✨✧ Andy PrattSweeter Than Wine (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrift Girl, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Moody sounds from Andy Pratt – a set that features lots of spare keyboards, drum machine rhythms, and guitar parts – all a great accompaniment for the dark-styled approach of Andy's vocals. There's a lot of echo in the production, and Pratt's almost going for an eerie sort of David Lynch style at times – on titles that include "55 No More", "Lie With Me", "I Walked By Your House Today", "Without You", "You've Left Her", and "Sweeter Than The Wine". Steve CropperWith A Little Help From My Friends ... LP
Stax/Omnivore, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
An obscure bit of late 60s Stax! Steve Cropper's working away from the MG's here, in a mode that's slightly similar, but which has his guitar upfront in the mix on a batch of Memphis-style instrumentals – kind of his own take on the groove he was laying down with Booker T, but with a lot less organ in the mix! There's no mad funk on the album, but the whole thing's pretty darn nice – and is proof that Cropper was the key element in more than just a bit of the Stax sound at the time – a really strong artist who could more than stand on his own. Titles include "Crop Dustin", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "Rattlesnake", "Funky Broadway", and "Boogaloo Down Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album

Hilton Felton/Three Of UsDream Come True ... LP
Hilton's Concept/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $29.99 36.99
A rare gem from keyboardist Hilton Felton – and one of the few albums issued on his own Hilton's Concept label! The set's got a super-sweet stripped-down feel – Hilton on organ and electric piano, backed by drums, bass, percussion, and some slight guitar – in a lineup that shifts slightly from track to track, but always keeps things lean and groovy! The album's got some killer funky numbers – like the chunky "Here Comes David", which has a nice rattling groove, and the extended mellow soul cut "Dream Come True", which blends keys and guitar with a bit of vocals, making for a nice tripped out soul style! Other tracks include "Your Analysis", "Music Shall Never Die", and "Maybe You'll Come Back To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – with obi!)

Freddie GibbsFreddie ... LP
ESGN, 2018. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
One of the toughest, leanest, tightest and most on point efforts from Freddie Gibbs to date when it came out – and still one of the best! Despite the dead on perfect homage to the Teddy Pendergrass's quiet storm soul classic Teddy with the cover art here, make no mistakes, the material is Freddie Gibbs at his most finely honed, perfectly backed on the production side by Kenny Beats for the most part. Lean beats and thick rattling bass back some of Freddie's sharpest performances from track-to-track we've ever heard. Includes "Weight", "Automatic", "Death Row" feat 03 Greedo, "2 Legit", "FLFM (Interlude)", "Triple Threat" "Set Set", "Toe Tag", "FBC", and "Diamonds 2" feat Cassi Jo Craig & Irie Jane Gibbs. K Frimpong & His Cubanos FiestaMe Da A Onnda ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A funky highlife stunner from the mighty K Frimpong – an artist who always seems to find a way to make a familiar groove sound even heavier than you might expect! That's definitely the case here – as rattling percussion really sets the scene for every track – sometimes with instrumentation that's a bit more familiar to the best highlife jams of the times, but other times with a hard and heavy early 70s funk approach that's in the best James Brown tradition! The album features four extended tracks that are all nice and long – and although there's vocals on the record, the main appeal is the fantastic instrumentation – on titles that include "Daben Ni", "Me Yee Owu Den", "Nye Mea", and "Me Da A Onnda". Green DayDookie (picture disc) ... LP
Reprise, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Bratty Bay Area pop punks Green Day hit the bigtime – paving the way for FAR too many lesser acts to hit paydirt, sure, but you can't get too mad at Billie Joe, Mike and Tre for that when this one is still such a blast decades later! Nowhere near as lowbrow as the title or cover art would make it look, it's actually one the better rock & roll albums of its era to convey the thoughts and feelings of bored, lonely, angry and in some ways pretty depressed youth...somehow doing that through catchy sing-a-long anthems. Pretty amazing thing to pull off, actually! Includes "Longview", "Welcome To Paradise", "Chump", "Basketcase", Pulling Teeth", "When I Come Around", "She", "Sassafras Roots" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited picture disc edition.)

Mighty SparrowOutcast ... LP
National/Think (Japan), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 46.99
A calypso set, but not the sort that you'd know from big crossover records of the late 50s – as the Mighty Sparrow works here with that jazzy blend of horns and rootsy rhythms that kept a strong edge in his music, and made his sounds as important on the pre-reggae scene in London as they were at home in Trinidad! There's a nicely rattling vibe to the record that really matches the sharpness of the vocals – an important current of politics, social commentary, and personal brag – all of which had a huge impact on later sounds and styles of music. The saxophone lines really keep things soulful – and titles include "The Village Ram", "Martin Luther King", "I'll Be Around", "You Don't Love Me", "Castro Eating Banana", and "Tour Of Jamaica". LP, Vinyl record album
(Excellent Japanese pressing – much better vinyl than the original!)

Ngozi FamilyDay Of Judgement (with download) ... LP
Now Again, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
Some of the heaviest work to come from the African scene of the 70s – the initial offering of the Ngozi Family – a group who clearly take strong inspiration from the Cream years of the UK scene, but who also come across with a grittier, punkier vibe overall – thanks to lean, stripped-down instrumentation and some very sharp drums! The drums rattle out underneath the magnificent fuzzy guitar lines in the lead – almost with this compressed quality that recalls Thin Lizzy at their funkier moments – but much more raw, stripped-down, and unpolished – so that the English language lyrics burst out with a really biting sound! The record's one of the first in the Zamrock tradition, and is still one of the best – a set that deserves to be in any collection of hard rock, proto-punk, and even funk rock from the 70s. Titles include "I Wanna Know", "Day Of Judgement", "We Wonna Give It To Her", "Tikondane", and "Let Me Know". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download.)

ReplacementsUnsuitable For Airplay – The Lost KFAI Concert ... LP
Rhino, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99
If you dig the Replacements as much as us, you can never get enough – especially during the first few years of the group's career, when it seemed like they were really on fire with a very fresh new sound! This set is a great lost chapter of the group from that time – and represents the first-ever professional live recording of the band in action – already a searing quartet on the stage, with an intensity that wasn't always captured this well on their studio sessions – tearing it up before a hometown stage in the Twin Cities, early in 1981! Titles include "Somethin To Du", "Love You Till Friday", "Rattlesnake", "All Day & All Of The Night", "I Hate Music", "Otto", "More Cigarettes", "Johnny's Gonna Die/All By Myself", "Oh Baby", "Excuse Me", "Customer", "I Wanna Be Loved", "Shiftless When Idle", "Off Your Pants", "Hangin Downtown", "Takin A Ride", and "Like You". ✨✧ Professor James BensonGow-Dow Experience (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Gow Dow/Jazzman (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare bit of righteous jazz from the Cali scene of the 70s – a record that's much more obscure than some of the better-known efforts from the Bay Area and the LA scene, but which resonates strongly with all the power of those classics too! James Benson was an educator as much as he was a musician – yet here, he proves himself very strongly as a hell of a leader – blowing flutes, tenor, and soprano in a cool combo that also features the greats Cal Green and Roy Gaines on guitars, Ed Pratt on alto, Buffalo Williams on piano, and Ronnie Randall on drums! There's plenty of percussion on the record, including some congas by Big Black – and the set mixes rootsy rumblings with spiritual solos in a really great way. Sandra Meadows sings a bit on the set, and titles include "Malcolm IX", "Spring 2000", "Brother Don", "Song For My Black Mother", "Nigeria West Africa", and a nice remake of "Compared To What". LP, Vinyl record album
(Individually numbered limited edition of 1500 – in a tip-on sleeve and with download!)

✨✧ Lorenzo Morresi & TenderloniousCosmica Italiana ... LP
22A (UK), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
British reedman Ed "Tenderlonious" Cawthorne is a player who always seems to give us something fresh and different with each new release – and this time around, he's teamed up with Lorenzo Morresi for a great take on the territory of Italian sound library grooves of years past! The record is plenty darn funk, and has as much sweet keyboard work as it does flute and sax work from Tenderlonious – who himself handles some of the keys, alongside Morressi, who also handles bass and guitar as well! The group's a quartet, with some additional keyboards from Emilio Merone – which will give you an idea of how many keys are at play on the album – on titles that include "Movimento Astratto", "Estate", "Doppio Sogno", "Tema Cinque", "Bazar Milano", "Cosmica Italiana", and "Classico". LP, Vinyl record album
