✨✧ Miles Davis with Sonny StittLive In Paris – 1960 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1960. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from a sometimes-overlooked chapter in the career of Miles Davis – a time when Sonny Stitt was briefly filling the tenor sax role that was more famously held by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter! Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Copeland (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBC/Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Titles include "Northwind", "Swords Of Gold", "Don't Despair", "Nothing Beautiful", "Song From Beads", "Untitled", "Interval", "Reflections", and "Durocher". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny GreenwichSun Song ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the great Sonny Greenwich – an open-toned guitarist with a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a Canadian player who never got much exposure down here in the US, but who really stands apart from most of the jazz guitarists of his generation! There's this unusual sense of color and phrasing that really makes Sonny stand out – chords that almost feel as if they're broken open and exposed from a Wes Montgomery sort of tightness – able to move with a sense of fluidity, but a unique sense of rhythm that's definitely Greenwich's own. The rest of the group here really match the spirit of his music – maybe more so than on any other record of his as a leader – a great lineup that includes Don Thompson on electric and acoustic piano, Rick Homme on bass, Terry Clarke on drums, and Clayton Johnson on percussion. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Peace Chant", "Lilly Lotus", "Parting", and "Starlight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sadik HakimSadik Hakim (London Suite) ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest moments ever from pianist Sadik Hakim – a player most people know for his contribution to the American bop scene of the late 40s – but an artist who grew even more strongly during his later years in Montreal! This album's a real highlight from that overlooked time in Hakim's career – a set that not only has the musician playing both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, but which also highlights his tremendous skill as a writer, too – with a richness that easily rivals the best on the European scene of the time – such as some of our favorite London jazz musicians, or the great work on MPS. Side one features the extended "London Suite" – a work that's poetic, but also pretty darn groovy too – and side two features on shorter compositions that include "Liliane", "Grey Cup Caper", and "Moon In Aquarius" – all carried off beautifully by a group that includes Al Khabyyr Sayyd Abdul on alto and flute, Billy Robinson on tenor, and Peter Leitch on guitar. Jimmy HyacintheJimmy Hyacinthe ... LP
Discogram/Return To Analog (Canada), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Jimmy Hyacinthe is posed on the cover like some 70s bluesman, but his music here is much more global overall – plenty of grooves that echo his origins in the Ivory Coast, but handled with qualities that are electric and a bit funky too! The rhythms almost feel Caribbean at times, especially on the uptempo cuts and the way they let the guitars, basslines, and horn parts intertwine – yet the record's also got some laidback moments that almost feel like they carry a bit of influence from southern soul! The whole thing is instrumental, with plenty of Jimmy's guitar in the mix – and titles include the long tracks "Maquis Lo", "Like Fe", "Yatchiminou", "Bla M'Be Oule Oule", and "Alie Soutchin". Les DifferentsLes Differents ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 24.99
Fantastic fuzz from a French Canadian combo of the 60s – one of the coolest garage bands we've ever heard from up north at the time, romping here with a style that's equal parts Sunset Strip and some of the hipper Parisian groups of the time! Lyrics are all in French, and the production has this nice sense of darkness that makes echo out of the organ lines, jangly guitar, and nice touches of fuzz – all flowing together with a style that sounds plenty magic all the way through, even if you can't always understand the lyrics. Some of the guys in the group were still teens at the time of recording, which you can hear in the youthful energy of the songs – and titles include "Je T'Aime", "Abandonne", "La Solitude", "Seul Sur Terre", "Je Ne Veux Plus", "Aimes Proudemment", and "Soyons Differents". ✨✧ Les JaguarsLes Jaguars Vol 2 (clear yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record with a sexy cover and a slinky sound to match – the rare second album from the cool French instrumental combo Les Jaguars – a 60s group who start in modes that resemble American surf guitar, but really take off into some great directions of their own! The style here is familiar – bass, two guitars, and drums – but the quality of the instrumentation gets nicely complex, and opens up way past catchy themes and references to sand and surf – as the group turn in mostly original tunes throughout, and have some especially great interplay between the two guitars – at a level that might normally be carried by an additional keyboard or tenor sax. The record's a hell of an instro rocker – way more so than you'd guess from the cheesecake cover – and titles include "Tourbillon", "Guitare Cha Cha", "Melle Yeye", "Guitare Strip", "Guitare Jet", "Dors Mon Amour", and "Jaguar Shake". Love Cry Want (Larry Young/Joe Gallivan/Stephen Nicholas)Love Cry Want ... LP
Lion/Return To Analog, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Rare material that was originally recorded in 1972 by organist Larry Young – some of his most outside material ever, and done with a bunch of young musicians who wail on all of these weird electronic instruments! The set's way wilder even than any of Young's albums that were issued at the time – including the classics with his group Fuel, or even his Lawrence of Newark album – and the album's got loads of wild, very noisy synth sounds and crazy percussion! The tunes come across as sheets and sheets of white noise – with Larry's organ going all over the place in freewheeling solos and groovy rhythm lines. Young plays Hammond, and other instrumentation includes Joe Gallivan on synth, percussion, drums, and steel guitar; Nicholas on guitar synth, ring modulator, hi-tension wires, wind, rain, and thunder (!); and Jimmy Molneiri on drums and percussion. Titles include "Love Cry", "Ancient Place"," Angels Wing", "Peace", and "Great Medicine Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ManeigeLes Porches ... LP
Harvest/Return To Analog (Canada), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully sensitive sounds from this really unique group – an instrumental combo, but one who don't really play jazz – and who also avoid some of the more jamming indulgences of some of their prog contemporaries too! Part of the special blend in their sound is the way they can work with higher ideas, but not huge egos – really bringing their concepts down to a more personal level, with instrumentation that includes flutes, saxes, and pianos from Alain Bergeron – plus guitar and piano from Jerome Langlois, piano and percussion from Vincent Langlois, bass from Yves Leonard, and drums and percussion from Gilles Schetagne. The group also add in a few extra elements at times – vibes, trumpet, and even a bit of strings – and the set features the long suites "Les Aventures De Saxinette Et Clarophone" and "Les Porches De Notre Dame" – and the shorter "La Grosse Torche" and "Chromo". ManeigeLibre Service ... LP
Polydor/Return To Analog (Canada), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 23.99
Great work from Maneige – a French Canadian group who work in an instrumental mode that's partly jazz, and partly prog – but very much their own sort of vibe! The group had already cut some other excellent records before this one, and they're razor-sharp throughout – tight, but never in any sort of smooth fusion way – in part because the music has a great sense of humanity, which comes especially from the flute and alto work of Alain Bergeron, whose solos really hang in the special space that the group created. There's both a drummer and percussionist on the set – next to piano, guitars, and bass – and those added elements really help give the music an organic quality, and offset the electric instrumentation. Titles include "Bagdad", "Celebration", "La Noce", "Miro Vibro", "Troizix", and "L'Envol Des Singes Latins". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ManeigeNi Vent Ni Nouvelle ... LP
Polydor/Return To Analog (Canada), 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Maneige maybe have a bit more fusion here than on their earliest albums, but they still also offer up plenty of instrumental rock elements as well – tight work from all the members of the group, often focused in a rhythmic way, and with breakout solos on guitar and alto sax! Some of the more sensitive qualities of their first few records are traded in for moments that are more compact, and really show the evolution of the members as musicians – yet the group also stay true to their sound by letting a few nice mellow moments flow into the mix as well. Titles include "Mambo Chant", "Douce Amere", "Time Square", "11 Julliet", "Les Folleries", "La Fin De L'Histoire", and "Le Gai Marvin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thelonious MonkLive In Paris 1961 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Thelonious Monk – a superbly-recorded live set from early 60s Paris – done with his legendary quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor! The music here is wonderful – tracks that are often quite long, and stretched out nicely from the Columbia Records material by the group – with especially long improvisations by Monk that really reignite our respect for his genius – and the kind of soulful solos from Rouse that are always a perfect match! The bass of John Ore is beautifully recorded too – maybe even more powerful here than usual – and Frankie Dunlop completes the group with wonderfully deft work on drums. Titles include "Well You Needn't", "Jackie-ing", "Hackensack", and "Rhythm A Ning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ OctobreLes Nouvelles Terres ... LP
Les Disques Zodiaque/Return To Analog (Canada), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A Canadian prog masterpiece from this key 70s group – and a record that's got some nicely understated elements that almost feel a bit more like some of the best European electric jazz acts of the time! There's definitely vocals on the record – sung by Pierre Flynn – but his use of piano and keyboards is even more striking, often with a spaciousness that brings a slight current of funk to the record at times, especially when he serves up Fender Rhodes passages that have that chunky quality we love from this period of the work of Marc Moulin. The group work with an added vocal group at points, to increase the majesty of the music – and titles include "Generation", "Voyage En Mer", "Violence", "Ma Chanson", "Les Nouvelles Terres", and "La Passe Du Grand Flambeau". SeompiWe Have Waited – Singles & Unreleased ... LP
Return To Analog/Lion (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
Seompi may not have been the first group to bring some wilder sounds to the scene down in Texas – but they're definitely one that are years ahead of their time, and work with a doom-heavy approach here that's very different than more conventional psych and fuzz! There's a very heady vibe to most tracks – darker even than hard rock, with moody production that makes the vocals and guitars sound especially spooky – which is maybe why most of these tracks were never issued at the time. Titles include "Summer's Comin On Heavy", "Almost In The Whole", "Slide Slide", "Lay On The Floor", "Awol/Elijah", "Question Of Nobility", and "We Have Waited". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter TessierBy Turning A Knob ... LP
Columbia/Return To Analog (Canada), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Peter Tessier turned plenty of knobs to make a record this great – which is maybe no surprise, given that he worked as an engineer in the Canadian branch of RCA Records in the early 70s! Pete definitely makes that legacy work for him – with really wonderful arrangements and sharp production that set a strong fire to illuminate his unique songs! The record's not really psych or prog, and Tessier's more raspy vocal style almost gives it more of the 70s personality of a singer like Lou Reed – while the songs echo singer/songwriter modes, but are executed with a lot more sonic complexity – almost in a way that feels like some of those 80s UK records that were influenced by psych, but come off sounding very different than the originals of the 60s. Titles include "I'll Never Know", "A Little More Rain", "Someday", "And On The Eighth Day", "Bottle Of Time", and "I Still Don't Know". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Suzanne Ciani & Jonathan FitoussiGolden Apples Of The Sun ... LP
Obliques (France), 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The legendary Suzanne Ciani is in very classic form here – working on EMS, Buchla, and Moog synthesizers alongside French electronic artist Jonathan Fitoussi! The pair serve up twin-keyboard magic throughout, with a bit of vocalization from Ciani – and the record has all the evocative qualities of her best early material, really a return to the kind of spacey, analog sounds that made Suzanne such an important pioneer back in the day, even if she's only finally getting the right sort of recognition she deserves in the 21st Century! The sound of the work is sublime throughout – very lively, and "live" – not so much processed or programmed, as delivered by two musicians working together with instruments they understand inside and out. Titles include "Sonar", "Pinwheel", "Time Lapse", "Oceanium", "Rainbow Sequence", and "Coral Reef". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ernesto DjedjeErnesto Djedje – Le Roi Du Ziglibithy (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Ernesto Djedje left the planet at a very young age – but thanks to recordings like this, he really left his mark on the music scene in the Ivory Coast – and the larger world of West African music as well! There's a special blend of traditional sounds and contemporary elements going on here – a hybrid that Djedje clearly picked up while working in the French scene earlier in his career, before returning home to make some really amazing records like this! Tracks have a pulsating groove throughout – more a flow directed by the guitar and bass than the heavier sound of Afro Funk – and Djedje's vocals have a raspy charm that grabs you instantly, and which really work well beyond the boundary of language. Titles include "Zigilbithiens", "Golozo", "Bilwana", and "Nini". LP, Vinyl record album
