Randy WestonBlue Moses ... LP
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
Beautiful work from Randy Weston – and a unique electric session from the 70s! The feel is very different here than the angular modernism of Randy's roots – a warmer, more flowing sound – as you'd expect from the CTI label, and from Randy's use of electric piano as well as acoustic. The group is largeish, with key players who include Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, and Grover Washington Jr – and although there's a larger horn section on the record, they mostly hang back and let the main soloists do their thing. Don Sebesky arranged, and the tracks are still originals with an African-inspired approach to rhythms – but more warmly soulful overall, as is the CTI way! Titles include "Night In Medina", "Marrakesh Blues", and "Ifrane". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Includes the CTI inner sleeve. Cover has light surface wear, corner wear, yellowing from age inside the gatefold, and some gloss separation at the bottom left corner.)

✨✧ Randy WestonBlues ... LP
Trip, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Trip issue of material from Randy Weston's under-issued years of the mid 60s – just 3 long tracks that are all totally great! Randy's playing with a group that's similar in spirit to that used on the classic African Cookbook – Ray Copeland on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, Bill Wood on bass, Lennie McBrowne on drums, and Big Black on conga. The extended tracks start slow, but really open up – and are almost a blend of some of Weston's Africanist musings, and some of the more poetic modes expressed by Charles Mingus at the end of the 50s. Titles include "Blues For Strayhorn", "Sad Beauty Blues", and "Afro Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light ring wear.)

✨✧ Randy WestonRandy Weston – Trio & Solo ... LP
Riverside, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Classic early work from Randy Weston – featuring one side of trio material with Sam Gill on bass and Art Blakey on drums – and one side of completely solo material! LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with obi – SMJ 6208. Obi has a very small rip at the top, but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Randy WestonTanjah ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of Weston's many "comeback" albums – which he seems to make about every 10 years or so – but still a great one! Randy's playing cool electric piano, and he's backed by a tight larger ensemble arranged by Melba Liston. The record retains a lot of the best elements of his earlier ones, while giving Randy a cool 70's sound that sit surprisingly well with his style. Tracks are all by Randy, with updates of classics like "Hi Fly" and "Little Niles", plus others like "Sweet Meat" and "Tanjah". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – sealed! Cover has a small cutout mark in one corner, and the shrink is open slightly on that back corner.)

✨✧ Randy WestonBantu (Uhuru Afrika/Randy Weston Trio) ... LP
Roulette, 1957/1960. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great set that brings together 2 albums recorded by Weston during his most formative years – the classic Uhuru Afrika album, and a lighter trio side for Jubilee, from 1960. Uhuru Afrika was one of the first-ever Afro-centrist albums of jazz – was one of Randy's most progressive from the early years, and features an extended suite dedicated to African freedom, with occasional lyrics by Langston Hughes, and arrangements by the great Melba Liston. The material's political, radical, and modernist – but it never fails to groove, and uses its politics to achieve an added emotional punch, as in the best work from the same time by Max Roach and Charles Mingus. Players are all totally hip, and include Benny Bailey, Richard Williams, Candido, Olatunji, Slide Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, and Sahib Shihab. Movements of the suite are entitled "Uhuru, Kwanza", "African Lady", "Bantu", and "Kucheza Blues". The trio sides are more restrained, but still quite nice – with Randy grooving with a group that includes Peck Morrison on bass and Connie Kay on drums – on tracks that include "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "Fe Double U Blues", and "Earth Birth". ✨✧ Randy WestonLittle Niles ... LP
United Artists, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by Randy Weston! Forget his trio stuff, this is the material that made him an instant legend in the late 50s! The record's a mindblowing batch of original compositions by Randy, arranged by Melba Liston, and featuring players like Ray Copeland, Johnny Griffin, and Charlie Persip – as well as Randy and Melba themselves. Langston Hughes wrote the liner notes, and the whole thing's so super-hip you won't believe it! Titles include "Babe's Blues", "Little Niles", "Earth Birth", and "Pam's Waltz" – all done in the full-group versions that have an angular, Monk-ish quality – and which represent one of the strongest statements in modern jazz at the end of the 50s! ✨✧ Randy Weston with Billy HarperCarnival ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An unusual record for Randy Weston – a freewheeling live set recorded at Montreux in 1974, with Billy Harper joining Weston's group on tenor and flute, playing long spiritual solos that work wonderfully next to Weston's spiralling piano lines! Harper's searching quality really opens up the set, and Weston's rhythmic pulse keeps him from overly blowing, as on some of his own albums from the time – and the rough edges of the group give the session a nice degree of bite! The rest of the group features William Allen on bass, Don Moye on drums, and Steve Berrios on percussion and tracks include "Mystery Of Love", "Tribute To Duke Ellington", and "Carnival". ✨✧ Randy Weston/Lem WinchesterNew Faces At Newport ... LP
Metrojazz, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest Newport albums ever issued – a split LP that features a side apiece by two of the coolest talents of the late 50s! Side one features work by the Randy Weston trio – with Weston on piano, George Joyner on bass, and GT Hogan on drums – performing great Weston originals that include "Machine Blues", "Hi Fly", "Beef Blues Stew", and an excerpt from the great "Bantu Suite"! Even groovier is work from the quartet of vibist Lem Winchester – a combo that also includes piano from Ray Santisi, bass from John Neves, and drums from Jimmy Zitano. The set is one of the few times that Winchester recorded away from Prestige Records in his all-too-short career – and the cover even bills him as "Patrolman Lem Winchester", with a picture of him in a police hat – a reference to his day job. Winchester titles include "Now's The Time", "Take The A Train", and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Dolphy & Ron CarterMagic (Far Cry/Where) ... LP
Prestige, 1961. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
A pair of classic early 60s modern jazz sets – back to back in this great 70s package! First up is the album Far Cry from Eric Dolphy – Eric Dolphy's first meeting in the studio with trumpeter Booker Little – a brilliant batch of modernism that's easily one of the hippest records Little ever worked on! The Dolphy heard here is Eric at his most inventive – sharp-edged and angular one minute, then spiritually lyrical the next – playing flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax equally well on the record – and somehow managing to get Little to share his inspiration perfectly on every number. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a rhythm team whose abilities are a big part of the success of the record – and titles include "Far Cry", "Mrs Parker Of KC", "Left Alone", "Ode To Charlie Parker", and "Miss Ann". Next is Where – a haunting and unusual batch of tracks from bassist Ron Carter – working here with a group that includes spiritual modernists Eric Dolphy on reeds and Mal Waldron on piano – both players who really add a lot to the set! In a way, the album's more like Dolphy's own work as a leader from the time than the sort of music usually associated with Carter – and Ron really seems to let the reedman shape the overall sound of the set with his tremendous work on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. Carter plays a bit of cello in addition to his bass – giving the record a nicely eerie sound at points – and Waldron's piano, as always, is excellent during this point in his career. Titles include Randy Weston's "Where" and "Saucer Eyes", plus "Bass Duet", which features Carter dueting with George Duvivier, and a very nice version of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring and edge wear and is faded at the spine.)

Oscar SulleyMusic Of West Africa ... LP
Delta, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP ... $99.99
Strange record, but surprisingly nice. Ghanian percussionist Oscar Sulley performs here with members of the Illinois-based Air Force Band Of Mid America – and the 2 record set features one disc of hard spare percussion tracks, and one of jazzy highlife tracks. The highlife stuff is strange, but quite nice – with Sulley's percussion ensemble receiving backing by the Air Force band's big brassy finish. The result is some nice tracks with a heavy drum sound, and a spacey airy horn groove, similar to some of the Randy Weston or Art Blakey projects of this sort. Titles include "Bontuku", which has a nice break to it, "Galaxy", "Wahala Goes To Galos", and "Togo-kyo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has minimal wear.)

✨✧ Betty CarterBetty Carter ... LP
Bet Car, Late 70s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic LP by Betty Carter – and one of the first she issued on her own Bet-Car label, which she formed after years of being screwed by the music industry! The groove is extremely soulful – and backing is by Norman Simmons on piano, Lisle Atkinson on bass, and Al Harewood on drums. Titles include Betty's own "Please Do Something", her great version of Randy Weston's "Ego", and her always-great rendition of "By The Bend In The River". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eric DolphyBerlin Concerts ... LP
Inner City, 1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work by Dolphy – as essential to his catalog as any of his albums on Prestige from the same time! Although Dolphy broke plenty of musical barriers in the studio, to our ears, it was always in a live setting that he sounded best – freely exploring the kind of space his playing opened up, hitting notes that were more soulful and spiritual than many that he ever recorded on his studio sides. This set is a perfect example of that trend – as Dolphy's working here with a strong straight jazz combo, one that includes the great Benny Bailey on trumpet, in a set that features familiar tunes, turned into haunting explorations of Dolphy's new jazz idiom. One of the highlights is an incredible 15 minute version of Randy Weston's "Hi Fly", with Dolphy doing great work on flute – and other tunes include "Hot House", "Geewee", "When Lights Are Low", "I'll Remember April", and "The Meeting". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Booker ErvinBack From The Gig ... LP
Blue Note, 1963/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A magnificent set of two great Booker Ervin sessions recorded in the 60s, and not released until the mid 70s in this great Blue Note two-fer. Record one has also since come out under Horace Parlan's name as "Happy Frame of Mind", and is a great post-Mingus sextet with a tight group that includes Johnny Coles and Grant Green, and featuring some nice Randy Weston material. Record two's a bit more searching, and has Booker with Woody Shaw and Kenny Barron, and was recorded in 1968 – one of the last sessions before his tragic early death! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner and split top seam.)

✨✧ Three SoundsBlack Orchid ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! By the time of this release (the group's 7th for Blue Note), Gene Harris and the trio had really come into their own – and were moving past simple soul jazz modes into this wonderful blend of grooviness and lyricism – still very much beholden to Harris' rhythmic approach to the keys, but also filled with loads of complicated lines, especially from the group's wonderful bassist Andrew Simpkins – whose round tone is especially great on the mellow numbers. Titles include Randy Weston's "Saucer Eyes" , Neal Hefti's "Black Orchid", and the tracks "Don't Go Don't Go" and "Oh Well Oh Well", both originals by Gene Harris. LP, Vinyl record album
(New York stereo pressing, with Van Gelder stam and ear – a great copy!)

✨✧ Johnny ColesWarm Sound ... LP
Epic, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who's probably best known to the world for his work with Charles Mingus, or for his other 60s session on Blue Note! This album's quite different than both of those aspects of Johnny's career – and has him blowing some sweetly soulful ballads in a quartet setting with Kenny Drew on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. The feel is quite like some of Art Farmer's best of this nature from the time – laidback, but never too sleepy or sloppy – and Johnny definitely brings an edge to the record on the best numbers. Titles include some great Randy Weston compositions – "Hi Fly", "Pretty Strange", and "Where" – plus Johnny Coles' own "Room 3". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousThat's The Way I Feel Right Now – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... LP
A&M, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album
