Brian ColemanCheck The Technique Vol 2 – More Liner Notes For Hip Hop Junkies (paperback) ... Book
Wax Facts Press, 2014. New Copy ... $19.99 27.98
Golden age of hip hop historian Brian Coleman's second Check The Technique tome – the in-depth stories behind some of the greatest records of the 80s and early 90s – an even greater collection than the first volume! Coleman's approach is straight-forward and direct – chronicling a choice selection of 25 bonafide classic albums, breaking them down track-by-track, peppered by interviews with the artists, producers and other principle personalities behind the work, for the most honest histories that Coleman can get. Volume 2 uses a broader time frame than the previous collection, going as far back as 1981's Wild Style Breakbeats, and as recent as the late 90s for Mos Def & Talib Kweli's Black Star and The Coup's Steal This Album. Other records discussioned include The Cactus Album by 3rd Bass, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing by Black Sheep, The Sun Rises In The East by Jeru The Damaja, Mantronix The Album, Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Links, Stetsasonic In Full Gear, Stunts, Blunts & Hip Hop by Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics and more. Like the author's Check The Technique Vol 1 and Rakim Told Me, it's vital hip hop history, breezily readable and engrossing as can be. 525 paperback pages, and each chapter includes photos of the artists, the records and associated singles, and other choice historical tidbits. Essential! Book

✨✧ Ghostface KillahBulletproof Wallets ... LP
Epic, 2001. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ghostface's follow up to Supreme Clientele – a tough predecessor to live up, no doubt about that – but Bulletproof Wallets is still a cut or 10 above some of the Wu work of the later 90s and early 00s! The single "Ghost Showers" is a great track, and "Never Be The Same Again" with Raekwon and Carl Thomas is another killer cut – others titles include "Flowers" with Method Man & Superb, "Jealousy", "The Juks" feat Trife & Superb, "Walking Through Darkness" feat Takitha, "The Hilton", "Ice" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeves.)

✨✧ Ghostface Killah & Adrian YoungeTwelve Reasons To Die 2 ... LP
Linear Labs, 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A superior sequel to Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge's Twelve Reasons To Die saga – cementing the mid teens Ghostface creative resurgence in a major way – with some of the finest production work by Younge to date! It's a stunning reminder of how sharp Ghostface can be this late in the game when he's really feeling it, and he's a gracious host here, too – collaborating with Raekwon on the mic throughout the record, even featuring some moody narration by RZA – and seriously impressive guest appearances by Scarab, Lyrics Born, Chino XL and Bilal. There's a real mythology to the project, with a loose, but genuinely compelling narrative arc – combining prime Wu school crime noir rhymes and soundtrack funk production inspired by giallo, Blacksploitation and Younge's own distinct genius. Includes "Powerful One", "Daily News", "Return Of The Savage" with Raekwon & RZA, ,"Death's Invitation" with Scarab, Lyrics Born and Chino XL, "King Of New York", "Let The Record Spin" and "Blackout" with Raekwon, "Resurrection Morning" with Raekwon and Bilal and "Life's A Rebirth" with RZA. ✨✧ Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Smart , streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by restlessly inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". CD

✨✧ Ghostface KillahSupreme Clientele (clean version) ... LP
Epic, 2000. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Ghostface's second full length – maybe the most worthwhile Wu solo project, and the best of all them since the first wave of the Wu. Ghost's flow is raw as hell, furious and re-energized, and so startlingly poetic that we were completely blown away on the first listen. The guests seem to feed off this huge energy boom, too, with Method Man and Cappadona getting their best verses in a while, and even RZA's misguided Bobby Digital persona kicks some raw dynamite. Also features appearances by Raekwon and Redman, plus a few tracks with beats by the RZA. Tracks include "Nutmeg", "Saturday Nite", "Apollo Kids", "The Grain", "Child's Play", "Malcolm", "Buck 50", and "Cherchez La Ghost". LP, Vinyl record album

Def Jam, 2010. Used 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The drama master of hip hop and pretty much all of contemporary pop music returns with his Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – a full length hip hop rumination on being hated and the struggle of needing that hate to be creatively fruitful. It's not always an easy listening experience, but it's a hella strong record, and yet another "Album Of The Year" candidate for Mr. West, love him or hate him. Includes "Georgeous" feat Kid Cudi & Raekwon, "Power", "All Of The Lights", "So Apalled" with Jay Z, Pusha T, Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beatz & The RZA, "Runaway" feat Pusha T, "Hell Of A Life", "Blame Game" with John Legend, "Who Will Survive In America" and "Dark Fantasy". ✨✧ Slick RickArt Of Storytelling ... LP
Def Jam, 1999. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The Art of Storytelling is right, with lots of the short stories MC Ricky Dee's known for. To our ears, the best Slick Rick LP since his classic first LP from way back when. Nice laid back mid-tempo production throughout with numerous guest appearances including Raekwon, Nas, and Outcast that work nicely, with the MC's adapting their style to Slick Rick's, rather than just doing their usual material – even Snoop sounds dope on "Unify." As a bonus, there's three live tracks with Doug E. Fresh, including "The Show" and "La Di Da Di." Stand out tracks include "I Own America Parts I and II", "Kill Niggaz", "Frozen" with Raekwon, "I Own America", "Why Why Why". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLegacy Of NuSoul (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sony (Germany), Late 90s/2000s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Call it what you want – Nu Soul, Neo Soul, or just plain ol' contemporary soul – the sound of R&B has changed a lot in the past decade or two, as you'll hear in this wonderful batch of tracks! The collection is heavy on work from the Sony and RCA catalogs – and includes a fair bit of the best acts to break big from the underground, then find a huge audience in the mainstream – and there's some especially great tracks from the 90s, back when this movement first got going, but before anyone thought to give it a label. 3CD set features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Heavenly Daughter (soul inside mix)" by Kwesi, "Is It Possible" by Raheem DeVaughn, "Stick Up Kid" by Lyfe Jennings, "I Won't" by Alica Keys, "Hopeless" by Dionne Farris, "Just What It Takes (human rhythm rmx)" by Kenny Lattimore, "She Don't Have To Know" by John Legend, "Still Believe In Love" by Jacksoul, "I Am Your Woman (summertime rmx radio)" by Syleena Johnson, "Get Up" by Amel Larrieux, "So Good" by Davina feat Raekwon, "If I Had You" by Frankie, "You Will Rise" by Sweetback, "Oh Girl" by Raphael Saadiq, "Finer Things" by Jon B feat Nas, "Charlene" by Anthony Hamilton, "Matrimony Maybe You" by Maxwell, "Inside My Love" by Trina Broussard, "Don't You Forget It" by Glenn Lewis, "Nature Of A Man" by Heather Headley, "I Can't Help It" by Davina, "Need You" by 7 Sons Of Soul, and "Guess Who Loves You More" by Raheem DeVaughn. ✨✧ VariousLegacy Of R' N' B Party (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sony (Germany), 1990s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from the 90s – music that's mainstream, but which also draws some nice touches from the underground too – especially the wave of hip hop production that was helping to bring some sharper edges to the grooves in more familiar soul and R&B! The set's a lot hipper than you might think from the Kandi-styled cover, or the "party" on the front – as the tunes are the sort that are really well-remembered from back in the day, and mostly not the stuff of crossover hits. 3CD set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Butta Love (you got the love rmx)" by Next with Naughty By Nature, "Come On Out" by Dede Lopez, "Unpretty (don't look any further rmx w/rap)" by TLC, "Head Over Heels" by Allure with Nas, "Keep It Real" by Jon B & Coko with Jay-Z, "Still In Love" by Nivea, "U Don't Have To Call" by Usher, "Weekend (radio mix)" by Kenny Lattimore, "I See You" by Best Man, "All Eyez On Me (urban mix)" by Monica, "Too Close (Phatboy club mix)" by Next, "Thank God It's Friday" by R Kelly, "1 Thing" by Amerie, "Joyride" by Men Of Vizion with Tasha Scott, "Put Me Down" by Donell Jones, "Let's Get Married (ReMarquable rmx)" by Jagged Edge with Run, "Daydreamin Part 2 (ext version)" by Tatyana Ali with Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, "Tell Me (6 Karat hip hop mix)" by Groove Theory with Brand Nubian, "After Party" by Koffee Brown, and "No More (Cuban Linx 2000 rmx)" by Ruff Endz feat Ghostface Killah & Raekwon.
