✨✧ RaekwonOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx (2LP purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Loud/RCA/Get On Down, 1995. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Chef Raekwon cooks up one of finest hip hop albums in history – a standout moment in the Wu Tang canon and the 90s in general! Given Ghostface's presence throughout, the prime RZA production and other top shelf guests, you could almost call this one a Wu Tang Clan album, if not for Raekwon's incredible leadership behind the mic. Guests include Nas, Method Man, Inspektah Deck and more from the Wu Tang family. An absolute standard-bearer! Titles include "Spot Rusherz", "Can It Be All So Simple", "Knuckleheadz", "Criminology", "Ice Water", "Wisdom Body", and "Wu-Gambinos". This great 2LP remastered 2012 vinyl reissue also includes the bonus "North Star (Jewels)". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian ColemanCheck The Technique Vol 2 – More Liner Notes For Hip Hop Junkies (paperback) ... Book
Wax Facts Press, 2014. New Copy ... $25.99 27.98
Golden age of hip hop historian Brian Coleman's second Check The Technique tome – the in-depth stories behind some of the greatest records of the 80s and early 90s – an even greater collection than the first volume! Coleman's approach is straight-forward and direct – chronicling a choice selection of 25 bonafide classic albums, breaking them down track-by-track, peppered by interviews with the artists, producers and other principle personalities behind the work, for the most honest histories that Coleman can get. Volume 2 uses a broader time frame than the previous collection, going as far back as 1981's Wild Style Breakbeats, and as recent as the late 90s for Mos Def & Talib Kweli's Black Star and The Coup's Steal This Album. Other records discussioned include The Cactus Album by 3rd Bass, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing by Black Sheep, The Sun Rises In The East by Jeru The Damaja, Mantronix The Album, Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Links, Stetsasonic In Full Gear, Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop by Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics and more. Like the author's Check The Technique Vol 1 and Rakim Told Me, it's vital hip hop history, breezily readable and engrossing as can be. 525 paperback pages, and each chapter includes photos of the artists, the records and associated singles, and other choice historical tidbits. Essential! Book

Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Smart , streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by restlessly inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". CD

J DillaJay Stay Paid ... LP
Nature Sounds, 2009. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99
An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 27 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla! RZA & OthersMan With The Iron Fists ... CD
Soul Temple, 2012. Used ... $6.99
The best music in years from RZA – the man who introduced styliized martial arts soundtrack funk to hardcore hip hop – and the soundtrack to his own damn stylized martial arts film, The Man With The Iron Fists! Musically, it's top notch. RZA's wise enough to update his tried-and-true style rather than revisit it – with swelling soul strings and a crisper sound than the dusty Shaw Bros-sampling Wu Tang sound of past endeavors –and he's joined by a diverse roster of guests that includes Ghostface, Raekwon and other Wu veterans, Kanye, MOP, Pharoahe Monch, The Black Keys, Corrine Bailey Rae, Danny Brown and many more! Includes "The Baddest Man Alive" with The Black Keys, "Black Out" with Ghostface, MOP & Pharoahe Monch, "White Dress" with Kanye West, "Rivers Of Blood" with Wu Tang Clan and Kool G Rap, "Chains" with Corrine Bailey Rae, "The Archer" with Killa Sin, "Just Blowin' In The Wind" with RZA and Flatbush Zombies, "Your Good Thing Is About To End" by Mable John, "Built For This" with Method Man, Freddie Gibbs & Streetlife" and more. Unlike a lot of late 90s major label hip hop, Loud seems to have found the perfect mix of commericial success and straight dope hip hop... From the movie dialogue intro to "Twins". ✨✧ Ghostface KillahFishscale ... LP
Def Jam, 2006. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ghostface brings some real hip hop to latter day Def Jam – his best album since Supreme Clientele – and possibly '06 hip hop album of the year! Fishscale features appearances by the Wu Tang Clan & Theodore Unit, Ne-Yo, Megan Ward and others on the mic – but it's the stable of producers that helps make this one of the best above ground hip hop albums we've heard in a long time. MF Doom puts his Metal Fingerz behind the boards for a bunch of tracks, and the legendary Pete Rock handles a few – with additional work by J Dilla, Just Blaze, Lewis Parker and others. Ghost brings a literal lyrical focus to a number of the tracks – but he's still spraying words all over the damn place – and the best tracks are just as thrilling as his surreal word bombs of yore. Tracks include "Shakey Dog", "Kilo" feat Raekwon, the excellent Just Blaze-produced anthem "The Champ", "9 Milli Bros" feat Wu Tang Clan, "Beauty Jackson", "RAGU" feat Raekwon, "Be Easy" feat Trife, "Dogs of War" feat Raekwon & Theodore Unit, "Barbershop" and more. A killer set of classic Wu Tang Clan material – far more than just a typical best of compilation, in that it includes not only the benchmark Wu Tang Clan proper cuts – but some of the best solo singles, too! Some of the tightest Wu Tang and first wave solo joints including "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing To F Wit", "Method Man", "Da Mystery Of Chess Boxin'", "Reunited", "It'z Yourz", "Gravel Pit" and more by the namesake crew, "Incarcerated Scarfaces" by Raekwon, "Daytona 500" by Ghostface, Raekwon & Cappadonna, "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" by ODB, "Winter Warz" by Ghostface and more! ✨✧ Masta KillaNo Said Date (CD with bonus DVD) ... CD
Nature Sounds, 2004. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The long, long overdue solo debut from the Wu's Masta Killa FINALLY came out in the spring of '04, 11 years after the MC first made his name on Enter The Wu Tang. Killa makes it a proud point to fully represent the Wu on the LP, which features some production by the RZA and appearances by the entire Wu Tang A-team (RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, U-God and Inspectah Deck). The vocals were recorded over the previous half decade or so, when the ever more soap opera like relationships among Wu MC's weren't so strained. Other production booth knob twirlers for the set include Mathamatics, True Master and Dave West. It ain't a masterpiece, but at least it's a true Wu LP, and most of the tracks are a lot better than the sadly compromised numbers on Method Man's '04 Def Jam LP. "Grab The Microphone", "No Said Date", "Last Drink", "Love Spell", "Whatever", "Secret Rival", "Digi Warfare", "School", "Silverbacks" and more. CD comes with a bonus DVD. CD

✨✧ Slick RickArt Of Storytelling ... CD
Def Jam, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
To our ears, the best Slick Rick LP since his classic first LP from way back when. Nice laid back mid-tempo production throughout. "The Art of Storytelling" is right, with lots of the short stories he's known for. And the numerous guest appearances really work (including Raekwon, Nas, Canibus, Outcast) with the guest MC's adapting their style to Slick Rick's, rather than just doing they're usual material – even Snoop sounds dope on "Unify." As a bonus, there's three live tracks with Doug E. Fresh, including "The Show" and "La Di Da Di." Stand out tracks include "I Own America parts I and II", "Kill Niggaz", "Frozen" with Raekwon, "I Own America", "Why Why Why". CD
