✨✧ Hotel New TokyoGaudi No Yuutsu (CD & DVD) ... CD
Rose (Japan), 2006. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A compelling new group from Japan – one who work in a mix of jazzy styles and gentler modes that reminds us a bit of the earliest grooves from Jazztronik! Hotel New Tokyo share a similar love of space and sensitive sounds with Jazztronik mainman Ryo Nozaki, but also know how to kick up a groove when they want – and the album balances sparer, more soundscapey tracks with fuller tunes that are awash in rhythm and have a playful mix of sound samples, voice snippets, and instrumentation. Titles include "Dun Dun", "Trip In Jazz", "PM 7:42", and others with Japanese titles! CD

✨✧ Michael HurleySweetkorn (with bonus track) ... LP
Mississippi, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really beautiful later work from Michael Hurley – a set recorded in the 21st Century, and with some slightly more sophisticated settings than some of Hurley's earliest records – yet still overflowing with all the charms that make his music so great! Hurley handles guitar, vocals, and a bit of piano – and there's some light backing elements on bass clarinet, dobro, bass, and violin – the last of which sounds very nice, as it's used in these really light, sweet ways – not polished, but also not like a fiddle either. Katie Clayborn sings some backing vocals at times, almost acting like the Emmylou Harris to Hurley's Gram Parsons – on titles that include "Edinburg Lag", "Got Over It", "O My Stars", "The End Of The Road", "Blockade Stillers", and "The Rue Of Ruby Whores". LP has a different track order than the original CD – and includes a bonus recent live recording of "Murderer's Home Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt JacksonOlinga ... LP
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $34.99
Milt Jackson's third album for CTI – part of a wonderful run that really helped him redefine his sound in the 70s! The album's got the electric approach you'd expect from the label – a great change from the sound of Jackson in the Modern Jazz Quartet, and a surprisingly great setting for his wonderful work on vibes! Milt's laidback style is perfect for the CTI mode – open, flowing, and filled with great tones – matched up here with sax work by Jimmy Heath, bass by Ron Carter, piano from Cedar Walton, and drums by Mickey Roker – a perfect setting to let loose in a way he rarely did on his earlier albums. The whole set's great – and titles include "Lost April", "Rerev", "The Metal Melter", "The Steel Bender", and "I'm Not So Sure". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Includes the CTI inner sleeve. Cover has minimal wear and a tiny spot of gloss separation at the top left edge.)

One of the rarer JBs singles on People, and one that has 2 great tracks that weren't on any of the LPs by them. "Back Stabbers" is their funky cover of the O'Jays' hit, and "JB Shout" is a good instrumental, with a stunning solo by Fred Wesley. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimGabriela – Original Soundtrack ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty nice little record from Jobim – one that builds on the larger orchestrations he was crafting during the 70s, working into a sound that's rich, warm, and a strong accompaniment for this film that starred Marcello Mastroianni. Oscar Castro Neves conducts the orchestra, and Jobim and Gal Costa sing on a few songs – dueting in an especially lovely way on the tracks "Tying The Knot", "Love Theme From Gabriela", and "Love Theme – Long Version". Other titles include "Arrival Of The Wanderers", "Thinking Of Life", "Playing Leapfrog", and "Walking Through The Forest". CD

✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimTerra Brasilis ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Pretty great sounds from the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that's pretty darn compelling! The album features larger orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, and in a way, it's similar to the Jobim album on Decca from 1973 (aka Maita Pere) – in that it's got all the simple elements of Jobim's earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we'd rank right up there with the modernist work of Gil Evans or Duke Ellington. A few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you'll hear English versions of some older bossa tunes. Titles include "Dreamer", "Canta Mais", "Olha Maria", "Wave", "Two Kites", "This Happy Madness", "Song Of The Sabia", "Estrada Do Sol", "Voce Vai Ver", "Off Key", and "Triste". ✨✧ Tom Jobim, Vinicius De Moraes, & OthersGarota De Ipanema (Precio Economico) ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stunning lost bossa nova soundtrack! The score was penned for the 1967 film Garota De Ipanema (Girl From Ipanema), and although you've heard some of the tracks before in other versions, the overall album is very nice – and is a wonderful tribute to the early days of bossa nova! Jobim and Vinicius perform, as well as Baden Powell, Tamba Trio, Nara Leao, Elis Regina, Ronnie Von, Chico Buarque, and Quarteto Em Cy – and titles include "Por Voce", "Chorino", "Aria Para Se Morrer De Amor", "Rancho Das Namoradas", and "Tema Da Desilusao". We think some of the material might have popped up on other albums from time to time, but there's still enough stuff here that we hadn't heard elsewhere – and that we like a lot! ✨✧ Rudolph JohnsonSecond Coming ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant album from the overlooked reedman Rudolph Johnson – his second session for the Black Jazz label, and even better than the first! There's a soaring, searching quality to the record that Johnson never had before – a way of handling his tenor with a tone that Coltrane would have envied, and which sparkles with some of Rudolph's most soulful 70s contemporaries – like Sonny Fortune or Andrew White! The tunes are almost all originals, and have this depth of vision that really holds us rapt throughout – a way of digging in and continuing to find new meaning throughout the course of Johnson's solos – with superb rhythm backing from the trio of Kirk Lightsey on piano, Kent Brinkley on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Lightsey is wonderful too – maybe his best performance on record – and titles include the sublime numbers "The Highest Pleasure", "The Traveler", "Time and Space", and "The Water Bearer". CD

✨✧ Clifford JordanAdventurer ... LP
Muse, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from Clifford Jordan – proof that the 70s were possibly the greatest decade for his music! Although most of Jordan's contemporaries from the big tenor days of the 50s really didn't grow much during the 70s, Clifford always continued to develop his style – adding in modes and tones that he'd never played before, working in an ever rich tapestry of jazz that makes just about any of his albums from the time a delight. Even this session – a simple quartet date recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee, and Grady Tate – offers lots of wonderful moments, and is kind of a post-righteous 70s soul jazz album, filled with lots of warm tones and straight soulful playing that are almost a back to earth moment after his Strata East years – but still equally expressive. Titles include "He's A Hero", "No More", "Quasimodo", and "Adventurer". LP, Vinyl record album

Omagatoki (Japan), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent mid 90s album from Joyce – and one of the first really great records she made in years! The album's got a nice no-nonsense sound that returns Joyce to the sparer settings of her earlier work – and which paves the way for more recent strong efforts, like Hard Bossa or Tudo Bonito. The backing's mostly by a jazz quintet of piano, tenor sax, bass, and drums – and Joyce plays guitar and sings in both English and Portugese. Tracks include "Upa Neguinho", "Cantaloupe Island", "No Tabuleiro da Baiana", "Tenderly", "Speak Low", "Here There & Everywhere", and "Delirios De Orfeu". CD

✨✧ Kath1 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Lion, 1974. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of those amazing obscure records that seems to come out of nowhere – sounding nothing like most of the mainstream work of the time, with a power that might have shaped the world of music for years to come – if the album hadn't been issued in a tiny pressing of only 60 copies! There's a darkness here that's mindblowing – not just in the vocals, and the weird echoey way they've been recorded – but also in the overall instrumentation and pacing of the record – kind of a melancholy, slow progression that almost prefaces 80s styles on 4AD, but with a much rougher feel overall! Any psyche impulses are broken down into much sparer, earthier sounds – and there seems to be a bit of electronics in the mix – or is it just noise from the guitar? Yet lyrical themes are up-close and personal too – almost chance-taking in their earnestness, without the somberness of the instrumentation. All of this makes for a sublime mix – and a record that's as captivating as it is rare. Titles include "Lonely Again", "I Want To Love You", "Goodbye Sunshine", "Candleman", and "Seagulls" – and 2CD set features a whopping 23 bonus tracks – a huge amount of unreleased material, and a few other singles by the group. ✨✧ Stan KentonArtistry In Bossa Nova (Capitol) ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Proof that the Kenton sound could work in just about any format – as Stan transforms a host of older tunes from his book into a bossa nova groove! The approach is simple, but great – as the rich Kenton tones and colors are infused with some added rhythms laid down by Milt Holland, Larry Bunker, and Frank Guerrero on Latin percussion. Horn players Steve Marcus, Jack Nimitz, Dalton Smith, Conte Candoli, and Gabe Baltazar carve out some great lines in the set – cascading waves of sound that are a wonderful counterpoint to the driving rhythms of the set – almost in a way that recalls the Kenton Latin sides of the 50s, but a bit more subtle. Titles include "Kentonova", "Opus In Chartreuse", "Artistry In Rhythm", "Concerto To End All Concertos", "Loco Nova", "Artistry In Bossa Nova", "Eager Beaver", and "Painted Rhythm". Contemporary, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Much more interesting than some of Barney's earlier records – possibly because he's working with a hip, flexible combo – one that includes Marv Jenkins on piano and flute, Jerry Good on bass, and Stan Popper on drums. The tracks are a mix of groovers and mellow numbers – with Jenkins breaking out the flute on the sparer ones – and titles include "The Good Lil Man", "Spanish Scenery", "Pedal Point", and "New Rhumba". ✨✧ Kiko Kids JazzTanganyika Na Uhuru ... LP
Mzuri/Mississippi, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from Kiko Kids Jazz – neither a jazz group, nor a batch of child musicians – but instead an East African collective who have a sound that mixes familiar guitar lines and percussion with a slight bit of mandolin too – all in a mode that's this beautiful blend of the strings of the instruments, the lilting currents of percussion, and the haunting lead vocals of Salim Zahoro – the enigmatic singer who really gives the group a unique flavor! The sound here is maybe in similar territory to highlife – but the tunes are more compact overall, and have a focus that's really carried by Salim's vocals – often with a quality that's relatively lean, especially when you consider that most of these recordings feature the group with almost 20 members in play. The set's the first we've ever seen to bring together these rare singles recorded in Mombasa in the early 60s – and titles include "Sili Sishibi", "Nyerere Karume", "Bahati", "Sauti Yako Tamu", "Nda Kuharashe", "Mineona Ua", "Tanu Imeleta Uhuru", "Tula Ubona", "Lumumba", and "Mpenzi Wanionea". Supposedly one of the first records of Dr King's speeches to be recorded – put together by Dootsie Williams in LA, and the forebearer of what would become a very popular genre in the 60s! The album was issued after King's death, but was recorded years before – and themes include the poverty and political situation in India and The American Dream. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy KnepperIdol Of The Flies (aka Swinging Introduction To Jimmy Knepper) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great work from one of the most compelling trombonists of the 50s! Jimmy Knepper is probably best known for his excellent work on some of Charles Mingus' best records – but this set from 1957 shows that Knepper was also an extremely capable (if under-recorded) leader in his own right! The album is one of the rarest Bethlehem sides – and it features Knepper leading a crack group that includes Bill Evans, Gene Quill and drummer Dannie Richmond, making a rare non-Mingus appearance here! The tracks are shortish, and a number of them are standards, but the group swings nicely, and Knepper's tone is nice and edgey on most tracks. Titles include "Avid Admirer", "Close As Pages In A Book", "Ogling Ogre", "Irresistable You", "How High The Moon", "Love Letters" and "Idol Of The Flies". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kool & The GangLive At PJ's (with bonus track) ... CD
De-Lite/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Kool & The Gang albums ever – a monster live session that almost blows away their studio classics! The groove here is far more freewheeling and complex than some of their singles from the 70s – longer, tripped-out tunes with a definite undercurrent of jazz amidst the funk – loads of wicked horn bits from Ronnie Bell and Dennis Thomas that complicate things up nicely, while still staying soulfully in the groove. There's no vocals at all on the record – which further enforces the Kool Jazz sound of the set – and the album's even harder-hitting than their previous Sex Machine live album, so much so, the PJ's club had to close its doors shortly after the Gang's performance! Titles include the all-time killer sample cut "Duji" – plus "NT", "Ronnie's Groove", "Ricksonata", "Lucky For Me", "Sombrero Sam", and a medley of "Ike's Groove/You've Lost That Lovin Feeling". CD also features a rare bonus cut – "The Penguin" – recorded at the time, but not issued on the original album! Plus, this reissue is even better than the previous one – packaged with a full-color booklet of notes and rare images. CD

✨✧ Betty LavetteNearer To You ... CD
Snapper (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic female soul – and an incredible collection of work from the young Betty Lavette – easily one of our favorite female soul singers of the time! The set brings together late 60s tracks recorded for the Calla and Silver Fox label – and as great as her later work might be, this is the stuff that will really blow you away – the real deal, right-on-the-money sort of tracks that made Betty a legend right from the get-go! Backings are often nicely funky, and production has that great gritty way of unlocking the full depth of Lavette's vocals without going for any easy soul cliches – a kind of purity that's really kept these tracks at the top of our stack over the years. The set features a great book-style cover, with notes on the music – and the CD also features a few duets with Hank Ballard, too! Titles include "He Made a Woman Out of Me", "Do Your Duty", "We Got to Slip Around", "Love's Made a Fool of Me", "Let's Go Let's Go Let's Go", "Hello Sunshine", "My Train's Coming In", "Nearer To You", and "I'm In Love". Bettye LavetteI've Got My Own Hell To Raise ... CD
Anti, 2005. Used ... $1.99
A surprisingly wonderful set from deep soul diva Bettye Lavette – a record that's actually as good as most of her older work, and that's something we didn't expect! We'll be honest in saying that we're always pretty darn suspicious of comeback albums by older soul singers – and usually, we find them lacking in spirit compared to the older work, thanks to bad production and song selection choices. Here, though, Lavette actually seems to sound even stronger than before – stepping out on some numbers with especially raw backings that have guitar ripping alongside her heartfelt vocals – in a groove that almost recalls 70s work by Betty Davis. Other tunes are sparer, or mellower – but Bettye's vocals burn strongly throughout – and the album's easily set a new standard for this sort of session! Titles include "Down To Zero", "The High Road", "On The Surface", "Little Sparrow", "Just Say So", "How Am I Different", and "Only Time Will Tell Me". CD

Really funky sounds from Maurice Lecoeur – an overlooked French soundtrack genius of the 70s – and one who worked in territory that was way past familiar standards for film! If you know the music of Francois DeRoubaix, you'll find plenty here to love – because like DeRoubaix, Lecoeur effortlessly mixes acoustic and electric, groovy and laidback, funky and jazzy – all with styles that move from full instrumentation to much sparer moments – at a level that matches if not beats some of the coolest sound library material of the time! Each track seems to have a very different vibe, which really keeps things interesting – and plenty funky too – and the package features 22 rare nuggets that include "Le Ballet Inacheve", "Sans Premeditation", "Baoou", "Safari Au Kivu Theme 1", "Faux Suspense", "Le Soleil Qui Rit Rouge", "Les Petites Filles Modeles", "Donne Moi La Terre", "Tartares", and "Chili". Arthur Lee left his group Love behind for this early 70s debut as a solo act – but the record also seems to have Lee returning to some of the heavier blues-inspired sounds of that group's early years too! Lee is a monster here in the spotlight – fantastic guitar lines effortlessly flying from his fingers, vocal power that's more varied and dynamic than some of his later Love performances, and a sense of occasional wit that's echoed by the cover. Arthur also wrote, produced, and arranged the whole thing – which was recorded in Hollywood with help from some of his friends – on titles that include "Hamburger Breath Stinkfinger", "He Knows A Lot of Good Women", "You Can Save Up To 50% But You're Still A Long Ways From Home", "He Said She Said", "Love Jumped Through My Window", "Everybody's Gotta Live", and "You Want Change For Your Rerun". Commentary, 1957. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Fantastic stuff – and a key example of the penetration of psychoanalysis in the US during the postwar years! The tunes here are all vocal parodies of familiar themes from Freud – sung by Katie Lee in a way that's a bit jazz, but possibly a bit folksy too – very playful at times, with the dry wit that you'd get in some of Tom Lehrer's famous records of the same period. Instrumentation is arranged by Bob Thompson, who really emphasizes the whimsy in the tunes – and titles include "The Will To Fail", "Repressed Hostility Blues", "Gunslinger", "Properly Loved", "Real Sick Sounds", "Shrinker Man", and "Schizophrenic Moon". ✨✧ Charles LloydDream Weaver ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from reedman Charles Lloyd – a set that really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Even though leading the group on tenor and flute, Lloyd's got a real sense of rhythm to his playing – echoes of the Hamilton group – but set loose with a stellar quartet of younger players – including Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all perfect choices for inventive music like this! The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles LloydForest Flower/Soundtrack ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1966/1968. Used ... $6.99 11.99
A famous album – but for good reason! The set's something of a landmark in spiritual jazz from the 60s – and it features a classic live performance from Charles Lloyd, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival – almost as a distillation and popularization of ideas that were brewing in the music of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and others! The group here features a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all flowing magnificently with Lloyd's work on tenor and flute – in an open-ended groove that draws on modal rhythms for inspiration, and which features solos that stretch out, but never go "outside"! The classic performances of "Forest Flower" takes up all of side one – with a dreamy drifting quality that has Jarrett at his best – and side two features a version of his "Sorcery", plus McBee's "Song Of Her", and a version of "East Of The Sun". Soundtrack features a similar line-up with Lloyd on tenor and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – adding Ron McClure in place of Cecil McBee on bass. Titles include "Forest Flower 69", "Pre-Dawn", "Sombrero Sam", and "Voice In The Night". CD

Two great sets from reedman Charles Lloyd! Dream Weaver really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". Love-In features a classic batch of modal grooves from Charles Lloyd – recorded during the height of his mind-expanding years, with his famous quartet that included Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tracks are long and magical, done with that spiritual spiraling sound that Lloyd was wowing the hippies with at the time – and considering that this set was recorded live at the Fillmore, there were an awful lot of hippies present to be wowed! But the set's also got a charm that lives long past its time – thanks to an expansive vision from Lloyd on flute and tenor, and from Jarrett on piano too. Titles include "Sunday Morning", "Love-in", "Tribal Dance", and "Temple Bells". CD

✨✧ Machito & His Afro Cuban OrchestraAfro Cuban In New York (aka Vacation At The Concord) ... LP
Coral, 1958. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A great document of the crossover between the New York Latin scene and the Catskills – the upstate resort community that was as important to the Latin groups as the uptown clubs! Like many groups of the period, Machito's found a heck of a lot of work in the Catskills during the 50s – most notably at the Concord Resort, paid tribute to by this set – which includes photos of famous Concord staffers that include swimming instructor Buster Crabbe and golf pro Jimmy Demarest! But apart from that gimmicky approach, the album's actually a strong one for Machito – showing the kind of grooves that helped his 50s group cross over big – a mix of mambo and early cha cha tracks that include "Patricia", "Guaglione", "Torero", "Cha Cha Cha Loco", "Cotillon Mambo", and "Mambo La Concord". ✨✧ Henry ManciniBest Of Mancini Vols 1 & 2/Concert Sound/Mancini Salutes Sousa (plus bonus track) (SACD quadrophonic multi-channel) ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The super-sound of Henry Mancini, served up here in a special SACD set! The first half of the package features cuts from two different RCA albums that collect together some of the best of Mancini's music from the 60s – key soundtrack numbers and other instrumentals – in a lineup of tracks that includes "Charade", "Hatari", "Peter Gunn", "Lujon", "Breakfast At Tiffany's", "The Brothers Go To Mothers", "Pink Panther", "Dear Heart", "Cheers", and "Baby Elephant Walk". Concert Sound has Mancini working with larger orchestrations than usual, in an expansion of his usual 60s groove! The tracks here are all somewhat long – suite-type numbers made up from smaller songs wrapped together in new Mancini arrangements that have a really cool feel in this setting! The orchestra is somewhat large, with strings and woodwinds – but in true Mancini fashion, there's also key solos from players who include Pete Candoli and Conrad Gozzo on trumpet, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto sax, and Jimmy Rowles on piano. Titles include "Peter Gunn Meets Mr Lucky", "The Music Of David Rose", "Academy Award Selections", and "A Tribute To Victor Young". Mancini Salutes Sousa is a very weird one – as Henry Mancini pays tribute to the work of John Philip Sousa! As you'd expect from Sousa's marches, most of the work has a parade band military sound – and Mancini, despite his grooviness, hardly breaks format to change the style of the work. The approach has touches of some of Mancini's more military soundtrack work – and the recording quality definitely has a classic Hollywood approach – but overall, it's still Sousa. Titles include "The Gladiator", "Washington Post", "National Fencibles", "The Thunderer", and "Drum Corps". CD set also features the rare bonus track "Man Of The World" – originally only on a 7" single! CD

✨✧ David MaranissOnce In A Great City – A Detroit Story (hardcover) ... Book
Simon & Schuster, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not just a book on Motown – despite the image of The Supremes on the cover – but a story of Detroit itself – told as a series of intersecting paths that include the famous soul music label, as well as all the manufacturers, cultures, communities, and political forces that were shaping the city in the early 60s. The decline of Detroit has been a story for decades now – but David Maraniss looks at the city in the years before the fall – focusing on 1963, where he shows that tensions were already strong in some sectors, and the ground upon which so much was being built could easily shift and allow the whole thing to topple. The book is one of the most fascinating city portraits we've ever read – with lessons that are still completely essential to the 21st Century urban environment – and the whole thing is 441 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Maybe the best album ever from the mighty Ricardo Marrero – a 70s Latin talent who didn't record much, but always gave the world something wonderful when he did! The set's got this really great vibe – some cuts that update 60s Latin soul modes with even more righteous 70s elements – other numbers that are more jazz-based, almost in the territory of Cal Tjader's funky Latin tracks! A number of the cuts have vocals by a female singer – who really helps give the whole thing a feel that's very different than the usual Latin record of the time – almost a dose of Cali soul, even though Ricardo was more of a east coast talent at the time! Titles include the classic funk cut "Babalonia" – plus "Tiny", "Algo", "And We'll Make Love", "Vengo", "Get Yourself Together", "My Friend", and "A Taste Of Latin". CD

A contemporary artist, but working here on a very ancient instrument – the Kenyan obokano, which is a large eight-stringed instrument that brings out these bassy tones that are completely unique – blended here with a second version of the instrument, plus fuzzy guitar, bass, and other instruments as well! The approach takes the obokano into almost-psychedelic territory – with a quality that still resonates with all the core qualities that Kenyan musicians have used for years, but which takes on this very trippy quality next to the more Western-styled instrumentation. Grandmaster Masese also sings in this very hypnotic way next to his instrument – on titles that include "Omoraba", "Ekeore", "Chombe Ciachire", "Enyamunchera", "Inyora Nka", and "Nyambeki Na Nyarere". Columbia/BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four fantastic records from a time when Johnny Mathis was really evolving his sound! On Me & Mrs Jones, Johnny Mathis takes on the sophisticated soul modes of the 70s, and also adds in a few other styles too – on an album that shows just how much the singer had changed in nearly 20 years of recording – sometimes shaped by all those other artists he'd inspired along the way! The title version of the Billy Paul classic "Me & Mrs Jones" is superb – maybe worth the price of the record alone, and perfect for the mature Mathis approach – and Johnny shines equally well on the album's blend of other 70s tunes, arranged by D'Arneill Pershing with a bit of help from Larry Muhoberac. Titles include "Summer Breeze", "Sweet Surrender", "Corner Of The Sky", "Remember", "You're A Lady", "If I Could Reach You", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Soul & Inspiration/Just Once In My Life", and "Me & Mrs Jones". Johnny takes on a mix of sweet & tender and more melancholy tunes on Killing Me Softly, showing a surer hand at making a batch of then contemporary hits his own much more successfully than other veteran pop vocalists of his generation. Jerry Fuller produced, and the titles Includes "Aubrey", "And I Love You So", "Break Up To Make Up", "Sing", "Good Morning Heartache", "Neither One Of Us Wants To Say Goodbye", "Show And Tell" and "Ariane". On I'm Coming Home, Johnny Mathis gets a great new sound – thanks to Philly production and arrangements from the great Thom Bell! Thom had quite a hand in the songs, too – as almost all numbers were written by the team of Bell and Linda Creed – really sensitive songwriters who've got an adult, mature approach to the music – one that still respects Mathis' roots in other vocal territory, but which also gives him a bit more soulful depth, too. The setting is wonderful, and the record's a real standout in Johnny's 70s career – one that helped reignite interest in the singer at a time when so many folks had left him behind. Titles include "I'm Coming Home", "Foolish", "I'm Stone In Love With You", "A Baby's Born", "Life Is A Song Worth Singing", "I Just Wanted To Be Me", and a classic version of "Stop Look & Listen To Your Heart". Feelings is a prime 70s Columbia era Mathis gem, with production by Jack Gold and this time out, arrangements by Gene Page that mix tender hearted intimacy and lightly sweeping touches as sweetly as can be. Titles include "One Day In Your Life", "Stardust", "Midnight Blue", "Feelings", "That's All She Wrote", "Solitaire" and more. CD features the bonus track "Crazy Little Love Makin Ways". CD

Two slinky 70s classics from French maestro Paul Mauriat – still doing great at this point in his career! Emmanuelle is a record that has Mauriat taking on the lead theme of the 70s erotic film at the start – then moving into a whole host of 70s covers, too – all done with Mauriat's trademark sense of timing alongside swirling strings – a bit of bass at the bottom, some well-paced arrangements on the top – occasionally nodding to a bit of the disco of the generation, but never too much overall. Titles include "Emmanuelle", "Angie Baby", "Mandy", "Oumparere", "Have You Never Been Mellow", and "Rock The Boat". Fantastic 4 Channel is a record that Paul Mauriat created for the Quad generation – and as such, it's got a very nice mix of tracks from previous recordings, but recast for the four-speaker mode – which means even more dynamic sound than before! Warner, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Mel Torme gives Barbara McNair some mighty big props in the notes to this one – and hearing the set, we certainly have to agree! The record may well be McNair's most dramatic of the 60s – still a mix of vocal and jazz styles with a touch of soul – but also done with a bit more dynamism in the arrangements, and sung in a bold, powerful voice that's quite different from some of her more easy-going Motown recordings of later years. A good portion of the work here is from 60s shows, but Barbara sings the tunes with a personal style that gets past their roots – and backings are by Ralph Carmichael, in a way that's sweet one minute, swinging the next! A special vinyl release of one of the most striking volumes of the legendary Ethiopiques series – a set that focuses on the mad saxophone work of Getachew Makurya! The recordings on this collection are all from 1972 – and they feature the deep-toned Mekurya blowing in a strange and otherworldly tone, usually over spare backings that include percussion, piano, and/or organ – making for a sound that's almost like some of Pat Patrick's work for Sun Ra, but with a decidedly more ethnic feel! The compositions are all very basic, and very rhythmic – and Makurya's sax work snakes over the top in a really magical way. A bit more pop soul than some of Sergio Mendes' work from a few years back – but still the kind of set that shows that he's got a better ear for music than most of his contemporaries! As with Sergio's previous album, this one's got a fair bit of contributions from Robbie Buchanan – who arranges, produces, and plays keyboards on a good deal of tracks – often bringing a vibe to Mendes' music that's a bit more electric than before. Yet at other points, things are still warmly soulful – in ways that hearken back nicely to Sergio's more soul-based sets of the 70s. Vocals are by Joe Pizzulo, Gracinha Leporace, and Siedah Garrett – and titles include "Olympia", "Real Life", "Morrer De Amor", "Dance Attack", "Alibis", "Let's Give A Little More This Time", and "Say It With Your Body". A series of duet and trio pieces recorded live by pianist Misha Mengelberg – in the company of saxophonist Steve Potts, trumpeter Thomas Herberer, tuba player Michel Godard, and percussionist Achim Kremer – all in ways that are often spare, and graced with the strong feeling of each player staking out their individual space! The overall quality of the record is perhaps a bit more academic than some of Mengelberg's other recordings, but the overall result is still quite nice – and Misha's own piano often breaks through some of the too-contemplative moments with a stronger sense of spirit. A beautiful split album between British soprano sax genius Lol Coxhill and prog jazz keyboardist Stephen Miller. Coxhill's side is the standout one – as it features tunes that run from quirky solo numbers ("Tubercular Bells"), to hippy dippy ensemble ones ("Soprano Derivato", which features Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers), to experimental tunes with some great effects (like the "recorder echoes" on "Oh Do I Like To Be Beside The Seaside", or the cathedral organ on "In Memoriam".) Miller's side is sparer – and mostly features solo electric piano, played in a way that reminds us of the jazzier moments in Matching Mole or Soft Machine. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small cutout hole, but this is a great copy!)

✨✧ Blue MitchellCup Bearers ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that Blue's in the company of some of his Horace Silver bandmates – including drummer Roy Brooks, tenorist Junior Cook, and bassist Gene Taylor – but even more than that, the presence of a young Cedar Walton on piano really makes the set sparkle, as does the choice of some extremely strong material – such as "The Cup Bearers" and "Capers", both written by that young and glowing jazz compositional lumiary, Tom McIntosh, and the tunes "Turquoise, written by Walton, and "Dingbat Blues", written by Charles Davis. Forgive the long sentence, but the quality of this one's best expressed in a single breath! CD

✨✧ Joni MitchellCourt & Spark Demos (2023 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Warner, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really cool material from the sessions for one of our favorite Joni Mitchell albums ever – a set that marked a new embrace of jazz in her music, and created some very groovy tunes! The music here is different than the final cuts that appeared on Court & Spark – more stripped-down and personal, in a way that links this new material back to the sparer sound of Joni at the end of the 60s. The format's a great one, and makes us love the songs even more – and the package features a very cool "Piano Suite", with snippets of other songs – plus demo takes on "People's Parties", "Help Me", "Trouble Child", "Raised On Robbery", and "Just Like This Train". ✨✧ Roscoe Mitchell QuartetFlow Of Things ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's an apt one, as Roscoe Mitchell's working here in a rich flowing style – stepping off of a series of performances dedicated to the music of John Coltrane, but taking Coltrane's inspiration into an area of sound and space that's distinctly Mitchell-like! The title composition – "The Flow Of Things" – is presented in three variations, each slightly different, but all elliptically shaped, with an interweaving play of improvisation that's wonderful. The set's completed by the sparer "Cards For Quartet" – and the recording features Mitchell on alto and soprano sax, in a quartet with Jodie Christian on piano, Malachi Favors on bass, and Steve McCall on drums. ✨✧ MobMob (Colossus) ... LP
Colossus, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Some of the best blue-eyed soul of the 70s – material by a really wonderful group with raspy soul leads and full, soaring harmonies! The Mob had a groove that was partly influenced by crossover soul of the late 60s, but which also had a touch of the jazz/rock modes of their generation – tight horns that swing along with the rhythms wonderfully – all in a way that almost links the group to some of the southern party circuit combos, like The Swinging Medallions or Tempests. Lead vocalist Al Herrero has a totally great way of putting over a tune – a style that never tries too hard, and which always keeps things right on the edge without going over the top. This approach is heard especially well on the classic "I Dig Everything About You", but the whole album's great too – overflowing with fresh original tracks that include "Maybe I'll Find A Way", "Lost", "Give It To Me", "Love's Got A Hold On Me", and "For A Little While". ✨✧ Montgomery ExpressMontgomery Express Does Party Fever & Other Songs Of The Montgomery Movement ... CD
Ikef/Folkways, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive lost funk classic – one of those rarer than rare albums that's well worth the fuss! The Montgomery Express were a Florida combo who played on the state's small club circuit – working equally well on their own, or backing up a number of better known singers. The group's got a diversity that's really great – and they're equally well-suited to longer, trippier funk instrumentals, and shorter more soul-based tunes. The vocal numbers are especially haunting, as they've got a moody and sad feel that's more like New Jersey or Detroit group soul of the time than the usual Miami soul – and the funkier tunes have a nice psychedelic approach that uses plenty of sweetly-tuned guitar! 8 tracks in all – "Party Fever", "Precious Wing", "Montgomery Movement", "Gotta Make A Comeback", "Who", "Steal Away", "I'm Standing By", and "Left Me With A Memory". Mighty Malaco recordings from Dorothy Moore – one of the leading torch-bearers of the southern soul sound at the end of the 70s – and an artist who definitely knows how to keep things real! Backings are full, but never overdone – and although there's a slightly modern soul feel to some of the arrangements, they're never too slick or urban – more in that new level of sophistication that was hitting some of the southern singers of the time. Titles include "Special Occasion", "Being Alone", "He Knows Just Where To Touch Me", "We Need More Loving Time", and "The Going Ups & The Coming Downs". LP, Vinyl record album

Marilyn MooreMoody Marilyn Moore ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
A rare and exceptional vocal jazz LP – cut by the obscure Marilyn Moore, then the wife of Al Cohn – who's pictured in profile on the cover of the record! Marilyn's got a style that's somewhat raspy – clearly inspired by Billie Holiday at times, and not what you'd expect in comparison to some of the cooler, clearer female singers who worked on Bethlehem in the 50s. The backing is in a small group mode – with Cohn on tenor and bass clarinet, plus Don Abney on piano, Joe Wilder on trumpet, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – all in a nicely relaxed mode to fit the mellow, moody sound of the record. There's a nice sense of darkness throughout – a bit more edge than you might expect – and titles include "Trouble Is A Man", "Ill Wind", "Born To Blow The Blues", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "You're Driving Me Crazy". Clara MorenoMiss Balanco ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
Lovely work from Clara Moreno – a set that's much more laidback than some of her earlier dancefloor work, and one that's filled with bossa instrumentation throughout! Joyce co-produced the set, and you can really hear some of her acoustic soul in the music – a warm blend of snapping percussion, skipping guitar lines, and occasional bits of keyboards and horns – used in ways that still really let Moreno stay in the lead, captivating our ears with her wonderful vocals! Clara's style has a breathy undercurrent, which is a nice change from some of the too-polished contemporary bossa sets – and guests on the record include Orlandivo on vocals and Joao Donato on piano – both folks we'd welcome on any album. Titles include "Mestico", "Bebete", "Balanco Zona Sul", "Bruxaria", "Brincando De Samba", "Jeito Bom De Sofrer", "Samba De Negro", and "Uala Ualala". CD

One of Ennio Morricone's most famous film scores – and certainly the one that got him recognized as a genius on a global level! The whole thing's pretty damn eerie – about as eerie as the movie, which is a real stunner – and it shifts from dark orchestral themes to sparer numbers that use guitar, banjo, and some really creepy whistling to set the mood – that landmark Morricone sense of space that really transformed film music in the 60s. Some tracks feature vocal work by I Cantorni Moderni, directed by Alessandro Alessandroni – and titles include "C'Era Una Volta Il West", "Cheyenne", "Armonica", "L'Uomo Dell'Armonica" and "L'America Di Jill". Tremendous work from the mighty Ed Motta – an artist who never lets us down, and who just keeps getting better as the years move on! Motta's songwriting, production, and overall presentation is amazing – and he's moved far past the 70s heroes that first inspired him – including his uncle Tim Maia – to a point where a set like this is fantastic from start to finish, with a richness that belies all the focus and concentration that Ed brings to his work. ✨✧ Idris MuhammadBoogie To The Top ... LP
Kudu, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Classic middle period work from drummer Idris Muhammad – a set recorded after his initial run of lean funk recordings for the jazz scene – with a bit more soul in the mix, and definitely a bit of boogie in the groove! Arrangements are by David Matthews – the maestro of the soul-styled charts who first honed his craft with James Brown – and the approach here is tight jazz funk, with both a good ear for the clubs, and some of the more sophisticated styles that the CTI/Kudu crowd could appreciate! There's some vocals at times – sung by Frank Floyd, Ray Simpson, and others – but the instrumental component of the album definitely takes the lead - with percussion by Nicky Marrero alongside Muhammad's tight drums – plus Hiram Bullock on guitar, Cliff Carter on keyboards, David Friedman on vibes, and solos from Ray Davis on alto and Jeremy Steig on flute. Titles include "One With A Star", "Boogie To The Top", "Bread", and "Stick It In Your Face". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful album from this legendary Estonian pianist – an artist who's been making quiet magic on his scene for decades, which really shows in the strengths of this wonderful trio set! Tonu's got a career that includes much more modern work in the past – and here, he blends that experience with a warmer, more lyrical approach – so that although things often swing in a conventional way, you can hear that he knows where the edges of the music are as well – especially on some of the beautiful compositions he brings to the set. The trio features Taavo Remmel on bass and Ahto Abner on drums – and tracks include "The Sorcerer", "San Francisco", "Kind Of Folk Waltz", "Purple Haze", "Aquarius", "Ruby Tuesday", and "Super C". You might know the music of keyboardist Tonu Naisso from his work in jazz, but here the approach is slightly different – still jazz-based, but with the more compact approach of vintage sound library work – as Tonu serves up a dozen great instrumentals, all with a range of excellent keyboard styles! The music's not canned, but performed by a live group – one that includes excellent saxes and flute from Markus Holkko, whose edges and inflections really open up the sound next to the electric work from the leader – given rhythms that are both cosmic and funky from Aleksi Heinola on drums and Temu Akerblom on bass. Great jazz rock jamming from National Health – a group who evolved out of Hatfield & The North, and who work here with an equally complex sound! The album's a bit late in the UK jazz rock scene, but still has all the classic touches – really well-crafted instrumentation, played with a lot of jazzy inflections – but driven towards more rockish leanings in the overall sound, especially given some of the album's jamming moments. Players include Phil Miller on some incredible guitar, Dave Stewart on keyboards, and Pip Pyle on drums – and titles include "The Collapso", "Squarer For Maud", "Dreams Wide Awake", "Binoculars", and "Phlakaton". Not Two (Poland), 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 16.99
The great reedman Mark Whitecage is a player who never fully got his due – a really unique talent in terms of phrasing and rhythm, finally given one last chance at the spotlight here on this final recording with The Nu Band, a group in which he played for many years! All four players here are great – Thomas Heberer on quarter tone trumpet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums and percussion – but it also feels as if there's a special sort of focus on the very personal, very expressive sounds that Whitecage can create – as he plays here on alto, flute, and clarinet. There's a mixture of modern structure and free improvisation here – that great legacy of the group, which is there way of bringing forward some of the new thing ideas of the 60s with more personal contemporary improv modes. Titles include "Christophe & Ornette", "Five O'Clock Blues", "The Closer You Are The Further It Gets", "Prayer For The Water Protectors", and "Minor Madness". CD
