Kenny Clarke & Francy BolandGolden Eight – Encore! ... LP
Rearward (Italy), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
Way more than an "encore" of the legendary Clarke Boland album Golden Eight – and instead a whole different set of recordings, done way back in 1961, but unissued until now! The album's a killer through and through – every bit the same sort of gem you'd get with the early Clarke Boland albums of the pre-MPS years – extremely tight large ensemble jazz, driven with plenty of soul in the rhythm section, and swinging with some incredible solos that further deepen the sound! Right from the start, the pair were totally on the money – and work here with a lineup that's filled with key European soloists, including Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Derek Humble on alto sax, Karl Drewo on tenor, and Fats Sadi on percussion – not to mention the core crack rhythm trio of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the great Boland originals "A Ball For Othello", "La Campimania", "You Dig It", "Pape Satan Aleppe", and "Free Wheel" – plus a great version of "Invitation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful reissue – very heavy, almost Japanese-style – with a bonus booklet about Gigi Campi!)

✨✧ Clarke Boland Big BandOur Kinda Strauss ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Mid 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Not a set of Strauss recordings, but a fantastic set of lost European recordings by the legendary Clarke/Boland Big Band – put together with the same beautiful packaging and selection as the other sets on Rearward! This volume features the band playing a lot of modal waltz-type tracks – some groovy updatings of Strauss material, others original compositions by Francy Boland, and a few of them covers like "Wives & Lovers" or "My Favorite Things". The band's filled with the usual great batch of European and American players, like Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, Johnny Griffin, Sahim Shihab, and Karl Drewo – and the liveliness of the material gives strong testament to the band's current rediscovery by the jazz cognoscenti. As with the other sets in this series, there's a nice amount of liner notes and photos, and the album's brimming over with great tracks, including "Lotus", "Just Give Me Time", "Peter's Waltz", "Keep On Keeping On", and "Cara Fea". Many tracks unreleased before, and lots of others are quite rare! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light wear.)

Carl Drewo & The Clarke Boland Big BandSwing Waltz Swing ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 29.99
One of the coolest projects ever to come from the Clarke Boland Big Band scene of the 60s – an album done under the leadership of Austrian tenor player Carl Drewo, but one that features all of his bandmates from the better-known big band! The set's wonderfully swinging throughout – done in a jazz waltz style with plenty of modal inflections – hardly the overdone Strauss modes you might expect from Drewo's roots, and more of the groovy 60s European rhythm modes that would show up often in sessions on Saba & MPS! Most tracks dance along beautifully – using instrumentation that includes Benny Bailey and Dusko Goykovich on trumpets, Sal Nistico on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone and flute, and Derek Humble on alto – all supported by the CBBB rhythm team of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – plus the amazing Fats Sadi on percussion, really grooving along nicely at the bottom. Drewo's the lead soloist in most numbers, but he allows plenty of space for his bandmates too – and the session's got a sound we'd rank right up there with some of the best Clarke Boland projects of the 60s. Titles include "Wives & Lovers", "Fruhlingsstimmen", "My Favorite Things", "Claudia", "Schon Ist Die Welt", "Just Give Me Time", and "Keep On Keeping On". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny GriffinLady Heavy Bottom's Waltz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 29.98
One of the rarest Johnny Griffin albums ever – a set recorded as a side project when Griff was working with the Clarke Boland Big Band – in a lineup that features some of the best members from that great ensemble! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Titles include "The Turk's Bolero", "Deep Eight", "A Handful Of Soul", "Foot Patting", and "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album
(Please note that the LP has two Side 1 labels on it but the records fine.)

Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 34.98
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar". Sahib ShihabSahib Shihab & All Those Cats ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Mid 60s-Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
Although reed player Sahib Shihab made a few records in the US in the late 50's, it wasn't until he moved to Europe and started hanging out with the likes of the Clarke-Boland Big Band that his talents really started to flower. This cool new LP brings together 15 small-combo recordings made by Shihab and other members of the CBBB (like Fats Sadi, Benny Bailey, Francy Boland, and Jimmy Woode) during the mid 60's. All the material was recorded by CBBB manager/producer Gigi Campi, and none of the stuff's been issued before as far as we can tell. The groove is nice and swinging, with excellent rolling grooves by Sadi on bongos and vibes. Shihab plays both flute and baritone, and the set swings with the same sort of modal groove as the best Saba/MPS recordings from the time. Cuts include "Campi's Idea", "Dijdar", "Companionship (I + II)", "Peter's Waltz", "Om Mani Padme Hum", and "Herr Fixit". As with the other titles in this series, the music's accompanied by a great package, with loads of excellent photos, good notes, and stellar sound quality. This is the kind of stuff we collect jazz for, and it's great to have it in stock at a nice low price! LP, Vinyl record album

Sahib ShihabSeeds (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 32.98
A legendary album from saxophonist Sahib Shihab – a record that's gone onto become the birth of all things modal and club jazz in the current scene! Shihab always sounded great, no matter what the setting, but there was definitely something magical going on with this session – a one-of-a-kind energy that made his baritone and flute work sound incredibly soulful, searching, and searing – set up with a tight small combo that includes Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – a hip slice of the Clarke Boland Big Band that works beautifully together! Every tune here is wonderful, and you're bound to recognized a few covered or sampled classics over the years – on cuts that include "Seeds", "Peter's Waltz", "Who'll Buy My Dream", "Another Samba", "Jay Jay", "Uma Fita De Tres Cores", and "Mauve". Sahib ShihabSummer Dawn (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Argo/Rearward (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.98
A fantastic early record by Sahib Shihab – a motherlode of modal jazz grooves, cut during the early days of the Clarke-Boland Big Band! The record features a core group of players from that ensemble – including Shihab on alto, baritone, and flute, plus Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Joe Harris on bongos, and Kenny Clarke on drums – all coming together here with a groove that's really groundbreaking – a style that's sweet and soulful, but rhythmically revolutionary too! The tracks are all long and grooving – with the kind of dancing jazz tone that you'd expect from the Saba/MPS label during the mid 60s – a big change from the Argo label that originally issued the record. But that's no surprise, either, as the session was actually recorded in Europe by Gigi Campi – the man behind the CBBB albums on MPS – with a feel that's quite similar to other Shihab classics, like Companionship or Seeds. The whole thing's great – one of Shihab's most wonderful records, and totally worth owning – and titles include "Lillemor", "Please Don't Leave Me", "Waltz For Seth", and "Herr Fixit". Tommasi TrioZamboni 22 ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99
Heavily grooving Italian jazz from 1960 – featuring the piano of Amedo Tommasi, and the twin-horn team of Cicci Santucci and Enzo Scoppa! Santucci plays trumpet and Scoppa plays tenor, and together, the pair were one of the tightest front lines working south of the Alps. We've stocked sets that include some of their funky work from the 70s – but this little gem is a rare early appearance in a straight bop mode, grooving nicely all the way through with the soulfulness of a rare side on Blue Note or Prestige from the same time! Titles include "Mulatto", "Zamboni 22", "Ballad For Micheline", "Coltrane", and "Auto Strada Del Sole". LP, Vinyl record album

Piero UmilianiSmog – Musiche Dalla Colonna Sonora Originale (180 gram vinyl plus bonus CD) ... LP
RCA/Rearward (Italy), Early 60s. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
An early jazzy soundtrack from the great Piero Umiliani – made even better by some key work from Chet Baker on trumpet and Helen Merrill on vocals! The set was done at a time when both artists were spending some time in Italy – shaping the scene with their presence, and really standing out on a handful of rare recordings like this one – quite different than their American material of a few years before! Baker is especially striking – with lead solos that have a great sense of compression, and a depth of soul that really move beyond the Pacific Jazz recordings. And Merrill is wonderful, too – with that special flavor she only ever seemed to open up when she went overseas – and got to move into more unusual settings. But the real star is Umiliani throughout – balancing modern impulses with late night jazz in a way that really points the way towards his later scores in the 60s – but which is already nearly perfect here! Titles include "Smog" (done in instrumental and vocal versions by Baker and Merrill), plus "Dawn", "Tensione", "Tops", "California In The Summer", "Hollywood Tonight", "Bowling", and "Twilight At Los Angeles". Valdambrini-Piana QuintetAfrodite (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vedette/Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
A beautiful 70s session from Italian jazz legends Dino Piana and Oscar Valdambrini – the latter of whom is best known for his cooking 60s sets in the Basso-Valdambrini combo, but who sounds quite different here! Given that Piana plays trombone and Valdambrini plays trumpet, there's a nicely shimmering quality to the set – one that comes from the mixture of their two instruments in the frontline, and some warmly bubbling rhythms in the back. Each player gets plenty of space to solo, but they also share tones and colors together nicely too – and rhythm is from a great trio that features Oscar Rocchi on electric piano, Giorgio Azzolini on bass, and Tullio De Piscopo on drums. Titles include "Arabian Mood", "Drums Atmosphere", "I Due Modi", "Parkeriana", and "Palpitazione". LP, Vinyl record album

Eraldo VolonteFree And Loose ... LP
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $26.99 32.98
A rare bit of modern jazz from Italy – featuring a group led by soprano/tenor sax player Eraldo Volante, and featuring trumpet, trombone, drums, and a piano-less double-bass rhythm team that gives the record a really unique sound! At some level, the feeling of the material is like ESP avant jamming – except for the fact that the freedom of the players is also firmly tethered to an ability to swing, as one of the bassists always seems to be working the rhythm, even when the other soloists are going quite far out. Tracks are all long – and titles include "Six For Arpo", "Free & Loose", "Dialogue", and "For Gaslini". LP, Vinyl record album

Eraldo VolonteJazz (Now) In Italy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.98
Sublime work from saxophonist Eraldo Volonte – a rare mid 60s session recorded in Italy, and totally hip work all the way through! Volonte's got a tone here that's really tremendous – clearly Coltrane-influenced, especially on the tenor selections – but also stretching out with its own feeling too, especially on some of the album's more outside numbers, which feature Eraldo playing some great lines on soprano sax. There's a very open quality to the record – not exactly free jazz, but almost a "new thing" sense of sonic exploration – one that has Volonte's tenor and soprano sax aligned nicely with trombone from Dino Piana, piano from Franco D'Andrea, bass from Giovanni Tommaso, and drums from Franco Tonani. Titles include "Flamingo", "Mr Arpo", "Eclypso", "Tale", "Explorable", and "Ornette". LP, Vinyl record album

Eraldo VolonteMy Point Of View (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A rare treasure from the early 60s Italian jazz scene – one of the earlier albums we've heard from tenor sax player Eraldo Volonte, even though he'd been active in the Italy's jazz landscape for a number of years by this point – and it's really beautiful stuff! A veteran of the Italian scene by the early 60s, Volante was also deeply connected to the innovative global players of the time and the preceding years, with a Coltrane influence in play on this excellent set, as filtered through Volante and his exceptional group. The quartet features Giorgio Azzolini on bass, Renato Sellani on piano and Lionello Bionda on drums. Titles include "Summertime", "On Green Dolphin Street", "You Are A Weaver Of Dreams", "So What" and "Some Other Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Enrico Intra TrioJazz In Studio (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful trio material from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – a player with a great sense of rhythm, and a nice sharp edge in his music! Intra's piano is quite modern at times, although never in ways that are too out or academic – always coming back to the inside for some warmer notes that really make the tunes appealing – a special sort of sparkle that's very much the charm of the Italian 60s modern scene! At times, there's almost a hint of sentimentality in his notes – but it's always played with a bit, turned on its head – almost an overseas reworking of familiar American modes from the 50s, pushed into bright new territory by Intra. Trio members include Puppo DeLuca on drums and Palino Salonia on bass – and titles include "Pittura", "Nardis", "Percussion", "Classic Jazz", "John Lewis", "TraBop", "Fiora Blues", and "Tre Tre Tre".
