A record that's really out of time and place – a set that sounds nothing like most other material issued in 1980, and which also hardly shows any traces of the Louisiana roots of Will & James Ragar! Instead, the set's got this laidback style that's almost folk funk at times, especially the variant from the late 60s and early 70s – maybe a bit like the music of Alzo & Udine. Guitars are mostly acoustic, but warmed up in nicely smooth ways – not through commercial production, just by inflecting the proceedings with a knowledge of jazzier phrasing, which comes through in the vocals, piano, and occasional other instrumentation too. A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! The record is a wonderful example of Gil's work in two different styles – sweet mellow jazzy soul, and harder heavier protest poetry – the latter from his roots as a writer in touch with the streets, and the former part of a brilliant new direction that he was taking on the Flying Dutchman label. Side one features classic jazzy tracks recorded with Brian Jackson – like "Free Will", "The Middle Of Your Days", "Speed Kills", and "Did You Hear What They Said?". Side two moves over to a much sparer sound – and has Gil reciting some of his poetry with very heavy percussion, and a very righteous approach. The wisdom and knowledge of those pieces is a perfect example of the kinds of issues that were haunting black America in the early 70s – especially on the tracks "No Knock", "The King Alfred Plan", and "Sex Education: Ghetto Style". An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. A set that's a great bridge between the fuller sound of Nina Simone's late 60s material and some of smaller jazz combo work – as the album mostly features Nina working with a smaller group, but already at a level that hints at the righteous rising power in her music! The core combo features Rudy Stevenson on guitar and flute, Bobby Hamilton on drums, and Lisle Atkinson on bass – and one track, "For Myself", features arrangements by Horace Ott – and another, "Images", was recorded live – but overall, the album's got a warmly intimate feel that's really great, and which has Nina singing in that perfect sharp-edged mode of the time. A rare and beautiful set from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a record that features tenor and soprano sax from Hideyasu Terekawa, and vibes from Hiroshi Fujii – a wonderful combination, and a pair of players who really open up in the live setting of the record! The tunes are mostly jazz numbers penned by others, but the pair really make them their own – thanks in part to some warm rhythms from drummer Aki Hiro Nakaya and bassist Tetsuo Miura, the latter of whom has this great way of wrapping around the performance and guiding it gently. Killer cop/crime music from the Italian scene of the 70s – a famous genre soundtrack from composer Armando Trovajoli, who's usually known for his work in warmer, sexier styles! The grooves here are right up there with the best that Italy has to offer from the time – full, jazzy backings that often have a bit of keyboards or guitars amidst the larger horns – and rhythms that manage to sound tightly compressed, despite the larger arrangements – in ways that help keep things sounding nice and lean. Trovajoli adds in isolated instruments at the best moments – particularly some woodwind bits that snake along with warmly melodic touches, or keyboards used in spare and subtle ways – and each track seems to offer up a fresh approach to the sound, making for a well-balanced batch of tracks that's far from cliche! A great lost descarga session from the 60s – led by Chihuahua Martinez! Martinez plays both timbales and guiro on the sessions, fronting a group that includes Alberto Valdez on conga, Mike Martinez and Chivirico Davila on coro, Manfredo Lee on guiro, Elpidio Vazquez on piano, Elpidio Vazquez on bass and Pupy Legarreta on flute and violin. The set features some nice vocals by Goody Osvaldo – but there's also a key focus on the instrumentation, with quite a bit of flute in the mix. Nice stuff! One of the first true moments of genius from saxophonist Nathan Davis – a mid 60s European session cut for the tiny SFP label – and a record that's even rarer than his early classics for MPS! The sound here is similar to the MPS sides – a mixture of soul jazz and modal jazz – served up with a bit more freedoms than Davis might have gotten on the US scene, and featuring a lineup that includes Woody Shaw on trumpet, Jean-Louis Chautemps on baritone sax, Rene Urtreger on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. The tight rhythm of Woode and Clarke is a nice counterpoint to the modernism of Davis and Shaw – Davis works a bit on soprano, which sounds especially great! Beautiful live work from Bill Evans – issued here for the first time, and the kind of special concert that really makes a great addition to his classic catalog! Bill Evans live can really be something wonderful – and that's definitely the case here, as he makes this personal magic with the keys of the piano – Evans-esque balancing of silence and sound, with painterly colors that always feel natural and organic, never forced – like Bill's fingertips are just spreading out, and channeling sound through the instrument! An obscure zombie film, but one with a great trio of talents in the music! Most noteworthy here are the legendary Goblin – still very much at the top of their game, and working in that mode that has them taking leaner prog energy down to the sparer sound of the John Carpenter generation – with lots of great keyboards and guitar lines in the process! There's also some wonderful work from Gianni Dell'Orso, who turns in a number of more percussive tracks on the record – these spare, almost tribal numbers that really fit the spirit of the "cannibal" expectations you might have in the title! A wonderful Herbie Hancock session from the 60s – a Blue Note album that's sometimes overlooked, but which really shows Herbie taking off – as he adds a nice dose of lyricism into his usual soul jazz approach from the 60s! The sound's a bit farther-reaching than on some of Hancock's smaller group sessions – and the record features a sextet that includes Jerry Dodgion on flute, Thad Jones on flugelhorn, and Peter Phillips on bass trombone – an instrument that combines wonderfully with Thad's horn, to create all these cool, compressed elements. Herbie plays piano alongside Ron Carter on bass and the great Mickey Roker on drums. The harder-hitting soul jazz riffs and hooks of Herbie's first few records are nicely replaced by more thoughtful lines that get a bit deeper, soulfully – and nearly all tracks on the set are originals by Hancock! Really funky sounds from Maurice Lecoeur – an overlooked French soundtrack genius of the 70s – and one who worked in territory that was way past familiar standards for film! If you know the music of Francois DeRoubaix, you'll find plenty here to love – because like DeRoubaix, Lecoeur effortlessly mixes acoustic and electric, groovy and laidback, funky and jazzy – all with styles that move from full instrumentation to much sparer moments – at a level that matches if not beats some of the coolest sound library material of the time! Ruiz is a hell of a bassist and an equally great leader – and works here with this wonderful group that has trumpet from Ruben Barbieri, alto from Marito Cosentino, and piano from Bubby Lavecchia – all players who have this fresh modern sensibility that reminds us a bit of the Italian scene at the same time – echoing American modes, but already finding their own voices and sense of rhythm – moving past conventional swing, but never outside at all either. Cambodian rock, pop and psychedelia from the 60s & 70s – compiled by the members of Dengue Fever, LA's modern torchbearers of rare prime rock era rarities from Cambodia! It's wonderful stuff – like a lot of the sounds from the pulpy garage rock era Asian underground, most tunes have love female vocals, but the instrumentation varies from raw r&b & kind of moddish influenced sounds, to more psychedelic electric guitar and hazy melodies, bits of funk, and strains that come closer to traditional Cambodian sounds. Really beautiful later work from Michael Hurley – a set recorded in the 21st Century, and with some slightly more sophisticated settings than some of Hurley's earliest records – yet still overflowing with all the charms that make his music so great! Hurley handles guitar, vocals, and a bit of piano – and there's some light backing elements on bass clarinet, dobro, bass, and violin – the last of which sounds very nice, as it's used in these really light, sweet ways – not polished, but also not like a fiddle either. Katie Clayborn sings some backing vocals at times, almost acting like the Emmylou Harris to Hurley's Gram Parsons – on titles that include "Edinburg Lag", "Got Over It", "O My Stars", "The End Of The Road", "Blockade Stillers", and "The Rue Of Ruby Whores". A really lovely album from pianist Michel Sardaby – an artist who's best known for his work on the scene in Paris, but who's had a universal sense of appeal to anyone who digs a hip, soulful player on the keys! This set is maybe one of Sardaby's best known – one of the few to get true worldwide circulation – and it's also one of his best, too – with a slightly different vibe than some of his Parisian records, thanks to work from Tootie Heath on drums and Jay Leonhart on bass. Michel's a master of lyrical fluidity throughout – and the set features some great originals that include "Farewell Tokyo", "Madrugada", "Way Farer", "Maelstrom", and "Night Blossom". A surprisingly strong collection of country cuts from a very unusual scene – material recorded for the tiny Cuca Records label in Wisconsin – a company who was more likely to open their doors to just about anyone, than they were to carefully pick who got to record in their studio! Yet because of that approach, Cuca was able to capture some fantastic sounds that would have otherwise been lost to more commercial concerns – music that here represents an underground of country singers and late rockabilly acts from the scene in southern Wisconsin – all artists with the kind of twang and subject matter you'd be much more likely to discover down in Tennessee! A totally fresh take on French sounds of the late 60s – served up here with a sound that's as revolutionary as the image on the cover! The late 90s all caps CLASSIC by Big Pun – a precise rhyme spitter who, sadly, wouldn't live long enough drop follow up masterpiece in his lifetime, but will always have Capital Punishment as his lasting legacy! Pun was a bit mean, but his flow here is his lean and precise – and he's sharp form throughout. Production wise, Loud Record seems to control the secret formula for a perfect mix of commercial success and straight dope hip hop at the end of the 90s – and the set opens up with guest appearances by Black Thought of The Roots, Raekwon, Fat Joe and more. A long-overdue return for Khari and Jiva – the kind of pairing that first won us over to neo soul many years back – and sounding equally wonderful here! Maybe the biggest album ever from The Cure – a set that marked a high moment in maybe the second chapter of their career – at a time when they'd gone from being a cult underground band to becoming a surprisingly durable group in the long run! That darker energy of Robert Smith's earlier years is still here, but oddly refocused with these glimmers of hope from time to time – almost as if they'd gone from the coldness of standing on the beach to the realization that they were flag-bearers for a generation of misfits. A surprisingly sweet little soundtrack at times – with tunes that are nicer than you might expect from the title or the image on the cover! Some of the material here is definitely in keeping with the horror setting of the movie, but other tracks have a slinky, almost jazzy feel – bits of piano, keyboards, or guitar skipping along with some lightly rhythmic backings that lilt them up and down with a gentle swing. Other tracks are slower, and sparer, but even these are usually not too dark, and certainly not in the atonal modes of other Italian scores from the time. The DeAngelis approach here is almost like Stelvio Cipriani at his best – and titles include "Perugia", "Il Primo Omicidio", "Corpi Smembrati", "La Strage Ha Inizio", and "Marcellazione". A special vinyl release of one of the most striking volumes of the legendary Ethiopiques series – a set that focuses on the mad saxophone work of Getachew Makurya! The recordings on this collection are all from 1972 – and they feature the deep-toned Mekurya blowing in a strange and otherworldly tone, usually over spare backings that include percussion, piano, and/or organ – making for a sound that's almost like some of Pat Patrick's work for Sun Ra, but with a decidedly more ethnic feel! The compositions are all very basic, and very rhythmic – and Makurya's sax work snakes over the top in a really magical way. Really cool material from the sessions for one of our favorite Joni Mitchell albums ever – a set that marked a new embrace of jazz in her music, and created some very groovy tunes! The music here is different than the final cuts that appeared on Court & Spark – more stripped-down and personal, in a way that links this new material back to the sparer sound of Joni at the end of the 60s. Chef Raekwon cooks up one of finest hip hop albums in history – a standout moment in the Wu Tang canon and the 90s in general! A very compelling set from Japanese bassist Isao Suzuki – one that draws on the electric traditions being forged at the time by artists like Miles and Joe Henderson – but which is also graced by the warm lyricism that was running through other Japanese jazz sessions of the 70s! Suzuki plays a surprising range of instruments – electric piano, cello, and bass – and his group displays an amazing ability to move into freely flowing numbers, then shift abruptly into sparer, subtler territory. The vibe of the record is quite unique – and group members include Kenji Mori on alto and flute, Kazumi Watanabe on guitar, Samu Kawakami on bass, and Shinji Mori on drums – and one title features vocals from Mari Nakamoto. Killer cop/crime music from the Italian scene of the 70s – a famous genre soundtrack from composer Armando Trovajoli, who's usually known for his work in warmer, sexier styles! The grooves here are right up there with the best that Italy has to offer from the time – full, jazzy backings that often have a bit of keyboards or guitars amidst the larger horns – and rhythms that manage to sound tightly compressed, despite the larger arrangements – in ways that help keep things sounding nice and lean. Trovajoli adds in isolated instruments at the best moments – particularly some woodwind bits that snake along with warmly melodic touches, or keyboards used in spare and subtle ways – and each track seems to offer up a fresh approach to the sound, making for a well-balanced batch of tracks that's far from cliche! The title's almost redundant – as the words "Westbound" and "Funk" mean virtually the same thing! From the late 60s through the mid 70s, Westbound was one of the key record labels in the sound of raw heavy funk – working with hit groups like Funkadelic and the Ohio Players to craft a sound that laid the blueprint for countless other groups of the time, and also featuring a wealth of obscurer artists with an even harder-hitting sound! The group's name and image on the front are certainly well-placed – because the album's got some Eastern-styled instrumentation mixed in alongside more psychedelic guitars! The record's the only full set by the group – recorded by a group of Japanese exiles for Capitol in 1972, and done in a blend of rootsy, guitar-based rock that's sometimes augmented with a bit of flute and koto! Lyrics are all in English, but sometimes have a slightly stiff feeling – almost halting, even when trilling – in a way that creates a slight sense of unease throughout. A fantastic little record – one that's not only important as a key introduction of Middle Eastern sounds to the US market, but one that also fits perfectly with other Vanguard label experimental folk sets from artists like Peter Walker and Sandy Bull! Unlike those musicians, who absorbed global elements, Hamza El Din is the real deal – and both sings and plays the oud here with a wonderfully rich quality – spare and acoustic, but ringing out with the complexity of an essential session on Takoma Records, and with a transcendent sound that grabs the listener instantly.
