✨✧ Poznanska Orkiestra Rozrywkowa PRITVButik (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soaring Polish instrumentals from the 70s – sound library work, but very aware of the disco changes taking place in the American mainstream of the time – all of which makes for tunes that often have a sort of funky cop/crime soundtrack vibe overall! The group have clearly heard some of the best records from Rhythm Heritage at the time, and craft their own take on the blend of clubby rhythms and larger orchestrations – with a solo guitar line on one track, a tenor on another, or well-done keyboard line on one more – all of which makes for a record that's funkier and groovier than you might expect! Titles include "Kaczor Globtrotter", "Ko Jo", "Theme From Rosemary's Baby", "Stereo Track", "Boutique", and "Tranzytem Przez Zycie". CD features three bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ AC Soul Symphony (Dave Lee/Joey Negro)Metamorphosis ... CD
Z Records (UK), 2023. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest projects we've ever heard from the mighty Dave Lee – and that's saying a lot, given all the excellent records he's given us under the name of Joey Negro, Sunburst Orchestra, and other related projects! Here, Dave mixes his keen ear for funky club with some of the great cop/crime grooves of the mid 70s – particularly the kind of work that might have backed police programs on the small screen, almost as if Lee is channeling the classic work of Rhythm Heritage for SWAT, then taking things in a whole new direction! The "symphony" in the group's name is very well put, as there's soaring strings on many numbers – an even fuller feel than on some of Dave's other projects, but with equally tight grooves at the core. Titles include "Six Billion Dollar Man", "Philly Avengers", "Windy City Theme", "The Mystery The Moment", "Tradewinds", "Losing My Mind At The Disco", "K-Jee", "The Talented Mr Adams", and "It's Got To Be Love". ✨✧ Ethnic Heritage EnsembleAncestral Song ... CD
Silkheart (Sweden), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of a handful of great recordings by this second generation AACM group. The group's a trio featuring Kahil El'Zabar, Ed Wilkerson and Joseph Bowie, with a sound that rolls along nicely with a firm, afro-centric rhythm at its core. The compositions are beautiful and spare, with light melodies and extended improvisations by Wilkerson and Bowie on tenor and trombone over the pulsing rhythms. Six numbers in all "Papa's Bounce", "Loose Pocket", "Three And A Half", "Kahil's Blues", "Ancestral Song" and "Mamma's House". CD

✨✧ McCoy TynerEnlightenment ... CD
Milestone, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great little live set – recorded at the Montreux Jazz fest in 1973, and featuring one of the better McCoy Tyner groups of the time! The album's a key set in McCoy's stretching out after the passing of Coltrane – a record that draws strongly from his 60s spiritual heritage, but pushes nicely into the next generation – free, but never too free, and really filled with soul and spirit throughout! A key sound of the set comes from saxophonist Azar Lawrence – who plays both soprano and tenor on the date – and rhythm in the group is from Joony Booth on drums and Alphonse Mouzon on drums, both of whom really kick things into gar. Tracks are all pretty long, and titles include Tyner's 3 part "Enlightenment Suite", plus "Presence", "Nebula" and "Walk Spirit Talk Spirit". CD

✨✧ VariousSouthport Weekender Vol 2 – Joe Claussell & Blaze ... CD
Susu (UK), 2004. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The sound of Southport is the sound of New York – at least in this tasty twin-disc set, which features a CD each of mixes by Blaze and Joe Claussell! Blaze's mix has an ethereal cosmic soul approach – one that draws from their own rich heritage in dancefloor work, and which crackles and burns with an earthy undercurrent that we really really love! Joe's mix is titled Different Tones – and really seems to emphasize the "tones" in that title – as tunes groove warmly next to each other with a range of cross-cultural influences that make for a variety of different rhythms, sounds, and colors that trip through the tunes nicely! The set features a total of 25 tracks on 2CDs – and titles include "Moonwalk" by Blaze, "C'est La Vie" by Kim English, "Journey To The Center" by Chris Brann, "Find A Way" by Divinity, "Emballa (Louie Vega with Jaffa mix)" by Cirque Du Soliel, "Love Is On The Way" by Louie Vega with Blaze, "Feelin Fine (Ricanstruction rmx)" by Markus Enochson, "My Words (original Glide mix)" by Kenny Carvajal with Jon Pierce, "Hiya Luv" by Kenny Bobien, "Don't Say Love" by Soul Switch with Meli'sa Morgan, and "Tumba Rhythm" by Bolla. ✨✧ Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

✨✧ Orchestre Poly RythmoMadjafalao ... CD
Because (France), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo – a group who've lost none of their power over the years, and who bristle with as much energy here as on their classic albums of the 70s! In fact, there may well be a more-classic vibe going on here, compared to the group's sound as it changed over the years – as the production is simple and straightforward, and free of both any attempt to try for a world music crossover hit, or any effort to "authenticate" the group with a too-rootsy sound. Instead, the whole thing just perfectly captures that wicked current of funk that the group always had at their best – a transformation of the Latin influences that were hitting west Africa in the late 60s, with more of the tightness inspired by James Brown – yet never in a way that's slavish to any influence at all. Titles include "Heritage", "Finlin Ho", "Migbe", "Omonyi", "Baba Djide", "Madjafalao", and "Wangnigni". CD

Kahil El Zabar's Ethnic Heritage EnsembleOpen Me – A Higher Consciousness Of Sound & Spirit ... CD
Spiritmuse (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Kahil El'Zabar reinvigorated his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble a few years back, and the results have been a really stunning reworking of his legacy on the Chicago scene in the 80s – especially on the great run of albums on the Spiritmuse label! All the rhythmic, hypnotic qualities of Kahil's past music informs these sounds – but there's also maybe more majesty and more spiritual power overall – as El'Zabar's work on a variety of percussion instruments is matched with bold baritone work from Alex Harding, and tremendous trumpet from Corey Wilkes! Kahil's vocals are also fantastic – an element that he never used this strongly in the past, and which open up a lost possible career as a soul singer from the more righteous side of the spectrum. The set also features work from James Sanders on violin and viola, and Ishmael Ali on cello – both musicians who add to the majesty of the music – on titles that include "Burundi", "All Blues", "Can You Find A Place", "Great Black Music", "Open Me", "Kari", "Return Of The Lost Tribe", and "Passion Dance". ✨✧ Miles DavisFilles De Kilimanjaro (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Jazz Heritage, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A dark blend of acoustic and electric modes from Miles Davis – a set that still has him working with elements of the classic 60s quintet, but which also brings in a stronger emphasis on electric piano too! The rhythms here are really fantastic – ready to burst forth into a whole new direction, yet still not hitting the Bitches Brew level of freedom – and drummer Tony Williams may well be the real star of the set for his tremendous work on the kit – even though, as stated, the album's got some heavy electric piano contributions both from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea! All titles feature Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Tony Williams on drums – and the titles with Herbie feature Ron Carter on bass, while the rest with Chick Corea feature Dave Holland. Titles include "Frelon Brun", "Tout De Suite", "Petits Machins", "Mademoiselle Mabry", and "Filles De Kilimanjaro". CD also features a bonus alternate take of "Tout De Suite CD

✨✧ VariousSoul Of A Nation – Afro-Centric Visions In The Age Of Black Power – Underground Jazz, Street Funk, & The Roots Of Rap 1968 to 1979 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the righteous current of energy that swept through American music at the end of the 60s – that huge wave of knowledge and political inspiration that still stands as one of our favorite moments in jazz and soul! The Civil Rights generation had gotten some things accomplished, but not everything – and a new wave of action arose in various scenes of the underground – not just pushing the musical formats past anything that had happened before, but also doing so with a strong message of pride and empowerment! This collection surveys some of the best tracks of that moment – and also provides a great batch of historical notes to put the whole thing in context – done in collaboration with the book of the same name, but equally great as a soundtrack and document on its own. The package is overflowing with Dusty Groove classics – and titles include "Sweet Songs" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Surtal Ihklas" by Doug Carn, "Vibes From The Tribe" by Phil Ranelin, "Desert Fairy Princess" by Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, "Sounds From The Bush" by The Mandingo Griot Society with Don Cherry, "Is It Too Late" by Duke Edwards & The Young Ones, "Strong Men" by David McKnight, "Black Narcissus" by Joe Henderson, "Malcolm X" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, "Mother Of The Future" by Carlos Garnett, "Red Black & Green" by Roy Ayers, "African Rhythms" by Oneness Of Juju, and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. ✨✧ Blue MitchellBlue Mitchell Live ... CD
Just Jazz, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real lost bit of work from Blue Mitchell – and a great one too! The set was recorded live in 1976 – just south of San Francisco, with production by SF jazzman Pat Britt, and a lineup that included Bay Area players Mark Levine on piano, Smiley Winters on drums, and Mike Morris on tenor sax. The tunes are laidback and long – and given the mix of traditions at work here (from Winters' role in the avant world, to Levine's connection with Latin jazz, and Blue's soul jazz heritage) – the sound is quite striking, and features many fresh moments. Blue's trumpet really holds up well in the extended setting – blowing some wonderful exploratory lines – and a few of the tracks have a great darkly rhythmic undercurrent. Titles include "Portrait Of Jenny", "Pleasure Bent", "Sweet Smiley Winters", and "Something Old Something Blue". CD

✨✧ VariousHow The River Ganges Flows – Sublime Masterpieces Of Indian Violin 1933 to 1952 ... CD
Third Man, 1930s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of rare work pulled from a variety of different 78rpm singles – Indian classical music from the generation before Ravi Shankar and a few other artists gave it global exposure – with an especially strong focus on the use of the violin next to sitars and tablas! The violin is amazing – very stretched out and snakey – used maybe with some techniques of European heritage, but with a sonic result that's very very different – and a perfect fit for the rhythms and other instrumentation in the tracks! The collection is very well-done – similar to such projects on labels like Dust-To-Digital or Honest Jons – and titles include "Raga Thodi" by Gajanan Madhav Karnad, "Nagumomu Ganale (parts 1 & 2)" by Muthi & Masni, "Ragamalika Ragam Thanam (parts 1 & 2)" by Dwaram Venkatswamny Naidu, "Ikanaiana Raga Manirang" by Mysor Chowdiah, and the tracks "Raga Adana", "Thumri", "Raga Bageshree", "Raga Ahir Bhairi", and "Raga Sur Malha" by Paritosh Seal – clearly the star of the set! Also features two earlier, pre-classical tracks – "Thodi" and "Ragam Alapana" by Cunniah Naidu. CD

✨✧ Yusef LateefLive At Pep's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Impulse/Jazz Heritage, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by the mighty Yusef Lateef – and that's really saying a lot, given his fantastic legacy of albums! The set's a live one, which is a bit unusual in Lateef's catalog at this time – and the concert setting is perhaps a window onto some of his more expressive, experimental modes that didn't always show up on record, especially the Impulse studio sides he was recording at the time. Lateef's group is pure genius – with a young Mike Nock on piano, sounding all weird and dark, with amazing tones from his instrument – plus the great Richard Williams on trumpet, a player who always seems to bring something special to a record! The team of Ernie Farrow on bass and James Black on drums help create all these modal rhythms that are really fantastic – and Lateef himself blows tenor and flute, plus the more exotic reed instruments argol and shanai. Titles include "The Magnolia Triangle", "Sister Mamie", "Number 7", "The Weaver", and "Slippin' & Slidin'". This CD adds 3 long extra cuts to the original release! CD

✨✧ Clara MorenoMutante ... CD
Timewarp (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lovely set of dancefloor work from Clara Moreno – one that seems to take equal parts inspiration from the sounds of Rio, and from the sounds of the global club circuit! There's certainly a groove here that belies Clara's heritage in Brazilian music – but many of the tunes also bubble with traces of the globally-conscious rhythms that have been coming out of the New York, London, and Japanese scenes in recent years. Clara's vocals are especially sweet on the mellower tunes, but the uptempo ones still sound great too – and the album also features some guest work by Joe Claussell and Ashley Beedle. Titles include "Zazueira", "Banana", "When You Gonna Learn", "I Want You Here", "Mutante", "Partido Alto", "Hello Rio", "Feminina (Bambino & Samba mix)", and "Another Star". CD
