watts on saxes. The keyboards groove as nicely as the guitars (thanks Patrice!), and titles include "Margarita", "Fly By Night", "Dolphin Dreams", "Captain Fingers", and "Sun Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Early work from Yma Sumac – with that moody mix of other worldly vocals and semi-Latin instrumentation that made her a popular one with the early exotic crowd. Yma runs up and down the vocal scale, while Moises Vivanco leads the band in a set of crashing dramatic orchestrations with a Peruvian feel. ✨✧ Three SunsOn A Magic Carpet ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the catalog of The Three Suns – one of those records that shines even more than their dozens of other albums, thanks to a tightly syncopated groove! As with other sides by the trio, the music here is from a blend of organ, accordion, and guitar – plus well-chosen other instruments used sparingly – but there's also a bit of a bottom groove to the record too, supplied by loosely used electric basslines that sort of buoy up the Suns' sound, and push them away from outdated modes of earlier years. The approach is evocative and often grooving in a "Baby Elephant Walk" sort of way – and titles here include "Fleur De Paree", "Moritat", "High Noon", "Terry Theme", "Canadian Sunset", "Ruby", and "Meet Mr Callaghan". A pretty great little live set – recorded at the Montreux Jazz fest in 1973, and featuring one of the better McCoy Tyner groups of the time! The album's a key set in McCoy's stretching out after the passing of Coltrane – a record that draws strongly from his 60s spiritual heritage, but pushes nicely into the next generation – free, but never too free, and really filled with soul and spirit throughout! A key sound of the set comes from saxophonist Azar Lawrence – who plays both soprano and tenor on the date – and rhythm in the group is from Joony Booth on bass and Alphonse Mouzon on drums, both of whom really kick things into gear. Tracks are all pretty long, and titles include Tyner's 3 part "Enlightenment Suite", plus "Presence", "Nebula" and "Walk Spirit Talk Spirit". LP, Vinyl record album
