Chef Raekwon cooks up one of finest hip hop albums in history – a standout moment in the Wu Tang canon and the 90s in general! Titles include "Spot Rusherz", "Can It Be All So Simple", "Knuckleheadz", "Criminology", "Ice Water", "Wisdom Body", and "Wu-Gambinos". Two tracks from "Only Built For Cuban Linx", still one of the best Wu-associated LPs. Production from RZA at the height of his skills. "Ice Cream", the song that inspired all those 'ice cream flavor' t-shirts, features Ghost Face, Method Man, and Cappadonna (then known as Cappacino) and is one of the funnier hip hop 'love songs' in a while. Now to track down the newly discovered Earl Klugh sample. . . 12-inch, Vinyl record

Wu-Tang/Loud, 1999. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second solo album by The Chef – a record that had hard time finding space outside the massive shadow of his first solo landmark Only Built 4 Cuban Linx – and like other Wu Tang solo albums of the era, there's a number of gems on here that really never had a chance to get over a bar set set so high. Titles include "Yae Yo", "Casablanca", the Pete Rock produced near classic "Sneakers", "Raw", "Pop S**t", My Favorite Dred", "Live From New York", "100 Rounds", "Power", and "Forecast". Brian ColemanCheck The Technique Vol 2 – More Liner Notes For Hip Hop Junkies (paperback) ... Book
Wax Facts Press, 2014. New Copy ... $25.99 27.98
Golden age of hip hop historian Brian Coleman's second Check The Technique tome – the in-depth stories behind some of the greatest records of the 80s and early 90s – an even greater collection than the first volume! Coleman's approach is straight-forward and direct – chronicling a choice selection of 25 bonafide classic albums, breaking them down track-by-track, peppered by interviews with the artists, producers and other principle personalities behind the work, for the most honest histories that Coleman can get. Volume 2 uses a broader time frame than the previous collection, going as far back as 1981's Wild Style Breakbeats, and as recent as the late 90s for Mos Def & Talib Kweli's Black Star and The Coup's Steal This Album. Other records discussioned include The Cactus Album by 3rd Bass, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing by Black Sheep, The Sun Rises In The East by Jeru The Damaja, Mantronix The Album, Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Links, Stetsasonic In Full Gear, Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop by Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics and more. Like the author's Check The Technique Vol 1 and Rakim Told Me, it's vital hip hop history, breezily readable and engrossing as can be. 525 paperback pages, and each chapter includes photos of the artists, the records and associated singles, and other choice historical tidbits. Essential! Book

Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... Cassette
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... $9.99
Smart , streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by restlessly inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". Cassette

✨✧ Ghostface KillahSupreme Clientele ... LP
Epic, 2000. Good+ 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
Ghostface's second full length – maybe the most worthwhile Wu solo project, and the best of all them since the first wave of the Wu. Ghost's flow is raw as hell, furious and re-energized, and so startlingly poetic that we were completely blown away on the first listen. The guests seem to feed off this huge energy boom, too, with Method Man and Cappadona getting their best verses in a while, and even RZA's misguided Bobby Digital persona kicks some raw dynamite. Also features appearances by Raekwon and Redman, plus a few tracks with beats by the RZA. Tracks include "Nutmeg", "Saturday Nite", "Apollo Kids", "The Grain", "Child's Play", "Malcolm", "Buck 50", and "Cherchez La Ghost". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ J DillaJay Stay Paid ... LP
Nature Sounds, 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 27 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla! While the other standouts of the class of '95 like Nas, Jay Z and AZ drifted towards the Escobar/Gambino/Cristal style, Mobb Deep avoided that trendy hopping trap in this tight follow-up to their legendary Imfamous debut! Their subject matter may not have evolved or expanded too much beyond what made 'em (in)famous, their strong production is top notch and strong to this day.. Also, some nice guest appearances from Method Man, Raekwon, Nas, Big Noyd. Includes the hilarious "Drop A Gem On 'Em", "Hell On Earth", "Extortion", "More Trife Life", "Still Shinin'", "G.O.D. Pt III", "Nighttime Vultures", "Bloodsport" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Modern mic legend Talib Kweli delivers once again – with busy, brilliant rhymes and diverse production backdrop – and appearances by guitarist Gary Clark Jr, Big KRIT, Raekwon, Abby Dobson, The Underachievers and more. Kweli has been killing mics since the 90s, and much to our appreciation he's still sounds like a hungry young gun after all these years – and proudly carrying the torch for mic centric hip hop. Includes "Inner Monologue", the standout "Demonology" with Big KRIT & Gary Clark Jr, "State Of Grace" feat Abby Dobson, "Violations" feat Raekwon, "New Leaders" feat The Underachievers, "The Wormhole", "What's Real" feat RES, "Art Imitates Life" feat Black Thought, Rah Digga and Albe Back, "Lover's Peak" and "Colors Of You" feat Mike Posner.
