✨✧ Etta JamesTell Mama (180 gram – gold vinyl mono pressing) ... LP
Cadet/4 Men With Beards, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unique album from the great Etta Jones – a session recorded down in Muscle Shoals, and not in Chicago – a setting that gives James an extra sort of deep soul power! The backing is nicely different than some of the other Chess material – killer work from the legendary Fame Studios lineup that included Barry Beckett on organ, Charles Chalmers on tenor, and Roger Hawkins on drums – all coming together with the great Rick Hall at the production helm! Etta's back in hard-belting R&B-tinged territory here – a bit more sophisticated than the 50s, with a good mix of hard soul numbers and ballads, opening up in some southern territory that really suits her well. Titles include "The Same Rope", "Watch Dog", "Tell Mama", "I'd Rather Go Blind", "Just A Little Bit", and "Don't Lose Your Good Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kendrick LamarTo Pimp A Butterfly ... LP
Interscope, 2015. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Kendrick Lamar takes wider creative left turns than ever before on To Pimp A Butterfly – with a funk steeped production style that filters tried-and-true P Funk influences through leftfield modern beatcraft styles, inspired by cats like Madlib to Thundercat, the latter of whom is an official contributor. Fresh material from an increasingly pivotal figure – who may not be revolutionizing the game on the level of the heavy critical praise he's heaped with, but he's certainly marching to his own beat, rather than chasing hits! Includes "Wesley's Theory" with George Clinton & Thundercat, "King Kunta", "These Walls" with Bilal, Anna Wise & Thundercat, "Aright", "For Sale?", "Institutionalized" with a Slick Rick-homage of a guest verse by Snoop Dogg (sign us up for any record that gives props to The Ruler...and extra points for transplanting that style of flow to Compton), "Momma", "Hood Politics", "The Blacker The Berry", "How Much A Dollar Cost" feat James Fauntleroy & Ronald Isley, "Mortal Man" and more. ✨✧ BoulevardsGroove ... LP
Captured Tracks, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nice modern take on classic dancefloor-ready funky soul from Jamil Rashad – aka Boulevards –delivering a genuinely tight, irresistible groove worthy of the title! The paths Boulevards travels were paved 70s and 80s funk titans from Earth Wind & Fire at their leanest, to early 80s Prince and Rick James and beyond on funky soul tip – along with some crisp, bumping electro influences from early hip hop producers – but he give it a fresh vibe – thanks incredibly effective songcraft and charismatic vocals. This is straight-up fun, pretty much irresistible effort! Includes "Set The Tone", "Got To Go", "Up On Your Love", "Move & Shout", "Cold Call", "Running Back", "Patience", "The Spot", "Talk To Me", "Tender", "Love & Dance" and "Weekend Love". ✨✧ Pat PatrickSound Advice ... LP
Saturn/Art Yard (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums ever issued by Sun Ra's Saturn Records label – and one of the few dates to ever feature baritone saxophonist Pat Patrick as a leader – Sun Ra's longtime partner in the Arkestra, and a hell of a player on his own! The record is a heavy baritone date – with Rene McLean, Charles Davis, James Ware, Reynold Scott, and George Barrow joining Patrick on the lead instrument, plus a bit of flute – blowing at a level that makes the whole thing feel like one of the best creative ensemble projects on Strata East from the period – very jazzy, but also reaching for lots of new ideas too! The music is a lot more soulful than Ra's usual work – less outside overall, but in a good way – and the group also features a young Hilton Ruiz on piano, plus Jon Hart on bass, Steve Solder on drums, and Babafemi Humphreys on congas. Titles include "Funny Time", "Uptighttedness", "Eastern Vibrations", "Sabia", and "The Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

BeyonceLemonade (180 gram colored vinyl) ... LP
Columbia, 2016. New Copy 2LP ... About September 1, 2017
It's a long long way from Destiny's Child – as Beyonce comes on here with a righteous power she's never had before – much more message-oriented, and with larger agenda than the catchy pop of her youth! The album got quite a buzz before release, and definitely lives up to that promise – certainly darker, and deeper than anything we've heard before from the singer – almost her own move into some of the territory that D'Angelo hit in recent years, although with a more mainstream R&B construction to some of the tunes. The record features guest work from Jack White, Kendrick Lamarr, The Weeknd, and James Blake – but Beyonce is clearly the main focus throughout – on titles that include "Pray You Catch Me", "Daddy Lessons", "Forward", "6 Inch", "Don't Hurt Yourself", "Hold UP", "Freedom", "All Night", and "Formation". Sun RaLive at Montreux ... LP
Inner City, 1976. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". Sun RaSun Song (aka Jazz By Sun Ra) ... LP
Transition/Delmark, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any similarities to work going on in New York or LA – a voice that was all his own, and already quite boldly stated, even in these early years! The format might be somewhat familiar – an ensemble with horns and rhythm – but the overall execution really starts to open up as the album moves on – with odd phrasings, timings, and unusual moments that live up to all the promise you might expect from Ra. Even Mingus and some of his better-known contemporaries weren't heading in these directions in the mid 50s – and the record is a proud showcase of the freedoms that players were often accorded in the less-trafficked Chicago scene of the time. Horns include Art Hoyle & Dave Young on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone, Julian Priester on trombone, and James Scales on alto sax – and rhythm includes Jim Herndon on tympani, Robert Barry on drums, Wilbur Green on electric bass, and a young Richard Evans on acoustic bass! Titles include "Brainville", "Call For All Demons", "Transition", "Lullaby For Realville", "Street Named Hell", "New Horizons", "Fall Off The Long", "Possession", and "Future". ✨✧ Philip Cohran & The Artistic Heritage EnsembleSpanish Suite ... LP
Zulu/Tizona, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great lost work from the legendary Phil Cohran and his Artistic Heritage Ensemble – a composition that was recorded during the group's late 60s years on the Chicago scene – but which has never been released until now! The album stands beautifully alongside the group's self-titled classic and their tribute to Malcolm X – and like those amazing records, this one has a feel that's all its own – an exploration of Moorish elements in Spanish culture – which comes off as a Latin-inflected sound with African roots! The lineup here is similar to other Cohran classics – Donald Myrick on baritone sax, Charles James Williams on alto, Eugene Easton on tenor, Charles Handy on trumpet, Willie Woods on trombone, Aaron Dodd on tuba, Pete Cosey on guitar, Henry Gibson on congas, and Louis Satterfield on bass – a mix of musicians that includes members with Sun Ra and Earth Wind & Fire listed in their resumes! Cohran's vision in the suite is wonderful – and the music has all the depth and righteous energy of his self-titled record, but a bit more Latin fire too – a beautiful blend that really makes us appreciate his genius even more than before, and which finally gives us another record of his to love after all these years. Dee Felice TrioIn Heat ... LP
King/Bethlehem, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A killer album of soul jazz piano instrumentals – produced by James Brown! The Dee Felice Trio were a groovy combo from Cincinnati, and James Brown took a shine to them at some point in the late 60s. They backed James on one record, but their big moment was this album – which had James producing, and the group grooving nicely on some hard piano jammers! The sound's a lot more stripped-down than usual for James, but the groove is very nice! Includes an excellent funky version of "There Was A Time", a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", and the tracks "Summer In The City", "In Heat", "Both Sides Now", and "Never". Darn hard to find, too! LP, Vinyl record album

John GordonErotica Suite ... LP
Strata East/Superfly (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About November 1, 2017
One of the rarest albums on Strata East – a great later label effort under the leadership of trombonist John Gordon – with work by James Spaulding on alto and flute, John Miller on piano and keyboards, Waymond Reed on trumpet, Lyle Atkinson on bass, and Frank Derrick on drums and bells! The whole thing's got a very spiritual feel – and features the long "Erotica Suite", plus "Ora Lee Tingle", "Blue Na", and "Neleh". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Karriem RigginsHeadnod Suite ... LP
Stones Throw, 2017. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A set that's got a lot more going on than you might expect from the "headnod" title – as Karriem Riggens is at his most dynamic here – offering up way more than just the hip hop instrumentals promised by the album's cover sticker! There's definitely a hip hop aesthetic in place, but it's probably more apt to think of these tracks as instrumental funk productions – heavy on beats, but also laced with lots of other interesting elements too – sometimes a bit of keyboards, sometimes a fuzzy bassline, sometimes some vocal snippets – and a few spots even feature guest appearances by Geri Allen and James Poyser on piano, and Robert Hurst and Derrick Hodge on bass. Titles include "Pay-gio", "Suite Poetry", "Chop Chop", "Other Side Of The Track", "Trombone Love", "Crystal Stairs", "Detroit Funk", "Oddness", "Tandoor Heat", and "Bahia Dreamin".
